1Συνκαλεσάμενος (Having called together) δὲ (then) τοὺς (the) δώδεκα (Twelve), ἔδωκεν (He gave) αὐτοῖς (to them) δύναμιν (power) καὶ (and) ἐξουσίαν (authority) ἐπὶ (over) πάντα (all) τὰ (the) δαιμόνια (demons), καὶ (and) νόσους (diseases) θεραπεύειν (to heal), 2καὶ (and) ἀπέστειλεν (He sent) αὐτοὺς (them) κηρύσσειν (to proclaim) τὴν (the) βασιλείαν (kingdom) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) καὶ (and) ἰᾶσθαι (to heal) ‹τοὺς (the) ἀσθενεῖς› (sick), 3καὶ (and) εἶπεν (He said) πρὸς (to) αὐτούς (them), “Μηδὲν (Nothing) αἴρετε (take) εἰς (for) τὴν (the) ὁδόν (journey); μήτε (neither) ῥάβδον (staff), μήτε (nor) πήραν (bag), μήτε (nor) ἄρτον (bread), μήτε (nor) ἀργύριον (money), μήτε (nor) ἀνὰ (apiece) δύο (two) χιτῶνας (tunics) ἔχειν (to have). 4καὶ (And) εἰς (into) ἣν (whatever) ἂν (-) οἰκίαν (house) εἰσέλθητε (you might enter), ἐκεῖ (there) μένετε (remain), καὶ (and) ἐκεῖθεν (from there) ἐξέρχεσθε (go forth). 5καὶ (And) ὅσοι (as many as) ἂν (-) μὴ (not) δέχωνται (might receive) ὑμᾶς (you), ἐξερχόμενοι (going forth) ἀπὸ (from) τῆς (the) πόλεως (city) ἐκείνης (that), τὸν (the) κονιορτὸν (dust) ἀπὸ (from) τῶν (the) ποδῶν (feet) ὑμῶν (of you) ἀποτινάσσετε (shake off), εἰς (as) μαρτύριον (a testimony) ἐπ’ (against) αὐτούς (them).”

6Ἐξερχόμενοι (Going forth) δὲ (then), διήρχοντο (they were passing) κατὰ (through) τὰς (the) κώμας (villages), εὐαγγελιζόμενοι (proclaiming the gospel) καὶ (and) θεραπεύοντες (healing) πανταχοῦ (everywhere).

7Ἤκουσεν (Heard of) δὲ (now) Ἡρῴδης (Herod) ὁ (the) τετραάρχης (Tetrarch) τὰ (the things) γινόμενα (being done) πάντα (all), καὶ (and) διηπόρει (was perplexed), διὰ (because) τὸ (-) λέγεσθαι (it was said) ὑπό (by) τινων (some) ὅτι (-) Ἰωάννης (John) ἠγέρθη (has been raised) ἐκ (out from) νεκρῶν (the dead), 8ὑπό (by) τινων (some) δὲ (also) ὅτι (that) Ἠλίας (Elijah) ἐφάνη (had appeared), ἄλλων (by others) δὲ (also) ὅτι (that) προφήτης (a prophet) τις (one) τῶν (of the) ἀρχαίων (ancients) ἀνέστη (had arisen).

9Εἶπεν (Said) δὲ (then) ‹ὁ› (-) Ἡρῴδης (Herod), “Ἰωάννην (John) ἐγὼ (I) ἀπεκεφάλισα (beheaded); τίς (who) δέ (however) ἐστιν (is) οὗτος (this) περὶ (concerning) οὗ (whom) ἀκούω (I hear) τοιαῦτα (such things)?” καὶ (And) ἐζήτει (he was seeking) ἰδεῖν (to see) αὐτόν (Him).

