Jeremiah Buys Hanamel’s Field

This is the word that came to Jeremiah from the LORD

Jeremiah received God’s message during Judah’s final crisis. His ministry carried divine authority as he proclaimed both judgment for persistent rebellion and hope beyond exile.

Jer 30:1 This is the word that came to Jeremiah from the LORD:
Jer 36:1 In the fourth year of Jehoiakim son of Josiah king of Judah,…
Jer 1:2 The word of the LORD came to Jeremiah in the thirteenth year…

in the tenth year of Zedekiah king of Judah,

This was 588–587 BC, while Babylon’s army besieged Jerusalem. Zedekiah, Judah’s last king, had resisted Babylon despite Jeremiah’s warnings and sought help from Egypt rather than submitting to God’s appointed discipline.

Jer 39:1 In the ninth year of Zedekiah king of Judah,…
Jer 52:4 Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon marched against Jerusalem…
2Ch 36:11-13 Zedekiah was twenty-one years old when he became king,…

which was the eighteenth year of Nebuchadnezzar.

Nebuchadnezzar II was completing his campaign against Judah, which soon ended with Jerusalem’s fall, the temple’s destruction, and the exile of many survivors to Babylon.

2Ki 25:1 Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon marched against Jerusalem…
2Ki 25:8 On the seventh day of the fifth month,…
Jer 52:12 On the tenth day of the fifth month, in the nineteenth year…

At that time

Zedekiah was reigning as Judah’s final king, and Babylon’s campaign against Jerusalem had reached its decisive stage around 588–586 BC.

Ezk 24:1-2 In the ninth year, on the tenth day of the tenth month,…
Jer 37:5 Pharaoh’s army had left Egypt, and when the Chaldeans…
2Ch 36:17 So He brought up against them the king of the Chaldeans,…

the army of the king of Babylon was besieging Jerusalem,

Nebuchadnezzar’s forces had surrounded the city, cutting off provisions and forcing Judah toward the judgment repeatedly announced through Jeremiah.

and Jeremiah the prophet

Jeremiah had faithfully proclaimed God’s warning that Jerusalem would fall because of Judah’s persistent rebellion, while also declaring that God would preserve a future for His people.

2Ch 36:12 And he did evil in the sight of the LORD his God…
Jer 25:2 So the prophet Jeremiah spoke to all the people of Judah…
Jer 29:1 This is the text of the letter that Jeremiah the prophet…

was imprisoned in the courtyard of the guard,

Zedekiah confined Jeremiah because the prophet’s message of Babylonian victory was considered harmful to the city’s defense. The guarded courtyard provided limited confinement within the royal complex.

Jer 37:21 So King Zedekiah gave orders for Jeremiah to be placed…
Jer 38:13 and they pulled him up with the ropes and lifted him…
Jer 38:6 So they took Jeremiah and dropped him into the cistern…

which was in the palace of the king of Judah.

Jeremiah remained near the center of Judah’s political authority, where his imprisonment exposed the king’s refusal to submit to God’s word even as the city faced destruction.

Jer 39:8 The Chaldeans set fire to the palace of the king…
2Ki 25:9 He burned down the house of the LORD, the royal palace,…
2Ch 36:19 Then the Chaldeans set fire to the house of God…

For Zedekiah king of Judah had imprisoned him, saying:

Zedekiah, Judah’s final king, had Jeremiah confined during Babylon’s siege of Jerusalem. The king faced pressure from Babylon and unrest within the city, yet he resisted Jeremiah’s repeated warnings that surrender was God’s appointed course. Jeremiah’s imprisonment showed Judah’s leaders rejecting the word God had sent through him.

Jer 37:15-16 The officials were angry with Jeremiah, and they beat him…
Jer 38:5-6 “Here he is,” replied King Zedekiah. “He is in your hands,”…

“Why are you prophesying like this?

Zedekiah objected because Jeremiah’s message contradicted the assurances of false prophets and offered no promise of immediate relief. Like many rulers who opposed God’s messengers, he treated the warning as disloyalty rather than acknowledging Judah’s sin.

Jer 26:8-11 and as soon as he had finished telling all the people…
Amo 7:12-13 And Amaziah said to Amos, “Go away, you seer!…

You claim that the LORD says,

Jeremiah spoke under the authority of the LORD, not from political calculation or personal hostility toward the king. His message called Judah to recognize that Babylon’s advance was God’s judgment for persistent covenant rebellion.

Deu 18:20-22 But if any prophet dares to speak a message in My name…
Jer 23:16-17 This is what the LORD of Hosts says: “Do not listen…

‘Behold, I am about to deliver this city into the hand of the king of Babylon,

Jerusalem’s fall was not merely the result of Babylonian strength. God was giving the city into Nebuchadnezzar’s hand after generations of idolatry, injustice, and refusal to heed His prophets. The coming judgment would bring an end to the kingdom of Judah and the destruction of the temple.

