Luke 18

The Parable of the Persistent Widow

1  Ἔλεγεν (He was speaking) δὲ (then) παραβολὴν (a parable) αὐτοῖς (to them) πρὸς (about) τὸ (the way) δεῖν (it is necessary) πάντοτε (always) προσεύχεσθαι (to pray) αὐτοὺς (them) καὶ (and) μὴ (not) ἐνκακεῖν (to grow fainthearted), 2  λέγων (saying)· Κριτής (A judge) τις (certain) ἦν (there was) ἔν (in) τινι (a certain) πόλει (city) τὸν (-) Θεὸν (God) μὴ (not) φοβούμενος (fearing) καὶ (and) ἄνθρωπον (man) μὴ (not) ἐντρεπόμενος (respecting). 3  χήρα (A widow) δὲ (then) ἦν (there was) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) πόλει (city) ἐκείνῃ (that), καὶ (and) ἤρχετο (she was coming) πρὸς (to) αὐτὸν (him) λέγουσα (saying)· Ἐκδίκησόν (Avenge) με (me) ἀπὸ (from) τοῦ (the) ἀντιδίκου (adversary) μου (of me).

4  Καὶ (And) οὐκ (not) ἤθελεν (he was willing) ἐπὶ (for) χρόνον (a time)· μετὰ (after) δὲ (however) ταῦτα (these things) εἶπεν (he said) ἐν (in) ἑαυτῷ (himself)· Εἰ (If) καὶ (even) τὸν (-) Θεὸν (God) οὐ (not) φοβοῦμαι (I fear) οὐδὲ (nor) ἄνθρωπον (man) ἐντρέπομαι (respect), 5  διά (because) γε (yet) τὸ (-) παρέχειν (causes) μοι (me) κόπον (trouble) τὴν (the) χήραν (widow) ταύτην (this) ἐκδικήσω (I will avenge) αὐτήν (her), ἵνα (so that) μὴ (not) εἰς (to) τέλος (the end) ἐρχομένη (coming) ὑπωπιάζῃ (she exhausts) με (me).

6  Εἶπεν (Said) δὲ (then) (the) Κύριος (Lord)· Ἀκούσατε (Hear) τί (what) (the) κριτὴς (judge) τῆς (-) ἀδικίας (unrighteous) λέγει (says)· 7  (-) δὲ (And) Θεὸς (God) οὐ (no) μὴ (not) ποιήσῃ (shall execute) τὴν (the) ἐκδίκησιν (avenging) τῶν (of the) ἐκλεκτῶν (chosen) αὐτοῦ (of Him) τῶν (the ones) βοώντων (crying out) αὐτῷ (to Him) ἡμέρας (day) καὶ (and) νυκτός (night), καὶ (and) μακροθυμεῖ (be deferring) ἐπ’ (in regard to) αὐτοῖς (them)? 8  λέγω (I say) ὑμῖν (to you⁺) ὅτι (that) ποιήσει (He will execute) τὴν (the) ἐκδίκησιν (avenging) αὐτῶν (of them) ἐν (in) τάχει (quickness). πλὴν (Nevertheless) (the) Υἱὸς (Son) τοῦ (-) ἀνθρώπου (of Man) ἐλθὼν (having come) ἆρα (-) εὑρήσει (will He find) τὴν (the) πίστιν (faith) ἐπὶ (on) τῆς (the) γῆς (earth)?

9  Εἶπεν (He spoke) δὲ (now) καὶ (also) πρός (to) τινας (some) τοὺς (-) πεποιθότας (trusting) ἐφ’ (in) ἑαυτοῖς (themselves) ὅτι (that) εἰσὶν (they are) δίκαιοι (righteous) καὶ (and) ἐξουθενοῦντας (despising) τοὺς (the) λοιποὺς (others) τὴν (the) παραβολὴν (parable) ταύτην (this). 10  Ἄνθρωποι (Men) δύο (two) ἀνέβησαν (went up) εἰς (into) τὸ (the) ἱερὸν (temple) προσεύξασθαι (to pray), (the) εἷς (one) Φαρισαῖος (a Pharisee) καὶ (and) (the) ἕτερος (other) τελώνης (a tax collector). 11  (The) Φαρισαῖος (Pharisee) σταθεὶς (having stood) πρὸς (to) ἑαυτὸν (himself) ταῦτα (thus) προσηύχετο (was praying)· (-) Θεός (God), εὐχαριστῶ (I thank) σοι (You) ὅτι (that) οὐκ (not) εἰμὶ (I am) ὥσπερ (like) οἱ (the) λοιποὶ (rest) τῶν (of the) ἀνθρώπων (men), ἅρπαγες (swindlers), ἄδικοι (unrighteous), μοιχοί (adulterers), (or) καὶ (even) ὡς (like) οὗτος (this) (-) τελώνης (tax collector)· 12  νηστεύω (I fast) δὶς (twice) τοῦ (in the) σαββάτου (week), ἀποδεκατῶ (I tithe) πάντα (all things) ὅσα (as many as) κτῶμαι (I gain).

