Judges 16
Berean Study Bible

Samson Escapes Gaza

One day Samson went to Gaza,

Samson entered one of the five chief Philistine cities on the southwestern coast of Canaan. His presence in this enemy stronghold showed the boldness that marked his career as Israel’s judge, but it also placed him in the center of Philistine territory during Israel’s continuing conflict with them.

Samson again gave way to sexual sin, exposing the weakness that would increasingly shape his downfall. Rather than living with the restraint expected of one set apart for God’s service, he pursued a relationship that ignored God’s commands.

His actions revealed impulsiveness and moral compromise. Though God continued to use Samson against the Philistines, his disregard for God’s standards brought him into danger and prepared the way for the failures that followed.

When the Gazites heard that Samson was there,

The people of Gaza recognized Samson as Israel’s powerful judge and a dangerous enemy of Philistine rule. Gaza, a major Philistine city on the coastal route between Egypt and Canaan, was strongly fortified and served as an important center of Philistine power.

Jos 2:2-3 And it was reported to the king of Jericho: …

they surrounded that place and lay in wait for him all night at the city gate.

Rather than confronting Samson openly, the Gazites sealed off the city and stationed men at the gate, the main point of exit. They expected to trap him when he attempted to leave at daybreak.

Psa 36:4 Even on his bed he plots wickedness; he sets himself…

The Gazites intended to strike when Samson would be most vulnerable. Their plan reveals both their fear of him and their confidence that the city’s gates, walls, and armed men could prevent his escape.

whose name was Delilah.

Delilah became the means by which the Philistine rulers discovered the secret of Samson’s strength and brought about his capture.

The lords of the Philistines went to her and said,

The five Philistine rulers governed Gaza, Ashdod, Ashkelon, Gath, and Ekron. Their direct appeal to Delilah shows how seriously they viewed Samson, whose victories had repeatedly weakened Philistine control over Israel.

1Sa 5:8 So they carried away the ark of the God of Israel.…
1Sa 29:2 As the Philistine leaders marched out…

“Entice him and find out the source of his great strength

Delilah was asked to draw Samson into revealing the secret of his strength. The Philistines understood that his power set him apart and sought to exploit his attachment to her through deception.

and how we can overpower him to tie him up and subdue him.

Their purpose was to remove Samson as a threat and restore their dominance. They did not merely want to defeat him in battle but to capture and humiliate him.

Mrk 3:27 Indeed, no one can enter a strong man’s house…

Each ruler promised Delilah a large reward, making the total payment an enormous sum. Her willingness to pursue the offer reveals the depth of her betrayal.

Pro 17:23 A wicked man takes a covert bribe to subvert the course…
Zec 11:12-13 Then I told them, “If it seems right to you,…

So Delilah said to Samson,

Delilah, a Philistine woman loved by Samson, becomes the instrument through whom the Philistine rulers seek to defeat him. Their promised reward reveals that her interest in Samson’s strength is driven by betrayal rather than devotion.

Jdg 14:15-17 So on the fourth day they said to Samson’s wife…
Pro 7:21-23 With her great persuasion she entices him;…
Gen 39:7-10 After some time his master’s wife cast her eyes upon Joseph…

“Please tell me the source of your great strength

Samson’s unusual power comes from God and is connected to his consecration as a Nazirite. The Philistines recognize that no ordinary strength could account for his victories and seek to uncover the source of his power.

Psa 68:35 O God, You are awesome in Your sanctuary;…
1Ch 29:11-12 Yours, O LORD, is the greatness and the power…

and how you can be tied up and subdued.”

Delilah openly asks how Samson might be overcome, yet he continues to remain with her. Her request anticipates his capture by the Philistines and exposes the danger of Samson’s growing compromise with those who oppose God and Israel.

Mat 12:29 Or again, how can anyone enter a strong man’s house…
Mrk 3:27 Indeed, no one can enter a strong man’s house…
Luk 11:21-22 When a strong man, fully armed, guards his house,…

Samson told her,

Delilah’s repeated efforts to discover Samson’s secret show that her loyalty lay with the Philistine rulers, while Samson continued to remain with her despite the danger. His willingness to engage her questions reveals the growing carelessness that would lead to his capture.

