Luke 10

Jesus Sends the Seventy-Two
(Matthew 9:35–38)

1  Μετὰ (After) δὲ (now) ταῦτα (these things) ἀνέδειξεν (appointed) (the) Κύριος (Lord) καὶ (also) ἑτέρους (others) ἑβδομήκοντα (seventy) δύο (two), καὶ (and) ἀπέστειλεν (sent) αὐτοὺς (them) ἀνὰ (in) δύο (two by) δύο (two) πρὸ (before) προσώπου (the face) αὐτοῦ (of Himself) εἰς (into) πᾶσαν (every) πόλιν (city) καὶ (and) τόπον (place) οὗ (where) ἤμελλεν (was about) αὐτὸς (He Himself) ἔρχεσθαι (to go). 2  ἔλεγεν (He was saying) δὲ (then) πρὸς (to) αὐτούς (them)· (The) μὲν (indeed) θερισμὸς (harvest) πολύς (is much), οἱ (-) δὲ (but) ἐργάται (the workers) ὀλίγοι (few)· δεήθητε (Implore) οὖν (therefore) τοῦ (the) Κυρίου (Lord) τοῦ (of the) θερισμοῦ (harvest) ὅπως (that) ἐργάτας (workers) ἐκβάλῃ (He might put forth) εἰς (into) τὸν (the) θερισμὸν (harvest) αὐτοῦ (of Him).

3  Ὑπάγετε (Go)· ἰδοὺ (Behold) ἀποστέλλω (I send forth) ὑμᾶς (you⁺) ὡς (as) ἄρνας (lambs) ἐν (in) μέσῳ (the midst) λύκων (of wolves). 4  μὴ (Not) βαστάζετε (carry) βαλλάντιον (purse), μὴ (no) πήραν (bag), μὴ (no) ὑποδήματα (sandals)· καὶ (and) μηδένα (no one) κατὰ (on) τὴν (the) ὁδὸν (road) ἀσπάσησθε (greet).

5  Εἰς (Into) ἣν (whatever) δ’ (now) ἂν (-) εἰσέλθητε (you⁺ might enter) οἰκίαν (house), πρῶτον (first) λέγετε (say)· Εἰρήνη (Peace) τῷ (to the) οἴκῳ (house) τούτῳ (this). 6  καὶ (And) ἐὰν (if) ἐκεῖ (there) (is) υἱὸς (a son) εἰρήνης (of peace), ἐπαναπαήσεται (will rest) ἐπ’ (on) αὐτὸν (him) (the) εἰρήνη (peace) ὑμῶν (of you⁺)· εἰ (if) δὲ (however) μή¦γε (not), ἐφ’ (to) ὑμᾶς (you⁺) ἀνακάμψει (it will return). 7  ἐν (In) αὐτῇ (the same) δὲ (now) τῇ (-) οἰκίᾳ (house) μένετε (remain), ἐσθίοντες (eating) καὶ (and) πίνοντες (drinking) τὰ (the things) παρ’ (unto) αὐτῶν (them)· ἄξιος (worthy is) γὰρ (for) (the) ἐργάτης (worker) τοῦ (of the) μισθοῦ (wages) αὐτοῦ (of him). μὴ (Not) μεταβαίνετε (move) ἐξ (from) οἰκίας (house) εἰς (to) οἰκίαν (house).

8  Καὶ (And) εἰς (into) ἣν (whatever) ἂν (-) πόλιν (city) εἰσέρχησθε (you⁺ may enter) καὶ (and) δέχωνται (they may receive) ὑμᾶς (you⁺), ἐσθίετε (eat) τὰ (the things) παρατιθέμενα (set before) ὑμῖν (you⁺), 9  καὶ (And) θεραπεύετε (heal) τοὺς (-) ἐν (in) αὐτῇ (it) ἀσθενεῖς (the ailing), καὶ (and) λέγετε (say) αὐτοῖς (to them)· Ἤγγικεν (Has drawn near) ἐφ’ (to) ὑμᾶς (you⁺) (the) βασιλεία (kingdom) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God).

10  Εἰς (Into) ἣν (whatever) δ’ (now) ἂν (-) πόλιν (city) εἰσέλθητε (you⁺ might enter) καὶ (and) μὴ (not) δέχωνται (they may receive) ὑμᾶς (you⁺), ἐξελθόντες (having gone out) εἰς (into) τὰς (the) πλατείας (streets) αὐτῆς (of it) εἴπατε (say)· 11  Καὶ (Even) τὸν (the) κονιορτὸν (dust) τὸν (-) κολληθέντα (having clung) ἡμῖν (to us) ἐκ (of) τῆς (the) πόλεως (city) ὑμῶν (of you⁺) εἰς (to) τοὺς (the) πόδας (feet) ἀπομασσόμεθα (we wipe off) ὑμῖν (against you⁺)· πλὴν (yet) τοῦτο (this) γινώσκετε (know), ὅτι (that) ἤγγικεν (has drawn near) (the) βασιλεία (kingdom) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God). 12  λέγω (I say) ὑμῖν (to you⁺) ὅτι (that) Σοδόμοις (for Sodom) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) ἡμέρᾳ (day) ἐκείνῃ (that) ἀνεκτότερον (more bearable) ἔσται (it will be) (than) τῇ (the) πόλει (city) ἐκείνῃ (for that).