The Feeding of the Five Thousand

10Καὶ (And) ὑποστρέψαντες (having returned), οἱ (the) ἀπόστολοι (apostles) διηγήσαντο (related) αὐτῷ (to Him) ὅσα (whatever) ἐποίησαν (they had done). Καὶ (And) παραλαβὼν (having taken) αὐτοὺς (them), ὑπεχώρησεν (He withdrew) κατ’ (by) ἰδίαν (Himself) εἰς (into) πόλιν (a town) καλουμένην (called) Βηθσαϊδά (Bethsaida). 11οἱ (The) δὲ (now) ὄχλοι (crowds) γνόντες (having known it), ἠκολούθησαν (followed) αὐτῷ (Him); καὶ (and) ἀποδεξάμενος (having received) αὐτοὺς (them), ἐλάλει (He was speaking) αὐτοῖς (to them) περὶ (concerning) τῆς (the) βασιλείας (kingdom) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), καὶ (and) τοὺς (those) χρείαν (need) ἔχοντας (having) θεραπείας (of healing), ἰᾶτο (He was healing).

12Ἡ (-) δὲ (And) ἡμέρα (the day) ἤρξατο (began) κλίνειν (to decline); προσελθόντες (having come) δὲ (then) οἱ (the) δώδεκα (Twelve) εἶπαν (said) αὐτῷ (to Him), “Ἀπόλυσον (Dismiss) τὸν (the) ὄχλον (crowd), ἵνα (that) πορευθέντες (having gone) εἰς (into) τὰς (the) κύκλῳ (surrounding) κώμας (villages) καὶ (and) ἀγροὺς (countryside) καταλύσωσιν (they might lodge), καὶ (and) εὕρωσιν (might find) ἐπισιτισμόν (provisions); ὅτι (for) ὧδε (here) ἐν (in) ἐρήμῳ (a desolate) τόπῳ (place) ἐσμέν (we are).”

13Εἶπεν (He said) δὲ (now) πρὸς (to) αὐτούς (them), “Δότε (Give) αὐτοῖς (to them) φαγεῖν (to eat) ⇔ ὑμεῖς (you).”

Οἱ (-) δὲ (But) εἶπαν (they said), “Οὐκ (Not) εἰσὶν (there are) ἡμῖν (to us) πλεῖον (more) ἢ (than) ἄρτοι (loaves) πέντε (five), καὶ (and) ἰχθύες (fish) δύο (two), εἰ (if) μήτι (not) πορευθέντες (having gone), ἡμεῖς (we) ἀγοράσωμεν (should buy) εἰς (for) πάντα (all) τὸν (the) λαὸν (people) τοῦτον (this) βρώματα (food).” 14ἦσαν (They were) γὰρ (for) ὡσεὶ (about) ἄνδρες (men) πεντακισχίλιοι (five thousand).

Εἶπεν (He said) δὲ (then) πρὸς (to) τοὺς (the) μαθητὰς (disciples) αὐτοῦ (of Him), “Κατακλίνατε (Make sit down) αὐτοὺς (them), κλισίας (groups) ὡσεὶ (of about) ἀνὰ (in) πεντήκοντα (fifty).” 15καὶ (And) ἐποίησαν (they did) οὕτως (so) καὶ (and) κατέκλιναν (made sit down) ἅπαντας (all).

16Λαβὼν (Having taken) δὲ (then) τοὺς (the) πέντε (five) ἄρτους (loaves) καὶ (and) τοὺς (the) δύο (two) ἰχθύας (fish), ἀναβλέψας (having looked up) εἰς (to) τὸν (the) οὐρανὸν (heaven), εὐλόγησεν (He blessed) αὐτοὺς (them) καὶ (and) κατέκλασεν (broke them), καὶ (and) ἐδίδου (He kept giving them) τοῖς (to the) μαθηταῖς (disciples) παραθεῖναι (to set before) τῷ (the) ὄχλῳ (crowd).

17Καὶ (And) ἔφαγον (they ate) καὶ (and) ἐχορτάσθησαν (were satisfied) πάντες (all); καὶ (and) ἤρθη (was taken up) τὸ (that) περισσεῦσαν (having been a surplus) αὐτοῖς (to them) κλασμάτων (of fragments), κόφινοι (hand-baskets) δώδεκα (twelve).

