Berean Study Bible Salvation for ZionGod summons His faithful people to give careful attention to His words, preparing them for assurance rooted in His past dealings with Israel. Psa 34:11 Come, children, listen to me; I will teach you… you who pursue righteousness, They are those who desire to live faithfully under God’s covenant and to follow His commands. 2Ti 2:22 Flee from youthful passions and pursue righteousness… you who seek the LORD: Their pursuit of righteousness is joined to seeking the Lord Himself in worship, obedience, and dependence. 2Ch 15:2 So he went out to meet Asa and said to him,… Look to the rock from which you were cut, Israel is called to remember Abraham, from whom God began the nation despite his age and apparent inability to produce descendants. Rom 4:17-18 As it is written: “I have made you a father of many nations”… and to the quarry from which you were hewn. The image includes Sarah, through whom God fulfilled His promise and formed Israel as His covenant people. Gen 21:1-3 Now the LORD attended to Sarah as He had said… Look to Abraham your father, Abraham was the patriarch from whom Israel descended. God called him from his homeland and promised to make of him a great nation. Though he began without land or an heir, he trusted the Lord’s covenant and followed His call. Isa 41:8-9 But you, O Israel, My servant, Jacob, whom I have chosen,… and to Sarah who gave you birth. Sarah shared in the promise as the mother of Isaac. Though she had long been barren, God enabled her to bear the promised son in her old age, showing that Israel’s existence rested on God’s power and faithfulness. Gen 21:1-3 Now the LORD attended to Sarah as He had said… When I called him, he was but one; Abraham stood alone when God chose him. Israel’s beginnings were not the result of human strength, numbers, or status, but of God’s gracious purpose. Gen 12:1-3 Then the LORD said to Abram, “Leave your country… then I blessed him and multiplied him. The Lord fulfilled His promise by giving Abraham Isaac, multiplying his descendants, and forming the nation of Israel. Their history testified that God accomplishes what He has promised. Gen 22:17 I will surely bless you, and I will multiply… For the LORD will comfort Zion The LORD promises to restore Jerusalem and His covenant people after their time of judgment and desolation. Zion, once devastated and bereft, will again know His favor. Isa 40:1 “Comfort, comfort My people,” says your God. and will look with compassion on all her ruins; Jerusalem’s ruined places recall the destruction brought by foreign invasion and exile. The Lord sees the full extent of her loss and will not leave her in devastation. Psa 102:13-14 You will rise up and have compassion on Zion,… He will make her wilderness like Eden Areas marked by barrenness will be transformed into places of life, fruitfulness, and peace. The restoration will reflect the abundance God intended for His creation. Ezk 36:35 Then they will say, ‘This land that was desolate… and her desert like the garden of the LORD. What human effort cannot restore, God will renew by His power. Zion’s recovery will display His presence, blessing, and faithfulness to His promises. Isa 58:11 The LORD will always guide you; He will satisfy you… Joy and gladness will be found in her, Mourning will give way to celebration as the restored city rejoices in the Lord’s deliverance. Jer 31:13 Then the maidens will rejoice with dancing,… thanksgiving and melodious song. Worship will rise from a people who recognize that their restoration has come from the hand of God. Jer 30:19 Thanksgiving will proceed from them, a sound of celebration.… Pay attention to Me, My people, and listen to Me, My nation; God summons His covenant people to hear Him above every competing voice. Though Israel had experienced judgment and exile, He still calls them My people and My nation, affirming His covenant purposes for them. Psa 50:7 Hear, O My people, and I will speak, O Israel,… for a law will go out from Me, God will send forth His instruction and righteous rule, revealing His will beyond Israel’s borders. His truth will not remain confined to one land or generation. Isa 2:3 And many peoples will come and say: “Come, let us go up… and My justice will become a light to the nations; The nations will receive the light of God’s righteous judgment, guidance, and salvation. Israel’s God will be known as the rightful Judge and Redeemer of all peoples. Isa 42:1 Here is My Servant, whom I uphold, My Chosen One,… I will bring it about quickly. What God has decreed will be fulfilled at the appointed time. His promises move forward according to His sovereign purpose and will not fail. Rom 9:28 For the Lord will carry out His sentence on the earth… My righteousness draws near, God’s faithful action was about to be revealed in history, fulfilling His covenant promises to restore and vindicate His people. His righteousness includes both His perfect character and His just rule over the earth. Isa 46:13 I am bringing My righteousness near; it is not far away… My salvation is on the way, The Lord promised real deliverance to those who trusted Him. Though Israel had known exile, oppression, and judgment, God had not abandoned His purpose to save. This deliverance ultimately reaches beyond temporal rescue to freedom from sin through the Messiah. Isa 62:11 Behold, the LORD has proclaimed