2 Chronicles 6

Solomon Blesses the LORD

Then Solomon declared:

At the dedication of the Temple, Solomon publicly recognized the completion of the house David had desired to build for the LORD. The gathering marked a defining moment for Israel, as the kingdom worshiped before the God who had established David’s line and chosen Jerusalem.

“The LORD has said

Solomon affirmed that the Temple and its dedication rested on God’s own purpose, not merely royal ambition. Israel’s worship was governed by the LORD’s revealed will and covenant promises.

2Sa 7:6 For I have not dwelt in a house from the day…

I have not chosen a city from any tribe of Israel

Israel had long lacked an enduring royal house. God’s choice of David established the line of kings through whom Jerusalem would be governed and the temple would be built.

2Sa 7:8 Now then, you are to tell My servant David…
1Sa 13:14 But now your kingdom will not endure; the LORD has sought…

But now I have chosen Jerusalem for My Name to be there,

God appointed Jerusalem as Israel’s central place of worship and the location of the temple built by Solomon. The city had become David’s capital and the spiritual center of the united kingdom. There the Lord placed His Name, marking Jerusalem as the earthly seat of His covenant presence among His people. Its selection fulfilled God’s purpose to establish one recognized sanctuary for Israel’s worship and later pointed forward to the promised New Jerusalem.

God also chose David and established his house as Israel’s royal line. Though David was the youngest son of Jesse and was not chosen by outward appearance, the Lord made him king and united the tribes under his rule. God’s covenant with David promised an enduring dynasty, ultimately fulfilled in Jesus Christ, David’s greater Son and the eternal King.

Now it was in the heart of my father David

David, Israel’s second king, desired to establish a permanent center of worship in Jerusalem after the Ark had been brought there. His plan arose from devotion to the LORD and from his concern that Israel’s worship reflect God’s kingship over the nation.

1Ch 28:2 It was in my heart to build a house as a resting place…
1Ch 17:1-2 After David had settled into his palace, he said to Nathan…

to build a house for the Name of the LORD,

The house was the temple, intended to replace the tabernacle as the appointed place for Israel’s sacrifices, prayers, and national worship. It would honor the LORD’s revealed name and testify to His presence among His people.

1Ki 5:5 So behold, I plan to build a house for the Name of the LORD…
2Sa 7:13 He will build a house for My Name, and I will…
Deu 12:5 Instead, you must seek the place the LORD your God…

the God of Israel.

The LORD alone had redeemed Israel, given them the land, and bound Himself to them by covenant. The temple would stand in Jerusalem as the center of worship for the nation whose God was not one among many, but the living God who had chosen Israel.

1Ki 8:15 Blessed be the LORD, the God of Israel, who has fulfilled……
2Sa 7:27 For You, O LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel,…
1Ch 29:10 Then David blessed the LORD in the sight of all…

But the LORD said to my father David,

Solomon recalls God’s word to David and presents the temple as the continuation of God’s purpose for Israel. David had established Jerusalem as the royal city and prepared for a permanent sanctuary there, but the work would pass to his son.

1Ki 8:18 But the LORD said to my father David, …
2Sa 7:5 Go and tell My servant David that this is what the LORD says:…
1Ch 17:4 Go and tell My servant David that this is what the LORD says…

‘Since it was in your heart to build a house for My Name,

David desired to replace the tabernacle with a permanent temple where Israel would gather for worship and sacrifice. The temple would bear God’s Name as the appointed center of His worship, though God Himself is not confined to a building.

1Ch 22:7-10 “My son,” said David to Solomon, “it was in my heart”…
1Ch 28:2-3 It was in my heart to build a house as a resting place…
1Ki 5:5 So behold, I plan to build a house for the Name of the LORD…

you have done well to have this in your heart.

God approved David’s desire even though David would not build the temple. David prepared materials and plans, while Solomon carried out the construction according to God’s command.

1Ch 17:2 And Nathan replied to David, “Do all that is in your heart,…
2Sa 7:3 And Nathan replied to the king, “Go and do”…
1Ch 29:17 I know, my God, that You test the heart…

Nevertheless, you are not the one to build it;

David desired to build a temple for the Lord, but God appointed another for the task. His years as a warrior king, marked by warfare and bloodshed, did not suit the building of the sanctuary that would represent peace and God’s settled presence among Israel.

