Jesus Teaches at the Feast

After this,

Jesus continued His ministry following the events surrounding the feeding of the five thousand and the teaching in Capernaum that led many disciples to withdraw.

Jhn 6:1 After this, Jesus crossed to the other side…
Jhn 6:66 From that time on many of His disciples turned back…
Jhn 5:1 Some time later there was a feast of the Jews,…

Jesus traveled throughout Galilee.

Galilee remained the primary setting for His public ministry, where He taught, healed, and prepared His disciples among the towns of northern Israel.

Mrk 1:39 So He went throughout Galilee, preaching in their synagogues…
Luk 4:14-15 Jesus returned to Galilee in the power of the Spirit…

He did not want to travel in Judea,

Judea, with Jerusalem as its religious center, had become increasingly hostile to Him. Jesus did not expose Himself to arrest before the time appointed for His death.

Jhn 11:53 So from that day on they plotted to kill Him.

However,

However, the growing hostility of the Jewish leaders and the skepticism of Jesus’ brothers form the backdrop for what follows. The approaching festival would draw crowds to Jerusalem and bring Jesus’ public ministry into sharper conflict with those seeking to kill Him.

Jhn 2:4 “Woman, what is that to you and to Me?” Jesus replied.…
Jhn 8:20 He spoke these words while teaching in the temple courts…

the Jewish Feast of Tabernacles

Also called Sukkot, the Jewish Feast of Tabernacles commemorated Israel’s wilderness journey and God’s care for His people. During the weeklong celebration, Israelites lived in temporary shelters, and Jerusalem filled with pilgrims who worshiped, offered sacrifices, and gave thanks for the harvest.

Held in the fall, the feast occurred about six months before the Passover at which Jesus would be crucified. Its nearness explains the journey to Jerusalem and sets the stage for Jesus’ public teaching during the festival.

So Jesus’ brothers said to Him,

Jesus’ half-brothers—James, Joseph, Simon, and Judas—were sons of Mary and Joseph. Though they had grown up with Him, they had not yet believed that He was the Messiah. Their unbelief revealed the painful reality that Jesus faced rejection even within His own household.

Luk 8:19-21 Then Jesus’ mother and brothers came to see Him…

“Leave here and go to Judea,

Judea and Jerusalem stood at the center of Israel’s religious life, especially during the feast season. Jesus’ brothers urged Him to go where larger crowds and religious leaders could witness His ministry, apparently challenging Him to establish His claims publicly.

Jhn 11:7-8 He said to the disciples, “Let us go back”…
Mat 19:1 When Jesus had finished saying these things…
Mrk 10:1 Then Jesus left that place and went into Judea…

so that Your disciples there may see the works You are doing.

Jesus had followers in Judea as well as Galilee, and His miracles had become widely known. His brothers treated His works as evidence to be displayed before the public, yet Jesus performed signs according to the Father’s purpose, revealing His identity and calling people to faith.

Jhn 14:11 Believe Me that I am in the Father and the Father…
Jhn 5:36 But I have testimony more substantial than that of John.…

For no one who wants to be known publicly acts in secret.

Jesus’ brothers measured His ministry by ordinary expectations of public influence and honor. They assumed that miraculous works should be displayed in Jerusalem, where large crowds and religious leaders could see them. They did not yet understand that Jesus acted according to the Father’s will rather than seeking human recognition.

Since You are doing these things,

They had seen or heard of Jesus’ works and recognized that they drew attention. Yet they regarded His miracles chiefly as grounds for public acceptance, not as signs revealing His identity and authority. Their words show that they had not believed in Him or understood the purpose of His mission.

Jhn 10:25 “I already told you,” Jesus replied “but you did not believe…

show Yourself to the world.”

The brothers urged Jesus to go openly to the Feast of Tabernacles and establish Himself before the nation. Many expected the Messiah to appear with public power and bring political deliverance. Jesus would reveal Himself in God’s appointed way and time, ultimately through His death, resurrection, and exaltation.

For even His own brothers

Jesus’ brothers—James, Joseph, Simon, and Judas—were the sons of Mary and Joseph and had grown up with Him in Nazareth. Even those closest to Him did not automatically receive His ministry.

They did not accept His identity or mission despite His teaching and works. Their unbelief reflected the wider rejection He faced among His own people. After His resurrection, James and others came to faith, and James became a leader in the Jerusalem church.

The world cannot hate you,

Jesus’ brothers did not yet believe in Him and remained at home within the ordinary patterns and expectations of society. Because they had not openly identified with His mission or challenged the unbelief around them, the hostile world had no reason to oppose them.

Go up to the feast on your own.