Peter's Confession of Christ

18Καὶ (And) ἐγένετο (it came to pass) ἐν (as) τῷ (-) εἶναι (was) αὐτὸν (He) προσευχόμενον (praying) κατὰ (in) μόνας (solitary), συνῆσαν (were with) αὐτῷ (Him) οἱ (the) μαθηταί (disciples), καὶ (and) ἐπηρώτησεν (He questioned) αὐτοὺς (them), λέγων (saying), “Τίνα (Whom) με (Me) «οἱ (the) ὄχλοι» (crowds) ⇔ λέγουσιν (do pronounce) εἶναι (to be)?”

19Οἱ (-) δὲ (And) ἀποκριθέντες (answering), εἶπαν (they said), “Ἰωάννην (John) τὸν (the) Βαπτιστήν (Baptist); ἄλλοι (others) δὲ (also), Ἠλίαν (Elijah); ἄλλοι (others) δὲ (now), ὅτι (that) προφήτης (a prophet), τις (one) τῶν (of the) ἀρχαίων (ancients), ἀνέστη (has arisen).”

20Εἶπεν (He said) δὲ (then) αὐτοῖς (to them), “Ὑμεῖς (You) δὲ (however), τίνα (whom) με (Me) λέγετε (do pronounce) εἶναι (to be)?”

Πέτρος (Peter) δὲ (then) ἀποκριθεὶς (answering) εἶπεν (said), “Τὸν (The) Χριστὸν (Christ) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God).”

Christ's Passion Foretold

21Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) ἐπιτιμήσας (having strictly warned) αὐτοῖς (them), παρήγγειλεν (He instructed them) μηδενὶ (to no one) λέγειν (to tell) τοῦτο (this), 22εἰπὼν (having said) ὅτι (-), “Δεῖ (It is necessary for) τὸν (the) Υἱὸν (Son) τοῦ (-) ἀνθρώπου (of Man) πολλὰ (many things) παθεῖν (to suffer), καὶ (and) ἀποδοκιμασθῆναι (to be rejected) ἀπὸ (by) τῶν (the) πρεσβυτέρων (elders) καὶ (and) ἀρχιερέων (chief priests) καὶ (and) γραμματέων (scribes), καὶ (and) ἀποκτανθῆναι (to be killed), καὶ (and) τῇ (on the) τρίτῃ (third) ἡμέρᾳ (day) ἐγερθῆναι (to be raised).”

34Ταῦτα (These things) δὲ (then) αὐτοῦ (as he) λέγοντος (is saying), ἐγένετο (came) νεφέλη (a cloud) καὶ (and) ἐπεσκίαζεν (was overshadowing) αὐτούς (them); ἐφοβήθησαν (they feared) δὲ (then) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) εἰσελθεῖν (entering) αὐτοὺς (of them) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) νεφέλην (cloud). 35καὶ (And) φωνὴ (a voice) ἐγένετο (came) ἐκ (out of) τῆς (the) νεφέλης (cloud), λέγουσα (saying), “Οὗτός (This) ἐστιν (is) ὁ (the) Υἱός (Son) μου (of Me),a ὁ (-) ἐκλελεγμένος (whom I have chosen); αὐτοῦ (Him) ἀκούετε (listen to)!” 36καὶ (And) ἐν (as) τῷ (-) γενέσθαι (occurred) τὴν (the) φωνὴν (voice), εὑρέθη (was found) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) μόνος (alone). καὶ (And) αὐτοὶ (they) ἐσίγησαν (were silent), καὶ (and) οὐδενὶ (to no one) ἀπήγγειλαν (they told) ἐν (in) ἐκείναις (those) ταῖς (the) ἡμέραις (days) οὐδὲν (anything) ὧν (of what) ἑώρακαν (they had seen).

