2 Samuel 12

Nathan Rebukes David

Then the LORD sent Nathan to David,

God acted to expose David’s sin with Bathsheba and Uriah. Nathan served as the Lord’s prophet and messenger, bringing the king face to face with wrongdoing that David had sought to conceal.

2Sa 7:4 But that night the word of the LORD came to Nathan, saying,
1Ch 17:3-4 But that night the word of God came to Nathan, saying,…

and when he arrived, he said,

Nathan did not begin with a direct accusation. He presented a case that would lead David to render an honest judgment before recognizing that the guilty man was himself.

2Sa 7:5 Go and tell My servant David that this is what the LORD says:…
1Ki 1:23-24 So the king was told, “Nathan the prophet is here.”…

one rich and the other poor.

The contrast prepares the central charge against David. Though he possessed power, wives, and royal privileges, he took what belonged to Uriah, a faithful soldier with far less.

Pro 22:2 The rich and the poor have this in common:…
Luk 16:20-21 And a beggar named Lazarus lay at his gate…

The rich man

The rich man represents David, who possessed royal power, many wives, and abundant resources. Nathan’s parable exposes how David took what belonged to Uriah despite having been greatly blessed.

This phrase portrays the extent of David’s privileges as king. Against Uriah’s single beloved lamb, the rich man’s abundance makes his selfishness and injustice unmistakable.

but the poor man had nothing except one small ewe lamb that he had bought.

The poor man’s single lamb emphasizes his severe poverty in contrast to the rich man’s abundant flocks and herds. Though it was his only possession of value, he had acquired it lawfully and treasured it.

The lamb was deeply loved and protected, like a child of the household. Nathan’s account heightens the injustice of taking such a beloved possession from a man who had so little.

David burned with anger against the man

David responds with righteous indignation to the injustice in Nathan’s story, condemning the rich man’s cruelty toward a poor neighbor. Yet his anger exposes how fully he has failed to recognize his own guilt in taking Bathsheba and arranging Uriah’s death.

and said to Nathan:

Nathan has drawn David into giving an unguarded judgment. As the Lord’s prophet, he confronts the king with God’s truth and prepares David to see that the case he has judged is his own.

1Ki 17:1 Now Elijah the Tishbite, who was among the settlers…

the man who did this deserves to die!

David considers the rich man’s act worthy of the severest punishment. His verdict is especially striking because David himself has committed far greater sins against Bathsheba, Uriah, and the Lord.

Nathan exposes David’s adultery with Bathsheba and his arranged killing of Uriah. Though king, David remained accountable to God’s law and bore responsibility for abusing his power against a faithful servant.

David pronounced the restitution required by the law for stealing a lamb. His judgment also foreshadowed severe loss within his own house, including the deaths of the child born to Bathsheba, Amnon, Absalom, and Adonijah.

Pro 6:31 Yet if caught, he must pay sevenfold; he must give up…

Then Nathan said to David, “You are that man!

Nathan exposes David as the guilty man in the parable of the rich man who stole a poor man’s lamb. David had pronounced judgment without recognizing his own sin in taking Bathsheba and arranging Uriah’s death. God’s prophet confronts the king openly, showing that David’s authority does not place him above God’s law.

1Ki 21:20 When Elijah arrived, Ahab said to him,…
2Sa 24:10 After David had numbered the troops, he said to the LORD…

This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says:

Nathan delivers God’s own judgment. The LORD is Israel’s covenant God and the true ruler over David and the nation. His declaration establishes the authority behind Nathan’s rebuke.

1Ki 14:7 Go, tell Jeroboam that this is what the LORD says:…
2Ki 19:20 Then Isaiah son of Amoz sent a message to Hezekiah:…
2Sa 7:8 Now then, you are to tell My servant David…

‘I anointed you king over Israel,

David’s kingship came from God, who chose and established him after Saul. The anointing marked David as God’s appointed ruler, entrusted with leading Israel under God’s authority.

1Sa 16:13 So Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him…
Psa 89:20 I have found My servant David; with My sacred oil…
2Sa 5:3 So all the elders of Israel came to the king at Hebron…

and I delivered you from the hand of Saul.

God had repeatedly preserved David when Saul pursued him and sought his life. David’s sin stands against the background of God’s protection, provision, and faithfulness toward him.