Jesus’ brothers urged Him to join them at the Feast of Tabernacles, a major pilgrimage festival in Jerusalem commemorating God’s care for Israel during the wilderness years. They did not yet believe in Him and viewed the feast as an opportunity for public recognition. Jesus refused to be directed by their expectations or to seek attention on human terms.

Exo 34:23 Three times a year all your males are to appear…
Luk 2:41-42 Every year His parents went to Jerusalem for the Feast…

I am not going up to this feast,

He would not go with them publicly or according to their plan. Jerusalem’s leaders were already seeking to kill Him, and a public arrival with His brothers would have invited premature confrontation.

Jesus acted according to the Father’s appointed schedule. The time for His public suffering, death, resurrection, and glorification had not yet arrived. Though He later went to the feast privately, He did so in obedience to God’s will rather than under pressure from His family.

So the Jews were looking for Him at the feast

“The Jews” refers primarily to the religious leaders in Jerusalem. During the Feast of Tabernacles, when pilgrims gathered to remember God’s provision for Israel in the wilderness, they were watching for Jesus’ arrival. His miracles and teaching had stirred public attention and challenged their authority, and they intended to confront Him.

Jhn 11:55-56 Now the Jewish Passover was near, and many people…
Jhn 12:21-22 They came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee,…

and asking, “Where is He?”

Their search carried growing hostility, though others in the crowds were also wondering about Him with curiosity or faith. The question reveals the tension surrounding Jesus as He came openly to Jerusalem despite the leaders’ increasing opposition.

Jhn 9:12 “Where is He?” they asked. “I do not know,” he answered.
Mat 2:2 Where is the One who has been born King of the Jews?…

Many in the crowds were whispering about Him.

At the Feast of Tabernacles, Jerusalem was filled with pilgrims, and public discussion of Jesus carried risk because the religious leaders opposed Him. The people spoke quietly, divided by uncertainty and fear of the authorities.

Those who had seen His works and heard His teaching recognized His compassion, righteousness, and authority. They regarded Him as a man whose ministry brought healing and truth.

Jhn 10:11 I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd…
Mrk 10:18 “Why do you call Me good?” Jesus replied.…

But others replied, “No, He deceives the people.”

Others accepted the leaders’ suspicion that Jesus misled the nation and threatened established religious authority. The divided response revealed the growing conflict surrounding Him, which would soon lead to open rejection and accusation.

Yet no one would speak publicly about Him

Debate about Jesus continued among the crowds, but few were willing to identify themselves openly with Him. His teaching and works had stirred deep division, and public support could bring serious consequences from the religious authorities.

John uses this term here for the influential Jewish leaders who opposed Jesus, including those connected with the temple authorities and the Sanhedrin. They could threaten exclusion from synagogue life and other social penalties. Their hostility toward Jesus grew as His public ministry challenged their authority and exposed their unbelief.

The Jews were amazed

The religious leaders in Jerusalem were struck by the authority and depth of Jesus’ teaching during the Feast of Tabernacles. Though He came from Galilee and had not followed the expected path of rabbinic education, He spoke with a mastery of Scripture that exceeded their expectations.

Their question revealed their inability to account for His wisdom by ordinary means. Jesus taught from the authority given by the Father, displaying the wisdom fitting for the Son who came to reveal God’s truth.

Jhn 8:28 So Jesus said, “When you have lifted up the Son of Man,…
Jhn 12:49 I have not spoken on My own, but the Father who sent Me…

“My teaching is not My own,”

Jesus did not present Himself as an independent teacher offering merely human insight. His instruction came in humble submission to the Father and revealed the perfect unity of purpose between the Father and the Son. Unlike religious leaders who elevated human traditions, Jesus spoke with the authority of the One who had sent Him.

During the Feast of Tabernacles, the Jewish leaders questioned how Jesus possessed such knowledge without formal rabbinic training. In Jerusalem, the center of Israel’s worship and religious instruction, His answer directly challenged their assumptions about authority and learning.

If anyone desires to do His will,

A sincere readiness to obey God opens the way for spiritual discernment. Jesus addresses those willing to submit to the Father’s revealed will rather than those seeking grounds to reject Him.

Mat 7:21 Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter…
Heb 10:36 You need to persevere, so that after you have done…

he will know whether My teaching is from God

Those who genuinely seek to obey God will recognize that Jesus’ teaching agrees with the Father’s character, truth, and purposes. His words carry divine authority and identify Him as the Messiah sent by God.

Jhn 12:49-50 I have not spoken on My own, but the Father who sent Me…
Jhn 17:8 For I have given them the words You gave Me,…
1Th 2:13 when you received the word of God that you heard from us…

Jesus contrasts His ministry with teachers who promote their own ideas or seek personal honor. He speaks as the Son sent by the Father, declaring what He has received from Him.

