Matthew 15

The Tradition of the Elders
(Mark 7:1–13)

1  Τότε (Then) προσέρχονται (come) τῷ (-) Ἰησοῦ (to Jesus) ἀπὸ (from) Ἱεροσολύμων (Jerusalem) Φαρισαῖοι (Pharisees) καὶ (and) γραμματεῖς (scribes) λέγοντες (saying)· 2  Διὰ (Because of) τί (why) οἱ (the) μαθηταί (disciples) σου (of You) παραβαίνουσιν (transgress) τὴν (the) παράδοσιν (tradition) τῶν (of the) πρεσβυτέρων (elders)? οὐ (Not) γὰρ (for) νίπτονται (they wash) τὰς (the) χεῖρας (hands) αὐτῶν (of them) ὅταν (when) ἄρτον (bread) ἐσθίωσιν (they shall eat).

3  (-) δὲ (And) ἀποκριθεὶς (answering) εἶπεν (He said) αὐτοῖς (to them)· Διὰ (Because of) τί (why) καὶ (also) ὑμεῖς (you⁺) παραβαίνετε (transgress) τὴν (the) ἐντολὴν (commandment) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) διὰ (because of) τὴν (the) παράδοσιν (tradition) ὑμῶν (of you⁺)? 4  (-) γὰρ (For) Θεὸς (God) εἶπεν (said)· Τίμα (Honor) τὸν (the) πατέρα (father) καὶ (and) τὴν (the) μητέρα (mother), καί (and)· (The one) κακολογῶν (speaking evil of) πατέρα (father) (or) μητέρα (mother) θανάτῳ (in death) τελευτάτω (let him end)· 5  ὑμεῖς (You⁺) δὲ (however) λέγετε (say)· Ὃς (Whoever) ἂν (-) εἴπῃ (might say) τῷ (to the) πατρὶ (father) (or) τῇ (to the) μητρί (mother)· Δῶρον (It is a gift) (whatever) ἐὰν (if) ἐξ (by) ἐμοῦ (me) ὠφεληθῇς (you might be profited), 6  οὐ (no) μὴ (not) τιμήσει (he shall honor) τὸν (the) πατέρα (father) αὐτοῦ (of himself) (or) τὴν (the) μητέρα (mother) αὐτοῦ (of himself)· καὶ (And) ἠκυρώσατε (you⁺ made void) τὸν (the) λόγον (word) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) διὰ (because of) τὴν (the) παράδοσιν (tradition) ὑμῶν (of you⁺). 7  ὑποκριταί (Hypocrites), καλῶς (Correctly) ἐπροφήτευσεν (prophesied) περὶ (about) ὑμῶν (you⁺) Ἠσαΐας (Isaiah) λέγων (saying)·

8  (The) λαὸς (people) οὗτος (this) τοῖς (with the) χείλεσίν (lips) με (Me) τιμᾷ (it honors),

(the) δὲ (however) καρδία (heart) αὐτῶν (of them) πόρρω (far away) ἀπέχει (is kept) ἀπ’ (from) ἐμοῦ (Me)·

9  Μάτην (in vain) δὲ (then) σέβονταί (they worship) με (Me),

Διδάσκοντες (teaching) διδασκαλίας (as teachings) ἐντάλματα (the precepts) ἀνθρώπων (of men).

What Defiles a Man
(Mark 7:14–23)

10  Καὶ (And) προσκαλεσάμενος (having summoned) τὸν (the) ὄχλον (crowd) εἶπεν (He said) αὐτοῖς (to them)· Ἀκούετε (Hear) καὶ (and) συνίετε (understand)· 11  οὐ (Not) τὸ (what) εἰσερχόμενον (is entering) εἰς (into) τὸ (the) στόμα (mouth) κοινοῖ (defiles) τὸν (the) ἄνθρωπον (man), ἀλλὰ (but) τὸ (what) ἐκπορευόμενον (is proceeding) ἐκ (out of) τοῦ (the) στόματος (mouth) τοῦτο (this) κοινοῖ (defiles) τὸν (the) ἄνθρωπον (man).