Jdg 14:16-17 Then Samson’s wife came to him, weeping, and said,…
Pro 7:21-23 With her great persuasion she entices him;…
Pro 2:16-19 It will rescue you from the forbidden woman…

“If they tie me up with seven fresh bowstrings that have not been dried,

Samson gave Delilah a false answer, knowing that ordinary restraints could not overcome the strength God had given him. The seven bowstrings formed part of his deception, yet his repeated games with Delilah brought him closer to revealing what he should have guarded.

Jdg 15:13-14 “No,” they answered, “we will not kill you…”…
Mrk 5:3-4 This man had been living in the tombs and…
Luk 8:29 For Jesus had commanded the unclean spirit to come out…

I will become as weak as any other man.”

Samson understood that his strength set him apart, but he treated the matter lightly. His power came from the Lord’s calling upon his life as a Nazirite, and his eventual loss of strength would follow his persistent disregard for that calling.

Psa 102:23 He has broken my strength on the way; He has cut short…
Psa 38:10 My heart pounds, my strength fails, and even the light…
Isa 40:29-31 He gives power to the faint and increases the strength…

So the lords of the Philistines

The rulers of the five principal Philistine cities—Gaza, Ashdod, Ashkelon, Gath, and Ekron—joined in the effort to capture Samson, whose strength had repeatedly frustrated Philistine control over Israel.

brought her seven fresh bowstrings

They supplied Delilah with strong, newly prepared cords, believing they would be sufficient to restrain him.

that had not been dried,

The undried bowstrings retained their strength and flexibility.

and she tied him up with them.

Delilah acted according to her agreement with the Philistine rulers, concealing her betrayal while testing Samson’s claim about the source of his strength.

While the men were hidden in her room,

Delilah had arranged the trap in advance with Philistine men waiting nearby to seize Samson. The Philistine rulers continued to rely on deception because Samson’s strength had repeatedly frustrated their efforts to overcome him.

Her warning was the agreed signal for the hidden men to act. Delilah’s words concealed her betrayal while testing whether Samson’s strength could be restrained.

1Sa 17:8-11 And Goliath stood and shouted to the ranks of Israel,…

But he snapped the bowstrings like a strand of yarn seared by a flame.

Samson broke the fresh bowstrings without difficulty, showing that the Philistines’ plan had failed again. His strength remained under God’s control and could not be overcome by ordinary means.

Jdg 15:14 When Samson arrived in Lehi, the Philistines came out…
Psa 46:9 He makes wars to cease throughout the earth;…
Hos 1:5 And on that day I will break the bow of Israel…

So the source of his strength remained unknown.

Delilah had not yet learned the truth, and the Philistines remained unable to explain Samson’s power.

Deu 29:29 The secret things belong to the LORD our God,…
Dan 2:22 He reveals the deep and hidden things; He knows…

Then Delilah said to Samson,

Delilah continued pressing Samson for the secret of his strength while secretly working with the Philistine rulers. Her relationship with Samson exposed his willingness to remain close to those who opposed Israel and to ignore the danger surrounding him.

Pro 7:21-23 With her great persuasion she entices him;…
Pro 5:3-4 Though the lips of the forbidden woman drip honey…
Pro 2:16-19 It will rescue you from the forbidden woman…

“You have mocked me and lied to me!

Delilah spoke as though she had been wronged, though she intended to deliver Samson to his enemies. Samson had misled her three times, but his repeated return to her showed growing carelessness with the vow that set him apart for God.

Pro 26:18-19 Like a madman shooting firebrands and deadly arrows,…
Gen 29:25-26 When morning came, there was Leah! Jacob said to Laban.…
Gen 27:35-36 But Isaac replied, “Your brother came deceitfully”…

Now please tell me how you can be tied up.”

Her question revealed her purpose plainly: she wanted to know how Samson could be restrained and handed over to the Philistines. Samson’s failure to break away from her schemes moved him nearer to the loss of his strength, freedom, and calling.

Luk 8:29 For Jesus had commanded the unclean spirit to come out…
Act 21:33 The commander came up and arrested Paul,…
Mrk 3:27 Indeed, no one can enter a strong man’s house…

He replied,

Samson continued to mislead Delilah as she pressed him to reveal the secret of his strength. His answers show reckless confidence and a failure to take her intentions seriously.

