Berean Study Bible The Birth of JesusJudea was under Roman rule, and many Jews longed for the promised Messiah amid political pressure and foreign control. Mat 3:1 In those days John the Baptist came, preaching… a decree went out An imperial order set events in motion beyond the control of the people involved. Dan 2:13 So the decree went out that the wise men were to be executed… from Caesar Augustus Augustus, Rome’s first emperor, ruled from 27 BC to AD 14 and established stability throughout the empire through centralized administration. Act 17:7 and Jason has welcomed them into his home.… that a census should be taken Roman censuses served governmental purposes such as taxation and registration, requiring families to comply with imperial authority. Num 1:2-3 “Take a census of the whole congregation of Israel… of the whole empire. Rome’s reach extended across much of the known world, yet God used an empire-wide decree to bring Joseph and Mary to Bethlehem for Jesus’s birth. Act 11:28 One of them named Agabus stood up and predicted… This was the first census Augustus’s decree brought Joseph and Mary to Bethlehem, fulfilling God’s purpose in the Messiah’s birth. Roman censuses established records for taxation and administration throughout the empire. Num 1:2 “Take a census of the whole congregation of Israel… to take place Luke presents the enrollment as a definite historical event, occurring under Roman authority and affecting families across the region. Mat 1:22 All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said… while Quirinius was governor of Syria. Quirinius administered Syria, the Roman province exercising authority over Judea. Luke distinguishes this registration from the later census associated with Quirinius, anchoring Jesus’ birth within Rome’s rule over the Jewish people. Act 5:37 After him, Judas the Galilean appeared… And everyone went Caesar’s decree was carried out throughout the empire, requiring people to comply with the census. Roman authority shaped the immediate circumstances that brought Joseph and Mary to Bethlehem. 1Ki 12:16 When all Israel saw that the king had refused to listen… to his own town Joseph traveled to Bethlehem, David’s city and his ancestral town, because he belonged to David’s house and line. The journey placed the family where the promised Messiah was to be born. Ezr 2:1 Now these are the people of the province who came up… to register. The census served Rome’s administrative and taxation purposes, yet God used it to accomplish His purpose in the birth of Christ. Exo 30:12-16 When you take a census of the Israelites… So Joseph also went up from Nazareth in Galilee Joseph left Nazareth, an obscure village in Galilee, and traveled south toward Judea. The route rose significantly in elevation, making “went up” geographically fitting. In obedience to the imperial census, Joseph undertook the journey with Mary despite its difficulty. Luk 1:26-27 In the sixth month, God sent the angel Gabriel… to Judea, to the city of David called Bethlehem, Bethlehem was David’s hometown and remained closely associated with Israel’s royal line. Its role in the Messiah’s birth established Jesus’ connection with David’s promised kingdom. The small town’s name, “house of bread,” also fittingly anticipates the One who would give life to the world. Mic 5:2 But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, who are small… since he was from the house and line of David. Joseph belonged to David’s descendants, giving Jesus legal standing within the royal family through His earthly father. The journey to Bethlehem placed Jesus’ birth within the historic line of David and the fulfillment of God’s promise of an enduring king from David’s house. 2Sa 7:12-16 And when your days are fulfilled and you rest… He went there to register with Mary, Joseph traveled to Bethlehem, the town of David, in obedience to the census decree. His journey brought the promised Messiah to the place foretold for His birth. By taking Mary with him, Joseph assumed public responsibility for her and for the child, despite the hardship of travel late in her pregnancy. Num 1:2-3 “Take a census of the whole congregation of Israel… who was pledged to him in marriage Mary and Joseph were legally bound by betrothal, a commitment recognized under Jewish law as more than an informal engagement. Though they had not yet begun living together as husband and wife, Joseph faithfully accepted the responsibility God had given him. Luk 1:27 a virgin pledged in marriage to a man named Joseph,… and was expecting a child. Mary carried Jesus, conceived by the Holy Spirit. Her pregnancy fulfilled God’s promise that the Messiah would be born of a virgin, even as it exposed Mary and Joseph to public misunderstanding. Luk 1:31 Behold, you will conceive and give birth to a son,… While they were there, Mary and Joseph had arrived in Bethlehem for the census ordered by Caesar Augustus. Though Bethlehem was a small town, it was the city of David and the appointed birthplace of the Messiah. Mat 2:1-6 After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea,… the time came Mary’s pregnancy reached its