1Ch 22:8 You are not to build a house for My Name…
1Ch 28:3 But God said to me, ‘You are not to build a house…
1Ki 5:3 As you are well aware, due to the wars waged…

but your son, your own offspring,

Solomon, David’s son and heir, would carry out this work. God’s choice preserved the promise that David’s royal line would continue to serve a central role in Israel’s history.

1Ch 17:11 And when your days are fulfilled and you go…

Solomon would build the temple in Jerusalem as the appointed center of Israel’s worship. The house belonged to God and bore His Name, signifying His covenant presence among His people.

Solomon placed the Ark of the Covenant in the Most Holy Place of the temple he had built in Jerusalem. The Ark, formerly kept in the tabernacle, represented the Lord’s dwelling among His people. Its arrival in the temple marked the establishment of a permanent center of worship for Israel and the completion of the work David had desired to accomplish.

Solomon’s Prayer of Dedication

Then Solomon stood before the altar of the LORD

Solomon stood in his role as Israel’s king before the altar in the Temple he had built in Jerusalem. The altar marked the place appointed for sacrifice and atonement, while the Temple housed the Ark of the Covenant as the visible center of Israel’s worship. Before God and the nation, Solomon acted as an intercessor, leading the people in prayer at the dedication of the Temple.

1Ki 8:22 Then Solomon stood before the altar of the LORD,…
2Ch 1:6 Solomon offered sacrifices there before the LORD…
1Ki 3:4 Now the king went to Gibeon to sacrifice there…

in front of the whole assembly of Israel

Leaders and representatives from across Israel had gathered for this national event. Their presence showed the unity of the tribes under the Davidic kingdom and their shared covenant relationship with the LORD. Solomon’s public prayer acknowledged that the Temple and the kingdom existed by God’s promise and power, not by human achievement.

1Ki 8:14 And as the whole assembly of Israel stood there,…
Jos 8:35 There was not a word of all that Moses had commanded…
Deu 31:11-12 when all Israel comes before the LORD your God…

and spread out his hands.

With his hands lifted toward heaven, Solomon assumed the customary posture of earnest prayer and dependence on God. He sought the LORD’s continued presence, mercy, and faithfulness toward Israel. His prayer anticipated the need for forgiveness when the people sinned and called upon God to hear them when they turned toward the Temple in repentance.

1Ki 8:54 Now when Solomon had finished praying this entire prayer…
Isa 1:15 When you spread out your hands in prayer…
Psa 143:6 I stretch out my hands to You; my soul thirsts for You…

Now Solomon had made a bronze platform

The raised bronze platform marked the importance of the temple dedication and provided a suitable place from which the king could lead the nation in prayer. Bronze was widely used in the temple furnishings, especially where strength and durability were required.

Neh 8:4 Ezra the scribe stood on a high wooden platform…
2Ch 4:1 He made a bronze altar twenty cubits long,…

five cubits long, five cubits wide, and three cubits high

Measuring about seven and a half feet square and four and a half feet high, the platform elevated Solomon above the gathered people without removing him from their midst.

2Ch 7:7 Then Solomon consecrated the middle of the courtyard…

He stood on it,

2Ki 23:25 Neither before nor after Josiah was there any king…
Jer 29:13 You will seek Me and find Me when you search for Me…

You have kept Your promise to Your servant, my father David.

Solomon acknowledges that God has remained faithful to the covenant made with David, including the assurance that David’s son would succeed him and build the temple. The completed sanctuary stood as visible evidence that God had established David’s dynasty according to His word.

1Ki 8:24 You have kept Your promise to Your servant, my father David.…
2Sa 7:28 And now, O Lord GOD, You are God! Your words are true,…
Psa 132:11 The LORD swore an oath to David, a promise…

What You spoke with Your mouth

God had personally declared His purpose concerning David and his house. His promises were certain because they came from the Lord, whose word governs history and does not fail.

Num 23:19 God is not a man, that He should lie, or a son of man,…
Jer 1:12 “You have observed correctly,” said the LORD,…
Isa 55:11 So My word that proceeds from My mouth will not return to Me…

You have fulfilled with Your hand this day.

