Deuteronomy 32

The Song of Moses

Give ear, O heavens, and I will speak;

Moses calls heaven to witness the words of the song he is about to deliver to Israel. As God’s created realm, the heavens stand as enduring witnesses to the covenant and to Israel’s responsibility before the Lord.

Isa 1:2 Listen, O heavens, and give ear, O earth…
Deu 31:28 Assemble before me all the elders of your tribes…
Deu 4:26 I call heaven and earth as witnesses against you this day…

hear, O earth, the words of my mouth.

The earth is joined with heaven as a witness against Israel if the nation turns from God. The summons gives solemn weight to Moses’ final warning and emphasizes that Israel’s obedience or rebellion would not be hidden from the God who rules over all creation.

Job 37:2 Listen closely to the thunder of His voice…

Let my teaching fall like rain

Moses presents God’s instruction as necessary nourishment for Israel. In a land dependent on seasonal rainfall, rain meant life, harvests, and continued provision. The law given through Moses was to sustain the nation as it entered the land promised to its fathers.

Psa 72:6 May he be like rain that falls on freshly cut grass,…

and my speech settle like dew,

Dew supplied gentle moisture even when rain did not come. Moses’ words were to remain with the people steadily, shaping their daily obedience to the Lord and reminding them of His covenant faithfulness.

like gentle rain on new grass,

Israel stood at the beginning of a new chapter, preparing to cross the Jordan after the wilderness generation had passed away. Like young grass needing careful nourishment, the people needed God’s instruction to establish them in the land and preserve them from the idolatry of its inhabitants.

God’s truth provides what His people need to grow strong and fruitful. As Israel received and obeyed His commands, the nation would be equipped to endure trials, live faithfully in the land, and reflect the character of the Lord among the nations.

Moses declares before Israel the holy name of the covenant God who delivered them from Egypt, sustained them in the wilderness, and bound Himself to their fathers. His name identifies Him as the living and faithful God, supreme over every false god worshiped by the surrounding nations. As Moses prepares to die, he calls the people to remember who the LORD is and what He has done for them.

Ascribe greatness to our God!

Israel is summoned to acknowledge the LORD’s unmatched power, righteousness, faithfulness, and authority. Their worship was to rest on His revealed character and His acts in history, not merely on outward ritual. The God who made heaven and earth had chosen Israel, kept His promises, and deserved their wholehearted allegiance.

His people have acted corruptly toward Him;

Is He not your Father and Creator?

The LORD was Israel’s Father as the One who chose, cared for, disciplined, and preserved the nation. He was also their Creator, the source of their life and identity as His covenant people. Their rebellion was therefore not merely disobedience to a lawgiver but rejection of the One to whom they owed their existence.

God brought Israel from slavery into possession of Canaan, giving the nation security and dominion over a land marked by hills, fortified places, and fertile regions. Israel’s elevation among the nations came from the Lord’s covenant faithfulness, not its own strength.

Then Moses came with Joshua son of Nun

As Moses approached the end of his life, Joshua stood beside him as the leader God had appointed to succeed him. Their appearance together marked the transfer of leadership that would soon take place, while confirming the continuity of God’s purpose for Israel.

Moses delivered the Song of Moses in its entirety as a covenant witness. It proclaimed God’s faithfulness, recalled Israel’s history, warned of coming rebellion and judgment, and held out the certainty of God’s ultimate justice and mercy.

Moses’ Death Foretold

On that same day

After Moses delivered the song of witness and charged Israel to obey the law, the Lord directed him to prepare for his death. Israel was camped east of the Jordan, ready to enter Canaan under Joshua’s leadership.

Deu 31:22-23 So that very day Moses wrote down this song…
Num 27:12-14 Then the LORD said to Moses, “Go up this mountain…

the LORD said to Moses,

God gave Moses his final personal instructions, commanding him to ascend Mount Nebo and view the land promised to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Moses would see Canaan but would not enter it because of his disobedience at Meribah.

Num 27:18-19 And the LORD replied to Moses, “Take Joshua son of Nun,…

“Go up into the Abarim Range

East of the Jordan River, the Abarim Range stood in the land where Israel camped before entering Canaan. God directed Moses there at the close of his leadership.