completion according to God’s purpose. The promised Savior entered the world at the time God had ordained. Gen 21:1-2 Now the LORD attended to Sarah as He had said… for her Child to be born. Jesus was born as a true human child while remaining the eternal Son of God, Immanuel, “God with us.” His birth marked the beginning of His earthly life and the fulfillment of God’s promise to send the Messiah. Isa 9:6 For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given,… And she gave birth to her firstborn, a Son. Jesus was born as promised, entering the world through Mary in full humanity. As her firstborn, He held the honored status given to the first son in Israel while remaining uniquely the Son of God. Mat 1:25 But he had no union with her until she gave birth to a Son.… She wrapped Him in swaddling cloths Mary cared for Him as any mother would care for a newborn, wrapping Him securely for warmth and protection. The detail reveals the real vulnerability of the infant Christ. Ezk 16:4 On the day of your birth your cord was not cut… and laid Him in a manger, The feeding trough shows the humble conditions surrounding His birth. The Savior came without earthly privilege, among ordinary people and animals. Luk 13:15 “You hypocrites!” the Lord replied. “Does not each of you… because there was no room for them in the inn. The census had filled the available lodging, leaving Mary and Joseph without a proper guest room. From His birth, Jesus entered a world that did not recognize the King who had come. Jdg 19:15 They stopped to go in and lodge in Gibeah.…
The Shepherds and the AngelsShepherds were common in Judea and were often regarded as humble laborers. Their presence near Bethlehem recalls David’s early life as a shepherd and points to the city from which the promised King would come. Gen 47:3 “What is your occupation?” Pharaoh asked… residing in the fields nearby, They remained with their animals in the open country around Bethlehem, where flocks grazed in the surrounding pastureland. Gen 29:2-3 He looked and saw a well in the field, and near it… keeping watch over their flocks by night. Night watch protected the sheep from predators and thieves. Into this ordinary scene, God brought the first announcement of the Savior’s birth, revealing His glory in the darkness. Gen 31:39-40 I did not bring you anything torn by wild beasts;… Just then an angel of the Lord stood before them, God interrupted the shepherds’ ordinary night watch with a direct heavenly announcement. The choice of shepherds shows that the birth of the Messiah was revealed first to humble people rather than to Jerusalem’s rulers or religious leaders. Zec 3:1 Then the angel showed me Joshua the high priest… and the glory of the Lord shone around them, God’s radiant presence surrounded the field, confirming that the message came from Him. The glory that had marked God’s dwelling among His people now accompanied the announcement of the Savior’s birth. Ezk 43:2 I saw the glory of the God of Israel coming from the east.… and they were terrified. The shepherds were overwhelmed by the sudden appearance of the angel and the visible glory of God. Their fear prepared the way for the angel’s assurance and proclamation of good news. Mat 28:4 The guards trembled in fear of him and became like dead men. But the angel said to them, God’s messenger addressed shepherds near Bethlehem, where David had been born and raised. Their presence underscores that the announcement of the Messiah was not reserved for rulers or religious elites. Mat 28:5 But the angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid,… “Do not be afraid! The shepherds’ fear was a natural response to the angelic appearance and the glory surrounding them. The angel immediately calmed them because the message concerned God’s saving purpose, not judgment. Gen 15:1 After these events, the word of the LORD came to Abram… For behold, The announcement demanded careful attention because it revealed the fulfillment of God’s long-promised salvation. Mat 1:23 “Behold, the virgin will be with child”… I bring you good news The angel proclaimed the good news—the Gospel—of the birth of Jesus Christ, whose coming would bring salvation from sin and reconciliation with God. Isa 61:1 The Spirit of the Lord GOD is on Me, because the LORD… of great joy The joy rests in the arrival of the Savior and the certainty that God had kept His promises to His people. Luk 1:14 He will be a joy and delight to you, and many… that will be for all the people: Though the Messiah was born among Israel, His salvation would extend to people from every nation. Tit 2:11 For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation… Today God’s promised salvation entered history with the birth of Jesus. Luk 4:21 He began by saying, “Today this Scripture is fulfilled… in the city of David Bethlehem was David’s birthplace and the promised birthplace of the Messiah, identifying Jesus as the heir to David’s royal line. Mic 5:2 But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, who are small… a Savior He came to deliver sinners from sin, death, and judgment. Act 13:23 From the descendants of this