Temple Destruction and Other Signs
(Matthew 24:1–8; Luke 21:5–9)
1 Καὶ (And) ἐκπορευομένου (on the going forth) αὐτοῦ (of Him) ἐκ (out of) τοῦ (the) ἱεροῦ (temple) λέγει (says) αὐτῷ (to Him) εἷς (one) τῶν (of the) μαθητῶν (disciples) αὐτοῦ (of Him)· Διδάσκαλε (Teacher), ἴδε (behold) ποταποὶ (what) λίθοι (stones) καὶ (and) ποταπαὶ (what) οἰκοδομαί (buildings).
2 Καὶ (And) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) εἶπεν (said) αὐτῷ (to him)· Βλέπεις (Do you see) ταύτας (these) τὰς (-) μεγάλας (great) οἰκοδομάς (buildings)? οὐ (No) μὴ (not) ἀφεθῇ (shall be left) ὧδε (here) λίθος (a stone) ἐπὶ (upon) λίθον (a stone) ὃς (which) οὐ (no) μὴ (not) καταλυθῇ (shall be thrown down).
3 Καὶ (And) καθημένου (in the sitting) αὐτοῦ (of Him) εἰς (at) τὸ (the) ὄρος (Mount) τῶν (-) Ἐλαιῶν (of Olives) κατέναντι (opposite) τοῦ (the) ἱεροῦ (temple), ἐπηρώτα (were questioning) αὐτὸν (Him) κατ’ (by) ἰδίαν (Himself) Πέτρος (Peter) καὶ (and) Ἰάκωβος (James) καὶ (and) Ἰωάννης (John) καὶ (and) Ἀνδρέας (Andrew)·
4 Εἰπὸν (Tell) ἡμῖν (us), πότε (when) ταῦτα (these things) ἔσται (will be), καὶ (And) τί (what is) τὸ (the) σημεῖον (sign) ὅταν (when) μέλλῃ (are about) ταῦτα (these things) συντελεῖσθαι (to be accomplished) πάντα (all)?
5 Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) ἤρξατο (began) λέγειν (to say) αὐτοῖς (to them)· Βλέπετε (Take heed) μή (lest) τις (anyone) ὑμᾶς (you⁺) πλανήσῃ (may lead astray).
6 πολλοὶ (Many) ἐλεύσονται (will come) ἐπὶ (in) τῷ (the) ὀνόματί (name) μου (of Me) λέγοντες (saying) ὅτι (-) Ἐγώ (I) εἰμι (am He), καὶ (and) πολλοὺς (many) πλανήσουσιν (they will lead astray).
7 ὅταν (When) δὲ (then) ἀκούσητε (you⁺ shall hear of) πολέμους (wars) καὶ (and) ἀκοὰς (rumors) πολέμων (of wars), μὴ (not) θροεῖσθε (be alarmed)· δεῖ (it is necessary) γενέσθαι (to happen), ἀλλ’ (but) οὔπω (not yet is) τὸ (the) τέλος (end).
8 ἐγερθήσεται (Will rise up) γὰρ (for) ἔθνος (nation) ἐπ’ (against) ἔθνος (nation) καὶ (and) βασιλεία (kingdom) ἐπὶ (against) βασιλείαν (kingdom). ἔσονται (There will be) σεισμοὶ (earthquakes) κατὰ (in) τόπους (various places), ἔσονται (there will be) λιμοί (famines)· ἀρχὴ (The beginning) ὠδίνων (of birth pains are) ταῦτα (these).
Witnessing to All Nations
(Matthew 24:9–14; Luke 21:10–19)
9 Βλέπετε (Take heed) δὲ (however) ὑμεῖς (you⁺) ἑαυτούς (to yourselves)· παραδώσουσιν (they will deliver up) ὑμᾶς (you⁺) εἰς (to) συνέδρια (courts) καὶ (and) εἰς (in) συναγωγὰς (synagogues) δαρήσεσθε (you⁺ will be beaten) καὶ (and) ἐπὶ (before) ἡγεμόνων (governors) καὶ (and) βασιλέων (kings) σταθήσεσθε (you⁺ will stand) ἕνεκεν (on account) ἐμοῦ (of Me), εἰς (for) μαρτύριον (a testimony) αὐτοῖς (to them).
