Cornelius Sends for Peter

At Caesarea

Caesarea was the Roman administrative center of Judea, a major Mediterranean port built by Herod the Great and named for Caesar Augustus. Its population and institutions reflected strong Roman influence, making it an important setting for the Gospel’s advance beyond Jerusalem and Judea.

there was a man named Cornelius,

Cornelius was a Gentile whose household would become a decisive example of God granting salvation to those outside Israel. Though he served Rome, he feared God and responded obediently to the revelation he received.

a centurion

Cornelius commanded a unit of Roman soldiers and held a position of authority, discipline, and public responsibility. His conversion demonstrated that the Gospel was not limited by nationality, occupation, or social standing.

in what was called the Italian Regiment.

Cornelius belonged to a Roman cohort associated with Italy and stationed at Caesarea. The presence of this regiment reflects Rome’s military control of Judea, while Cornelius’s place within it highlights the Gospel’s reach into the Gentile world.

He and all his household were devout and God-fearing.

Cornelius was a Roman centurion stationed in Caesarea, yet he worshiped the God of Israel and led his household in reverence for Him. Though uncircumcised and outside the covenant people of Israel, he had rejected pagan worship and ordered his home around the fear of God. His household’s shared devotion reflects his influence as its leader and prepares for the gospel’s arrival among the Gentiles.

and prayed to God regularly.

Cornelius maintained a disciplined life of prayer, seeking God according to the light he had received. God heard his prayers and used them in bringing Peter to his home, where Cornelius and his household would hear the gospel and receive the Holy Spirit.

Cornelius, a Roman centurion and a God-fearing Gentile, responded to the angel with the awe common in direct encounters with God’s heavenly messengers. The appearance confirmed that God had taken notice of him and was about to direct him in a matter that would affect the early church.

Now send men to Joppa

Joppa, now known as Jaffa, was an ancient Mediterranean port south of Caesarea. From this coastal city, God directed events that would bring the gospel to Gentiles through Peter’s visit to Cornelius.

Simon Peter was staying in Joppa when Cornelius received this instruction. Though Cornelius was a Roman centurion and a Gentile, God arranged for him to hear the message of salvation from a Jewish apostle.

Peter, meaning “rock” in Greek, was a leading witness of Jesus’ resurrection and an appointed apostle. His arrival in Caesarea would confirm that God grants salvation to Gentiles who believe in Christ.

Peter was lodging in Joppa with a man whose work involved animal hides and regular contact with carcasses. Many Jews regarded tanning as ceremonially defiling, making Peter’s stay a fitting preparation for the vision that would challenge his former boundaries and lead him to the Gentile centurion Cornelius.

Simon’s home stood near the Mediterranean, where water was readily available for tanning. Joppa was an important coastal city and the same port from which Jonah had once fled from God’s command. From this setting, Peter would soon be sent beyond Jewish circles as the gospel began to reach Gentiles.

Peter saw animals regarded as both clean and unclean under the Law of Moses. The vision prepared him to understand that God was removing the barrier that had separated Jews from Gentiles and was extending the gospel to all peoples.

Lev 11:2-3 Say to the Israelites, ‘Of all the beasts of the earth,…
Deu 14:4-6 These are the animals that you may eat: The ox, the sheep…

Then a voice said to him:

kill and eat!”

The animals in the vision included those considered unclean under the Mosaic law. God used the command to show that the ceremonial food laws no longer governed His people and to prepare Peter to receive Gentiles whom God had made clean through faith in Christ.

Act 11:7-10 Then I heard a voice saying to me, ‘Get up, Peter, kill…
Deu 12:20-22 When the LORD your God expands your territory you may eat it…
Lev 11:2-3 Say to the Israelites, ‘Of all the beasts of the earth,…

“No, Lord!”

Peter responded at once, shocked by the command to eat animals forbidden under the Mosaic Law. Though he recognized the speaker’s authority, he struggled to understand how God’s instruction could fit with the laws he had faithfully observed.

Mat 16:22 Peter took Him aside and began to rebuke Him.…
Jhn 13:8 “Never shall You wash my feet!” Peter told Him.…
Luk 5:8 When Simon Peter saw this, he fell at Jesus’ knees.…

Peter answered.

Peter’s direct response reveals his active involvement in the vision. God was preparing him for the arrival of Cornelius’s messengers and for the unexpected call to enter a Gentile household.

Luk 9:20 “But what about you?” Jesus asked. “Who do you say I am?”…
Mrk 8:29 “But what about you?” Jesus asked. “Who do you say I am?”…
Mat 16:16 Simon Peter answered, “You are the Christ…

“I have never eaten anything impure or unclean.”

