Jeremiah 5

No One Is Just

“Go up and down the streets of Jerusalem.

Jerusalem, Judah’s capital and the location of the temple, stood at the center of the nation’s worship and government. The search through its streets portrays a thorough examination of the city’s spiritual and moral condition.

Ezk 9:4 “Go throughout the city of Jerusalem,” said the LORD,…
Pro 1:20 Wisdom calls out in the street, she lifts her voice…

Their words concealed dishonesty and unfaithfulness. By using the Lord’s name to support lies, they treated His holiness with contempt and revealed the corruption that would bring Judah under judgment.

Jer 7:9 Will you steal and murder, commit adultery and perjury,…

God sees the inward condition of Judah and requires faithfulness, honesty, and covenant obedience. Though religious forms remained, truth had largely disappeared from the nation.

Jer 17:10 I, the LORD, search the heart; I examine the mind…

Judah’s persistent refusal to return to the Lord revealed the depth of its corruption and foreshadowed the judgment that would come through Babylon.

Psa 9:8 He judges the world with justice; He governs the people…

I will go to the powerful and speak to them.

Jeremiah turns to Jerusalem’s priests, prophets, and officials, expecting them to understand God’s will and lead the nation in justice. Their position gave them responsibility to instruct the people and uphold the covenant.

Psa 119:46 I will speak of Your testimonies before kings,…
Act 26:2-3 “King Agrippa, I consider myself fortunate to stand…
Mat 10:18 On My account you will be brought before governors and kings…

Surely they know the way of the LORD, the justice of their God.”

God’s law required leaders to govern with righteousness, mercy, and faithful obedience. Jeremiah assumes they should recognize the moral demands of the covenant and correct the nation’s course.

Mic 3:1 Then I said: “Hear now, O leaders of Jacob,…
2Ch 19:6-7 Then he said to the judges, “Consider carefully what you do,…
Deu 17:18-20 When he is seated on his royal throne, he must write…

But they too, with one accord, had broken the yoke and torn off the chains.

This imagery of breaking the yoke and tearing off chains symbolizes rebellion and rejection of God's authority. The yoke often represents submission and service, as seen in Leviticus 26:13, where God speaks of breaking the yoke of slavery. Here, it indicates that the leaders, like the common people, have rejected God's covenant and guidance. This rebellion is a recurring theme in Jeremiah, where both leaders and people are indicted for their unfaithfulness (Jeremiah 2:20). The phrase underscores the pervasive nature of sin and rebellion, affecting all levels of society, and foreshadows the coming judgment due to their collective disobedience.

Jer 2:20 “For long ago you broke your yoke and tore off your chains,…
Psa 2:3 “Let us break Their chains and cast away Their cords.”
Isa 52:2 Shake off your dust! Rise up and sit on your throne…

Therefore a lion from the forest will strike them down,

In biblical symbolism, the lion often represents strength and ferocity. Here, it signifies impending judgment and destruction. The lion's habitat, the forest, suggests a natural and inevitable threat. Historically, lions were present in the Near East, making this imagery vivid for the original audience. The lion's attack symbolizes the Babylonian invasion, a divine instrument of judgment against Judah's sinfulness. This imagery echoes the warnings in Hosea 5:14, where God describes Himself as a lion to Ephraim and Judah.

Jer 49:19 Behold, one will come up like a lion…
Hos 5:14 For I am like a lion to Ephraim and like a young lion…
Psa 17:12 like a lion greedy for prey, like a young lion…

a wolf from the desert will ravage them.

Wolves are known for their cunning and relentless nature. The desert, a place of desolation, enhances the sense of danger and isolation. This phrase underscores the severity of the threat facing Judah. Wolves in the Bible often symbolize destruction and deceit (Ezekiel 22:27). The desert wolf's attack represents the relentless and consuming nature of the Babylonian forces, who would leave the land desolate.

Ezk 22:27 Her officials within her are like wolves tearing their prey…
Zep 3:3 Her princes are roaring lions; her judges are evening wolves…
Hab 1:8 Their horses are swifter than leopards, fiercer than wolves…

A leopard will lie in wait near their cities,

Leopards are known for their stealth and speed, making them effective predators. The imagery of a leopard lying in wait suggests an unavoidable and sudden attack. This reflects the strategic sieges laid by Babylonian armies around Judah's cities. The leopard's presence near cities indicates the proximity of danger and the inevitability of judgment. This imagery is consistent with the suddenness of divine judgment seen in other scriptures, such as Habakkuk 1:8.

