Giving a priestly city within Judah’s inheritance joined the service of the Levites to one of Israel’s most prominent tribal regions. From Judah came David’s royal line and, ultimately, the Messiah. Jos 14:13 Then Joshua blessed Caleb son of Jephunneh… and its surrounding pasturelands. The Levites received cities with adjoining pasturelands rather than a broad tribal territory. These lands provided space for livestock and household needs, enabling the priests and Levites to maintain their families while carrying out their assigned service. Jos 21:12 But they had given the fields and villages around the city… But the fields and villages around the city The fields and villages surrounding Hebron were assigned as an inheritance to Caleb. Although the city itself was given to the Levites, its surrounding pastureland, farmland, and settlements remained under tribal ownership. Jos 21:11-13 They gave them Kiriath-arba (that is, Hebron)… were given to Caleb In fulfillment of the inheritance promised to Caleb after his faithful report about Canaan, Hebron and its surrounding land in Judah’s territory were given to him. Jdg 1:20 Just as Moses had promised, Judah gave Hebron to Caleb… son of Jephunneh. Caleb’s possession distinguished the Levitical city from the land around it, preserving both the Levites’ needs and Caleb’s rightful inheritance. Deu 1:36 except Caleb son of Jephunneh. He will see it,… So the descendants of Aaron were given Hebron (a city of refuge), Aaron’s descendants served as priests among the Levites. Hebron, in Judah’s hill country, provided refuge for those accused of unintentional killing until judgment could be made. It was also associated with the patriarchs, whose burial place there connected the city with God’s covenant promises. Jos 21:11 They gave them Kiriath-arba (that is, Hebron)… Libnah, Located in Judah’s lowlands, Libnah was assigned to the priests as part of their provision, since the Levites received no tribal territory of their own. Jos 15:42 Libnah, Ether, Ashan, Jattir, Jattir lay in the hill country of Judah and supported the priestly families serving among the people. It remained an established Judahite town during David’s reign. Jos 21:14 Jattir, Eshtemoa, Eshtemoa, Eshtemoa was likewise a priestly city in Judah’s hill country. These scattered Levitical cities placed priests throughout the land, giving Israel access to instruction, worship, and judicial guidance. Jos 15:50 Anab, Eshtemoh, Anim, Hilen, Hilen was a town in Judah assigned to the descendants of Aaron among the Levitical cities. It gave the priests a settled home while dispersing them among the tribes for their sanctuary service. Jos 21:15 Holon, Debir, Debir, Debir was another town in Judah assigned to the priests. Formerly known as Kiriath-sepher, meaning “City of Books,” it was captured during the conquest and became part of Israel’s inheritance. Its Levitical assignment placed priestly teachers within Judah’s territory. Jos 15:49 Dannah, Kiriath-sannah (that is, Debir), Ashan, Ashan, meaning “smoke” or “cloud,” was a town in Simeon’s territory, within Judah, assigned to the Levites along with its surrounding pasturelands. Located in the Negev, it helped support Levitical ministry among Israel’s southern communities. Jos 15:42 Libnah, Ether, Ashan, Juttah, Juttah, located in Judah’s hill country, was given to the Levites. It served as part of the network of Levitical settlements that supported instruction and worship throughout the land. Jos 21:16 Ain, Juttah, and Beth-shemesh—nine cities… and Beth-shemesh, Beth-shemesh, meaning “house of the sun,” near the border of Judah and Dan, was a significant Levitical city. It later received the ark when the Philistines returned it to Israel. Jos 19:22 The border reached Tabor, Shahazumah, and Beth-shemesh… together with their pasturelands. These lands provided room for livestock and the practical support needed by the Levites, whose service to the Lord prevented them from receiving a tribal territory of their own. Jos 21:41-42 For the Levites, then, there were forty-eight cities… And from the tribe of Benjamin Benjamin’s territory lay north of Judah and included several important cities near Jerusalem. Its cities were assigned to priestly families so that worship and instruction in God’s law would remain present among the people. Jos 18:11-28 The first lot came up for the clans of the tribe of Benjamin… they were given Gibeon, Gibeon became an important place of worship during Israel’s early monarchy and was later associated with the tabernacle. Jos 21:17 And from the tribe of Benjamin they gave them Gibeon, Geba, Geba, Geba stood near Benjamin’s northern frontier and held strategic value because of its location along approaches to Jerusalem. 1Sa 13:3-4 Then Jonathan attacked the Philistine outpost at Geba,… Alemeth, Alemeth was one of the Benjaminite towns set apart for the priests and their households. 