10 καὶ (And) εἰς (to) πάντα (all) τὰ (the) ἔθνη (nations) πρῶτον (first) δεῖ (it is necessary for) κηρυχθῆναι (to be proclaimed) τὸ (the) εὐαγγέλιον (gospel).
11 καὶ (And) ὅταν (when) ἄγωσιν (they might lead away) ὑμᾶς (you⁺) παραδιδόντες (delivering you up), μὴ (not) προμεριμνᾶτε (be anxious beforehand) τί (what) λαλήσητε (you⁺ shall speak), ἀλλ’ (but) ὃ (whatever) ἐὰν (if) δοθῇ (might be given) ὑμῖν (to you⁺) ἐν (in) ἐκείνῃ (that) τῇ (-) ὥρᾳ (hour), τοῦτο (that) λαλεῖτε (speak)· οὐ (not) γάρ (for) ἐστε (are) ὑμεῖς (you⁺) οἱ (the ones) λαλοῦντες (speaking) ἀλλὰ (but) τὸ (the) Πνεῦμα (Spirit) τὸ (-) Ἅγιον (Holy).
12 Καὶ (And) παραδώσει (will deliver up) ἀδελφὸς (brother) ἀδελφὸν (brother) εἰς (to) θάνατον (death) καὶ (and) πατὴρ (father) τέκνον (child), καὶ (and) ἐπαναστήσονται (will rise up) τέκνα (children) ἐπὶ (against) γονεῖς (parents) καὶ (and) θανατώσουσιν (will put to death) αὐτούς (them)·
13 καὶ (And) ἔσεσθε (you⁺ will be) μισούμενοι (hated) ὑπὸ (by) πάντων (all) διὰ (because of) τὸ (the) ὄνομά (name) μου (of Me)· ὁ (the one) δὲ (however) ὑπομείνας (having endured) εἰς (to) τέλος (the end), οὗτος (he) σωθήσεται (will be saved).
The Abomination of Desolation

14 Ὅταν (When) δὲ (however) ἴδητε (you⁺ shall see) τὸ (the) βδέλυγμα (abomination) τῆς (of the) ἐρημώσεως (desolation) ἑστηκότα (standing) ὅπου (where) οὐ (not) δεῖ (it should), ὁ (the one) ἀναγινώσκων (reading) νοείτω (let him understand), τότε (then) οἱ (those) ἐν (in) τῇ (-) Ἰουδαίᾳ (Judea) φευγέτωσαν (let them flee) εἰς (to) τὰ (the) ὄρη (mountains),
15 ὁ (the one) δὲ (and) ἐπὶ (upon) τοῦ (the) δώματος (housetop) μὴ (not) καταβάτω (let him come down) μηδὲ (nor) εἰσελθάτω (go in) ἆραι (to take up) τι (anything) ἐκ (out of) τῆς (the) οἰκίας (house) αὐτοῦ (of him),
16 καὶ (and) ὁ (the one) εἰς (in) τὸν (the) ἀγρὸν (field) μὴ (not) ἐπιστρεψάτω (let him return) εἰς (to) τὰ (the things) ὀπίσω (behind) ἆραι (to take away) τὸ (the) ἱμάτιον (garment) αὐτοῦ (of him).
17 Οὐαὶ (Woe) δὲ (then) ταῖς (to those) ἐν (in) γαστρὶ (womb) ἐχούσαις (having) καὶ (and) ταῖς (to those) θηλαζούσαις (nursing) ἐν (in) ἐκείναις (those) ταῖς (-) ἡμέραις (days).
