Leviticus 26

Additional Blessings of Obedience

“You must not make idols for yourselves

Israel was not to fashion objects for worship as the nations of Canaan did. Images of gods were central to pagan religion, but the LORD had revealed Himself as the living God who would not be represented or controlled by human craftsmanship.

Lev 19:4 Do not turn to idols or make for yourselves molten gods.…
Exo 20:4 You shall not make for yourself an idol…
Deu 5:8 You shall not make for yourself an idol…

or set up a carved image or sacred pillar;

Carved images and upright pillars commonly marked pagan worship sites. Israel was to reject these practices entirely, preserving worship that honored the LORD alone and kept the nation distinct from the peoples of the land.

Deu 27:15 Cursed is the man who makes a carved idol or molten image—…
Deu 16:22 do not set up for yourselves a sacred pillar…
Exo 23:24 You must not bow down to their gods or serve them…

you must not place a sculpted stone in your land to bow down to it.

No object associated with false worship was to be established anywhere in the land God was giving Israel. Bowing before such a stone would transfer honor and submission owed to the LORD to a created thing.

Exo 20:5 You shall not bow down to them or worship them;…
Isa 44:17 From the rest he makes a god, his graven image.…
Deu 4:19 When you look to the heavens and see the sun and moon…

For I am the LORD your God.

The command rests on God’s covenant claim over Israel. He alone had redeemed them, given them the land, and was worthy of their exclusive obedience.

Exo 20:2 I am the LORD your God, who brought you out…
Deu 5:6 I am the LORD your God, who brought you out…

You must keep My Sabbaths

Israel’s Sabbaths began with God’s rest after creation and marked the nation as belonging to Him. Weekly rest and the appointed sacred days required Israel to cease ordinary labor, gather for worship, and depend on God’s provision. Their observance set Israel apart from surrounding peoples and anticipated the lasting rest secured through Christ.

Exo 31:13-17 Tell the Israelites, ‘Surely you must keep My Sabbaths,…
Exo 20:8-11 Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy.…
Deu 5:12-15 Observe the Sabbath day by keeping it holy,…

and have reverence for My sanctuary.

The tabernacle, and later the temple, was the appointed place of God’s dwelling among His people and the center of sacrifice and worship. Reverence for it required Israel to recognize God’s holiness and approach Him according to His commands. The sanctuary ultimately pointed to Christ, through whom believers are brought into God’s presence.

Lev 10:3 Then Moses said to Aaron, “This is what the LORD meant…
Psa 5:7 But I will enter Your house by the abundance of Your…

I am the LORD.

God grounded these commands in His own covenant authority. He is Israel’s sovereign Redeemer, faithful to His promises and fully worthy of their obedience.

Isa 45:5 I am the LORD, and there is no other; there is no God but Me…

If you follow My statutes

God called Israel to live according to the statutes, the detailed laws He gave at Sinai. These laws governed worship, moral conduct, justice, family life, and community order, setting Israel apart as His holy people. Obedience demonstrated covenant faithfulness and devotion to the God who had redeemed them from Egypt.

Ezk 20:19 I am the LORD your God; walk in My statutes…
Lev 18:4 You are to practice My judgments and keep My statutes…
Psa 119:5 Oh, that my ways were committed to keeping Your statutes!

and carefully keep My commandments,

Israel was to obey with deliberate, faithful attention rather than outward conformity alone. The commands of God defined the terms of covenant blessing and required a wholehearted commitment to His revealed will.

Jhn 14:15 If you love Me, you will keep My commandments.
1Jn 5:3 For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments.…

I will give you rains in their season,

God promised Israel timely rain as a covenant blessing for obedience. In a land dependent on early and latter rains for its crops, regular rainfall meant food, security, and the Lord’s favor after the wilderness journey.

Deu 11:14 then I will provide rain for your land in season,…
Deu 28:12 The LORD will open the heavens, His abundant storehouse,…
Jer 5:24 They have not said in their hearts, ‘Let us fear the LORD…

and the land will yield its produce,

The Promised Land would provide abundantly when Israel walked in obedience. Its harvests would testify that God had fulfilled His promise to give His people a fertile inheritance.

Psa 67:6 The earth has yielded its harvest; God, our God, blesses us.
Deu 8:7-8 For the LORD your God is bringing you into a good land,…
Jol 2:24 The threshing floors will be full of grain…

and the trees of the field will bear their fruit.

Orchards and wild trees alike would flourish, producing food in abundance. This blessing stands opposite the barrenness and crop failure that would accompany Israel’s disobedience.

Ezk 34:27 The trees of the field will give their fruit,…
Jol 2:22 Do not be afraid, O beasts of the field,…
Ezk 47:12 Along both banks of the river, fruit trees…

Your threshing will continue until the grape harvest,

Grain threshing normally ended well before the late-summer grape harvest. An unusually large grain yield would keep the work going for months, showing that the land was producing far beyond ordinary needs.

Amo 9:13 “Behold, the days are coming,” declares the LORD,…
Jol 2:24 The threshing floors will be full of grain…
Hos 2:22 And the earth will respond to the grain,…

and the grape harvest will continue until sowing time;

The vintage would likewise be so abundant that it would occupy the people until the autumn planting season. Israel’s yearly agricultural cycle would be marked by full barns, plentiful wine, and no gap between harvest and sowing.

Gen 8:22 As long as the earth endures, seedtime and harvest…
Gen 26:12 Now Isaac sowed seed in the land, and that very year…
Deu 11:14 then I will provide rain for your land in season,…

you will have your fill of food to eat

God promised more than survival: the people would eat in satisfaction from the produce of their land. Their security would rest on His provision rather than scarcity or famine.

Lev 25:19 Then the land will yield its fruit, so that you can…
Deu 8:10 When you eat and are satisfied, bless the LORD your God…
Psa 132:15 I will bless her with abundant provisions;…

and will dwell securely in your land.

Abundance would be joined with peace. Israel would live safely in the land God gave them, free from the insecurity that came through invasion, drought, or want.

Lev 25:18 You are to keep My statutes and observe My judgments…
Deu 12:10 When you cross the Jordan and live in the land…
Ezk 34:28 They will no longer be prey for the nations…

And I will give peace to the land,

Peace was a covenant blessing for Israel’s obedience, bringing safety, stability, and well-being throughout Canaan. God promised not merely an end to fighting but secure conditions in which His people could live under His favor.

Psa 147:14 He makes peace at your borders; He fills you…
Ezk 37:26 And I will make a covenant of peace with them;…
Isa 32:17-18 The work of righteousness will be peace;…

and you will lie down with nothing to fear.

Families could rest without dread of raiders, enemy armies, or other threats that commonly endangered settled communities.

Job 11:19 You will lie down without fear, and many will…
Zep 3:13 The remnant of Israel will no longer do wrong or speak lies,…
Psa 4:8 I will lie down and sleep in peace, for You alone…

I will rid the land of dangerous animals,

God would restrain the wild creatures that threatened flocks, crops, and travelers, demonstrating His rule over the land He had given Israel.