Jer 21:10 For I have set My face against this city…
Jer 34:2-3 The LORD, the God of Israel, told Jeremiah to go…

and he will capture it.

Nebuchadnezzar captured Jerusalem in 586 BC, destroyed the city and temple, and carried many of its people into exile. The collapse of the Davidic kingdom confirmed Jeremiah’s warning, while God’s later promises of restoration preserved hope for His covenant purposes.

2Ki 25:1-4 Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon marched against Jerusalem…
Jer 39:2 And on the ninth day of the fourth month,…

Zedekiah king of Judah will not escape from the hands of the Chaldeans,

Zedekiah’s rebellion against Babylon brought Jerusalem under Nebuchadnezzar’s final siege. Though he sought to preserve his throne and later attempted to flee the city, he could not avoid the judgment God had declared against Judah.

Jer 38:23 All your wives and children will be brought out…
2Ki 25:4-5 Then the city was breached; and though the Chaldeans…
Jer 52:7-8 Then the city was breached; and though the Chaldeans…

but he will surely be delivered into the hand of the king of Babylon,

When Jerusalem fell in 586 BC, Zedekiah was captured near Jericho and taken to Nebuchadnezzar at Riblah. Babylon’s king acted as the instrument of God’s judgment, bringing the Davidic kingdom in Jerusalem to its end.

Jer 21:7 ‘After that,’ declares the LORD, ‘I will hand over……
Ezk 17:20 I will spread My net over him and catch him in My snare.…
Jer 27:6 So now I have placed all these lands under the authority…

and will speak with him face to face

Zedekiah was brought directly before Nebuchadnezzar to answer for his rebellion. The meeting exposed the collapse of his resistance and the certainty of the warning he had repeatedly rejected.

2Ki 25:6 The Chaldeans seized the king and brought him up…
Jer 39:5 But the army of the Chaldeans pursued them…
Jer 52:9 The Chaldeans seized the king and brought him up…

and see him eye to eye.

Zedekiah personally faced the king whose power he had opposed. His capture and judgment showed that neither political maneuvering nor escape could overturn God’s declared purpose.

Jer 34:3 And you yourself will not escape his grasp,…
Jer 39:7 Then he put out Zedekiah’s eyes and bound him…
2Ki 25:7 And they slaughtered the sons of Zedekiah before his eyes.…

He will take Zedekiah to Babylon,

Nebuchadnezzar captured Zedekiah after Jerusalem fell and brought him to Babylon, ending Judah’s monarchy in Jerusalem. Babylon served as the instrument of God’s judgment on Judah’s rebellion.

2Ki 25:7 And they slaughtered the sons of Zedekiah before his eyes.…
Ezk 12:13 But I will spread My net over him, and he will be caught…
Jer 21:7 ‘After that,’ declares the LORD, ‘I will hand over……

where he will stay until I attend to him, declares the LORD.

Zedekiah remained in Babylon after being blinded by the Babylonians, living there until his death. His fate demonstrated that God’s judgment would be carried out exactly as announced.

Jer 27:22 ‘They will be carried to Babylon and will remain there’…
Jer 52:11 Then he put out Zedekiah’s eyes, bound him…
Jer 29:10 For this is what the LORD says: When Babylon’s seventy years…

If you fight against the Chaldeans, you will not succeed.’”

Resistance to Babylon could not alter God’s determined judgment. The Chaldean army would prevail because the fall of Jerusalem had been decreed.

Jer 21:9 Whoever stays in this city will die by sword and famine…
Jer 38:17-18 Then Jeremiah said to Zedekiah, “This is what the LORD God…
Jer 27:8 As for the nation or kingdom that does not serve…

Jeremiah replied,

While Jerusalem was under Babylonian siege and Jeremiah was confined in the courtyard of the guard, he received a message from God concerning events that would unfold in the midst of Judah’s national collapse. His words introduced a divine instruction that would give visible assurance of future restoration.

Jer 37:17 Later, King Zedekiah sent for Jeremiah and received him…
Jer 42:4 “I have heard you,” replied Jeremiah the prophet.”…
1Ki 22:14 As surely as the LORD lives, I will speak…

“The word of the LORD came to me,

God directed Jeremiah personally, confirming that the coming command did not arise from human planning or optimism. Though judgment and exile were imminent, the Lord remained sovereign over Judah’s future.

Jer 1:4 The word of the LORD came to me, saying:
Ezk 1:3 The word of the LORD came directly to Ezekiel the priest…
Hos 1:1 This is the word of the LORD that came to Hosea son of Beeri…

saying:

God’s message would lead Jeremiah to purchase family land at Anathoth, a symbolic act declaring that houses, fields, and vineyards would again be possessed in the land after the exile.