Pro 15:1 A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word…
Pro 26:4-5 Do not answer a fool according to his folly,…
Mat 4:4 But Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not…”…

“If they tie me up with new ropes that have never been used,

Samson named another supposed means of restraining him, choosing strong, unused ropes as a believable explanation. Delilah had already acted on his earlier deception, yet he continued the dangerous game.

Jdg 15:13 “No,” they answered, “we will not kill you…”…
Jdg 15:14 When Samson arrived in Lehi, the Philistines came out…
Act 12:6-7 On the night before Herod was to bring him to trial,…

I will become as weak as any other man.”

Samson claimed he could be reduced to ordinary weakness, though his strength came from the Lord in connection with his consecration as a Nazirite. His words foreshadow the day when his disobedience would lead to the loss of that strength.

Psa 103:14 For He knows our frame; He is mindful that we are dust.
Isa 40:29-31 He gives power to the faint and increases the strength…
2Co 12:9-10 But He said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you…

So Delilah took new ropes,

Continuing her efforts to discover the source of Samson’s strength and deliver him to the Philistines for payment, Delilah took new ropes and bound him with them.

Pro 5:22 The iniquities of a wicked man entrap him;…

tied him up with them,

Delilah tied Samson with new ropes, testing the false answer he had given her. Samson again treated the danger lightly.

Mrk 5:3-4 This man had been living in the tombs and…
Luk 8:29 For Jesus had commanded the unclean spirit to come out…
Jer 40:1 This is the word that came to Jeremiah from the LORD…

and called out, “Samson, the Philistines are here!”

Her warning signaled the hidden attackers to seize him as soon as he was bound.

1Sa 13:5 Now the Philistines assembled to fight against Israel…
1Sa 17:10 Then the Philistine said, “I defy the ranks of Israel…
2Sa 5:17-18 When the Philistines heard that David had been anointed…

2Ki 11:2 But Jehosheba daughter of King Joram, the sister of Ahaziah…

he snapped the ropes off his arms like they were threads.

The new ropes proved as powerless as the previous bindings because Samson’s God-given strength remained with him.

Jdg 15:14 When Samson arrived in Lehi, the Philistines came out…
Jer 2:20 “For long ago you broke your yoke and tore off your chains,…
Psa 107:14 He brought them out of darkness and the shadow of death…

Then Delilah said to Samson, “You have mocked me and lied to me all along!

Delilah presses Samson after his previous answers have failed to deliver him to the Philistines. Though she speaks as one personally wronged, she is working with the Philistine rulers, who have promised her payment for discovering the source of his strength.

Pro 26:18-19 Like a madman shooting firebrands and deadly arrows,…
Psa 52:2-4 Your tongue devises destruction like a sharpened razor,…
Pro 12:19 Truthful lips endure forever, but a lying tongue…

Tell me how you can be tied up.”

Her repeated demand reveals the Philistines’ determination to capture the judge who has repeatedly frustrated their rule over Israel.

Jdg 15:12-13 But they said to him, “We have come down to arrest you…
Luk 8:29 For Jesus had commanded the unclean spirit to come out…
Act 21:33 The commander came up and arrested Paul,…

He told her, “If you weave the seven braids of my head into the web of a loom

Samson gives Delilah another false answer, but his reference to his hair moves dangerously close to the sign of his Nazirite consecration. The seven braids point to the fullness of the hair he has never cut under his vow to God. The loom also pictures the growing trap around him as Delilah patiently seeks what the Philistines need.

Jdg 13:5 For behold, you will conceive and give birth to a son.…
Num 6:5 For the entire period of his vow of separation,…
Isa 38:12 My dwelling has been picked up and removed from me…

and tighten it with a pin,

Delilah is instructed to fasten his hair into the woven fabric, making his supposed weakness depend on an ordinary household device. The detail shows how easily Samson treats a matter connected to his calling and strength.

Jdg 4:21 But as he lay sleeping from exhaustion, Heber’s wife Jael…
Zec 10:4 The cornerstone will come from Judah, the tent peg from him…
Isa 22:23 I will drive him like a peg into a firm place,…

I will become as weak as any other man.”