12  Τότε (Then) προσελθόντες (having come) οἱ (the) μαθηταὶ (disciples) λέγουσιν (said) αὐτῷ (to Him)· Οἶδας (Do You know) ὅτι (that) οἱ (the) Φαρισαῖοι (Pharisees) ἀκούσαντες (having heard) τὸν (the) λόγον (saying) ἐσκανδαλίσθησαν (were offended)?

13  (-) δὲ (And) ἀποκριθεὶς (answering) εἶπεν (He said)· Πᾶσα (Every) φυτεία (plant) ἣν (that) οὐκ (not) ἐφύτευσεν (planted) (the) Πατήρ (Father) μου (of Me) (-) οὐράνιος (heavenly) ἐκριζωθήσεται (it will be uprooted). 14  ἄφετε (Leave) αὐτούς (them)· τυφλοί (Blind) εἰσιν (they are) ὁδηγοί (guides) τυφλῶν (of blind men) τυφλὸς (A blind man)· δὲ (now) τυφλὸν (a blind man) ἐὰν (if) ὁδηγῇ (may guide), ἀμφότεροι (both) εἰς (into) βόθυνον (a pit) πεσοῦνται (will fall).

15  Ἀποκριθεὶς (Answering) δὲ (then) (-) Πέτρος (Peter) εἶπεν (said) αὐτῷ (to Him)· Φράσον (Explain) ἡμῖν (to us) τὴν (the) παραβολήν (parable) ταύτην (this).

16  (-) δὲ (And) εἶπεν (He said)· Ἀκμὴν (Still) καὶ (also) ὑμεῖς (you⁺) ἀσύνετοί (without understanding) ἐστε (are)? 17  οὐ (Not) νοεῖτε (do you⁺ perceive) ὅτι (that) πᾶν (everything) τὸ (-) εἰσπορευόμενον (entering) εἰς (into) τὸ (the) στόμα (mouth) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) κοιλίαν (belly) χωρεῖ (goes) καὶ (and) εἰς (into) ἀφεδρῶνα (the sewer) ἐκβάλλεται (is cast out)? 18  τὰ (The things) δὲ (however) ἐκπορευόμενα (proceeding) ἐκ (out of) τοῦ (the) στόματος (mouth) ἐκ (out of) τῆς (the) καρδίας (heart) ἐξέρχεται (come forth), κἀκεῖνα (and these) κοινοῖ (defile) τὸν (the) ἄνθρωπον (man). 19  ἐκ (Out of) γὰρ (for) τῆς (the) καρδίας (heart) ἐξέρχονται (come forth) διαλογισμοὶ (thoughts) πονηροί (evil), φόνοι (murders), μοιχεῖαι (adulteries), πορνεῖαι (sexual immorality), κλοπαί (thefts), ψευδομαρτυρίαι (false testimonies), βλασφημίαι (slanders). 20  ταῦτά (These) ἐστιν (are) τὰ (the things) κοινοῦντα (defiling) τὸν (the) ἄνθρωπον (man)· τὸ (-) δὲ (but) ἀνίπτοις (with unwashed) χερσὶν (hands) φαγεῖν (to eat) οὐ (not) κοινοῖ (defiles) τὸν (the) ἄνθρωπον (man).

21  Καὶ (And) ἐξελθὼν (having gone out) ἐκεῖθεν (from there) (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) ἀνεχώρησεν (withdrew) εἰς (to) τὰ (the) μέρη (parts) Τύρου (of Tyre) καὶ (and) Σιδῶνος (Sidon). 22  καὶ (And) ἰδοὺ (behold) γυνὴ (a woman) Χαναναία (Canaanite) ἀπὸ (from) τῶν (the) ὁρίων (borders) ἐκείνων (those) ἐξελθοῦσα (having come out) ἔκραζεν (was crying out) λέγουσα (saying)· Ἐλέησόν (Have mercy on) με (me), Κύριε (Lord) υἱὸς (Son) Δαυίδ (of David)· (the) θυγάτηρ (daughter) μου (of me) κακῶς (miserably) δαιμονίζεται (is possessed by a demon).