Jhn 8:28-29 So Jesus said, “When you have lifted up the Son of Man,…
Jhn 14:10 Do you not believe that I am in the Father…

He who speaks on his own authority seeks his own glory,

Jesus contrasts self-appointed teachers with those who faithfully represent God. Many religious leaders in Judea valued public recognition, influence, and honor, but self-promotion revealed a concern for personal status rather than God’s will. Seeking one’s own glory can distort both teaching and judgment.

Jesus did not act independently of the Father. His teaching, works, and mission consistently fulfilled the Father’s purpose. He came not to establish His own human reputation but to reveal the Father and accomplish the work for which He was sent.

Has not Moses given you the law?

Deu 33:4 the law that Moses gave us, the possession of the assembly…

Gal 5:3 I testify to every man who gets himself circumcised…

Why are you trying to kill Me?”

Jesus exposed the hostility already forming against Him among Jerusalem’s leaders. Their intention to kill Him revealed that they had not recognized the One sent by God, though the Law itself pointed forward to Him.

Mrk 3:6 At this, the Pharisees went out and began plotting…
Mat 12:14 But the Pharisees went out and plotted…

“You have a demon,”

The crowd dismissed Jesus’ knowledge of the leaders’ murderous intentions, saying, “You have a demon.” Their accusation reflected hostility toward Him and ignorance of the growing opposition among the authorities.

Jhn 8:52 Now we know that You have a demon!” declared the Jews…
Jhn 8:48 The Jews answered Him, “Are we not right to say…
Jhn 10:20 Many of them said, “He is demon-possessed and insane.”…

the crowd replied.

Many in the crowd were likely pilgrims and residents who had not been included in the leaders’ plans. They reacted from ignorance of the private discussions and resentment already directed toward Jesus.

Jhn 12:34 The crowd replied, “We have heard from the Law…
Mat 21:11 The crowds replied, “This is Jesus, the prophet…

“Who is trying to kill You?”

The question reveals how little the general populace understood about the leaders’ determination to silence Him. Jesus’ conflict with the authorities was already moving toward the suffering and rejection appointed for the Messiah.

Jhn 8:37 I know you are Abraham’s descendants, but you are trying…
Jhn 5:18 Because of this, the Jews tried all the harder to kill Him.…
Jhn 11:53 So from that day on they plotted to kill Him.

Jesus answered them,

Jhn 5:17-18 But Jesus answered them, “To this very day…
Mat 12:12 How much more valuable is a man than a sheep!…
Luk 6:9 Then Jesus said to them, “I ask you, which is lawful…

Mat 12:23 The crowds were astounded and asked, “Could this be…
Luk 4:36 All the people were overcome with amazement…

But because Moses gave you circumcision,

Moses incorporated circumcision into the law of Israel, though God had established it earlier as the sign of His covenant with Abraham.

Lev 12:3 And on the eighth day the flesh of the boy’s foreskin……
Num 9:14 If a foreigner dwelling among you wants to observe…

you circumcise a boy on the Sabbath

When the eighth day fell on the Sabbath, circumcision was performed as commanded, showing that obedience to the covenant requirement was not considered a violation of Sabbath observance.

Luk 2:21 When the eight days before His circumcision had passed,…
Mat 12:11-12 He replied, “If one of you has a sheep and it falls…
Mrk 3:4 And He asked them, “Which is lawful on the Sabbath:…

(not that it is from Moses, but from the patriarchs.)

Circumcision began with Abraham and was continued through Isaac and Jacob before Moses received the law at Sinai. Jesus reminds His hearers that their accepted practice rested on a covenant older than the Mosaic Law.

Gen 17:9-14 God also said to Abraham, “You must keep My covenant—…
Act 7:8 Then God gave Abraham the covenant of circumcision…
Rom 4:11-12 And he received the sign of circumcision as a seal…

If a boy can be circumcised on the Sabbath

Circumcision marked Israel’s covenant relationship with God and was required for every male child on the eighth day. When that day fell on the Sabbath, the command was still carried out, showing that obedience to God’s covenant requirement took precedence over the ordinary prohibition of work.

Lev 12:3 And on the eighth day the flesh of the boy’s foreskin……
Gen 17:12 Generation after generation, every male must be circumcised…
Luk 2:21 When the eight days before His circumcision had passed,…

so that the law of Moses will not be broken,

The religious leaders accepted circumcision on the Sabbath because failing to perform it would violate the Law. Yet they objected when Jesus restored a man’s health on the Sabbath, though His work likewise fulfilled God’s purposes.

Mat 5:17-18 Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law……
Mat 12:5 Or haven’t you read in the Law that on the Sabbath…
Num 28:9-10 On the Sabbath day, present two unblemished lambs…

why are you angry with Me for making the whole man well on the Sabbath?