Samson again claims that binding his hair in this way would leave him powerless. His true strength does not reside in his hair itself, but in God’s covenantal relationship with him, represented by his Nazirite vow. His willingness to toy with that sign reveals how far he has drifted toward the loss that soon follows.

Jdg 15:14-15 When Samson arrived in Lehi, the Philistines came out…
Psa 73:26 My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is my portion…
Isa 40:29-31 He gives power to the faint and increases the strength…

So while he slept,

Samson lay vulnerable in Delilah’s house, unaware that she was working with the Philistine rulers against him. His growing trust in Delilah and willingness to remain with her placed him increasingly in danger.

1Sa 26:12 So David took the spear and water jug by Saul’s head,…
Gen 2:21 So the LORD God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep,…
Psa 127:2 In vain you rise early and stay up late,…

Delilah took the seven braids of his hair

Samson’s uncut hair marked his lifelong Nazirite consecration to God. Delilah used the visible sign of his calling in another attempt to test and restrain him, though she had not yet cut it.

Jdg 13:5 For behold, you will conceive and give birth to a son.…
Num 6:5 For the entire period of his vow of separation,…
Num 6:18 Then at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting,…

and wove them into the web.

She incorporated his braids into the threads of a loom, turning an ordinary household tool into a trap. The act showed her determination to discover the source of his strength and deliver him to the Philistines.

2Ki 23:7 He also tore down the quarters of the male shrine prostitutes…
Exo 35:35 He has filled them with skill to do all kinds of work…
Exo 26:1 You are to construct the tabernacle itself…

Then she tightened it with a pin

The loom pin secured the woven fabric in place. Delilah intended the web and pin to hold Samson long enough for the Philistines to seize him.

Jdg 4:21 But as he lay sleeping from exhaustion, Heber’s wife Jael…
Exo 38:20 All the tent pegs for the tabernacle…
Isa 22:23 I will drive him like a peg into a firm place,…

and called to him, “Samson, the Philistines are here!”

As in her earlier attempts, Philistine men were waiting nearby for her signal. Delilah’s cry was meant to alarm Samson and reveal whether the restraint could overcome him.

1Sa 4:7 The Philistines were afraid. “The gods have entered…
1Sa 13:5 Now the Philistines assembled to fight against Israel…
1Sa 17:10 Then the Philistine said, “I defy the ranks of Israel…

But he awoke from his sleep

Samson rose before the Philistines could capture him. Though he escaped again, he failed to recognize the seriousness of Delilah’s repeated betrayal.

Gen 28:16 When Jacob woke up, he said, “Surely the LORD…
Psa 3:5 I lie down and sleep; I wake again, for the LORD sustains…
Act 12:7 Suddenly an angel of the Lord appeared and a light shone…

and pulled out the pin with the loom and the web.

His God-given strength remained, and he tore free from the loom and its woven web. The incident foreshadowed the greater danger ahead as Delilah continued pressing him to reveal the truth about his strength.

Isa 38:12 My dwelling has been picked up and removed from me…
1Sa 17:7 The shaft of his spear was like a weaver’s beam,…
Isa 59:5 They hatch the eggs of vipers and weave a spider’s web.…

Delilah Learns the Secret

“How can you say, ‘I love you,’”

Delilah used Samson’s professed love to pressure him, though her own intentions were treacherous.

Mat 15:8 These people honor Me with their lips,…
Jer 12:2 You planted them, and they have taken root.…
1Jn 3:18 Little children, let us love not in word and speech…

she asked,

Having accepted money from the Philistine rulers to betray him, she continued her efforts after each failed attempt.

Luk 1:34 “How can this be,” Mary asked the angel…
Jhn 4:9 “You are a Jew,” said the woman. “How can You ask for…”…
1Ki 10:1-3 Now when the queen of Sheba heard about the fame…

Samson had deceived her three times about his strength, yet he remained with her despite the danger she posed.

Mat 26:34 “Truly I tell you,” Jesus declared, “this very night…”…
Pro 14:9 Fools mock the making of amends, but goodwill…

His strength was connected to his lifelong Nazirite consecration. Delilah’s persistence prepared the way for Samson to reveal what he should have guarded.