Hos 13:7-8 So like a lion I will pounce on them…
Dan 7:6 Next, as I watched, suddenly another beast appeared…
Rev 13:2 The beast I saw was like a leopard, with the feet of a bear…

and everyone who ventures out will be torn to pieces.

This phrase highlights the totality and inescapability of the coming judgment. It emphasizes the personal impact on each individual who defies the warning. The tearing to pieces signifies complete destruction, leaving no room for escape or survival. This reflects the comprehensive nature of God's judgment on sin, as seen in other prophetic warnings like Isaiah 5:29.

Lev 26:22 I will send wild animals against you…
2Ki 2:24 Then he turned around, looked at them…
Ezk 14:21 For this is what the Lord GOD says: ‘How much worse……

For their rebellious acts are many,

The root cause of the impending judgment is the multitude of rebellious acts committed by the people. Rebellion against God is a recurring theme in the prophetic books, where Israel and Judah repeatedly turn away from God's commandments. This phrase underscores the justice of God's actions, as the people's persistent disobedience warrants divine retribution. The rebellion is reminiscent of the Israelites' behavior in the wilderness (Numbers 14:9).

Dan 9:5 we have sinned and done wrong. We have acted wickedly.…
Isa 1:2-4 Listen, O heavens, and give ear, O earth…
Neh 9:26 But they were disobedient and rebelled against You;…

and their unfaithful deeds are numerous.

The disaster was not arbitrary. Judah had repeatedly rejected the Lord’s covenant, embraced idolatry, and refused correction. Their continued rebellion brought the judgment Jeremiah had long warned was coming.

Jer 3:6-8 Now in the days of King Josiah, the LORD said to me,…
Ezk 16:59 For this is what the Lord GOD says: I will deal with you…
Mal 2:10-11 Do we not all have one Father? Did not one God create us?…

“Why should I forgive you?

God’s question exposes the justice of His judgment. Judah’s repeated rebellion was not a minor failure but a persistent rejection of the covenant, leaving them accountable for their sin.

2Ki 24:3-4 Surely this happened to Judah at the LORD’s command,…
2Ch 36:15-16 Again and again the LORD, the God of their fathers,…
Isa 1:15-17 When you spread out your hands in prayer…

Though Israel belonged to God by covenant, the people had deliberately abandoned Him. Their conduct showed disloyalty to the Lord who had redeemed and sustained them.

Zep 1:5 those who bow on the rooftops to worship the host of heaven…

I satisfied their needs,

God had provided abundantly for His people, supplying the blessings necessary for life and security. Their rebellion therefore reflected not ignorance or need, but ingratitude toward His faithful care.

Psa 81:10-11 I am the LORD your God, who brought you up out of Egypt.…
Neh 9:20-21 You gave Your good Spirit to instruct them.…
Deu 8:10-14 When you eat and are satisfied, bless the LORD your God…

yet they committed adultery

The people were guilty of literal sexual sin and spiritual unfaithfulness. Their pursuit of other gods broke the covenant relationship portrayed as a marriage between the Lord and His people.

Exo 34:15-16 Do not make a covenant with the inhabitants of the land,…
Ezk 16:32 You adulterous wife! You receive strangers…
Hos 3:1 Then the LORD said to me, “Go show love to your wife again,…

and assembled at the houses of prostitutes.

Judah adopted immoral practices associated with pagan worship and openly pursued sexual corruption. Their idolatry and immorality had become public, organized patterns of rebellion against God.

Hos 4:14 I will not punish your daughters when they prostitute…
Pro 7:6-27 For at the window of my house I looked through the lattice.…
Pro 23:27-28 For a prostitute is a deep pit, and an adulteress…

They are well-fed, lusty stallions,

Judah’s prosperity had become an occasion for self-indulgence rather than gratitude and obedience. Like breeding stallions driven by appetite, the people displayed strength and abundance without moral restraint.

Job 39:19-25 Do you give strength to the horse or adorn his neck…
Ezk 23:20 and lusted after their lovers, whose genitals…
Jer 8:16 The snorting of enemy horses is heard from Dan…

each neighing after his neighbor’s wife.

Sexual sin had become widespread, violating God’s covenant and destroying the faithfulness expected within families and the community. Their unchecked lust reflected a deeper rejection of the Lord’s authority.

