The Beheading of John
(Mark 6:14–29; Luke 9:7–9)
1 Ἐν (At) ἐκείνῳ (that) τῷ (-) καιρῷ (time) ἤκουσεν (heard) Ἡρῴδης (Herod) ὁ (the) τετραάρχης (tetrarch) τὴν (the) ἀκοὴν (news) Ἰησοῦ (of Jesus),
2 καὶ (and) εἶπεν (he said) τοῖς (to) παισὶν (the servants) αὐτοῦ (of him)· Οὗτός (This) ἐστιν (is) Ἰωάννης (John) ὁ (the) Βαπτιστής (Baptist)· αὐτὸς (he) ἠγέρθη (was raised) ἀπὸ (from) τῶν (the) νεκρῶν (dead), καὶ (and) διὰ (because of) τοῦτο (this) αἱ (the) δυνάμεις (miraculous powers) ἐνεργοῦσιν (are working) ἐν (in) αὐτῷ (him).
3 Ὁ (-) γὰρ (For) Ἡρῴδης (Herod) κρατήσας (having seized) τὸν (-) Ἰωάνην (John) ἔδησεν (bound) αὐτὸν (him) καὶ (and) ἐν (in) φυλακῇ (prison) ἀπέθετο (put him) διὰ (because of) Ἡρῳδιάδα (Herodias) τὴν (the) γυναῖκα (wife) Φιλίππου (of Philip) τοῦ (the) ἀδελφοῦ (brother) αὐτοῦ (of him)·
4 ἔλεγεν (Was saying) γὰρ (for) αὐτῷ (to him)· ὁ (-) Ἰωάννης (John) Οὐκ (Not) ἔξεστίν (it is lawful) σοι (for you) ἔχειν (to have) αὐτήν (her).
5 καὶ (And) θέλων (wanting) αὐτὸν (him) ἀποκτεῖναι (to kill) ἐφοβήθη (he feared) τὸν (the) ὄχλον (crowd), ὅτι (because) ὡς (as) προφήτην (a prophet) αὐτὸν (him) εἶχον (they were holding).
6 Γενεσίοις (The birthday) δὲ (now) γενομένοις (having come) τοῦ (-) Ἡρῴδου (of Herod) ὠρχήσατο (danced) ἡ (the) θυγάτηρ (daughter) τῆς (-) Ἡρῳδιάδος (of Herodias) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) μέσῳ (midst) καὶ (and) ἤρεσεν (pleased) τῷ (-) Ἡρῴδῃ (Herod),
7 ὅθεν (whereupon) μεθ’ (with) ὅρκου (an oath) ὡμολόγησεν (he promised) αὐτῇ (to her) δοῦναι (to give) ὃ (whatever) ἐὰν (if) αἰτήσηται (she might ask).
8 Ἡ (-) δὲ (And) προβιβασθεῖσα (having been urged on) ὑπὸ (by) τῆς (the) μητρὸς (mother) αὐτῆς (of her)· Δός (Give) μοι (to me), φησίν (she says), Ὧδε (here) ἐπὶ (upon) πίνακι (a platter) τὴν (the) κεφαλὴν (head) Ἰωάννου (of John) τοῦ (the) Βαπτιστοῦ (Baptist).
9 Καὶ (And) λυπηθεὶς (having been made sorrowful) ὁ (the) βασιλεὺς (king) διὰ (because of) τοὺς (the) ὅρκους (oaths) καὶ (and) τοὺς (those) συνανακειμένους (reclining with him) ἐκέλευσεν (he commanded it) δοθῆναι (to be given),
10 καὶ (And) πέμψας (having sent) ἀπεκεφάλισεν (he beheaded) τὸν (-) Ἰωάννην (John) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) φυλακῇ (prison).
11 Καὶ (And) ἠνέχθη (was brought) ἡ (the) κεφαλὴ (head) αὐτοῦ (of him) ἐπὶ (on) πίνακι (a platter) καὶ (and) ἐδόθη (was given) τῷ (to the) κορασίῳ (girl), καὶ (and) ἤνεγκεν (she brought it) τῇ (to) μητρὶ (the mother) αὐτῆς (of her).
12 καὶ (And) προσελθόντες (having come) οἱ (the) μαθηταὶ (disciples) αὐτοῦ (of him) ἦραν (took up) τὸ (the) πτῶμα (body) καὶ (and) ἔθαψαν (buried) αὐτόν (it), καὶ (and) ἐλθόντες (having come) ἀπήγγειλαν (they reported) τῷ (-) Ἰησοῦ (to Jesus).