Woe to the Unrepentant
(Matthew 11:20–24)

13  Οὐαί (Woe) σοι (to you), Χοραζίν (Chorazin), οὐαί (Woe) σοι (to you), Βηθσαϊδά (Bethsaida)· ὅτι (For) εἰ (if) ἐν (in) Τύρῳ (Tyre) καὶ (and) Σιδῶνι (Sidon) ἐγενήθησαν (had happened) αἱ (the) δυνάμεις (miracles) αἱ (-) γενόμεναι (having happened) ἐν (in) ὑμῖν (you⁺), πάλαι (long ago) ἂν (-) ἐν (in) σάκκῳ (sackcloth) καὶ (and) σποδῷ (ashes) καθήμενοι (sitting) μετενόησαν (they would have repented). 14  πλὴν (But) Τύρῳ (for Tyre) καὶ (and) Σιδῶνι (Sidon) ἀνεκτότερον (more bearable) ἔσται (will it be) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) κρίσει (judgment) (than) ὑμῖν (for you⁺).

15  καὶ (And) σύ (you), Καφαρναούμ (Capernaum), μὴ (not) ἕως (to) οὐρανοῦ (heaven) ὑψωθήσῃ (will you be lifted up)? ἕως (To) τοῦ (-) ᾅδου (Hades) καταβήσῃ (you will be brought down).

16  (The one) ἀκούων (hearing) ὑμῶν (you⁺) ἐμοῦ (Me) ἀκούει (hears), καὶ (and) (the one) ἀθετῶν (setting aside) ὑμᾶς (you⁺) ἐμὲ (Me) ἀθετεῖ (sets aside)· (the one) δὲ (now) ἐμὲ (Me) ἀθετῶν (setting aside) ἀθετεῖ (rejects) τὸν (the One) ἀποστείλαντά (having sent) με (Me).

The Joyful Return

17  Ὑπέστρεψαν (Returned) δὲ (then) οἱ (the) ἑβδομήκοντα (seventy) δύο (two) μετὰ (with) χαρᾶς (joy) λέγοντες (saying)· Κύριε (Lord), καὶ (even) τὰ (the) δαιμόνια (demons) ὑποτάσσεται (are subject) ἡμῖν (to us) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) ὀνόματί (name) σου (of You).

18  Εἶπεν (He said) δὲ (then) αὐτοῖς (to them)· Ἐθεώρουν (I was beholding) τὸν (-) Σατανᾶν (Satan) ὡς (like) ἀστραπὴν (lightning) ἐκ (out of) τοῦ (the) οὐρανοῦ (heaven) πεσόντα (having fallen). 19  ἰδοὺ (Behold) δέδωκα (I have given) ὑμῖν (you⁺) τὴν (the) ἐξουσίαν (authority) τοῦ (-) πατεῖν (to tread) ἐπάνω (upon) ὄφεων (serpents) καὶ (and) σκορπίων (scorpions), καὶ (and) ἐπὶ (on) πᾶσαν (all) τὴν (the) δύναμιν (power) τοῦ (of the) ἐχθροῦ (enemy), καὶ (and) οὐδὲν (nothing) ὑμᾶς (you⁺) οὐ (no) μὴ (not) ἀδικήσῃ (will injure). 20  πλὴν (But) ἐν (in) τούτῳ (this) μὴ (not) χαίρετε (rejoice) ὅτι (that) τὰ (the) πνεύματα (spirits) ὑμῖν (to you⁺) ὑποτάσσεται (are subject), χαίρετε (rejoice) δὲ (however) ὅτι (that) τὰ (the) ὀνόματα (names) ὑμῶν (of you⁺) ἐνγέγραπται (have been written) ἐν (in) τοῖς (the) οὐρανοῖς (heavens).

22  Πάντα (All things) μοι (to Me) παρεδόθη (were delivered) ὑπὸ (by) τοῦ (the) Πατρός (Father) μου (of Me), καὶ (And) οὐδεὶς (no one) γινώσκει (knows) τίς (who) ἐστιν (is) (the) Υἱὸς (Son) εἰ (if) μὴ (not) (the) Πατήρ (Father), καὶ (and) τίς (who) ἐστιν (is) (the) Πατὴρ (Father) εἰ (if) μὴ (not) (the) Υἱὸς (Son) καὶ (and) (the one to whom) ἐὰν (if) βούληται (may resolve) (the) Υἱὸς (Son) ἀποκαλύψαι (to reveal Him).