18 προσεύχεσθε (Pray) δὲ (then) ἵνα (that it) μὴ (not) γένηται (might be) χειμῶνος (in winter)·
19 ἔσονται (will be in) γὰρ (for) αἱ (the) ἡμέραι (days) ἐκεῖναι (those) θλῖψις (tribulation), οἵα (such as) οὐ (not) γέγονεν (has been) τοιαύτη (the like) ἀπ’ (from) ἀρχῆς (the beginning) κτίσεως (of creation) ἣν (that) ἔκτισεν (created) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) ἕως (until) τοῦ (-) νῦν (now) καὶ (and) οὐ (no) μὴ (not) γένηται (shall be).
20 καὶ (And) εἰ (if) μὴ (not) ἐκολόβωσεν (shortened) Κύριος (the Lord) τὰς (the) ἡμέρας (days), οὐκ (not) ἂν (-) ἐσώθη (would have been saved) πᾶσα (any) σάρξ (flesh)· ἀλλὰ (but) διὰ (because of) τοὺς (the) ἐκλεκτοὺς (chosen) οὓς (whom) ἐξελέξατο (He chose) ἐκολόβωσεν (He shortened) τὰς (the) ἡμέρας (days).
21 Καὶ (And) τότε (then) ἐάν (if) τις (anyone) ὑμῖν (to you⁺) εἴπῃ (shall say)· Ἴδε (Behold) ὧδε (here is) ὁ (the) Χριστός (Christ), Ἴδε (Behold) ἐκεῖ (there), μὴ (not) πιστεύετε (believe it)·
22 ἐγερθήσονται (There will arise) γὰρ (for) ψευδόχριστοι (false Christs) καὶ (and) ψευδοπροφῆται (false prophets) καὶ (and) δώσουσιν (will give) σημεῖα (signs) καὶ (and) τέρατα (wonders) πρὸς (in order) τὸ (-) ἀποπλανᾶν (to lead astray) εἰ (if) δυνατὸν (possible) τοὺς (the) ἐκλεκτούς (chosen)·
23 ὑμεῖς (You⁺) δὲ (however) βλέπετε (take heed)· προείρηκα (I have forewarned of) ὑμῖν (you⁺) πάντα (all things).
The Return of the Son of Man
(Matthew 24:26–31; Luke 21:25–28)
24 Ἀλλὰ (But) ἐν (in) ἐκείναις (those) ταῖς (-) ἡμέραις (days) μετὰ (after) τὴν (the) θλῖψιν (tribulation) ἐκείνην (that)·
Ὁ (The) ἥλιος (sun) σκοτισθήσεται (will be darkened),
Καὶ (and) ἡ (the) σελήνη (moon) οὐ (not) δώσει (will give) τὸ (the) φέγγος (light) αὐτῆς (of her),
25 Καὶ (and) οἱ (the) ἀστέρες (stars) ἔσονται (will be) ἐκ (out of) τοῦ (the) οὐρανοῦ (sky) πίπτοντες (falling),
Καὶ (and) αἱ (the) δυνάμεις (powers) αἱ (that are) ἐν (in) τοῖς (the) οὐρανοῖς (heavens) σαλευθήσονται (will be shaken).
26 Καὶ (And) τότε (then) ὄψονται (they will see) τὸν (the) Υἱὸν (Son) τοῦ (-) ἀνθρώπου (of Man) ἐρχόμενον (coming) ἐν (in) νεφέλαις (clouds) μετὰ (with) δυνάμεως (power) πολλῆς (great) καὶ (and) δόξης (glory).
27 καὶ (And) τότε (then) ἀποστελεῖ (He will send) τοὺς (the) ἀγγέλους (angels) καὶ (and) ἐπισυνάξει (He will gather together) τοὺς (the) ἐκλεκτοὺς (chosen) αὐτοῦ (of Him) ἐκ (from) τῶν (the) τεσσάρων (four) ἀνέμων (winds) ἀπ’ (from) ἄκρου (the end) γῆς (of earth) ἕως (to) ἄκρου (the end) οὐρανοῦ (of heaven).
