Berean Study Bible David’s Righteous BranchGod condemns Israel’s kings, priests, and other rulers who were entrusted with the welfare of His people. Ezk 34:2 Son of man, prophesy against the shepherds of Israel… who destroy and scatter Their rebellion, injustice, and false worship harmed the nation and helped bring about Jerusalem’s fall and the exile of Judah. Ezk 34:5-6 They were scattered for lack of a shepherd,… the sheep of My pasture!” Israel belonged to the LORD, who had provided for and protected them. Their leaders had neglected the people placed in their care. Ezk 34:31 “You are My flock, the sheep of My pasture,”… declares the LORD. The judgment comes from God Himself and cannot be dismissed as merely Jeremiah’s opinion. Zec 11:6 For I will no longer have compassion on the people… Therefore this is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says about the shepherds who tend My people: The LORD speaks as Israel’s covenant God and addresses those entrusted with the nation’s spiritual and civil care. Israel’s kings, priests, and prophets were responsible to lead the people in faithfulness to God, administer justice, and guard them from corruption. Instead, many used their authority for personal gain and failed to provide the guidance and protection God required. Ezk 34:2 Son of man, prophesy against the shepherds of Israel… “You have scattered My flock and driven them away, and have not attended to them. Their unfaithfulness contributed to Judah’s ruin. By permitting idolatry, injustice, and false worship, the leaders led the people away from the LORD and left them exposed to judgment. The scattering included the coming exile, when the people would be removed from their land, but it also reflected their spiritual abandonment and neglect under wicked leadership. Ezk 34:5-6 They were scattered for lack of a shepherd,… Behold, I will attend to you for the evil of your deeds, declares the LORD. Those who failed to care for God’s people would themselves face His judgment. The LORD had seen their abuse of authority and would hold them personally accountable for the harm they had done. Their position did not protect them from punishment; the God who appointed them as shepherds would judge them for betraying that trust. Jer 21:14 I will punish you as your deeds deserve, declares the LORD.… Then I Myself will gather the remnant of My flock God promises to personally restore the faithful survivors of Israel after judgment. Though many had fallen into idolatry and rebellion, He would preserve a remnant belonging to Him, like sheep under the care of their shepherd. Ezk 34:11-12 For this is what the Lord GOD says: ‘Behold, I Myself… from all the lands to which I have banished them, The scattering of Judah among foreign nations came through God’s judgment, culminating in the Babylonian exile. Yet the same God who sent them away retained authority over every land and would bring His people back according to His covenant. Deu 30:3-4 He will restore you from captivity and have compassion… and I will return them to their pasture, Their return to the land would restore security, provision, and ordered life under God’s care. The promise also points to renewed fellowship with Him after the devastation caused by sin and corrupt leadership. Ezk 34:14-15 I will feed them in good pasture, and the lofty mountains… where they will be fruitful and multiply. God would rebuild the nation rather than allow it to disappear in exile. Population, stability, and blessing would return as evidence that His purposes for Israel had not failed. Lev 26:9 I will turn toward you and make you fruitful… I will raise up shepherds over them God promises to replace Judah’s corrupt rulers with leaders who will govern His restored people faithfully. Scripture often portrays kings and spiritual leaders as shepherds because they are responsible to guide, protect, and provide for those under their care. Jer 3:15 Then I will give you shepherds after My own heart… who will tend them, Unlike the leaders condemned earlier for scattering the flock, these shepherds will exercise the care and oversight God requires. Their leadership will bring order, protection, and faithful direction to the people. Isa 40:11 He tends His flock like a shepherd; He gathers the lambs… and they will no longer be afraid or dismayed, The terror and confusion produced by invasion, exile, and unfaithful leadership will give way to security. God’s restoration includes relief from the instability that had marked Judah’s judgment. Deu 31:8 The LORD Himself goes before you; He will be with you.… nor will any go missing, The scattered remnant will be gathered and preserved. God will not abandon His people to exile or loss but will restore them under leaders appointed by Him. Ezk 34:16 I will seek the lost, bring back the strays… declares the LORD. The promise rests on the authority and faithfulness of God Himself, who will accomplish what He has announced. Num 23:19 God is not a man, that He should lie, or a son of man,… Behold, the days are coming, declares the LORD, Jeremiah announces a future act of God with the certainty of divine authority. Though Judah faced judgment for the failures of its kings and leaders, the LORD had not abandoned His covenant purposes. Amo 9:11 “In that day I will restore the fallen tent of David.”… when I will raise up for David a righteous Branch, God would provide a legitimate descendant of David to fulfill the promise of an enduring royal line. Unlike Judah’s corrupt rulers, this King would be morally perfect and fully faithful to God. Jesus Christ fulfills this promise as the Son of David and the promised Messiah. 