Ezk 34:25 I will make with them a covenant of peace…
Job 5:22-23 You will laugh at destruction and famine,…
Exo 23:29-30 I will not drive them out before you in a single year;…

and no sword will pass through your land.

Foreign armies would not invade or wage war in Israel’s territory. The promised security depended on Israel remaining faithful to the Lord, while pointing forward to the complete peace established under Christ’s reign.

Hos 2:18 On that day I will make a covenant for them…
Isa 2:4 Then He will judge between the nations and arbitrate…
Mic 4:3 Then He will judge between many peoples and arbitrate…

You will pursue your enemies,

Israel’s obedience would bring God’s blessing and protection, including victory over hostile nations. Rather than merely surviving attack, Israel would drive back those who threatened the land God had given them.

2Sa 22:38 I pursued my enemies and destroyed them;…
Psa 18:37 I pursued my enemies and overtook them;…
Jos 10:19 But you, do not stop there. Pursue your enemies…

and they will fall by the sword before you.

Their defeat would be decisive, showing that Israel’s security depended ultimately on the Lord’s faithfulness and power rather than military strength alone.

Jos 8:24-25 When Israel had finished killing all the men of Ai…
Jos 10:28-30 On that day Joshua captured Makkedah and put it to the sword…
Deu 28:7 The LORD will cause the enemies who rise up against you…

Five of you will pursue a hundred,

God promised Israel military success far beyond ordinary human calculation when they walked in covenant obedience. A small number of Israelites would drive back a much larger force because the Lord Himself fought for them.

Jos 23:10 One of you can put a thousand to flight,…
Jdg 7:7 Then the LORD said to Gideon, “With the three hundred men…
1Sa 14:6 Jonathan said to the young man bearing his armor, “Come…

and a hundred of you will pursue ten thousand,

The increasing ratio portrays victory granted by divine power rather than superior numbers, weapons, or strategy. Israel’s victories in the land under Joshua demonstrated that the nations of Canaan could not stand when God gave His people the victory.

Deu 32:30 How could one man pursue a thousand, or two…
1Sa 18:7 And as the women danced, they sang out: “Saul has slain…
2Ch 14:11 Then Asa cried out to the LORD his God: “O LORD,…

and your enemies will fall by the sword before you.

Israel’s foes would be defeated in battle and removed from the land God had promised them. The sword represents the real military judgment God would bring against hostile nations, while Israel’s success remained dependent on faithful obedience.

Deu 28:7 The LORD will cause the enemies who rise up against you…
Jos 10:10 And the LORD threw them into confusion before Israel,…
Jos 8:24 When Israel had finished killing all the men of Ai…

I will turn toward you

God promises His favorable presence to Israel, showing that He has not withdrawn from them but remains attentive to their welfare as His covenant people.

Num 6:25-26 may the LORD cause His face to shine upon you…
Psa 31:16 Make Your face shine on Your servant; save me…

and make you fruitful and multiply you,

Obedience would bring growing families, healthy livestock, and abundant harvests. In Israel’s agricultural society, such increase demonstrated God’s blessing and the preservation of the nation.

Gen 35:11 And God told him, “I am God Almighty. Be fruitful…
Gen 17:6 I will make you exceedingly fruitful;…

and I will establish My covenant with you.

The Lord would uphold His covenant relationship with Israel, confirming the promises made to their fathers and the obligations given through Moses. Their continued blessing depended on faithful obedience, while God remained true to His word.

Gen 9:9 Behold, I now establish My covenant with you…
Gen 17:7 I will establish My covenant as an everlasting covenant…

You will still be eating the old supply of grain

God promised Israel harvests so abundant that the previous year’s grain would remain when the next harvest arrived. For an agrarian nation, this meant security, food, and freedom from famine.

Lev 25:21-22 But I will send My blessing upon you in the sixth year,…
Deu 28:8 The LORD will decree a blessing on your barns…
Pro 3:9-10 Honor the LORD with your wealth and with the firstfruits…

when you need to clear it out

The remaining stores would have to be removed, not because they had failed, but because fresh grain required space. Obedience would bring provision beyond immediate need.

2Ki 19:29 And this will be a sign to you, O Hezekiah: This year…
Isa 37:30 And this will be a sign to you, O Hezekiah: This year…
Deu 11:14-15 then I will provide rain for your land in season,…

to make room for the new.

Each harvest would testify to God’s continuing faithfulness. The abundance of the land would sustain Israel from year to year as they lived under His covenant blessing.

Jol 2:19 And the LORD answered His people: “Behold, I will send…
Amo 9:13 “Behold, the days are coming,” declares the LORD,…
Jer 31:12 They will come and shout for joy on the heights of Zion…

And I will make My dwelling place among you,

God promised to remain personally present with Israel in the tabernacle and, later, the temple. His dwelling in their midst marked them as His covenant people and set their worship apart from the nations. This visible fellowship anticipated Christ’s coming in the flesh and will be fully realized when God dwells with His redeemed people in the new creation.

Exo 25:8 And they are to make a sanctuary for Me,…
Exo 29:45-46 Then I will dwell among the Israelites and be their God.…
Ezk 37:27 My dwelling place will be with them; I will be their God…

and My soul will not despise you.

As Israel walked in covenant obedience, they would enjoy God’s favor rather than the judgment brought by rebellion. God would not reject the people He had chosen to dwell among, though persistent disobedience would bring discipline and exile. Through Christ, God’s people are accepted and brought into lasting fellowship with Him.

Jer 31:37 This is what the LORD says: “Only if the heavens above…
Psa 94:14 For the LORD will not forsake His people;…
Rom 11:2 God did not reject His people, whom He foreknew.…

I will walk among you

God promised to dwell in the midst of Israel, making His presence known among a people set apart for Him. The tabernacle, and later the temple, testified that the holy God had chosen to live among His covenant people. This fellowship recalls humanity’s lost communion with God in Eden and points forward to Christ, Immanuel, meaning “God with us,” and to the Spirit’s indwelling presence in believers.

2Co 6:16 What agreement can exist between the temple of God and idols…
Deu 23:14 For the LORD your God walks throughout your camp…
Ezk 37:27 My dwelling place will be with them; I will be their God…

and be your God,

The Lord bound Himself to Israel by covenant, declaring His faithful commitment to them. Their security rested not in their strength but in His sovereign grace and steadfast faithfulness. Through the New Covenant, this promise extends to all who belong to Christ.

Exo 6:7 I will take you as My own people, and I will be your God.…
Gen 17:7 I will establish My covenant as an everlasting covenant…
Jer 31:33 “But this is the covenant I will make”…

and you will be My people.

Israel’s identity and calling flowed from belonging to the Lord. They were to reflect His holiness through obedience, worship, and separation from the nations’ idolatry. God’s redeemed people ultimately include believers from every nation, who will dwell with Him forever.

Ezk 36:28 Then you will live in the land that I gave your forefathers;…
Hos 2:23 And I will sow her as My own in the land…
Rev 21:3 And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying:…

I am the LORD your God,

God identifies Himself as Israel’s covenant God, the One with rightful authority to command their obedience. His name and relationship with them rest on His own faithfulness and sovereign rule.