2Sa 7:4 But that night the word of the LORD came to Nathan, saying,
1Ki 17:8 Then the word of the LORD came to Elijah:
1Ki 21:17 Then the word of the LORD came to Elijah the Tishbite…

Behold!

God calls Jeremiah to give careful attention to a message that will confirm His purpose amid Jerusalem’s crisis.

Zec 9:9 Rejoice greatly, O Daughter of Zion! Shout in triumph…
Isa 7:14 Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign:…
Gen 18:10 Then the LORD said, “I will surely return to you…

Hanamel, the son of your uncle Shallum,

Hanamel was Jeremiah’s cousin, making Jeremiah the nearest relative with responsibility to preserve family property.

Lev 25:49 either his uncle or cousin or any close relative…

is coming to you to say,

God reveals Hanamel’s coming request before it occurs, confirming that the transaction is directed by Him.

Rut 4:1-2 Meanwhile, Boaz went to the gate and sat down there.…
2Sa 12:1 Then the LORD sent Nathan to David, and when he arrived,…

‘Buy for yourself my field in Anathoth,

The field lay in Jeremiah’s hometown in Benjamin, then threatened by Babylon’s advancing forces. Purchasing it during the siege would appear impractical, yet it would publicly testify that Judah’s land would again be inhabited and possessed.

Rut 4:3-4 And he said to the kinsman-redeemer, “Naomi,…
Gen 23:16-18 Abraham agreed to Ephron’s terms and weighed out……
1Ki 21:2-3 So Ahab said to Naboth, “Give me your vineyard…

Israel’s inheritance laws gave the nearest kinsman the right to redeem family land so it would remain within the clan. Jeremiah’s purchase would demonstrate God’s promise to restore His people to the land after judgment.

Rut 4:9-10 At this, Boaz said to the elders and all the people,…
Lev 27:24 In the Year of Jubilee the field shall return to the one…

Then, as the LORD had said,

Hanamel’s arrival confirmed the instruction Jeremiah had received from God. Even while Jerusalem was under siege and Jeremiah was confined, the Lord directed events according to His purpose.

1Ki 8:56 Blessed be the LORD, who has given rest to His people Israel…
Jos 21:45 Not one of all the LORD’s good promises to the house of Israel…

my cousin Hanamel came to me

Hanamel was Jeremiah’s relative and brought a lawful family matter before him. His appearance demonstrated that the predicted transaction was not merely symbolic but occurred in ordinary historical circumstances.

in the courtyard of the guard

Jeremiah remained under guard by order of King Zedekiah because he had proclaimed Jerusalem’s coming fall to Babylon. His imprisonment did not prevent the Lord from carrying out His word.

Jer 37:21 So King Zedekiah gave orders for Jeremiah to be placed…
Jer 38:13 and they pulled him up with the ropes and lifted him…

and urged me, ‘Please buy my field in Anathoth

The field lay near Jeremiah’s hometown in Benjamin, an area soon to be occupied by Babylon. Purchasing land there appeared impractical during the invasion, yet it served as a public sign that the land would one day again be possessed.

in the land of Benjamin,

Benjamin belonged to Judah’s remaining territory and stood directly in the path of Babylon’s campaign against Jerusalem. The threatened loss of the land made the purchase an act grounded in God’s promised restoration.

Hanamel’s request gave Jeremiah the opportunity to obey the Lord through a visible act of confidence that Israel would return after judgment.

1Ki 21:2-3 So Ahab said to Naboth, “Give me your vineyard…

Then I knew that this was the word of the LORD.

The fulfillment of God’s earlier instruction confirmed to Jeremiah that Hanamel’s request came according to the Lord’s purpose.

The silver was weighed as a formal payment, completing a lawful transaction. By investing in land when Judah faced exile, Jeremiah acted on God’s promise that houses, fields, and vineyards would again be possessed in the land.

Jeremiah Prays for Understanding

After I had given the deed of purchase to Baruch son of Neriah,

Jeremiah had purchased the field at Anathoth while Jerusalem was under Babylonian siege, obeying the LORD’s command as a sign that the land would one day again be possessed by God’s people. Baruch, Jeremiah’s faithful scribe, received the deed as the legal witness and custodian of the transaction. The purchase of Hanamel’s field at Anathoth was a real legal transaction carried out during the Babylonian siege. By investing in land that seemed certain to fall under enemy control, Jeremiah acted on God’s promise that Judah would one day be restored.

The LORD Answers Jeremiah

Then the word of the LORD came to Jeremiah:

During Jerusalem’s siege by Babylon, God answered Jeremiah’s prayer concerning the land he had purchased at Anathoth. The message affirmed God’s sovereign power over Judah’s judgment and its future restoration. Jeremiah spoke as the Lord’s appointed prophet, receiving God’s revelation and declaring it faithfully to a nation facing captivity.

