David Instructs Solomon

As the time drew near for David to die,

David’s long reign over Israel was ending. He had established Jerusalem as the nation’s capital, secured its borders, and united the tribes under one kingdom. His death would bring Solomon to the throne and begin a new stage in Israel’s history.

1Ch 29:28 He died at a ripe old age, full of years, riches, and honor,…
Jos 23:14 Now behold, today I am going the way of all the earth…

he charged his son Solomon,

David gave Solomon, whose name means “peace,” solemn instruction for the responsibilities of kingship. The charge involved more than succession; Solomon was to rule faithfully under God and carry forward the work God had appointed for David’s house, including the building of the temple.

1Ch 22:11-13 Now, my son, may the LORD be with you…
1Ch 28:9-10 As for you, Solomon my son, know the God of your father…
Deu 31:7-8 Then Moses called for Joshua and said to him…

“I am about to go the way of all the earth.

Near death, David recognizes that he will soon share the destiny of every human being. His approaching death marks the end of his reign and prepares for Solomon’s accession to the throne.

Jos 23:14 Now behold, today I am going the way of all the earth…
Gen 47:29 When the time drew near for Israel to die, he called…
Deu 31:14 Then the LORD said to Moses, “Behold, the time of your death…

So be strong

David calls Solomon to face the demands of kingship with courage, steadiness, and dependence on God. Israel’s king needed more than military strength; he needed resolve to govern faithfully.

Jos 1:6 Be strong and courageous, for you shall give…
Deu 31:6 Be strong and courageous; do not be afraid or terrified…
1Ch 28:20 David also said to Solomon his son, “Be strong…

and prove yourself a man.

Solomon was to demonstrate maturity through responsible leadership, obedience to God’s commands, justice, and faithfulness to the covenant. David’s charge sets the standard for Solomon’s reign as he assumes the responsibilities of the throne.

1Co 16:13 Be on the alert. Stand firm in the faith. Be men of courage.…
1Sa 4:9 Take courage and be men, O Philistines!…
2Sa 10:12 Be strong and let us fight bravely for our people…

And keep the charge of the LORD your God

David’s final instruction to Solomon centers on the king’s responsibility before God. Solomon’s rule would not stand merely on political strength or military success, but on faithful submission to the covenant God had made with Israel.

Deu 11:1 You shall therefore love the LORD your God…
Num 9:19 Even when the cloud lingered over the tabernacle…
Lev 8:35 You must remain at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting…

to walk in His ways

Solomon was to order his life and reign according to God’s character and will. His private conduct, public judgments, worship, and leadership were all to reflect loyalty to the LORD.

Deu 10:12 And now, O Israel, what does the LORD your God ask of you…
Deu 8:6 Therefore you shall keep the commandments of the LORD…
Psa 128:1 A song of ascents. Blessed are all who fear the LORD,…

and to keep His statutes, commandments, ordinances, and decrees,

God’s requirements governed every part of Israel’s life, including worship, morality, justice, and national leadership. Solomon was not free to rule by personal preference; he was accountable to the revealed will of God.

Deu 26:17-18 Today you have proclaimed that the LORD is your God…
Deu 8:11 Be careful not to forget the LORD your God…
Deu 6:17 You are to diligently keep the commandments of the LORD…

as written in the Law of Moses,

The king was to lead Israel under the authority of the law God gave through Moses. Israel’s covenant standards were already established, and Solomon was to preserve them rather than reshape them.

Jos 8:31 just as Moses the servant of the LORD had commanded the Israelites. He built it according to what is written in the Book of the Law of Moses: “an altar of uncut stones on which no iron tool has been used.” And on it they offered burnt offerings to the LORD…
Jos 23:6 Be very strong, then, so that you can keep and obey…
2Ki 14:6 Yet he did not put the sons of the murderers to death…

so that you may prosper in all you do and wherever you turn,

God promised success in fulfilling Solomon’s calling as he remained obedient. This prosperity included the stability, wisdom, and strength needed to govern God’s people according to His purposes.

Deu 29:9 So keep and follow the words of this covenant,…
Jos 1:7 Above all, be strong and very courageous.…
Psa 1:3 He is like a tree planted by streams of water,…

and so that the LORD may fulfill His promise to me:

David recalls God’s covenant concerning his house and kingdom. The Lord had chosen David’s line to rule Israel and promised that his dynasty would have an enduring place in His purposes.

1Ki 8:24-25 You have kept Your promise to Your servant, my father David.…
2Sa 7:12-13 And when your days are fulfilled and you rest…
1Ch 17:11-12 And when your days are fulfilled and you go…

‘If your descendants take heed to walk faithfully before Me

Solomon and the kings after him were responsible to rule under God’s authority. Their continued blessing and stability depended on careful obedience rather than merely possessing David’s name or throne.

