Berean Study Bible The Conquest of AiAfter Achan’s sin had been judged and removed from the camp, the LORD again directed Joshua, confirming that he remained Israel’s appointed leader. Jos 1:1 Now after the death of His servant Moses,… “Do not be afraid or discouraged. Israel’s earlier defeat at Ai had exposed the consequences of disobedience, but it did not cancel God’s purpose for the nation. Joshua was to move forward in confidence under God’s command. Jos 1:9 Have I not commanded you to be strong and courageous?… Take the whole army with you, Unlike the first attempt, Israel would not rely on a small force or human assessment of Ai’s strength. The entire army would participate in the campaign. Deu 3:18 At that time I commanded you: “The LORD your God… and go up and attack Ai. Ai stood in the hill country, and Israel was commanded to renew the attack according to God’s plan. Jdg 1:2 “Judah shall go up,” answered the LORD. “Indeed,… See, I have delivered into your hand the king of Ai, The outcome was assured before the battle began. Ai’s king and defenses were under God’s authority. Jos 6:2 And the LORD said to Joshua, “Behold, I have delivered… his people, his city, and his land. Israel’s victory would include the city, its inhabitants, and its territory, advancing the conquest of the land God had promised to give them. Deu 3:2 But the LORD said to me, “Do not fear him… And you shall do to Ai and its king as you did to Jericho and its king, Ai would be decisively conquered, and its king removed, confirming that Israel’s advance into Canaan rested on the Lord’s command and power. The earlier defeat at Ai had resulted from Israel’s disobedience; this victory would follow renewed obedience and careful execution of God’s instructions. Jos 6:21 With the edge of the sword they devoted to destruction… except that you may carry off their plunder and livestock for yourselves. Unlike Jericho, whose possessions were devoted to the Lord, Ai’s goods were given to Israel. The spoil supplied the people during the campaign and showed that God could provide for them through the land they were taking. Deu 20:14 But the women, children, livestock, and whatever else… Set up an ambush behind the city.” Joshua was to draw Ai’s defenders away from the city while a concealed force entered and burned it. The plan required coordination, discipline, and trust in God’s direction, joining military strategy with the certainty of the promised victory. Jdg 20:29-33 So Israel set up an ambush around Gibeah.… So Joshua and the whole army set out to attack Ai. After Achan’s sin had been judged and Israel restored to fellowship with God, Joshua led the nation back against Ai. The entire fighting force moved in obedience to the Lord’s command, unlike the earlier attack, when only a small contingent had been sent. Jos 7:4-5 So about three thousand men went up, but they fled… Joshua chose 30,000 mighty men of valor Joshua selected a large force of experienced, courageous warriors for a carefully planned ambush. Their number reflects the seriousness of the campaign and Israel’s determination not to repeat the earlier defeat. Deu 3:18 At that time I commanded you: “The LORD your God… and sent them out at night The men traveled under cover of darkness to take their assigned position behind Ai. Their night movement prepared the surprise attack that would draw the city’s defenders away and secure Israel’s victory. Jdg 7:19-22 Gideon and the hundred men with him reached the outskirts… with these orders: “Pay attention. Joshua directs the force assigned to the ambush as Israel prepares to attack Ai again under God’s instruction. Deu 27:9 Then Moses and the Levitical priests spoke to all Israel:… You are to lie in ambush behind the city, A selected detachment was to conceal itself west of Ai, identified with modern et-Tell, while Joshua positioned the main force to the north, drawing the city’s defenders away. Jdg 20:29 So Israel set up an ambush around Gibeah. not too far from it. The men needed to remain close enough to enter quickly when Ai’s army pursued Joshua’s retreating force. Exo 8:28 “I will let you go and sacrifice to the LORD your God”… All of you must be ready. The success of the plan depended on disciplined obedience and immediate action at the appointed signal. Ezk 38:7 Get ready; prepare yourself, you and all your company… Then I and all the troops with me will advance on the city. Joshua would lead the visible force toward Ai while a larger body of soldiers waited in ambush behind the city. After Israel’s earlier defeat because of Achan’s sin, the Lord gave Joshua a clear plan for taking Ai. The city’s capture was necessary to secure Israel’s position in the central hill country near Bethel. Deu 20:10-12 When you approach a city to fight against it,… When they