Instructions to Elders
(1 Timothy 3:1–7; Titus 1:5–9)

1 Πρεσβυτέρους (The elders) τοὺς (-) ἐν (among) ὑμῖν (you⁺) παρακαλῶ (I exhort) ὁ (-) συμπρεσβύτερος (a fellow elder) καὶ (and) μάρτυς (a witness) τῶν (of the) τοῦ (-) Χριστοῦ (of Christ) παθημάτων (sufferings), ὁ (-) καὶ (and) τῆς (of the) μελλούσης (being about) ἀποκαλύπτεσθαι (to be revealed) δόξης (glory) κοινωνός (a partaker), 2 ποιμάνατε (Shepherd) τὸ (the) ἐν (among) ὑμῖν (you⁺) ποίμνιον (flock) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), ἐπισκοποῦντες (exercising oversight) μὴ (not) ἀναγκαστῶς (under compulsion) ἀλλὰ (but) ἑκουσίως (willingly) κατὰ (according to) Θεόν (God), μηδὲ (and not) αἰσχροκερδῶς (for shameful gain) ἀλλὰ (but) προθύμως (eagerly), 3 μηδ’ (not) ὡς (as) κατακυριεύοντες (exercising lordship over) τῶν (-) κλήρων (those in your charge) ἀλλὰ (but) τύποι (examples) γινόμενοι (being) τοῦ (to the) ποιμνίου (flock)· 4 καὶ (And) φανερωθέντος (having been made manifest) τοῦ (on the) Ἀρχιποίμενος (Chief Shepherd) κομιεῖσθε (you⁺ will receive) τὸν (the) ἀμαράντινον (unfading) τῆς (-) δόξης (of glory) στέφανον (crown).

Cast Your Cares on Him

5 Ὁμοίως (Likewise), νεώτεροι (younger ones), ὑποτάγητε (be subject) πρεσβυτέροις (to your elders)· πάντες (All) δὲ (now) ἀλλήλοις (to one another) τὴν (-) ταπεινοφροσύνην (humility) ἐγκομβώσασθε (gird on), ὅτι (because)

Ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) ὑπερηφάνοις (the proud) ἀντιτάσσεται (opposes),

ταπεινοῖς (to the humble) δὲ (however) δίδωσιν (He gives) χάριν (grace).

6 Ταπεινώθητε (Humble yourselves) οὖν (therefore) ὑπὸ (under) τὴν (the) κραταιὰν (mighty) χεῖρα (hand) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), ἵνα (so that) ὑμᾶς (you⁺) ὑψώσῃ (He may exalt) ἐν (in) καιρῷ (due time), 7 πᾶσαν (all) τὴν (the) μέριμναν (anxiety) ὑμῶν (of you⁺) ἐπιρίψαντες (having cast) ἐπ’ (on) αὐτόν (Him), ὅτι (because) αὐτῷ (with Him) μέλει (there is care) περὶ (about) ὑμῶν (you⁺).

8 Νήψατε (Be sober-minded), γρηγορήσατε (be alert). ὁ (The) ἀντίδικος (adversary) ὑμῶν (of you⁺) διάβολος (the devil) ὡς (as) λέων (a lion) ὠρυόμενος (roaring) περιπατεῖ (prowls around) ζητῶν (seeking) τινα (whom) καταπιεῖν (to swallow up)· 9 ᾧ (whom) ἀντίστητε (you⁺ should resist) στερεοὶ (firm) τῇ (in the) πίστει (faith), εἰδότες (knowing) τὰ (the) αὐτὰ (same) τῶν (-) παθημάτων (sufferings) τῇ (-) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) κόσμῳ (world) ὑμῶν (in your⁺) ἀδελφότητι (brotherhood) ἐπιτελεῖσθαι (to be experienced).

Benediction and Farewell

10 Ὁ (The) δὲ (now) Θεὸς (God) πάσης (of all) χάριτος (grace), ὁ (the One) καλέσας (having called) ὑμᾶς (you⁺) εἰς (to) τὴν (the) αἰώνιον (eternal) αὐτοῦ (of Him) δόξαν (glory) ἐν (in) Χριστῷ (Christ), ὀλίγον (a little while) παθόντας (having suffered) αὐτὸς (He Himself) καταρτίσει (will complete), στηρίξει (will confirm), σθενώσει (will strengthen), θεμελιώσει (and will establish you). 11 αὐτῷ (To Him be) τὸ (the) κράτος (power) εἰς (to) τοὺς (the) αἰῶνας (ages) τῶν (of the) αἰώνων (ages)· ἀμήν (Amen).

12 Διὰ (Through) Σιλουανοῦ (Silvanus) ὑμῖν (to you⁺) τοῦ (the) πιστοῦ (faithful) ἀδελφοῦ (brother), ὡς (as) λογίζομαι (I reckon him), δι’ (through) ὀλίγων (few words) ἔγραψα (I wrote), παρακαλῶν (exhorting) καὶ (and) ἐπιμαρτυρῶν (testifying) ταύτην (this) εἶναι (to be) ἀληθῆ (the true) χάριν (grace) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), εἰς (in) ἣν (which) στῆτε (you⁺ stand).

13 Ἀσπάζεται (Greets) ὑμᾶς (you⁺) ἡ (she) ἐν (in) Βαβυλῶνι (Babylon) συνεκλεκτὴ (chosen with you) καὶ (and) Μάρκος (Mark) ὁ (the) υἱός (son) μου (of me).

14 Ἀσπάσασθε (Greet) ἀλλήλους (one another) ἐν (with) φιλήματι (a kiss) ἀγάπης (of love).

Εἰρήνη (Peace) ὑμῖν (to you⁺) πᾶσιν (all) τοῖς (who are) ἐν (in) Χριστῷ (Christ).