1Ki 9:4-5 And as for you, if you walk before Me…
1Ki 3:14 So if you walk in My ways and keep My statutes…
Deu 17:18-20 When he is seated on his royal throne, he must write…

with all their heart and soul,

The required faithfulness was wholehearted, involving the inner life as well as public conduct. Israel’s kings were to serve the Lord with undivided loyalty and lead the nation accordingly.

Deu 6:5 And you shall love the LORD your God with all your heart…
Jos 22:5 But be very careful to observe the commandment and the law…
Deu 10:12 And now, O Israel, what does the LORD your God ask of you…

you will never fail to have a man on the throne of Israel.’

David’s descendants ruled Judah until the Babylonian exile, when the monarchy was removed because of persistent rebellion. God’s larger promise to David reaches its permanent fulfillment in Jesus Christ, David’s greater Son and the eternal King.

Jer 33:17 For this is what the LORD says: David will never lack a man…
Psa 132:11-12 The LORD swore an oath to David, a promise…
2Sa 7:16 Your house and kingdom will endure forever…

Moreover, you know what Joab son of Zeruiah did to me—

Joab had served David as commander of the army, but his strength and loyalty were repeatedly marred by ruthless, independent actions that brought grief and political danger to David’s reign.

2Sa 18:14-15 But Joab declared, “I am not going to wait like this!”…
2Sa 3:39 And I am weak this day, though anointed as king,…
1Ki 1:7 So Adonijah conferred with Joab son of Zeruiah…

what he did to Abner son of Ner and Amasa son of Jether, the two commanders of the armies of Israel.

Abner had moved toward peace with David after serving Saul’s house, but Joab murdered him in revenge for the death of his brother Asahel. Amasa, whom David appointed to lead the army in Joab’s place, was also murdered by Joab as he sought to preserve his own authority.

2Sa 3:27 When Abner returned to Hebron, Joab pulled him aside…
2Sa 20:10 Amasa was not on guard against the dagger…
2Sa 19:13-14 And say to Amasa, ‘Aren’t you my flesh and blood?…

He killed them in peacetime to avenge the blood of war.

Neither man was killed in battle. Joab used the occasion of peace to settle personal grievances and remove rivals, shedding innocent blood in violation of justice and David’s authority.

2Sa 3:30 Joab and Abishai murdered Abner because he had killed Asahel…
Num 35:16-21 If, however, anyone strikes a person with an iron object…
Deu 19:11-13 If, however, a man hates his neighbor and lies…

He stained with the blood of war the belt around his waist and the sandals on his feet.

Joab’s violence clung to him like blood on his clothing. Though he wore the marks of a military commander, his record was stained by murders carried out under the cover of peace.

Isa 63:2-3 Why are Your clothes red, and Your garments…
Psa 58:10 The righteous will rejoice when they see they are avenged;…
Psa 68:23 that your foot may be dipped in the blood of your foes……

So act according to your wisdom,

David charged Solomon to deal wisely with Joab, whose long service to David did not erase his murders of Abner and Amasa. Solomon needed discernment to uphold justice without acting rashly.

Pro 14:8 The wisdom of the prudent is to discern his way…
Ecc 8:5 Whoever keeps his command will come to no harm,…

and do not let his gray head go down to Sheol in peace.

Joab had escaped punishment for years, but David required that his guilt not be overlooked simply because of his age or position. His death was to come under judgment rather than as the peaceful end of an honored servant.

Gen 42:38 But Jacob replied, “My son will not go down there with you,…
2Ki 22:20 Therefore I will indeed gather you to your fathers,…
Gen 15:15 You, however, will go to your fathers in peace…

But show loving devotion to the sons of Barzillai the Gileadite,

Barzillai was a wealthy Gileadite from Rogelim, east of the Jordan, who supplied David and his followers with food and provisions when they fled from Absalom. Though advanced in age, he acted decisively at a dangerous time and remained faithful to David’s rightful rule.

2Sa 19:31-32 Now Barzillai the Gileadite had come down from Rogelim…
Ezr 2:61 And from among the priests: the descendants of Hobaiah…
Neh 7:63 And from among the priests: the descendants of Hobaiah…

and let them be among those who eat at your table,

Solomon was to honor Barzillai’s family with a permanent place of favor at the royal court. Sharing the king’s table marked fellowship, security, and royal acceptance, providing a public reward for their father’s faithful service.

2Sa 19:28 For all the house of my grandfather deserves death…
2Sa 9:7 “Do not be afraid,” said David, “for surely”…
2Sa 9:13 So Mephibosheth lived in Jerusalem, because he always ate…

because they stood by me when I fled from your brother Absalom.

During Absalom’s rebellion, David was abandoned by many and forced to leave Jerusalem. Barzillai and his household supported him when doing so could have brought retaliation from Absalom. David charged Solomon to remember that loyalty and extend kindness to Barzillai’s sons.

Keep an eye on Shimei the son of Gera,

Shimei was a Benjamite whose hostility toward David reflected lingering resentment among some supporters of Saul’s house. David knew that Shimei’s earlier conduct revealed a dangerous disposition that could again threaten the stability of the kingdom.