1Sa 23:14 And David stayed in the wilderness strongholds…
1Sa 24:10 Behold, this day you have seen with your own eyes…
1Sa 26:24 As surely as I valued your life today, so may the LORD…

I gave your master’s house to you

God raised David from Saul’s service to Saul’s throne, placing the royal household, possessions, and authority under his rule after Saul’s death. David’s kingship came by God’s appointment, not merely by political success.

2Sa 3:10 to transfer the kingdom from the house of Saul…
1Sa 15:28 So Samuel said to him, “The LORD has torn the kingdom…
1Sa 24:20 Now I know for sure that you will be king…

and your master’s wives into your arms.

The women of Saul’s household passed under David’s protection and royal authority as part of the transfer of the kingdom. Such a transfer publicly demonstrated that Saul’s dynasty had ended and that David had been established as king.

2Sa 16:21-22 Sleep with your father’s concubines, whom he has left…
1Ki 2:22-25 Why do you request Abishag the Shunammite for Adonijah?…
2Sa 3:7-8 Now Saul had a concubine named Rizpah, the daughter…

I gave you the house of Israel and Judah,

God united the tribes under David, first through Judah and then through Israel’s acceptance of him as king. The divided loyalties following Saul’s death gave way to a unified nation under the ruler God had chosen.

2Sa 5:5 In Hebron he reigned over Judah seven years and six months,…
1Ch 11:1-3 Then all Israel came together to David at Hebron and said,…
1Ch 12:38-40 All these men of war, arrayed for battle,…

and if that was not enough, I would have given you even more.

David lacked no legitimate blessing from God. The Lord had already given him a kingdom, security, honor, and a lasting dynasty, and He was willing to grant further good gifts. David’s sin with Bathsheba therefore sprang from disregard for God’s provision rather than from need.

1Ki 3:13 Moreover, I will give you what you did not request…
2Ch 1:11-12 God said to Solomon, “Since this was in your heart…
Eph 3:20 Now to Him who is able to do immeasurably more than all…

Why then have you despised the command of the LORD by doing evil in His sight?

David’s adultery, deception, and arranged killing of Uriah were deliberate offenses against God’s law. As Israel’s king, David was responsible to lead the nation under the covenant, yet he used his authority to conceal sin rather than uphold justice. Nothing done in secret escaped the sight of the LORD.

1Sa 15:26 “I will not return with you,” Samuel replied.…
1Sa 15:23 For rebellion is like the sin of divination…
Num 15:31 He shall certainly be cut off, because he has despised…

You put Uriah the Hittite to the sword and took his wife as your own.

Uriah was a faithful soldier serving David while David violated his marriage and plotted his death. Though Uriah was a Hittite by ancestry, he stood loyally among Israel’s warriors. David broke God’s commands against murder and adultery and then took Bathsheba into his household after Uriah’s death.

1Ki 21:19 Tell him that this is what the LORD says:…
Exo 20:13-14 You shall not murder.…
Lev 20:10 If a man commits adultery with another man’s wife…

You have slain him with the sword of the Ammonites.

David did not strike Uriah himself, but he ordered Joab to place him where the Ammonite attack would kill him. The enemy’s weapon became the means of David’s murder. His attempt to hide the crime failed before God, and the violence he employed would later bring lasting trouble upon his own house.

2Sa 11:17 And when the men of the city came out and fought…
1Ki 2:32-33 The LORD will bring his bloodshed back upon his own head,…
Num 35:33-34 Do not pollute the land where you live, …

Now, therefore, the sword will never depart from your house,

David’s adultery with Bathsheba and his arranged killing of Uriah brought enduring violence into his family. Amnon’s assault of Tamar, Absalom’s murder of Amnon, Absalom’s rebellion against David, and later conflict over the throne fulfilled Nathan’s warning.

1Sa 2:31-33 Behold, the days are coming when I will cut off…
2Sa 13:28-29 Watch Amnon until his heart is merry with wine…
2Sa 18:14-15 But Joab declared, “I am not going to wait like this!”…

because you have despised Me

David used his authority to satisfy his desires while disregarding God’s command. Though he later confessed and repented, his sin was a personal offense against God and brought lasting discipline upon his household.