1Ch 8:36 Ahaz was the father of Jehoaddah, Jehoaddah… and Anathoth, Anathoth was a priestly city in Benjamin and later became the home of the prophet Jeremiah. The surrounding pasturelands supplied the priests with space for livestock and daily provision, since they received no tribal territory of their own. Num 35:2-5 Command the Israelites to give, from the inheritance… So they had thirteen cities in all among their families. These cities formed part of the inheritance given to the descendants of Aaron, providing established places for their families and priestly service throughout Israel. Jos 21:19 In all, thirteen cities, together with their pasturelands… To the rest of the Kohathites, These were the Kohathite families other than the descendants of Aaron, who had received priestly cities in Judah, Simeon, and Benjamin. They belonged to the Levites entrusted with the care of the most holy furnishings of the tabernacle. Jos 21:20-22 The remaining Kohathite clans of the Levites were allotted… ten cities were allotted Like the other Levites, they received scattered cities rather than a tribal territory, providing homes for their families and placing Levitical servants among the tribes of Israel. Jos 21:26 In all, ten cities, together with their pasturelands,… from the half-tribe of Manasseh. These cities came from Manasseh’s western inheritance in Canaan, since the other half of the tribe had settled east of the Jordan. Jos 21:25 And from the half-tribe of Manasseh they were given… The Gershomites, according to their clans, The Gershomites were descendants of Gershom, Levi’s eldest son, and formed one of the three major Levitical divisions. Their clan organization provided an orderly way to assign homes and duties among those set apart for service to the Lord. Num 4:22-28 Take a census of the Gershonites as well, by their families… were allotted thirteen cities Because the Levites received no tribal territory, they lived in designated cities scattered throughout Israel. These cities provided homes for Gershom’s descendants and placed Levitical servants among the people. Jos 21:33 In all, thirteen cities, together with their pasturelands,… from the tribes of Issachar, Asher, Naphtali, and Manasseh in Bashan. The Gershomites were established largely in the northern tribes, including the fertile and fortified region of Bashan east of the Jordan. Their distribution ensured that Levites were present across these territories to carry out the responsibilities entrusted to their families. Jos 21:27-32 This is what the Levite clans of the Gershonites… The Merarites, according to their clans, The Merarites were one of the three Levite divisions, descended from Merari, son of Levi. Their assigned tabernacle service included carrying and maintaining its framework, bars, pillars, bases, and related equipment. Their service was organized by family lines so that each household could fulfill its appointed responsibility. Num 3:33-37 From Merari came the clans of the Mahlites and Mushites;… were allotted twelve cities Unlike the other tribes, the Levites received no large tribal territory. They were given towns with surrounding pasturelands, providing homes and support while placing them among the people of Israel for their service in worship and instruction. Jos 21:7 And the descendants of Merari received twelve cities… from the tribes of Reuben, Gad, and Zebulun. Reuben and Gad supplied cities east of the Jordan, while Zebulun supplied cities in northern Canaan. These grants distributed the Merarites across Israel and reflected the shared responsibility of the tribes to support those appointed for the Lord’s service. Jos 21:34-40 This is what the Merarite clan were given:… So the Israelites The descendants of Jacob carried out the Lord’s command to provide for the tribe set apart for His service. Jos 21:3 So by the command of the LORD, the Israelites… gave to the Levites Although the Levites received no tribal territory of their own, they were assigned cities among the other tribes. The priests descended from Aaron served at the sanctuary, while the other Levites assisted with its care and worship. Num 35:7-8 The total number of cities you give the Levites… these cities and their pasturelands. The cities gave Levite families places to live, and the surrounding pasturelands supported their livestock. This distribution enabled them to carry out their appointed duties while remaining throughout Israel. Jos 21:41-42 For the Levites, then, there were forty-eight cities… They assigned by lot The Levites received their cities by the same divinely governed process used in distributing the land among Israel. The lot confirmed that these assignments were not merely tribal arrangements but part of God’s order for the nation. Though the Levites received no single tribal territory, they were established in cities throughout Israel so that priestly instruction and service remained accessible to the people. Their locations placed the priests near the center of Israel’s worship and within the region that would later include Jerusalem. Jos 21:9-19 From the tribes of Judah and Simeon, they designated… And some of the clans of the Kohathites The Kohathites descended from Kohath, Levi’s second son, and formed one of the principal Levitical divisions. They were entrusted with the care and transport of the most holy furnishings of the tabernacle, including the ark, table, lampstand, and altars. Their duties placed them near the center of Israel’s worship and required careful obedience to God’s commands. Jos 21:4-5 The first lot came out for the Kohathite clans.