2Sa 19:16-17 Then Shimei son of Gera, a Benjamite from Bahurim,…

the Benjamite from Bahurim who is with you.

Bahurim was a Benjaminite village east of Jerusalem, near the route David traveled during Absalom’s rebellion. Shimei remained within Solomon’s reach, making him a potential source of unrest if his loyalty proved false.

2Sa 19:16 Then Shimei son of Gera, a Benjamite from Bahurim,…
2Sa 16:5 As King David approached Bahurim, a man from the house…
2Sa 17:18-20 But a young man did see them and told Absalom.…

He called down bitter curses against me on the day I went to Mahanaim,

When David fled across the Jordan during Absalom’s revolt, Shimei publicly cursed him, cast stones, and accused him of wrongdoing. His actions were an open insult against the Lord’s anointed king at a moment of national crisis.

2Sa 16:7-8 And as he yelled curses, Shimei said, “Get out…
2Sa 16:11-12 Then David said to Abishai and to all his servants,…
2Sa 17:24 Then David went to Mahanaim, and Absalom crossed…

but when he came down to meet me at the Jordan,

After Absalom’s defeat, Shimei hurried to meet David as the king returned to Jerusalem. He pleaded for mercy, recognizing that David had been restored to power.

2Sa 19:18-20 When Shimei son of Gera crossed the Jordan,…
2Sa 19:21-22 But Abishai son of Zeruiah said, “Shouldn’t Shimei…
2Sa 19:17 along with a thousand men of Benjamin, as well as…

I swore to him by the LORD: ‘I will never put you to the sword.’

David honored his oath and did not execute Shimei at that time. Yet he entrusted Solomon with the responsibility of judging Shimei wisely, since mercy toward him did not remove the danger posed by his continued rebellion.

1Sa 24:21-22 So now, swear to me by the LORD that you will not cut off…
Jos 9:19 All the leaders answered, “We have sworn an oath to them…

Now therefore, do not hold him guiltless,

David directs Solomon to deal justly with Joab, whose murders of Abner and Amasa had gone unpunished during David’s reign. Joab’s former service to David did not cancel his responsibility for bloodshed and treachery.

Solomon possessed the discernment needed to judge a difficult matter involving a powerful and aged military leader. David leaves the decision in Solomon’s hands rather than prescribing every detail of the judgment.

Solomon was to act according to justice, considering Joab’s crimes, his continued influence, and the peace of the kingdom. The king’s duty included removing guilt from the nation and establishing righteous order.

Joab’s old age would not shield him from judgment. David calls for execution because Joab had shed innocent blood, and his death would bring an end to the unresolved guilt attached to his actions.

David’s Reign and Death

Then David rested with his fathers

David’s death brought to a close a forty-year reign in which Israel was united, Jerusalem became the royal capital, and preparations were made for the temple. He died after charging Solomon to walk in obedience to the Lord and to govern with wisdom and justice. His burial among Israel’s kings marked the completion of his earthly rule and the continuation of the Davidic dynasty through Solomon.

2Sa 7:12 And when your days are fulfilled and you rest…
Act 13:36 For when David had served God’s purpose…
Deu 31:16 And the LORD said to Moses, “You will soon rest…

and was buried in the City of David.

David was buried in Jerusalem, the city he captured and established as Israel’s political and spiritual center. His tomb honored him as the founding king of the royal line that would endure in Judah and ultimately lead to the promised Messiah, Jesus Christ, the Son of David.

1Ki 11:43 And Solomon rested with his fathers and was buried…
1Ki 14:31 And Rehoboam rested with his fathers and was buried…
1Ki 15:8 And Abijam rested with his fathers and was buried…

The length of David’s reign over Israel was forty years—

David ruled first over Judah and then over the united tribes, bringing a measure of stability after Saul’s troubled final years and the conflict with Ish-bosheth’s house.

Hebron became David’s first capital after the men of Judah anointed him king. During this period, Saul’s son Ish-bosheth ruled the northern tribes with Abner’s support until his death opened the way for all Israel to recognize David.

After capturing Jerusalem from the Jebusites, David made it the national capital. From there he united the tribes, brought the ark to the city, and received God’s covenant promise that his royal line would endure.

2Sa 5:6-10 Now the king and his men marched to Jerusalem…
1Ch 14:1-2 Now Hiram king of Tyre sent envoys to David…

So Solomon sat on the throne of his father David,

Solomon succeeded David according to the Lord’s covenant with David, preserving the royal line God had established over Israel. His accession continued the Davidic dynasty and confirmed God’s faithfulness in transferring the kingdom to David’s son.

With rival claims removed and the nation united under Solomon’s rule, Israel entered a period of security and order. Solomon’s reign became a high point in Israel’s history, anticipating the enduring kingdom of Christ, the greater Son of David.

