Luke 17

Temptations and Trespasses
(Matthew 18:6–9; Mark 9:42–48)

1  Εἶπεν (He said) δὲ (then) πρὸς (to) τοὺς (the) μαθητὰς (disciples) αὐτοῦ (of Him)· Ἀνένδεκτόν (Impossible) ἐστιν (it is) τοῦ (for) τὰ (the) σκάνδαλα (stumbling blocks) μὴ (not) ἐλθεῖν (to come), πλὴν (but) οὐαὶ (woe to him) δι’ (through) οὗ (whom) ἔρχεται (they come)· 2  λυσιτελεῖ (It is better) αὐτῷ (for him) εἰ (if) λίθος (a stone) μυλικὸς (of a mill) περίκειται (is put) περὶ (around) τὸν (the) τράχηλον (neck) αὐτοῦ (of him) καὶ (and) ἔρριπται (he is thrown) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) θάλασσαν (sea), (than) ἵνα (that) σκανδαλίσῃ (he might cause to stumble) τῶν (-) μικρῶν (little ones) τούτων (of these) ἕνα (one).

3  Προσέχετε (Take heed) ἑαυτοῖς (to yourselves). ἐὰν (If) ἁμάρτῃ (should sin) (the) ἀδελφός (brother) σου (of you), ἐπιτίμησον (rebuke) αὐτῷ (him), καὶ (and) ἐὰν (if) μετανοήσῃ (he should repent), ἄφες (forgive) αὐτῷ (him). 4  καὶ (And) ἐὰν (if) ἑπτάκις (seven times) τῆς (in the) ἡμέρας (day) ἁμαρτήσῃ (he should sin) εἰς (against) σὲ (you) καὶ (and) ἑπτάκις (seven times) ἐπιστρέψῃ (he should return) πρὸς (to) σὲ (you) λέγων (saying)· Μετανοῶ (I repent), ἀφήσεις (you shall forgive) αὐτῷ (him).

The Power of Faith
(Matthew 17:19–20)

5  Καὶ (And) εἶπαν (said) οἱ (the) ἀπόστολοι (apostles) τῷ (to the) Κυρίῳ (Lord)· Πρόσθες (Add to) ἡμῖν (our) πίστιν (faith).

6  Εἶπεν (Said) δὲ (then) (the) Κύριος (Lord)· Εἰ (If) ἔχετε (you⁺ have) πίστιν (faith) ὡς (as) κόκκον (a grain) σινάπεως (of mustard), ἐλέγετε (you⁺ would have said) ἂν (-) τῇ (to the) συκαμίνῳ (mulberry tree) ταύτῃ (this)· Ἐκριζώθητι (Be uprooted) καὶ (and) φυτεύθητι (be planted) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) θαλάσσῃ (sea)· καὶ (and) ὑπήκουσεν (it would have obeyed) ἂν (-) ὑμῖν (you⁺).

7  Τίς (Which) δὲ (now) ἐξ (of) ὑμῶν (you⁺) δοῦλον (a servant) ἔχων (having) ἀροτριῶντα (plowing) (or) ποιμαίνοντα (shepherding), ὃς (the one) εἰσελθόντι (having come in) ἐκ (out of) τοῦ (the) ἀγροῦ (field) ἐρεῖ (will say) αὐτῷ (to him)· Εὐθέως (Immediately) παρελθὼν (having come) ἀνάπεσε (recline), 8  ἀλλ’ (But) οὐχὶ (not) ἐρεῖ (will he say) αὐτῷ (to him)· Ἑτοίμασον (Prepare) τί (what) δειπνήσω (I may eat), καὶ (and) περιζωσάμενος (having girded yourself about) διακόνει (serve) μοι (me) ἕως (while) φάγω (I eat) καὶ (and) πίω (drink), καὶ (and) μετὰ (after) ταῦτα (these things) φάγεσαι (will eat) καὶ (and) πίεσαι (drink) σύ (you)? 9  μὴ (Not) ἔχει (he has) χάριν (favor) τῷ (to the) δούλῳ (servant) ὅτι (because) ἐποίησεν (he did) τὰ (the things) διαταχθέντα (having been directed)? 10  οὕτως (Thus) καὶ (also) ὑμεῖς (you⁺), ὅταν (when) ποιήσητε (you⁺ may have done) πάντα (all) τὰ (the things) διαταχθέντα (having been directed) ὑμῖν (you⁺), λέγετε (say) ὅτι (-) Δοῦλοι (Servants) ἀχρεῖοί (unworthy) ἐσμεν (are we), (that which) ὠφείλομεν (we were obligated) ποιῆσαι (to do) πεποιήκαμεν (we have done).