to the ends of the earth… and My arms will bring justice to the nations. God Himself would act with irresistible power to establish righteous judgment among all peoples. His salvation and justice were never limited to Israel alone but were intended to reach the nations. Isa 42:1 Here is My Servant, whom I uphold, My Chosen One,… The islands will look for Me Distant coastlands and peoples beyond Israel would turn their attention toward the God of Israel. The promise anticipates the gathering of Gentile nations under His rule. Isa 60:9 Surely the islands will wait for Me, with the ships of… and wait in hope for My arm. Those far from Israel would place their expectation in God’s power to save and govern. Their hope rests not in human strength but in the Lord’s coming intervention. Isa 40:10 Behold, the Lord GOD comes with might,… Lift up your eyes to the heavens, and look at the earth below; Creation testifies to the greatness of God, yet it is not eternal. The heavens and earth, though immense and glorious, remain under His authority. Isa 40:26 Lift up your eyes on high: Who created all these?… for the heavens will vanish like smoke, The visible order will not endure forever. What appears stable will pass away according to God’s purpose. 2Pe 3:10 But the Day of the Lord will come like a thief.… the earth will wear out like a garment, The world bears the effects of decay and awaits renewal. Its present form is temporary, unlike the kingdom God establishes. Psa 102:25-26 In the beginning You laid the foundations of the earth… and its people will die like gnats. Human life is brief and fragile. No earthly strength, achievement, or civilization can overcome mortality. Psa 144:4 Man is like a breath; his days are like a passing shadow. But My salvation will last forever, God’s deliverance stands in sharp contrast to the passing world. His promise reaches its fulfillment in the eternal redemption provided through Christ. Isa 45:17 But Israel will be saved by the LORD… and My righteousness will never fail. God’s justice, faithfulness, and saving purpose do not weaken or change. What He has promised His people will endure when all else passes away. Psa 111:3 Splendid and majestic is His work; His righteousness… Listen to Me, The Lord addresses His faithful people with the authority of their covenant God, preparing them to receive His assurance amid opposition. Isa 46:3-4 Listen to Me, O house of Jacob, all the remnant… you who know what is right, He speaks to those in Israel who recognize His righteous standards and remain loyal to Him despite the nation’s widespread unbelief. Pro 2:9 Then you will discern righteousness and justice… you people with My law in your hearts: Their obedience is more than outward conformity; God’s instruction has shaped their convictions and conduct. Jer 31:33 “But this is the covenant I will make”… Do not fear the scorn of men; The faithful remnant faced contempt from those who rejected the Lord and trusted in human power. Pro 29:25 The fear of man is a snare, but whoever trusts in the LORD… do not be broken by their insults. Human ridicule is temporary, but God’s righteousness and salvation endure. Mat 5:11-12 Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you… For the moth will devour them like a garment, Human strength, wealth, and hostility toward God’s people are as vulnerable as clothing left to decay. What appears enduring can be quietly consumed and brought to nothing. Job 13:28 So man wastes away like something rotten… and the worm will eat them like wool. The repetition intensifies the certainty of judgment. Those who set themselves against the Lord will not remain secure, however powerful they seem for a time. Job 24:20 The womb forgets them; the worm feeds on them;… But My righteousness will last forever, God’s justice and faithfulness do not weaken, change, or perish. His purposes stand when every human power has passed away. Psa 119:142 Your righteousness is everlasting and Your law is true. My salvation through all generations.” The deliverance God provides remains available throughout history. His promise reaches beyond Judah’s immediate enemies and finds its fullest expression in the lasting salvation He accomplishes for His people. Isa 45:17 But Israel will be saved by the LORD… Awake, awake, put on strength, O arm of the LORD. Israel appeals to the LORD to display His saving power openly, as He had done when He delivered His people from bondage. The urgent repetition reflects their need for God’s intervention amid present distress. Isa 52:1 Awake, awake, clothe yourself with strength, O Zion!