13  (-) δὲ (But) τελώνης (the tax collector) μακρόθεν (afar off) ἑστὼς (standing) οὐκ (not) ἤθελεν (was willing) οὐδὲ (not even) τοὺς (the) ὀφθαλμοὺς (eyes) ἐπᾶραι (to lift up) εἰς (to) τὸν (-) οὐρανόν (heaven), ἀλλ’ (but) ἔτυπτεν (was striking) τὸ (the) στῆθος (breast) αὐτοῦ (of himself) λέγων (saying)· (-) Θεός (God), ἱλάσθητί (be merciful) μοι (to me) τῷ (the) ἁμαρτωλῷ (sinner). 14  λέγω (I say) ὑμῖν (to you⁺), κατέβη (went down) οὗτος (this one) δεδικαιωμένος (justified) εἰς (to) τὸν (the) οἶκον (house) αὐτοῦ (of him) παρ’ (rather than) ἐκεῖνον (that one)· ὅτι (For) πᾶς (everyone) (-) ὑψῶν (exalting) ἑαυτὸν (himself) ταπεινωθήσεται (will be humbled), (the one) δὲ (however) ταπεινῶν (humbling) ἑαυτὸν (himself) ὑψωθήσεται (will be exalted).

15  Προσέφερον (They were bringing) δὲ (then) αὐτῷ (to Him) καὶ (also) τὰ (the) βρέφη (infants) ἵνα (so that) αὐτῶν (them) ἅπτηται (He might touch)· ἰδόντες (having seen) δὲ (however) οἱ (the) μαθηταὶ (disciples) ἐπετίμων (were rebuking) αὐτοῖς (them).

16  (-) δὲ (But) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) προσεκαλέσατο (summoned) αὐτὰ (them) λέγων (saying)· Ἄφετε (Permit) τὰ (the) παιδία (little children) ἔρχεσθαι (to come) πρός (to) με (Me) καὶ (and) μὴ (not) κωλύετε (forbid) αὐτά (them)· τῶν (of the) γὰρ (for) τοιούτων (such) ἐστὶν (is) (the) βασιλεία (kingdom) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God). 17  ἀμὴν (Truly) λέγω (I say) ὑμῖν (to you⁺), ὃς (whoever) ἂν (-) μὴ (not) δέξηται (shall receive) τὴν (the) βασιλείαν (kingdom) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) ὡς (as) παιδίον (a little child), οὐ (no) μὴ (not) εἰσέλθῃ (shall enter) εἰς (into) αὐτήν (it).

18  Καὶ (And) ἐπηρώτησέν (asked) τις (a certain) αὐτὸν (Him) ἄρχων (ruler) λέγων (saying)· Διδάσκαλε (Teacher) ἀγαθέ (good), τί (what) ποιήσας (having done) ζωὴν (life) αἰώνιον (eternal) κληρονομήσω (will I inherit)?

19  Εἶπεν (Said) δὲ (then) αὐτῷ (to him) (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus)· Τί (Why) με (Me) λέγεις (do you call) ἀγαθόν (good)? οὐδεὶς (No one is) ἀγαθὸς (good) εἰ (if) μὴ (not) εἷς (alone) (-) Θεός (God). 20  τὰς (The) ἐντολὰς (commandments) οἶδας (You know)· Μὴ (Not) μοιχεύσῃς (shall you commit adultery), Μὴ (not) φονεύσῃς (shall you murder), Μὴ (not) κλέψῃς (shall you steal), Μὴ (not) ψευδομαρτυρήσῃς (shall you bear false witness), Τίμα (honor) τὸν (the) πατέρα (father) σου (of you) καὶ (and) τὴν (the) μητέρα (mother).

