Matthew 12
Berean Study Bible

The Lord of the Sabbath

At that time

Jesus’ ministry in Galilee had drawn increasing attention, including opposition from the Pharisees.

Mrk 2:23-24 One Sabbath Jesus was passing through the grainfields,…
Luk 6:1-2 One Sabbath Jesus was passing through the grainfields…

Jesus went through the grainfields

Traveling with His disciples, He passed through fields of ripened grain in the agricultural countryside.

Deu 23:25 When you enter your neighbor’s grainfield, you may pluck…
Rut 2:2-3 And Ruth the Moabitess said to Naomi, “Please let me go…
Rut 2:7 She has said, ‘Please let me glean and gather…

on the Sabbath.

The Sabbath was set apart by God as a day of rest and worship, yet religious leaders had added detailed restrictions beyond the Law’s requirements.

Exo 20:8-10 Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy.…
Deu 5:12-15 Observe the Sabbath day by keeping it holy,…
Exo 31:15 For six days work may be done, but the seventh day…

His disciples were hungry

Their need was immediate and ordinary, reflecting the simplicity of their life with Jesus.

1Sa 30:11-12 Now his men found an Egyptian in the field…
Mat 4:2 After fasting forty days and forty nights, He was hungry.
Gen 25:29-34 One day, while Jacob was cooking some stew,…

and began to pick the heads of grain

The Law permitted travelers to take grain by hand from another person’s field, but the Pharisees treated this act as harvesting when done on the Sabbath.

Lev 19:9-10 When you reap the harvest of your land, you are not to…
Deu 24:19 If you are harvesting in your field and forget a sheaf…
Rut 2:15-17 When Ruth got up to glean, Boaz ordered his young men…

and eat them.

What was a lawful response to hunger became the occasion for a dispute over the true purpose of the Sabbath and the authority of Jesus.

1Sa 21:6 So the priest gave him the consecrated bread,…
Rut 2:14 At mealtime Boaz said to her, “Come over here;…
2Ki 4:42-44 Now a man from Baal-shalishah came to the man of God…

When the Pharisees saw this,

The Pharisees were influential religious leaders who closely guarded Sabbath observance and the traditions developed around the Law. They had been watching Jesus’ ministry and His disciples’ conduct.

Mrk 2:23 One Sabbath Jesus was passing through the grainfields,…
Luk 6:1 One Sabbath Jesus was passing through the grainfields…

they said to Him,

They addressed Jesus as responsible for those who followed Him, turning the disciples’ actions into a challenge to His authority.

Mrk 2:24 So the Pharisees said to Him, “Look, why are they doing…
Luk 6:2 But some of the Pharisees asked, “Why are you doing…

“Look, Your disciples are doing

Their objection focused on the public actions of Jesus’ followers and treated their conduct as evidence against Him.

Mat 15:2 “Why do Your disciples break the tradition of the elders?”…
Mrk 7:2 and they saw some of His disciples eating…

what is unlawful on the Sabbath.”

The disciples had plucked grain to satisfy hunger, an act permitted for travelers, but the Pharisees regarded plucking as a form of reaping and therefore forbidden on the Sabbath. Their accusation rested on their strict interpretation of Sabbath regulations rather than on any act of theft or disregard for God’s command.

Exo 20:10 but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the LORD your God,…
Deu 5:14 the seventh day is a Sabbath to the LORD your God,…
Jer 17:21 This is what the LORD says: Take heed for yourselves;…

Jesus replied,

Jesus answered the Pharisees’ accusation by appealing to Scripture and exposing the weakness of their Sabbath interpretation.

Mat 4:4 But Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not…”…
Luk 4:4 But Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live…”…

“Have you not read

He addressed men known for their knowledge of the Law, calling them to consider what Scripture actually teaches.

Mat 19:4 Jesus answered, “Have you not read that from the beginning…

what David did

David, Israel’s anointed king, had acted under pressing need without being condemned by God.

1Sa 21:1-2 Then David came to Nob, to Ahimelech the priest.…
Luk 6:3-4 Jesus replied, “Have you not read what David did……

when he and his companions were hungry?

Hunger drove David and his men to eat the consecrated bread, showing that God’s law was not given to deny mercy or necessary provision.

1Sa 21:3-6 Now then, what do you have on hand? Give me five loaves…
Mrk 2:25-26 Jesus replied, “Have you never read what David did……

He entered the house of God,

David went to the tabernacle at Nob, where Ahimelech served as priest. Fleeing from Saul, David sought food for himself and the men with him.

Mrk 2:25-26 Jesus replied, “Have you never read what David did……
Luk 6:3-4 Jesus replied, “Have you not read what David did……
1Sa 21:1-2 Then David came to Nob, to Ahimelech the priest.…

and he and his companions

David’s need was shared by those who had joined him in his flight. Their hunger formed the setting for Ahimelech’s decision.

1Sa 21:4-5 “There is no common bread on hand,” the priest replied,…
1Sa 22:1-2 So David left Gath and took refuge in the cave of Adullam.…

ate the consecrated bread,

The bread of the Presence had been set before the Lord and was ordinarily eaten by the priests after it was replaced. Ahimelech gave it to David because no other bread was available.

1Sa 21:6 So the priest gave him the consecrated bread,…
Lev 24:5-8 You are also to take fine flour and bake twelve loaves…
Exo 25:30 And place the Bread of the Presence on the table…

which was not lawful for them to eat,

The law reserved this bread for the priests, marking it as holy. Yet David’s urgent need did not make his action a defiant rejection of God’s command.

