And He told them
This phrase indicates Jesus is speaking directly to His disciples. It is a post-resurrection appearance, emphasizing the importance of His message. Jesus often used direct communication to ensure His teachings were clearly understood by His followers. This setting is intimate and instructional, highlighting the role of Jesus as a teacher and leader.

This is what is written
Jesus refers to the fulfillment of Old Testament prophecies. The phrase underscores the continuity between the Hebrew Scriptures and the New Testament, affirming that His life and mission were foretold. Scriptures such as Isaiah 53 and Psalm 22 are often cited as prophetic texts that speak of the Messiah's suffering and triumph.

The Christ will suffer
The suffering of the Messiah was a concept that many Jews of the time struggled to accept, as they expected a conquering king. However, passages like Isaiah 53:3-5 describe a suffering servant, which Jesus fulfills. This suffering was necessary for the atonement of sin, aligning with the sacrificial system established in the Old Testament.

and rise from the dead
The resurrection is central to Christian faith, validating Jesus' divinity and His victory over sin and death. It fulfills prophecies such as Psalm 16:10, which speaks of God not allowing His Holy One to see decay. The resurrection is also a cornerstone for the hope of eternal life for believers, as seen in 1 Corinthians 15:20-22.

on the third day
The mention of the third day is significant, as it aligns with Jesus' own predictions (e.g., Matthew 12:40) and typological events in the Old Testament, such as Jonah's three days in the belly of the fish. The third day signifies completeness and divine intervention, marking the transition from death to life.

Persons / Places / Events
1. Jesus Christ
The central figure of the passage, who is explaining the fulfillment of prophecy regarding His suffering, death, and resurrection.

2. The Disciples

3. Jerusalem
The city where these events are taking place, significant as the location of Jesus' crucifixion and resurrection.

4. The Resurrection
The event of Jesus rising from the dead, which is the cornerstone of Christian faith and the fulfillment of Old Testament prophecy.

5. The Scriptures
Refers to the Old Testament prophecies that foretold the suffering and resurrection of the Messiah.
Teaching Points
Fulfillment of Prophecy
Jesus' life, death, and resurrection were not random events but the fulfillment of God's redemptive plan as foretold in the Scriptures.

The Centrality of the Resurrection
The resurrection is not just an event but the foundation of Christian faith, affirming Jesus' victory over sin and death.

Understanding Scripture
Believers are encouraged to study the Old Testament to see how it points to Christ, enhancing their understanding of God's plan.

The Role of Suffering
Jesus' suffering was necessary for the redemption of humanity, teaching us that suffering can have a divine purpose.

Commission to Witness
Just as the disciples were commissioned to share the gospel, believers today are called to witness to the truth of Jesus' death and resurrection.

What Does Luke 24:46 Mean
And He told them

- Jesus, now physically risen, is personally coaching His followers (Luke 24:36-45).

- He is not offering speculation; He is giving eyewitness, authoritative truth (Luke 24:27).

- His words carry absolute weight because they come from the resurrected Lord (John 20:19-21).

- For us, this line reminds that Christian faith rests on what Jesus Himself has said, not on opinions or traditions.

This is what is written

- Jesus anchors everything in the Scriptures already given (Luke 24:44).

- The Law, Prophets, and Psalms all pointed forward to this moment (Acts 26:22-23).

- Our confidence grows when we see that God’s plan was spelled out long before the events unfolded (Psalm 22, Isaiah 53, Hosea 6:2).

The Christ will suffer

- Prophecies specified a suffering Messiah, not merely a conquering king (Isaiah 53:3-5; Psalm 22:16-18).

- Jesus’ scourging, crucifixion, and piercing fulfilled these texts exactly (John 19:28-37).

- The early church continually preached this link: “God… foretold through all the prophets that His Christ would suffer” (Acts 3:18).

- Suffering was not a detour; it was the designed pathway for atonement (1 Peter 3:18).

and rise from the dead

- Resurrection was likewise foretold: “You will not abandon my soul to Sheol” (Psalm 16:10); “He will prolong His days” after being crushed (Isaiah 53:10-11).

- God “raised Him from the dead, releasing Him from the agony of death” (Acts 2:24).

- Paul sums it up: “Christ… was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures” (1 Corinthians 15:4).

- The empty tomb validates everything Jesus claimed and everything Scripture promised.

on the third day

- The timing also fulfilled prophecy: Hosea 6:2 hints at revival “on the third day.”

- Jonah’s three-day entombment in the fish foreshadowed Messiah’s burial (Jonah 1:17; Matthew 12:40).

- Jesus predicted this timetable repeatedly (Mark 8:31; 9:31; 10:34).

- The precision of “third day” underscores God’s sovereign control and the reliability of His Word.

summary

Luke 24:46 condenses the gospel in a single sentence: Scripture promised a suffering, dying, and rising Messiah; Jesus fulfilled every detail, exactly on schedule. Because He said it, Scripture recorded it, and history confirmed it, our faith stands secure and our mission to share this message is unquestionable.

(46) Thus it behoved Christ to suffer.--Better, as elsewhere, that the Christ should suffer.

Verse 46. - Thus it is written, and thus it behoved Christ to suffer, and to rise. from the dead the third day. The majority of the older authorities omit the words, "and thus it behoved." The verse should be read thus: "Thus it is written that Christ should suffer," etc. These words probably were spoken on that first Easter evening. They were apparently repeated on several occasions during the forty days. The Old Testament - they would see now with the new light cast upon it - showed the necessity of an atoning Redeemer, from the sin which it everywhere reveals, and of a dying Redeemer, from the death which it proclaims as the consequence. While the same Scriptures no less authoritatively proclaim that through this suffering the Redeemer-Messiah should attain to his glorification.