The Execution of Adonijah

Now Adonijah son of Haggith went to Bathsheba the mother of Solomon,

Adonijah had earlier sought David’s throne and was spared after Solomon became king. His approach to Bathsheba was politically calculated, since the king’s mother held great influence at court. Though Solomon’s reign had begun, Adonijah’s ambitions had not ended.

1Ch 3:5 and these sons were born to him in Jerusalem:…
2Sa 12:24-25 Then David comforted his wife Bathsheba, and he went to her…
1Ki 1:11-17 Then Nathan said to Bathsheba the mother of Solomon,…

and she asked, “Do you come in peace?”

Bathsheba recognized that Adonijah’s presence could bring danger or intrigue. His earlier attempt to seize the kingdom gave her reason to question his purpose.

1Sa 16:4 So Samuel did what the LORD had said and went to Bethlehem.…
2Ki 9:17-18 Now the watchman standing on the tower in Jezreel…
2Ki 9:31 And as Jehu entered the gate, she asked,…

“Yes, in peace,” he replied.

Adonijah presented himself as harmless, but his coming request would reveal a renewed effort to advance his claim through a royal marriage.

2Ki 4:26 Please run out now to meet her and ask, ‘Are you all right?…
2Sa 18:28 Then Ahimaaz called out to the king, “All is well!”…
1Sa 20:42 And Jonathan said to David, “Go in peace.…

Then he said,

Adonijah continued the private conversation with Bathsheba, Solomon’s mother. Though Solomon had been established as king, Adonijah still sought an advantage through the royal household.

1Sa 25:24 She fell at his feet and said, “My lord,…
2Sa 14:12 Then the woman said, “Please, may your servant speak…
Est 5:3 “What is it, Queen Esther?” the king inquired.…

“I have something to tell you.”

He prepared Bathsheba for a request he hoped she would carry to Solomon. By approaching her rather than the king directly, Adonijah relied on her influence as queen mother.

Act 23:18 So the centurion took him to the commander and said,…
Luk 1:19 “I am Gabriel,” replied the angel. “I stand in the presence…”…
Jhn 16:12 I still have much to tell you, but you cannot yet…

“Say it,” she answered.

Bathsheba agreed to hear him, unaware that his request would involve Abishag and carry implications for Solomon’s throne.

1Sa 3:10 Then the LORD came and stood there, calling as before,…
Job 13:22 Then call me, and I will answer, or let me speak,…
Act 10:33 So I sent for you immediately, and you were kind enough to come.…

“You know that the kingship was mine,” he said.

Adonijah, David’s fourth son, had attempted to establish himself as king during David’s final days. As the oldest remaining prominent son, he believed the throne belonged to him by customary expectations of royal succession.

1Ki 1:5-10 At that time Adonijah, David’s son by Haggith,…
1Ki 1:24-27 “My lord the king,” said Nathan, “did you say,…

“All Israel expected that I should reign,

He had gained support from influential leaders, including Joab and Abiathar, and his claim may have seemed natural to many. Yet his earlier effort failed when David publicly confirmed Solomon as his successor.

1Ki 1:20 And as for you, my lord the king, the eyes of all Israel…
2Sa 5:1-3 Then all the tribes of Israel came to David at Hebron…
1Ch 12:38 All these men of war, arrayed for battle,…

but the kingship has turned to my brother,

Solomon’s accession was not merely a political reversal but the fulfillment of David’s stated choice and God’s purpose for David’s house. Adonijah’s words reveal lingering resentment beneath an outward acceptance of Solomon’s rule.

1Ki 1:39 Zadok the priest took the horn of oil from the tabernacle.…
1Ki 1:43-45 “Not at all,” Jonathan replied. “Our lord King David…”…

for it has come to him from the LORD.

Adonijah acknowledged that Solomon’s kingship rested on the Lord’s appointment. God had promised David that Solomon would build the temple and that David’s dynasty would continue through him.

1Ch 28:5-6 And of all my sons—for the LORD has given me many sons—…
1Ch 22:9-10 But a son will be born to you who will be a man of rest.…
1Ki 3:7-9 And now, O LORD my God, You have made Your servant king…

So now I have just one request of you;

Adonijah approached Bathsheba because of her influence with Solomon. Though Solomon had been established as king, Adonijah continued to seek advantage within the royal household after his earlier attempt to seize the throne.

Est 5:3 “What is it, Queen Esther?” the king inquired.…
Est 7:2 and as they drank their wine on that second day,…
2Sa 14:12 Then the woman said, “Please, may your servant speak…

do not deny me.”

His appeal carried urgency, since his standing before Solomon remained uncertain. By asking Bathsheba to act on his behalf, Adonijah sought her favor and access to the king.

Est 7:3 If I have found favor in your sight, O king,…
Mat 7:7 Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find;…
Luk 11:9 So I tell you: Ask, and it will be given to you;…

“State your request,”

Bathsheba listened willingly, exercising the respected position she held as Solomon’s mother. She did not yet recognize the danger behind Adonijah’s intended request.