… were given cities Unlike the other tribes, the Levites received no continuous tribal inheritance. They were assigned cities and surrounding pasturelands within the territories of the other tribes, providing homes for their families and land for their animals. Their distribution enabled them to serve Israel throughout the land as ministers of worship and instructors in God’s law. Jos 21:8 So the Israelites allotted to the Levites these cities… from the tribe of Ephraim Ephraim, descended from Joseph, occupied a prominent central region of the land. Giving Kohathite cities within Ephraim’s borders placed Levites among a leading tribe of Israel and strengthened the worshiping life of the surrounding communities. Jos 21:20-22 The remaining Kohathite clans of the Levites were allotted… for their territory: The Levites’ inheritance consisted of scattered cities rather than a separate region. This arrangement marked them as belonging to the Lord’s service and connected every tribe to the worship and instruction centered on Him. Jos 21:41-42 For the Levites, then, there were forty-eight cities… They were given Shechem Located between Mount Ebal and Mount Gerizim, Shechem was associated with God’s promise to Abraham and later served as a gathering place for Israel. Jos 21:21 they were given Shechem in the hill country of Ephraim… (a city of refuge) As one of the appointed cities of refuge, Shechem sheltered those responsible for accidental death until their case could be judged, restraining personal vengeance and upholding justice. Jos 20:7 So they set apart Kedesh in Galilee in the hill country… with its pasturelands The surrounding grazing lands supported the Levite families and their livestock, since the Levites received cities rather than a tribal territory. Jos 21:2 Shiloh in the land of Canaan and said to them,… in the hill country of Ephraim, Shechem stood in central Israel within Ephraim’s hill country, placing Levitical ministry among the tribes in a prominent and well-traveled region. Jos 17:15 Joshua answered them, “If you have so many people…”… and Gezer, Gezer lay farther west near important routes leading toward the coastal plain. Although Israel did not initially drive out its Canaanite inhabitants, it was assigned as a Levitical city within Ephraim’s territory. Jos 16:3 Then it descended westward to the border of the Japhletites… Jokmeam, A city in Ephraim assigned to the Kohathite Levites, with surrounding pasturelands for their households and livestock. Jokmeam means “the people will rise.” Its place among the Levitical cities reflects Israel’s provision for those appointed to serve at the sanctuary and teach God’s law. Jos 21:20-22 The remaining Kohathite clans of the Levites were allotted… Beth-horon, Upper and Lower Beth-horon, meaning “house of the hollow,” stood on an important ascent between the coastal plain and the central hill country. The route was the setting for Joshua’s defeat of the Amorites, and the towns later remained significant for travel and defense. Assigned to the Kohathites, Beth-horon joined Ephraim’s other cities in supporting Levitical service. Jos 16:3 Then it descended westward to the border of the Japhletites… Aijalon, A fortified town in Dan’s territory, Aijalon guarded a strategic route between the coastal plain and the hill country. Its location made it important in Israel’s conflicts and administration. Jos 21:24 Aijalon, and Gath-rimmon—four cities… and Gath-rimmon, Also in Dan, Gath-rimmon, meaning “winepress of the pomegranate,” was assigned to the Kohathite Levites. These cities placed Levites among the tribes, enabling them to carry out their duties and instruct the people in God’s law. Jos 21:25 And from the half-tribe of Manasseh they were given… together with their pasturelands. The surrounding grazing land supplied the Levites’ livestock and household needs. Though they received no tribal territory of their own, God provided cities and pasturelands for their service. The eastern half-tribe contributed cities from Bashan for the Levites. Jos 21:28-29 From the tribe of Issachar they were given Kishion,… Ramoth, Ramoth, meaning “heights” or “high places,” was a Levitical city in the territory of Issachar, assigned to the descendants of Gershom as a place to live and serve among the people. Jos 19:21 Remeth, En-gannim, En-haddah, and Beth-pazzez. and Anem, Anem was another city in the territory of Issachar and formed part of the tribe’s inheritance. The Levites received cities throughout Israel rather than a separate tribal territory, enabling them to carry out their duties of worship and instruction among all the tribes. The surrounding grazing lands supplied space for livestock and supported the households of the Levites, whose provision came through the offerings and tithes of Israel. Jos 21:2-3 Shiloh in the land of Canaan and said to them,… And from the tribe of Naphtali Naphtali occupied Israel’s northern territory, and its contribution of Levitical cities helped place spiritual instruction and worship throughout the land. Jos 21:6 