come out against us as they did the first time, Ai’s leaders expected another easy victory because they had previously driven Israel’s smaller force into flight. Their confidence would lead them to pursue Joshua’s troops beyond the city gates. Jdg 20:31-32 The Benjamites came out against them, and were drawn away… we will flee from them. Joshua’s retreat was deliberate, intended to draw Ai’s defenders away from their fortified city. Once the men of Ai were out in pursuit, the ambush force would enter, burn the city, and cut off the enemy’s escape. Jdg 20:33-36 So all the men of Israel got up from their places… They will pursue us until we have drawn them away from the city, Joshua’s forces would feign retreat, drawing Ai’s defenders out from behind their walls and leaving the city exposed to the ambush force God had appointed. Jdg 20:32-33 “We are defeating them as before,” said the Benjamites.… for they will say, ‘The Israelites are running away from us as they did before.’ Ai remembered Israel’s earlier defeat, when Achan’s sin had brought judgment upon the camp. Expecting the same result, the men of Ai would pursue with confidence and abandon the protection of their city. Jdg 20:39-41 The men of Israel would turn in the battle.… So as we flee from them, Israel’s withdrawal was not panic but obedience to Joshua’s plan. Their apparent weakness would place Ai in the position God had determined, allowing the ambush to capture and burn the city. Jdg 20:36-37 Then the Benjamites realized they had been defeated.… you are to rise from the ambush At the appointed moment, the hidden Israelite force was to move against Ai after its defenders had been drawn away from the city. Jdg 20:34 Then 10,000 select men from all Israel… and seize the city, Ai’s capture would secure Israel’s position in central Canaan and reverse the earlier defeat caused by Achan’s sin. Jos 6:20 So when the rams’ horns sounded, the people shouted.… for the LORD your God Israel’s success depended on the covenant God who directed the battle and remained faithful to His people. Deu 20:4 For the LORD your God goes with you to fight for you… will deliver it into your hand. The victory was certain because God had promised it, while Israel was responsible to obey His command carefully. Exo 23:31 And I will establish your borders from the Red Sea…… And when you have taken the city, Israel’s victory over Ai reversed the earlier defeat brought about by Achan’s sin. Following the Lord’s plan, Joshua positioned an ambush behind the city while the main force drew its defenders away. Jos 6:20 So when the rams’ horns sounded, the people shouted.… set it on fire. Once Ai was captured, the Israelites were to burn it completely, carrying out God’s judgment on the city and ending its power as a Canaanite stronghold. Jdg 1:8 Then the men of Judah fought against Jerusalem… Do as the LORD has commanded! Success depended on careful obedience to the Lord’s instructions. Joshua’s command reminded the people that the victory belonged to God and could not be secured by human strength alone. Deu 12:32 See that you do everything I command you;… See, I have given you orders.” Joshua spoke with the authority entrusted to him as Israel’s leader. His directions gave the army a clear plan and united them in carrying out the Lord’s command. Jos 1:9 Have I not commanded you to be strong and courageous?… So Joshua sent them out, Joshua carried out the plan God had given for the capture of Ai, directing the chosen men to take their assigned positions. Jos 2:1 Then Joshua son of Nun secretly sent two spies… and they went to the place of ambush The ambush force prepared to strike when Ai’s defenders left the city, while the main Israelite force drew them away. Jdg 9:25 The leaders of Shechem set up an ambush against Abimelech… and lay in wait between Bethel and Ai, Their position placed them near both cities, allowing them to intercept any support from Bethel, meaning “house of God,” and seize Ai once its defenders pursued Joshua. Gen 12:8 From there Abram moved on to the hill country east of Bethel… to the west of Ai. The western location concealed the men from the city and placed them behind Ai, meaning “ruin,” cutting off escape and securing the planned attack. Jos 7:2 Meanwhile, Joshua sent men from Jericho to Ai,… But Joshua spent that night among the people. Joshua remained with the army before the battle, sharing their danger and overseeing the final preparations for the victory God had promised. 