Lev 22:10 No one outside a priest’s family may eat the offering,…
Exo 29:33 They must eat those things by which atonement was made…
Ezk 44:29 They shall eat the grain offerings, the sin offerings,…

but only for the priests.

Jesus cites this event to show that mercy and genuine human necessity are not opposed to God’s purposes.

Lev 24:9 It belongs to Aaron and his sons, who are to eat it…
Num 18:9-10 A portion of the most holy offerings reserved from the fire…
Exo 29:32 At the entrance to the Tent of Meeting, Aaron and his sons…

Or haven’t you read in the Law

Jesus appeals to the Scriptures the Pharisees claimed to know and uphold. The Law, especially the books of Moses, revealed that God’s commands were never meant to be applied without regard for their purpose.

Deu 31:11-12 when all Israel comes before the LORD your God…
Luk 10:26 “What is written in the Law?” Jesus replied.…
Neh 8:8 So they read from the Book of the Law of God, explaining it…

that on the Sabbath the priests in the temple break the Sabbath

Every Sabbath, priests performed the required sacrifices and maintained the temple service. Their duties involved labor, yet God Himself commanded this work as part of Israel’s worship.

Num 28:9-10 On the Sabbath day, present two unblemished lambs…
Lev 24:5-8 You are also to take fine flour and bake twelve loaves…
Ezk 46:1-4 This is what the Lord GOD says: ‘The gate of the inner court…

and yet are innocent?

The priests were not guilty because their service fulfilled God’s will. Their example shows that Sabbath observance did not forbid necessary work appointed by God, and that the Pharisees’ rigid judgment ignored the Law’s own priorities.

Mrk 2:27 Then Jesus declared, “The Sabbath was made for man,…

The Sabbath was given for rest, worship, and mercy, not as a burden enforced by man-made restrictions. Jesus’ authority over it exposed the Pharisees’ legalism and affirmed that doing good and meeting genuine need honored God’s law.

Jesus Heals on the Sabbath

Moving on from there,

Jesus continued His public ministry after confronting the Pharisees over their Sabbath accusations. His movement from place to place reflects the active course of His teaching and the growing opposition He faced.

Mat 11:1 After Jesus had finished instructing His twelve disciples…
Mat 15:29 Moving on from there, Jesus went along the Sea of Galilee.…
Mat 14:13 When Jesus heard about John, He withdrew by boat…

Jesus entered their synagogue,

Jesus entered the synagogue where Jews gathered for Scripture reading, prayer, and instruction. The phrase highlights the contrast between Jesus and the religious leaders who held influence there. In this setting, He again exposed their distorted treatment of the Sabbath, showing that mercy and doing good accord with God’s law.

Mrk 3:1 Once again Jesus entered the synagogue,…
Luk 6:6 On another Sabbath Jesus entered the synagogue…
Mrk 1:21 Then Jesus and His companions went to Capernaum,…

and a man with a withered hand was there.

The man’s disabled hand would have limited his work and daily life. He was present in the synagogue as Jesus taught, placing his need before the religious leaders and the people gathered there.

Mrk 3:1 Once again Jesus entered the synagogue,…
Luk 6:6 On another Sabbath Jesus entered the synagogue…
1Ki 13:4-6 Now when King Jeroboam, who was at the altar in Bethel,…

In order to accuse Jesus, they asked Him,

“Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath?”

The Law commanded rest on the Sabbath, but it did not forbid mercy or healing. The Pharisees treated healing as prohibited work, while Jesus upheld God’s purpose for the Sabbath by showing that doing good and relieving suffering accords with God’s will.

Luk 14:3 So Jesus asked the experts in the law and the Pharisees,…
Luk 13:14-16 But the synagogue leader was indignant that Jesus had healed…
Jhn 7:23 If a boy can be circumcised on the Sabbath…

He replied,

Jesus answered the Pharisees’ challenge with a question that exposed the inconsistency in their approach to Sabbath observance.

Mrk 3:4 And He asked them, “Which is lawful on the Sabbath:…
Luk 6:9 Then Jesus said to them, “I ask you, which is lawful…

“If one of you has a sheep

A sheep was valuable property and an essential part of daily life, providing wool, food, and offerings.

Luk 15:4-7 What man among you, if he has a hundred sheep…
1Sa 17:34-35 David replied, “Your servant has been tending…

and it falls into a pit on the Sabbath,

Such accidents were possible in the open fields and rocky terrain of Israel. The need was immediate, even though the day was set apart for rest.

Luk 14:5 And He asked them, “Which of you whose son or ox…
Luk 13:15-16 “You hypocrites!” the Lord replied. “Does not each of you…

will he not take hold of it and lift it out?

The expected answer was yes. Rescue was understood as a fitting act of mercy, showing that the Sabbath was not intended to prevent necessary care.

Deu 22:1-4 If you see your brother’s ox or sheep straying,…
Exo 23:5 If you see the donkey of one who hates you…

How much more valuable is a man than a sheep!

Jesus exposes the inconsistency of treating an animal’s rescue as permissible while denying help to a suffering person. Sheep were valuable property in Israel, yet human beings bear God’s image and hold a greater place in His creation. The need before Him was not a violation of Sabbath rest but an occasion for mercy.