1Sa 2:30 Therefore, the LORD, the God of Israel, declares:…
Num 15:31 He shall certainly be cut off, because he has despised…
Isa 5:24 Therefore, as a tongue of fire consumes the straw,…

and have taken the wife of Uriah the Hittite to be your own.’

Bathsheba belonged to Uriah, a loyal soldier in David’s service. David’s taking of her and his role in Uriah’s death violated God’s commands and betrayed a faithful man who had trusted his king.

David’s sin would bring conflict into his family. In time, his son Absalom would rebel against him, dividing the kingdom and bringing violence and grief into David’s household.

2Sa 15:10-14 Then Absalom sent spies throughout the tribes of Israel…
2Sa 13:28-29 Watch Amnon until his heart is merry with wine…

The consequences of David’s sin would affect more than his private life. As Israel’s king, his failure brought turmoil upon his family and became a warning to the people concerning the seriousness of sin and the accountability of those who lead.

Deu 13:11 Then all Israel will hear and be afraid,…

David’s Loss and Repentance

Then David said to Nathan, “I have sinned against the LORD.”

Confronted by Nathan, David abandons concealment and admits that his adultery with Bathsheba and the murder of Uriah were rebellion against God. His sin had harmed others and violated Israel’s covenant law, but he recognized that God was the ultimate judge.

Psa 51:4 Against You, You only, have I sinned…
Luk 15:21 The son declared, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven…
1Sa 15:24 Then Saul said to Samuel, “I have sinned;…

“The LORD has taken away your sin,” Nathan replied.

Nathan announced God’s forgiveness immediately. David’s repentance did not erase the damage caused by his actions or remove every consequence, but God pardoned him and restored him from the guilt that deserved judgment.

Zec 3:4 So the angel said to those standing before him…
Isa 6:7 And with it he touched my mouth and said:…
Psa 32:5 Then I acknowledged my sin to You and did not hide…

“You will not die.

Adultery and deliberate murder carried the death penalty under the Law, yet God spared David’s life. The king would still face severe discipline in his household, but God’s mercy preserved him and maintained the promised line through which the Messiah would come.

Ezk 18:21-22 But if the wicked man turns from all the sins…
Ezk 33:14-16 But if I tell the wicked man, ‘You will surely die,’…
Jhn 5:24 Truly, truly, I tell you, whoever hears My word…

Nevertheless, because by this deed

David’s adultery with Bathsheba and his arranged killing of Uriah were deliberate violations of God’s law. Though he was Israel’s king, his authority did not place him above the commands he was called to uphold.

2Ch 25:16 While he was still speaking, the king asked…
2Ki 21:12-14 this is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says:…
1Ki 14:10-11 Because of all this, behold, I am bringing disaster……

you have shown utter contempt for the word of the LORD,

David’s hidden sins dishonored God publicly and treated His command as secondary to his own desires. Nathan identifies the offense as rebellion against the LORD, not merely wrongdoing against Bathsheba and Uriah.

1Sa 15:23 For rebellion is like the sin of divination…
Num 15:31 He shall certainly be cut off, because he has despised…
2Ch 36:16 But they mocked the messengers of God, despising His words…

the son born to you will surely die.”

The child’s death would be a severe temporal judgment upon David’s house. David was forgiven after his repentance, yet the consequences of his sin remained, revealing both God’s justice and the lasting damage caused by David’s choices.

1Ki 14:12-13 As for you, get up and go home. When your feet enter…
1Ki 14:17-18 Then Jeroboam’s wife got up and departed for Tirzah,…
Gen 2:17 but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge…

After Nathan had gone home,

Nathan had confronted David with his adultery and the murder of Uriah, announcing both forgiveness and coming judgment. His departure marks the end of the prophetic confrontation, leaving David to face the consequences God had declared.

Gen 18:33 When the LORD had finished speaking with Abraham,…
Jdg 13:20 When the flame went up from the altar to the sky…

the LORD struck the child

The child’s illness came under God’s direct judgment upon David’s sin. Though David had been forgiven, his actions brought painful consequences upon his household and exposed the seriousness of his rebellion.