Exo 20:17 You shall not covet your neighbor’s house.…
Deu 5:21 You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife……
Pro 6:29 So is he who sleeps with another man’s wife;…

Should I not punish them for these things?” declares the LORD.

Judah’s idolatry, dishonesty, oppression, and sexual unfaithfulness had become widespread. The nation had broken the covenant it claimed to uphold, and its persistent rebellion required judgment. The LORD’s declaration confirms that the coming punishment was neither arbitrary nor excessive, but the righteous response to deliberate sin.

Jer 9:9 Should I not punish them for these things?…
Amo 3:2 Only you have I known from all the families of the earth;…
Jer 30:11 For I am with you to save you, declares the LORD.…

“Should I not avenge Myself on such a nation as this?

Judah’s offenses were directed not only against its people but against the LORD Himself. The corruption of the nation had dishonored His name and rejected His rule. God would act to uphold His justice against a people whose collective rebellion had reached the point of judgment.

Isa 1:24 Therefore the Lord GOD of Hosts, the Mighty One of Israel,…
Deu 32:35 Vengeance is Mine; I will repay. In due time…
Nam 1:2 The LORD is a jealous and avenging God; the LORD is avenging…

Go up through her vineyards and ravage them,

Judah is pictured as a vineyard laid open to invading forces. God would use foreign armies, ultimately Babylon, to devastate the land because His people had persisted in idolatry, injustice, and rebellion.

Jer 12:10 Many shepherds have destroyed My vineyard;…
Isa 5:5-6 Now I will tell you what I am about to do to My vineyard:…
Jol 1:7 It has laid waste My grapevine and splintered My fig tree.…

but do not finish them off.

The destruction would be severe, but God would preserve a remnant. Judah’s exile would not cancel His covenant purposes or His promised restoration.

Jer 4:27 For this is what the LORD says: “The whole land…
Jer 30:11 For I am with you to save you, declares the LORD.…
Amo 9:8 Surely the eyes of the Lord GOD are on the sinful kingdom……

Strip off her branches,

The invaders were to remove what had become fruitless and corrupt within the nation. Judgment would reach the people, leaders, cities, and resources that had been corrupted by unfaithfulness.

Isa 18:5-6 For before the harvest, when the blossom is gone…
Ezk 15:2-4 Son of man, how does the wood of the vine…
Jhn 15:2 He cuts off every branch in Me that bears no fruit,…

for they do not belong to the LORD.

Though they bore the name of God’s people, their conduct showed that they had rejected Him. Covenant privilege without faith and obedience could not shield them from judgment.

Jer 2:21 I had planted you like a choice vine from the very best seed…
Psa 80:8-15 You uprooted a vine from Egypt; You drove out the nations…
Isa 27:2-3 In that day: “Sing about a fruitful vineyard.…

For the house of Israel and the house of Judah

The northern kingdom of Israel and the southern kingdom of Judah had both broken faith with the Lord. Though divided after Solomon’s reign, they remained the covenant people descended from the united kingdom established under David. Israel had long embraced idolatry and was carried into exile by Assyria; Judah followed the same path despite witnessing Israel’s judgment.

Jer 11:10 They have returned to the sins of their forefathers…
Jer 31:31 Behold, the days are coming, declares the LORD,…
Jer 3:18 In those days the house of Judah will walk with…

have been utterly unfaithful to Me,”

Their rebellion was deliberate and widespread, seen in idolatry, injustice, false worship, and disregard for God’s covenant commands. The nation’s corruption was not limited to a few leaders or isolated failures but had spread throughout both kingdoms.

Jer 3:20 But as a woman may betray her husband, so you have betrayed…
Hos 5:7 They have been unfaithful to the LORD;…
2Ch 36:14 Furthermore, all the leaders of the priests and the people…

declares the LORD.

Jeremiah delivered God’s own verdict. The coming judgment was certain because the Lord had spoken, and His covenant people had persistently rejected His authority.

Jer 1:8 Do not be afraid of them, for I am with you…
Jer 3:12 Go, proclaim this message toward the north:…
Jer 3:14 “Return, O faithless children,” declares the LORD, …

They have lied about the LORD

Judah denied God’s holiness, justice, and faithfulness to His covenant. Rather than receiving Jeremiah’s warnings, many accepted the assurances of false prophets who promised peace while the nation continued in idolatry and injustice.