2Sa 7:12-13 And when your days are fulfilled and you rest… and He will reign wisely as King The coming King will rule with perfect wisdom, not with the self-interest, idolatry, and injustice that marked many of Judah’s kings. His authority will bring God’s purposes for Israel to completion. Pro 8:15-16 By me kings reign, and rulers enact just laws;… and will administer justice and righteousness in the land. His reign will establish true justice and righteous order among God’s people. What Judah’s rulers had failed to provide will be secured under the Messiah’s righteous kingship. Psa 72:1-4 Endow the king with Your justice, O God,… In His days In His days, the promised Son of David will reign as the righteous King, fulfilling God’s covenant promises to His people. Psa 72:7 May the righteous flourish in his days… Judah will be saved, Judah will be delivered from oppression and restored under the protection of the Messiah. Zec 10:6 I will strengthen the house of Judah and save… and Israel will dwell securely. The divided nation will live in peace, free from fear and hostile domination. Ezk 34:28 They will no longer be prey for the nations… And this is His name by which He will be called: The LORD Our Righteousness. The King Himself is the source of His people’s righteousness, providing the righteous standing they could not establish for themselves. Jer 33:16 In those days Judah will be saved, and Jerusalem will dwell… So behold, the days are coming, declares the LORD, God announces a future work that will certainly take place. Jeremiah speaks with the authority of the Lord, not as one offering his own prediction. Jer 31:31 Behold, the days are coming, declares the LORD,… when they will no longer say, Israel’s greatest confession of God’s saving power would no longer center chiefly on the Exodus. A new deliverance would become the defining evidence of His faithfulness to His covenant people. Jer 3:16 “In those days, when you multiply and increase in the land,”… ‘As surely as the LORD lives, who brought the Israelites up out of the land of Egypt.’ The Exodus had marked Israel’s identity from the time God redeemed them from Egyptian slavery and formed them as His nation. Yet the deliverance foretold in the following verse—the regathering of Israel from the lands of exile—would be so great that it would stand alongside and surpass the Exodus in their remembrance. Jer 16:14-15 Yet behold, the days are coming, declares the LORD,… Instead they will say, Israel’s future deliverance will become so great that it eclipses the exodus from Egypt as the defining example of God’s saving power. Jer 16:14-15 Yet behold, the days are coming, declares the LORD,… ‘As surely as the LORD lives, The living God will again demonstrate His faithfulness by acting decisively for His covenant people. Jer 4:2 ‘As surely as the LORD lives,’ in truth, in justice,… who brought and led the descendants of the house of Israel up out of the land of the north The land of the north refers chiefly to Babylon, where Judah was carried into exile. God would bring the scattered descendants of Israel home as He had once brought their ancestors out of Egypt. Jer 31:8-10 Behold, I will bring them from the land of the north… and all the other lands to which He had banished them.’ The restoration would include those dispersed among many nations, showing that exile had not canceled God’s purpose for Israel. Deu 30:3-5 He will restore you from captivity and have compassion… Then they will dwell once more in their own land.” God promised a real return to the land He gave Israel, accompanied by renewed covenant blessing and pointing ahead to the full restoration under the Messiah. Jer 32:37-38 I will surely gather My people from all the lands…
Lying ProphetsJeremiah turns to address the prophets who had corrupted their calling by claiming divine authority while speaking lies and reassuring a rebellious nation. Deu 18:20-22 But if any prophet dares to speak a message in My name… My heart is broken within me, The widespread deception grieves Jeremiah deeply. He feels the weight of Judah’s coming judgment and the damage caused by those who misrepresent the Lord. Lam 1:20 See, O LORD, how distressed I am! I am churning within… and all my bones tremble. His anguish is so severe that it affects his whole body. The certainty of God’s judgment and the nation’s refusal to hear the truth leave him shaken. Job 4:14-15 fear and trembling came over me and made all my bones… I have become like a drunkard, like a man overcome by wine, Jeremiah is overwhelmed and disoriented by the dreadful reality revealed to him. Unlike the false prophets, who speak carelessly and confidently, he cannot treat God’s message lightly. Isa 28:7-8 These also stagger from wine and stumble… because of the LORD, because of His holy words. The Lord’s holy and truthful words expose the prophets’ lies and reveal the judgment awaiting Judah. Jeremiah’s distress reflects the burden of faithfully receiving and declaring God’s message. Psa 12:6-7 The words of the LORD are flawless, like silver… For the land is full of adulterers— Judah’s widespread sexual sin reflected a deeper breach of covenant with God. The people had also turned to idols, abandoning the Lord for false worship. Hos 7:4 They are all adulterers, like an oven heated by a baker… because of the curse, the land mourns Covenant rebellion brought