Teachings about Divorce
(Mark 10:1–12)

1  Καὶ (And) ἐγένετο (it came to pass) ὅτε (when) ἐτέλεσεν (finished) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) τοὺς (the) λόγους (words) τούτους (these), μετῆρεν (that He withdrew) ἀπὸ (from) τῆς (-) Γαλιλαίας (Galilee) καὶ (and) ἦλθεν (came) εἰς (into) τὰ (the) ὅρια (borders) τῆς (-) Ἰουδαίας (of Judea) πέραν (beyond) τοῦ (the) Ἰορδάνου (Jordan). 2  καὶ (And) ἠκολούθησαν (followed) αὐτῷ (Him) ὄχλοι (crowds) πολλοί (many), καὶ (and) ἐθεράπευσεν (He healed) αὐτοὺς (them) ἐκεῖ (there).

3  Καὶ (And) προσῆλθον (came) αὐτῷ (to Him) Φαρισαῖοι (Pharisees) πειράζοντες (testing) αὐτὸν (Him) καὶ (and) λέγοντες (saying)· Εἰ (If) ἔξεστιν (is it lawful) ἀνθρώπῳ (for a man) ἀπολῦσαι (to send away) τὴν (the) γυναῖκα (wife) αὐτοῦ (of him) κατὰ (for) πᾶσαν (any) αἰτίαν (cause)?

4  Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) ἀποκριθεὶς (answering) εἶπεν (He said)· Οὐκ (Not) ἀνέγνωτε (did you⁺ read) ὅτι (that) ὁ (the One) κτίσας (having created) ἀπ’ (from) ἀρχῆς (the beginning)· Ἄρσεν (male) καὶ (and) θῆλυ (female) ἐποίησεν (made) αὐτοὺς (them) 5  καὶ (and) εἶπεν (He said)· Ἕνεκα (On account of) τούτου (this) καταλείψει (will leave) ἄνθρωπος (a man) τὸν (the) πατέρα (father) καὶ (and) τὴν (the) μητέρα (mother) καὶ (and) κολληθήσεται (be joined with) τῇ (the) γυναικὶ (wife) αὐτοῦ (of him), καὶ (and) ἔσονται (will be) οἱ (the) δύο (two) εἰς (for) σάρκα (flesh) μίαν (one)? 6  ὥστε (So) οὐκέτι (no longer) εἰσὶν (are they) δύο (two) ἀλλὰ (but) σὰρξ (flesh) μία (one). ὃ (What) οὖν (therefore) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) συνέζευξεν (yoked together), ἄνθρωπος (man) μὴ (not) χωριζέτω (let separate).

7  Λέγουσιν (They say) αὐτῷ (to Him)· Τί (Why) οὖν (then) Μωϋσῆς (Moses) ἐνετείλατο (commanded) δοῦναι (to give her) βιβλίον (a roll) ἀποστασίου (of divorce) καὶ (and) ἀπολῦσαι (to send away) αὐτήν (her)?

8  Λέγει (He says) αὐτοῖς (to them) Ὅτι (-)· Μωϋσῆς (Moses) πρὸς (for) τὴν (the) σκληροκαρδίαν (hardness of heart) ὑμῶν (of you⁺) ἐπέτρεψεν (allowed) ὑμῖν (you⁺) ἀπολῦσαι (to divorce) τὰς (the) γυναῖκας (wives) ὑμῶν (of you⁺)· ἀπ’ (from the) ἀρχῆς (beginning) δὲ (however) οὐ (not) γέγονεν (it has been) οὕτως (this way). 9  λέγω (I say) δὲ (now) ὑμῖν (to you⁺) ὅτι (that) ὃς (whoever) ἂν (-) ἀπολύσῃ (shall send away) τὴν (the) γυναῖκα (wife) αὐτοῦ (of him) μὴ (except) ἐπὶ (for) πορνείᾳ (sexual immorality) καὶ (and) γαμήσῃ (shall marry) ἄλλην (another), μοιχᾶται (he commits adultery).

10  Λέγουσιν (Say) αὐτῷ (to Him) οἱ (the) μαθηταί (disciples) αὐτοῦ (of Him)· Εἰ (If) οὕτως (this) ἐστὶν (is) ἡ (the) αἰτία (case) τοῦ (of the) ἀνθρώπου (man) μετὰ (with) τῆς (the) γυναικός (wife), οὐ (not) συμφέρει (it is better) γαμῆσαι (to marry).