Jesus contrasts the limited physical act of circumcision with the complete healing He gave. His restoration of the man was not a violation of the Sabbath but an expression of God’s mercy and authority. Their anger exposed an inconsistent judgment and their refusal to recognize the One sent by God.

Jhn 5:9-18 Immediately the man was made well, and he picked up his mat…
Mrk 3:1-6 Once again Jesus entered the synagogue,…
Luk 6:6-11 On another Sabbath Jesus entered the synagogue…

Stop judging by outward appearances,

The crowd and leaders evaluated Jesus by visible circumstances, including His Galilean background and their traditions about Sabbath observance. They ignored that He had healed a man completely on the Sabbath, an act of mercy consistent with God’s purposes. Their judgment rested on partial facts and human standards rather than His works and teaching.

1Sa 16:7 But the LORD said to Samuel, “Do not consider his appearance…
Jas 2:1-4 My brothers, as you hold out your faith…
Jhn 8:15 You judge according to the flesh; I judge no one.

and start judging justly.”

Just judgment considers the whole matter according to truth and God’s standard, without prejudice or favoritism. Jesus exposed the inconsistency of permitting circumcision on the Sabbath while condemning His healing, calling them to recognize the righteousness of His work and the authority of the One who sent Him.

Is Jesus the Christ?

Then some of the people of Jerusalem began to say,

Residents of the city were especially familiar with the tensions surrounding Jesus. Living near the temple and its leadership, they had likely heard of the authorities’ opposition to Him and recognized the significance of His public teaching during the feast.

Mat 21:10 When Jesus had entered Jerusalem, the whole city was stirred…
Jhn 12:17-19 Meanwhile, many people who had been with Jesus…
Act 2:12 Astounded and perplexed, they asked one another…

“Isn’t this the man they are trying to kill?

Their question exposes how widely known the leaders’ hostility had become. Jesus had openly challenged unbelief and false religious authority, and the rulers had already sought to silence Him. Yet He continued teaching publicly in Jerusalem, revealing both the leaders’ failure to act openly and God’s sovereign control over the timing of His death.

Jhn 5:18 Because of this, the Jews tried all the harder to kill Him.…
Mrk 3:6 At this, the Pharisees went out and began plotting…
Jhn 11:53 So from that day on they plotted to kill Him.

Yet here He is, speaking publicly,

Jesus teaches openly in the temple during the Feast of Tabernacles, though the authorities had sought an opportunity to kill Him. His public appearance stands in contrast to the caution urged by His brothers and displays His authority and unwavering purpose.

Jhn 18:20 “I have spoken openly to the world,” Jesus answered.…
Mrk 14:49 Every day I was with you, teaching in the temple courts.…
Mat 26:55 At that time Jesus said to the crowd, “Have you come out…

and they are not saying anything to Him.

The leaders do not arrest or challenge Him openly, likely because of the gathered crowds and the divided opinions concerning Him. Their restraint also allows His ministry to continue according to God’s appointed time.

Mat 22:46 No one was able to answer a word, and from that day on…
Mrk 12:34 When Jesus saw that the man had answered wisely,…
Luk 20:40 And they did not dare to question Him any further.

Have the rulers truly recognized that this is the Christ?

The crowd wonders whether the rulers’ silence means they have concluded that Jesus is the promised Messiah. Their question reveals the growing public awareness of His claims and works, even as the rulers remain unwilling to acknowledge Him.

Jhn 12:42 Nevertheless, many of the leaders believed in Him.…
Act 13:27 The people of Jerusalem and their rulers…
1Co 2:8 None of the rulers of this age understood it.…

But we know where this man is from.

Jerusalem’s people knew Jesus as a Galilean from Nazareth, the son of Joseph and Mary. Their familiarity with His earthly family and hometown became a reason to dismiss His claim to be the Messiah.

Jhn 6:42 They were asking, “Is this not Jesus, the son of Joseph…
Mat 13:55 Isn’t this the carpenter’s son? Isn’t His mother’s…
Mrk 6:3 Isn’t this the carpenter, the son of Mary…

When the Christ comes,

Many Jews expected the Messiah (“Anointed One”) to appear in a manner that would be sudden, unmistakable, and beyond ordinary human explanation. They looked for Israel’s promised King, who would establish righteousness and deliver His people.

Jhn 4:25 The woman said, “I know that Messiah” (called Christ)…
Mat 11:3 ask Him, “Are You the One who was to come?”…
Luk 7:19 So John called two of his disciples and sent them…

no one will know where He is from.”

Their tradition led them to assume that the Messiah’s origin would be hidden. They failed to recognize that Jesus’ birthplace, lineage, works, and teaching fulfilled God’s revealed promises, while His true origin was from the Father.