Exo 20:2 I am the LORD your God, who brought you out…
Deu 5:6 I am the LORD your God, who brought you out…
Ezk 20:5 This is what the Lord GOD says: On the day I chose Israel…

who brought you out of the land of Egypt

Israel’s existence as a free nation began with God’s historical deliverance from Egyptian slavery. He acted against Pharaoh, judged Egypt’s gods, and led His people out by His power.

Exo 6:6 Therefore tell the Israelites: ‘I am the LORD…
Deu 6:21 We were slaves of Pharaoh in Egypt, but the LORD brought us…
Exo 13:3 So Moses told the people, “Remember this day,…

so that you would no longer be slaves to the Egyptians.

God redeemed Israel from forced labor and foreign rule so they could belong to Him and serve Him alone. Egypt’s bondage stood in direct contrast to the life of worship and obedience God required of His people.

Exo 13:14 In the future, when your son asks you, ‘What does this mean?’…
Deu 15:15 Remember that you were slaves in the land of Egypt…
Jer 34:13 This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says:…

I broke the bars of your yoke

God ended the oppression that had held Israel under Egypt’s control. The yoke portrays the crushing burden of slavery, which He removed through the Exodus.

Ezk 34:27 The trees of the field will give their fruit,…
Jer 30:8 On that day, declares the LORD of Hosts,…
Nam 1:13 For I will now break their yoke from your neck and tear away…

and enabled you to walk in uprightness.

Having been freed from slavery, Israel could live with dignity rather than fear and humiliation. Their freedom carried the responsibility to walk faithfully before the God who redeemed them.

Jer 7:23 Obey Me, and I will be your God, and you will be My people.…
Deu 5:33 You must walk in all the ways that the LORD your God…
Deu 6:25 And if we are careful to observe the commandments…

Punishments for Disobedience

If, however, you fail to obey Me

Israel’s covenant blessings depended on faithful obedience to the Lord who had redeemed them and given them the land. Rejection of His commands would bring the covenant judgments described in the following verses.

Deu 28:15 If, however, you do not obey the LORD your God…
Deu 11:28 but a curse if you disobey the commandments of the LORD…
Jer 11:3 You must tell them that this is what the LORD,…

and to carry out all these commandments,

The requirement covered the whole Law God had given through Moses, not merely selected commands. Israel was called to live as God’s holy people, and persistent disobedience would reveal contempt for the covenant.

Deu 11:22 For if you carefully keep all these commandments…
Deu 6:25 And if we are careful to observe the commandments…
Jos 1:7-8 Above all, be strong and very courageous.…

and if you reject My statutes,

Israel’s statutes were God-given commands governing worship, justice, purity, and daily life under the covenant made at Sinai. To reject them was to renounce God’s authority and repeat the rebellion that marked Israel’s wilderness history.

2Ki 17:15 They rejected His statutes and the covenant…
Isa 5:24 Therefore, as a tongue of fire consumes the straw,…
Ezk 20:16 because they kept rejecting My ordinances…

despise My ordinances,

Such contempt went beyond occasional failure; it treated God’s righteous judgments as unwanted and burdensome. Israel’s later idolatry and injustice revealed this growing disregard for the order God had established among His people.

Ezk 20:13 Yet the house of Israel rebelled against Me…
Ezk 20:24 For they did not practice My ordinances, but they rejected…
Num 15:31 He shall certainly be cut off, because he has despised…

and neglect to carry out all My commandments,

Persistent disobedience involved refusing to practice what God had commanded in every area of covenant life. Israel’s history showed that neglect of God’s commands brought spiritual corruption, national weakness, and eventual judgment.

Deu 28:15 If, however, you do not obey the LORD your God…
Neh 1:7 We have behaved corruptly against You and have not kept…
Dan 9:5 we have sinned and done wrong. We have acted wickedly.…

and so break My covenant,

The covenant included both God’s promises and Israel’s obligation to obey Him. Their unfaithfulness violated that solemn relationship and brought the covenant curses God had warned would follow rebellion.

Deu 31:16 And the LORD said to Moses, “You will soon rest…
Jer 11:10 They have returned to the sins of their forefathers…
Hos 8:1 Put the ram’s horn to your lips! An eagle looms…

then this is what I will do to you:

Israel’s covenant with the Lord included real consequences for rebellion. Persistent disobedience would bring the reversal of the security, fruitfulness, and peace promised under His blessing.

Deu 28:15 If, however, you do not obey the LORD your God…
Jer 18:11 Now therefore, tell the men of Judah and the residents…

I will bring upon you sudden terror,

Fear and panic would replace the confidence of a people living under God’s protection. Rather than enjoying peace in the land, they would face insecurity and dread.

Pro 3:25 Do not fear sudden danger or the ruin that overtakes…
Jer 15:8 I will make their widows more numerous…

wasting disease, and fever that will destroy your sight and drain your life.

Physical suffering would weaken the nation, consuming its strength and diminishing its ability to work, defend itself, and enjoy the land. These judgments showed that sin affected every part of Israel’s life.

Deu 28:22 The LORD will strike you with wasting disease…
Psa 38:10 My heart pounds, my strength fails, and even the light…

You will sow your seed in vain, because your enemies will eat it.

Labor in the fields would no longer produce lasting provision. Foreign enemies would take what Israel had planted and harvested, a pattern later seen during invasions that led to national decline and exile.

Deu 28:33 A people you do not know will eat the produce of your land…
Isa 62:8 The LORD has sworn by His right hand and by His mighty arm:…

And I will set My face against you,

God’s favor would be withdrawn from Israel because of persistent covenant rebellion. Instead of His protecting presence, they would face His righteous judgment.

Jer 21:10 For I have set My face against this city…
Ezk 15:7 And I will set My face against them.…
Ezk 14:8 I will set My face against that man and make him a sign…

so that you will be defeated by your enemies.

Military defeat would reveal that the Lord was no longer granting Israel victory. Their security in the land depended upon obedience to the covenant.

Deu 28:25 The LORD will cause you to be defeated before your enemies.…
Jos 7:12 This is why the Israelites cannot stand…
1Sa 4:10 So the Philistines fought, and Israel was defeated…

Those who hate you will rule over you,

Foreign powers would subjugate Israel, reversing the freedom and inheritance God had given them. This judgment was repeatedly seen when Israel fell under hostile rulers because of idolatry and disobedience.

Psa 106:41 He delivered them into the hand of the nations…
Neh 9:37 Its abundant harvest goes to the kings You have set over us.…
Lam 5:8 Slaves rule over us; there is no one…

and you will flee when no one pursues you.

Fear would replace confidence as guilt and divine judgment left the people without peace. Even the absence of an immediate threat would produce panic and insecurity.