Jer 11:1 This is the word that came to Jeremiah from the LORD:
Jer 18:1 This is the word that came to Jeremiah from the LORD:
Jer 7:1 This is the word that came to Jeremiah from the LORD…

“Behold, I am the LORD,

God identifies Himself as the covenant God of Israel, whose authority does not diminish amid Jerusalem’s siege or Judah’s coming exile.

Exo 6:2 God also told Moses, “I am the LORD.
Isa 45:5 I am the LORD, and there is no other; there is no God but Me…

the God of all flesh.

Every nation, king, and army remains under His rule, including Babylon, whom He would use to judge Judah.

Num 16:22 But Moses and Aaron fell facedown and said, “O God,…
Num 27:16 May the LORD, the God of the spirits of all flesh,…

Is anything too difficult for Me?

The question answers Jeremiah’s concern over the future of the land after he purchased a field during the Babylonian siege: God could both bring judgment and restore His people to their inheritance.

Gen 18:14 Is anything too difficult for the LORD?…
Luk 1:37 For no word from God will ever fail.”

Therefore this is what the LORD says:

God announces His settled judgment through Jeremiah, speaking with the authority of Israel’s covenant Lord.

Jer 34:17 Therefore this is what the LORD says: You have not obeyed Me…
Jer 25:8 Therefore this is what the LORD of Hosts says:…
Ezk 11:5 And the Spirit of the LORD fell upon me…

Behold, I am about to deliver this city

Jerusalem’s fall is not merely the result of military events but the outworking of God’s judgment on Judah’s persistent rebellion and idolatry.

Jer 34:2 The LORD, the God of Israel, told Jeremiah to go…
Jer 38:3 This is what the LORD says: This city will surely…
Jer 21:10 For I have set My face against this city…

The Babylonian forces would become the instrument of that judgment, overrunning Judah and bringing its capital under foreign control.

The outcome was certain. Jerusalem would fall, marking the end of Judah’s kingdom and the beginning of the Babylonian exile.

And the Chaldeans who are fighting against this city

The Babylonian army under Nebuchadnezzar II was besieging Jerusalem as Jeremiah spoke. Their advance fulfilled God’s warnings that Judah’s persistent rebellion would bring foreign invasion and judgment.

2Ch 36:17 So He brought up against them the king of the Chaldeans,…

Jerusalem would fall and be burned after its capture in 586 BC. The destruction of the city and temple marked the collapse of Judah’s kingdom and the beginning of the Babylonian exile.

Jer 34:2 The LORD, the God of Israel, told Jeremiah to go…
2Ch 36:19 Then the Chaldeans set fire to the house of God…

along with the houses of those who provoked Me to anger

God’s judgment reached the homes of Jerusalem’s inhabitants because their rebellion was deliberate and widespread. Their losses reflected the consequences of breaking the covenant and rejecting His commands.

2Ki 21:15 because they have done evil in My sight…

Idolatrous worship had entered daily life throughout Jerusalem. Families used their rooftops for offerings to Baal, openly replacing devotion to the Lord with the practices of surrounding nations.

2Ki 23:5 Josiah also did away with the idolatrous priests…
Zep 1:5 those who bow on the rooftops to worship the host of heaven…

Offerings intended for the worship of the Lord were given to false gods. Judah’s idolatry was a direct rejection of God and a central cause of the coming judgment.

For the children of Israel and of Judah

Both the northern kingdom of Israel and the southern kingdom of Judah shared a long record of covenant unfaithfulness after the division of the united monarchy. Israel fell to Assyria in 722 BC, and Judah was later taken by Babylon in 586 BC.

2Ki 17:13 Yet through all His prophets and seers, the LORD…

Ezk 23:4 The older was named Oholah, and her sister…

Gen 8:21 When the LORD smelled the pleasing aroma,…
Gen 6:5 Then the LORD saw that the wickedness of man…

indeed, they have done nothing but provoke Me to anger

Their sins were not isolated failures but continued offenses against the Lord’s holiness and the covenant He had made with them. Idolatry, injustice, and rejection of God’s commands brought His righteous judgment upon both kingdoms.

2Ki 17:11 They burned incense on all the high places…
Jer 7:19 But am I the One they are provoking? declares the LORD.…
Deu 9:7 Remember this, and never forget how you provoked the LORD…

Much of their provocation centered on idols fashioned by human hands and honored in place of the Creator. The people adopted the false worship of surrounding nations despite God’s clear command to worship Him alone.

Jer 10:3-5 For the customs of the peoples are worthless;…
Psa 115:4 Their idols are silver and gold, made by the hands of men.

declares the LORD.