23  Καὶ (And) στραφεὶς (having turned) πρὸς (to) τοὺς (the) μαθητὰς (disciples) κατ’ (in) ἰδίαν (private) εἶπεν (He said)· Μακάριοι (Blessed are) οἱ (the) ὀφθαλμοὶ (eyes) οἱ (-) βλέποντες (seeing) (what) βλέπετε (you⁺ see). 24  λέγω (I say) γὰρ (for) ὑμῖν (to you⁺) ὅτι (that) πολλοὶ (many) προφῆται (prophets) καὶ (and) βασιλεῖς (kings) ἠθέλησαν (desired) ἰδεῖν (to see) (what) ὑμεῖς (you⁺) βλέπετε (see) καὶ (and) οὐκ (not) εἶδαν (saw), καὶ (and) ἀκοῦσαι (to hear) (what) ἀκούετε (you⁺ hear) καὶ (and) οὐκ (not) ἤκουσαν (heard).

25  Καὶ (And) ἰδοὺ (behold) νομικός (a lawyer) τις (certain) ἀνέστη (rose up) ἐκπειράζων (testing) αὐτὸν (Him) λέγων (saying)· Διδάσκαλε (Teacher), τί (what) ποιήσας (having done) ζωὴν (life) αἰώνιον (eternal) κληρονομήσω (will I inherit)?

26  (-) δὲ (And) εἶπεν (He said) πρὸς (to) αὐτόν (him)· Ἐν (In) τῷ (the) νόμῳ (Law) τί (what) γέγραπται (has been written)? πῶς (How) ἀναγινώσκεις (do you read it)?

28  Εἶπεν (He said) δὲ (then) αὐτῷ (to him)· Ὀρθῶς (Correctly) ἀπεκρίθης (you answered)· τοῦτο (This) ποίει (do) καὶ (and) ζήσῃ (you will live).

29  (-) δὲ (But) θέλων (wanting) δικαιῶσαι (to justify) ἑαυτὸν (himself) εἶπεν (he said) πρὸς (to) τὸν (-) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus)· Καὶ (And) τίς (who) ἐστίν (is) μου (my) πλησίον (neighbor)?

30  Ὑπολαβὼν (having taken it up) δὲ (then) (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) εἶπεν (said)· Ἄνθρωπός (A man) τις (certain) κατέβαινεν (was going down) ἀπὸ (from) Ἰερουσαλὴμ (Jerusalem) εἰς (to) Ἰεριχὼ (Jericho), καὶ (and) λῃσταῖς (robbers) περιέπεσεν (fell among), οἳ (who) καὶ (both) ἐκδύσαντες (having stripped) αὐτὸν (him) καὶ (and) πληγὰς (wounds) ἐπιθέντες (having inflicted) ἀπῆλθον (went away) ἀφέντες (having left him) ἡμιθανῆ (half dead).

31  Κατὰ (By) συγκυρίαν (chance) δὲ (now) ἱερεύς (a priest) τις (certain) κατέβαινεν (was going down) ἐν (on) τῇ (the) ὁδῷ (road) ἐκείνῃ (that), καὶ (and) ἰδὼν (having seen) αὐτὸν (him) ἀντιπαρῆλθεν (he passed by on the opposite side).

32  Ὁμοίως (Likewise) δὲ (now) καὶ (also) Λευίτης (a Levite) γενόμενος (having come) κατὰ (to) τὸν (the) τόπον (place) ἐλθὼν (having come) καὶ (and) ἰδὼν (having seen) ἀντιπαρῆλθεν (passed by on the opposite side).

35  Καὶ (And) ἐπὶ (on) τὴν (the) αὔριον (next day) ἐκβαλὼν (having taken out) ἔδωκεν (he gave them) δύο (two) δηνάρια (denarii) τῷ (to the) πανδοχεῖ (innkeeper) καὶ (and) εἶπεν (said)· Ἐπιμελήθητι (Take care) αὐτοῦ (of him), καὶ (and) (whatever) τι (more) ἂν (-) προσδαπανήσῃς (you might expend) ἐγὼ (of me) ἐν (in) τῷ (-) ἐπανέρχεσθαί (returning) με (I) ἀποδώσω (will repay) σοι (you).

41  Ἀποκριθεὶς (Answering) δὲ (now) εἶπεν (said) αὐτῇ (to her) (the) Κύριος (Lord)· Μάρθα (Martha) Μάρθα (Martha), μεριμνᾷς (you are anxious) καὶ (and) θορυβάζῃ (troubled) περὶ (about) πολλά (many things), 42  ὀλίγων (little) δέ (however) ἐστιν (is) χρεία (necessary) (or) ἑνός (one thing)· Μαριὰμ (Mary) γὰρ (for) τὴν (the) ἀγαθὴν (good) μερίδα (portion) ἐξελέξατο (chose), ἥτις (which) οὐκ (not) ἀφαιρεθήσεται (will be taken away from) αὐτῆς (her).
