Berean Strong's Lexicon
Leuités: Levite

Original Word: Λευίτης
Part of Speech: Noun, Masculine
Transliteration: Leuités
Pronunciation: lay-oo-ee'-tace
Phonetic Spelling: (lyoo-ee'-tace)
Definition: Levite
Meaning: a Levite, properly a man of the tribe of Levi; hence: a priest's assistant, an under priest, as the members of that tribe were charged with this duty.

Word Origin: Derived from Λευί (Leui), which is the Greek form of Levi, the third son of Jacob and Leah.

Corresponding Greek / Hebrew Entries: - H3881 (לֵוִי): Levi

- H3878 (לֵוִי): Levi (as a personal name)

Usage: The term "Leuités" refers to a member of the tribe of Levi, one of the twelve tribes of Israel. In the New Testament, it is used to denote individuals who are descendants of Levi and who often served specific religious roles, particularly in the context of the Temple in Jerusalem.

Cultural and Historical Background: The Levites held a unique position among the tribes of Israel. They were set apart for religious duties and were not given a territorial inheritance like the other tribes. Instead, they were distributed among the other tribes and supported through tithes and offerings. The Levites were responsible for the care of the Tabernacle (and later the Temple), and they assisted the priests, who were also from the tribe of Levi but specifically descended from Aaron. This distinction is crucial in understanding their role in Israelite society and worship.

a. one of Levi's posterity.

b. in a norrower sense those were called Levites (Hebrew לֵוִי בְּנֵי, לְוִיִּים) who, not being of the race of Aaron for whom alone the priesthood was reserved, served as assistants of the priests. It was their duty to keep the sacred utensils and the temple clean, to provide the sacred loaves, to open and shut the gates of the temple, to sing sacred hymns in the temple, and do many other things; so Luke 10:32; John 1:19; Acts 4:36; ((Plutarch, quaest. conv. 1. iv. quaest. 6, 5; Philo de vit.