1Sa 26:7 That night David and Abishai came to the troops,… Joshua got up early the next morning Joshua acted promptly after receiving God’s instructions, showing renewed obedience following Israel’s earlier failure at Ai. Jos 3:1 Early the next morning Joshua got up and left Shittim… and mobilized his men, He organized the army for the operation God had commanded, preparing them to carry out the ambush against the city. 2Sa 18:1 Then David reviewed his troops and appointed… and he and the elders of Israel The elders accompanied Joshua as representatives of the nation, demonstrating that the campaign involved Israel’s united leadership. Jos 24:1 Then Joshua assembled all the tribes of Israel at Shechem.… marched before them Joshua and the elders led the advance toward Ai, setting an example of courage and sharing the risk faced by the soldiers. Num 27:17 who will go out and come in before them,… up to Ai. The ascent to Ai brought Israel back to the place of its previous defeat, where obedience to God’s plan would now lead to victory. Jos 7:3 On returning to Joshua, they reported, “There is no need… Then all the troops who were with him marched up and approached the city. Joshua led the main force toward Ai in open view, drawing the defenders’ attention and preparing the way for the ambush God had commanded. Israel acted in ordered obedience after its earlier defeat, carrying out the plan without deviation. Jos 10:7 So Joshua and his whole army, including all… They arrived in front of Ai and camped to the north of it, The main camp stood north of Ai, positioned for the direct engagement that would lure the city’s soldiers away. From this location Joshua could coordinate the visible army with the hidden force placed west of the city. Jdg 7:1 Early in the morning Jerubbaal (that is, Gideon)… with the valley between them and the city. The valley separated Israel’s camp from Ai and formed the ground over which the men of Ai would pursue Joshua’s force. Its location helped conceal the larger strategy until Ai’s defenders had left the city exposed. 1Sa 17:3 The Philistines stood on one hill and the Israelites… Now Joshua had taken about five thousand men Joshua assigned a smaller force to a specific role in the attack on Ai, following the plan the Lord had given him. Their number was sufficient for concealment and a sudden strike while the main body of Israel drew Ai’s defenders from the city. 1Sa 13:2 He chose for himself three thousand men of Israel:… and set up an ambush The ambush answered the failure of Israel’s earlier assault. Joshua now acted in obedience, using disciplined preparation to bring Ai’s army into a position where it could be defeated. Jdg 20:29 So Israel set up an ambush around Gibeah. between Bethel and Ai, The position placed the hidden force near the route connecting Ai, meaning “ruin,” with Bethel, meaning “house of God,” limiting the enemy’s ability to receive support and placing the ambushers close enough to strike when Ai’s men pursued Israel. Gen 13:3 From the Negev he journeyed from place to place… to the west of the city. Concealed west of Ai among the rugged terrain, the force could remain unseen until the city’s defenders had left in pursuit of Joshua’s retreating troops. Gen 12:8 From there Abram moved on to the hill country east of Bethel… So the forces were stationed with the main camp to the north of the city Israel’s main force stood north of Ai, drawing the defenders’ attention toward the apparent point of attack. The location provided room for the army to maneuver while concealing the larger plan God had given Joshua. Num 2:25-31 On the north side, the divisions of Dan are to camp… and the rear guard to the west of the city. The ambush force waited west of Ai, positioned to enter the city after its soldiers left to pursue Israel. With forces on both sides, Ai would be exposed and unable to retreat once the trap was sprung. Num 2:18-24 On the west side, the divisions of Ephraim are to camp… And that night Joshua went into the valley. Joshua moved into the valley between the opposing forces, directing the operation from the field rather than remaining behind the army. His presence demonstrated obedience to God’s command and prepared Israel for the victory that would follow. Jos 10:9-11 After marching all night from Gilgal,… When the king of Ai saw the Israelites, Ai’s ruler recognized Israel’s approach and responded quickly, likely encouraged by Ai’s earlier victory over Israel. Exo 14:10 As Pharaoh approached, the Israelites looked up and… he hurried out early in the morning Acting at daybreak, he moved before Israel could appear fully prepared. Gen 22:3 So Abraham got up early the next morning,… with the men of the city The fighting force of Ai joined him, leaving the city exposed. Gen 19:4 Before they had gone to bed, all the men of the city… to engage them in battle The king expected to meet Israel openly and drive them back as before. Num 21:23 But Sihon would not let Israel pass through his territory.