The coming judgment was not Jeremiah’s personal warning but the certain word of the Lord, who had witnessed the nation’s rebellion and would hold it accountable.

Jer 23:24 Can a man hide in secret places where I cannot see him?…
Zec 1:3 So tell the people that this is what the LORD of Hosts says:…
Ezk 36:36 Then the nations around you that remain will know…

For this city has aroused My wrath and fury

Jerusalem had become a center of persistent idolatry, injustice, and rebellion despite its place as the city of David and the location of the temple. Its people repeatedly turned from the Lord to worship false gods and followed the sinful practices of surrounding nations.

Jer 7:20 Therefore this is what the Lord GOD says: Behold, My anger…
Jer 21:5 And I Myself will fight against you with a mighty arm…
2Ch 34:25 because they have forsaken Me and burned incense…

from the day it was built until now.

From David’s capture of Jerusalem onward, the city’s history included recurring unfaithfulness under many of its kings and leaders. Even the reforms of faithful rulers did not permanently remove the nation’s tendency toward idolatry and disobedience.

Jer 7:25-26 From the day your fathers came out of Egypt…
1Sa 8:8 Just as they have done from the day I brought them up…
Deu 9:24 You have been rebelling against the LORD…

Therefore I will remove it from My presence

God’s judgment would result in Jerusalem’s destruction and the exile of its people by Babylon in 586 BC. Removal from His presence meant the loss of His protecting favor and the devastation of the city that had profaned His name.

Jer 23:39 therefore I will surely forget you and will cast you out…
2Ki 24:3-4 Surely this happened to Judah at the LORD’s command,…
2Ki 23:27 For the LORD had said, “I will remove Judah from My sight…

because of all the evil the children of Israel and of Judah have done to provoke Me to anger—

Both kingdoms repeatedly broke the covenant through idolatry, injustice, and open rebellion against the Lord. Israel had already fallen to Assyria, yet Judah continued in many of the same sins.

Jer 11:17 The LORD of Hosts, who planted you, has decreed disaster…
2Ki 17:7-18 All this happened because the people of Israel had sinned…
2Ki 21:10-15 And the LORD spoke through His servants, saying…

they, their kings, their officials, their priests and prophets,

The guilt extended from the throne to the temple and into public life. Kings such as Manasseh promoted idolatry, officials practiced corruption, and many priests and prophets supported false worship or spoke falsely in the Lord’s name.

Ezk 22:25-28 The conspiracy of the princes in her midst…
Jer 5:30-31 A horrible and shocking thing has happened in the land.…

the men of Judah, and the residents of Jerusalem.

Judah’s people and Jerusalem’s inhabitants shared responsibility for the nation’s rebellion. Jerusalem, where the Lord’s temple stood, had become a center of unfaithfulness rather than the faithful worship God required.

Jer 11:9-10 And the LORD told me, “There is a conspiracy…
Jer 25:4-7 And the LORD has sent all His servants the prophets to you…
Jer 7:17-19 Do you not see what they are doing in the cities of Judah…

They have turned their backs to Me and not their faces.

Judah deliberately rejected the LORD, choosing idolatry and covenant unfaithfulness instead of worship and obedience. Though God had revealed Himself through His law, His temple, and His prophets, the people treated Him with contempt.

Jer 2:27 say to a tree, ‘You are my father,’ and to a stone…
2Ch 29:6 For our fathers were unfaithful and did evil…
Ezk 8:16 So He brought me to the inner court of the house of the LORD…

Though I taught them again and again,

The LORD patiently instructed them over many generations, sending prophets to warn them, expose their sin, and call them to return. Jeremiah’s ministry stood within this long record of divine mercy toward a nation bent on rebellion.

They have placed their abominations

Judah adopted the detestable idol worship of surrounding nations, bringing images and practices associated with false gods into its own life. Such rebellion openly rejected the Lord’s covenant and His exclusive claim on His people.

Ezk 8:5-6 “Son of man,” He said to me, “now lift up your eyes…
2Ki 21:7 Manasseh even took the carved Asherah pole he had made…
2Ch 33:7 Manasseh even took the carved image he had made…

in the house that bears My Name,

The temple in Jerusalem had been set apart as the place bearing the Lord’s name, signifying his ownership and presence among Israel. Rather than honoring its holiness, the people used it to accommodate idolatry.

Jer 7:30 For the people of Judah have done evil in My sight,…
1Ki 8:29 May Your eyes be open toward this temple night and day,…
2Ch 6:33 Then may You hear from heaven, Your dwelling place…

and so have defiled it.

Their actions defiled—made unclean or impure—the sanctuary and displayed the wider unfaithfulness of the nation. By corrupting the temple, Judah provoked the judgment that would culminate in Jerusalem’s destruction and exile.