God’s judgment upon the nation. Drought, famine, and desolation showed that Judah’s sin affected the whole land entrusted to them. Hos 4:3 Therefore the land mourns, and all who dwell in it… and the pastures of the wilderness have dried up— Even grazing lands failed, leaving flocks and herds without sustenance. The physical barrenness mirrored the nation’s spiritual condition. Jol 1:18-20 How the cattle groan! The herds wander in confusion… their course is evil The people had set themselves on a settled path of wrongdoing, rejecting God’s commands and pursuing wickedness. Pro 1:16 For their feet run to evil, and they are swift… and their power is misused. Those entrusted with authority used it for corruption and oppression rather than justice, contributing to Judah’s ruin. Ezk 22:6-7 See how every prince of Israel within you has used his power… “For both prophet and priest are ungodly; Judah’s religious leaders had abandoned their duty to teach God’s law and lead the people in faithful worship. Their corruption helped spread spiritual rebellion throughout the nation. Jer 5:31 The prophets prophesy falsely, and the priests rule… even in My house I have found their wickedness,” Wickedness had reached the temple in Jerusalem, the house that was the center of Jewish worship and the dwelling place of God’s presence among His people. Its defilement revealed how deeply Judah had rejected God and anticipated the judgment that would fall on the city. Jer 7:11 Has this house, which bears My Name, become a den… declares the LORD. The charge comes from God Himself, who sees the sin of both leaders and people and will hold them accountable. Ezk 24:14 I, the LORD, have spoken; the time is coming… “Therefore their path will become slick; The false prophets would lose all security and stability. Having led Judah away from the Lord, they would face a course marked by danger and inevitable collapse. Psa 73:18 Surely You set them on slick ground; … they will be driven away into the darkness and fall into it. God would remove them from safety and expose them to judgment. The darkness points to the distress, confusion, and ruin that would accompany Judah’s coming exile. Pro 4:19 But the way of the wicked is like the darkest gloom;… For I will bring disaster upon them The calamity was not accidental or merely political; it was the Lord’s judgment on leaders who spoke lies in His name and strengthened the wicked. Jer 18:11 Now therefore, tell the men of Judah and the residents… in the year of their punishment,” God had appointed a definite time when their guilt would be answered. The Babylonian invasion and exile would bring that judgment upon Judah and its deceiving prophets. Isa 34:8 For the LORD has a day of vengeance, a year of recompense… declares the LORD. The certainty of the warning rests on the authority of the Lord Himself. Jer 1:12 “You have observed correctly,” said the LORD,… “Among the prophets of Samaria Samaria, founded by King Omri, became the capital of the Northern Kingdom. Its rulers repeatedly promoted pagan worship, especially under Ahab and Jezebel, and many religious leaders abandoned the worship of the Lord. 1Ki 22:6-12 So the king of Israel assembled the prophets… I saw an offensive thing: God regarded their idolatry and false ministry as an abomination because they broke Israel’s covenant with Him and corrupted the worship He had commanded. Hos 6:10 In the house of Israel I have seen a horrible thing:… They prophesied by Baal Rather than speaking in the name of the Lord, these prophets served Baal, the Canaanite god associated with rain, storms, and fertility. Their influence supported the pagan practices embraced by Israel’s royal court. Jer 2:8 The priests did not ask, ‘Where is the LORD?’… and led My people Israel astray. Those appointed to direct the nation toward God instead drew the people into idolatry, contributing to the Northern Kingdom’s spiritual ruin. Deu 13:1-5 If a prophet or dreamer of dreams arises among you… And among the prophets of Jerusalem I have seen a horrible thing: Jerusalem’s prophets held positions of religious influence near the temple, yet their conduct openly contradicted the God they claimed to represent. Their corruption was especially grievous because they were charged with directing the nation in faithfulness. Jer 5:30-31 A horrible and shocking thing has happened in the land.… They commit adultery and walk in lies. Their lives were marked by sexual sin, deceit, and false prophecy. Rather than speaking God’s truth, they promoted messages that concealed judgment and excused rebellion. Hos 4:2 Cursing and lying, murder and stealing, and adultery… They strengthen the hands of evildoers, Their teaching gave sinners confidence to continue in evil. By refusing to confront wrongdoing, they supported the very conduct that was bringing judgment upon Judah. Ezk 13:22 Because you have disheartened the righteous with your lies… so that no one turns his back on wickedness. The people were not led to repent because their spiritual leaders assured them that all was well. The prophets’ deception helped preserve the nation’s rebellion. Ezk 18:30-32 Therefore, O house of Israel, I will judge you… They are all like Sodom to Me; God compares Jerusalem’s prophets to Sodom because of their moral corruption and hardened defiance. The comparison signals that judgment is deserved. Isa 1:9-10 Unless the LORD of Hosts had left us a few survivors,… the people of Jerusalem are like Gomorrah.” The corruption had spread beyond the prophets