Est 5:6 And as they drank their wine, the king said to Esther,…
Mrk 10:51 “What do you want Me to do for you?” Jesus asked.…
Luk 18:41 “What do you want Me to do for you?” “Lord,” he said,…

she told him.

Her response opened the way for Adonijah to ask for Abishag, a request that Solomon would understand as a renewed claim connected to David’s throne.

Est 5:7-8 Esther replied, “This is my petition and my request:…
1Sa 1:15-16 “No, my lord,” Hannah replied. “I am a woman troubled…

Adonijah replied,

David’s fourth son had previously declared himself king before Solomon’s anointing. Though Solomon spared him after that failed attempt, Adonijah had not abandoned his ambition.

1Ki 1:5-6 At that time Adonijah, David’s son by Haggith,…
1Ki 1:50-53 But Adonijah, in fear of Solomon, got up and went…
2Sa 15:4-6 And he would add, “If only someone would appoint me judge”…

“Please speak to King Solomon,

He appealed to Bathsheba as Solomon’s mother, knowing her honored position in the royal court gave her access to the king.

2Sa 14:4-8 When the woman from Tekoa went to the king,…
1Ki 1:16-17 And Bathsheba bowed down in homage to the king,…
Est 4:8 Mordecai also gave Hathach a copy of the written decree…

since he will not turn you down.

Adonijah expected Solomon to grant a request brought through Bathsheba, perhaps hoping to conceal his own intentions behind her influence.

1Ki 10:13 King Solomon gave the queen of Sheba all she desired…
2Ch 9:12 King Solomon gave the queen of Sheba all she desired…
Est 5:6-8 And as they drank their wine, the king said to Esther,…

Let him give me Abishag the Shunammite as my wife.”

Abishag had cared for David during his final days and belonged to the former king’s household. Taking her as wife could be viewed as claiming David’s royal rights, making Adonijah’s request a renewed challenge to Solomon’s throne.

1Ki 1:3-4 Then they searched throughout Israel for a beautiful girl…
2Sa 16:21-22 Sleep with your father’s concubines, whom he has left…
2Sa 12:8 I gave your master’s house to you and your master’s wives…

“Very well,” Bathsheba replied.

As Solomon’s mother and a respected figure in the royal household, Bathsheba had access to the king and understood the sensitivity of Adonijah’s request. Her calm response did not reveal whether she recognized its political implications.

Gen 24:58 They called Rebekah and asked her, “Will you go with this man?”…
Rut 3:5 “I will do everything you say,” Ruth answered.
Est 4:16 Go and assemble all the Jews who can be found…

“I will speak to the king for you.”

Bathsheba agreed to present Adonijah’s request to Solomon, acting as an intermediary within the court. Adonijah’s desire to marry Abishag was not merely personal; possession of a former king’s concubine could be understood as a claim to royal authority. Her appeal would bring the matter directly before Solomon, whose response would expose Adonijah’s continuing ambition for the throne.

1Ki 1:15-17 So Bathsheba went to see the king in his bedroom.…
2Sa 14:4-11 When the woman from Tekoa went to the king,…
Est 7:3-4 If I have found favor in your sight, O king,…

So Bathsheba went to King Solomon to speak to him for Adonijah.

Adonijah, Solomon’s older half-brother, had previously sought the throne before David confirmed Solomon as king. His request through Bathsheba concerned Abishag the Shunammite, a matter carrying political implications because possession of a former king’s concubine could be viewed as a claim to royal authority. Bathsheba acted as an intermediary, trusting her standing with Solomon.

Est 5:1-3 On the third day, Esther put on her royal robes.…
2Sa 14:4-20 When the woman from Tekoa went to the king,…

The king stood up to greet her,

Solomon received his mother with public honor, recognizing both her place in the royal family and her role in the events that established his reign.

bowed to her,

Though he held the throne, Solomon showed proper reverence toward Bathsheba as his mother. His conduct displayed the respect due to her without weakening his authority as king.

Solomon’s throne established the formal setting of the audience and emphasized that he would hear the matter as Israel’s ruler.

1Ch 29:23 So Solomon sat on the throne of the LORD as king…

Bathsheba was given an honored place in the court, reflecting the influence often held by the king’s mother in the Davidic kingdom.

Her seat at Solomon’s right hand marked her as a person of special dignity and access. Yet Solomon’s response to Adonijah’s request would show that family ties could not override the security of the kingdom God had given him.

Joab, David’s longtime military commander, had also sided with Adonijah. Solomon saw that Adonijah’s request stood behind a potential alliance of religious and military power against the kingdom.

Abiathar had supported Adonijah’s attempt to seize the throne rather than the king God had established. Solomon spared his life because of his former service alongside David, including carrying the ark during David’s flight from Absalom, but removed him from office. Zadok, who had remained faithful to Solomon, became the leading priest.