The Ten Lepers
(2 Kings 5:1–14)

11  Καὶ (And) ἐγένετο (it came to pass) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) πορεύεσθαι (going) εἰς (to) Ἰερουσαλὴμ (Jerusalem), καὶ (that) αὐτὸς (He) διήρχετο (was passing) διὰ (through) μέσον (the midst) Σαμαρείας (of Samaria) καὶ (and) Γαλιλαίας (Galilee). 12  καὶ (And) εἰσερχομένου (on the entering) αὐτοῦ (of Him) εἴς (into) τινα (a certain) κώμην (village) ἀπήντησαν (met) αὐτῷ (Him) δέκα (ten) λεπροὶ (leprous) ἄνδρες (men), οἳ (who) ἔστησαν (stood) πόρρωθεν (afar off), 13  καὶ (And) αὐτοὶ (they) ἦραν (lifted up) φωνὴν (their voice) λέγοντες (saying)· Ἰησοῦ (Jesus) Ἐπιστάτα (Master), ἐλέησον (have mercy on) ἡμᾶς (us).

14  Καὶ (And) ἰδὼν (having seen) εἶπεν (He said) αὐτοῖς (to them)· Πορευθέντες (Having gone) ἐπιδείξατε (show) ἑαυτοὺς (yourselves) τοῖς (to the) ἱερεῦσιν (priests). καὶ (And) ἐγένετο (it came to pass) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) ὑπάγειν (going) αὐτοὺς (of them) ἐκαθαρίσθησαν (that they were cleansed).

15  Εἷς (One) δὲ (then) ἐξ (of) αὐτῶν (them), ἰδὼν (having seen) ὅτι (that) ἰάθη (he was healed), ὑπέστρεψεν (turned back) μετὰ (with) φωνῆς (a voice) μεγάλης (loud) δοξάζων (glorifying) τὸν (-) Θεόν (God), 16  καὶ (and) ἔπεσεν (he fell) ἐπὶ (on) πρόσωπον (his face) παρὰ (at) τοὺς (the) πόδας (feet) αὐτοῦ (of Him) εὐχαριστῶν (giving thanks) αὐτῷ (to Him)· καὶ (and) αὐτὸς (he) ἦν (was) Σαμαρίτης (a Samaritan).

17  Ἀποκριθεὶς (Having answered) δὲ (then) (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) εἶπεν (said)· Οὐχὶ (Not) οἱ (the) δέκα (ten) ἐκαθαρίσθησαν (were cleansed)? οἱ (-) δὲ (But) ἐννέα (the nine) ποῦ (are where)? 18  οὐχ (None) εὑρέθησαν (was there found) ὑποστρέψαντες (having returned) δοῦναι (to give) δόξαν (glory) τῷ (-) Θεῷ (to God) εἰ (if) μὴ (not) (the) ἀλλογενὴς (foreigner) οὗτος (this)?

19  καὶ (And) εἶπεν (He said) αὐτῷ (to him)· Ἀναστὰς (Having risen up) πορεύου (go)· (the) πίστις (faith) σου (of you) σέσωκέν (has saved) σε (you).

The Coming of the Kingdom
(Genesis 19:24–29)

20  Ἐπερωτηθεὶς (Having been questioned) δὲ (now) ὑπὸ (by) τῶν (the) Φαρισαίων (Pharisees) πότε (when) ἔρχεται (is coming) (the) βασιλεία (kingdom) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), ἀπεκρίθη (He answered) αὐτοῖς (them) καὶ (and) εἶπεν (said)· Οὐκ (Not) ἔρχεται (comes) (the) βασιλεία (kingdom) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) μετὰ (with) παρατηρήσεως (observation), 21  οὐδὲ (nor) ἐροῦσιν (will they say)· Ἰδοὺ (Behold) ὧδε (here) (or)· Ἐκεῖ (There)· ἰδοὺ (Behold) γὰρ (for) (the) βασιλεία (kingdom) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) ἐντὸς (in the midst) ὑμῶν (of you⁺) ἐστιν (is).

22  Εἶπεν (He said) δὲ (then) πρὸς (to) τοὺς (the) μαθητάς (disciples)· Ἐλεύσονται (Will come) ἡμέραι (the days) ὅτε (when) ἐπιθυμήσετε (you⁺ will desire) μίαν (one) τῶν (of the) ἡμερῶν (days) τοῦ (of the) Υἱοῦ (Son) τοῦ (-) ἀνθρώπου (of Man) ἰδεῖν (to see) καὶ (and) οὐκ (not) ὄψεσθε (you⁺ will see it). 23  καὶ (And) ἐροῦσιν (they will say) ὑμῖν (to you⁺)· Ἰδοὺ (Behold) ἐκεῖ (there), (or)· Ἰδοὺ (Behold) ὧδε (here)· μὴ (Not) ἀπέλθητε (should you⁺ go away) μηδὲ (nor) διώξητε (should you⁺ pursue). 24  ὥσπερ (Just as) γὰρ (for) (the) ἀστραπὴ (lightning) ἀστράπτουσα (flashing) ἐκ (from) τῆς (the one end) ὑπὸ (of) τὸν (the) οὐρανὸν (sky) εἰς (to) τὴν (the other end) ὑπ’ (of the) οὐρανὸν (sky) λάμπει (shines), οὕτως (so) ἔσται (will be) (the) Υἱὸς (Son) τοῦ (-) ἀνθρώπου (of Man) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) ἡμέρᾳ (day) αὐτοῦ (of Him). 25  πρῶτον (First) δὲ (however) δεῖ (it behooves) αὐτὸν (Him) πολλὰ (many things) παθεῖν (to suffer) καὶ (and) ἀποδοκιμασθῆναι (to be rejected) ἀπὸ (by) τῆς (the) γενεᾶς (generation) ταύτης (this).

