Judah, including Jerusalem, was the covenant land promised to Israel. Jehoiachin’s removal from it marked the collapse of his reign and the beginning of Judah’s final exile under Babylonian power.

Babylon was a foreign land far from Jerusalem and the temple, where Coniah lived as a captive for many years. Judah’s exile fulfilled the warnings that continued disobedience would bring removal from the land God had given them.

O land, land, land,Judah is summoned with urgent repetition to attend to God’s warning. The whole nation—its rulers, people, cities, and territory—stood under judgment for persistent rebellion, injustice, and idolatry. The land promised to Israel had been defiled by the sins of those who lived in it and would soon suffer the effects of Babylon’s invasion.