The Lesson of the Fig Tree
(Matthew 24:32–35; Luke 21:29–33)
28 Ἀπὸ (Of) δὲ (now) τῆς (the) συκῆς (fig tree) μάθετε (learn) τὴν (the) παραβολήν (parable)· ὅταν (When) ἤδη (already) ὁ (the) κλάδος (branch) αὐτῆς (of it) ἁπαλὸς (tender) γένηται (shall have become) καὶ (and) ἐκφύῃ (it puts forth) τὰ (the) φύλλα (leaves), γινώσκετε (you⁺ know) ὅτι (that) ἐγγὺς (near) τὸ (the) θέρος (summer) ἐστίν (is)·
29 οὕτως (So) καὶ (also) ὑμεῖς (you⁺), ὅταν (when) ἴδητε (you⁺ see) ταῦτα (these things) γινόμενα (coming to pass), γινώσκετε (know) ὅτι (that) ἐγγύς (near) ἐστιν (He is) ἐπὶ (at) θύραις (the doors).
30 ἀμὴν (Truly) λέγω (I say) ὑμῖν (to you⁺) ὅτι (that) οὐ (no) μὴ (not) παρέλθῃ (will have passed away) ἡ (the) γενεὰ (generation) αὕτη (this) μέχρις (until) οὗ (-) ταῦτα (these things) πάντα (all) γένηται (shall have come to pass).
31 ὁ (The) οὐρανὸς (heaven) καὶ (and) ἡ (the) γῆ (earth) παρελεύσονται (will pass away), οἱ (-) δὲ (but) λόγοι (the words) μου (of Me) οὐ (no) μὴ (not) παρελεύσονται (will pass away).
Readiness at Any Hour
(Matthew 24:36–51; Luke 12:35–48)
32 Περὶ (Concerning) δὲ (however) τῆς (the) ἡμέρας (day) ἐκείνης (that) ἢ (or) τῆς (the) ὥρας (hour) οὐδεὶς (no one) οἶδεν (knows), οὐδὲ (not even) οἱ (the) ἄγγελοι (angels) ἐν (in) οὐρανῷ (heaven) οὐδὲ (nor) ὁ (the) Υἱός (Son), εἰ (if) μὴ (not) ὁ (the) Πατήρ (Father).
33 Βλέπετε (Take heed), ἀγρυπνεῖτε (stay awake)· οὐκ (not) οἴδατε (you⁺ know) γὰρ (for) πότε (when) ὁ (the) καιρός (time) ἐστιν (is).
34 Ὡς (It is like) ἄνθρωπος (a man) ἀπόδημος (going on a journey) ἀφεὶς (having left) τὴν (the) οἰκίαν (house) αὐτοῦ (of him) καὶ (and) δοὺς (having given) τοῖς (the) δούλοις (servants) αὐτοῦ (of him) τὴν (-) ἐξουσίαν (authority), ἑκάστῳ (to each) τὸ (the) ἔργον (work) αὐτοῦ (of him), καὶ (And) τῷ (the) θυρωρῷ (doorkeeper) ἐνετείλατο (he commanded) ἵνα (that) γρηγορῇ (he should watch).
35 γρηγορεῖτε (Watch) οὖν (therefore)· οὐκ (not) οἴδατε (you⁺ know) γὰρ (for) πότε (when) ὁ (the) κύριος (master) τῆς (of the) οἰκίας (house) ἔρχεται (comes), ἢ (either) ὀψὲ (at evening) ἢ (or) μεσονύκτιον (at midnight) ἢ (or) ἀλεκτοροφωνίας (when the rooster crows) ἢ (or) πρωΐ (morning)·
36 μὴ (lest) ἐλθὼν (having come) ἐξαίφνης (suddenly) εὕρῃ (he should find) ὑμᾶς (you⁺) καθεύδοντας (sleeping).
37 ὃ (What) δὲ (now) ὑμῖν (to you⁺) λέγω (I say), πᾶσιν (to all) λέγω (I say), γρηγορεῖτε (Watch).