Pro 28:1 The wicked flee when no one pursues, but the righteous…
Psa 14:5 There they are, overwhelmed with dread…
Psa 53:5 There they are, overwhelmed with dread…

And if after all this you will not obey Me,

Israel’s continued refusal to obey after earlier warnings would reveal hardened rebellion against the covenant made at Sinai. God’s discipline was not arbitrary; it followed persistent disobedience and called the nation to recognize its sin and return to Him.

Deu 28:15 If, however, you do not obey the LORD your God…
Jer 7:23-24 Obey Me, and I will be your God, and you will be My people.…
Psa 81:11-12 But My people would not listen to Me, and Israel would not…

I will proceed to punish you sevenfold for your sins.

The punishment would be intensified in proportion to Israel’s rebellion, showing the full seriousness of covenant violation. God’s judgments upon the nation would unfold in stages, giving Israel repeated opportunities to repent while upholding His holiness and justice.

Gen 4:15 “Not so!” replied the LORD. “If anyone slays Cain…”…
Psa 79:12 Pay back into the laps of our neighbors sevenfold…
Pro 6:31 Yet if caught, he must pay sevenfold; he must give up…

I will break down your stubborn pride

Israel’s confidence in its own strength, wealth, and security would be shattered by God’s discipline. Their refusal to obey had hardened them against the Lord, making humility and repentance necessary.

Jer 13:9 This is what the LORD says: In the same way……
Ezk 30:6 For this is what the LORD says: The allies of Egypt…
Isa 13:11 I will punish the world for its evil and the wicked…

and make your sky like iron

The withheld rain would leave the heavens closed over the land. Since Israel depended on seasonal rains for crops and livestock, drought would bring hunger, loss, and national distress.

Deu 28:23 The sky over your head will be bronze, and the earth…
1Ki 8:35 When the skies are shut and there is no rain…
2Ch 6:26 When the skies are shut and there is no rain…

and your land like bronze,

Without rain, the soil would become hard and unproductive, unable to yield its usual harvest. The curse showed that the fertility and security of the promised land depended on Israel’s covenant obedience.

Deu 28:24 The LORD will turn the rain of your land into dust…
Hag 1:10-11 Therefore, on account of you the heavens have withheld…
Deu 11:17 or the anger of the LORD will be kindled…

and your strength will be spent in vain.

Israel’s labor would bring no lasting result because covenant disobedience placed them under God’s judgment. The effort invested in plowing, planting, and tending their fields would not secure prosperity apart from His favor.

Isa 49:4 I said, “I have labored in vain, I have spent My strength…
Jer 51:58 This is what the LORD of Hosts says: “Babylon’s thick walls……
Psa 127:1 A song of ascents. Of Solomon. Unless the LORD builds…

For your land will not yield its produce,

The promised land, normally a source of sustenance and wealth, would become unproductive. Since Israel’s life depended largely on agriculture, failed harvests would bring hunger, economic loss, and insecurity throughout the nation.

Hag 1:10-11 Therefore, on account of you the heavens have withheld…
Mic 6:15 You will sow but not reap; you will press olives…
Deu 28:38-40 You will sow much seed in the field, but harvest little…

and the trees of the land will not bear their fruit.

Orchards and vineyards, signs of settled life and abundance, would also fail. The judgment reached beyond human effort to the created order itself, showing that the Lord who gave Israel the land also governed its fruitfulness.

Jol 1:12 The grapevine is dried up, and the fig tree is withered;…
Jer 8:13 I will take away their harvest, declares the LORD.…
Hab 3:17 Though the olive crop fails and the fields produce no food,…

If you walk in hostility toward Me

Israel was warned against a settled pattern of opposition to the Lord and His covenant. Such hostility was displayed repeatedly in the nation’s idolatry, unbelief, and rejection of God’s appointed ways.

Jer 7:23-24 Obey Me, and I will be your God, and you will be My people.…
Deu 9:24 You have been rebelling against the LORD…

and refuse to obey Me,

Disobedience was more than breaking individual commands; it was a refusal to live as God’s covenant people. Their conduct would reveal whether they remained faithful to the God who had redeemed them from Egypt.

Deu 28:15 If, however, you do not obey the LORD your God…
1Sa 15:23 For rebellion is like the sin of divination…

I will multiply your plagues seven times,

Continued rebellion would bring increasingly severe judgment. The discipline would be complete and unmistakable, intended to confront Israel with the consequences of turning from the Lord.

Rev 15:1 Then I saw another great and marvelous sign in heaven:…
Rev 16:1 Then I heard a loud voice from the temple…
Deu 28:59-61 He will bring upon you and your descendants…

according to your sins.

God’s judgments would correspond to the nation’s guilt. Israel would not suffer arbitrarily, but because of persistent covenant unfaithfulness.

Psa 103:10 He has not dealt with us according to our sins…
Jer 17:10 I, the LORD, search the heart; I examine the mind…
Job 34:11 For according to a man’s deeds He repays him;…

I will send wild animals against you

Wild animals would become agents of God’s judgment, overturning the order in which humanity was given dominion over the creatures. Their presence would make settled life and cultivation dangerous.

Deu 32:24 They will be wasted from hunger and ravaged by pestilence…
Ezk 5:17 I will send famine and wild beasts against you…
2Ki 17:25-26 Now when the settlers first lived there,…

to rob you of your children,

The death of children would bring profound grief and threaten the future of families and the nation.

Jer 15:7 I will scatter them with a winnowing fork…
Hos 9:12 Even if they raise their children, I will bereave them.…
Deu 32:25 Outside, the sword will take their children,…

destroy your livestock,

Herds and flocks supplied food, clothing, labor, and wealth; their loss would produce hunger and economic collapse.

Exo 9:6 And the next day the LORD did just that.…
Ezk 14:21 For this is what the Lord GOD says: ‘How much worse……
Deu 28:31 Your ox will be slaughtered before your eyes,…

and reduce your numbers,

Death, fear, and displacement would diminish the population, reversing the growth and security Israel had received in the land.

Deu 28:62 You who were as numerous as the stars in the sky…
Deu 4:27 Then the LORD will scatter you among the peoples,…
Isa 1:9 Unless the LORD of Hosts had left us a few survivors,…

until your roads lie desolate.

Travel, trade, and communication would cease as communities were abandoned and the land became unsafe.

Jdg 5:6-7 In the days of Shamgar son of Anath, in the days…
Jer 9:12 Who is the man wise enough to understand this?…

And if in spite of these things

The escalating judgments described throughout the chapter were intended to turn Israel from sin and restore covenant faithfulness. Famine, defeat, disease, and desolation would show the consequences of rejecting the Lord’s commands.

Amo 4:6-11 I afflicted all your cities with cleanness of teeth…
Isa 9:13 But the people did not return to Him who struck them;…
2Ch 36:15-16 Again and again the LORD, the God of their fathers,…

you do not accept My discipline,

These afflictions were not random calamities but God’s correction of His covenant people. Refusing that correction meant refusing to acknowledge their sin or return to obedience.