11  Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) εἶπεν (He said) αὐτοῖς (to them)· Οὐ (Not) πάντες (all) χωροῦσιν (receive) τὸν (the) λόγον (word) τοῦτον (this) ἀλλ’ (but) οἷς (those to whom) δέδοται (it has been given). 12  εἰσὶν (There are) γὰρ (for) εὐνοῦχοι (eunuchs) οἵτινες (who) ἐκ (from) κοιλίας (the womb) μητρὸς (of their mother) ἐγεννήθησαν (were born) οὕτως (thus), καὶ (and) εἰσὶν (there are) εὐνοῦχοι (eunuchs) οἵτινες (who) εὐνουχίσθησαν (were made eunuchs) ὑπὸ (by) τῶν (-) ἀνθρώπων (men), καὶ (and) εἰσὶν (there are) εὐνοῦχοι (eunuchs) οἵτινες (who) εὐνούχισαν (made eunuchs of) ἑαυτοὺς (themselves) διὰ (for the sake of) τὴν (the) βασιλείαν (kingdom) τῶν (of the) οὐρανῶν (heavens). ὁ (The one) δυνάμενος (being able) χωρεῖν (to receive it) χωρείτω (let him receive it).

Jesus Blesses the Children

13  Τότε (Then) προσηνέχθησαν (were brought) αὐτῷ (to Him) παιδία (little children), ἵνα (so that) τὰς (the) χεῖρας (hands) ἐπιθῇ (He might lay) αὐτοῖς (on them) καὶ (and) προσεύξηται (He might pray)· οἱ (-) δὲ (but) μαθηταὶ (the disciples) ἐπετίμησαν (rebuked) αὐτοῖς (them). 14  ὁ (-) δὲ (But) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) εἶπεν (said)· Ἄφετε (Permit) τὰ (the) παιδία (little children) καὶ (and) μὴ (not) κωλύετε (forbid) αὐτὰ (them) ἐλθεῖν (to come) πρός (to) με (Me)· τῶν (-) γὰρ (for) τοιούτων (unto such) ἐστὶν (is) ἡ (the) βασιλεία (kingdom) τῶν (of the) οὐρανῶν (heavens). 15  καὶ (And) ἐπιθεὶς (having laid) τὰς (the) χεῖρας (hands) αὐτοῖς (on them) ἐπορεύθη (He went) ἐκεῖθεν (from there).

The Rich Young Man
(Mark 10:17–31; Luke 18:18–30)

16  Καὶ (And) ἰδοὺ (behold) εἷς (one) προσελθὼν (having come) αὐτῷ (to Him) εἶπεν (said)· Διδάσκαλε (Teacher), τί (what) ἀγαθὸν (good) ποιήσω (shall I do) ἵνα (so that) σχῶ (I shall have) ζωὴν (life) αἰώνιον (eternal)?

17  Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) εἶπεν (He said) αὐτῷ (to him)· Τί (Why) με (Me) ἐρωτᾷς (do you ask) περὶ (about) τοῦ (the) ἀγαθοῦ (good)? εἷς (One) ἐστιν (is) ὁ (-) ἀγαθός (good)· εἰ (If) δὲ (however) θέλεις (you want) εἰς (into) τὴν (-) ζωὴν (life) εἰσελθεῖν (to enter), τήρησον (keep) τὰς (the) ἐντολάς (commandments).

18  Λέγει (He says) αὐτῷ (to him)· Ποίας (Which)?

Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) εἶπεν (said)· Τὸ (-) Οὐ (Not) φονεύσεις (will you murder), Οὐ (not) μοιχεύσεις (will you commit adultery), Οὐ (not) κλέψεις (will you steal), Οὐ (not) ψευδομαρτυρήσεις (will you bear false witness), 19  Τίμα (honor) τὸν (the) πατέρα (father) καὶ (and) τὴν (the) μητέρα (mother), καὶ (and) Ἀγαπήσεις (you will love) τὸν (the) πλησίον (neighbor) σου (of you) ὡς (as) σεαυτόν (yourself).

20  Λέγει (Says) αὐτῷ (to Him) ὁ (the) νεανίσκος (young man)· Ταῦτα (These) πάντα (all) ἐφύλαξα (I kept)· τί (What) ἔτι (still) ὑστερῶ (do I lack)?

21  Ἔφη (Was saying) αὐτῷ (to him) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus)· Εἰ (If) θέλεις (you want) τέλειος (perfect) εἶναι (to be), ὕπαγε (go) πώλησόν (sell) σου (of you) τὰ (what) ὑπάρχοντα (are possessing) καὶ (and) δὸς (give) τοῖς (to the) πτωχοῖς (poor), καὶ (and) ἕξεις (you will have) θησαυρὸν (treasure) ἐν (in) οὐρανοῖς (the heavens), καὶ (And) δεῦρο (come) ἀκολούθει (follow) μοι (Me).