Psa 18:32 It is God who arms me with strength and makes my way clear.
Psa 68:35 O God, You are awesome in Your sanctuary;…
Isa 40:29 He gives power to the faint and increases the strength…

Finally, after she had pressed him daily with her words

Delilah relentlessly exploited Samson’s affection and wore down his resistance. Her actions served the Philistine rulers’ plan to discover the source of his strength and subdue Israel’s deliverer.

Pro 19:13 A foolish son is his father’s ruin, and a quarrelsome wife…

and pleaded until he was sick to death,

Samson became emotionally exhausted and surrendered the secret connected to his Nazirite calling. Though he had repeatedly escaped danger, he failed to guard the commitment God had set upon his life, leading toward his capture and humiliation.

Luk 18:5 Yet because this widow keeps pestering me,…
2Co 12:8 Three times I pleaded with the Lord to take it away from me.
Psa 107:18 They loathed all food and drew near to the gates of death.

Samson told her all that was in his heart:

After repeated pressure from Delilah, Samson finally disclosed the secret connected with his strength. His trust in her ignored the danger she had already shown and opened the way for the Philistines to destroy him.

Psa 38:10 My heart pounds, my strength fails, and even the light…
Psa 71:9 Do not discard me in my old age; do not forsake me…

and I will become as weak as any other man.”

Without God’s enabling power, Samson would have no unusual strength. Delilah used this knowledge to betray him, and Samson’s loss of strength revealed the serious cost of abandoning his calling.

Isa 40:30 Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble…
Psa 103:14 For He knows our frame; He is mindful that we are dust.

When Delilah realized that he had revealed to her all that was in his heart,

Delilah recognized that Samson had finally revealed the truth about his Nazirite consecration and the uncut hair that marked his devotion to God. His openness exposed the deepest vulnerability of the man set apart to deliver Israel from the Philistines.

Pro 20:5 The intentions of a man’s heart are deep waters…
1Sa 9:19 “I am the seer,” Samuel replied. “Go up before me”…
Psa 44:21 would not God have discovered, since He knows…

she sent this message to the lords of the Philistines:

Delilah immediately informed the Philistine rulers, whose interest in Samson was both military and political. His repeated victories had made him a serious threat to their control over Israel.

Convinced that Samson’s strength could now be taken from him, she called them to act without delay. Her message prepared the way for his capture.

1Co 4:5 Therefore judge nothing before the appointed time;…
Heb 4:13 Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight;…
Luk 8:17 For there is nothing hidden that will not be disclosed…

Then the lords of the Philistines came to her, bringing the money in their hands.

The rulers arrived with the promised payment, confirming Delilah’s betrayal for personal gain and showing how greatly they valued Samson’s defeat.

Samson’s Vengeance and Death

Now the lords of the Philistines gathered together

The Philistines were organized around five principal city-states, each governed by a lord. Their rulers joined in matters of war and public worship, and Samson’s capture called for a national celebration.

1Sa 5:8 So they carried away the ark of the God of Israel.…
1Sa 29:1-2 Now the Philistines brought all their forces together…

to offer a great sacrifice to their god Dagon.

Dagon was a leading Philistine deity, honored as the source of fertility and prosperity. The sacrifice celebrated what the Philistines believed was Dagon’s victory over the God of Israel and over Israel’s strongest judge.

1Sa 5:2-5 carried it into the temple of Dagon,…
1Ch 10:10 They put his armor in the temple of their gods…

They rejoiced and said,

Their celebration likely included a public feast and praise offered in Dagon’s temple. Samson’s long campaign against them had brought heavy losses, making his imprisonment a cause for widespread rejoicing.

Oba 1:12 But you should not gloat in that day, your brother’s day…
Psa 35:19 Let not my enemies gloat over me without cause,…

“Our god has delivered Samson our enemy into our hands.”

The Philistines credited Dagon with Samson’s defeat, viewing his capture as proof that their god had prevailed. Yet Samson’s fall did not mark the triumph of Dagon, but prepared the way for God’s final judgment against the Philistine rulers gathered in the temple.

