A Greeting from Peter
(1 Peter 1:1–2)
1 Συμεὼν (Simeon) Πέτρος (Peter) δοῦλος (a servant) καὶ (and) ἀπόστολος (apostle) Ἰησοῦ (of Jesus) Χριστοῦ (Christ)
Τοῖς (To those) ἰσότιμον (equally precious) ἡμῖν (with ours) λαχοῦσιν (having obtained) πίστιν (a faith) ἐν (through) δικαιοσύνῃ (the righteousness) τοῦ (of the) Θεοῦ (God) ἡμῶν (of us) καὶ (and) Σωτῆρος (Savior) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus) Χριστοῦ (Christ)·
2 Χάρις (Grace) ὑμῖν (to you⁺) καὶ (and) εἰρήνη (peace) πληθυνθείη (be multiplied) ἐν (in) ἐπιγνώσει (the knowledge) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) καὶ (and) Ἰησοῦ (of Jesus) τοῦ (the) Κυρίου (Lord) ἡμῶν (of us).
Partakers of the Divine Nature
3 Ὡς (Accordingly) τὰ (-) πάντα (all things) ἡμῖν (to us) τῆς (the) θείας (divine) δυνάμεως (power) αὐτοῦ (of Him) τὰ (-) πρὸς (toward) ζωὴν (life) καὶ (and) εὐσέβειαν (godliness) δεδωρημένης (has given) διὰ (through) τῆς (the) ἐπιγνώσεως (knowledge) τοῦ (of the One) καλέσαντος (having called) ἡμᾶς (us) ἰδίᾳ (by His own) δόξῃ (glory) καὶ (and) ἀρετῇ (excellence),
4 δι’ (through) ὧν (which) τὰ (the) τίμια (precious) καὶ (and) μέγιστα (magnificent) ἡμῖν (to us) ἐπαγγέλματα (promises) δεδώρηται (He has given), ἵνα (so that) διὰ (through) τούτων (these) γένησθε (you⁺ might become) θείας (of the divine) κοινωνοὶ (partakers) φύσεως (nature), ἀποφυγόντες (having escaped from) τῆς (the) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) κόσμῳ (world) ἐν (in) ἐπιθυμίᾳ (evil desire) φθορᾶς (corruption).
5 Καὶ (Also) αὐτὸ (very reason) τοῦτο (for this) δὲ (now) σπουδὴν (diligence) πᾶσαν (all) παρεισενέγκαντες (having brought in) ἐπιχορηγήσατε (supply) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) πίστει (faith) ὑμῶν (of you⁺) τὴν (-) ἀρετήν (virtue), ἐν (in) δὲ (and) τῇ (-) ἀρετῇ (virtue) τὴν (-) γνῶσιν (knowledge),
6 ἐν (in) δὲ (then) τῇ (-) γνώσει (knowledge) τὴν (-) ἐγκράτειαν (self-control), ἐν (in) δὲ (then) τῇ (-) ἐγκρατείᾳ (self-control) τὴν (-) ὑπομονήν (perseverance), ἐν (in) δὲ (then) τῇ (-) ὑπομονῇ (perseverance) τὴν (-) εὐσέβειαν (godliness),
7 ἐν (in) δὲ (then) τῇ (-) εὐσεβείᾳ (godliness) τὴν (-) φιλαδελφίαν (brotherly affection), ἐν (in) δὲ (then) τῇ (-) φιλαδελφίᾳ (brotherly affection) τὴν (-) ἀγάπην (love).
8 ταῦτα (These things) γὰρ (for) ὑμῖν (in you⁺) ὑπάρχοντα (being) καὶ (and) πλεονάζοντα (abounding) οὐκ (neither) ἀργοὺς (idle) οὐδὲ (nor) ἀκάρπους (unfruitful) καθίστησιν (make you) εἰς (in regard to) τὴν (the) τοῦ (of the) Κυρίου (Lord) ἡμῶν (of us) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus) Χριστοῦ (Christ) ἐπίγνωσιν (knowledge)·
9 ᾧ (In whomever) γὰρ (for) μὴ (not) πάρεστιν (are present) ταῦτα (these things), τυφλός (blind) ἐστιν (he is) μυωπάζων (being shortsighted), λήθην (forgetfulness) λαβὼν (having received) τοῦ (of the) καθαρισμοῦ (cleansing) τῶν (from the) πάλαι (former) αὐτοῦ (of him) ἁμαρτιῶν (sins).
10 Διὸ (Therefore) μᾶλλον (rather), ἀδελφοί (brothers), σπουδάσατε (be diligent) βεβαίαν (sure) ὑμῶν (your⁺) τὴν (-) κλῆσιν (calling) καὶ (and) ἐκλογὴν (election) ποιεῖσθαι (to make)· ταῦτα (these things) γὰρ (for) ποιοῦντες (doing) οὐ (no) μὴ (not) πταίσητέ (shall you⁺ stumble) ποτε (at any time).