Ezk 5:11 Therefore as surely as I live, declares the Lord GOD,…

A Promise of Restoration

Now therefore, about this city

Jerusalem, Judah’s capital and the site of the Temple and David’s throne, lay under Babylonian siege as Jeremiah spoke.

Jer 19:8 I will make this city a desolation and…
Jer 6:6 For this is what the LORD of Hosts says:…
Lam 1:1 How lonely lies the city, once so full of people!…

of which you say, ‘It will be delivered into the hand of the king of Babylon

The people understood that Nebuchadnezzar and his armies would capture the city, fulfilling the warnings God had given through Jeremiah.

Jer 21:10 For I have set My face against this city…
Jer 27:6 So now I have placed all these lands under the authority…
2Ch 36:17 So He brought up against them the king of the Chaldeans,…

by sword and famine and plague,’

Warfare, starvation within the siege, and disease would bring widespread death and demonstrate the judgment brought by Judah’s persistent rebellion.

Jer 14:12 Although they may fast, I will not listen to their cry;…
Jer 21:7 ‘After that,’ declares the LORD, ‘I will hand over……
Jer 24:10 And I will send against them sword and famine and plague…

this is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says:

The Lord remained sovereign over Jerusalem’s fall and over Israel’s future, speaking as the covenant God who would judge His people yet preserve His purposes for them.

Jer 7:3 Thus says the LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel:…
Jer 19:3 Hear the word of the LORD, O kings of Judah…
Jer 35:13 This is what the LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel, says:…

I will surely gather My people

God pledges to restore Israel after the judgment of exile, demonstrating His continuing covenant faithfulness.

Jer 31:10 Hear, O nations, the word of the LORD, and proclaim it…
Deu 30:3 He will restore you from captivity and have compassion…
Ezk 11:17 Therefore declare that this is what the Lord GOD says:…

from all the lands to which I have banished them

Israel’s dispersion followed persistent idolatry and rebellion, including the Assyrian and Babylonian exiles.

Ezk 20:34 With a strong hand, an outstretched arm, and outpoured wrath…
Deu 30:4 Even if you have been banished to the farthest horizon,…
Lev 26:33 But I will scatter you among the nations…

in My furious anger and great wrath,

Their exile was the righteous consequence of breaking God’s covenant, not an arbitrary act of judgment.

Jer 21:5 And I Myself will fight against you with a mighty arm…
Deu 29:28 The LORD uprooted them from their land in His anger…
2Ki 17:18 So the LORD was very angry with Israel…

and I will return them to this place

God promises a real return to the land He gave to Abraham’s descendants, fulfilled in part after Babylon and pointing toward Israel’s full restoration.

Jer 16:15 Instead they will say, ‘As surely as the LORD lives,…
Ezk 36:24 For I will take you from among the nations…
Deu 30:5 And the LORD your God will bring you into the land…

and make them dwell in safety.

The restored people will live securely under God’s rule, anticipating the peace of Messiah’s kingdom.

Deu 33:28 So Israel dwells securely; the fountain of Jacob lives…
Jer 33:16 In those days Judah will be saved, and Jerusalem will dwell…
Ezk 34:28 They will no longer be prey for the nations…

They will be My people,

God promises to restore Israel after exile and renew the covenant bond that sin and judgment had disrupted. The gathered remnant will again belong to Him as a distinct nation, living under His rule in the land He gave their fathers. The restoration looks beyond return from Babylon to the fuller covenant renewal God would accomplish through the Messiah.

Lev 26:12 I will walk among you and be your God,…
Ezk 37:23 They will no longer defile themselves with their idols…
Hos 2:23 And I will sow her as My own in the land…

and I will be their God.

The Lord pledges His faithful presence, protection, and rule over His restored people. Though Jerusalem faced destruction because of Judah’s rebellion, God would not abandon His covenant purposes. His promise reaches its final fulfillment when He dwells permanently with His redeemed people in the new creation.

Jer 31:33 “But this is the covenant I will make”…
Ezk 36:28 Then you will live in the land that I gave your forefathers;…
Heb 8:10 For this is the covenant I will make with the house…

I will give them one heart and one way,

God promised to restore His scattered people with a shared devotion to Him and a common pattern of obedient living. Their future security would not rest on political strength but on hearts turned toward the Lord and lives ordered by His covenant.

Ezk 11:19-20 And I will give them singleness of heart…
Ezk 36:27 And I will put My Spirit within you and cause you…
Deu 10:12 And now, O Israel, what does the LORD your God ask of you…

so that they will always fear Me

Reverence for God would mark the restored community. Israel’s past unfaithfulness had brought judgment and exile, but God would establish a lasting disposition of awe and obedience among them.