… at an appointed place He led his men to a position overlooking the Arabah, where the terrain allowed Ai to pursue Israel’s apparent retreat. Jdg 7:16-22 And he divided the three hundred men into three companies… overlooking the Arabah. The Arabah is a desert region south of the Dead Sea, extending to the Gulf of Aqaba. This geographical reference provides context for the battle's location, emphasizing the varied terrain the Israelites had to navigate during their conquest. Deu 34:1-3 Then Moses went up from the plains of Moab to Mount Nebo,… But he did not know that an ambush had been set up against him behind the city. Joshua had positioned Israel’s concealed force behind Ai, and the king’s confidence drew his army away from the city into the trap. Jdg 20:29-33 So Israel set up an ambush around Gibeah.… Joshua and all Israel let themselves be beaten back before them, Joshua and the main Israelite force deliberately retreated before Ai, following the plan God had given him. Their apparent defeat encouraged the men of Ai to pursue them with confidence, drawing the city’s defenders away from its protection. Jdg 20:36 Then the Benjamites realized they had been defeated.… and they fled toward the wilderness. Israel’s retreat led Ai’s army eastward into the barren region east of Ai, likely the Judean wilderness, away from the city and the hidden ambush force. Once Ai was left exposed, Joshua’s men could seize and burn it, turning Ai’s pursuit into its defeat. Jdg 20:42 So they fled before the men of Israel toward the wilderness… Then all the men of Ai were summoned to pursue them, Ai’s fighting force responded quickly, confident that Israel was again retreating in fear. Their full pursuit left the city exposed and placed the outcome in the hands of Israel’s divinely directed strategy. Jdg 20:31-32 The Benjamites came out against them, and were drawn away… and they followed Joshua Joshua led the apparent retreat, drawing Ai’s defenders farther from their stronghold. The enemy focused on the fleeing Israelites and failed to recognize that an ambush force was positioned behind them. Jos 1:16-18 So they answered Joshua, “Everything you have commanded us… and were drawn away from the city. With Ai’s men pulled away, Israel could seize the undefended city, bringing judgment upon it and reversing the earlier defeat. Jdg 20:36-37 Then the Benjamites realized they had been defeated.… Not a man was left in Ai or Bethel Ai and nearby Bethel committed all their available fighting men to the pursuit, showing how fully they expected to defeat Israel. Their decision left both cities without defenders. 1Sa 30:17 And David struck them down from twilight until… who did not go out after Israel, Encouraged by Israel’s earlier defeat at Ai, the Canaanites believed the retreating Israelites were again fleeing. They did not recognize that Joshua was carrying out God’s command through a planned ambush. Jos 7:4-5 So about three thousand men went up, but they fled… leaving the city wide open With the army drawn away, Ai was exposed to the Israelites waiting behind it. The city’s apparent security depended entirely on its soldiers returning in time. 2Ki 7:7 Thus the Arameans had arisen and fled at twilight… while they pursued Israel. Their pursuit carried them farther from Ai and into the trap Joshua had prepared. Their confidence became the means by which the city fell. 1Sa 31:1-2 Now the Philistines fought against Israel, and many fell… Then the LORD said to Joshua, God directs Joshua at the decisive moment of Israel’s attack on Ai, showing that the victory is governed by His command rather than Israel’s strength. Jos 6:2 And the LORD said to Joshua, “Behold, I have delivered… “Hold out your battle lance toward Ai, Joshua is to raise his weapon visibly toward the city as the battle unfolds. The gesture marks his continuing dependence on God while Israel carries out the plan already given. 2Ki 13:16-17 Then Elisha said to the king of Israel, “Put your hand… for into your hand I will deliver the city.” God assures Joshua that Ai will fall under Israel’s control. Though the city is fortified and its defenders prepared, its outcome has been determined by the Lord. Jos 10:8 The LORD said to Joshua, “Do not be afraid of them.”… So Joshua held out his battle lance toward Ai, Joshua obeys without hesitation and remains in position until the battle is complete. His obedience reflects the renewed faithfulness required of Israel after the earlier defeat at Ai. Exo 17:11-13 As long as Moses held up his hands, Israel prevailed;… and as soon as he did so, Joshua’s raised javelin gave the agreed signal for the ambush to act, following the command God had given him. 1Sa 14:20 Then Saul and all his troops assembled and marched… the men in ambush rose quickly from their position. Hidden west of Ai, the Israelite force responded at once, showing the discipline necessary for the plan to succeed. Jdg 20:33 So all the men of Israel got up from their places… They rushed forward, Their speed prevented Ai’s defenders from returning in time to protect the city after pursuing Israel’s main force. Jdg 9:44 Then Abimelech and the companies with him rushed forward… entered the city, With Ai largely unguarded, the ambush force gained access and secured the strategic stronghold near Bethel. 