1 Samuel 25
Berean Study Bible

The Death of Samuel

When Samuel died,

Israel lost the prophet and judge who had guided the nation through the transition from the period of the judges to the monarchy. Samuel had anointed both Saul and David, faithfully declaring God’s will during a decisive generation.

1Sa 28:3 Now by this time Samuel had died, and all Israel…
1Sa 15:35 And to the day of his death, Samuel never again visited Saul…

all Israel gathered to mourn for him;

The nationwide mourning reflected Samuel’s influence among the tribes and the honor he had earned through a lifetime of spiritual and public leadership.

and they buried him at his home in Ramah.

Samuel was buried at Ramah, his hometown and the center of much of his ministry. Burial on family property was a customary mark of honor and continuity within Israel.

1Sa 7:17 Then he would return to Ramah because his home was there…
1Sa 19:18-19 So David ran away and escaped. And he went to Samuel…

Then David set out and went down to the Wilderness of Paran.

With Samuel gone and Saul still pursuing him, David withdrew farther into the wilderness south of Judah. The remote region offered refuge for David and his men as they continued to live as fugitives.

David, Nabal, and Abigail

Now there was a man in Maon

Maon lay in the hill country of Judah, a rugged southern region suited to flocks and herds. Its distance from major centers made it a place where wealthy landowners could maintain extensive pastoral operations.

His wealth rested chiefly in land, animals, and the servants needed to oversee them. Such resources gave him influence in the region and made his household capable of providing generously during times of plenty.

Sheep shearing was a season of harvest, profit, and celebration. With abundant wool being gathered and food prepared for the workers, Nabal’s household was in a position to show hospitality when David’s men came seeking provisions.

While David was in the wilderness,

David and his men were living as fugitives from Saul, moving through the southern wilderness where the rugged terrain offered concealment but little security. Sheep shearing marked the end of a profitable season and was commonly celebrated with a feast. Nabal, whose name means “fool,” was a wealthy landowner near Carmel with large flocks and substantial resources. David’s men had protected Nabal’s shepherds and herds in the wilderness, so David’s request for provisions would have been understood as an appeal for customary generosity during a time of abundance.

“Who is David?

Nabal did not lack information about David. David was widely known as Israel’s successful warrior and as the man Saul had pursued. His words were a deliberate insult toward David and a rejection of his claim.

whose origin I do not know?”

Nabal’s claim was willful disregard. David’s rise, his victory over Goliath, and his conflict with Saul were widely known in Israel. Nabal rejected both David’s rightful request and the debt he owed to David’s men.

So David’s men turned around and went back,

David had sent them to Nabal during sheep-shearing, a season marked by celebration and generosity. Since David’s men had protected Nabal’s shepherds and flocks in the wilderness, they reasonably expected provisions in return. Nabal’s refusal violated customary hospitality and repaid protection with contempt. David’s men nevertheless carried out their assignment and returned without taking matters into their own hands.

They reported Nabal’s response accurately, bringing David face to face with the insult. Their report provoked David’s anger and led him to prepare for judgment against Nabal’s household, setting in motion Abigail’s timely intervention.