11 οὕτως (In this way) γὰρ (for) πλουσίως (richly) ἐπιχορηγηθήσεται (will be supplied) ὑμῖν (to you⁺) ἡ (the) εἴσοδος (entrance) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) αἰώνιον (eternal) βασιλείαν (kingdom) τοῦ (of the) Κυρίου (Lord) ἡμῶν (of us) καὶ (and) Σωτῆρος (Savior) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus) Χριστοῦ (Christ).
12 Διὸ (Therefore) μελλήσω (I will be ready) ἀεὶ (always) ὑμᾶς (you⁺) ὑπομιμνῄσκειν (to remind) περὶ (concerning) τούτων (these things), καίπερ (though) εἰδότας (knowing them) καὶ (and) ἐστηριγμένους (having been strengthened) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) παρούσῃ (being present) ἀληθείᾳ (truth).
13 δίκαιον (Right) δὲ (now) ἡγοῦμαι (I esteem it), ἐφ’ (as) ὅσον (long as) εἰμὶ (I am) ἐν (in) τούτῳ (this) τῷ (-) σκηνώματι (tabernacle), διεγείρειν (to stir up) ὑμᾶς (you⁺) ἐν (in) ὑπομνήσει (a reminder),
14 εἰδὼς (knowing) ὅτι (that) ταχινή (soon) ἐστιν (is) ἡ (the) ἀπόθεσις (putting off) τοῦ (of the) σκηνώματός (tabernacle) μου (of me), καθὼς (as) καὶ (also) ὁ (the) Κύριος (Lord) ἡμῶν (of us) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) Χριστὸς (Christ) ἐδήλωσέν (made clear) μοι (to me)·
15 σπουδάσω (I will be diligent) δὲ (now) καὶ (also) ἑκάστοτε (at every time) ἔχειν (to have) ὑμᾶς (for you⁺) μετὰ (after) τὴν (-) ἐμὴν (my) ἔξοδον (departure) τὴν (-) τούτων (these things) μνήμην (a lasting remembrance) ποιεῖσθαι (to make).

16 Οὐ (Not) γὰρ (for) σεσοφισμένοις (cleverly devised) μύθοις (myths) ἐξακολουθήσαντες (having followed after) ἐγνωρίσαμεν (we made known) ὑμῖν (to you⁺) τὴν (the) τοῦ (of the) Κυρίου (Lord) ἡμῶν (of us) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus) Χριστοῦ (Christ) δύναμιν (power) καὶ (and) παρουσίαν (coming), ἀλλ’ (but) ἐπόπται (eyewitnesses) γενηθέντες (having been) τῆς (-) ἐκείνου (of His) μεγαλειότητος (majesty).
17 λαβὼν (Having received) γὰρ (for) παρὰ (from) Θεοῦ (God) Πατρὸς (the Father) τιμὴν (honor) καὶ (and) δόξαν (glory) φωνῆς (a voice) ἐνεχθείσης (was brought) αὐτῷ (to Him) τοιᾶσδε (such as follows) ὑπὸ (by) τῆς (the) μεγαλοπρεποῦς (Majestic) δόξης (Glory)· Ὁ (The) Υἱός (Son) μου (of Me) ὁ (-) ἀγαπητός (beloved) μου (of Me) οὗτός (this) ἐστιν (is), εἰς (in) ὃν (whom) ἐγὼ (I) εὐδόκησα (was well pleased),—
18 καὶ (And) ταύτην (this) τὴν (-) φωνὴν (voice) ἡμεῖς (we) ἠκούσαμεν (heard) ἐξ (out of) οὐρανοῦ (heaven) ἐνεχθεῖσαν (having been brought) σὺν (with) αὐτῷ (Him) ὄντες (being) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) ἁγίῳ (holy) ὄρει (mountain).
19 Καὶ (And) ἔχομεν (we have) βεβαιότερον (more certain) τὸν (the) προφητικὸν (prophetic) λόγον (word), ᾧ (to which) καλῶς (well) ποιεῖτε (you⁺ do) προσέχοντες (taking heed) ὡς (as) λύχνῳ (to a lamp) φαίνοντι (shining) ἐν (in) αὐχμηρῷ (a dark) τόπῳ (place), ἕως (until) οὗ (this) ἡμέρα (day) διαυγάσῃ (shall have dawned) καὶ (and) φωσφόρος (the morning star) ἀνατείλῃ (shall have arisen) ἐν (in) ταῖς (the) καρδίαις (hearts) ὑμῶν (of you⁺)·
20 τοῦτο (this) πρῶτον (first) γινώσκοντες (knowing), ὅτι (that) πᾶσα (every) προφητεία (prophecy) γραφῆς (of Scripture) ἰδίας (of its own) ἐπιλύσεως (interpretation) οὐ (not) γίνεται (is)·
21 οὐ (No) γὰρ (for) θελήματι (by the will) ἀνθρώπου (of man) ἠνέχθη (was brought forth) προφητεία (prophecy) ποτέ (at any time), ἀλλὰ (but) ὑπὸ (by) Πνεύματος (the Spirit) Ἁγίου (Holy) φερόμενοι (being carried) ἐλάλησαν (spoke) ἀπὸ (from) Θεοῦ (God) ἄνθρωποι (men).