Mat 6:26 Look at the birds of the air: They do not sow or reap…
Luk 12:7 And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered.…
Psa 8:5 You made him a little lower than the angels;…

Therefore it is lawful to do good on the Sabbath.”

Sabbath law was never intended to forbid acts of compassion or necessary help. Jesus affirms that doing good accords with God’s purpose for the day of rest and confronts traditions that placed restrictive rules above human need.

Mrk 3:4 And He asked them, “Which is lawful on the Sabbath:…
Luk 6:9 Then Jesus said to them, “I ask you, which is lawful…
Jhn 7:23 If a boy can be circumcised on the Sabbath…

Then Jesus said to the man,

Jesus addressed the disabled man openly in the synagogue, where the religious leaders were watching for grounds to accuse Him. His attention to the man displayed both compassion and authority.

Mrk 3:5 Jesus looked around at them with anger and sorrow…
Luk 6:10 And after looking around at all of them, He said…
Jhn 5:8 Then Jesus told him, “Get up, pick up your mat, and walk.”

“Stretch out your hand.”

Jesus commanded what the man could not do in his own strength, calling for a response of trust and obedience.

Exo 8:5 And the LORD said to Moses, “Tell Aaron, ‘Stretch out…
Exo 9:22 Then the LORD said to Moses, “Stretch out your hand…
Exo 14:16 And as for you, lift up your staff and stretch out your hand…

So he stretched it out,

The man immediately acted on Jesus’ word.

Exo 8:17 This they did, and when Aaron stretched out his hand…
Exo 14:21 Then Moses stretched out his hand over the sea,…

and it was restored to full use,

The healing was immediate, returning strength and function to the hand.

Jesus made the hand completely whole, leaving no trace of its former condition.

Exo 4:7 “Put your hand back inside your cloak,” said the LORD.…
Psa 119:73 Your hands have made me and fashioned me;…
Psa 139:14 I praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made.…

But the Pharisees went out

After Jesus healed the man with the withered hand on the Sabbath, the Pharisees left in anger. His authority over the Sabbath and His exposure of their hardened hearts threatened their influence as religious leaders.

Mrk 3:6 At this, the Pharisees went out and began plotting…
Mat 22:15 Then the Pharisees went out and conspired to trap Jesus…
Luk 6:11 But the scribes and Pharisees were filled with rage…

and plotted

Their opposition became deliberate and organized. Rather than reconsidering their accusations in light of Jesus’ miracle, they began seeking a way to remove Him.

Jhn 11:53 So from that day on they plotted to kill Him.
Mrk 14:1 Now the Passover and the Feast of Unleavened Bread…
Mat 26:4 and they conspired to arrest Jesus covertly and kill Him.

how they might kill Jesus.

Their plan revealed the depth of their rejection of Jesus and set in motion the growing hostility that would lead to His crucifixion.

Luk 22:2 and the chief priests and scribes were looking for a way…
Jhn 5:18 Because of this, the Jews tried all the harder to kill Him.…
Jhn 7:1 After this, Jesus traveled throughout Galilee.…

God’s Chosen Servant

Aware of this,

Jesus knew that the Pharisees were plotting to kill Him. Their growing hostility would not alter the course of His ministry, which would unfold according to the Father’s appointed time.

Mrk 12:15 But Jesus saw through their hypocrisy and said,…
Luk 6:8 But Jesus knew their thoughts and said to the man…

Jesus’ withdrawal and healing ministry unfolded according to God’s redemptive plan, fulfilling the messianic portrait given long before His coming. Matthew repeatedly shows that Jesus’ actions, character, and mission corresponded to God’s promises in Scripture.

A House Divided

Then a demon-possessed man who was blind and mute was brought to Jesus,

The man’s blindness and inability to speak were connected to demonic oppression, displaying the destructive effects of evil upon human life. Those who brought him recognized that Jesus alone had the authority to deliver and restore him.

Mat 15:30-31 Large crowds came to Him, bringing the lame, the blind…
Mat 9:32-33 As they were leaving, a demon-possessed man…
Luk 11:14 One day Jesus was driving out a demon that was mute.…

and He healed the man

Jesus drove out the demon and removed the physical afflictions associated with it. His act revealed His authority over demons, disease, and every power opposed to God’s reign.

The man was completely restored, able to see and speak at once. The miracle publicly demonstrated that God’s promised kingdom was present in the ministry of Jesus.

Isa 35:5-6 Then the eyes of the blind will be opened…
Mrk 7:35 Immediately the man’s ears were opened…
Jhn 9:7 Then he told him, “Go, wash in the Pool of Siloam”…

The crowds were astounded

Jesus had healed a demon-possessed man who was blind and mute, restoring both his sight and speech. The miracle displayed authority over physical suffering and demonic oppression, leading the people to recognize that His works exceeded ordinary human power.

Mat 9:33 And when the demon had been driven out, the man…
Mat 7:28 When Jesus had finished saying these things,…

and asked, “Could this be the Son of David?”

The crowd wondered whether Jesus was Israel’s promised Messiah, the royal descendant of David who would fulfill God’s covenant and reign forever. Their growing recognition of His identity intensified the opposition of the Pharisees, who refused to accept the evidence of His authority.

Luk 11:18-20 If Satan is divided against himself, how can his kingdom…

does this man drive out demons.”

Their accusation admitted that Jesus truly cast out demons, yet rejected the clear evidence that God’s kingdom had come through Him.