God had actively brought His promise to completion by establishing Solomon as king and enabling him to finish the temple in Jerusalem. The dedication of the temple marked a decisive moment in Israel’s worship and confirmed God’s continuing commitment to the house of David.

1Ki 9:5 then I will establish your royal throne over Israel forever,…
Jer 33:17 For this is what the LORD says: David will never lack a man…

The promise required David’s heirs to govern in submission to God’s commands. Their disobedience brought judgment upon the kingdom and eventually contributed to the exile.

Deu 17:18-20 When he is seated on his royal throne, he must write…
1Ki 2:3 And keep the charge of the LORD your God to walk in His ways…

as you have walked before Me.’

David’s life, though marked by serious sin, was characterized by repentance and loyalty to the LORD. Solomon’s prayer recognizes that Israel’s kings were accountable to follow that same devotion.

1Ki 9:4 And as for you, if you walk before Me…
1Ki 15:5 For David had done what was right in the eyes of the LORD…

And now, O LORD, God of Israel,

Solomon appeals to the covenant God who chose Israel and had faithfully preserved the nation through its history. He addresses the Lord as Israel’s God because the temple dedication rests on God’s covenant faithfulness.

1Ch 17:16 Then King David went in, sat before the LORD…
2Sa 7:22 How great You are, O Lord GOD! For there is none like You…

Solomon asks God to carry out the promise already given, trusting that the Lord’s word will not fail. The future of Israel’s kingship and worship depends on God’s continued faithfulness.

But will God indeed dwell with man upon the earth?

At the dedication of the temple, Solomon marvels that the holy Creator would choose to make His name and presence known among His people. Israel’s God was not a local deity bound to a shrine, yet He graciously established the temple as the appointed place of worship and prayer.

Jhn 1:14 The Word became flesh and made His dwelling among us.…
Rev 21:3 And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying:…
Ezk 37:27 My dwelling place will be with them; I will be their God…

Jer 23:24 Can a man hide in secret places where I cannot see him?…

much less this temple I have built.

Though magnificent, Solomon’s temple could not contain God. Its purpose was to bear God’s name, provide a center for Israel’s worship, and testify that the Lord had chosen to dwell among His covenant people.

Act 7:48-50 However, the Most High does not dwell in houses…
1Ki 8:13 I have indeed built You an exalted house,…

Yet regard the prayer and plea of Your servant,

Solomon dedicates the temple as Israel’s king, yet comes before God in humility, dependent on His mercy. Though the temple was built for the worship of the LORD, it did not limit God’s presence; it was the appointed place where Israel would seek Him.

Neh 1:6 Your eyes be open and Your ears attentive to hear…
Dan 9:17-19 So now, our God, hear the prayers and petitions…

O LORD my God,

Solomon appeals to the covenant God of Israel with personal faith and submission. The God who had established David’s house and fulfilled His promise through the temple alone could hear and answer.

Solomon asks God to receive both the urgent appeals and the regular petitions offered by His people. Israel’s security and restoration depended not on the building itself, but on the LORD’s response to those who turned to Him.

Jer 52:15 Then Nebuzaradan captain of the guard carried into exile…
2Ch 36:20 Those who escaped the sword were carried by…

to a land far or near,

Whether carried into neighboring territory or distant lands, Israel would remain under God’s rule and could still turn to Him in confession and prayer.

Deu 28:49 The LORD will bring a nation from afar…
Ezk 11:16 Therefore declare that this is what the Lord GOD says:…
Deu 28:64 Then the LORD will scatter you among all the nations,…

and when they come to their senses in the land to which they were taken,

Solomon anticipates that Israel’s exile would bring them to recognize that their suffering resulted from covenant unfaithfulness. Assyria and Babylon later carried Israelites from their land, just as God had warned.

1Ki 8:47 We have sinned and done wrong; we have acted wickedly…
Deu 30:1 When all these things come upon you—the blessings and curses…
Lev 26:40 But if they will confess their iniquity…

and they repent and plead with You in the land of their captors,

Even in captivity, Israel could turn to the Lord, confess their rebellion, and seek His mercy. Their distance from Jerusalem and the temple would not prevent God from hearing a humble prayer.