Jer 5:3 O LORD, do not Your eyes look for truth?…
Jer 7:28 Therefore you must say to them, ‘This is the nation…
Pro 3:11-12 My son, do not reject the discipline of the LORD,…

but continue to walk in hostility toward Me,

Persistent rebellion would reveal a settled opposition to God’s rule. Israel’s conduct, rather than a single act of disobedience, would determine the further judgment announced in the following verses.

Jer 11:8 Yet they would not obey or incline their ears,…
Neh 9:29 You admonished them to turn back to Your law,…
Psa 78:10 They failed to keep God’s covenant and refused…

then I will act with hostility toward you,

God warns that persistent rebellion will bring covenant judgment rather than protection. Israel had entered a binding covenant with the Lord at Sinai, receiving promises of blessing for obedience and severe consequences for rejecting His commands. Their sin would place them under the discipline of the holy God they had refused to obey.

Deu 28:63 Just as it pleased the LORD to make you prosper…
Jer 21:5 And I Myself will fight against you with a mighty arm…
Isa 63:10 But they rebelled and grieved His Holy Spirit.…

and I will strike you sevenfold for your sins.

The judgment would be complete and proportionate to Israel’s continued disobedience. “Sevenfold” emphasizes the fullness of the punishment, showing that God would not overlook deliberate rebellion. The escalating judgments in this chapter were intended to confront Israel with the seriousness of sin and call the nation back to faithful obedience.

Gen 4:15 “Not so!” replied the LORD. “If anyone slays Cain…”…
Psa 79:12 Pay back into the laps of our neighbors sevenfold…
Num 14:34 In keeping with the forty days you spied out the land,…

And I will bring a sword against you

God warns that war would come upon Israel as judgment for covenant disobedience. Foreign armies would become the means by which He disciplined His people, as later occurred through Assyria and Babylon.

Ezk 5:17 I will send famine and wild beasts against you…
Jer 25:29 For behold, I am beginning to bring disaster…
Deu 32:25 Outside, the sword will take their children,…

to execute the vengeance of the covenant.

The covenant at Sinai included consequences for rebellion as well as blessings for obedience. God’s vengeance refers to His just enforcement of the terms Israel had accepted, not to uncontrolled anger.

Jer 11:8-10 Yet they would not obey or incline their ears,…
Ezk 16:59 For this is what the Lord GOD says: I will deal with you…
Deu 32:35-36 Vengeance is Mine; I will repay. In due time…

Though you withdraw into your cities,

Fortified cities offered protection from ordinary enemies, but their walls could not shield Israel from the judgment of God. Jerusalem’s later fall showed the limits of military strength when the nation persisted in sin.

Deu 28:52 They will besiege all the cities throughout your land,…
Jer 4:5 Announce in Judah, proclaim in Jerusalem, and say:…
Jer 5:17 They will devour your harvest and food; they will eat up……

I will send a plague among you,

Disease would add to the devastation of war and siege, weakening the population within the cities. Such judgment exposed Israel’s dependence on God for life and safety.

2Ch 7:13 If I close the sky so there is no rain, or if I command…
2Sa 24:15 So the LORD sent a plague upon Israel from that morning…
Jer 21:6 I will strike down the residents of this city…

and you will be delivered into the hand of the enemy.

Those who survived would fall under foreign control, fulfilling the covenant warnings of defeat, captivity, and exile.

Deu 28:25 The LORD will cause you to be defeated before your enemies.…
2Ki 21:14 So I will forsake the remnant of My inheritance…
Jer 34:20 I will deliver into the hands of their enemies…

When I cut off your supply of bread,

God warns that persistent covenant rebellion will bring famine, removing the ordinary provision on which life depends. Bread, the basic food of Israelite households, represents the daily sustenance God ordinarily grants his people.

Psa 105:16 He called down famine on the land and cut off…
Isa 3:1 For behold, the Lord GOD of Hosts is about to remove…
Ezk 5:16 When I shower you with the deadly arrows of famine…

ten women will bake your bread in a single oven

Conditions will become so severe that households will no longer have enough grain to bake separately. Many women will share one oven because each has only a small amount of dough.

Ezk 4:12-13 And you shall eat the food as you would a barley cake,…
Lam 5:10 Our skin is as hot as an oven with fever from our hunger.
1Ki 17:12-13 But she replied, “As surely as the LORD your God lives,…

and dole out your bread by weight,

Food will be rationed carefully, with each portion measured to preserve a dwindling supply. What was once abundant will become scarce and tightly controlled.

Ezk 4:16 Then He told me, “Son of man, I am going to cut off…
Ezk 4:10-11 You are to weigh out twenty shekels of food…
2Ki 6:25 So there was a great famine in Samaria…

so that you will eat but not be satisfied.

The people will receive enough to prolong life but not enough to relieve hunger. Their want will demonstrate the devastating consequences of rejecting the Lord’s covenant and depending on resources that cannot sustain them.

Mic 6:14 You will eat but not be satisfied, and your hunger…
Hag 1:6 You have planted much but harvested little…
Ecc 6:7 All a man’s labor is for his mouth, yet…

But if in spite of all this

Even after the severe judgments described earlier in the chapter—disease, famine, defeat, and desolation—Israel could still refuse to return to the LORD. Their continued rebellion would show that the discipline had not produced repentance.

2Ch 36:15-16 Again and again the LORD, the God of their fathers,…
Jer 25:4-7 And the LORD has sent all His servants the prophets to you…
2Ki 17:13-14 Yet through all His prophets and seers, the LORD…

you do not obey Me,

Israel’s covenant with God required faithful submission to His commands. Persistent refusal to obey would be a rejection of the covenant relationship and of the God who had delivered and sustained them.

Deu 28:15 If, however, you do not obey the LORD your God…
Jer 7:23-24 Obey Me, and I will be your God, and you will be My people.…
Deu 11:26-28 See, today I am setting before you a blessing and a curse—…

but continue to walk in hostility toward Me,

Their rebellion would become a settled way of life, marked by active resistance to God’s will. Such hostility would bring further judgment, culminating in the devastation and exile later experienced by Israel and Judah.

Deu 29:19-20 because when such a person hears the words…
Jer 18:12 But they will reply, ‘It is hopeless…
Deu 31:16-18 And the LORD said to Moses, “You will soon rest…

then I will walk in fury against you,

God would personally oppose Israel with righteous anger because of persistent covenant rebellion. His judgment would no longer be merely a warning through hardship but an active intervention against a people who had rejected His commands.

Jer 21:5 And I Myself will fight against you with a mighty arm…
Ezk 5:13 And when My anger is spent and I have vented My wrath…
Ezk 8:18 Therefore I will respond with wrath. I will not look on them…

and I, even I, will punish you

The Lord emphasizes that He Himself is the Judge bringing this discipline. Israel’s suffering would not be accidental or attributable merely to surrounding nations; it would come under God’s sovereign judgment for violating the covenant.

Jer 21:14 I will punish you as your deeds deserve, declares the LORD.…
Amo 3:2 Only you have I known from all the families of the earth;…
Ezk 7:9 I will not look on you with pity, nor will I spare you, but I will punish you for your ways…

sevenfold for your sins.