Mat 8:16 When evening came, many who were demon-possessed…
Mrk 1:34 And He healed many who were ill with various diseases…

Knowing their thoughts,

Jesus knew the Pharisees’ private reasoning and exposed the false basis of their accusation. Their charge that He cast out demons by Satan’s power ignored the evident work of God before them.

Mat 9:4 But Jesus knew what they were thinking and said,…
Jhn 2:24-25 But Jesus did not entrust Himself to them…

Jesus said to them,

He answered publicly, addressing both their accusation and its implications. Rather than avoiding their hostility, He showed that their conclusion was unreasonable.

Mrk 2:9-11 Which is easier: to say to a paralytic…
Luk 5:23-24 Which is easier: to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’…

“Every kingdom divided against itself will be laid waste,

Satan could not advance his own kingdom by driving out his own demons. A ruler whose forces work against one another cannot maintain power or accomplish a common purpose.

Mrk 3:24 If a kingdom is divided against itself, it cannot stand.
Luk 11:17 Knowing their thoughts, Jesus said to them, “Every kingdom…

and every city or household divided against itself will not stand.

The same principle applies at every level of life. Internal conflict destroys nations, communities, and families. Jesus used this plain reality to show that His deliverance of the demon-possessed revealed opposition to Satan’s kingdom, not cooperation with it.

Mrk 3:25 If a house is divided against itself, it cannot stand.
Psa 127:1 A song of ascents. Of Solomon. Unless the LORD builds…

If Satan drives out Satan,

Jesus answers the Pharisees’ claim that He cast out demons by Beelzebul’s power. Satan would not work against his own dominion by removing demons who serve his purposes.

Mrk 3:23 So Jesus called them together and began to speak to them…
Jhn 12:31 Now judgment is upon this world; now the prince…

he is divided against himself.

Satan’s kingdom is an organized opposition to God, and internal conflict would weaken its control rather than advance it.

Mrk 3:24 If a kingdom is divided against itself, it cannot stand.
Luk 11:17 Knowing their thoughts, Jesus said to them, “Every kingdom…

How then can his kingdom stand?

The accusation collapses under its own logic. Jesus’ authority over demons shows that God’s kingdom is confronting and overcoming Satan’s power.

Mrk 3:25 If a house is divided against itself, it cannot stand.
Luk 11:18 If Satan is divided against himself, how can his kingdom…

And if I drive out demons by Beelzebul,

Jesus answers the Pharisees’ charge that His authority over demons comes from Satan. Their accusation rejects the evident power of God at work in His ministry and reveals their determination to oppose Him despite the miracles before them.

Mat 9:34 But the Pharisees said, “It is by the prince of demons…
Mrk 3:22 And the scribes who had come down from Jerusalem…
Luk 11:15 some of them said, “It is by Beelzebul, the prince…

by whom do your sons drive them out?

Jewish exorcists, including those associated with the Pharisees, were regarded as acting against demonic powers. If such works were accepted among their own followers, the Pharisees could not consistently condemn Jesus’ greater authority as satanic.

Luk 11:19 And if I drive out demons by Beelzebul, by whom do…
Act 19:13-16 Now there were some itinerant Jewish exorcists who tried…
Mrk 9:38-40 Teacher, we saw someone else driving out demons…

So then, they will be your judges.

Their own exorcists would expose the Pharisees’ false reasoning. By recognizing that demons should be expelled rather than empowered, they testified against the leaders’ refusal to acknowledge Jesus as acting by God’s power.

Luk 11:31-32 The Queen of the South will rise at the judgment…
Jhn 5:45 Do not think that I will accuse you before the Father.…
1Co 6:2-3 Do you not know that the saints will judge the world?…

But if I drive out demons by the Spirit of God,

Jesus’ deliverance of the demon-possessed revealed that His power came from God’s Spirit, not from Satan. These works demonstrated His authority over the forces of evil and confirmed His role as the promised Messiah.

Luk 11:20 But if I drive out demons by the finger of God,…
Act 10:38 how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit…
Mrk 1:27 All the people were amazed and began to ask one another…

then the kingdom of God has come upon you.

God’s reign had entered history in the person and ministry of Jesus. The defeat of demons showed that Satan’s power was being confronted and that the King had begun to establish His rule, not through political revolt, but through divine authority, righteousness, and redemption.

Luk 10:9 Heal the sick who are there and tell them,…
Mat 4:17 From that time on Jesus began to preach, “Repent…
Col 1:13 He has rescued us from the dominion of darkness…

Or again, how can anyone enter a strong man’s house and steal his possessions,

Jesus compares Satan to a strong man guarding his household and possessions. His “house” represents the realm in which he exercises influence through sin, deception, and demonic oppression. No one can rescue those held under such power without confronting its ruler.

Mrk 3:27 Indeed, no one can enter a strong man’s house…
Luk 11:21-22 When a strong man, fully armed, guards his house,…
Isa 49:24-25 Can the plunder be snatched from the mighty,…

unless he first ties up the strong man?

Jesus’ casting out of demons demonstrated that He had authority over Satan, not partnership with him. By confronting and restraining demonic power, He showed that Satan’s dominion was being invaded and his authority challenged by the kingdom of God.

Rev 20:1-3 Then I saw an angel coming down from heaven…
Col 2:15 And having disarmed the powers and authorities,…
Heb 2:14 Now since the children have flesh and blood,…

Then he can plunder his house.