Deu 5:29 If only they had such a heart to fear Me…
Deu 14:23 And you are to eat a tenth of your grain, new wine,…
Deu 17:19 It is to remain with him, and he is to read from it…

for their own good

The Lord’s commands were not burdensome demands but the path of protection, stability, and blessing for His people. Their welfare depended on remaining faithful to the God who had redeemed and preserved them.

Deu 10:13 and to keep the commandments and statutes of the LORD…
Deu 6:24 And the LORD commanded us to observe all these statutes…
Deu 5:33 You must walk in all the ways that the LORD your God…

and for the good of their children after them.

God’s restoration would extend beyond those returning from exile. Their descendants would benefit from a renewed covenant faithfulness, receiving the lasting blessings of a people who fear the Lord.

Deu 4:40 Keep His statutes and commandments, which I am giving you…
Deu 12:28 Be careful to obey all these things I command you,…
Pro 13:22 A good man leaves an inheritance to his children’s children,…

I will make an everlasting covenant with them:

God promises a covenant that will not fail or expire. Unlike the Mosaic covenant, which exposed Israel’s sin and called for obedience under the law, this covenant rests on God’s faithfulness and provides lasting forgiveness, renewal, and fellowship with Him through the promised Messiah.

Gen 17:7 I will establish My covenant as an everlasting covenant…
Isa 55:3 Incline your ear and come to Me; listen,…
Ezk 37:26 And I will make a covenant of peace with them;…

I will never turn away from doing good to them,

Even after Judah’s exile, God’s purposes for His people remained merciful. His discipline would not cancel His commitment to restore, preserve, and bless those whom He had chosen.

Psa 119:68 You are good, and You do what is good; teach me Your statutes…
Psa 84:11 For the LORD God is a sun and a shield;…
Psa 23:6 Surely goodness and mercy will follow me…

and I will put My fear in their hearts,

God would change His people inwardly, giving them a reverent knowledge of His holiness and authority. Their obedience would flow from hearts renewed by Him rather than from external pressure alone.

Psa 86:11 Teach me Your way, O LORD, that I may walk in Your truth.…
Jer 31:33 “But this is the covenant I will make”…
Deu 30:6 The LORD your God will circumcise your hearts…

so that they will never turn away from Me.

God’s work in their hearts would secure their continued relationship with Him. He not only calls His people to faithfulness but also sustains them, keeping them from final abandonment of the covenant.

Jhn 10:27-28 My sheep listen to My voice; I know them…
1Pe 1:5 who through faith are shielded by God’s power…
Jud 1:24 Now to Him who is able to keep you from stumbling…

Yes, I will rejoice in doing them good,

God’s restoration of Judah would arise from His settled purpose to bless His covenant people after the judgment of exile. Though He had disciplined them for persistent rebellion, He had not abandoned them.

Deu 30:9 So the LORD your God will make you abound…
Zep 3:17 The LORD your God is among you; He is mighty to save.…
Isa 62:5 For as a young man marries a young woman,…

and I will faithfully plant them in this land

The returned exiles would be established again in the land promised to their fathers. Their renewed presence in Judah would rest on God’s faithfulness rather than their own strength, providing real security after the devastation of Babylonian conquest.

Amo 9:15 I will firmly plant them in their own land…
Jer 24:6 I will build them up and not tear them down…
2Sa 7:10 And I will provide a place for My people Israel…

with all My heart and with all My soul.

God declares His complete and personal commitment to their restoration. The promise reveals the depth of His covenant love and anticipates the fuller peace and renewal accomplished under the reign of the Messiah.

Deu 4:29 But if from there you will seek the LORD your God,…
Jos 22:5 But be very careful to observe the commandment and the law…
2Ki 23:25 Neither before nor after Josiah was there any king…

For this is what the LORD says:

Jeremiah delivers God’s own declaration, grounding both judgment and restoration in His authority.

Exo 9:13 Then the LORD said to Moses, “Get up early in the morning…
2Ki 19:20 Then Isaiah son of Amoz sent a message to Hezekiah:…
Isa 37:21 Then Isaiah son of Amoz sent a message to Hezekiah:…

Just as I have brought all this great disaster on this people,

The destruction of Jerusalem and the Babylonian exile came as God’s judgment for Judah’s long rebellion, idolatry, and refusal to heed His warnings.

Deu 32:23 I will heap disasters upon them; I will spend My arrows…
2Ki 21:12 this is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says:…
Isa 45:7 I form the light and create the darkness;…

so I will bring on them all the good I have promised them.

God would also fulfill His promises to restore His people, bring them back to the land, rebuild their lives, and renew their covenant relationship with Him.