2Sa 5:6-7 Now the king and his men marched to Jerusalem… captured it, The victory reversed Israel’s earlier defeat at Ai, which had followed Achan’s sin, and confirmed God’s restoration of His favor after Israel dealt with that disobedience. Jdg 9:45 And all that day Abimelech fought against the city… and immediately set it on fire. The smoke rising from the city signaled to Joshua and the fleeing Israelites that the ambush had succeeded and cut off Ai’s army from retreat. Jos 6:24 Then the Israelites burned up the city and everything in it.… When the men of Ai turned and looked back, When the men of Ai turned and looked back, they saw that Joshua’s strategy had succeeded. Their pursuit of Israel’s apparent retreat had drawn them away from the city, leaving them unable to respond effectively. Gen 19:26 But Lot’s wife looked back, and she became a pillar of salt. the smoke of the city was rising into the sky. The signal showed that the ambush force had captured and burned Ai as God had commanded. Seeing their city in flames, Ai’s soldiers recognized that the battle had turned decisively against them. Jdg 20:40 But when the column of smoke began to go up from the city,… They could not escape in any direction, Ai’s army could not escape in any direction. The Israelites they had pursued stood behind them, while the troops who had captured the city blocked their way ahead. 2Ki 25:4-5 Then the city was breached; and though the Chaldeans… and the troops who had fled to the wilderness now turned against their pursuers. Israel’s retreat had been deliberate, drawing Ai’s defenders into the open. At Joshua’s command, the fleeing troops reversed course and joined the ambush force, completing the defeat of Ai. Jdg 20:34-42 Then 10,000 select men from all Israel… When Joshua and all Israel saw that the men in ambush had captured the city Joshua’s force had drawn Ai’s defenders away from the city, allowing the ambush party to enter and seize it. Israel’s obedience to God’s battle plan turned what had appeared to be a retreat into a decisive victory. Jdg 20:37 The men in ambush rushed suddenly against Gibeah;… and that smoke was rising from it, The smoke confirmed that Ai had fallen and signaled Joshua’s main force to reverse course. With the city occupied and burning behind them, the men of Ai were trapped between the Israelites. Jdg 20:38-40 The men of Israel had arranged a signal:… they turned around and struck down the men of Ai. Israel attacked from the front while the ambush force came out from the city behind them. Ai’s army had no avenue of escape, and the city’s defeat completed the judgment God had commanded. Jdg 20:41-42 Then the men of Israel turned back on them… Meanwhile, those in the ambush came out of the city against them, Joshua’s forces carried out the plan God had given them, turning Ai’s pursuit into a trap. The ambush force entered the city after its defenders had been drawn away, cutting off any retreat. Jdg 20:33 So all the men of Israel got up from their places… and the men of Ai were trapped between the Israelite forces on both sides. Ai’s army, having left the city to pursue Israel, suddenly faced Israelite soldiers before and behind them. Their confidence after the earlier defeat of Israel gave way to disaster as Joshua’s army closed in. 2Ch 13:13-14 Now Jeroboam had sent troops around to ambush from the rear,… So Israel struck them down until no survivor or fugitive remained. The defeat of Ai was complete, fulfilling God’s command and judgment against the city. Israel’s victory came through careful obedience to God’s instructions rather than military strength alone. 2Ch 20:24 When the men of Judah came to a place… But they took the king of Ai alive Ai’s king was captured during Israel’s complete defeat of the city. His capture showed that Ai’s military resistance had been broken and that its ruler was subject to Israel’s authority. Located near Bethel, Ai held importance in the central hill country, and its fall opened the way for Israel’s advance through Canaan. 1Sa 15:8-9 He captured Agag king of Amalek alive, but devoted… and brought him to Joshua. The king was brought before Joshua, who carried out the judgment God had commanded against Ai. As Israel’s appointed leader, Joshua acted under God’s direction, and the king’s surrender marked the defeat of a city that had opposed Israel’s entrance into the land. 1Sa 15:32-33 Then Samuel said, “Bring me Agag king of the Amalekites.”