13 Ἀκούσας (Having heard) δὲ (now) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) ἀνεχώρησεν (withdrew) ἐκεῖθεν (from there) ἐν (in) πλοίῳ (a boat) εἰς (to) ἔρημον (a wilderness) τόπον (place) κατ’ (by) ἰδίαν (Himself)· καὶ (And) ἀκούσαντες (having heard) οἱ (the) ὄχλοι (crowds) ἠκολούθησαν (followed) αὐτῷ (Him) πεζῇ (on foot) ἀπὸ (from) τῶν (the) πόλεων (cities).
14 Καὶ (And) ἐξελθὼν (having gone out) εἶδεν (He saw) πολὺν (great) ὄχλον (a crowd), καὶ (and) ἐσπλαγχνίσθη (was moved with compassion) ἐπ’ (toward) αὐτοῖς (them) καὶ (and) ἐθεράπευσεν (He healed) τοὺς (the) ἀρρώστους (sick) αὐτῶν (of them).
15 Ὀψίας (Evening) δὲ (now) γενομένης (having come) προσῆλθον (came) αὐτῷ (to Him) οἱ (the) μαθηταὶ (disciples) λέγοντες (saying)· Ἔρημός (Desolate) ἐστιν (is) ὁ (this) τόπος (place) καὶ (and) ἡ (the) ὥρα (time) ἤδη (already) παρῆλθεν (is gone by)· ἀπόλυσον (Dismiss) οὖν (therefore) τοὺς (the) ὄχλους (crowds), ἵνα (so that) ἀπελθόντες (having gone) εἰς (to) τὰς (the) κώμας (villages) ἀγοράσωσιν (they might buy) ἑαυτοῖς (for themselves) βρώματα (food).
16 Ὁ (-) δὲ (But) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) εἶπεν (said) αὐτοῖς (to them)· Οὐ (No) χρείαν (need) ἔχουσιν (they have) ἀπελθεῖν (to go away)· δότε (Give) αὐτοῖς (them) ὑμεῖς (you⁺) φαγεῖν (to eat).
17 Οἱ (-) δὲ (And) λέγουσιν (they say) αὐτῷ (to Him)· Οὐκ (Not) ἔχομεν (we have) ὧδε (here) εἰ (if) μὴ (not) πέντε (five) ἄρτους (loaves) καὶ (and) δύο (two) ἰχθύας (fish).
18 Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) εἶπεν (He said)· Φέρετέ (Bring) μοι (to Me) ὧδε (here) αὐτούς (them).
19 καὶ (And) κελεύσας (having commanded) τοὺς (the) ὄχλους (crowds) ἀνακλιθῆναι (to sit down) ἐπὶ (on) τοῦ (the) χόρτου (grass), λαβὼν (having taken) τοὺς (the) πέντε (five) ἄρτους (loaves) καὶ (and) τοὺς (the) δύο (two) ἰχθύας (fish), ἀναβλέψας (having looked up) εἰς (to) τὸν (the) οὐρανὸν (heaven) εὐλόγησεν (He blessed), καὶ (and) κλάσας (having broken) ἔδωκεν (He gave) τοῖς (to the) μαθηταῖς (disciples) τοὺς (the) ἄρτους (loaves), οἱ (-) δὲ (and) μαθηταὶ (the disciples) τοῖς (to the) ὄχλοις (crowds).
20 Καὶ (And) ἔφαγον (ate) πάντες (all) καὶ (and) ἐχορτάσθησαν (were satisfied), καὶ (and) ἦραν (they took up) τὸ (the) περισσεῦον (superabounding) τῶν (of the) κλασμάτων (fragments) δώδεκα (twelve) κοφίνους (hand-baskets) πλήρεις (full).
21 οἱ (Those) δὲ (now) ἐσθίοντες (eating) ἦσαν (were) ἄνδρες (men) ὡσεὶ (about) πεντακισχίλιοι (five thousand) χωρὶς (apart from) γυναικῶν (women) καὶ (and) παιδίων (children).

22 Καὶ (And) εὐθέως (immediately) ἠνάγκασεν (He compelled) τοὺς (the) μαθητὰς (disciples) ἐμβῆναι (to enter) εἰς (into) τὸ (the) πλοῖον (boat) καὶ (and) προάγειν (to go before) αὐτὸν (Him) εἰς (to) τὸ (the) πέραν (other side), ἕως (until) οὗ (that) ἀπολύσῃ (He might dismiss) τοὺς (the) ὄχλους (crowds).
23 καὶ (And) ἀπολύσας (having dismissed) τοὺς (the) ὄχλους (crowds) ἀνέβη (He went up) εἰς (on) τὸ (the) ὄρος (mountain) κατ’ (by) ἰδίαν (Himself) προσεύξασθαι (to pray). ὀψίας (Evening) δὲ (now) γενομένης (having come) μόνος (alone) ἦν (He was) ἐκεῖ (there).