man, God has brought to Israel… has been born to you. The announcement was given to shepherds, showing that God’s saving work was offered to ordinary people as well as rulers and religious leaders. Isa 9:6 For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given,… He is Christ Jesus is the promised Messiah—Christ, meaning “Anointed One”—God’s anointed King. Jhn 20:31 But these are written so that you may believe… the Lord! He possesses divine authority and reigns as the rightful ruler over all. Act 2:36 Therefore let all Israel know that God has made… And this will be a sign to you: The angel gives the shepherds a clear, verifiable mark by which they will recognize the promised Savior. Their discovery would confirm that the announcement came from God and that the Messiah had truly been born. Isa 37:30 And this will be a sign to you, O Hezekiah: This year… You will find a baby wrapped in swaddling cloths Jesus entered the world as a real human infant, cared for by Mary in the ordinary manner of the time. Though He was the promised King, His birth began in weakness and dependence rather than earthly splendor. Ezk 16:4 On the day of your birth your cord was not cut… and lying in a manger.” The child would be found in an animal feeding trough, revealing the humble circumstances of His birth. The sign distinguished Him from every other newborn in Bethlehem and showed that the Savior had come near to the poor and overlooked. Isa 1:3 The ox knows its owner, and the donkey its master’s manger… And suddenly there appeared with the angel The angel who announced the Savior’s birth was joined without warning by others from heaven, confirming that the shepherds were witnessing a real divine event. Luk 1:11 Just then an angel of the Lord appeared to Zechariah… a great multitude of the heavenly host, An immense company of angels appeared as God’s heavenly army, displaying the glory and authority of the King whose birth had just been announced. Their presence marked Jesus’ arrival as an event of cosmic importance. Heb 12:22 Instead, you have come to Mount Zion, to the city… praising God and saying: The angels responded in worship because God was fulfilling His promised plan of salvation through the birth of Christ. Their proclamation would declare God’s glory and the peace brought through His Son. Rev 7:11-12 And all the angels stood around the throne… “Glory to God in the highest, The angels ascribe praise to God in heaven for sending the Savior promised to Israel. Jesus’ birth reveals God’s majesty, faithfulness, and sovereign purpose in bringing redemption through His Son. Luk 19:38 “Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord!”… and on earth peace The peace announced is reconciliation with God, made possible through Christ. It reaches beyond political stability or the temporary order of Rome, bringing forgiveness, restored fellowship with God, and the assurance of His kingdom. Eph 2:14-17 For He Himself is our peace, who has made the two one… to men on whom His favor rests!” God’s favor rests on those who receive His grace through faith in Christ. The announcement extends God’s saving purpose beyond Israel to all who trust in the Savior born in Bethlehem. Luk 1:30 So the angel told her, “Do not be afraid, Mary,… When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, When the angels had completed their announcement of the Savior’s birth, they returned to heaven. Their departure confirmed that the message given to the shepherds came from God. Act 1:9-11 He had said this, they watched as He was taken up… the shepherds said to one another, The shepherds immediately responded to what they had heard. Though they were ordinary laborers watching their flocks outside Bethlehem, God chose them as the first witnesses of the Messiah’s birth. 2Ki 7:9 Finally, they said, “We are not doing what is right.… “Let us go to Bethlehem Bethlehem, the city of David, was the appointed birthplace of the promised Christ and the ancestral home of David’s family. Mic 5:2 But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, who are small… and see this thing that has happened, The shepherds did not treat the announcement as distant or uncertain. They went at once to witness the event God had made known to them. Jhn 1:39 “Come and see,” He replied. So they went and saw… which the Lord has made known to us.” They recognized that the Lord Himself had disclosed the news and acted in faith upon it. Psa 98:2 The LORD has proclaimed His salvation… So they hurried off The shepherds acted at once on the angel’s announcement, treating it as God’s reliable word. Though they were ordinary laborers, God entrusted them with the first public witness to the Messiah’s birth. Mat 28:8 So they hurried away from the tomb in fear and great joy,… and found Mary and Joseph In Bethlehem, as the angel had said, they found Jesus’ parents together with the child. Their presence there resulted from the census, while also placing the Messiah in the town appointed for David’s descendant. Mat 1:24-25 When Joseph woke up, he did as the angel of the Lord… and the Baby, Jesus had truly been born and was present among