The punishment would be complete and severe, proportionate to Israel’s continuing sin. These escalating judgments were intended to expose the seriousness of rebellion and bring the nation to repentance.

Psa 79:12 Pay back into the laps of our neighbors sevenfold…
Isa 40:2 Speak tenderly to Jerusalem, and proclaim to her…
Jer 16:18 And I will first repay them double their iniquity…

You will eat the flesh

God warns that covenant rebellion would bring siege, famine, and utter collapse. Cannibalism, regarded as abhorrent, depicts the extreme desperation that would accompany His judgment.

Jer 19:9 I will make them eat the flesh of their sons and daughters,…
Ezk 5:10 As a result, fathers among you will eat their sons…
Deu 28:57 the afterbirth that comes from between her legs…

of your own sons and daughters.

The judgment would strike the household itself, turning children—normally received as God’s blessing and the hope of a family’s future—into victims of famine. Israel later experienced such horrors during periods of siege, confirming the seriousness of God’s warnings.

Deu 28:53 Then you will eat the fruit of your womb,…
2Ki 6:28-29 Then the king asked her, “What is the matter?”…
Lam 4:10 The hands of compassionate women have cooked…

I will destroy your high places,

God would tear down the elevated shrines where Israel imitated Canaanite worship and served false gods. Though some high places had once been used in Israel’s history, they had become centers of unauthorized and idolatrous worship.

Num 33:52 you must drive out before you all the inhabitants…
Deu 12:2-3 Destroy completely all the places where the nations…
2Ki 18:4 He removed the high places, shattered the sacred pillars…

cut down your incense altars,

The altars and incense stands connected with pagan devotion would not survive God’s judgment. Israel had abandoned the worship He commanded and adopted practices associated with foreign deities.

2Ch 34:4 Then in his presence the altars of the Baals were torn down…
2Ch 30:14 They proceeded to remove the altars in Jerusalem…
Ezk 6:4-6 Your altars will be demolished and your incense altars…

and heap your lifeless bodies on the lifeless remains of your idols;

Those who trusted in idols would perish beside them, exposing the helplessness of the gods they served. The image anticipates the devastation that persistent rebellion would bring upon the land.

Ezk 6:5-7 I will lay the corpses of the Israelites before their idols…
2Ch 34:5 Then he burned the bones of the priests on their altars.…
2Ki 23:14-20 He smashed the sacred pillars to pieces,…

and My soul will despise you.

Israel’s idolatry violated the covenant and provoked God’s holy rejection. Continued disobedience would bring judgment, exile, and the loss of the blessings attached to covenant faithfulness.

Jer 14:19 Have You rejected Judah completely? Do You despise Zion?…
Psa 78:59 On hearing it, God was furious and rejected Israel…
Psa 106:40 So the anger of the LORD burned against His people…

I will reduce your cities to rubble

Covenant rebellion would bring national devastation, leaving Israel’s fortified centers and communities destroyed. This warning was realized in the Babylonian campaigns against Judah, culminating in Jerusalem’s fall and the destruction of its cities.

Isa 25:2 Indeed, You have made the city a heap of rubble…
Mic 3:12 Therefore, because of you, Zion will be plowed like a field…
Jer 9:11 And I will make Jerusalem a heap of rubble…

and lay waste your sanctuaries,

The judgment would reach Israel’s places of worship, including the temple in Jerusalem. When Babylon destroyed the First Temple in 586 BC, the loss exposed the seriousness of Judah’s unfaithfulness and ended the established sacrificial ministry for the exiles.

Psa 74:7 They have burned Your sanctuary to the ground;…
Lam 2:6-7 He has laid waste His tabernacle like a garden booth…
2Ch 36:19 Then the Chaldeans set fire to the house of God…

and I will refuse to smell the pleasing aroma of your sacrifices.

God would no longer accept offerings from a people persisting in disobedience. Sacrifices were never meant to substitute for covenant faithfulness. Israel’s rejected worship anticipated the need for the perfect sacrifice of Christ, whose offering fully atones for sin.

Jer 6:20 What use to Me is frankincense from Sheba or sweet cane…
Amo 5:21-22 “I hate, I despise your feasts! I cannot stand the stench”…
Isa 1:13-15 Bring your worthless offerings no more; your incense…

And I will lay waste the land,

God warned that persistent covenant rebellion would bring judgment upon Israel’s land. The devastation would be so complete that the land promised to Abraham’s descendants would become desolate. This was fulfilled in the invasions and exile under Babylon, when cities, fields, and worship centers were ruined.

Ezk 6:14 I will stretch out My hand against them,…
Ezk 33:28 I will make the land a desolate waste, and the pride…
Jer 25:11 And this whole land will become a desolate wasteland…

so that your enemies who dwell in it

Foreign nations would occupy the land Israel had forfeited through disobedience. Those who had conquered Israel would live among its ruins, demonstrating that possession of the land depended on Israel’s faithfulness to the covenant.

2Ki 17:24 Then the king of Assyria brought people from…
Lam 5:2 Our inheritance has been turned over to strangers,…
Isa 1:7 Your land is desolate; your cities are burned with fire.…

will be appalled.

Even Israel’s enemies would be struck by the extent of the destruction. The desolation would testify that the judgment was not merely the result of military defeat, but the righteous discipline of God against His covenant people.

Jer 18:16 They have made their land a desolation, a perpetual…
Jer 19:8 I will make this city a desolation and…
Jer 49:17 Edom will become an object of horror. All who pass by…

But I will scatter you among the nations

Israel’s persistent covenant rebellion would bring removal from the land God had given them. This warning was fulfilled in the Assyrian conquest of the northern kingdom and the Babylonian exile of Judah, when Israelites were carried into foreign lands.

Lev 20:24 But I have told you that you will inherit their land,…
Deu 4:27 Then the LORD will scatter you among the peoples,…
Deu 28:64 Then the LORD will scatter you among all the nations,…

and will draw out a sword after you

Exile would not end the judgment. God would permit hostile nations to pursue and oppress His people, leaving them without the security they had forfeited through disobedience.

Ezk 5:12 A third of your people will die by plague…
Jer 9:16 I will scatter them among the nations…
Jer 49:37 So I will shatter Elam before their foes,…

as your land becomes desolate

The promised land would be left abandoned and unproductive, displaying the seriousness of Israel’s breach of covenant. Fields, villages, and sacred places would stand empty while the people lived in captivity.

Jer 25:11 And this whole land will become a desolate wasteland…
Jer 4:27 For this is what the LORD says: “The whole land…
Ezk 6:14 I will stretch out My hand against them,…

and your cities are laid waste.

Jerusalem and other fortified cities would be ruined by invading armies. Their destruction would end normal civic and religious life and show that neither walls nor institutions could protect a nation that rejected God’s commands.

Ezk 12:20 The inhabited cities will be laid waste…
Ezk 6:6 Wherever you live, the cities will be laid waste…
Jer 9:11 And I will make Jerusalem a heap of rubble…

Then the land shall enjoy its Sabbaths

Israel had neglected the Sabbath years God required for the land every seventh year. Their removal would accomplish what their disobedience had prevented: the land would receive its appointed rest.