… When Israel had finished killing all the men of Ai who had pursued them into the field and wilderness, Joshua’s feigned retreat drew Ai’s fighting men away from the city and into the open country, where Israel’s ambush and pursuing forces surrounded them. The plan succeeded because Israel followed the command God had given after the earlier defeat caused by Achan’s sin. Jos 11:8 and the LORD delivered them into the hand of Israel… and when every last one of them had fallen by the sword, Ai’s army was completely defeated. Their destruction marked God’s judgment on a Canaanite city and removed the force that had resisted Israel’s entrance into the land. Jos 11:11 The Israelites put everyone in Hazor to the sword.… all the Israelites returned to Ai With its defenders gone, Israel returned to the now-exposed city. The battle had moved from the surrounding countryside to Ai itself, securing Israel’s control of the area. Jos 10:15 Then Joshua returned with all Israel to the camp at Gilgal. and put it to the sword as well. The inhabitants of Ai were destroyed in keeping with God’s judgment and His command concerning the conquest. Ai’s fall showed that victory and possession of the land depended on Israel’s obedience to the Lord. Jos 10:28 On that day Joshua captured Makkedah and put it to the sword… A total of twelve thousand men and women fell that day— The entire population of Ai was destroyed after Israel’s victory. Though smaller than Jericho, Ai held strategic importance in the central hill country. Its fall followed Israel’s earlier defeat there, which resulted from Achan’s disobedience. After sin was judged and Israel returned to obedience, God gave Joshua victory. Jos 6:21 With the edge of the sword they devoted to destruction… all the people of Ai. The destruction was complete, carrying out God’s judgment on the Canaanites and removing a stronghold of idolatry from the land He had promised Israel. Ai’s fate also warned Israel that possession of the land depended on faithful obedience to the covenant. Jos 11:11 The Israelites put everyone in Hazor to the sword.… Joshua did not draw back the hand that held his battle lance Joshua maintained the signal God had given for the attack until the victory was complete. His raised weapon directed Israel’s forces and displayed resolute obedience as the battle unfolded. 2Sa 23:10-12 Eleazar stood his ground and struck the Philistines… until he had devoted to destruction Ai’s defeat followed God’s command that the city’s inhabitants be placed under judgment. Unlike Jericho’s valuables, Ai’s livestock and spoil were permitted to Israel, but the people of the city were not spared. Deu 7:2 and when the LORD your God has delivered them over to you… all who lived in Ai. The destruction of Ai removed a Canaanite stronghold from Israel’s path and reversed the earlier defeat caused by Achan’s sin. Israel’s victory demonstrated that success in the land depended upon God’s presence and obedience to His command. Jos 10:28 On that day Joshua captured Makkedah and put it to the sword… Israel took for themselves only the cattle and plunder of that city, Unlike Jericho, Ai was not placed under the ban of total destruction. God permitted Israel to keep its livestock and material goods, providing for the nation after their obedience in carrying out His command. Such spoils were customary rewards in ancient warfare, yet Israel received them only by the Lord’s authorization. Deu 2:35 We carried off only the livestock and the plunder… as the LORD had commanded Joshua. Joshua carried out God’s instructions precisely, demonstrating the obedience required of Israel’s leader as they entered and settled the Promised Land. The differing commands for Jericho and Ai show that the Lord alone determined what was devoted to destruction and what was given to His people. Jos 1:2-3 Moses My servant is dead. Now therefore arise… So Joshua burned Ai In obedience to God’s command, Joshua destroyed Ai after Israel’s victory. Like Jericho, the city came under God’s judgment as a Canaanite stronghold resisting His purposes for Israel. Deu 13:16 And you are to gather all its plunder in the public square… and made it a permanent heap of ruins, Ai was left utterly destroyed rather than occupied or restored. Its ruin demonstrated the completeness of Israel’s conquest and the certainty of God’s judgment against those who opposed Him. Jer 51:37 Babylon will become a heap of rubble, a haunt for jackals… a desolation to this day. The visible ruins remained as a lasting witness to Ai’s fall and to the consequences of resisting God’s command. Jer 49:33 Hazor will become a haunt for jackals, a desolation forever.