Num 27:12-14 Then the LORD said to Moses, “Go up this mountain…
Deu 3:27-28 Go to the top of Pisgah and look to the west…

to Mount Nebo,

Mount Nebo, a summit in the range, provided a view westward over the Jordan Valley. From this height Moses would see the land he had led Israel toward throughout the wilderness years.

in the land of Moab

Moab lay east of the Dead Sea and the Jordan River. Israel’s final encampment before crossing into Canaan was located in this region.

The land was God’s gift to Israel, granted according to His covenant promises rather than Israel’s strength or merit.

Israel was to receive Canaan as its inheritance and establish life there under God’s law.

Deu 26:1-2 When you enter the land that the LORD your God…

Moses was to ascend Mount Nebo in Moab, opposite Jericho, where he would view the land God had promised Israel. From its heights, he could see the inheritance toward which he had led the nation for forty years.

Deu 3:27 Go to the top of Pisgah and look to the west…
Num 27:12-14 Then the LORD said to Moses, “Go up this mountain…

you will die and be gathered to your people,

Moses would die and join the faithful generations who had gone before him. Though he would not enter Canaan, God’s covenant purposes would continue through Israel.

Num 27:13 After you have seen it, you too will be gathered…
Gen 25:8 And at a ripe old age he breathed his last and died,…
Gen 35:29 Then he breathed his last and died, and was gathered…

just as your brother Aaron died on Mount Hor

Aaron had died during Israel’s wilderness journey after being denied entry into the land because of disobedience. Like Aaron, Moses would finish his earthly service outside the Promised Land.

Num 20:22-29 After they had set out from Kadesh, the whole congregation…
Num 33:38-39 At the LORD’s command, Aaron the priest climbed Mount Hor…

and was gathered to his people.

The parallel between the brothers shows that neither position nor past faithfulness removed them from God’s discipline. Yet both remained part of the people God had called and preserved.

Num 20:24 Aaron will be gathered to his people; he will not enter…
Gen 49:33 When Jacob had finished instructing his sons,…

For at the waters of Meribah-kadesh in the Wilderness of Zin,

Moses and Aaron sinned during Israel’s journey near Kadesh, when the people complained for water. God commanded Moses to speak to the rock, but Moses struck it twice before the congregation. The place was called Meribah, meaning “quarreling” or “strife,” because Israel quarreled there with the Lord.

Num 20:13 These were the waters of Meribah, where the Israelites…
Num 20:1 In the first month, the whole congregation of Israel entered…

both of you broke faith with Me among the Israelites

Moses and Aaron failed to obey God’s direct command before the people they were appointed to lead. Their disobedience misrepresented God’s authority and did not provide the faithful example required of Israel’s leaders.

Num 20:12 But the LORD said to Moses and Aaron…
Num 20:24 Aaron will be gathered to his people; he will not enter…
Psa 106:32-33 At the waters of Meribah they angered the LORD,…

by failing to treat Me as holy in their presence.

By acting contrary to God’s instruction, Moses and Aaron did not honor Him as holy before the congregation. Because of this sin, neither would bring Israel into the Promised Land.

Lev 10:3 Then Moses said to Aaron, “This is what the LORD meant…
Lev 22:32 You must not profane My holy name. I must be acknowledged…
Ezk 20:41 When I bring you from the peoples and gather you…

Although you shall see from a distance

From Mount Nebo in Moab, east of the Jordan, Moses would look across into Canaan. God graciously allowed him to see the land promised to Israel, though he would not cross into it. The separation reflected the judgment pronounced after Moses failed to honor God at Meribah.

Deu 34:1-4 Then Moses went up from the plains of Moab to Mount Nebo,…
Num 27:12 Then the LORD said to Moses, “Go up this mountain…

the land that I am giving the Israelites,

Canaan was the inheritance God had pledged to Abraham’s descendants. Its possession would demonstrate God’s faithfulness to His covenant and mark the beginning of Israel’s settled life as a nation under His rule.

Jos 1:2-3 Moses My servant is dead. Now therefore arise…
Deu 1:8 See, I have placed the land before you. Enter and possess…

you shall not enter it.”

Moses’ exclusion from the land showed that even Israel’s greatest leader was accountable to God’s command. He would die before Israel entered Canaan under Joshua, pointing beyond Moses’ leadership to the need for the greater deliverance accomplished by Christ.

Deu 3:27 Go to the top of Pisgah and look to the west…
Num 20:12 But the LORD said to Moses and Aaron…
Deu 4:21-22 The LORD, however, was angry with me because of you…