Lev 25:2-5 Speak to the Israelites and say to them: When you enter…
Exo 23:10-11 For six years you are to sow your land and gather…

all the days it lies desolate,

The devastation following the Babylonian conquest left fields uncultivated and cities abandoned. The seventy-year exile corresponded to the Sabbath years Israel had failed to observe.

Jer 25:11-12 And this whole land will become a desolate wasteland…
Isa 6:11-12 Then I asked: “How long, O Lord?” And He replied……

while you are in the land of your enemies.

Exile removed the people from the inheritance God had given them and placed them under foreign rule. Their displacement fulfilled the covenant judgment warned of for persistent rebellion.

1Ki 8:46-50 When they sin against You—for there is no one…
Deu 28:64 Then the LORD will scatter you among all the nations,…

At that time the land will rest

God remained sovereign over both Israel and the land. Though His people were scattered, He preserved the land through its period of desolation.

Isa 14:7 All the earth is at peace and at rest; …
Zec 7:14 But I scattered them with a whirlwind…

and enjoy its Sabbaths.

The enforced rest demonstrated that God’s commands could not be ignored without consequence. The land’s Sabbath rest stood as a witness to Israel’s broken covenant and to God’s faithfulness in carrying out His word.

2Ch 36:20-21 Those who escaped the sword were carried by…
Ezk 36:34-35 The desolate land will be cultivated instead of…

As long as it lies desolate,

Israel’s exile would leave the land unoccupied as judgment for persistent covenant disobedience. The empty fields and cities testified that the people had forfeited the privileges of dwelling in the land God had given them.

Jer 25:11 And this whole land will become a desolate wasteland…
Ezk 36:34-35 The desolate land will be cultivated instead of…
Jer 4:27 For this is what the LORD says: “The whole land…

the land will have the rest

During the Babylonian exile, the land would receive the rest Israel had withheld. The Sabbath-year requirement taught that the land belonged to the Lord and that Israel depended on His provision rather than continual cultivation.

Lev 25:2-5 Speak to the Israelites and say to them: When you enter…
Exo 23:10-11 For six years you are to sow your land and gather…
Lev 25:20-22 Now you may wonder, ‘What will we eat in the seventh year…

it did not receive during the Sabbaths

Israel’s neglect of the Sabbath years revealed a broader pattern of unbelief and disobedience. By refusing to let the land lie fallow, the nation disregarded God’s command and failed to trust Him to sustain them, leading to the land’s enforced rest during the exile.

2Ch 36:21 So the land enjoyed its Sabbath rest all the days…
Lev 25:8-10 And you shall count off seven Sabbaths of years…
Neh 10:31 When the people of the land bring merchandise or grain…

when you lived in it.

While Israel occupied the Promised Land, its continued blessing was tied to covenant obedience. Exile showed that possession of the land was not unconditional; God held His people accountable for how they lived within it.

Ezk 36:17-18 Son of man, when the people of Israel lived in their land,…
Jer 16:18 And I will first repay them double their iniquity…
Deu 4:25-27 After you have children and grandchildren…

As for those of you who survive,

Those left alive after Israel’s defeat would bear the consequences of the nation’s rebellion. Even in judgment, God preserved a remnant rather than utterly destroying His people.

Deu 28:62 You who were as numerous as the stars in the sky…
Deu 4:27 Then the LORD will scatter you among the peoples,…
Isa 1:9 Unless the LORD of Hosts had left us a few survivors,…

I will send a faintness into their hearts

God would give them inward fear and distress, leaving them without courage or confidence.

Deu 28:65 Among those nations you will find no repose,…
Jos 2:11 When we heard this, our hearts melted…
Deu 20:8 Then the officers shall speak further to the army, saying,…

in the lands of their enemies,

Removed from the land promised to them, they would live under foreign rule among nations that had conquered them.

1Ki 8:46 When they sin against You—for there is no one…
Ezk 12:15 And they will know that I am the LORD, when I disperse them…
Jer 16:13 So I will cast you out of this land into a land…

so that even the sound of a windblown leaf will put them to flight.

Their fear would become so great that the smallest sound would seem like an approaching threat.

Job 13:25 Would You frighten a windblown leaf? Would You chase after…
2Ki 7:6 For the Lord had caused the Arameans to hear the sound…
Isa 7:2 When it was reported to the house of David…

And they will flee as one flees the sword,

Though no enemy may be near, they would live as if danger were constantly pursuing them.

Deu 28:25 The LORD will cause you to be defeated before your enemies.…
Isa 31:8 Then Assyria will fall, but not by the sword of man;…
Job 20:24 Though he flees from an iron weapon, a bronze-tipped arrow…

and fall when no one pursues them.

Their collapse would come from terror within as well as defeat without, showing the loss of security that followed their refusal to obey God.

Pro 28:1 The wicked flee when no one pursues, but the righteous…
Psa 53:5 There they are, overwhelmed with dread…
Jer 46:5 Why am I seeing this? They are terrified, they are retreating;…

They will stumble over one another

Terror will overwhelm the survivors, producing panic and disorder among them.

Jer 46:12 The nations have heard of your shame, and your outcry…
1Sa 14:20 Then Saul and all his troops assembled and marched…
Jdg 7:22 And when the three hundred rams’ horns sounded,…

as before the sword,

They will flee as if attacked in battle, unable to think or act with courage.

Isa 31:8 Then Assyria will fall, but not by the sword of man;…
Jer 50:16 Cut off the sower from Babylon, and the one who wields…
Job 20:24 Though he flees from an iron weapon, a bronze-tipped arrow…

though no one is behind them.

God’s judgment will leave them consumed by fear even when no enemy is pursuing them.

Pro 28:1 The wicked flee when no one pursues, but the righteous…
Psa 53:5 There they are, overwhelmed with dread…
Psa 14:5 There they are, overwhelmed with dread…

So you will not be able to stand against your enemies.

Having rejected the covenant, Israel will lose the protection and strength needed to resist the nations sent against them.

Jos 7:12 This is why the Israelites cannot stand…
Jdg 2:14 Then the anger of the LORD burned against Israel,…
Deu 7:24 He will hand their kings over to you, and you will…

You will perish among the nations,

Israel’s persistent idolatry and covenant rebellion would bring exile and scattering among foreign peoples. Assyria carried away the northern kingdom, and Babylon later deported Judah, leaving the people subject to nations that did not worship the Lord.

Deu 4:26-27 I call heaven and earth as witnesses against you this day…
Deu 28:63-64 Just as it pleased the LORD to make you prosper…
Ezk 20:23-24 However, with an uplifted hand I swore to them…

and the land of your enemies will consume you.

Exile meant more than removal from the promised land; many would die through war, famine, disease, and hardship in enemy territory. Those who survived faced the danger of losing their identity through life among pagan nations, demonstrating the severity of rejecting God’s covenant.