Isa 59:13 rebelling and denying the LORD, turning away from our God,…
Hos 7:13 Woe to them, for they have strayed from Me!…
Ezk 22:28 Her prophets whitewash these deeds by false visions…

and said: “He will not do anything;

The people treated the LORD as indifferent to their rebellion, convinced that He would neither judge nor intervene. Their confidence rested on presumption, not repentance.

Zep 1:12 And at that time I will search Jerusalem with lamps…
Ezk 8:12 “Son of man,” He said to me, “do you see what the elders…
Psa 94:7 They say, “The LORD does not see; the God of Jacob…

harm will not come to us;

Jerusalem’s inhabitants believed their identity as God’s people and the presence of the temple guaranteed their security. They ignored the covenant warnings that disobedience would bring judgment.

Mic 3:11 Her leaders judge for a bribe, her priests teach…
Amo 9:10 All the sinners among My people will die by the sword…
Isa 28:15 “We have made a covenant with death; we have…”…

we will not see sword or famine.

The sword of Babylon and the famine produced by siege were approaching realities. By rejecting God’s warning through Jeremiah, the people refused to acknowledge the consequences of their sin.

Jer 14:13 “Ah, Lord GOD!” I replied, “Look, the prophets…”…
Ezk 13:10 Because they have led My people astray, saying, ‘Peace,’…
Ezk 13:16 those prophets of Israel who prophesied…

The prophets are but wind,

Jeremiah exposes the false prophets of Judah as empty and unreliable. While Babylon’s threat drew near, they assured the people that peace would continue and that no judgment would come.

Mic 2:11 If a man of wind were to come and say falsely,…
Job 16:3 Is there no end to your long-winded speeches?…
Hos 8:7 For they sow the wind, and they shall reap the whirlwind.…

for the word is not in them.

They spoke from their own desires rather than from the Lord. Unlike Jeremiah, who had received God’s message of coming judgment, these men had no divine authority and led the nation into false confidence.

Jer 23:16 This is what the LORD of Hosts says: “Do not listen…
Ezk 13:2-3 Son of man, prophesy against the prophets of Israel…
Deu 18:20-22 But if any prophet dares to speak a message in My name…

So let their own predictions befall them.”

Their promises of safety would prove false, and the judgment they denied would overtake them as well. Their downfall would reveal that the Lord had not sent them.

Jer 28:15-17 Then the prophet Jeremiah said to the prophet Hananiah,…
Ezk 14:9-10 But if the prophet is enticed to speak a message,…
Zec 13:3-4 And if anyone still prophesies, his father and mother…

Judgment Proclaimed

Therefore this is what the LORD God of Hosts says:

God speaks with the full authority of the sovereign ruler over all earthly and heavenly powers. His judgment against Judah is neither uncertain nor beyond His ability to carry out.

Isa 1:24 Therefore the Lord GOD of Hosts, the Mighty One of Israel,…
Mal 1:14 But cursed is the deceiver who has an acceptable male…

“Because you have spoken this word,

Jeremiah had faithfully proclaimed the warning God gave him, despite opposition from the people and their leaders. His message exposed Judah’s rebellion, idolatry, and refusal to heed repeated calls to return to the Lord.

Num 14:28 So tell them: As surely as I live, declares the LORD,…
Mat 12:36-37 But I tell you that men will give an account…

I will make My words a fire in your mouth

God’s words through Jeremiah would not prove empty or harmless. They would bring judgment upon those who rejected them, revealing the destructive consequences of Judah’s sin.

Jer 23:29 “Is not My word like fire,” declares the LORD,…
Rev 11:5 If anyone wants to harm them fire proceeds from their mouths…

and this people the wood it consumes.

Judah’s people, hardened in disobedience, would become like dry wood before a fire. The coming judgment would be severe and consuming because they had persistently rejected God’s word.

Isa 9:19 By the wrath of the LORD of Hosts the land is scorched…
Ezk 15:4-5 No, it is cast into the fire for fuel. The fire…

Behold, I am bringing a distant nation against you, O house of Israel,” declares the LORD.

The LORD announces judgment upon the whole nation for persistent rebellion. Babylon, rising from Mesopotamia east of Israel, would become the instrument of this judgment. Its distance underscored both the unexpected reach of the coming invasion and the seriousness of Israel’s covenant unfaithfulness.

