Next, Moses took some of the anointing oil and some of the blood that was on the altar
In the context of Leviticus, the anointing oil represents the Holy Spirit's presence and sanctification. The use of oil in anointing signifies setting apart for a holy purpose, as seen in the anointing of kings and priests throughout the Old Testament. The blood on the altar symbolizes atonement and purification, essential for approaching God. The combination of oil and blood highlights the dual necessity of spiritual empowerment and cleansing from sin for service to God.

and sprinkled them on Aaron and his garments,
Sprinkling the mixture on Aaron and his garments signifies the consecration of the high priest. Aaron, as the first high priest, serves as a type of Christ, our ultimate High Priest, who is both anointed by the Spirit and offers His own blood for atonement. The garments represent the righteousness and holiness required for those who serve in God's presence, pointing to the righteousness of Christ imputed to believers.

and on his sons and their garments.
Aaron's sons, the priests, also receive the anointing and blood, indicating their role in the priestly ministry. This act underscores the importance of generational continuity in spiritual leadership and service. It also foreshadows the priesthood of all believers, as seen in 1 Peter 2:9, where Christians are called a royal priesthood, set apart to serve God.

So he consecrated Aaron and his garments,
The consecration of Aaron and his garments signifies a complete dedication to God's service. This act of consecration is a public declaration of Aaron's role as mediator between God and the people, prefiguring Christ's mediatory work. The garments, detailed in Exodus 28, symbolize the beauty and glory of holiness required for those who approach God.

as well as Aaron’s sons and their garments.
The consecration of Aaron's sons and their garments emphasizes the collective responsibility of the priesthood. It highlights the importance of purity and dedication in those who serve God, a principle applicable to all believers. This consecration process points to the sanctifying work of Christ, who cleanses and prepares His people for service, as seen in Ephesians 5:25-27.

What Does Leviticus 8:30 Mean
Next, Moses took some of the anointing oil

The anointing oil, prepared according to Exodus 30:22-33, signified the Holy Spirit’s sanctifying presence (Isaiah 61:1; Acts 10:38). Moses, acting exactly as God commanded (Leviticus 8:2, 12), shows that consecration begins with the Spirit’s work, not human effort.

• By starting with oil, God teaches that ministry must be empowered by His Spirit (Zechariah 4:6).

• This moment echoes the earlier anointing of the tabernacle and its furnishings (Leviticus 8:10-11), reminding us that both place and people belong wholly to the Lord.

and some of the blood that was on the altar

Blood from the ram of ordination (Leviticus 8:22-24) represents atonement and cleansing (Leviticus 17:11; Hebrews 9:22). It is taken from the altar—already accepted by God—underscoring that forgiveness precedes service.

• Spirit (oil) and atoning blood together picture the full provision of God for His priests (Hebrews 10:19-22).

• For believers today, these point to Christ, “who loves us and has released us from our sins by His blood” (Revelation 1:5-6).

and sprinkled them on Aaron and his garments

Sprinkling covers both the man and what he wears, teaching that the priest’s person and his public role are equally set apart (Psalm 132:9).

• Nothing about Aaron was left untouched; ministry demands complete purity (1 Timothy 3:2).

Hebrews 9:13-14 shows this old-covenant pattern fulfilled when the blood of Christ cleanses “our conscience from dead works to serve the living God.”

and on his sons and their garments

Consecration extends to Aaron’s descendants, ensuring continuity of holy service (Numbers 18:7).

• The same oil and blood bind the whole priestly family together under one standard of holiness (2 Chronicles 29:11).

• Believers, now called “a royal priesthood” (1 Peter 2:9), share one salvation and one Spirit (Ephesians 4:4-6).

So he consecrated Aaron and his garments, as well as Aaron’s sons and their garments

“Consecrated” means set apart exclusively for God’s use (Exodus 28:41). The verse climaxes with a fourfold repetition—Aaron, his garments, his sons, their garments—to stress total devotion.

• Service to God flows from a life wholly dedicated to Him (Romans 12:1).

• This ordination foreshadows the once-for-all consecration accomplished by Jesus, who “by one sacrifice has made perfect forever those who are being sanctified” (Hebrews 10:14).

summary

Leviticus 8:30 shows Moses combining anointing oil and sacrificial blood to consecrate Aaron and his sons. The Spirit’s empowering (oil) and the atoning work (blood) together render God’s priests completely holy—person, clothing, and future ministry. This ceremony points ahead to Christ, whose blood cleanses and whose Spirit indwells all who are called to serve Him, establishing a people set apart for His glory.

(30) And of the blood which was upon the altar.--That is, some of the blood of the ram of consecration, which was probably kept in the bowl, and placed upon the altar for this purpose. Whether the anointing oil and the blood were sprinkled separately, or whether they were mixed together, cannot possibly be gathered either from this passage, or from Exodus 29:21, which gives the order. As the sacred garments were the badge of office, they received the same cleansing and sanctification as the priests themselves. Hence the remark of the apostle, "almost all things were by the law purged with blood" (Hebrews 9:22).

Verse 30. - The sprinkling with oil and blood completes the ceremony of anointing, and suffices of itself for the sons of Aaron, in addition to their virtual participation in the anointing of their father (verse 12). "In the mingling of the blood and oil for the anointing seems to be taught that not sacrifice for sin alone suffices; but that with this must be joined the unction of the Holy Spirit" (Gardiner).