The descendants of Gershon received thirteen cities… they were given Kedesh in Galilee, Kedesh was a prominent city in Upper Galilee and served as a city of refuge for one who caused an unintentional death. Its location made it accessible to the northern tribes. Jos 20:7 So they set apart Kedesh in Galilee in the hill country… Hammon, Hammon was assigned to the Levites as part of Israel’s provision for those devoted to priestly service and the teaching of God’s law. Jos 21:32 And from the tribe of Naphtali they were given… and Kiriathaim, Kiriathaim completed the group of Levitical cities drawn from Naphtali, though its exact location is no longer certain. Jos 13:19 Kiriathaim, Sibmah, Zereth-shahar on the hill in the valley, together with their pasturelands. The surrounding lands supplied room for livestock and supported Levitical households. Though the Levites received no tribal territory of their own, God provided for their material needs through these cities and their pasturelands. Jos 21:2 Shiloh in the land of Canaan and said to them,… The Merarites (the rest of the Levites) received the following: The Merarites, descended from Levi’s son Merari, served alongside the Kohathites and Gershonites in the tabernacle. Their duties included transporting and maintaining its framework, pillars, bases, and other structural elements. Like the other Levites, they received cities and surrounding pasturelands rather than a tribal territory. Jos 21:34-40 This is what the Merarite clan were given:… From the tribe of Zebulun they were given Rimmono and Tabor, Zebulun’s inheritance lay in northern Israel. Rimmono, also called Rimmon, and Tabor were assigned to the Merarites as Levitical cities. Tabor was near Mount Tabor, a prominent landmark overlooking the Jezreel Valley. Jos 19:12-14 From Sarid it turned eastward along the border… together with their pasturelands. The surrounding lands supported the Levites’ households and livestock, enabling them to carry out their appointed service while living among the tribes of Israel. Jos 21:41-42 For the Levites, then, there were forty-eight cities… From the tribe of Reuben Reuben, Jacob’s firstborn, received its inheritance east of the Jordan because its families possessed large herds and desired the region’s pastureland. Though the tribe held substantial territory, it did not become a leading force among Israel. Jos 13:15-23 This is what Moses had given to the clans of the tribe… east of the Jordan Reuben’s land lay in the Transjordan, alongside Gad and the half-tribe of Manasseh. This territory had been taken from the Amorite kings before Israel entered Canaan and remained exposed to pressure from eastern peoples. Num 32:19 Yet we will not have an inheritance with them… opposite Jericho The region faced the plains of Jericho, where Israel crossed the Jordan under Joshua to begin the conquest of Canaan. Its location connected Reuben’s inheritance to a decisive setting in Israel’s entrance into the land. Num 22:1 Then the Israelites traveled on and camped in the plains… they were given Bezer in the wilderness, Bezer was appointed as a city of refuge, providing protection for someone responsible for an unintentional death until a proper judgment could be made. Its placement in Reuben’s territory made this provision available to the tribes east of the Jordan. Deu 4:43 Bezer in the wilderness on the plateau… Jahzah, Jahzah was associated with Israel’s defeat of Sihon, king of the Amorites, during Moses’ leadership. The victory secured the territory later assigned to Reuben. Jos 13:18 Jahaz, Kedemoth, Mephaath, Kedemoth, Kedemoth, meaning “eastern parts” or “ancient places,” was a Reubenite city east of the Jordan, near the wilderness from which Moses sent messengers to Sihon king of Heshbon. It was assigned to the Merarite Levites as part of Israel’s provision for those serving at the sanctuary. Its position in the Transjordan made it an important administrative and military center. In later generations, control of Ramoth became a source of conflict between Israel and Aram. Jos 21:38 And from the tribe of Gad they were given Ramoth in Gilead,… Mahanaim, Mahanaim, meaning “two camps,” lay in Gilead east of the Jordan and was associated with Jacob’s encounter with the angels of God. It later served as a secure refuge for David during Absalom’s rebellion, when he established his headquarters there. Its location and defenses made it a significant city in Israel’s history. 2Sa 2:8 Meanwhile, Abner son of Ner, the commander of Saul’s army,… Heshbon, Heshbon was once the capital of Sihon, king of the Amorites. After Moses defeated Sihon, the city passed to Israel and was later assigned to the Merarite Levites from the territory of Gad. Jos 21:39 Heshbon, and Jazer—four cities in all,… and Jazer, Jazer, captured by Israel during the Transjordan campaigns, was a productive city known for its fields and vineyards. It also became a Levitical city. Num 21:32 After Moses had sent spies to Jazer, Israel captured… together with their pasturelands. The surrounding grazing lands provided for the Levites’ flocks and households, enabling them to serve throughout Israel without a separate tribal inheritance.