23  (-) δὲ (And) οὐκ (not) ἀπεκρίθη (He answered) αὐτῇ (her) λόγον (a word). καὶ (And) προσελθόντες (having come) οἱ (the) μαθηταὶ (disciples) αὐτοῦ (of Him) ἠρώτουν (were imploring) αὐτὸν (Him) λέγοντες (saying)· Ἀπόλυσον (Dismiss) αὐτήν (her), ὅτι (because) κράζει (she cries out) ὄπισθεν (after) ἡμῶν (us).

24  (-) δὲ (And) ἀποκριθεὶς (answering) εἶπεν (He said)· Οὐκ (Not) ἀπεστάλην (I was sent) εἰ (if) μὴ (not) εἰς (to) τὰ (the) πρόβατα (sheep) τὰ (-) ἀπολωλότα (lost) οἴκου (of the house) Ἰσραήλ (of Israel).

25  (-) δὲ (And) ἐλθοῦσα (having come) προσεκύνει (she was worshiping) αὐτῷ (Him) λέγουσα (saying)· Κύριε (Lord), βοήθει (help) μοι (me).

26  (-) δὲ (And) ἀποκριθεὶς (answering) εἶπεν (He said)· Οὐκ (Not) ἔστιν (it is) καλὸν (good) λαβεῖν (to take) τὸν (the) ἄρτον (bread) τῶν (of the) τέκνων (children) καὶ (and) βαλεῖν (to cast it) τοῖς (to the) κυναρίοις (dogs).

27  (-) δὲ (And) εἶπεν (she said)· Ναί (Yes), κύριε (Lord)· καὶ (even) γὰρ (for) τὰ (the) κυνάρια (dogs) ἐσθίει (eat) ἀπὸ (from) τῶν (the) ψιχίων (crumbs) τῶν (-) πιπτόντων (falling) ἀπὸ (from) τῆς (the) τραπέζης (table) τῶν (of the) κυρίων (masters) αὐτῶν (of them).

28  Τότε (Then) ἀποκριθεὶς (answering) (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) εἶπεν (said) αὐτῇ (to her)· (O) γύναι (woman), μεγάλη (great is) σου (of you) (the) πίστις (faith)· γενηθήτω (Let it be) σοι (to you) ὡς (as) θέλεις (you desire). καὶ (And) ἰάθη (was healed) (the) θυγάτηρ (daughter) αὐτῆς (of her) ἀπὸ (from) τῆς (the) ὥρας (hour) ἐκείνης (that).

29  Καὶ (And) μεταβὰς (having departed) ἐκεῖθεν (from there) (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) ἦλθεν (went) παρὰ (along) τὴν (the) θάλασσαν (Sea) τῆς (-) Γαλιλαίας (of Galilee), καὶ (and) ἀναβὰς (having gone up) εἰς (on) τὸ (the) ὄρος (mountain) ἐκάθητο (He was sitting) ἐκεῖ (there). 30  καὶ (And) προσῆλθον (came) αὐτῷ (to Him) ὄχλοι (crowds) πολλοὶ (many) ἔχοντες (having) μεθ’ (with) ἑαυτῶν (them) χωλούς (the lame), τυφλούς (the blind), κυλλούς (the crippled), κωφούς (the mute), καὶ (and) ἑτέρους (others) πολλούς (many), καὶ (and) ἔρριψαν (they cast) αὐτοὺς (them) παρὰ (at) τοὺς (the) πόδας (feet) αὐτοῦ (of Him)· καὶ (and) ἐθεράπευσεν (He healed) αὐτούς (them)· 31  ὥστε (so that) τὸν (the) ὄχλον (crowd) θαυμάσαι (marveled) βλέποντας (seeing) κωφοὺς (the mute) λαλοῦντας (speaking) κυλλοὺς (the crippled) ὑγιεῖς (restored) καὶ (and) χωλοὺς (the lame) περιπατοῦντας (walking) καὶ (and) τυφλοὺς (the blind) βλέποντας (seeing)· καὶ (and) ἐδόξασαν (they glorified) τὸν (the) Θεὸν (God) Ἰσραήλ (of Israel).