Deu 28:49 The LORD will bring a nation from afar…
Jer 6:22 This is what the LORD says: “Behold, an army…
Isa 5:26 He lifts a banner for the distant nations…

“It is an established nation, an ancient nation,

Babylon possessed a long history of political strength and military power. Its civilization reached back many centuries, and by Jeremiah’s day it was becoming the dominant empire of the region. Israel would face an experienced and formidable enemy rather than a temporary local threat.

Isa 46:9-10 Remember what happened long ago, for I am God,…
Deu 32:7 Remember the days of old; consider the years long past…

a nation whose language you do not know and whose speech you do not understand.

The invading army would come from a people wholly unfamiliar to Judah in language and culture. Communication would be difficult, and exile among such a people would deepen the humiliation and isolation of those carried from their land.

Ezk 3:5-6 For you are not being sent to a people of unfamiliar speech…
Isa 33:19 You will no longer see the insolent, a people whose speech…
Isa 28:11 Indeed, with mocking lips and foreign tongues,…

Their quivers are like open graves;

Babylon’s arrows would bring widespread death to Judah. Their weapons are pictured as graves standing open, ready to receive the slain, emphasizing the certainty and scale of the destruction coming through their invasion.

Psa 5:9 For not a word they speak can be trusted;…
Rom 3:13 Their throats are open graves; their tongues practice deceit…

they are all mighty men.

The Babylonian forces were seasoned, powerful warriors, equipped and disciplined for conquest. Judah would not overcome them by its own strength, for God was using this formidable army to carry out His judgment.

Jol 2:7 They charge like mighty men; they scale the walls…
Nam 2:3 The shields of his mighty men are red; the valiant warriors…
Jer 46:9 Advance, O horses! Race furiously, O chariots!…

They will devour your harvest and food;

Invading armies would seize grain and stored provisions, leaving the land unable to sustain its people. Judah’s agricultural wealth, ordinarily a sign of God’s provision, would be stripped away in judgment.

Deu 28:33 A people you do not know will eat the produce of your land…
Lev 26:16 then this is what I will do to you: I will bring upon you…
Deu 28:51 They will eat the offspring of your livestock…

they will consume your sons and daughters;

The enemy would carry off or destroy the next generation, bringing grief to families and threatening the nation’s future through death and exile.

Deu 28:53 Then you will eat the fruit of your womb,…
Lev 26:29 You will eat the flesh of your own sons and daughters.
2Ki 6:28-29 Then the king asked her, “What is the matter?”…

they will eat up your flocks and herds;

Livestock would be taken for food and military supply, bringing severe economic loss and disrupting the sacrifices and daily life of the people.

Deu 28:31 Your ox will be slaughtered before your eyes,…
Jdg 6:4 encamping against them as far as Gaza and destroying…
Job 1:14-17 While the oxen were plowing and the donkeys were grazing…

they will feed on your vines and fig trees.

Orchards and vineyards, marks of settled prosperity and security, would be ravaged. The destruction would leave the countryside barren and expose the consequences of Judah’s unfaithfulness.

Hos 2:12 I will destroy her vines and fig trees…
Jol 1:7 It has laid waste My grapevine and splintered My fig tree.…
Jol 1:12 The grapevine is dried up, and the fig tree is withered;…

With the sword they will destroy the fortified cities in which you trust.”

Judah’s defenses would not withstand the Babylonian advance. The cities in which the people placed their confidence would fall, showing that walls and weapons could not protect a nation under God’s judgment.

Deu 28:52 They will besiege all the cities throughout your land,…
2Ki 18:13 In the fourteenth year of Hezekiah’s reign…
2Ch 32:1 After all these acts of faithfulness, Sennacherib…

“Yet even in those days,”

“Yet even in those days” assures Judah that, despite invasion, devastation, and exile for persistent rebellion, God’s judgment would not erase His purposes for His people.

Isa 55:11 So My word that proceeds from My mouth will not return to Me…
Num 23:19 God is not a man, that He should lie, or a son of man,…

“I will not make a full end of you.

Jerusalem would fall and many would be carried to Babylon, but God would preserve a remnant and maintain His covenant promises.

Jer 30:11 For I am with you to save you, declares the LORD.…
Jer 46:28 And you, My servant Jacob, do not be afraid…
Lev 26:44-45 Yet in spite of this, when they are in the land…

And when the people ask, ‘For what offense has the LORD our God done all these things to us?’