Those delivered from demons and brought out of spiritual bondage were like possessions taken from Satan’s house. Jesus’ ministry revealed His power to free people from the enemy’s control, anticipating His decisive victory over Satan through His death and resurrection.

Act 26:18 open their eyes, so that they may turn from darkness…
Col 1:13-14 He has rescued us from the dominion of darkness…
1Jn 3:8 The one who practices sin is of the devil,…

He who is not with Me is against Me,

Jesus answers the Pharisees’ charge that He casts out demons by Satan’s power. His works reveal the arrival of God’s kingdom and require a response. The religious leaders could not reject Him while claiming loyalty to God; opposition to the Messiah was opposition to the God who sent Him. Jesus stands as the dividing line between faith and unbelief.

Luk 11:23 He who is not with Me is against Me, …
Mat 6:24 No one can serve two masters: Either he will hate the one…
Jhn 15:23 Whoever hates Me hates My Father as well.

and he who does not gather with Me scatters.

Jesus came to bring God’s people into His kingdom, beginning with the lost sheep of Israel. Those who share His work help gather people under His rule; those who oppose Him contribute to confusion, division, and spiritual loss. The contrast points forward to the final separation between those who belong to Christ and those who reject Him.

Jhn 11:52 and not only for the nation, but also…
Mat 23:37 O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, who kills the prophets…
Jhn 10:12 The hired hand is not the shepherd, and the sheep…

The Unpardonable Sin

Therefore I tell you,

Jesus draws a solemn conclusion from the Pharisees’ accusation that He cast out demons by Beelzebul. Their words revealed a refusal to recognize the Holy Spirit’s work displayed through Christ.

Mrk 3:28-29 Truly I tell you, the sons of men will be forgiven…
Luk 12:10 And everyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man…

every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven men,

God’s mercy extends to every kind of sin, including words spoken against God, when sinners repent and turn to Him. Forgiveness rests on God’s grace and is available through Christ.

1Ti 1:13-16 I was formerly a blasphemer, a persecutor,…
Act 13:38-39 Therefore let it be known to you, brothers,…
Eph 1:7 In Him we have redemption through His blood,…

but the blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven.

The Pharisees had witnessed works done by the Holy Spirit and knowingly attributed them to Satan. Such blasphemy is a hardened, deliberate rejection of the Spirit’s testimony concerning Jesus, rejecting the very One who brings conviction of sin and leads people to forgiveness.

Heb 6:4-6 It is impossible for those who have once been enlightened…
Heb 10:26-31 If we deliberately go on sinning after we have received…
1Jn 5:16-17 If anyone sees his brother committing a sin…

Whoever speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven,

Jesus’ title “Son of Man” identifies Him as the promised Messiah who came in true humanity. During His earthly ministry, people could misunderstand, oppose, or even reject Him and later repent and receive forgiveness, as many did after His resurrection.

Act 3:17 And now, brothers, I know that you acted in ignorance…
1Ti 1:13 I was formerly a blasphemer, a persecutor,…
Act 17:30 Although God overlooked the ignorance of earlier times,…

but whoever speaks against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven,

In the immediate context, the Pharisees had witnessed Jesus’ works and attributed the Holy Spirit’s power to Satan. Such blasphemy is a settled, willful rejection of the Spirit’s clear testimony that Jesus is the Christ. By rejecting the One who reveals the truth about Christ, a person rejects the only means of forgiveness.

Mrk 3:28-29 Truly I tell you, the sons of men will be forgiven…
Luk 12:10 And everyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man…
Heb 10:29 How much more severely do you think one deserves…

either in this age or in the one to come.

There is no forgiveness for this hardened rejection either in the present age or after final judgment. The warning concerns an eternal condition, not a careless word or a repentant believer’s moment of doubt.

Eph 1:21 far above all rule and authority, power and dominion,…
Mrk 10:30 will fail to receive a hundredfold…
Luk 18:30 will fail to receive many times more in this age…

Good and Bad Fruit

Make a tree good and its fruit will be good,

A sound tree naturally bears healthy fruit. Jesus uses this familiar agricultural reality to show that a person’s actions arise from the condition of the heart. A life shaped by righteousness will produce conduct consistent with that character.

Mat 7:17-18 Likewise, every good tree bears good fruit,…
Jhn 15:5 I am the vine and you are the branches…
Gal 5:22-23 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace…

or make a tree bad and its fruit will be bad,

A diseased tree cannot produce sound fruit. Likewise, sinful desires and corrupt motives lead to sinful words and deeds. Outward behavior exposes the moral condition within.

Mat 7:19-20 Every tree that does not bear good fruit…
Isa 5:2-4 He waited for the vineyard to yield good grapes…
Jer 2:21 I had planted you like a choice vine from the very best seed…

for a tree is known by its fruit.

Character is ultimately recognized by its visible results. Jesus warns against judging by appearances alone, since genuine faith and righteousness are shown through a consistent pattern of life.

Luk 6:43-45 No good tree bears bad fruit, nor does a bad tree…
Mat 7:16-20 By their fruit you will recognize them…
Jas 3:11-12 Can both fresh water and salt water flow…

You brood of vipers,

Jesus rebukes the Pharisees for their corrupt and dangerous opposition to Him. Though they appeared religious, their rejection of God’s Messiah and their slander of His work revealed hearts marked by evil.

Mat 3:7 But when John saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees…
Luk 3:7 Then John said to the crowds, “You brood of vipers,…
Mat 23:33 You snakes! You brood of vipers! How will you escape…

how can you who are evil say anything good?