Jhn 8:14 Jesus replied, “Even if I testify about Myself”…
Jhn 8:23 Then He told them, “You are from below; I am from above.…
Jhn 8:19 “You do not know Me or My Father,” Jesus answered.…

Then Jesus, still teaching in the temple courts, cried out,

During the Feast of Tabernacles, Jesus taught publicly in the temple, where pilgrims and religious leaders gathered. His cry drew attention to the seriousness of what He was about to reveal.

Jhn 12:44 Then Jesus cried out, “Whoever believes in Me…
Jhn 8:20 He spoke these words while teaching in the temple courts…
Jhn 18:20 “I have spoken openly to the world,” Jesus answered.…

“You know Me, and you know where I am from.

The crowds knew Jesus as a man from Galilee and were familiar with His earthly background. Yet their knowledge did not reach the truth of His identity or His heavenly origin.

Jhn 8:14 Jesus replied, “Even if I testify about Myself”…
Jhn 6:42 They were asking, “Is this not Jesus, the son of Joseph…
Mat 13:55 Isn’t this the carpenter’s son? Isn’t His mother’s…

I have not come of My own accord,

Jesus had not appeared as a self-appointed teacher or prophet. He came in obedience to the Father’s purpose and authority.

Jhn 8:42 Jesus said to them, “If God were your Father,…
Jhn 6:38 For I have come down from heaven, not to do My own will…
Jhn 5:30 I can do nothing by Myself; I judge only as I hear. And My judgment is just,…

but He who sent Me is true.

The One who sent Him is the true God, faithful in all He declares and accomplishes. Jesus’ mission rested on the Father’s authority, not public opinion or human recognition.

Jhn 8:26 I have much to say about you and much to judge…
Jhn 3:33 Whoever accepts His testimony has certified…
Jhn 17:3 Now this is eternal life, that they may know You…

You do not know Him,

Though many present claimed devotion to God and knew the Scriptures, they did not truly know the Father because they rejected the Son He had sent.

Jhn 8:19 “You do not know Me or My Father,” Jesus answered.…
Jhn 16:3 They will do these things because they have not known…
Mat 11:27 All things have been entrusted to Me by My Father.…

but I know Him,

Jesus speaks with authority as the Son who has perfect knowledge of the Father. The crowd and religious leaders claimed to know God through the Law, yet many rejected the One standing before them. Jesus’ knowledge is personal, eternal, and inseparable from His identity.

Jhn 8:55 You do not know Him, but I know Him…
Jhn 10:15 just as the Father knows Me and I know the Father.…
Mat 11:27 All things have been entrusted to Me by My Father.…

because I am from Him

He declares that His origin is with God, not merely in Nazareth or through human ancestry. Though He had entered the world as a man, He existed with the Father before His earthly birth and shares the divine nature.

Jhn 8:42 Jesus said to them, “If God were your Father,…
Jhn 16:28 I came from the Father and entered the world.…
Jhn 13:3 Jesus knew that the Father had delivered all things…

and He sent Me.”

Jesus came by the Father’s command to carry out His appointed work. He was not a self-appointed teacher or political Messiah, but the Son sent to reveal God and accomplish salvation.

Jhn 12:49 I have not spoken on My own, but the Father who sent Me…
Jhn 14:24 Whoever does not love Me does not keep My words.…
Jhn 8:16 But even if I do judge, My judgment is true,…

So they tried to seize Him,

The religious authorities sought to arrest Jesus because His teaching exposed their unbelief and challenged their authority. Yet they could not seize Him, because His appointed time had not yet come.

Jhn 17:1 When Jesus had spoken these things, He lifted up His eyes…

Many in the crowd, however, believed in Him

Jesus’ teaching and miracles persuaded many ordinary people that He was the promised Messiah. Their response stood in sharp contrast to the growing hostility of the religious leaders, who rejected the evidence before them.

Jhn 2:23 While He was in Jerusalem at the Passover Feast,…
Jhn 8:30 As Jesus spoke these things, many believed in Him.
Jhn 11:45 Therefore many of the Jews who had come to Mary,…

will He perform more signs than this man?”

Jesus had performed works that testified to His identity and authority. The crowd recognized that no future claimant to the title of Christ could reasonably offer greater evidence than the signs Jesus had already done.

Jhn 3:2 He came to Jesus at night and said, “Rabbi,…
Jhn 9:16 Because of this, some of the Pharisees said…
Jhn 9:33 If this man were not from God, He could do no such thing.”

When the Pharisees heard the crowd whispering these things about Jesus,

The Pharisees became alarmed as the crowd debated Jesus’ identity. Some wondered whether He was the promised Messiah, while others remained uncertain. Such public discussion threatened the religious leaders’ influence and raised fears that messianic expectations could provoke Roman intervention.