throughout Jerusalem. Like Gomorrah, the city had become marked by persistent sin and stood under God’s righteous judgment. Gen 19:24-25 Then the LORD rained down sulfur and fire… Therefore this is what the LORD of Hosts says concerning the prophets: God speaks with sovereign authority against Jerusalem’s prophets, who had claimed to represent Him while leading the people away from truth. Deu 18:20-22 But if any prophet dares to speak a message in My name… “I will feed them wormwood and give them poisoned water to drink, Their judgment would match the bitterness and ruin their ministry had brought upon Judah. What they had spread among the people would return upon them under God’s sentence. Jer 9:15 Therefore this is what the LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel,… for from the prophets of Jerusalem ungodliness has spread throughout the land.” Rather than restraining sin, these religious leaders had encouraged it through false assurances and corrupt living. Their influence helped deepen Judah’s rebellion in the years before Babylon’s invasion and exile. Jer 5:30-31 A horrible and shocking thing has happened in the land.… This is what the LORD of Hosts says: God speaks as the sovereign ruler over heaven and earth, whose authority stands above Judah’s leaders and prophets. 1Sa 15:2 This is what the LORD of Hosts says: ‘I witnessed… “Do not listen to the words of the prophets who prophesy to you. Jeremiah warned the people not to accept the claims of prophets who contradicted God’s revealed message of coming judgment. Deu 13:3 you must not listen to the words of that prophet or dreamer.… They are filling you with false hopes. Their promises of peace and safety encouraged Judah to ignore its sin and reject the need for repentance. Jer 8:11 They dress the wound of the daughter of My people… They speak visions from their own minds, Rather than receiving revelation from God, these men invented messages that matched popular desires and political expectations. Ezk 13:3 This is what the Lord GOD says: Woe to the foolish prophets… not from the mouth of the LORD. Their words carried no divine authority. God’s true message, delivered through Jeremiah, exposed their deception and announced judgment against an unrepentant nation. Jer 14:14 “The prophets are prophesying lies in My name,”… They keep saying to those who despise Me, Jeremiah exposed prophets who offered reassurance to people openly rejecting the Lord through idolatry, injustice, and disregard for His covenant. 1Sa 2:30 Therefore, the LORD, the God of Israel, declares:… ‘The LORD says that you will have peace,’ They falsely claimed God’s authority while proclaiming safety, though the Lord had announced judgment against Judah for persistent sin. Jer 14:13 “Ah, Lord GOD!” I replied, “Look, the prophets…”… and to everyone who walks in the stubbornness of his own heart, The people followed their own desires and refused the warnings God gave through Jeremiah. Deu 29:19 because when such a person hears the words… ‘No harm will come to you.’ Their promises encouraged complacency, but Babylon’s invasion and exile proved that God’s judgment would come as He had declared. Jer 5:12 They have lied about the LORD and said: “He will not… But which of them has stood in the council of the LORD False prophets claimed divine authority, yet they had not stood before God or received His decree. The council of the LORD depicts His heavenly court, from which He governs and reveals His purposes to His true servants. Jeremiah’s message came from God’s judgment against Judah, not from popular opinion or human invention. 1Ki 22:19 Micaiah continued, “Therefore hear the word of the LORD:… to see and hear His word? Those sent by God receive and understand His message so they may proclaim it faithfully. The false prophets had no such revelation, though they spoke confidently of peace and security. Deu 5:24 “Behold, the LORD our God has shown us His glory”… Who has given heed to His word and obeyed it? Genuine service to God requires both receiving His word and submitting to it. Judah’s leaders and people had rejected the Lord’s commands, while the true prophet was bound to deliver God’s warning without alteration. Jas 1:22 Be doers of the word, and not hearers only.… Behold, the storm of the LORD God’s judgment is pictured as a violent storm breaking forth from His presence. Jeremiah warns that the Lord will not overlook the rebellion, corruption, and false worship that had marked Judah’s leaders and people. Jer 30:23 Behold, the storm of the LORD has gone out with fury… has gone out with fury, His anger is holy and measured, directed against persistent covenant rebellion rather than impulsive rage. The coming disaster would reveal that God remains faithful to His word and just in His judgments. Ezk 13:13 Therefore this is what the Lord GOD says:… a whirlwind swirling down The image conveys sudden, destructive force that none can restrain or escape. The judgment approaching Judah would overturn the false security promoted by deceptive prophets and corrupt rulers. Pro 1:27 when your dread comes like a storm, and your destruction… upon the heads of the wicked. Those who had rejected the Lord and led others into sin would bear personal responsibility for their actions. God’s judgment would fall directly upon the guilty, especially those who claimed to speak for Him while strengthening the hands of evildoers. Ezk 9:10 But as for Me, I will not look on them with pity,… The anger of the LORD will not turn