… He hung the king of Ai on a tree until evening, The public display of Ai’s king marked the city’s complete defeat under God’s judgment. His death showed that the ruler who had opposed Israel could no longer protect his people or city. Deu 21:22-23 If a man has committed a sin worthy of death,… and at sunset Joshua commanded that they take down the body from the tree Joshua followed the command that a body placed on a tree was not to remain there overnight. Even after victory in battle, Israel was to obey God’s law and avoid defiling the land. Mrk 15:42-46 Now it was already evening. Since it was Preparation Day… and throw it down at the entrance of the city gate. The city gate had been the center of Ai’s authority and public life. Placing the king’s body there declared the fall of the city and the end of his rule. Deu 22:24 you must take both of them out to the gate… And over it they raised a large pile of rocks, The stone heap marked the judgment of Ai’s king and preserved the memory of Israel’s victory. Jos 7:26 And they heaped over Achan a large pile of rocks… which remains to this day. The memorial remained as a visible witness to the destruction of Ai and the fulfillment of God’s command to give the city into Israel’s hand. Jos 4:9 Joshua also set up twelve stones in the middle…
Joshua Renews the CovenantFollowing Israel’s victory at Ai, Joshua led the nation in renewing its covenant commitment to the LORD. Deu 27:1 Then Moses and the elders of Israel commanded the people:… Joshua built an altar In obedience to Moses’ command, he prepared a place for sacrifice and worship, publicly affirming that Israel’s possession of the land depended on the LORD. Deu 27:5 Moreover, you are to build there an altar to the LORD… on Mount Ebal Located near Shechem in central Canaan, Mount Ebal was associated with the covenant curses, reminding Israel of the consequences of disobedience. Deu 27:4 And when you have crossed the Jordan, set up these stones… to the LORD, The altar was devoted to Israel’s covenant God alone, not to the gods of Canaan. Exo 24:5 Then he sent out some young men of Israel,… the God of Israel, Joshua’s act confirmed that the nation belonged to the LORD and was accountable to live under His law. Jos 24:2 And Joshua said to all the people, “This is what the LORD… just as Moses the servant of the LORD had commanded the Israelites. Joshua carried out Moses’ instruction for an altar on Mount Ebal, confirming Israel’s obedience to the covenant and the continuity of leadership under God’s authority. Deu 27:1 Then Moses and the elders of Israel commanded the people:… He built it according to what is written in the Book of the Law of Moses: The altar was built according to the written commands God had given through Moses, showing that Israel’s worship was governed by God’s revealed law rather than human preference. Deu 31:24-26 When Moses had finished writing in a book… “an altar of uncut stones on which no iron tool has been used.” The uncut stones preserved the altar from human alteration and honored God’s command that sacred worship not depend on human craftsmanship. Deu 27:5-6 Moreover, you are to build there an altar to the LORD… And on it they offered burnt offerings to the LORD, The burnt offerings expressed atonement for sin and complete consecration to the LORD. Exo 24:5 Then he sent out some young men of Israel,… and they sacrificed peace offerings. The peace offerings marked thanksgiving, fellowship, and restored communion between God and His covenant people. Deu 27:7 There you are to sacrifice your peace offerings…… And there in the presence of the Israelites, Joshua carried out this act openly before the assembled nation. The covenant law was not reserved for Israel’s leaders but stood as the shared obligation of every tribe, family, and individual. Deu 31:11-13 when all Israel comes before the LORD your God… Joshua inscribed on the stones The written record provided a lasting public witness to God’s commands in the land Israel had entered. It fulfilled Moses’ instruction to establish a visible memorial of the law after crossing the Jordan. Deu 27:8 And you shall write distinctly upon these stones… a copy of the law of Moses, Joshua recorded the covenant requirements given through Moses, reaffirming that Israel’s life in Canaan was to be governed by the word God had already given. Deu 17:18-19 When he is seated on his royal throne, he must write… which he had written. Joshua faithfully continued Moses’ work and leadership, preserving the law as the authoritative standard for the nation’s worship, conduct, and covenant faithfulness. Deu 31:9 So Moses wrote down this law and gave it to the priests,… All Israel, foreigners and citizens alike, The whole covenant community was present, including Israelites by birth and foreigners who had joined themselves to Israel and lived under the Lord’s law.