The Boy with an Evil Spirit

37Ἐγένετο (It came to pass) δὲ (then) τῇ (the) ἑξῆς (next) ἡμέρᾳ (day), κατελθόντων (on having come down) αὐτῶν (of them) ἀπὸ (from) τοῦ (the) ὄρους (mountain), συνήντησεν (met) αὐτῷ (Him) ὄχλος (a crowd) πολύς (great). 38καὶ (And) ἰδοὺ (behold), ἀνὴρ (a man) ἀπὸ (from) τοῦ (the) ὄχλου (crowd) ἐβόησεν (cried out), λέγων (saying), “Διδάσκαλε (Teacher), δέομαί (I implore) σου (You) ἐπιβλέψαι (to look) ἐπὶ (upon) τὸν (the) υἱόν (son) μου (of me), ὅτι (for) μονογενής (an only child) μοί (to me) ἐστιν (he is). 39καὶ (And) ἰδοὺ (behold), πνεῦμα (a spirit) λαμβάνει (takes) αὐτόν (him), καὶ (and) ἐξαίφνης (suddenly) κράζει (he cries out), καὶ (and) σπαράσσει (it throws into convulsions) αὐτὸν (him) μετὰ (with) ἀφροῦ (foaming), καὶ (and) μόγις* (with difficulty) ἀποχωρεῖ (it departs) ἀπ’ (from) αὐτοῦ (him), συντρῖβον (bruising) αὐτόν (him). 40καὶ (And) ἐδεήθην (I begged) τῶν (the) μαθητῶν (disciples) σου (of You) ἵνα (that) ἐκβάλωσιν (they might cast out) αὐτό (it), καὶ (and) οὐκ (not) ἠδυνήθησαν (they were able).”

41Ἀποκριθεὶς (Answering) δὲ (now), ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) εἶπεν (said), “Ὦ (O) γενεὰ (generation) ἄπιστος (unbelieving) καὶ (and) διεστραμμένη (perverted), ἕως (until) πότε (when) ἔσομαι (will I be) πρὸς (with) ὑμᾶς (you) καὶ (and) ἀνέξομαι (bear with) ὑμῶν (you)? προσάγαγε (Bring) ὧδε (here) τὸν (the) υἱόν (son) σου (of you).”

42Ἔτι (While) δὲ (then) προσερχομένου (he was coming near) αὐτοῦ (of him), ἔρρηξεν (threw down) αὐτὸν (him) τὸ (the) δαιμόνιον (demon) καὶ (and) συνεσπάραξεν (threw him into convulsions). ἐπετίμησεν (Rebuked) δὲ (then) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) τῷ (the) πνεύματι (spirit) τῷ (-) ἀκαθάρτῳ (unclean), καὶ (and) ἰάσατο (healed) τὸν (the) παῖδα (boy), καὶ (and) ἀπέδωκεν (gave back) αὐτὸν (him) τῷ (to) πατρὶ (father) αὐτοῦ (of him).

The Second Prediction of the Passion
(Matthew 17:22-23; Mark 9:30-32)

43Ἐξεπλήσσοντο (Were astonished) δὲ (then) πάντες (all) ἐπὶ (at) τῇ (the) μεγαλειότητι (majesty) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God).

Πάντων (Of all) δὲ (however) θαυμαζόντων (wondering) ἐπὶ (at) πᾶσιν (all) οἷς (which) ἐποίει (He did), εἶπεν (He said) πρὸς (to) τοὺς (the) μαθητὰς (disciples) αὐτοῦ (of Him), 44“Θέσθε (Let sink) ὑμεῖς (you) εἰς (into) τὰ (the) ὦτα (ears) ὑμῶν (of you) τοὺς (the) λόγους (words) τούτους (these); ὁ (-) γὰρ (for) Υἱὸς (the Son) τοῦ (-) ἀνθρώπου (of Man) μέλλει (is about) παραδίδοσθαι (to be betrayed) εἰς (into) χεῖρας (the hands) ἀνθρώπων (of men).” 45οἱ (-) δὲ (But) ἠγνόουν (they understand not) τὸ (the) ῥῆμα (saying) τοῦτο (this), καὶ (and) ἦν (it was) παρακεκαλυμμένον (veiled) ἀπ’ (from) αὐτῶν (them), ἵνα (that) μὴ (not) αἴσθωνται (they should understand) αὐτό (it). καὶ (And) ἐφοβοῦντο (they were afraid) ἐρωτῆσαι (to ask) αὐτὸν (Him) περὶ (concerning) τοῦ (the) ῥήματος (saying) τούτου (this).