back God’s judgment against Judah’s false prophets, corrupt leaders, and persistent rebellion was certain. Their assurances of peace contradicted the warning God had given through Jeremiah, but the coming calamity would prove that the Lord’s wrath was neither empty nor reversible. Jer 4:8 So put on sackcloth, mourn and wail, for the fierce anger… until He has fully accomplished the purposes of His heart. The Babylonian invasion, Jerusalem’s fall, and the exile would carry out God’s declared judgment. His purposes included exposing false religion, disciplining His covenant people, and preserving a remnant for future restoration. Psa 33:11 The counsel of the LORD stands forever, … In the days to come you will understand this clearly. After judgment came, Judah would recognize that God had spoken truthfully through Jeremiah. What seemed delayed or unlikely would become unmistakable when His warnings were fulfilled. Jer 30:24 The fierce anger of the LORD will not turn back… I did not send these prophets, God had not commissioned the men who claimed to speak in His name. In Jeremiah’s day, false prophets assured Judah of peace and safety while rejecting God’s warnings of coming judgment. Jer 14:14 “The prophets are prophesying lies in My name,”… yet they have run with their message; They eagerly proclaimed their own visions and desires as though they carried God’s authority. Their confidence and activity did not prove that their message was true. Jud 1:11 Woe to them! They have traveled the path of Cain;… I did not speak to them, Genuine prophecy came from God’s direct revelation. These men had received no word from Him and therefore had no authority to guide the people. Jer 14:15 Therefore this is what the LORD says about the prophets…… yet they have prophesied. By speaking falsely in the Lord’s name, they deceived Judah and opposed God’s declared purpose. Their promises of security encouraged the nation to remain in sin rather than repent before judgment came. Deu 18:22 When a prophet speaks in the name of the LORD… But if they had stood in My council, God’s true prophets received their message from Him and spoke under His authority. The false prophets of Jeremiah’s day claimed divine insight but had not been sent by the Lord or admitted to His counsel. 1Ki 22:19-22 Micaiah continued, “Therefore hear the word of the LORD:… they would have proclaimed My words to My people Those who genuinely represented God would have delivered His message faithfully rather than inventing assurances of peace. Their task was to speak what God commanded, even when it exposed sin and warned of judgment. Jer 1:9 Then the LORD reached out His hand, touched my mouth…… and turned them back from their evil ways and deeds.” God’s word was meant to call Judah away from idolatry, injustice, and rebellion before judgment fell. False prophecy left the people comfortable in sin, while true prophetic ministry confronted evil and called for repentance. Ezk 18:30-32 Therefore, O house of Israel, I will judge you… “Am I only a God nearby,” declares the LORD, The LORD confronts the false prophets of Judah, who spoke as though their secret messages and deceptive visions were beyond His knowledge. God was not confined to Jerusalem, the temple, or any place where men presumed to control access to Him. His presence and authority extend over every person and nation. Deu 4:7 For what nation is great enough to have a god… “and not a God far away?” No distance, hidden act, or private counsel escapes the LORD’s sight. He remains present and active both near and far, judging falsehood and sustaining His purposes. The false prophets could not hide behind religious language or claim divine authority without answerability to the God who sees all things. Act 17:27 God intended that they would seek Him, and perhaps reach out… “Can a man hide in secret places where I cannot see him?” God confronts the false prophets who acted as though their lies, schemes, and private conduct were beyond His notice. No hidden place can conceal a person’s actions, motives, or rebellion from the Lord. Amo 9:2-4 Though they dig down to Sheol, from there My hand will take them… declares the LORD. The warning carries God’s own authority. Jeremiah speaks not from personal opinion but as the messenger of the God who sees all. Num 14:28 So tell them: As surely as I live, declares the LORD,… “Do I not fill the heavens and the earth?” The Lord is present throughout all creation and is not limited to Jerusalem, the temple, or any earthly boundary. His rule extends over heaven and earth, leaving no place outside His knowledge or authority. 1Ki 8:27 But will God indeed dwell upon the earth?… declares the LORD. God confirms the certainty of His judgment against those who falsely claim to speak in His name. Num 23:19 God is not a man, that He should lie, or a son of man,… “I have heard the sayings of the prophets who prophesy lies in My name: The Lord knew the claims and messages of Judah’s false prophets. While presenting themselves as His representatives, they contradicted His warnings of coming judgment and assured the nation of peace and security. By invoking God’s name, they gave divine authority to their own inventions and led the people away from the truth. Jer 14:14 “The prophets are prophesying lies in My name,”… ‘I had a dream! I had a dream!’ Dreams could be a means of genuine revelation, but these prophets used supposed dreams to support lies. The repeated claim exposes the constant stream of fabricated visions offered to persuade the people. Their messages did not reflect God’s revealed will or the conditions facing Judah as Babylon’s threat drew near. Jer 29:8-9 For this is what the LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel, says:… How long will this continue in the hearts of these prophets God exposes the stubborn resolve behind the false messages circulating in Judah. Rather than speaking His word, these men persisted in claims that encouraged the nation to disregard the coming judgment. Jer 14:14 “The prophets are prophesying lies in My name,”… who prophesy falsehood, Their predictions contradicted God’s warnings through Jeremiah. They promised security and peace while Jerusalem’s rebellion, idolatry, and refusal to repent were bringing the nation toward Babylonian conquest. 1Ki 22:23 So you see, the LORD has put a lying spirit… these prophets of the delusion of their own minds? Their messages arose from human imagination and desire, not from revelation. Whether self-deceived or deliberately deceptive, they claimed divine authority for words God had not spoken and led the people away from the truth. Ezk 13:3 This is what the Lord GOD says: Woe to the foolish prophets… They suppose the dreams that they tell one another False prophets claimed dreams as divine revelation while promoting messages God had not given them. Dreams could be a genuine means of revelation, but these men used them to support lies and strengthen one another in deception. Deu 13:1-3 If a prophet or dreamer of dreams arises among you… will make My people forget My name, Their false messages would draw Judah away from the Lord’s covenant, authority, and worship. To forget God’s name was to abandon the knowledge of who He is and the obedience He required. Psa 44:20-21 If we had forgotten the name of our God… just as their fathers forgot My name Israel’s history included repeated departures from the Lord, as earlier generations neglected His law and turned to other gods. Their unfaithfulness brought spiritual corruption and judgment upon the nation. Jdg 2:10-13 After that whole generation had also been gathered… through the worship of Baal. Baal worship had become a persistent source of idolatry in Israel and Judah. By embracing the Canaanite god of storms and fertility, the people rejected the Lord’s exclusive claim upon them and repeated the sins that had ruined their fathers. 1Ki 18:18 “I have not troubled Israel,” Elijah replied, “but you…”… Let the prophet who has a dream retell it, Dreams were widely regarded in the ancient world as possible channels of divine communication, and false prophets in Judah used such claims to lend authority to messages God had not given them. They proclaimed peace and security while Jerusalem stood under judgment for persistent rebellion. Jer 29:8-9 For this is what the LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel, says:… but let him who has My word speak it truthfully. Jeremiah had received the LORD’s word and was bound to proclaim it without alteration, even though it brought opposition, imprisonment, and public scorn. God’s messenger was not free to soften judgment or substitute personal visions for the revelation entrusted to him. Deu 18:18-19 I will raise up for them a prophet like you… For what is straw compared to grain?” The false dreams were like straw: abundant but unable to nourish or sustain. God’s word was like grain, carrying the substance, truth, and power needed by His people. The contrast exposes the emptiness of messages shaped by human desire beside the certainty of what God had spoken. Mat 3:12 His winnowing fork is in His hand to clear His threshing… declares the LORD. The warning rests on the LORD’s own authority. Jeremiah’s message did not arise from personal interpretation or political opinion, but from the God whose word stands and accomplishes His purpose. Num 14:28 So tell them: As surely as I live, declares the LORD,… “Is not My word like fire,” declares the LORD, God’s word exposes sin, judges falsehood, and consumes what cannot stand before His holiness. In Jeremiah’s day, the false prophets offered comforting messages that ignored Judah’s rebellion and coming judgment. The LORD’s true word would prove them wrong, purifying His people through the discipline of exile and revealing His sovereign authority. Jer 5:14 Therefore this is what the LORD God of Hosts says:… “and like a hammer that smashes a rock?” God’s message has power to shatter hardened hearts, human pride, and deceptive claims of peace. No resistance from Judah’s leaders, priests, or prophets could prevent the judgment God had announced. The same word that tore down false security would also prepare the way for restoration according to His covenant promises. Heb 4:12 For the word of God is living and active.… “Therefore behold,” The Lord calls Judah to give careful attention to His coming judgment. Ezk 13:8 Therefore this is what the Lord GOD says… declares the LORD, The warning carries the authority of Israel’s covenant God. Ezk 13:7 Haven’t you seen a false vision and spoken a lying divination… “I am against the prophets God opposes men who claimed to represent Him while leading the nation away from His word. Ezk 13:9 My hand will be against the prophets who see false visions.… who steal from one another words Rather than receiving revelation from the Lord, they repeated and adapted one another’s messages, spreading unauthorized promises of peace and security. 