1Ki 8:48 and when they return to You with all their heart and soul…
Deu 30:2-3 and when you and your children return to the LORD…
Lev 26:41-42 and I acted with hostility toward them and brought them…

saying, ‘We have sinned and done wrong; we have acted wickedly,’

Their confession would leave no excuse or blame-shifting. By admitting the full extent of their rebellion, they would acknowledge God’s justice and appeal to His covenant mercy.

Dan 9:5 we have sinned and done wrong. We have acted wickedly.…
Neh 9:33 You are just in all that has befallen us…
Neh 1:6-7 Your eyes be open and Your ears attentive to hear…

and when they return to You with all their heart and soul

Repentance must involve the whole person, marked by a sincere rejection of sin and renewed allegiance to God. Even after judgment, Israel would not be beyond restoration if the people turned back to Him genuinely.

Deu 4:29 But if from there you will seek the LORD your God,…
Deu 30:2 and when you and your children return to the LORD…
Jer 29:13 You will seek Me and find Me when you search for Me…

in the land of the enemies who took them captive,

Exile would place Israel under foreign power because of persistent disobedience. Yet captivity would not remove them from God’s rule or prevent Him from hearing their prayers.

1Ki 8:46 When they sin against You—for there is no one…
Lev 26:39-42 Those of you who survive in the lands of your enemies…
Deu 30:1-5 When all these things come upon you—the blessings and curses…

and when they pray in the direction of the land that You gave to their fathers,

Facing the land expressed confidence in God’s covenant promises to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob and hope for return to the inheritance He had given Israel.

1Ki 8:48 and when they return to You with all their heart and soul…
Dan 6:10 Now when Daniel learned that the document had been signed…
Neh 1:8-9 Remember, I pray, the word that You commanded…

the city You have chosen,

Jerusalem was the place God selected for His name and for the central worship of Israel. Its significance rested on God’s choice and the presence of the temple.

1Ki 11:36 I will give one tribe to his son, so that My servant David…
2Ki 21:7 Manasseh even took the carved Asherah pole he had made…
Psa 132:13-14 For the LORD has chosen Zion; He has desired it…

and the house I have built for Your Name,

Solomon’s temple was dedicated to the honor of God and served as the appointed center for sacrifice, prayer, and worship. It testified that God had placed His name among His people, though He was not confined to the building.

1Ki 9:3 And the LORD said to him: “I have heard your prayer…
2Ch 7:16 For I have now chosen and consecrated this temple…
1Ki 8:29 May Your eyes be open toward this temple night and day,…

then may You hear from heaven, Your dwelling place,

Solomon appeals to the God who rules from heaven and cannot be contained by the temple, though He chose it as the place where His name would dwell.

1Ki 8:39 For You alone know the hearts of all men—…
1Ki 8:30 Hear the plea of Your servant and of Your people Israel…
2Ch 30:27 Then the priests and the Levites stood to bless the people,…

their prayer and pleas,

He asks the Lord to receive Israel’s earnest cries when sin, judgment, captivity, or distress bring them to repentance.

1Ki 8:49 then may You hear from heaven, Your dwelling place,…
Dan 9:17 So now, our God, hear the prayers and petitions…
Psa 86:6 Hear my prayer, O LORD, and attend to my plea for mercy.

and may You uphold their cause.

God is asked to judge righteously, defend His covenant people, and act for them according to His mercy and justice.

Psa 140:12 I know that the LORD upholds justice for the poor…
Psa 43:1 Vindicate me, O God, and plead my case…
Pro 31:9 Open your mouth, judge righteously, and defend…

May You forgive Your people who sinned against You.

Solomon recognizes that Israel’s greatest need is forgiveness. Restoration depends not on their merit, but on God’s willingness to pardon those who turn back to Him.

1Ki 8:50 May You forgive Your people who have sinned against You…
Dan 9:19 O Lord, listen! O Lord, forgive! O Lord, hear and act!…
Psa 85:2 You forgave the iniquity of Your people;…

Now, my God,

Solomon addresses the Lord personally as the covenant God of Israel, acknowledging His authority over the temple and the nation.