The Greatest in the Kingdom
(Matthew 18:1-6; Mark 9:33-37)

46Εἰσῆλθεν (Came up) δὲ (then) διαλογισμὸς (an argument) ἐν (among) αὐτοῖς (them), τὸ (this), τίς (who) ἂν (-) εἴη (might be) μείζων (greatest) αὐτῶν (of them). 47ὁ (-) δὲ (But) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), εἰδὼς (having known) τὸν (the) διαλογισμὸν (reasoning) τῆς (of the) καρδίας (heart) αὐτῶν (of them), ἐπιλαβόμενος (having taken hold of) παιδίον (a child), ἔστησεν (set) αὐτὸ (it) παρ’ (by) ἑαυτῷ (Him), 48καὶ (and) εἶπεν (He said) αὐτοῖς (to them), “Ὃς (Whoever) ἐὰν (if) δέξηται (shall receive) τοῦτο (this) τὸ (-) παιδίον (child) ἐπὶ (in) τῷ (the) ὀνόματί (name) μου (of Me), ἐμὲ (Me) δέχεται (receives); καὶ (and) ὃς (whoever) ἂν (-) ἐμὲ (Me) δέξηται (shall receive), δέχεται (receives) τὸν (the One) ἀποστείλαντά (having sent) με (Me). ὁ (The one) γὰρ (for) μικρότερος (least) ἐν (among) πᾶσιν (all) ὑμῖν (you) ὑπάρχων (being), οὗτός (he) ἐστιν (shall be) μέγας (great).”

49Ἀποκριθεὶς (Answering) δὲ (now), 〈ὁ〉 (-) Ἰωάννης (John) εἶπεν (said), “Ἐπιστάτα (Master), εἴδομέν (we saw) τινα (someone) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) ὀνόματί (name) σου (of You) ἐκβάλλοντα (casting out) δαιμόνια (demons), καὶ (and) ἐκωλύομεν (we were forbidding) αὐτὸν (him), ὅτι (because) οὐκ (not) ἀκολουθεῖ (he follows) μεθ’ (with) ἡμῶν (us).”

50Εἶπεν (Said) δὲ (then) πρὸς (to) αὐτὸν (him) ‹ὁ› (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), “Μὴ (Not) κωλύετε (forbid); ὃς (whoever) γὰρ (for) οὐκ (not) ἔστιν (is) καθ’ (against) ὑμῶν (you), ὑπὲρ (for) ὑμῶν (you) ἐστιν (is).”

51Ἐγένετο (It came to pass) δὲ (then) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) συμπληροῦσθαι (completing) τὰς (the) ἡμέρας (days) τῆς (of the) ἀναλήμψεως (ascension) αὐτοῦ (of Him), καὶ (that) αὐτὸς (He) τὸ (the) πρόσωπον (face) ἐστήρισεν (steadfastly set) τοῦ (-) πορεύεσθαι (to go) εἰς (to) Ἰερουσαλήμ (Jerusalem). 52καὶ (And) ἀπέστειλεν (He sent) ἀγγέλους (messengers) πρὸ (before) προσώπου (the face) αὐτοῦ (of Him). καὶ (And) πορευθέντες (having gone), εἰσῆλθον (they entered) εἰς (into) κώμην (a village) Σαμαριτῶν (of the Samaritans), ὡς* (so as) ἑτοιμάσαι (to make ready) αὐτῷ (for Him). 53καὶ (And) οὐκ (not) ἐδέξαντο (they did receive) αὐτόν (Him), ὅτι (because) τὸ (the) πρόσωπον (face) αὐτοῦ (of Him) ἦν (was as) πορευόμενον (going) εἰς (toward) Ἰερουσαλήμ (Jerusalem).