Peter had maintained the dietary distinctions required of Israel throughout his life. The vision would soon show him that God was not abolishing holiness, but teaching that Gentiles who fear Him are not to be treated as unclean or excluded from the gospel.

Act 11:8 “No, Lord,” I said, “for nothing impure or unclean”…
Mrk 7:19 because it does not enter his heart, but it goes…
Lev 11:47 You must distinguish between the unclean and the clean…

The voice spoke to him a second time:

God repeated the command so Peter would understand that the vision was deliberate. Raised under Israel’s dietary laws and accustomed to separation from Gentile practices, Peter needed clear direction before entering a Gentile household.

Jon 3:1 Then the word of the LORD came to Jonah a second time:
Gen 22:15-16 And the angel of the LORD called to Abraham from heaven…
1Ki 19:7 A second time the angel of the LORD returned…

“Do not call anything impure

God was not removing moral standards, but ending ceremonial distinctions that had separated Israel from other nations. Peter was not to regard Gentiles as defiling or excluded from God’s mercy.

Mrk 7:15 “Nothing that enters a man from the outside can defile him;…
Rom 14:14 I am convinced and fully persuaded in the Lord Jesus…
Tit 1:15 To the pure, all things are pure; but to the defiled…

that God has made clean.”

What God declared clean could no longer be treated as unclean. The vision prepared Peter to receive Cornelius and other Gentiles as people God would cleanse through faith, without requiring them first to become Jews.

Mrk 7:19 because it does not enter his heart, but it goes…
Act 15:9 He made no distinction between us and them,…
1Ti 4:4-5 For every creation of God is good, and nothing…

This happened three times,

The repeated vision established the certainty and importance of God’s instruction. It pressed Peter to recognize that God was removing the barrier between Jews and Gentiles, preparing him to receive Cornelius and his household.

1Sa 3:8-10 Once again, for the third time, the LORD called to Samuel.…
2Co 12:8 Three times I pleaded with the Lord to take it away from me.

and all at once the sheet was taken back up into heaven.

Its return to heaven confirmed that the vision came by God’s authority and had reached its conclusion. Peter was left to obey the revelation that God was calling Gentiles to Himself and that they were not to be regarded as unclean.

While Peter was puzzling over the meaning of the vision,

Jhn 20:15 “Woman, why are you weeping?” Jesus asked……
Jhn 18:4-7 Jesus, knowing all that was coming upon Him, stepped forward…

Peter asked for their purpose and heard of Cornelius’s vision and his desire to receive God’s message. The encounter opened the way for Peter’s journey to Caesarea, where God would make clear that the gospel was not restricted to Israel but was to be proclaimed to all nations.

Peter Visits Cornelius

The following day he arrived in Caesarea,

Caesarea, a Mediterranean port city built and enlarged by Herod the Great, served as the Roman administrative center of Judea. Named for Caesar Augustus, it represented Gentile political and cultural influence in the region. Peter’s journey from Joppa, about a day’s travel, shows his immediate response to God’s direction.

where Cornelius was expecting them

Cornelius had obeyed the angel’s instruction and waited confidently for Peter. As a Roman centurion who feared God, he had already shown reverence for the God of Israel, and the Lord had prepared him to receive the message of salvation through Christ.

and had called together his relatives and close friends.

Cornelius did not keep the expected message to himself. He gathered those nearest to him so that they also could hear Peter. The meeting would become a decisive opening of the Gospel ministry to Gentiles.

Luk 14:12 Then Jesus said to the man who had invited Him,…
Luk 15:6 comes home, and calls together his friends…

As Peter was about to enter,

Peter arrived in Caesarea at the home of Cornelius, a Roman centurion. By entering a Gentile household, Peter was crossing a longstanding Jewish social and ceremonial boundary, preparing to see that God’s salvation was not limited to Israel.

Jhn 18:16 But Peter stood outside at the door. Then the disciple…
Mat 8:8 The centurion answered, “Lord, I am not worthy…
Luk 7:6 So Jesus went with them. But when He was not far…

Cornelius met him

Cornelius had obeyed the instruction given through his vision and had gathered his household to hear Peter. Though a Roman officer, he feared God and recognized that Peter had been sent with a message from God.

Jhn 11:20 So when Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went out…
Exo 18:7 So Moses went out to meet his father-in-law…
Gen 33:4 Esau, however, ran to him and embraced him…

and fell at his feet

Cornelius responded with deep humility and reverence, treating Peter as one who stood in a uniquely sacred position.