The Execution of Joab

When the news reached Joab,

The execution of Adonijah and the removal of Abiathar showed that Solomon was firmly establishing his kingdom. Joab had reason to fear judgment for supporting Adonijah and for the bloodshed he had committed during David’s reign.

Joab had joined Adonijah’s attempt to seize the throne despite David’s public appointment of Solomon as king. His support placed him among those who had opposed God’s chosen ruler.

but not with Absalom,

Joab had remained with David during Absalom’s rebellion, though he later killed Absalom against David’s command. His loyalty was often governed by political calculation and personal power.

2Sa 18:2 He sent out the troops, a third under Joab,…
2Sa 18:14-15 But Joab declared, “I am not going to wait like this!”…
2Sa 19:5-7 Then Joab went into the house and said to the king,…

he fled to the tent of the LORD

Joab went to the sanctuary seeking protection from Solomon’s judgment.

and took hold of the horns of the altar.

Holding the altar’s horns was an appeal for mercy before God, but the sanctuary did not shield one guilty of deliberate murder and rebellion.

It was reported to King Solomon:

News of Joab’s flight quickly reached Solomon, whose new reign required decisive action against threats and unresolved bloodguilt from David’s administration.

2Sa 18:31-32 Just then the Cushite came and said, “May my lord the king…
2Sa 1:4-5 “What was the outcome?” David asked. “Please tell me.” ……
2Sa 11:18-19 Joab sent to David a full account of the battle…

“Joab has fled to the tent of the LORD

Fearing judgment after Adonijah’s execution, Joab sought protection at the tabernacle, where the ark and altar stood before the temple was built.

1Ki 1:50-51 But Adonijah, in fear of Solomon, got up and went…
Psa 61:4 Let me dwell in Your tent forever and take refuge…
Psa 27:5 For in the day of trouble He will hide me in His shelter;…

By taking hold of the altar, Joab appealed for sanctuary. Yet the altar did not protect a deliberate murderer from justice. Joab had shed innocent blood in killing Abner and Amasa.

Benaiah was Solomon’s trusted military commander, loyal to David and instrumental in securing Solomon’s throne.

1Ki 1:38 Then Zadok the priest, Nathan the prophet,…
2Sa 8:18 Benaiah son of Jehoiada was over the Cherethites…

Solomon carried out David’s charge to remove Joab and the guilt of his murders from the kingdom. Royal justice was not set aside by Joab’s attempt to use the sacred place as refuge.

2Sa 1:15 Then David summoned one of the young men and said,…
2Sa 4:12 So David commanded his young men, and they killed Rechab.…

And Benaiah entered the tent of the LORD

Benaiah came into the sanctuary where Joab had taken hold of the altar’s horns, seeking protection from Solomon’s judgment. As a place set apart for worship, the tent could not shield one guilty of deliberate bloodshed.

1Ki 1:50-51 But Adonijah, in fear of Solomon, got up and went…

Deu 19:11-13 If, however, a man hates his neighbor and lies…

and said to Joab, “The king says, ‘Come out!’”

Speaking for Solomon, Benaiah commanded Joab to leave the altar and submit to the king. Joab’s murders of Abner and Amasa had remained unresolved, and Solomon was carrying out David’s charge to remove his bloodguilt from the kingdom.

1Ki 1:53 So King Solomon summoned Adonijah down from the altar…
2Ki 11:15-16 And Jehoiada the priest ordered the commanders of hundreds…
Exo 21:14 But if a man schemes and acts willfully against his neighbor…

But Joab replied, “No, I will die here.”

Joab refused to surrender, choosing instead to remain at the altar. He knew that the sanctuary would not protect him from judgment for intentional murder, yet he faced death without yielding.

So Benaiah relayed the message to the king, saying, “This is how Joab answered me.”

Benaiah returned to Solomon with Joab’s refusal, leaving the king to pronounce the final judgment. Solomon’s response would establish justice and secure his reign from the violence and divided loyalties left from David’s final years.

and Amasa son of Jether, commander of Judah’s army.

David appointed Amasa over the army in Joab’s place after Absalom’s rebellion. Joab met him during Sheba’s revolt and murdered him while pretending friendship, securing his own command through treachery.

2Sa 17:25 Absalom had appointed Amasa over the army in place of Joab.…
2Sa 19:13 And say to Amasa, ‘Aren’t you my flesh and blood?…
2Sa 20:9-10 “Are you well, my brother?” Joab asked Amasa.…

Their blood will come back upon the heads of Joab and his descendants forever;

Joab had murdered Abner and Amasa in peacetime, shedding the blood of men who had not been condemned by lawful judgment. David placed responsibility for these crimes upon Joab and his family, calling for God’s righteous judgment to answer the violence Joab had committed.

2Sa 3:28-29 Afterward, David heard about this and said,…

Jos 2:19 If anyone goes out the door of your house into the street,…

Joab had taken hold of the altar’s horns, seeking protection, but deliberate bloodshed could not be excused by sanctuary. The sentence brought justice for crimes Joab had long escaped.