21  (-) δὲ (And) εἶπεν (he said)· Ταῦτα (These) πάντα (all) ἐφύλαξα (I kept) ἐκ (from) νεότητος (the youth) μου (of me).

22  Ἀκούσας (Having heard) δὲ (then) (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) εἶπεν (said) αὐτῷ (to him)· Ἔτι (Still) ἕν (one thing) σοι (to you) λείπει (is lacking)· πάντα (All) ὅσα (as much as) ἔχεις (you have) πώλησον (sell) καὶ (and) διάδος (distribute) πτωχοῖς (to the poor), καὶ (and) ἕξεις (you will have) θησαυρὸν (treasure) ἐν (in) τοῖς (the) οὐρανοῖς (heavens), καὶ (and) δεῦρο (come) ἀκολούθει (follow) μοι (Me).

23  (-) δὲ (But) ἀκούσας (having heard) ταῦτα (these things) περίλυπος (very sorrowful) ἐγενήθη (he became), ἦν (he was) γὰρ (for) πλούσιος (rich) σφόδρα (exceedingly).

24  Ἰδὼν (Having seen) δὲ (then) αὐτὸν (him) (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) περίλυπον (sorrowful) γενόμενον (having become) εἶπεν (said)· Πῶς (How) δυσκόλως (difficultly) οἱ (those) τὰ (-) χρήματα (riches) ἔχοντες (having) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) βασιλείαν (kingdom) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) εἰσπορεύονται (enter)· 25  εὐκοπώτερον (Easier) γάρ (for) ἐστιν (it is) κάμηλον (for a camel) διὰ (through) τρήματος (the eye) βελόνης (of a needle) εἰσελθεῖν (to enter) (than for) πλούσιον (a rich man) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) βασιλείαν (kingdom) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) εἰσελθεῖν (to enter).

26  Εἶπαν (Said) δὲ (then) οἱ (those) ἀκούσαντες (having heard)· Καὶ (And) τίς (who) δύναται (is able) σωθῆναι (to be saved)?

27  (-) δὲ (And) εἶπεν (He said)· Τὰ (The things) ἀδύνατα (impossible) παρὰ (with) ἀνθρώποις (men) δυνατὰ (possible) παρὰ (with) τῷ (-) Θεῷ (God) ἐστιν (are).

28  Εἶπεν (Said) δὲ (then) (-) Πέτρος (Peter)· Ἰδοὺ (Behold) ἡμεῖς (we) ἀφέντες (having left) τὰ (the) ἴδια (own) ἠκολουθήσαμέν (followed) σοι (You).

29  (-) δὲ (And) εἶπεν (He said) αὐτοῖς (to them)· Ἀμὴν (Truly) λέγω (I say) ὑμῖν (to you⁺) ὅτι (that) οὐδείς (no one) ἐστιν (there is) ὃς (who) ἀφῆκεν (left) οἰκίαν (house) (or) γυναῖκα (wife) (or) ἀδελφοὺς (brothers) (or) γονεῖς (parents) (or) τέκνα (children) ἕνεκεν (for the sake of) τῆς (the) βασιλείας (kingdom) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), 30  ὃς (who) οὐχὶ (no) μὴ (not) ἀπολάβῃ (shall receive back) πολλαπλασίονα (manifold more) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) καιρῷ (time) τούτῳ (this) καὶ (and) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) αἰῶνι (age) τῷ (that) ἐρχομένῳ (is coming) ζωὴν (life) αἰώνιον (eternal).

34  Καὶ (And) αὐτοὶ (they) οὐδὲν (none) τούτων (of these things) συνῆκαν (understood), καὶ (and) ἦν (was) τὸ (the) ῥῆμα (saying) τοῦτο (this) κεκρυμμένον (hidden) ἀπ’ (from) αὐτῶν (them), καὶ (and) οὐκ (not) ἐγίνωσκον (they knew) τὰ (the things) λεγόμενα (being spoken).

40  Σταθεὶς (Having stood) δὲ (then) (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) ἐκέλευσεν (commanded) αὐτὸν (him) ἀχθῆναι (to be brought) πρὸς (to) αὐτόν (Him). ἐγγίσαντος (On the having drawn near) δὲ (then) αὐτοῦ (of him) ἐπηρώτησεν (He questioned) αὐτόν (him)· 41  Τί (What) σοι (for you) θέλεις (do you desire that) ποιήσω (I may do)?