Judah would be bewildered by the calamities brought upon the nation, failing to connect its suffering with persistent rebellion against the LORD. The question exposes a hardened people who had ignored repeated warnings and would not acknowledge their covenant unfaithfulness.

Jer 16:10 When you tell these people all these things,…
2Ch 7:21-22 And when this temple has become a heap of rubble,…
Deu 29:24-25 So all the nations will ask, ‘Why has the LORD……

You are to tell them, ‘Just as you have forsaken Me and served foreign gods in your land,

The nation had abandoned the LORD’s exclusive worship and adopted the idols of surrounding peoples. Their idolatry violated the covenant and revealed spiritual treachery toward the God who had given them the land.

Jdg 10:13 But you have forsaken Me and served other gods,…
Deu 31:16 And the LORD said to Moses, “You will soon rest…
Deu 32:16-17 They provoked His jealousy with foreign gods;…

so will you serve foreigners in a land that is not your own.’”

Their punishment would fit their sin: having served foreign gods in the land God gave them, they would serve foreign rulers in exile. This was fulfilled when Babylon conquered Judah, destroyed Jerusalem, and carried many of its people away from their homeland.

Jer 15:14 Then I will enslave you to your enemies…
Jer 16:13 So I will cast you out of this land into a land…

Declare this in the house of Jacob

God commands Jeremiah to announce His charge to the whole covenant people. “The house of Jacob” recalls their descent from Jacob, whom God renamed Israel, and identifies the nation as a united people bound to the Lord by covenant despite its persistent rebellion.

Mic 3:8 As for me, however, I am filled with power by the Spirit…
Isa 58:1 Cry aloud, do not hold back! Raise your voice…
Ezk 2:7 But speak My words to them, whether they listen…

and proclaim it in Judah:

Judah, the southern kingdom containing Jerusalem and the temple, stood as the remaining center of David’s royal line and public worship. Its greater stability than the northern kingdom did not remove its guilt. The proclamation exposed Judah’s idolatry, injustice, and refusal to obey God, calling the nation to face its covenant unfaithfulness.

Jer 11:6 Then the LORD said to me, “Proclaim all these words…
Jer 7:2 “Stand in the gate of the house of the LORD and proclaim…
2Ch 36:15 Again and again the LORD, the God of their fathers,…

“Hear this, O foolish and senseless people,

Jeremiah addresses Judah in its stubborn rebellion against God. Though the nation possessed the law, the temple, and the testimony of the prophets, it had turned to idolatry, injustice, and covenant unfaithfulness.

Deu 32:6 Is this how you repay the LORD, O foolish and senseless…
Jer 4:22 For My people are fools; they have not known Me.…
Psa 94:8 Take notice, O senseless among the people!…

who have eyes but do not see,

The people witnessed God’s past deliverance and His warnings through coming judgment, yet refused to recognize their guilt or the danger before them. Their blindness was moral and spiritual, rooted in persistent rebellion.

Ezk 12:2 “Son of man, you are living in a rebellious house…
Mrk 8:18 Having eyes, do you not see? And having ears do you not hear…
Isa 6:9-10 And He replied: “Go and tell this people, ‘Be ever hearing,…

who have ears but do not hear.

Judah heard God’s word proclaimed by Jeremiah and other prophets but would not receive it with obedience. Their refusal to listen left them accountable for the judgment God was about to bring.

Psa 115:6 they have ears, but cannot hear; they have noses;…
Jer 6:10 To whom can I give this warning? Who will listen to me?…
Deu 29:4 Yet to this day the LORD has not given you…

Do you not fear Me?” declares the LORD.

Judah’s refusal to honor the LORD revealed rebellion against the God who had delivered and sustained them. Surrounded by nations devoted to false gods, Israel was called to recognize the LORD alone as Creator and Judge.

Deu 28:58 If you are not careful to observe all the words of this law…
Psa 33:8 Let all the earth fear the LORD; let all the people…

“Do you not tremble before Me,

Reverence before God acknowledges His holiness, authority, and power. Their lack of trembling showed a hardened heart rather than ignorance of His works.

God established the limits of the sea at creation and continues to govern it. What appears unstable and destructive remains under His command.

Job 26:10 He has inscribed a horizon on the face of the waters…

The waves surge, but they cannot prevail.

The force of the waves illustrates the strength of creation, yet even its violence is restrained by God’s sovereign will.