1Ki 22:13-14 Then the messenger who had gone to call Micaiah… they attribute to Me.” By claiming the Lord’s authority for words He had not spoken, they deceived Judah and dishonored His name. Ezk 22:28 Her prophets whitewash these deeds by false visions… “Yes,” declares the LORD, God solemnly confirms His judgment against those who claim to speak for Him without receiving His word. Ezk 13:8 Therefore this is what the Lord GOD says… “I am against the prophets In Jeremiah’s day, false prophets reassured Judah that disaster would not come, contradicting the warnings God gave through Jeremiah about coming Babylonian judgment. Deu 18:20 But if any prophet dares to speak a message in My name… who wag their own tongues Their messages arose from their own desires and imagination, crafted to please their listeners rather than expose Judah’s sin and call the nation to repentance. Ezk 13:2 Son of man, prophesy against the prophets of Israel… and proclaim, ‘The LORD declares it.’” By attaching the Lord’s name to words He had not spoken, they misrepresented His authority and led the people into false security. Ezk 13:7 Haven’t you seen a false vision and spoken a lying divination… “Indeed,” declares the LORD, God announces His judgment with full authority. Ezk 13:8 Therefore this is what the Lord GOD says… “I am against those who prophesy false dreams In Jeremiah’s day, men claimed divine dreams while inventing messages that contradicted God’s warnings of coming judgment. Deu 13:1-3 If a prophet or dreamer of dreams arises among you… and retell them to lead My people astray Their repeated claims persuaded the people to trust false peace rather than repent and obey the Lord. Deu 13:5 Such a prophet or dreamer must be put to death,… with their reckless lies. Their deception was careless toward both God’s truth and the spiritual welfare of the nation. Ezk 13:6-7 They see false visions and speak lying divinations.… It was not I who sent them or commanded them, They had no commission from God and spoke without His authority. Jer 27:15 For I have not sent them, declares the LORD,… and they are of no benefit at all to these people,” Rather than helping Judah, their messages encouraged rebellion and left the people unprepared for judgment. Jer 2:8 The priests did not ask, ‘Where is the LORD?’… declares the LORD. The Lord Himself exposes and condemns those who use His name to support lies. Num 23:19 God is not a man, that He should lie, or a son of man,…
False PropheciesJeremiah addressed every level of Judah’s society, including religious leaders who had helped foster rebellion against the LORD. Prophets and priests were expected to guide the nation in truth, yet many had corrupted their offices and encouraged false confidence. Ezk 7:26 Disaster upon disaster will come, and rumor after rumor.… ‘What is the burden of the LORD?’ The question had become a careless or mocking way of asking for a prophetic message. “Burden” (Hebrew: massa) can mean a prophetic oracle or a heavy message, often one of judgment. God’s warnings of judgment were treated as a matter of ridicule rather than received with repentance. Isa 13:1 This is the burden against Babylon that Isaiah… you are to say to them, ‘What burden? Their contempt for God’s word brought a fitting answer. Having rejected repeated warnings, they could not presume upon further guidance or favor from the LORD. Jer 17:15 Behold, they keep saying to me, “Where is the word… I will forsake you, declares the LORD.’ The LORD announced the removal of His protection from Judah. This judgment would be realized in the Babylonian invasion and exile, the consequence of the nation’s persistent idolatry, injustice, and refusal to heed His prophets. Deu 31:17-18 On that day My anger will burn against them,… As for the prophet or priest or anyone who claims, Jeremiah addresses those entrusted with spiritual leadership as well as anyone who presumed to speak for God. Many in Judah used religious office and public influence to spread false assurances rather than call the nation to repentance. Deu 18:20-22 But if any prophet dares to speak a message in My name… ‘This is the burden of the LORD,’ Some falsely presented their own words as messages from the Lord, using sacred language to give authority to lies. Their claims directly contradicted the warnings God had given through Jeremiah. Mal 1:1 This is the burden of the word of the LORD to Israel… I will punish that man and his household. God held false teachers accountable for misrepresenting His word and misleading others. The judgment extending to the household shows the far-reaching consequences of rebellion within Israel’s covenant community. 1Sa 2:31-34 Behold, the days are coming when I will cut off… This is what each man is to say to his friend and to his brother: Jeremiah directs the people back to honest conversation about God’s will. Judah had been harmed by prophets who claimed divine authority while speaking from their own imaginations. Families and neighbors were not to repeat such claims uncritically but to seek what the LORD had truly revealed. Mal 3:16 At that time those who feared the LORD spoke… ‘What has the LORD answered?’ The question calls for a genuine response from God rather than the comforting messages promoted by false prophets. The LORD had spoken through Jeremiah concerning judgment because of Judah’s persistent sin, and the people needed to distinguish His word from human assurances of peace and safety. Jer 42:4 “I have heard you,” replied Jeremiah the prophet.”… or ‘What has the LORD spoken?’ God’s revealed word carried binding authority for the nation. The prophets were accountable to deliver only what He had given them, not messages shaped by popular desire or personal ambition. Jeremiah’s warning exposed those who used the LORD’s name while contradicting His declared judgment. Amo 3:8 The lion has roared—who will not fear?… But refer no more to the burden of the LORD, Jeremiah forbids a slogan that false prophets had turned into a casual and deceptive claim of divine authority. They used it while denying the judgment God had announced against Judah. Zec 12:1 This is the burden of the word of the LORD… for each man’s word becomes the burden, Their own opinions and invented assurances were being presented as messages from God. By doing so, they replaced the Lord’s revelation with words shaped by fear, political desire, and personal gain. Jer 14:14 “The prophets are prophesying lies in My name,”… so that you pervert the words of the living God, God’s warnings of coming judgment were twisted into promises of peace and safety. Such corruption misled the people and encouraged them to remain in rebellion. Pro 30:5-6 Every word of God is flawless; He is a shield… the LORD of Hosts, The God who commands the armies of heaven had spoken with authority and would carry out His judgment against Jerusalem and Judah. 1Sa 1:3 Year after year Elkanah would go up from his city… our God. Israel’s covenant God was not distant or unknown. Their false prophets were corrupting the words of the very God who had revealed Himself to His people. Psa 48:14 For this God is our God forever and ever;… Thus you are to say to the prophet: Judah was to hold those claiming prophetic authority accountable. In the years before Babylon’s invasion, false prophets promised security and denied the coming judgment God had announced through Jeremiah. Num 22:38 “See, I have come to you,” Balaam replied…… ‘What has the LORD answered you?’ The people were to ask whether the prophet had truly received an answer from the Lord, rather than accepting claims of revelation without examination. Ezk 14:4 Therefore speak to them and tell them that… and ‘What has the LORD spoken?’ God’s word, not the prophet’s imagination or popular opinion, was the standard. True prophecy faithfully conveyed what the Lord had said and did not contradict His revealed purposes. Num 23:12 But Balaam replied, “Should I not speak…”… But if you claim, ‘This is the burden of the LORD,’ The people and their prophets used God’s name to give weight to messages He had not spoken. In a time of widespread spiritual corruption, false assurances and invented revelations led Judah away from repentance. Mal 1:1 This is the burden of the word of the LORD to Israel… then this is what the LORD says: God answers their deception with His own authoritative judgment. He distinguishes His true word from the claims of those who presumed to speak for Him. Ezk 12:25 I, the LORD, will speak whatever word I speak… Because you have said, ‘This is the burden of the LORD,’ Their continued use of this claim showed deliberate disregard for God’s warning. Rather than receiving the word He gave through Jeremiah, they repeated messages that supported their own desires and misled the nation. Ezk 13:6-7 They see false visions and speak lying divinations.… and I specifically told you not to make this claim, God had plainly forbidden them from treating their own words as divine revelation. Their disobedience made them accountable not only for rejecting His command but also for leading others into false confidence. Deu 18:20 But if any prophet dares to speak a message in My name… therefore I will surely forget you God announces certain judgment upon Judah for rejecting His word and following false prophets. His “forgetting” denotes the withdrawal of covenant favor and protection from a people who had persistently forsaken Him. Hos 4:6 My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge… and will cast you out of My presence, Judah would be removed from the land where God had placed His name and where the temple stood. This judgment was fulfilled when Babylon conquered Jerusalem and carried its people into exile. 2Ki 24:20 For because of the anger of the LORD, all this… both you and the city that I gave to you and your fathers. Jerusalem, though given by God as part of Israel’s inheritance, would not be spared because of the people’s unfaithfulness. The coming destruction showed that possession of the city and temple did not protect those who refused God’s authority. 2Ki 23:27 For the LORD had said, “I will remove Judah from My sight… And I will bring upon you everlasting shame God declares judgment on Judah’s false prophets and corrupt leaders who claimed to speak for Him while leading the people into error. Their public honor would be replaced by lasting disgrace because they had abused their spiritual authority. Dan 12:2 And many who sleep in the dust of the earth will awake… and perpetual humiliation The coming judgment would expose their lies and strip away the respect they had gained among the people. Their downfall would show that God had not approved their message or their conduct. Jer 20:11 But the LORD is with me like a fearsome warrior.… that will never be forgotten.” Their shame would remain a permanent testimony to the consequences of rejecting God’s word and deceiving His people. Psa 109:15 May their sins always remain before the LORD,… This is a draft of the Berean Study Bible. Please send all comments and recommendations to bereanstudybible@aol.com. Bible Hub |