Num 35:30-31 If anyone kills a person, the murderer is to be put to death…

He was buried at his own home in the wilderness.

Joab received burial on his own property rather than public honor in Jerusalem. His end reflected the ruin brought by his violence and disloyalty.

1Sa 25:1 When Samuel died, all Israel gathered to mourn for him;…
2Ch 16:14 He was buried in the tomb that he had cut out for himself…

And the king appointed Benaiah son of Jehoiada in Joab’s place over the army,

Benaiah had proved himself among David’s mighty men and remained loyal to Solomon during Adonijah’s rebellion. His appointment removed Joab’s influence from the kingdom after Joab’s longstanding crimes and his support for Adonijah. Solomon thereby carried out David’s charge concerning Joab and placed the army under a commander whose loyalty was firmly established.

Abiathar had served David faithfully for many years but forfeited his office by supporting Adonijah’s attempt to seize the throne. Zadok had remained faithful to David and Solomon, and his appointment established the priestly leadership under Solomon’s reign. Abiathar’s removal also fulfilled the judgment pronounced against Eli’s house, from which Abiathar descended.

“The sentence is fair,”

Shimei accepted Solomon’s judgment as right. Once an enemy of David who had cursed him during Absalom’s rebellion, Shimei now recognized the authority of David’s son and the justice of the restriction placed upon him.

Mic 1:10 Do not tell it in Gath; do not weep at all.…

So Shimei saddled his donkey

Shimei, a Benjamite placed under restriction in Jerusalem by Solomon, saddled a donkey, a symbol of humility and service, and prepared to leave despite the king’s clear command. His actions showed intentional disobedience rather than an accidental crossing of the boundary.

Gen 22:3 So Abraham got up early the next morning,…
2Ki 4:24 Then she saddled the donkey and told her servant,…

and set out to Achish at Gath

Gath was a leading Philistine city ruled by Achish. By traveling there, Shimei left the area Solomon had specifically forbidden him to leave and entered foreign territory.

1Sa 27:2-3 So David set out with his six hundred men…

Phm 1:12-16 I am sending back to you him who is my very heart.…

and he brought them back from Gath.

Shimei succeeded in recovering his servants, but his return confirmed that he had violated Solomon’s command. His pursuit of personal interests became the occasion for the judgment he had been warned would follow.

When Solomon was told

that Shimei had gone from Jerusalem

Shimei had been ordered to remain in Jerusalem under penalty of death. His departure showed disregard for the oath he had sworn before the Lord and for Solomon’s authority.

to Gath

Gath was a Philistine city where Shimei had gone to recover two escaped servants. Leaving Israel’s capital for foreign territory was forbidden under the terms Solomon had given him.

1Sa 21:10-15 That day David fled from Saul and went to Achish…
1Sa 27:1-4 David, however, said to himself, “One of these days…

and had returned,

Shimei’s return did not remove his guilt. By crossing the Kidron and leaving Jerusalem, he had broken the command that had spared his life.

2Sa 19:16-18 Then Shimei son of Gera, a Benjamite from Bahurim,…
1Sa 29:9-11 I know that you are as pleasing in my sight.…

the king summoned Shimei and said to him,

Solomon, David’s son, had established his rule and was removing threats to peace in the kingdom. Shimei of Benjamin had cursed David during Absalom’s rebellion, though David spared his life. Solomon had placed him under close restriction because of his past hostility toward David’s house.

2Sa 19:18-22 When Shimei son of Gera crossed the Jordan,…
2Sa 16:10-12 But the king replied, “What have I to do with you…
1Ki 1:52 And Solomon replied, “If he is a man of character,…

“Did I not make you swear by the LORD and warn you,

Shimei had taken a solemn oath before the LORD to remain in Jerusalem. His agreement bound him not only to Solomon’s command but also before God, whose name he had invoked.

2Sa 19:23 So the king said to Shimei, “You shall not die.”…
2Ch 36:13 He also rebelled against King Nebuchadnezzar…
Ezk 33:8-9 If I say to the wicked, ‘O wicked man, you will surely die,’…

‘On the day you leave and go elsewhere, know for sure that you will die’?

Solomon’s order was unmistakable: Shimei could live under the king’s protection in Jerusalem, but leaving the city would be treated as rebellion and bring the death penalty. The restriction guarded the kingdom against renewed opposition.

Jos 2:19-20 If anyone goes out the door of your house into the street,…
Num 35:26-28 But if the manslayer ever goes outside the limits…

And you told me, ‘The sentence is fair; I will comply.’

Shimei had openly accepted the terms as just and promised obedience. By later leaving Jerusalem, he violated both his oath and the king’s command, leaving no basis to protest Solomon’s judgment.