1Ki 8:56 Blessed be the LORD, who has given rest to His people Israel…
Jos 21:45 Not one of all the LORD’s good promises to the house of Israel…
Jer 29:10 For this is what the LORD says: When Babylon’s seventy years…

And fields will be bought in this land

God promises that Judah’s devastation will not be permanent. Land transactions, which assume security, settled communities, and productive agriculture, will resume after the exile. Jeremiah’s purchase of a field serves as a visible pledge that homes, vineyards, and farms will again belong to the people of Judah.

Ezk 36:33-35 This is what the Lord GOD says: On the day I cleanse you…
Isa 65:21-22 They will build houses and dwell in them;…
Amo 9:14-15 I will restore My people Israel from captivity;…

about which you are saying, ‘It is a desolation,

Judah’s present condition resulted from God’s judgment upon persistent rebellion. Cities were falling, fields were abandoned, and the land that had supported Israel’s life was being stripped of its inhabitants. Yet the destruction did not cancel God’s covenant purposes.

Lev 26:34-35 Then the land shall enjoy its Sabbaths.…
2Ch 36:21 So the land enjoyed its Sabbath rest all the days…
Jer 25:11 And this whole land will become a desolate wasteland…

without man or beast;

War had emptied the countryside of people and livestock, leaving cultivated land untended and settlements deserted. The extent of the ruin made the promised renewal appear impossible by human judgment.

Ezk 29:11 No foot of man or beast will pass through,…
Ezk 14:13 Son of man, if a land sins against Me…
Jer 4:25 I looked, and no man was left; all the birds of the air…

it has been delivered into the hands of the Chaldeans.’

Babylon had conquered Judah because the Lord had given the nation into its power. The Chaldeans were not acting outside His control, and their victory would not be final. Though Judah would endure exile, God would bring His people back and restore the land.

Jer 27:6 So now I have placed all these lands under the authority…
2Ki 24:2 And the LORD sent Chaldean, Aramean, Moabite…
2Ch 36:17 So He brought up against them the king of the Chaldeans,…

Fields will be purchased with silver,

Even as Babylon’s armies closed in on Judah, Jeremiah declared that fields would again be purchased with silver. Families would return to live, work, and inherit property in the land.

Gen 23:16-18 Abraham agreed to Ephron’s terms and weighed out……
Rut 4:3-4 And he said to the kinsman-redeemer, “Naomi,…
2Sa 24:24 So David bought the threshing floor and the oxen…

and deeds will be signed, sealed, and witnessed

Jeremiah’s purchase of a field demonstrated publicly that Judah’s restoration was certain. In accordance with Judah’s legal customs, deeds would be signed, sealed, and witnessed.

Neh 10:1 Now these were the ones who sealed the document:…
Est 8:8-10 Now you may write in the king’s name regarding the Jews,…
Rut 4:7-11 Now in former times in Israel, concerning the redemption…

in the land of Benjamin,

The land of Benjamin lay north of Jerusalem and had long been closely associated with Judah.

Jos 18:11-28 The first lot came up for the clans of the tribe of Benjamin…
1Sa 9:1-2 Now there was a Benjamite, a powerful man,…
2Ch 11:10 Zorah, Aijalon, and Hebron, the fortified cities…

in the areas surrounding Jerusalem,

“The areas surrounding Jerusalem” included the towns and farmland of Benjamin, Judah’s hill country, the western foothills, and the Negev. These communities, though threatened by the Babylonian siege and coming destruction, would one day again see fields bought, sold, and cultivated.

Jer 17:26 And people will come from the cities of Judah…
Neh 12:27-29 At the dedication of the wall of Jerusalem…
Jos 15:8-9 From there the border went up the Valley of Ben-hinnom…

and in the cities of Judah—

The phrase “and in the cities of Judah” refers to the entire kingdom, which would be emptied by exile but later repopulated.

Jos 15:21-63 These were the southernmost cities of Judah in the Negev…
2Ch 11:5-12 Rehoboam lived in Jerusalem, and he built up cities…
2Ch 14:6-7 Because the land was at peace, Asa built fortified cities…

the cities of the hill country, the foothills, and the Negev—

The phrase encompasses Judah’s fertile highlands, its western lowlands, and its southern desert region, emphasizing that restoration would extend to every part of the land.

Jos 15:48-62 These were in the hill country: Shamir, Jattir, Socoh,…
Jos 10:40-42 So Joshua conquered the whole region—the hill country…
Jdg 1:9 Afterward, the men of Judah marched down to fight…

because I will restore them from captivity, declares the LORD.”

Judah would be taken to Babylon for its rebellion, yet the exile would not be permanent. The LORD Himself would bring His people back and reestablish them in their land.

Jer 30:3-4 For behold, the days are coming, declares the LORD…
Deu 30:3-5 He will restore you from captivity and have compassion…
Ezr 1:1-4 In the first year of Cyrus king of Persia,…