Their words could not consistently reflect righteousness because they came from hearts opposed to God. Their religious claims and outward conduct could not conceal their unbelief and hostility toward Jesus.

Jhn 8:44 You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry…
Pro 15:28 The heart of the righteous ponders how to answer,…
Psa 10:7 His mouth is full of cursing, deceit, and violence…

For out of the overflow of the heart the mouth speaks.

Speech reveals what fills the inner person. The Pharisees’ accusation against Jesus exposed the evil they harbored, while truthful and righteous words flow from a heart changed by God.

Luk 6:45 The good man brings good things out of the good treasure…
Mat 15:18-19 But the things that come out of the mouth…
Mrk 7:20-23 He continued: “What comes out of a man, that…

The good man brings good things out of his good store of treasure,

A righteous person’s words and actions flow from a heart shaped by faithfulness to God. The treasure stored within includes truth, obedience, compassion, and reverence for the Lord. What is cultivated inwardly becomes visible in daily conduct.

Luk 6:45 The good man brings good things out of the good treasure…
Mat 15:18 But the things that come out of the mouth…
Pro 4:23 Guard your heart with all diligence, for from it flow…

and the evil man brings evil things out of his evil store of treasure.

A heart ruled by sin produces corrupt speech and harmful deeds. Evil does not arise merely from outward circumstances but from desires and intentions retained within. Jesus exposes the connection between the condition of the heart and the fruit of a person’s life.

Mrk 7:21-23 For from within the hearts of men come evil thoughts…
Mat 15:19 For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery…
Jas 3:10-12 Out of the same mouth come blessing and cursing.…

But I tell you

Jesus answered the Pharisees with divine authority after they attributed His work of casting out demons to Beelzebul. Their accusation revealed the seriousness of speaking falsely against the work of God.

Mat 5:22 But I tell you that anyone who is angry…
Luk 12:8 I tell you, everyone who confesses Me before men…
Luk 12:4 I tell you, My friends, do not be afraid…

that men will give an account

Every person will answer to God for what he has done and said. Human speech is not separate from moral responsibility, because words reveal the condition of the heart.

Rom 14:12 So then, each of us will give an account of himself to God.
1Pe 4:5 But they will have to give an account…
Heb 13:17 Obey your leaders and submit to them, for they watch over…

God has appointed a future day when He will judge all people in righteousness. No secret act, motive, or statement will be hidden from His judgment.

Luk 10:14 But it will be more bearable for Tyre and Sidon…
2Pe 2:9 if all this is so, then the Lord knows how to rescue…

for every careless word they have spoken.

Idle, reckless, and harmful words are included in that account. Jesus warned that speech is never insignificant, for it can expose unbelief, malice, hypocrisy, or contempt for God and others.

Luk 19:22 His master replied, ‘You wicked servant, I will judge you…
Jas 3:2 We all stumble in many ways. If anyone is never at fault…
Pro 10:19 When words are many, sin is unavoidable,…

For by your words you will be acquitted,

Jesus concludes His warning to the Pharisees after they blasphemously attributed His works to Satan. Speech reveals what fills the heart and will stand as evidence before God’s judgment. Those whose words confess the truth about Christ and reflect genuine faith demonstrate the reality of their allegiance to God.

Pro 12:13 An evil man is trapped by his rebellious speech…
Pro 12:6 The words of the wicked lie in wait for blood…
Rom 10:9-10 that if you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,”…

and by your words you will be condemned.”

Careless, deceitful, and malicious speech exposes an unrepentant heart. The Pharisees’ accusations against Jesus were not harmless remarks but evidence of their rejection of God’s work. God will judge every person rightly, including the words that reveal either faith and truth or rebellion and unbelief.

The Sign of Jonah

Then some of the scribes and Pharisees said to Him,

The scribes were trained interpreters of the Law, and the Pharisees were influential religious leaders devoted to Mosaic regulations and inherited traditions. Many had witnessed Jesus’ works yet remained opposed to Him, seeking grounds to discredit His authority.

Mat 15:1 Then some Pharisees and scribes came to Jesus…
Mrk 7:1 Then the Pharisees and some of the scribes who had come…
Luk 11:53 As Jesus went on from there, the scribes and Pharisees…

“Teacher,

Their respectful address concealed a hostile purpose. They recognized Jesus as a public teacher but did not approach Him as disciples seeking truth.

Mrk 10:17 As Jesus started on His way, a man ran up…
Mat 19:16 Just then a man came up to Jesus and inquired,…
Luk 10:25 One day an expert in the law stood up to test Him.…

we want to see a sign from You.”

They demanded a further miraculous display as proof of His authority, though Jesus had already healed the sick, cast out demons, and demonstrated God’s power openly. Their request revealed deliberate unbelief rather than a lack of evidence.

Mat 16:1 Then the Pharisees and Sadducees came and tested…
Mrk 8:11 Then the Pharisees came and began to argue with Jesus…
Luk 11:16 And others tested Him by demanding a sign from heaven.

Jesus replied,

He answered the Pharisees and teachers of the law who had demanded a sign to test His authority, despite having witnessed His teaching, healings, and deliverance of the afflicted.