Mat 12:23-24 The crowds were astounded and asked, “Could this be…

Jhn 11:47-48 Then the chief priests and Pharisees convened the Sanhedrin…

they and the chief priests sent officers to arrest Him.

Though divided in their beliefs and interests, the Pharisees and chief priests united against Jesus because His teaching exposed their hypocrisy and challenged their authority. The officers were temple guards sent to seize Him in the temple courts. Their effort marked an escalation in the leaders’ opposition and moved events toward the suffering and rejection foretold of the Messiah.

Jhn 18:3 So Judas brought a band of soldiers and officers…
Mat 26:47-50 While Jesus was still speaking, Judas, one of the Twelve,…

So Jesus said,

During the Feast of Tabernacles, Jesus continued to speak openly despite growing opposition from the religious leaders. His words revealed both His authority and the approaching end of His public ministry.

Jhn 12:49 I have not spoken on My own, but the Father who sent Me…
Jhn 14:10 Do you not believe that I am in the Father…
Jhn 18:37 “Then You are a king!” Pilate said. You say that I am a king…

“I am with you only a little while longer,

Jesus would return to the Father, who had sent Him into the world. His mission began with the Father and would conclude in His presence.

You will look for Me,

At this, the Jews said to one another,

Living Water

On the last and greatest day of the feast,

Jesus spoke during the Feast of Tabernacles, when Israel remembered God’s care in the wilderness and prayed for the rains needed for the coming year. Water was prominently associated with the festival through public ceremonies and prayers, making His words especially significant.

Lev 23:36 For seven days you are to present a food offering…
Num 29:35 On the eighth day you are to hold a solemn assembly;…
Neh 8:18 Day after day, from the first day to the last…

Jesus stood up and called out in a loud voice,

Jesus publicly interrupted the gathering with an urgent declaration. In Jewish teaching, rabbis commonly sat to instruct, but His standing and loud voice drew attention to the authority, public significance, and urgency of His invitation.

Jhn 12:44-46 Then Jesus cried out, “Whoever believes in Me…
Act 2:14 Then Peter stood up with the Eleven, lifted up his voice,…
Isa 58:1 Cry aloud, do not hold back! Raise your voice…

Rev 21:6 And He told me, “It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega,…

Whoever believes in Me,

Jesus extends His promise to all who place personal trust in Him as the Messiah and Son of God. During the Feast of Tabernacles, when water ceremonies recalled God’s provision in the wilderness, He presents Himself as the source of lasting spiritual life.

Jhn 6:35 Jesus answered, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to Me…
Jhn 3:16 For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son…
Rom 10:11 It is just as the Scripture says: “Anyone who believes…

as the Scripture has said:

The Old Testament repeatedly portrays God’s future blessing as life-giving water poured out upon His people. Jesus fulfills these promises, bringing the salvation and spiritual renewal anticipated by the prophets.

Isa 44:3 For I will pour water on the thirsty land,…
Isa 58:11 The LORD will always guide you; He will satisfy you…
Jol 2:28-29 And afterward, I will pour out My Spirit on all people.…

‘Streams of living water will flow from within him.’”

Those who believe in Christ receive the Holy Spirit, whose indwelling presence brings new life and produces blessing beyond the believer. The promised water is not temporary refreshment but the continuing work of God within those who belong to Christ.

Division over Jesus

On hearing these words,

On hearing Jesus’ teaching in the temple during the Feast of Tabernacles, especially His invitation to receive living water, the crowd debated His identity more intensely.

Act 2:37 When the people heard this, they were cut to the heart…
Jhn 10:19 Again there was division among the Jews.…
Luk 4:28 On hearing this, all the people in the synagogue…

some of the people said,

The people were divided. Some recognized that His teaching and works set Him apart from other religious leaders.

Mat 16:14 They replied, “Some say John the Baptist; …
Mrk 8:28 They replied, “Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah”…
Luk 9:19 They replied, “Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah;…

“This is truly the Prophet.”

They identified Jesus with the promised prophet like Moses, sent by God to speak His word. Though they recognized His authority, many had not yet understood that He was also the Messiah.

Jhn 6:14 When the people saw the sign that Jesus had performed,…
Jhn 1:21 “Then who are you?” they inquired. “Are you Elijah?”…
Deu 18:15 The LORD your God will raise up for you a prophet like me…

Others declared, “This is the Christ.”

The crowd was divided over Jesus’ identity. Some recognized that His teaching, works, and authority pointed to Him as the promised Messiah, or Christ, meaning “Anointed One,” the anointed King descended from David.

Jhn 1:41 He first found his brother Simon and told him,…
Mat 16:16 Simon Peter answered, “You are the Christ…
Jhn 11:27 “Yes, Lord,” she answered, “I believe that You are…

But still others asked, “How can the Christ come from Galilee?