1Sa 25:38 About ten days later, the LORD struck Nabal dead.
Exo 12:29 Now at midnight the LORD struck down every firstborn male…
2Ki 19:35 And that very night the angel of the LORD went out…

that Uriah’s wife had borne to David,

Bathsheba is still identified by her former marriage, preserving the memory of David’s adultery and Uriah’s wrongful death. The child’s birth could not erase the wrongdoing that preceded it.

Mat 1:6 And Jesse the father of David the king.…
1Ch 3:5 and these sons were born to him in Jerusalem:…
1Ki 1:11 Then Nathan said to Bathsheba the mother of Solomon,…

and he became ill.

The illness brought grief to David and Bathsheba and led David to seek God earnestly for the child’s life. It also showed Israel that even the king was accountable to the Lord.

1Ki 14:1 At that time Abijah son of Jeroboam became ill,

Though Nathan had announced that the child would die because of David’s sin, David sought the Lord’s mercy. His grief shows the devastating consequences of his adultery with Bathsheba and the murder of Uriah.

2Sa 18:19-23 “Please let me run and tell the king the good news…
Gen 37:34-35 Then Jacob tore his clothes, put sackcloth around his waist,…

Their concern reflects both David’s anguish and the burden of guilt he carried over the child’s death.

1Ki 19:4 while he himself went a day’s journey into the wilderness.…

Jer 20:10 For I have heard the whispering of many:…

Nathan had already declared that the child would die as part of the Lord’s judgment for David’s sin. David now saw that the judgment had been carried out.

2Ki 4:20 After the servant had picked him up and carried him…
Jhn 11:14 So Jesus told them plainly, “Lazarus is dead,
1Ki 17:17 Later, the son of the woman who owned the house…

So he asked his servants, “Is the child dead?”

Rather than remaining in uncertainty, David asked directly for confirmation.

2Sa 18:29 The king asked, “Is the young man Absalom all right?”…
2Ki 4:26 Please run out now to meet her and ask, ‘Are you all right?…
Jhn 11:34 “Where have you put him?” He asked. “Come and see, Lord,”…

“He is dead,” they replied.

The servants confirmed the child’s death. Though David had pleaded with God during the child’s illness, he accepted the Lord’s decision when the child died.

David’s servants were perplexed because his actions ran contrary to customary mourning practices. They had watched him fast, lie on the ground, and plead with God while the child was ill, yet after the child’s death he washed, worshiped, and ate. Their question reveals that they did not yet understand David’s response to God’s judgment.

The servants had been present throughout the child’s illness and had tried to persuade David to care for himself. Their question gives David occasion to explain that his fasting had been a plea for mercy, not an attempt to resist God once His decision had been made.

David mourned and humbled himself before the LORD while there remained reason to seek the child’s life. He knew the child’s illness was connected to the judgment announced after his sin with Bathsheba, yet he appealed to God’s compassion.

Once the child died, David accepted that God’s judgment had been carried out. He did not continue fasting as though he could reverse what God had determined. His return to eating and worship showed submission to the LORD and confidence that death had not ended all hope.

Solomon’s Birth

Then David comforted his wife Bathsheba,

The Capture of Rabbah

Meanwhile, Joab fought against Rabbah of the Ammonites

Joab continued Israel’s campaign against the Ammonites after their rejection and humiliation of David’s messengers had led to war. Rabbah, the Ammonite capital east of the Jordan, was a fortified and important center of royal power. While David remained in Jerusalem, Joab directed the siege and pressed the attack against the city.

The fall of the royal section of Rabbah showed that Ammon’s resistance was collapsing. Its capture secured a major victory for Israel and prepared the way for David to come and complete the conquest, publicly establishing Israel’s rule over the Ammonite capital.

Then Joab sent messengers to David

Joab directed the siege of Rabbah while David remained in Jerusalem. As commander of Israel’s army, he reported major developments to the king and awaited his presence for the final victory.

Rabbah, the chief city of the Ammonites, stood east of the Jordan in the region of present-day Amman. Its capture would end the Ammonite resistance begun after their insult to David’s envoys.

David brought out the people who were there

After capturing Rabbah, David took control of its surviving inhabitants. As was customary in ancient conquest, captives were often subjected to forced labor under the authority of the victorious king.

1Ki 9:20-21 As for all the people who remained of the Amorites…