Mat 21:24 “I will also ask you one question,” Jesus replied,…
Mat 22:29 Jesus answered, “You are mistaken because you do not know…
Jhn 18:34 “Are you saying this on your own,” Jesus asked…

“A wicked and adulterous generation

Their unbelief revealed moral rebellion and covenant unfaithfulness toward God. Like Israel’s repeated idolatry in earlier generations, they had turned from the God they claimed to serve.

Luk 11:16 And others tested Him by demanding a sign from heaven.
Jhn 6:30 So they asked Him, “What sign then will You perform,…

but none will be given it

Jesus would not satisfy a demand rooted in hardened unbelief.

Mrk 8:12 Jesus sighed deeply in His spirit and said,…
Jhn 4:48 Jesus said to him, “Unless you people see signs and wonders,…
Luk 16:31 Then Abraham said to him, ‘If they do not listen to Moses…

except the sign of the prophet Jonah.

Jonah’s three days in the fish anticipated Christ’s death, burial, and resurrection on the third day, the decisive confirmation of His identity and mission.

Luk 11:30 For as Jonah was a sign to the Ninevites,…
Jon 1:17 Now the LORD had appointed a great fish to swallow Jonah…
Jon 2:1 From inside the fish, Jonah prayed to the LORD his God,

For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the great fish,

Jonah was swallowed after fleeing God’s command to preach against Nineveh and remained in the fish until God delivered him alive onto dry land. His confinement and deliverance foreshadowed Christ’s death, burial, and resurrection. The three days and three nights describe a period spanning parts of three Jewish calendar days.

Jon 1:17 Now the LORD had appointed a great fish to swallow Jonah…
Jon 2:1 From inside the fish, Jonah prayed to the LORD his God,
Jon 2:2 “In my distress I called to the LORD, and He answered me.”…

so the Son of Man will be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.

Jesus applied Jonah’s experience to His own burial after the crucifixion. The heart of the earth refers to the grave, where His body was laid until His resurrection on the third day. As Jonah’s deliverance displayed God’s power over death, Christ’s resurrection confirmed His authority and fulfilled the sign given to His generation.

Mat 16:21 From that time on Jesus began to show His disciples…
Luk 24:46 And He told them, “This is what is written:…
1Co 15:4 that He was buried, that He was raised on the third day…

The men of Nineveh will stand at the judgment with this generation and condemn it;

Nineveh, the wicked Assyrian capital, repented when Jonah warned that God’s judgment was near. Its people will testify against those in Jesus’ generation who refused to believe despite receiving far greater light.

Mat 11:22-24 But I tell you, it will be more bearable for Tyre and Sidon…
Luk 10:12 I tell you, it will be more bearable on that day for Sodom…
Mat 10:15 Truly I tell you, it will be more bearable…

for they repented at the preaching of Jonah,

From the king to the common people, the Ninevites humbled themselves, turned from their evil ways, and received God’s mercy. Their response stands in sharp contrast to those who heard Jesus’ teaching and saw His works yet remained hardened.

Jon 3:5-10 And the Ninevites believed God. They proclaimed a fast…
Mrk 1:15 “The time is fulfilled,” He said, “and the kingdom of God…
Act 17:30-31 Although God overlooked the ignorance of earlier times,…

and now One greater than Jonah is here.

Jonah was a reluctant prophet sent with a message of judgment, but Jesus is the Son of God, sent to reveal the Father and bring salvation. Those who rejected Him bore greater responsibility than Nineveh, because the greater messenger and greater revelation stood before them.

Luk 11:32 The men of Nineveh will stand at the judgment…

Heb 1:1-2 On many past occasions and in many different ways,…

The Queen of the South was the Queen of Sheba, who visited Solomon after hearing of his extraordinary wisdom and wealth. She will stand as a witness at the final judgment against Jesus’ generation because she recognized God’s wisdom in Solomon, while many who saw Jesus’ works and heard His teaching rejected Him.

Luk 11:31-32 The Queen of the South will rise at the judgment…
1Ki 10:1-2 Now when the queen of Sheba heard about the fame…
2Ch 9:1-2 Now when the queen of Sheba heard about the fame…

for she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon,

She traveled from the distant kingdom of Sheba, in southern Arabia, to test Solomon and learn from him. Her journey showed the value she placed on the wisdom God had given Israel’s king.

1Ki 4:34 So men of all nations came to listen to Solomon’s wisdom,…
2Ch 9:23 All the kings of the earth sought an audience with Solomon…

Jesus surpasses Solomon in wisdom, authority, and glory. Solomon received wisdom from God; Jesus is the promised Messiah and reveals God perfectly. Those who refused Him were rejecting a greater revelation than the Queen of Sheba received.

An Unclean Spirit Returns

When an unclean spirit comes out of a man,

Jesus describes the real departure of a demon from a person. Such deliverance removes the spirit’s immediate control, but it does not guarantee that the person will remain spiritually secure.

Mrk 1:23-26 Suddenly a man with an unclean spirit cried out…
Luk 4:35 But Jesus rebuked the demon. “Be silent!” He said.…
Luk 8:29 For Jesus had commanded the unclean spirit to come out…

it passes through arid places

The wilderness and desolate regions were associated with isolation, danger, and demonic activity. Cut off from human habitation, the spirit wanders without a place to exercise its destructive influence.

Luk 11:24 When an unclean spirit comes out of a man,…
Jer 17:6 He will be like a shrub in the desert; he will not see…
Psa 107:4-5 Some wandered in desert wastelands, finding no path…

seeking rest

The demon seeks another dwelling in which to reside and act. Evil spirits do not find peace; they seek opportunities to corrupt and oppress.