Many assumed Jesus came from Galilee because He was raised in Nazareth. They did not know that He had been born in Bethlehem, fulfilling the prophecy that the Messiah would come from David’s city. Their objection revealed how incomplete knowledge of Jesus’ background shaped their judgment.

Mic 5:2 But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, who are small…
Mat 2:4-6 And when he had assembled all the chief priests…
Luk 2:4-7 So Joseph also went up from Nazareth in Galilee to Judea…

Doesn’t the Scripture say

The crowd appeals to the Hebrew Scriptures and the widely held Jewish expectation that the Messiah’s identity would agree with God’s revealed promises.

Jhn 10:35 If he called them gods to whom the word of God came—…
Jhn 5:39 You pore over the Scriptures because you presume that…
Luk 24:44 Jesus said to them, “These are the words I spoke to you…

that the Christ will come from the line of David

God promised David an enduring royal house, and Israel expected the Messiah to be David’s descendant and rightful King.

2Sa 7:12-13 And when your days are fulfilled and you rest…
Jer 23:5 Behold, the days are coming, declares the LORD,…
Rom 1:3 regarding His Son, who was a descendant of David…

and from Bethlehem,

Bethlehem in Judea was identified as the Messiah’s birthplace. Though small and politically insignificant, it was closely associated with David and God’s covenant promises.

Mic 5:2 But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, who are small…
Mat 2:5-6 “In Bethlehem in Judea,” they replied,…
Luk 2:4-7 So Joseph also went up from Nazareth in Galilee to Judea…

the village where David lived?”

David was born, raised, and anointed in Bethlehem before becoming king. The people recognized that the Messiah was expected to share both David’s lineage and his connection to Bethlehem.

1Sa 17:12 Now David was the son of a man named Jesse, an Ephrathite…
1Sa 16:18 One of the servants answered, “I have seen a son of Jesse…
1Sa 16:1 Now the LORD said to Samuel, How long are you going to mourn…

So there was division in the crowd

Jesus’ words and works produced sharply different responses. Some recognized the signs pointing to Him as the promised Messiah, while others rejected Him because He did not fit their expectations of a political deliverer. His ministry exposed unbelief and forced the people to consider His true identity.

Luk 12:51 Do you think that I have come to bring peace to the earth?…
Mat 10:34-36 Do not assume that I have come to bring peace to the earth;…
Luk 2:34-35 Then Simeon blessed them and said to His mother Mary:…

because of Jesus.

The disagreement centered on Jesus Himself, not merely on differing opinions. His authority, teaching, and claims confronted the religious assumptions of the crowd and revealed the division between faith and rejection.

Jhn 9:16 Because of this, some of the Pharisees said…
Jhn 10:19 Again there was division among the Jews.…
Mat 11:6 Blessed is the one who does not fall away on account of Me.”

Some of them wanted to seize Him,

Opposition to Jesus had intensified during the Feast of Tabernacles. Some in the crowd and among the religious authorities regarded His teaching and claims as a threat to their authority and traditions. Their hostility reflected the wider rejection of the Messiah by those unwilling to receive Him.

Jhn 10:39 At this, they tried again to seize Him, but…
Mat 21:46 Although they wanted to arrest Him, they were afraid…
Luk 20:19 When the scribes and chief priests realized…

but no one laid a hand on Him.

Though attempts to arrest Him were forming, no one could act outside God’s appointed timing. Jesus would not be taken until the hour set for His death, and His life remained under the Father’s sovereign purpose.

Jhn 8:20 He spoke these words while teaching in the temple courts…
Jhn 8:59 At this, they picked up stones to throw at Him.…
Luk 4:30 But Jesus passed through the crowd and went on His way.

The Unbelief of the Jewish Leaders

Then the officers returned to the chief priests and Pharisees,

The officers were temple guards sent to arrest Jesus. They answered to the chief priests, largely associated with the Sadducees, and the Pharisees, who joined them despite their differences because Jesus’ teaching threatened their authority. Their return without Him showed that they had not carried out the order.

1Sa 19:20-24 he sent messengers to seize him. But when they saw the group…
Act 5:22-24 But on arriving at the jail, the officers did not find them…
Jhn 18:3 So Judas brought a band of soldiers and officers…

who asked them, “Why didn’t you bring Him in?”

The leaders expected Jesus to be arrested and viewed His growing influence among the people as a danger. Their demand reveals the urgency of their opposition, while the guards’ failure to seize Him points to the authority Jesus displayed as He taught.

Jhn 10:39-40 At this, they tried again to seize Him, but…
Mrk 11:18 When the chief priests and scribes heard this,…
Mat 21:46 Although they wanted to arrest Him, they were afraid…

“Never has anyone spoken like this man!”