Num 13:32 So they gave the Israelites a bad report about the land…
Ezk 36:13 For this is what the Lord GOD says: Because people say…
Lev 18:25 Even the land has become defiled, so I am punishing it…

Those of you who survive in the lands of your enemies

The survivors of Israel’s judgment would live as exiles among foreign nations after the loss of the land God had given them. Assyria and Babylon later carried out this judgment, leaving Israel scattered and deprived of the security and worship centered in the Promised Land.

Deu 4:27-28 Then the LORD will scatter you among the peoples,…
Deu 28:64-65 Then the LORD will scatter you among all the nations,…
Ezk 6:8-10 Yet I will leave a remnant, for some of you…

will waste away in their iniquity

Exile would bring continuing decline because the people remained under the consequences of their rebellion against God’s covenant. Their suffering was not accidental but the result of persistent idolatry, injustice, and refusal to obey the Lord.

Ezk 4:17 So they will lack food and water; they will be appalled…
Ezk 24:23 Your turbans will remain on your heads.…
Ezk 33:10 Now as for you, son of man, tell the house of Israel…

and will decay in the sins of their fathers.

The descendants would bear the effects of earlier generations’ rebellion while also continuing in the same sins themselves. The nation’s long history of unfaithfulness had produced a pattern of corruption that required confession, repentance, and God’s restoring mercy.

Lam 5:7 Our fathers sinned and are no more, but we bear…
Exo 20:5 You shall not bow down to them or worship them;…
Num 14:18 The LORD is slow to anger and abounding in loving devotion…

God Remembers Those Who Repent

But if they will confess their iniquity

Restoration begins when Israel openly acknowledges its sin before God. Their exile and discipline are not treated as misfortune but as the covenant consequences of rebellion.

Dan 9:4-5 And I prayed to the LORD my God and confessed,…
Neh 1:6-7 Your eyes be open and Your ears attentive to hear…
1Ki 8:47-50 We have sinned and done wrong; we have acted wickedly…

and that of their fathers

Israel must also recognize the long pattern of unfaithfulness inherited from earlier generations. The nation’s history included repeated rejection of God’s commands, and the people had continued in those same sins.

Jer 14:20 We acknowledge our wickedness, O LORD, the guilt…
Neh 9:2 Those of Israelite descent separated themselves…
Dan 9:16 O Lord, in keeping with all Your righteous acts,…

in the unfaithfulness that they practiced against Me,

Their offense was covenant treachery expressed through idolatry, disobedience, and refusal to live as God’s holy people. Their actions showed a settled departure from the Lord who had redeemed them.

Hos 6:7 But they, like Adam, have transgressed the covenant;…
Jer 3:20 But as a woman may betray her husband, so you have betrayed…
2Ch 36:14 Furthermore, all the leaders of the priests and the people…

by which they have also walked in hostility toward Me—

Israel had lived in deliberate opposition to God’s will. Confession required admitting that their suffering came from persistent rebellion and that reconciliation could come only through humble return to Him.

Isa 63:10 But they rebelled and grieved His Holy Spirit.…
2Ch 36:15-16 Again and again the LORD, the God of their fathers,…

and I acted with hostility toward them

God’s judgment answered Israel’s persistent rebellion and idolatry. The covenant warnings included discipline designed to expose their sin and bring them to repentance.

Isa 63:10 But they rebelled and grieved His Holy Spirit.…
Lam 2:5 The Lord is like an enemy; He has swallowed up Israel.…
Psa 106:40-42 So the anger of the LORD burned against His people…

and brought them into the land of their enemies—

Israel’s exile among hostile nations fulfilled the consequences God had announced. Assyria later carried away the northern kingdom, and Babylon conquered Judah and Jerusalem, removing the people from the land God had given them.

1Ki 8:46-47 When they sin against You—for there is no one…
2Ch 6:36-37 When they sin against You—for there is no one…
Jer 16:13 So I will cast you out of this land into a land…

and if their uncircumcised hearts will be humbled

Outward covenant signs were meaningless without inward submission to God. In exile, Israel would be forced to confront the stubbornness and unbelief that had led to judgment.

Jer 4:4 Circumcise yourselves to the LORD, and remove the foreskins…
Ezk 44:7-9 In addition to all your other abominations,…
2Ch 7:14 if My people who are called by My name humble themselves…

and they will make amends for their iniquity,

Genuine repentance required acknowledging guilt and accepting God’s righteous discipline. Confession and a return to covenant faithfulness opened the way for restoration.

Dan 9:5-6 we have sinned and done wrong. We have acted wickedly.…
Hos 14:1-2 Return, O Israel, to the LORD your God for you have stumbled…
Ezk 18:30-32 Therefore, O house of Israel, I will judge you…

then I will remember My covenant with Jacob

God’s covenant with Jacob confirms His enduring commitment to Israel. Though Jacob’s life included failure, discipline, and transformation, God preserved the promises of descendants, land, and blessing given through Abraham.

Gen 28:13-15 And there at the top the LORD was standing and saying,…
Gen 35:11-12 And God told him, “I am God Almighty. Be fruitful…
Gen 32:9-12 Then Jacob declared, “O God of my father Abraham,…

and My covenant with Isaac

Isaac received the same covenant promises as Abraham, including the land of Canaan and a numerous offspring. His place in the covenant line shows that God’s purposes continued through the patriarchs according to His sovereign promise.

Gen 17:19-21 But God replied, “Your wife Sarah will bear you a son,…
Gen 26:2-5 The LORD appeared to Isaac and said, “Do not go down…

and My covenant with Abraham,

Abraham stands at the beginning of Israel’s covenant history. God promised to make his descendants into a great nation, give them the land, and bring blessing through his seed. Israel’s disobedience did not cancel those commitments.

Gen 17:7-8 I will establish My covenant as an everlasting covenant…
Gen 22:16-18 By Myself I have sworn, declares the LORD, …
Gen 12:1-3 Then the LORD said to Abram, “Leave your country…

and I will remember the land.

The land of Canaan belonged to Israel by God’s covenant grant. Even after exile and judgment, God’s remembrance includes the future restoration of His people to the land promised to their fathers.

Gen 15:18-21 On that day the LORD made a covenant with Abram…
Exo 6:4-8 I also established My covenant with them to give…
Deu 30:1-5 When all these things come upon you—the blessings and curses…

For the land will be abandoned by them,

Israel’s exile would leave the Promised Land without its covenant people. This judgment was realized when Babylon carried Judah into captivity, and the land lay largely desolate because of the nation’s persistent disobedience.

Jer 12:11 They have made it a desolation; desolate before Me…
Jer 4:27 For this is what the LORD says: “The whole land…
Isa 6:11-12 Then I asked: “How long, O Lord?” And He replied……

and it will enjoy its Sabbaths by lying desolate without them.

During the exile, the land received the rest Israel had failed to give it in the appointed sabbatical years. Even in judgment, God’s commands concerning the land were fulfilled.

2Ch 36:21 So the land enjoyed its Sabbath rest all the days…
Lev 25:4-5 But in the seventh year there shall be a Sabbath…