32  (-) δὲ (And) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) προσκαλεσάμενος (having summoned) τοὺς (the) μαθητὰς (disciples) αὐτοῦ (of Him) εἶπεν (said)· Σπλαγχνίζομαι (I have compassion) ἐπὶ (toward) τὸν (the) ὄχλον (crowd), ὅτι (because) ἤδη (already) ἡμέραι (days) τρεῖς (three) προσμένουσίν (they continue) μοι (with Me) καὶ (and) οὐκ (nothing) ἔχουσιν (they have) τί (that) φάγωσιν (they might eat)· καὶ (and) ἀπολῦσαι (to dismiss) αὐτοὺς (them) νήστεις (hungry) οὐ (not) θέλω (I want), μή‿ (not) ποτε (lest) ἐκλυθῶσιν (they faint) ἐν (on) τῇ (the) ὁδῷ (way).

33  Καὶ (And) λέγουσιν (say) αὐτῷ (to Him) οἱ (the) μαθηταί (disciples)· Πόθεν (From where) ἡμῖν (unto us) ἐν (in) ἐρημίᾳ (a secluded place) ἄρτοι (loaves) τοσοῦτοι (are so many) ὥστε (so as) χορτάσαι (to satisfy) ὄχλον (a crowd) τοσοῦτον (so great)?

34  Καὶ (And) λέγει (says) αὐτοῖς (to them) (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus)· Πόσους (How many) ἄρτους (loaves) ἔχετε (do you⁺ have)?

Οἱ (-) δὲ (And) εἶπαν (they said)· Ἑπτά (Seven), καὶ (and) ὀλίγα (a few) ἰχθύδια (small fish).

35  Καὶ (And) παραγγείλας (having commanded) τῷ (the) ὄχλῳ (crowd) ἀναπεσεῖν (to sit down) ἐπὶ (on) τὴν (the) γῆν (ground) 36  ἔλαβεν (He took) τοὺς (the) ἑπτὰ (seven) ἄρτους (loaves) καὶ (and) τοὺς (the) ἰχθύας (fish) καὶ (and) εὐχαριστήσας (having given thanks) ἔκλασεν (He broke them) καὶ (and) ἐδίδου (was giving them) τοῖς (to) μαθηταῖς (disciples), οἱ (-) δὲ (and the) μαθηταὶ (disciples) τοῖς (to the) ὄχλοις (crowds).

37  Καὶ (And) ἔφαγον (ate) πάντες (all) καὶ (and) ἐχορτάσθησαν (were satisfied), καὶ (and) τὸ (the) περισσεῦον (superabounding) τῶν (of the) κλασμάτων (fragments) ἦραν (they took up) ἑπτὰ (seven) σπυρίδας (baskets) πλήρεις (full). 38  οἱ (Those) δὲ (then) ἐσθίοντες (eating) ἦσαν (were) τετρακισχίλιοι (four thousand) ἄνδρες (men) χωρὶς (apart from) γυναικῶν (women) καὶ (and) παιδίων (children).

39  Καὶ (And) ἀπολύσας (having dismissed) τοὺς (the) ὄχλους (crowds) ἐνέβη (He entered) εἰς (into) τὸ (the) πλοῖον (boat), καὶ (and) ἦλθεν (went) εἰς (to) τὰ (the) ὅρια (borders) Μαγαδάν (of Magadan).