them in human flesh. The shepherds’ arrival confirmed the sign they had been given and made them eyewitnesses of the Savior’s birth. Mat 1:21 She will give birth to a Son, and you are to give Him… who was lying in the manger. The child lay in an animal feeding trough rather than a royal home. His humble circumstances revealed that the promised King had come in lowliness, yet exactly as God had announced. Isa 1:3 The ox knows its owner, and the donkey its master’s manger… After they had seen the Child, After they had seen the Child, the shepherds became the first witnesses to proclaim that the promised Savior had been born. Mat 2:11 On coming to the house, they saw the Child… they spread the message They did not keep the angel’s announcement to themselves. After seeing the Child, they told others what they had been told concerning Him. Their report proclaimed that God had fulfilled His promise by sending the promised Savior. Luk 8:39 Return home and describe how much God has done… they had received about Him. The message declared that the newborn Jesus was Savior, Christ, and Lord. The shepherds’ testimony began the public witness to His identity and mission, announcing that God’s salvation had come through the child born in Bethlehem. 1Co 11:23 For I received from the Lord what I also passed on to you:… And all who heard it The shepherds’ report quickly reached others in Bethlehem, where news commonly spread through households and public gatherings. Their humble standing made their role as witnesses especially striking. Luk 1:65-66 All their neighbors were filled with awe,… were amazed The people responded with wonder at the announcement and the circumstances surrounding the child’s birth. The news challenged ordinary expectations and pointed to God’s work among them. Act 2:12 Astounded and perplexed, they asked one another… at what the shepherds said to them. The shepherds testified to the angelic message and to finding the child exactly as they had been told. Their account confirmed that Jesus’ birth was no ordinary event, but the arrival of the promised Messiah. Jhn 4:39 Many of the Samaritans from that town believed in Jesus… But Mary treasured up all these things Mary carefully retained the reports of the shepherds and the extraordinary circumstances surrounding Jesus’ birth. As His mother, she recognized that these events marked the fulfillment of God’s promised salvation through the Messiah. Luk 1:66 And all who heard this wondered in their hearts… and pondered them in her heart. She reflected deeply on what God was revealing through her Son, seeking to understand the meaning of His birth and the work He would accomplish. Dan 7:28 As for me, Daniel, my thoughts troubled me greatly… The shepherds returned, After finding Mary, Joseph, and the newborn Jesus in the manger, the shepherds went back to their flocks. Their testimony rested on direct experience of God’s intervention in history. 1Jn 1:1-3 That which was from the beginning, which we have heard,… which was just as the angel had told them. Everything occurred according to God’s word. The fulfilled sign confirmed that Jesus was the promised Savior, Christ the Lord. Luk 1:26-38 In the sixth month, God sent the angel Gabriel…

Deu 31:24 When Moses had finished writing in a book… “Every firstborn male shall be consecrated to the Lord”), The firstborn belonged to God in remembrance of Israel’s deliverance from Egypt, when the Lord spared Israel’s firstborn at Passover. Jesus was formally dedicated according to this command, identifying Him with His people while foreshadowing His unique place as God’s Son and the sacrifice through whom redemption would come. Exo 13:2 “Consecrate to Me every firstborn male. Isa 49:1 Listen to Me, O islands; pay attention, O distant peoples:… to cause the rise and fall of many in Israel, Those who received Him in faith would be raised to salvation, while those who rejected Him would stumble under the judgment brought by their unbelief. His arrival would expose the true condition of many hearts within Israel. Act 4:10-12 let this be known to all of you and to all the people… and to be a sign that will be spoken against, Jesus would visibly reveal God’s truth and authority, yet He would face persistent opposition. His teaching, works, and claim to be the Messiah would provoke rejection from many, especially among Israel’s leaders. Isa 8:18 Here am I, and the children the LORD has given me… so that the thoughts of many hearts will be revealed— Jesus’ coming would expose the true response of people to God. Some would receive Him in faith, while others would reject Him, revealing pride, unbelief, or hostility beneath outward religion. His words and works would bring hidden motives into the open and force many to decide where they stood. 1Co 4:5 Therefore judge nothing before the appointed time;… and a sword will pierce your soul as well.” Simeon warned Mary that sharing in her Son’s mission would bring profound personal sorrow. She would witness His rejection, suffering, and crucifixion, bearing grief that would pierce her deeply. Her pain was bound to the cost of the Messiah’s saving work.