Dan 9:18 Incline Your ear, O my God, and hear; open Your eyes and see…
Ezr 9:6 O my God, I am ashamed and embarrassed…
Neh 1:6 Your eyes be open and Your ears attentive to hear…

may Your eyes be open

He asks God to watch over the temple and remain mindful of the needs of His people who turn toward it in repentance and prayer.

1Ki 8:29 May Your eyes be open toward this temple night and day,…
2Ki 19:16 Incline Your ear, O LORD, and hear; open Your eyes,…
Isa 37:17 Incline Your ear, O LORD, and hear; open Your eyes, O LORD,…

and Your ears attentive

Solomon appeals for God to hear the petitions brought before Him, trusting that the Lord receives the prayers of those who seek Him.

Psa 130:2 O Lord, hear my voice; let Your ears be attentive…
1Pe 3:12 For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous…
Psa 34:15 The eyes of the LORD are on the righteous…

to the prayer offered in this place.

The temple in Jerusalem was the appointed center of Israel’s worship, built as the place where God had chosen to set His name and where sacrifices and prayers were offered.

2Ch 7:15 Now My eyes will be open, and My ears attentive…
1Ki 8:28 Yet regard the prayer and plea of Your servant,…
1Ki 8:30 Hear the plea of Your servant and of Your people Israel…

Now therefore, arise, O LORD God,

Solomon calls upon the Lord to manifest His presence after the completion of the temple. As the ark had accompanied Israel through the wilderness, its placement in the temple marked the establishment of God’s chosen house in Jerusalem.

Num 10:35 Whenever the ark set out, Moses would say, “Rise up, O LORD!…
Psa 3:7 Arise, O LORD! Save me, O my God! Strike all my enemies…
Psa 68:1 For the choirmaster. A Psalm of David. A song. God arises.…

and enter Your resting place,

The temple became the appointed place for Israel’s worship and for the Lord’s name to dwell among His people. Its completion represented peace, order, and the fulfillment of David’s desire to build a permanent house for the ark.

Psa 132:8 Arise, O LORD, to Your resting place, You and the ark…
Psa 132:13-14 For the LORD has chosen Zion; He has desired it…
1Ki 8:13 I have indeed built You an exalted house,…

You and the ark of Your might.

The ark testified to God’s covenant, authority, and mighty acts on Israel’s behalf. Its presence in the Most Holy Place affirmed that the Lord remained faithful to His promises and ruled in the midst of His people.

2Sa 6:2-3 And he and all his troops set out for Baale of Judah…
1Ch 15:28 So all Israel brought up the ark of the covenant of the LORD…
Jos 3:11 Behold, the ark of the covenant of the Lord of all the earth…

May Your priests, O LORD God, be clothed with salvation,

Solomon asks that the priests who minister before the Lord be marked by His deliverance, righteousness, and favor. Their service depended not merely on sacred garments or ritual duties, but on God’s preserving grace.

Psa 132:16 I will clothe her priests with salvation,…
Isa 61:10 I will rejoice greatly in the LORD, my soul will exult…
Zec 3:4-5 So the angel said to those standing before him…

and may Your godly ones rejoice in goodness.

The faithful in Israel were to rejoice in the blessings God gave through His covenant, His temple, and His presence among them. Their joy rested in the Lord’s goodness and faithfulness to His people.

Psa 132:9 May Your priests be clothed with righteousness,…
Psa 149:5 Let the saints exult in glory; let them shout for joy…
Psa 68:3 But the righteous will be glad and rejoice before God;…

O LORD God,

Solomon appeals to the covenant God of Israel at the dedication of the temple, acknowledging His supreme rule and His faithfulness to the people He chose.

do not reject Your anointed one.

Psa 132:10 For the sake of Your servant David, do not reject…
Psa 89:38 Now, however, You have spurned and rejected him;…
1Sa 26:11 But the LORD forbid that I should extend my hand…

Remember Your loving devotion to Your servant David.”

The prayer rests on God’s enduring covenant promise to David, whose royal line would ultimately lead to the Messiah.

2Sa 7:15 But My loving devotion will never be removed from him…
Psa 18:50 Great salvation He brings to His king. He shows devotion…
Psa 89:28-29 I will forever preserve My loving devotion for him,…