Mat 11:28-29 Come to Me, all you who are weary and burdened,…
Psa 116:7 Return to your rest, O my soul, for the LORD has been good……
Heb 4:9-10 There remains, then, a Sabbath rest for the people of God.…

and does not find it.

Unable to find a place of rest, the spirit remains restless and seeks to return. Jesus’ warning prepares for the danger of an outwardly reformed life that has not been filled with faithful obedience to God.

Pro 1:28-29 Then they will call on me, but I will not answer;…
Jer 45:3 Woe is me because the LORD has added sorrow to my pain!…
Lam 1:3 Judah has gone into exile under affliction and harsh slavery…

Then it says, ‘I will return to the house I left.’

The unclean spirit represents demonic evil, and the house represents the person from whom it departed. Its return shows that outward change alone does not secure lasting freedom from sin and spiritual bondage. Israel had seen calls to repentance and reforms in its history, yet many remained unchanged at heart.

Luk 11:24 When an unclean spirit comes out of a man,…
Pro 26:11 As a dog returns to its vomit, so a fool repeats his folly.
2Pe 2:22 Of them the proverbs are true: “A dog returns to its vomit,”…

On its return, it finds the house vacant, swept clean, and put in order.

The person’s life appears morally improved, but it remains vacant because it has not been filled by God. External order and religious appearance cannot replace genuine repentance and faith. Without the Holy Spirit’s presence, the person remains exposed to renewed and greater demonic influence.

Luk 11:25 On its return, it finds the house swept clean…
Luk 11:26 Then it goes and brings seven other spirits…
1Co 6:19 Do you not know that your body is a temple…

Then it goes and brings with it seven other spirits more wicked than itself,

Jesus describes a real and intensified demonic assault. Seven conveys fullness, showing that the returning spirit seeks to establish a stronger hold than before. Deliverance without repentance and submission to God leaves a person exposed to a deeper bondage.

Luk 11:26 Then it goes and brings seven other spirits…
Luk 8:2 as well as some women who had been healed of evil spirits…
Mrk 5:9 “What is your name?” Jesus asked. “My name is Legion,”…

and they go in and dwell there.

The unclean spirits return not merely to trouble but to occupy. What was emptied of evil must be filled with devotion to God; otherwise, the former condition becomes an opportunity for evil to regain control.

Mrk 5:12-13 So the demons begged Jesus, “Send us to the pigs,”…
Luk 8:33 Then the demons came out of the man and went into the pigs,…
Luk 22:3 Then Satan entered Judas Iscariot, who was one of the Twelve…

And the final plight of that man is worse than the first.

A temporary outward change cannot secure lasting freedom. When a person turns back after receiving light and deliverance, the resulting spiritual condition may become more severe than the original state.

2Pe 2:20-22 If indeed they have escaped the corruption of the world…
Jhn 5:14 Afterward, Jesus found the man at the temple and said to him…
Pro 26:11 As a dog returns to its vomit, so a fool repeats his folly.

So will it be with this wicked generation.”

Jesus applies the warning to the generation that had witnessed His works and heard His teaching but refused to repent. Israel’s rejection of the Messiah would leave the nation in a worse spiritual condition and bring judgment.

Luk 11:29-32 As the crowds were increasing, Jesus said,…
Deu 32:5-6 His people have acted corruptly toward Him;…
Psa 78:8 Then they will not be like their fathers,…

Jesus’ Mother and Brothers

While Jesus was still speaking to the crowds,

Jesus continued His public ministry among the people who had gathered to hear Him. His teaching drew followers, the curious, and opponents, while the religious leaders increasingly challenged His authority.

Luk 11:27-28 As Jesus was saying these things, a woman in the crowd…
Mrk 4:1-2 Once again Jesus began to teach beside the sea…
Mat 13:34-35 Jesus spoke all these things to the crowds in parables.…

His mother and brothers stood outside,

Mary and Jesus’ brothers came to the place where He was teaching but remained outside because of the crowd. Their presence affirms Jesus’ real human family and earthly life.

Mrk 3:31-32 Then Jesus’ mother and brothers came and stood outside…
Luk 8:19-20 Then Jesus’ mother and brothers came to see Him…
Jhn 2:12 After this, He went down to Capernaum with His mother…

wanting to speak to Him.

Their request likely arose from concern over the growing conflict surrounding His ministry. Jesus would use the occasion to show that obedience to God establishes a deeper spiritual family than natural family ties.

Luk 2:48-49 When His parents saw Him, they were astonished.…
Jhn 2:3-5 When the wine ran out, Jesus’ mother said to Him…
Jhn 7:3-5 So Jesus’ brothers said to Him, “Leave here and go to Judea,…

Someone told Him,

Jesus was teaching amid a crowded gathering when an unnamed person brought word that His family had arrived.

Luk 8:20 He was told, “Your mother and brothers are outside…
Mrk 3:32 and a crowd was sitting around Him. “Look,” He was told,…

“Look, Your mother and brothers

Mary and Jesus’ brothers came seeking Him, showing the ordinary family relationships He possessed in His earthly life.

Jhn 2:12 After this, He went down to Capernaum with His mother…
Mat 13:55 Isn’t this the carpenter’s son? Isn’t His mother’s…

Jhn 18:16 But Peter stood outside at the door. Then the disciple…

wanting to speak to You.”