Jdg 3:28 So they followed him down and seized the fords of the Jordan…
1Sa 23:4 Once again, David inquired of the LORD…

And when the people saw him,

“And when the people saw him” refers to the Philistines’ public celebration after Samson, blinded and captive, was brought before them. Israel’s judge had long afflicted them through his extraordinary strength and attacks on their people.

Many Philistines had fallen through Samson’s acts of judgment, including a thousand men killed with a donkey’s jawbone. Their celebration would soon turn to mourning when Samson brought down Dagon’s temple.

1Sa 4:10-11 So the Philistines fought, and Israel was defeated…

And while their hearts were merry,

As their hearts grew merry, the Philistine leaders celebrated Samson’s capture with feasting, praising Dagon, and mocking Israel’s judge.

1Sa 25:36 When Abigail returned to Nabal, there he was…
Est 1:10 On the seventh day, when the king’s heart was merry…

they said, “Call for Samson to entertain us.”

Having blinded and imprisoned him, they treated Samson as a defeated trophy. Their demand was intended to humiliate the man who had long troubled Philistine rule over Israel.

2Sa 2:14 Then Abner said to Joab, “Let us have the young men…
1Sa 16:23 And whenever the spirit from God came upon Saul…

So they called Samson out of the prison to entertain them.

Samson was brought from confinement before the assembled rulers and crowds. His public disgrace appeared to confirm the Philistines’ power and Dagon’s supposed superiority.

2Ki 25:27-30 On the twenty-seventh day of the twelfth month…
Mrk 15:16-20 Then the soldiers led Jesus away into the palace…

And they stationed him between the pillars.

Placed at the central supports of the temple, Samson stood where he could be seen by the entire gathering. The Philistines unknowingly positioned him for the judgment that would soon fall upon their leaders, their people, and their idol.

1Ki 7:21-22 Thus he set up the pillars at the portico of the temple.…
2Ch 3:17 Then he set up the pillars in front of the temple…

Samson said to the servant who held his hand,

Blinded and imprisoned by the Philistines, Samson now depends on another to guide him. His humiliation reveals the cost of abandoning God’s commands, yet God had not finished using him.

Mrk 8:23 So He took the blind man by the hand and led him…
Act 9:8 Saul got up from the ground, but when he opened his eyes…
Gen 19:16 And they led them safely out of the city,…

“Lead me where I can feel the pillars supporting the temple,

The Philistine temple, likely devoted to Dagon, was crowded with rulers and worshipers gathered to celebrate Samson’s capture. Its roof rested on central supporting pillars, making them the critical point of the structure.

1Ki 7:15-22 He cast two pillars of bronze, each eighteen cubits high…
2Ch 3:15-17 In front of the temple he made two pillars…
Jer 52:17-23 Moreover, the Chaldeans broke up the bronze pillars…

so I can lean against them.”

Samson positioned himself between the pillars in preparation for the final act God would accomplish through him. Though weakened and disgraced, he would again become an instrument of judgment against Israel’s oppressors.

Gen 47:31 “Swear to me,” Jacob said. So Joseph swore to him…
Heb 11:21 By faith Jacob, when he was dying, blessed…

Now the temple was full of men and women;

The temple of Dagon had become the center of a Philistine celebration, with the people crediting their god for Samson’s capture. Their gathering displayed confidence in Dagon and contempt for Israel’s God.

2Ki 10:21-23 Then Jehu sent word throughout Israel, and all the servants…
1Ki 8:63-64 And Solomon offered as peace offerings to the LORD…
Mrk 2:1-2 A few days later Jesus went back to Capernaum.…

all the lords of the Philistines were there,

The rulers of the Philistine cities had assembled for an occasion of national importance. Samson’s defeat appeared to secure their power over Israel and remove their most feared adversary.

1Sa 6:4 “What guilt offering should we send back to Him?”…
1Sa 29:6-7 So Achish summoned David and told him…

and about three thousand men and women were on the roof

The large crowd, including those gathered on the roof, reveals the scale of the celebration and the temple’s public design. They had come to witness Samson’s humiliation and to share in the Philistines’ apparent victory.

Mrk 2:4 They uncovered the roof above Him, made an opening…
Luk 5:19 but they could not find a way through the crowd.…

watching Samson entertain them.

Samson, once Israel’s deliverer, was made an object of ridicule before his enemies. Yet the Philistines’ triumph would soon turn to judgment as God used Samson’s final act to strike those who had gathered against Israel.