24 τὸ (-) δὲ (And) πλοῖον (the boat) ἤδη (now) σταδίους (stadia) πολλοὺς (many) ἀπὸ (from) τῆς (the) γῆς (land) ἀπεῖχεν (being), βασανιζόμενον (is distressed) ὑπὸ (by) τῶν (the) κυμάτων (waves), ἦν (was) γὰρ (for) ἐναντίος (contrary was) ὁ (the) ἄνεμος (wind).
25 Τετάρτῃ (In the fourth) δὲ (now) φυλακῇ (watch) τῆς (of the) νυκτὸς (night) ἦλθεν (He went) πρὸς (to) αὐτοὺς (them) περιπατῶν (walking) ἐπὶ (on) τὴν (the) θάλασσαν (sea).
26 οἱ (-) δὲ (And) μαθηταὶ (the disciples) ἰδόντες (having seen) αὐτὸν (Him) ἐπὶ (on) τῆς (the) θαλάσσης (sea) περιπατοῦντα (walking) ἐταράχθησαν (were troubled) λέγοντες (saying) ὅτι (-) Φάντασμά (A ghost) ἐστιν (it is), καὶ (And) ἀπὸ (in) τοῦ (-) φόβου (fear) ἔκραξαν (they cried out).
27 Εὐθὺς (Immediately) δὲ (now) ἐλάλησεν (spoke) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) αὐτοῖς (to them) λέγων (saying)· Θαρσεῖτε (Take courage), ἐγώ (I) εἰμι (am He)· μὴ (Not) φοβεῖσθε (do be afraid).
28 Ἀποκριθεὶς (Answering) δὲ (now) αὐτῷ (to Him) ὁ (-) Πέτρος (Peter) εἶπεν (said)· Κύριε (Lord), εἰ (if) σὺ (You) εἶ (are He), κέλευσόν (command) με (me) ἐλθεῖν (to come) πρὸς (to) σὲ (You) ἐπὶ (on) τὰ (the) ὕδατα (waters).
29 Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) εἶπεν (He said)· Ἐλθέ (Come).
Καὶ (And) καταβὰς (having gone down) ἀπὸ (from) τοῦ (the) πλοίου (boat) ὁ (-) Πέτρος (Peter) περιεπάτησεν (walked) ἐπὶ (on) τὰ (the) ὕδατα (waters) καὶ (and) ἦλθεν (came) πρὸς (to) τὸν (-) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus).
30 βλέπων (Seeing) δὲ (now) τὸν (the) ἄνεμον (wind) ἰσχυρὸν (strong) ἐφοβήθη (he was afraid), καὶ (and) ἀρξάμενος (having begun) καταποντίζεσθαι (to sink) ἔκραξεν (he cried out) λέγων (saying)· Κύριε (Lord), σῶσόν (save) με (me).
31 Εὐθέως (Immediately) δὲ (now) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) ἐκτείνας (having stretched out) τὴν (the) χεῖρα (hand) ἐπελάβετο (took hold) αὐτοῦ (of him) καὶ (and) λέγει (says) αὐτῷ (to him)· Ὀλιγόπιστε (O little of faith), εἰς (for) τί (what) ἐδίστασας (did you waver)?
32 Καὶ (And) ἀναβάντων (having gone up) αὐτῶν (they) εἰς (into) τὸ (the) πλοῖον (boat) ἐκόπασεν (abated) ὁ (the) ἄνεμος (wind).
33 οἱ (Those) δὲ (then) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) πλοίῳ (boat) προσεκύνησαν (worshiped) αὐτῷ (Him) λέγοντες (saying)· Ἀληθῶς (Truly) Θεοῦ (God's) Υἱὸς (Son) εἶ (You are).

34 Καὶ (And) διαπεράσαντες (having crossed over) ἦλθον (they came) ἐπὶ (to) τὴν (the) γῆν (land) εἰς (of) Γεννησαρέτ (Gennesaret).
35 καὶ (And) ἐπιγνόντες (having recognized) αὐτὸν (Him) οἱ (the) ἄνδρες (men) τοῦ (the) τόπου (place) ἐκείνου (of that) ἀπέστειλαν (sent) εἰς (to) ὅλην (all) τὴν (the) περίχωρον (surrounding region) ἐκείνην (that), καὶ (and) προσήνεγκαν (they brought) αὐτῷ (to Him) πάντας (all) τοὺς (those) κακῶς (ill) ἔχοντας (being),
36 καὶ (and) παρεκάλουν (they were imploring) αὐτὸν (Him) ἵνα (that) μόνον (only) ἅψωνται (they might touch) τοῦ (the) κρασπέδου (fringe) τοῦ (of the) ἱματίου (garment) αὐτοῦ (of Him)· καὶ (And) ὅσοι (as many as) ἥψαντο (touched) διεσώθησαν (were saved).