… Wake up as in days past, as in generations of old. The prayer looks back to the LORD’s mighty acts in Israel’s history. His past deliverance gave the nation confidence that He remained able to save them again. Deu 32:7 Remember the days of old; consider the years long past… Was it not You who cut Rahab to pieces, who pierced through the dragon? Rahab represents Egypt, the proud power that oppressed Israel. The dragon imagery recalls Pharaoh and the forces God defeated at the Exodus, declaring that no earthly ruler or hostile power can withstand the LORD. Psa 89:10 You crushed Rahab like a carcass; You scattered… Was it not You who dried up the sea, God recalls the Exodus, when He divided the Red Sea and delivered Israel from Pharaoh’s pursuing army. What appeared to be an impassable barrier became the means of Israel’s escape, displaying the Lord’s power over creation and His faithfulness to His covenant people. Exo 14:21-22 Then Moses stretched out his hand over the sea,… the waters of the great deep, The sea, with its immense and dangerous depths, represented a force no human power could overcome. Yet the God who ordered the waters at creation ruled them completely and used them for the salvation of His people and the judgment of their enemies. Gen 7:11 In the six hundredth year of Noah’s life, … who made a road in the depths of the sea Israel crossed on dry ground through the place where the waters had stood. God did not merely remove an obstacle; He provided a definite path through it, leading His people out of slavery and toward the land He had promised. Psa 77:19 Your path led through the sea, Your way… for the redeemed to cross over? The redeemed were the Israelites whom God brought out of Egypt by His mighty hand. Their passage through the sea marked their deliverance from bondage and separated them from the former life they had known under Pharaoh’s rule. Exo 15:13 With loving devotion You will lead the people… So the redeemed of the LORD will return Those delivered by the LORD from exile will come back to Jerusalem. Their return rests on God’s faithfulness to restore His people after judgment. Isa 35:10 So the redeemed of the LORD will return… and enter Zion with singing, They will approach Zion, the city of God’s dwelling, not as defeated captives but as worshipers celebrating their restoration. Jer 31:12 They will come and shout for joy on the heights of Zion… crowned with everlasting joy. Joy will mark them openly and permanently, replacing the disgrace and grief of exile with the honor of God’s salvation. Pro 4:9 She will set a garland of grace on your head;… Gladness and joy will overtake them, Their restored life will be so complete that joy will surpass the suffering they had known. Est 8:16-17 For the Jews it was a time of light and gladness,… and sorrow and sighing will flee. Mourning, hardship, and the anguish of displacement will end as God fulfills His promise to redeem and restore His people. Isa 25:8 He will swallow up death forever. The Lord GOD… “I, even I, am He who comforts you. God alone was Israel’s true source of comfort amid exile, oppression, and uncertainty. His repeated self-reference stresses His personal faithfulness to the covenant people and His power to restore them. Isa 66:13 As a mother comforts her son, so will I comfort you,… Why should you be afraid of mortal man, Israel had faced the military power of Assyria and Babylon, yet even the strongest rulers remained subject to God’s authority. Fear of human oppressors overlooked the Lord’s sovereign care and coming deliverance. Mat 10:28-31 Do not be afraid of those who kill the body… of a son of man who withers like grass? Human life, strength, and political power are temporary. Nations that appeared invincible would pass away, while God’s promises to His people would stand. 1Pe 1:24-25 All flesh is like grass, and all its glory… But you have forgotten the LORD, your Maker, Israel had neglected the God who created them, formed them as a people, and bound Himself to them by covenant. Their fear revealed how easily they lost sight of His care and authority. Hos 8:14 Israel has forgotten his Maker and built palaces;… who stretched out the heavens and laid the foundations of the earth. The Creator of heaven and earth possesses power far beyond any empire or ruler. Babylon’s strength, though formidable, stood under the rule of the God who established the world. Isa 48:13 Surely My own hand founded the earth… You live in terror all day long because of the fury of the oppressor who is bent on destruction. The people faced the real threat of foreign oppression and exile, with enemies intent on crushing their nation. Yet their continual fear showed that they were measuring their circumstances more than the power of the LORD. Deu 28:65-67 Among those nations you will find no repose,… But where is the fury of the oppressor? The oppressor’s wrath would not endure. God would bring down the power that afflicted His people, while His own purposes and promises would remain. Isa 14:4 you will sing this song of contempt against the king… The captive will soon be freed; God promises that His people will not remain under oppression indefinitely. Though many would experience exile and hardship, He would bring release from their enemies and restore them according to His covenant mercy. Isa 49:9 to the prisoners, ‘Come out,’ and to those in darkness…… he will not die in the dungeon, The prisoner’s condition appears hopeless, yet God preserves him from death. The pit of captivity will not have the final word, because the Lord remains able to rescue those brought low. Jer 38:13 and they pulled him up with the ropes and lifted him… and his bread will not be lacking. Even in distress, God provides what is necessary for life. His care for the captive recalls His faithful provision for Israel throughout the wilderness and exile. Pro 10:3 The LORD does not let the righteous go hungry,… For I am the LORD your God God identifies Himself as Israel’s covenant Lord, the One who redeemed the nation and remains personally committed to His people. Even in exile, Israel’s God had not changed or surrendered His authority. Exo 20:2 I