1Co 4:9 For it seems to me that God has displayed us apostles…
Psa 22:7-8 All who see me mock me; they sneer and shake their heads:…
Lam 3:14-15 I am a laughingstock to all my people; they mock me in song…

Then Samson called out to the LORD:

Blinded, imprisoned, and publicly humiliated, Samson finally turns to the God whose strength he had repeatedly presumed upon. His appeal shows that he understands his deliverance can come only from the LORD.

Jon 2:2 “In my distress I called to the LORD, and He answered me.”…
Psa 18:6 In my distress I called upon the LORD; I cried…
Psa 50:15 “Call upon Me in the day of trouble; I will deliver you”…

“O Lord GOD, please remember me.

Samson asks God to look upon his suffering and act on his behalf. Addressing Him as Lord GOD acknowledges God’s authority over Samson’s life and over Israel’s enemies.

Neh 13:14 Remember me for this, O my God, and do not blot out…
Luk 23:42 Then he said, “Jesus, remember me when You come”…
1Sa 1:11 And she made a vow, saying, “O LORD of Hosts, …

Strengthen me, O God, just once more,

Having lost the supernatural strength associated with his Nazirite calling, Samson asks God to restore power for one final act. His request recognizes that strength does not arise from himself but is given by God.

Psa 119:28 My soul melts with sorrow; strengthen me…
Isa 41:10 Do not fear, for I am with you; do not be afraid…
Psa 68:35 O God, You are awesome in Your sanctuary;…

so that with one vengeful blow I may pay back the Philistines for my two eyes.”

Samson seeks repayment for the cruelty the Philistines inflicted on him, yet his final act also fulfills his God-given role in striking Israel’s oppressors. His death brings judgment upon the Philistine leaders gathered in Dagon’s temple and begins the deliverance he was appointed to accomplish.

Lev 24:20 fracture for fracture, eye for eye, tooth for tooth.…
2Sa 5:19 So David inquired of the LORD, “Should I go up…
Psa 94:1 O LORD, God of vengeance, O God of vengeance, shine forth.

And Samson reached out for the two central pillars supporting the temple.

The Philistines had gathered in Dagon’s temple to celebrate Samson’s capture and to honor their god. The building was supported by two central pillars, and Samson positioned himself where he could bring down the crowded structure. Having been humiliated and blinded, he now stood before his enemies as the instrument of God’s judgment on the Philistines.

1Ki 7:15-22 He cast two pillars of bronze, each eighteen cubits high…
2Ch 3:15-17 In front of the temple he made two pillars…
Jer 52:17-23 Moreover, the Chaldeans broke up the bronze pillars…

Bracing himself against them with his right hand on one pillar and his left hand on the other,

Samson prepared to use the strength God would give him one final time. His stance placed his full weight and force against the pillars, setting the stage for the temple’s collapse and the destruction of the Philistine rulers and people assembled inside.

Samson said, “Let me die with the Philistines.”

Blinded, imprisoned, and brought out for public humiliation, Samson asked God for strength one final time. His death brought judgment upon Israel’s oppressors and ended his own troubled judgeship.

1Sa 31:4-6 Then Saul said to his armor-bearer, “Draw your sword…

Jhn 15:13 Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life…

Then he pushed with all his might,

God restored the strength Samson had lost after his disobedience. Though Samson had repeatedly acted rashly, the Lord used him to carry out the task announced before his birth: to begin delivering Israel from Philistine rule.

and the temple fell on the lords and all the people in it.

The collapse of Dagon’s temple struck at the Philistine leaders gathered for a celebration of their god’s supposed victory over Samson and over Israel’s God. Their death weakened Philistine authority and exposed the helplessness of their idol.

1Sa 5:1-4 After the Philistines had captured the ark of God,…
1Sa 5:9-12 But after they had moved the ark to Gath, the LORD’s hand…

So in his death he killed more than he had killed in his life.

Samson’s final act inflicted the greatest defeat of his life upon the Philistines. God accomplished His purpose through a flawed but chosen servant, bringing deliverance to Israel through judgment on its enemies.

Then Samson’s brothers and his father’s family came down,