26  Καὶ (And) καθὼς (just as) ἐγένετο (it came to pass) ἐν (in) ταῖς (the) ἡμέραις (days) Νῶε (of Noah), οὕτως (so) ἔσται (will it be) καὶ (also) ἐν (in) ταῖς (the) ἡμέραις (days) τοῦ (of the) Υἱοῦ (Son) τοῦ (of) ἀνθρώπου (man)· 27  ἤσθιον (They were eating), ἔπινον (they were drinking), ἐγάμουν (they were marrying), ἐγαμίζοντο (they were being given in marriage), ἄχρι (until) ἧς (that) ἡμέρας (day) εἰσῆλθεν (entered) Νῶε (Noah) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) κιβωτόν (ark), καὶ (and) ἦλθεν (came) (the) κατακλυσμὸς (flood) καὶ (and) ἀπώλεσεν (destroyed) πάντας (them all).

28  Ὁμοίως (Likewise) καθὼς (just as) ἐγένετο (it came to pass) ἐν (in) ταῖς (the) ἡμέραις (days) Λώτ (of Lot)· ἤσθιον (They were eating), ἔπινον (they were drinking), ἠγόραζον (they were buying), ἐπώλουν (they were selling), ἐφύτευον (they were planting), ᾠκοδόμουν (they were building)· 29  (in that) δὲ (then) ἡμέρᾳ (day) ἐξῆλθεν (went out) Λὼτ (Lot) ἀπὸ (from) Σοδόμων (Sodom), ἔβρεξεν (it rained) πῦρ (fire) καὶ (and) θεῖον (sulfur) ἀπ’ (from) οὐρανοῦ (heaven) καὶ (and) ἀπώλεσεν (destroyed) πάντας (all).

30  Κατὰ (According to) τὰ (the) αὐτὰ (same things) ἔσται (it will be) (in that) ἡμέρᾳ (day) (the) Υἱὸς (Son) τοῦ (-) ἀνθρώπου (of Man) ἀποκαλύπτεται (is revealed). 31  ἐν (In) ἐκείνῃ (that) τῇ (-) ἡμέρᾳ (day) ὃς (the one who) ἔσται (will be) ἐπὶ (on) τοῦ (the) δώματος (housetop) καὶ (and) τὰ (the) σκεύη (goods) αὐτοῦ (of him) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) οἰκίᾳ (house), μὴ (not) καταβάτω (let him come down) ἆραι (to take away) αὐτά (them), καὶ (and) (the one) ἐν (in) ἀγρῷ (the field) ὁμοίως (likewise) μὴ (not) ἐπιστρεψάτω (let him return) εἰς (to) τὰ (the things) ὀπίσω (behind). 32  μνημονεύετε (Remember) τῆς (the) γυναικὸς (wife) Λώτ (of Lot). 33  ὃς (Whoever) ἐὰν (if) ζητήσῃ (may seek) τὴν (the) ψυχὴν (life) αὐτοῦ (of him) περιποιήσασθαι (to keep), ἀπολέσει (will lose) αὐτήν (it), ὃς (whoever) δ’ (however) ἂν (-) ἀπολέσῃ (may lose it), ζωογονήσει (will preserve) αὐτήν (it). 34  λέγω (I say) ὑμῖν (to you⁺), ταύτῃ (in that) τῇ (-) νυκτὶ (night) ἔσονται (there will be) δύο (two) ἐπὶ (upon) κλίνης (bed) μιᾶς (one), (The) εἷς (one) παραλημφθήσεται (will be taken) καὶ (and) (the) ἕτερος (other) ἀφεθήσεται (will be left)· 35  ἔσονται (There will be) δύο (two women) ἀλήθουσαι (grinding) ἐπὶ (at) τὸ (the) αὐτό (same place), (The) μία (one) παραλημφθήσεται (will be taken) (-) δὲ (and) ἑτέρα (the other) ἀφεθήσεται (will be left).

37  Καὶ (And) ἀποκριθέντες (answering) λέγουσιν (they say) αὐτῷ (to Him)· Ποῦ (Where), Κύριε (Lord)?

(-) δὲ (And) εἶπεν (He said) αὐτοῖς (to them)· Ὅπου (Where) τὸ (the) σῶμα (body is), ἐκεῖ (there) καὶ (also) οἱ (the) ἀετοὶ (vultures) ἐπισυναχθήσονται (will be gathered together).