54Ἰδόντες (Having seen it) δὲ (now), οἱ (the) μαθηταὶ (disciples) Ἰάκωβος (James) καὶ (and) Ἰωάννης (John) εἶπαν (said), “Κύριε (Lord), θέλεις (will You that) εἴπωμεν (we should call) πῦρ (fire) καταβῆναι (to come down) ἀπὸ (from) τοῦ (-) οὐρανοῦ (heaven) καὶ (and) ἀναλῶσαι (to consume) αὐτούς (them)?”b

55Στραφεὶς (Having turned) δὲ (then), ἐπετίμησεν (He rebuked) αὐτοῖς (them).c 56καὶ (And) ἐπορεύθησαν (they went) εἰς (to) ἑτέραν (another) κώμην (village).

57Καὶ (And) πορευομένων (going) αὐτῶν (of them) ἐν (along) τῇ (the) ὁδῷ (road), εἶπέν (said) τις (someone) πρὸς (to) αὐτόν (Him), “Ἀκολουθήσω (I will follow) σοι (You) ὅπου (wherever) ἐὰν (if) ἀπέρχῃ (You may go).”

58Καὶ (And) εἶπεν (said) αὐτῷ (to him) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), “Αἱ (The) ἀλώπεκες (foxes) φωλεοὺς (holes) ἔχουσιν (have), καὶ (and) τὰ (the) πετεινὰ (birds) τοῦ (of the) οὐρανοῦ (air) κατασκηνώσεις (nests); ὁ (-) δὲ (but) Υἱὸς (the Son) τοῦ (-) ἀνθρώπου (of Man) οὐκ (not) ἔχει (has) ποῦ (where) τὴν (the) κεφαλὴν (head) κλίνῃ (He might lay).”

59Εἶπεν (He said) δὲ (then) πρὸς (to) ἕτερον (another), “Ἀκολούθει (Follow) μοι (Me).” ὁ (-)

Δὲ (But) εἶπεν (he said), “‹Κύριε› (Lord) Ἐπίτρεψόν (allow) μοι (me) πρῶτον (first), ⇔ ἀπελθόντι (having gone away), θάψαι (to bury) τὸν (the) πατέρα (father) μου (of me).”

60Εἶπεν (He said) δὲ (then) αὐτῷ (to him), “Ἄφες (Leave) τοὺς (the) νεκροὺς (dead) θάψαι (to bury) τοὺς (-) ἑαυτῶν (their own) νεκρούς (dead); σὺ (you) δὲ (however), ἀπελθὼν (having gone forth), διάγγελλε (declare) τὴν (the) βασιλείαν (kingdom) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God).”

61Εἶπεν (Said) δὲ (then) καὶ (also) ἕτερος (another), “Ἀκολουθήσω (I will follow) σοι (You), Κύριε (Lord); πρῶτον (first) δὲ (however) ἐπίτρεψόν (allow) μοι (me) ἀποτάξασθαι (to bid farewell) τοῖς (to those) εἰς (at) τὸν (the) οἶκόν (home) μου (of me).”

62Εἶπεν (Said) δὲ (then) πρὸς (to) αὐτὸν (him) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), “Οὐδεὶς (No one) ἐπιβαλὼν (having laid) τὴν (the) χεῖρα (hand) ἐπ’ (upon) ἄροτρον (the plow), καὶ (and) βλέπων (looking) εἰς (on) τὰ (the things) ὀπίσω (behind), εὔθετός (fit) ἐστιν (is) τῇ (for the) βασιλείᾳ (kingdom) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God).”