Mrk 5:22 A synagogue leader named Jairus arrived, and seeing Jesus,…
2Ki 4:37 She came in, fell at his feet, and bowed to the ground.…
Luk 17:16 He fell facedown at Jesus’ feet in thanksgiving to Him…

to worship him.

Cornelius gave Peter honor that belongs to God alone. Peter immediately corrected him, making clear that he was only a man and a servant of God.

Mat 28:9 Suddenly Jesus met them and said, “Greetings!”…
Mat 2:11 On coming to the house, they saw the Child…
Jhn 9:38 “Lord, I believe,” he said. And he worshiped Jesus.

But Peter helped him up.

Cornelius had fallen before Peter in deep respect, yet Peter would not accept such honor. Though a Roman centurion with authority over others, Cornelius recognized that Peter had come as God’s messenger. Peter’s action showed that the gospel does not exalt one believer above another and that God was welcoming Gentiles into His people.

Act 3:7 Taking him by the right hand, Peter helped him up…
Act 9:41 Peter took her by the hand and helped her up.…
Mrk 1:31 So He went to her, took her by the hand…

“Stand up,” he said,

Peter firmly redirected Cornelius from any act that resembled worship. God alone is worthy of such reverence. The apostle’s authority came from the Lord, not from any divine status in himself.

Ezk 2:1 “Son of man,” He said to me, “stand up on your feet”…
Act 26:16 But get up and stand on your feet. For I have appeared…

“I am only a man myself.”

Peter acknowledged his shared humanity with Cornelius. He was an apostle and a witness of Christ, but he remained a man in need of God’s grace. His words made clear that no human servant of God should receive the honor belonging to God alone.

As Peter talked with him,

Peter continued speaking with Cornelius as he entered, treating the Roman centurion as one whom God had prepared to hear the gospel. Their meeting marked a decisive turning point in the Church’s witness to the Gentiles.

he went inside

Entering a Gentile home crossed customary Jewish boundaries, but Peter obeyed God’s instruction not to regard as unclean those whom He had made clean.

Mrk 1:29 As soon as Jesus and His companions had left the synagogue,…

and found many people gathered together.

Cornelius had assembled his relatives and close friends, showing that he expected God to speak through Peter. The gathering became the first major Gentile audience to hear the gospel directly from an apostle.

Mrk 2:2 they gathered in such large numbers that there was no more…
Luk 12:1 In the meantime, a crowd of many thousands had gathered,…
Mat 13:2 Such large crowds gathered around Him that He got into a boat…

He said to them,

Act 11:18 When they heard this, they had no further objections,…
Act 15:7-9 After much discussion, Peter got up and said to them…

“You know how unlawful it is for a Jew to associate with a foreigner or visit him.

Jewish tradition, based on interpretations of the Torah, strongly discouraged close fellowship with Gentiles, especially entering their homes, to preserve Israel’s distinct identity, maintain ritual purity, avoid idolatry, and prevent ceremonial defilement. This separation was cultural and religious; “unlawful” reflects traditional social and religious boundaries rather than an explicit Mosaic command.

Gal 2:12 For before certain men came from James, he used to eat…
Jhn 4:9 “You are a Jew,” said the woman. “How can You ask for…”…
Eph 2:14-18 For He Himself is our peace, who has made the two one…

But God has shown me

Through the vision at Joppa and the Spirit’s direction to accompany Cornelius’s messengers, Peter understood that God Himself was overturning his former assumptions.

Eph 3:5-6 which was not made known to men in other generations…
Gal 1:15-16 But when God, who set me apart from my mother’s womb…

God was not declaring all conduct acceptable, but revealing that Gentiles were not to be treated as excluded from His saving purpose. Cornelius and those with him could receive the gospel on the same basis as Jews: through faith in Jesus Christ.

Rom 14:14 I am convinced and fully persuaded in the Lord Jesus…
1Ti 4:4-5 For every creation of God is good, and nothing…

So when I was invited,

Cornelius had obeyed the angelic message to send for Peter, and Peter had followed the Spirit’s direction to go with the men from Caesarea. A Jewish apostle entering the home of a Gentile Roman officer crossed a long-standing social and religious boundary.

Gen 24:58 They called Rebekah and asked her, “Will you go with this man?”…
Mat 22:3-4 He sent his servants to call those he had invited…

I came without objection.

Peter had learned through God’s vision that he must not regard people whom God calls as unclean. His obedience showed that the Gospel was not restricted to Israel but was now being openly brought to the Gentiles.