Psa 89:9 You rule the raging sea; when its waves mount up,…
Psa 107:29 He calmed the storm to a whisper, and the waves of the sea…

They roar but cannot cross it.

Judah should have recognized that the Lord who controls the sea also holds nations, rulers, and every threat under His authority.

Nam 1:4 He rebukes the sea and dries it up; He makes all the rivers…
Isa 51:15 For I am the LORD your God who stirs up the sea…

But these people have stubborn and rebellious hearts.

Judah had persistently resisted the Lord despite His repeated warnings through Jeremiah. Their rebellion came from within, shaping their choices, worship, and public life. Political uncertainty and the threat of foreign powers did not turn them back to God; instead, many continued in idolatry and injustice.

Jer 7:24 Yet they did not listen or incline their ear…
Jer 18:12 But they will reply, ‘It is hopeless…
Deu 31:27 For I know how rebellious and stiff-necked you are.…

They have turned aside and gone away.

The people deliberately abandoned the path God had commanded and separated themselves from His covenant. Their departure would lead to the judgment Jeremiah announced through Babylon, yet God’s purpose in judging them included preserving a remnant and bringing restoration in His time.

Deu 9:12 And the LORD said to me, “Get up and go down from here…
Jer 8:5 Why then have these people turned away?…
Jer 2:27 say to a tree, ‘You are my father,’ and to a stone…

They have not said in their hearts,

Judah’s rebellion was rooted within. Though the people continued outward religious practices, they did not truly acknowledge God’s authority or depend on Him with gratitude.

Psa 14:1 The fool says in his heart, “There is no God.”…
Psa 10:4 In his pride the wicked man does not seek Him;…
Deu 8:17 You might say in your heart, “The power and strength”…

‘Let us fear the LORD our God,

God had established the harvest seasons that supplied the people’s food and sustained the land. Their failure to recognize His hand in these regular blessings revealed their ingratitude and refusal to honor Him.

Exo 34:22 And you are to celebrate the Feast of Weeks…
Gen 8:22 As long as the earth endures, seedtime and harvest…

Your iniquities have diverted these from you;

Judah’s idolatry, injustice, and refusal to fear the Lord had withheld the rains and harvests He had appointed for their good. Their rebellion disrupted the covenant blessings that sustained the land.

Isa 59:2 But your iniquities have built barriers…
Hag 1:10-11 Therefore, on account of you the heavens have withheld…
Deu 11:16-17 But be careful that you are not enticed to turn aside…

Their repeated disobedience brought the loss of agricultural abundance, security, and provision. The deprivation was God’s righteous judgment against a people who had rejected His ways.

Isa 1:19-20 If you are willing and obedient, you will eat…
Psa 84:11 For the LORD God is a sun and a shield;…

For among My people are wicked men;

Judah’s covenant identity within Israel, God’s chosen people, did not shield it from corruption. Within the nation, men who belonged outwardly to God’s people practiced injustice, deceit, and oppression, contributing to the moral collapse that brought divine judgment.

Jer 6:13 “For from the least of them to the greatest,…
Hos 4:1 Hear the word of the LORD, O children of Israel,…
Mic 7:2 The godly man has perished from the earth…

they watch like fowlers lying in wait;

they set a trap to catch men.

Their schemes were aimed at people, especially those unable to defend themselves. Rather than upholding justice, they used deception and power to enrich themselves while denying protection and fairness to the poor, the fatherless, and the needy.

Hab 1:15 The foe pulls all of them up with a hook;…
Psa 10:9 He lies in wait like a lion in a thicket;…
Pro 1:11-12 If they say, “Come along, let us lie in wait for blood…”…

Like cages full of birds,

Judah’s people had filled their lives with victims of deception, as birds were trapped and confined for human gain. Their prosperity rested on exploiting others rather than obeying the Lord.

Ecc 9:12 For surely no man knows his time: Like fish caught…
Ezk 13:20 Therefore this is what the Lord GOD says:…

Hos 12:7-8 A merchant loves to defraud with dishonest scales…
Hab 2:9 Woe to him who builds his house by unjust gain,…

Therefore they have become powerful and rich.

Their influence and wealth were gained through dishonest practices, not through God’s blessing. Though they appeared secure, their success stood under God’s coming judgment.

