The Altar of Incense

“You are also to make an altar of acacia wood

Acacia wood was durable and readily available in the Sinai region. Its use in the Tabernacle furnishings, including the Ark and other sacred items, provided a strong and lasting material for objects set apart for Israel’s worship. The altar stood as a permanent provision for approaching God according to His command.

On this altar

The Altar of Incense stood in the Holy Place before the veil leading into the Most Holy Place. Unlike the bronze altar in the courtyard, it was reserved for the daily burning of the sacred incense, representing Israel’s prayers and intercession before God.

Only the incense God prescribed could be burned there. Nadab and Abihu’s judgment for bringing unauthorized fire showed that worship could not be altered according to human preference. The holy incense mixture was set apart exclusively for the Lord’s service.

Burnt offerings belonged on the Altar of Burnt Offering in the courtyard, where sacrifices were made for atonement and wholehearted dedication to God. The incense altar was not a place for animal sacrifice.

Exo 29:18 Then burn the entire ram on the altar; it is a burnt offering…

or grain offering;

Grain offerings of flour, oil, and frankincense were likewise presented at the bronze altar. Their exclusion from the Altar of Incense preserved the distinct purpose God assigned to each part of the Tabernacle service.

Lev 2:1-3 “When anyone brings a grain offering to the LORD,…
Lev 6:14-18 Now this is the law of the grain offering:…

nor are you to pour a drink offering on it.

Drink offerings, poured out with other sacrifices, were not permitted on the Altar of Incense. Its use was limited to the sacred incense, according to God’s stated order for approaching Him.

Exo 29:38-42 This is what you are to offer regularly on the altar…
Num 15:4-10 then the one presenting his offering to the LORD…

Once a year Aaron shall make atonement on the horns of the altar.

On the Day of Atonement, Aaron applied the blood of the sin offering to the horns of the altar of incense. The blood marked the need for cleansing before a holy God and showed that Israel’s sin affected even its worship. This annual rite anticipated Christ’s once-for-all sacrifice for sin.

Lev 16:18-19 Then he shall go out to the altar that is before the LORD…
Lev 16:34 This is to be a permanent statute for you,…

Throughout your generations he shall make atonement on it annually with the blood of the sin offering of atonement.

Aaron’s successors were to continue this observance in every generation. The required blood sacrifice demonstrated that forgiveness and cleansing from sin required the shedding of blood until the final atonement accomplished by Christ.

Lev 16:15-17 Aaron shall then slaughter the goat for the sin offering…
Lev 17:11 For the life of the flesh is in the blood…

The altar is most holy to the LORD.”

The altar belonged exclusively to the LORD and was set apart for service in His presence. Its holiness emphasized God’s purity and the necessity of atonement for those who approached Him.

The Census Offering

Then the LORD

God Himself gave the command, establishing its authority and place within the covenant instructions delivered at Sinai. The directions that follow concern Israel’s worship, accountability, and provision for the service of the tabernacle.

Exo 8:1 Then the LORD said to Moses, “Go to Pharaoh…
Exo 14:1 Then the LORD said to Moses,

Moses received God’s commands as Israel’s appointed leader and mediator. He was responsible to communicate them faithfully to the people and oversee their obedience as the nation was formed around the covenant.

Exo 6:10 So the LORD said to Moses,
Exo 11:1 Then the LORD said to Moses, “I will bring upon Pharaoh…”…
Lev 23:1 Then the LORD said to Moses,

“When you take a census of the Israelites to number them,

A census placed the men of Israel under an official count, especially for national and military purposes. Because the people belonged to the LORD, numbering them required His command and acknowledgment of His authority.

Num 1:2-3 “Take a census of the whole congregation of Israel…
Num 26:1-2 After the plague had ended, the LORD said to Moses…
Exo 38:25-28 The silver from those numbered among the congregation…

each man must pay the LORD a ransom for his life when he is counted.

The ransom recognized that every life belonged to God and required atonement before Him. The same amount was required from rich and poor alike, showing that all stood on equal ground before the LORD. It also pointed forward to the perfect ransom Christ would provide for His people.

Exo 21:30 If payment is demanded of him instead, he may…
Psa 49:7-8 No man can possibly redeem his brother or pay his ransom…

Then no plague will come upon them when they are numbered.

The payment protected the nation from judgment connected with treating the census as a matter of human power rather than divine ownership. Israel’s safety depended on obeying the LORD’s instructions and approaching Him through the atonement He required.

The Bronze Basin

And the LORD said to Moses,

God continued to give Moses detailed instructions for the tabernacle and its service. As Israel’s appointed leader, Moses received these commands directly and delivered them faithfully to the people. The LORD’s covenant relationship with Israel governed every part of their worship, including the preparation of the priests who would minister before Him.

Exo 25:1 Then the LORD said to Moses,
Exo 31:1 Then the LORD said to Moses,
Lev 1:1 Then the LORD called to Moses and spoke to him…

“You are to make a bronze basin with a bronze stand for washing.

The basin, or laver, was made of bronze and provided a designated place for priestly washing. Its durable construction suited continual use in the courtyard. Before serving at the altar or entering the Tent of Meeting, Aaron and his sons were required to wash, marking the difference between ordinary activity and holy service.

Exo 38:8 Next he made the bronze basin and its stand…
1Ki 7:38-39 He also made ten bronze basins, each holding forty baths…
2Ch 4:6 He also made ten basins for washing and placed five…

Set it between the Tent of Meeting and the altar,

Its location placed it on the path from the altar of sacrifice to the sanctuary. Sacrifice addressed sin before God, while washing prepared the priests for their continuing ministry in His presence. The arrangement taught that those who served before the LORD were not to treat His holiness casually.

Water was kept in the basin for washing the priests’ hands and feet. Though Israel traveled through a dry wilderness where water was valuable, it was reserved for this required cleansing. The basin visibly represented the purity God required of those appointed to approach Him in service.