2Sa 15:26 But if He should say, ‘I do not delight in you,’…
1Sa 3:18 So Samuel told him everything and did not hide…
Lam 1:18 The LORD is righteous, yet I rebelled against His command.…

So why have you not kept your oath to the LORD

Shimei had pledged before the LORD to remain in Jerusalem, accepting death as the consequence of leaving. His departure to Gath to recover his servants showed disregard for both his sworn word and the God before whom it was made.

Deu 23:21-23 If you make a vow to the LORD your God, do not be slow…
Num 30:2 If a man makes a vow to the LORD or swears an oath…
Ecc 5:4-5 When you make a vow to God, do not delay in fulfilling it,…

and the command that I gave you?”

Solomon had clearly warned Shimei that leaving Jerusalem would bring judgment. By violating that command, Shimei proved untrustworthy and confirmed the danger David had recognized in him.

1Sa 13:13 “You have acted foolishly,” Samuel declared.…
Jos 1:18 Anyone who rebels against your order and does not obey…
Deu 17:19-20 It is to remain with him, and he is to read from it…

The king also said,

Solomon spoke directly to Shimei as he completed the judgment begun under David’s instruction.

Deu 32:35 Vengeance is Mine; I will repay. In due time…
2Sa 3:39 And I am weak this day, though anointed as king,…

“You know in your heart

Shimei could not deny his guilt or claim ignorance of what he had done.

Ecc 7:22 For you know in your heart that many times…
Gen 42:21 Then they said to one another, “Surely we are being punished…
Psa 44:21 would not God have discovered, since He knows…

all the evil that you did to my father David.

During Absalom’s rebellion, Shimei publicly cursed David and treated the Lord’s anointed king with contempt. David spared him at the time, but his offense remained unresolved.

2Sa 16:5-8 As King David approached Bahurim, a man from the house…
2Sa 19:18-20 When Shimei son of Gera crossed the Jordan,…

Therefore the LORD will bring your evil back upon your head.

Solomon declared that Shimei’s death was the just consequence of his own actions and that the Lord’s judgment had fallen upon him.

Ezk 9:10 But as for Me, I will not look on them with pity,…
Oba 1:15 For the Day of the LORD is near for all the nations.…
Psa 7:16 His trouble recoils on himself, and his violence falls…

But King Solomon will be blessed

Solomon’s accession followed Adonijah’s failed attempt to seize the throne. By removing the threat to the kingdom, Solomon’s reign was established under God’s providence. He would receive wisdom, wealth, honor, and the responsibility of building the temple in Jerusalem.

1Ch 29:25 The LORD highly exalted Solomon in the sight of all Israel…
1Ki 3:13 Moreover, I will give you what you did not request…
2Ch 1:12 Therefore wisdom and knowledge have been granted to you.…

and David’s throne will remain secure

David’s dynasty had been promised an enduring place over Israel. Solomon’s secure rule demonstrated God’s faithfulness to that covenant, even as later kings would be judged for their own obedience or rebellion.

1Ch 17:14 But I will set him over My house and My kingdom forever…
Psa 89:4 “I will establish your offspring forever…”…
Psa 132:11-12 The LORD swore an oath to David, a promise…

before the LORD forever.”

The permanence of David’s throne rested on God’s covenant purpose rather than human strength. The line of David ultimately finds its everlasting King in Jesus Christ, whose reign will never end.

2Sa 7:16 Your house and kingdom will endure forever…
Psa 89:36-37 his offspring shall endure forever, and his throne before Me…
1Ki 11:36 I will give one tribe to his son, so that My servant David…

Then the king commanded Benaiah son of Jehoiada,

Benaiah was one of David’s mighty men and a proven loyal servant of the royal house. Solomon entrusted him with enforcing the judgments necessary to remove remaining threats to the throne.

1Ki 1:32-35 Then King David said, “Call in for me Zadok the priest,…
2Sa 8:18 Benaiah son of Jehoiada was over the Cherethites…
2Sa 23:20-23 And Benaiah son of Jehoiada was a man of valor…

and he went out and struck Shimei down, and he died.

Shimei had cursed David during Absalom’s revolt but was spared after David returned to Jerusalem. Solomon allowed him to live under the condition that he remain in Jerusalem. When Shimei knowingly violated that command, he brought judgment upon himself.

2Sa 16:5-14 As King David approached Bahurim, a man from the house…
2Sa 19:16-23 Then Shimei son of Gera, a Benjamite from Bahurim,…
Psa 101:8 Every morning I will remove all the wicked of the land…

Thus the kingdom was firmly established in the hand of Solomon.

With the removal of those who had opposed David’s appointed succession, Solomon’s rule was secured. God’s promise that David’s son would reign after him was being fulfilled as Solomon established order throughout the kingdom.

1Ki 1:46-48 Moreover, Solomon has taken his seat on the royal throne.…
1Ch 29:23-25 So Solomon sat on the throne of the LORD as king…
2Ch 1:1 Now Solomon son of David established himself…