Psa 73:12 Behold, these are the wicked—always carefree…
Pro 18:11 A rich man’s wealth is his fortified city;…

nor have they defended the rights of the needy.

The poor were denied fair judgment and legal protection. Such injustice revealed a society that had abandoned God’s commands and stood under His coming judgment.

Psa 72:4 May he vindicate the afflicted among the people……
Isa 10:1-2 Woe to those who enact unjust statutes…

Should I not punish them for these things?” declares the LORD.

Judah’s idolatry, sexual immorality, dishonesty, and oppression of the vulnerable had become settled patterns rather than isolated failures. The covenant God had made with Israel included real consequences for persistent rebellion. His judgment was not arbitrary but flowed from His holiness and justice. The coming Babylonian invasion would demonstrate that the LORD’s warnings were certain and that Judah could not presume upon His patience.

Jer 9:9 Should I not punish them for these things?…
Hos 4:9 And it shall be like people, like priest.…
Amo 3:2 Only you have I known from all the families of the earth;…

“Should I not avenge Myself on such a nation as this?

Judah had rejected the God who had redeemed, protected, and repeatedly called her back to faithfulness. As the righteous Judge, the LORD would hold the nation accountable for its violence, corruption, and unfaithfulness. Babylon’s rise was part of His appointed judgment, though Babylon itself would later answer for its own sins. God’s vengeance expresses His defense of righteousness and His refusal to leave evil unpunished.

Isa 1:24 Therefore the Lord GOD of Hosts, the Mighty One of Israel,…
Nam 1:2 The LORD is a jealous and avenging God; the LORD is avenging…
Deu 32:35 Vengeance is Mine; I will repay. In due time…

A horrible and shocking thing

Judah’s spiritual condition had become utterly corrupt. Idolatry, false worship, and injustice filled the nation that God had set apart for Himself. Their rebellion was grievous because it took place among a people who knew God’s law and had received His covenant promises.

Jer 23:14 And among the prophets of Jerusalem I have seen…
Hos 6:10 In the house of Israel I have seen a horrible thing:…
Jer 18:13 Therefore this is what the LORD says: “Inquire…

has happened

The evil was already present, not merely threatened in the future. Jeremiah exposed the nation’s actual condition as it stood before God, leaving Judah without excuse for its sin.

Deu 4:32 Indeed, ask now from one end of the heavens to the other…
Jdg 19:30 And everyone who saw it said, “Nothing like this…
Jer 2:10 Cross over to the coasts of Cyprus and take a look;…

in the land.

Judah’s land, given by God as an inheritance, had been defiled by the people’s unfaithfulness. Their corruption would bring the judgment later described in the chapter, including the loss of the land through invasion and exile.

Lev 18:25-27 Even the land has become defiled, so I am punishing it…
Jer 3:1-2 If a man divorces his wife and she leaves him…
Ezk 36:17-18 Son of man, when the people of Israel lived in their land,…

The prophets prophesy falsely,

False prophets in Judah claimed divine authority while denying the judgment God had announced through Jeremiah. They promised peace and security to a people living in rebellion, making their message more acceptable than the call to repent.

Jer 14:14 “The prophets are prophesying lies in My name,”…
Ezk 13:6 They see false visions and speak lying divinations.…
Mic 3:5 This is what the LORD says: “As for the prophets,…

and the priests rule by their own authority.

The priests abandoned faithful service to God’s Law and exercised power according to their own desires. Those appointed to teach and lead the nation instead helped sustain its spiritual corruption.

Zep 3:4 Her prophets are reckless, faithless men.…
Mal 2:8-9 But you have departed from the way, and your instruction…
Ezk 22:26 Her priests do violence to My law and profane My holy things…

My people love it so,

Judah willingly embraced leaders who confirmed its sinful course. The people preferred reassuring lies to God’s truth and shared responsibility for the nation’s rebellion.

Mic 2:11 If a man of wind were to come and say falsely,…
Isa 30:10-11 They say to the seers, “Stop seeing visions!”…
2Ti 4:3-4 For the time will come when men will not tolerate…

but what will you do in the end?

When judgment came, false prophets and corrupt priests could not deliver the people. The question exposes the emptiness of their confidence and presses Judah to reckon with the consequences of rejecting God.

Deu 32:29 If only they were wise, they would understand it…
Isa 10:3 What will you do on the day of reckoning…
Ezk 7:2-4 “O son of man, this is what the Lord GOD says…