Psa 119:60 I hurried without hesitating to keep Your commandments.
Luk 5:28 and Levi got up, left everything, and followed Him.
1Sa 3:10 Then the LORD came and stood there, calling as before,…

I ask, then, why have you sent for me?”

Peter asked Cornelius to explain the purpose of his summons, giving him opportunity to recount the vision God had given him. Their meeting revealed God’s deliberate work in bringing the message of salvation to Cornelius, his household, and the Gentile world.

Mat 20:32 Jesus stopped and called them. “What do you want Me to do”…

Cornelius answered:

A Roman centurion of the Italian Regiment, Cornelius was a Gentile who feared the God of Israel and was well regarded by the Jewish community. His account confirms that God had prepared him to receive Peter and that the gospel was now being extended to Gentiles.

Therefore send to Joppa for Simon, who is called Peter.

Joppa, modern Jaffa, was an ancient Mediterranean port and an important center for travel and trade. Peter was staying there after ministering in the region. Cornelius was instructed to summon him because God had chosen Peter to bring the gospel message to this Gentile household, opening a decisive chapter in the church’s mission beyond Israel.

Simon’s work with animal hides made his trade ceremonially objectionable to many Jews. Peter’s willingness to stay in his home showed that God was already preparing him to confront traditional barriers of ritual separation. The seaside location placed him near the port from which he would soon travel to Caesarea and proclaim Christ to Cornelius and his household.

Cornelius and his household believed Peter’s testimony concerning Christ. Their inclusion showed that salvation through Jesus was open to Gentiles as well as Jews.

All the circumcised believers who had accompanied Peter

Jewish Christians from Joppa traveled with Peter to Caesarea and witnessed what occurred in Cornelius’s house. Their presence provided reliable testimony that God had acted among Gentiles.

They had not expected uncircumcised Gentiles to receive the same blessing God had given Jewish believers. The event challenged long-held distinctions between Jews and Gentiles within the covenant community.

that the gift of the Holy Spirit

The Spirit’s presence demonstrated God’s acceptance of Cornelius and those gathered with him. As at Pentecost, the gift confirmed that they belonged to Christ and had received the promised new-covenant blessing.

God gave the Spirit freely and visibly, apart from Jewish ceremonial requirements. The outpouring showed that Gentile inclusion was God’s initiative, not Peter’s decision alone.

The Gentiles were received as full members of the church through faith in Christ. Their reception of the Spirit established that salvation was not limited by ethnicity or circumcision.

For they heard them speaking in tongues

As at Pentecost, the Gentile believers received the Holy Spirit in a visible and audible way. Their speaking in tongues gave the Jewish Christians with Peter clear evidence that God had granted the same gift to Gentiles who believed in Christ. No rite or ethnic distinction stood between them and full inclusion among God’s people.

Their praise showed that the Spirit’s work led them to worship God rather than exalt themselves. The Gentiles responded to the gospel with the same faith and joy seen among the first believers in Jerusalem.

Then Peter said,

Peter recognized that God had settled the question through the Spirit’s direct action. Having been prepared by God’s vision and Cornelius’s testimony, he could no longer treat Gentile believers as unclean or exclude them from baptism and fellowship.

“Can anyone withhold the water to baptize these people?

Peter asks this after Cornelius, his relatives, and close friends receive the Holy Spirit while hearing the gospel. God’s action makes clear that Gentiles who believe in Christ are to be received into the church without submitting first to Jewish customs. Baptism publicly identifies them with Christ and confirms their inclusion among His people.

They have received the Holy Spirit just as we have!”

Their experience matches that of the Jewish believers at Pentecost. The same Holy Spirit given to the apostles has been given to Gentiles, showing that salvation is granted by God’s grace apart from ethnic background or the works of the Law. Peter therefore commands that they be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ.

So he ordered that they be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ.

Peter commanded the baptism of Cornelius, his relatives, and close friends after the Holy Spirit came upon them, confirming that God had received these Gentiles as believers. Their baptism publicly identified them with Jesus Christ and with the Church. God’s gift of the Spirit showed that salvation was not restricted to the Jewish people but was being extended to Gentiles who believed the gospel. Peter’s willingness to baptize them marked a decisive break with longstanding Jewish-Gentile separation and demonstrated the unity of all believers in Christ.

Then they asked him to stay for a few days.

Cornelius and his household desired further instruction from Peter and welcomed him into their fellowship. Peter’s stay in a Gentile home showed the practical change brought by God’s work among them: those formerly divided by religious and cultural barriers were now joined as fellow believers.