The temple officers sent to arrest Jesus returned empty-handed because His teaching had overcome their resolve. They recognized an authority and wisdom unlike that of the scribes and rabbis, who commonly appealed to earlier teachers. Jesus spoke directly and authoritatively, revealing the truth of God without relying on human approval.

Mat 7:28-29 When Jesus had finished saying these things,…
Luk 4:32 They were astonished at His teaching, because His message…
Jhn 12:49 I have not spoken on My own, but the Father who sent Me…

the officers answered.

These officers served under the chief priests and Pharisees in maintaining order around the temple. Though they had been sent to carry out the leaders’ command, they were deeply affected by Jesus’ words and could not bring themselves to seize Him. Their response exposed the contrast between the leaders’ hostility and the compelling power of Jesus’ ministry.

1Sa 19:20-24 he sent messengers to seize him. But when they saw the group…
Mat 27:54 When the centurion and those with him saw the earthquake…
Mrk 15:39 When the centurion standing there in front of Jesus…

“Have you also been deceived?”

The Pharisees dismissed belief in Jesus as deception rather than considering the testimony of His works and teaching. Their response reveals their contempt for the officers and their fear that Jesus’ growing influence would weaken their authority among the people. They regarded Him as a dangerous false teacher because He challenged their traditions and exposed their spiritual hypocrisy.

Mat 24:4 Jesus answered, “See to it that no one deceives you.
2Co 11:3 I am afraid, however, that just as Eve was deceived…
1Jn 3:7 Little children, let no one deceive you:…

replied the Pharisees.

As influential religious leaders, the Pharisees sought to preserve their control over Israel’s religious life. Their opposition to Jesus hardened as more people recognized Him as the Messiah, setting the stage for the increasing hostility that would lead to His arrest and crucifixion.

Jhn 9:40 Some of the Pharisees who were with Him heard this,…
Mat 12:24 But when the Pharisees heard this, they said,…
Luk 11:15 some of them said, “It is by Beelzebul, the prince…

“Have any of the rulers or Pharisees believed in Him?

The Pharisees appeal to the judgment of the religious establishment, implying that acceptance by the Sanhedrin or prominent Pharisees would validate Jesus’ claims. The rulers included leading members of the Jewish council, while the Pharisees were influential teachers known for strict devotion to the Law and inherited traditions. Their confidence in their own authority blinded them to the works and teaching that identified Jesus as the Messiah. Their claim was not entirely accurate. Nicodemus, a Pharisee and ruler, had already sought Jesus privately and now spoke in His defense before the council. Other leaders, including Joseph of Arimathea, would later be identified as disciples. Yet the prevailing opposition among the authorities intensified as Jesus’ ministry exposed their unbelief and threatened their influence. The contrast between the leaders’ rejection and the response of many ordinary people shows that recognition of Christ did not depend on rank, learning, or public approval.

The people gathered in Jerusalem for the Feast of Tabernacles included pilgrims, residents, and others listening to Jesus’ teaching. Their opinions of Him differed widely, from belief to confusion and opposition.

The Pharisees regarded the ordinary people as untrained in the detailed traditions and interpretations upheld by the religious leaders. Their words reveal contempt for those outside their circle of learning and influence.

They assumed that anyone who did not understand and observe the Law as they prescribed stood under God’s judgment. Their verdict ignored the faith of many in the crowd and exposed their confidence in religious status rather than in God’s work through Jesus.

Nicodemus,

Nicodemus, a Pharisee and member of the Sanhedrin whose Greek name means “victory of the people,” appears only in John’s Gospel. Though part of the leadership increasingly opposed to Jesus, he shows an openness to consider Jesus’ words and works.

Nicodemus was a member of the ruling council debating how to deal with Jesus. His position gave weight to his objection and revealed division among the leaders.

Nicodemus appealed to the Mosaic Law’s requirement for impartial justice. Rather than joining the leaders’ hostility toward Jesus, he insisted that their judgment follow the standards they claimed to uphold.

“Aren’t you also from Galilee?” they replied.

The Pharisees answered Nicodemus with contempt rather than addressing his call for a fair hearing. Galilee, a northern and largely rural region, was commonly regarded by Jerusalem’s religious elite as less cultured and less significant. Since Jesus had ministered throughout Galilee and many of His followers came from there, they treated His regional background as grounds for dismissal.

Mat 26:73 After a little while, those standing nearby came up…

“Look into it, and you will see that no prophet comes out of Galilee.”

Their claim was false, since Jonah came from a Galilean town. It also revealed their refusal to examine Jesus’ identity honestly. Though Jesus was known as a Galilean because He was raised in Nazareth, He was born in Bethlehem, and His ministry fulfilled God’s purpose for Galilee as well as the promised Messiah.