22  Ἀκούσας (Having heard) δὲ (now) ὁ (the) νεανίσκος (young man) τὸν (the) λόγον (word) τοῦτον (this) ἀπῆλθεν (he went away) λυπούμενος (grieving)· ἦν (he was one) γὰρ (for) ἔχων (having) κτήματα (possessions) πολλά (many).

23  Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) εἶπεν (said) τοῖς (to the) μαθηταῖς (disciples) αὐτοῦ (of Him)· Ἀμὴν (Truly) λέγω (I say) ὑμῖν (to you⁺) ὅτι (that) πλούσιος (a rich man) δυσκόλως (with difficulty) εἰσελεύσεται (will enter) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) βασιλείαν (kingdom) τῶν (of the) οὐρανῶν (heavens). 24  πάλιν (Again) δὲ (now) λέγω (I say) ὑμῖν (to you⁺), εὐκοπώτερόν (easier for) ἐστιν (it is) κάμηλον (a camel) διὰ (through) τρυπήματος (the eye) ῥαφίδος (of a needle) εἰσελθεῖν (to enter) ἢ (than for) πλούσιον (a rich man) εἰσελθεῖν (to enter) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) βασιλείαν (kingdom) τοῦ (of) Θεοῦ (God).

25  Ἀκούσαντες (Having heard) δὲ (now) οἱ (the) μαθηταὶ (disciples) ἐξεπλήσσοντο (were astonished) σφόδρα (exceedingly) λέγοντες (saying)· Τίς (Who) ἄρα (then) δύναται (is able) σωθῆναι (to be saved)?

26  Ἐμβλέψας (Having looked on them) δὲ (now) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) εἶπεν (said) αὐτοῖς (to them)· Παρὰ (With) ἀνθρώποις (men) τοῦτο (this) ἀδύνατόν (impossible) ἐστιν (is), παρὰ (with) δὲ (however) Θεῷ (God) πάντα (all things) δυνατά (are possible).

27  Τότε (Then) ἀποκριθεὶς (answering) ὁ (-) Πέτρος (Peter) εἶπεν (said) αὐτῷ (to Him)· Ἰδοὺ (Behold) ἡμεῖς (we) ἀφήκαμεν (have left) πάντα (all) καὶ (and) ἠκολουθήσαμέν (followed) σοι (You)· τί (what) ἄρα (then) ἔσται (will be) ἡμῖν (unto us)?

28  Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) εἶπεν (said) αὐτοῖς (to them)· Ἀμὴν (Truly) λέγω (I say) ὑμῖν (to you⁺) ὅτι (that) ὑμεῖς (you⁺) οἱ (the ones) ἀκολουθήσαντές (having followed) μοι (Me), ἐν (in) τῇ (the) παλινγενεσίᾳ (regeneration), ὅταν (when) καθίσῃ (shall sit down) ὁ (the) Υἱὸς (Son) τοῦ (-) ἀνθρώπου (of Man) ἐπὶ (upon) θρόνου (the throne) δόξης (of glory) αὐτοῦ (of Him), καθήσεσθε (will sit) καὶ (also) ὑμεῖς (you⁺) ἐπὶ (on) δώδεκα (twelve) θρόνους (thrones) κρίνοντες (judging) τὰς (the) δώδεκα (twelve) φυλὰς (tribes) τοῦ (-) Ἰσραήλ (of Israel). 29  καὶ (And) πᾶς (everyone) ὅστις (who) ἀφῆκεν (has left) οἰκίας (houses) ἢ (or) ἀδελφοὺς (brothers) ἢ (or) ἀδελφὰς (sisters) ἢ (or) πατέρα (father) ἢ (or) μητέρα (mother) ἢ (or) γυναῖκα (wife) ἢ (or) τέκνα (children) ἢ (or) ἀγροὺς (fields) ἕνεκεν (for the sake of) τοῦ (-) μου (My) ὀνόματός (name), ἑκατονταπλασίονα (a hundredfold) λήμψεται (will receive) καὶ (and) ζωὴν (life) αἰώνιον (eternal) κληρονομήσει (will inherit). 30  Πολλοὶ (Many) δὲ (however) ἔσονται (will be) πρῶτοι (first) ἔσχατοι (last) καὶ (and) ἔσχατοι (last) πρῶτοι (first).