am the LORD your God, who brought you out… who stirs up the sea so that its waves roar— The God of Israel commands the forces of creation, including the sea and its violent waves. His control over the waters recalls His deliverance of Israel through the Red Sea and shows that no power of nature or nation lies beyond His rule. Jer 31:35 Thus says the LORD, who gives the sun for light by day… the LORD of Hosts is His name. The LORD rules over the armies of heaven and all earthly powers. His name declares His supreme authority and His ability to judge Israel’s enemies and preserve His people. Jer 10:16 The Portion of Jacob is not like these, for He is… I have put My words in your mouth, God commissions His servant to speak His revealed message with divine authority. Like Moses and Jeremiah, the messenger is not to rely on personal wisdom but to faithfully proclaim what God has given. Deu 18:18 I will raise up for them a prophet like you… and covered you with the shadow of My hand, God’s hand signifies His preserving power and personal care. Though the servant bears a weighty commission, he remains under the Lord’s protection and direction. Isa 49:2 He made My mouth like a sharp sword; He hid Me… to establish the heavens, The One who created and upholds the heavens also advances His purposes through His word. God’s redemptive work is as certain as His sovereign rule over all creation. Pro 3:19 The LORD founded the earth by wisdom and established the… to found the earth, The Lord who laid the earth’s foundations governs history and will accomplish the restoration He has promised. Creation itself stands as evidence of His power and faithfulness. Psa 102:25 In the beginning You laid the foundations of the earth… and to say to Zion, ‘You are My people.’” Zion represents Jerusalem and the covenant people of Israel. God’s declaration confirms that He has not abandoned them; despite judgment and exile, He remains their God and will restore them according to His covenant promises. Hos 2:23 And I will sow her as My own in the land…
God’s Fury RemovedGod summons Jerusalem from the helplessness produced by judgment and exile. Isa 52:1 Awake, awake, clothe yourself with strength, O Zion!… Rise up, O Jerusalem, The city represents the covenant people, called to move from humiliation toward the restoration God has promised. Isa 52:2 Shake off your dust! Rise up and sit on your throne… you who have drunk from the hand of the LORD the cup of His fury; Jerusalem’s suffering came under God’s righteous judgment for persistent rebellion, fulfilled in the devastation of the city and the Babylonian exile. Jer 25:15-17 This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, said to me:… you who have drained the goblet to the dregs— The people had endured the full severity of that judgment, leaving no further portion of wrath to be poured out in the same way. Psa 75:8 For a cup is in the hand of the LORD, full of foaming wine… the cup that makes men stagger. God’s discipline had brought the nation to confusion, weakness, and ruin, yet the surrounding passage looks ahead to His mercy and the removal of this cup from Jerusalem. Zec 12:2 Behold, I will make Jerusalem a cup of drunkenness… Among all the sons she bore, Jerusalem is pictured as a mother whose children are the people she nurtured within the covenant community. Though the city had produced kings, priests, prophets, and citizens, none could rescue her when God’s judgment fell. Isa 49:21 Then you will say in your heart, ‘Who has begotten these… there is no one to guide her; Her leaders were unable to provide wisdom, protection, or deliverance. The city’s ruin exposed the failure of human strength and leadership after the nation’s rebellion against the Lord. 1Ki 22:17 So Micaiah declared: “I saw all Israel… among all the sons she brought up, The repetition intensifies Jerusalem’s abandonment. Those raised within a city marked by the temple, the law, and the history of God’s dealings with Israel did not remain faithful or become able to restore her. Isa 1:2 Listen, O heavens, and give ear, O earth… there is no one to take her hand. No son stood ready to steady, defend, or lead Jerusalem through her devastation. Her only hope was the Lord, who would later comfort Zion, remove the cup of wrath, and restore His people. Isa 42:6 I, the LORD, have called you for a righteous purpose,… These pairs have befallen you: Judah had endured the full weight of judgment for persistent rebellion against the Lord. The calamities were not isolated losses but a comprehensive collapse affecting the nation’s security, worship, and daily life. Isa 47:9 These two things will overtake you in a moment,… devastation and destruction, Jerusalem and Judah lay ruined through invasion, siege, and exile. The Babylonian destruction of Jerusalem and the Temple exposed the consequences of rejecting God’s covenant. Jer 4:20 Disaster after disaster is proclaimed… famine and sword. Starvation accompanied the siege as food supplies failed, while the sword brought death through warfare and conquest. These disasters left the people weakened, scattered, and without earthly strength. Ezk 5:12 A third of your people will die by plague… Who will grieve for you? The question portrays Jerusalem as abandoned, with no nation able or willing to rescue her from the judgment she faced. Nam 3:7 Then all who see you will recoil from you… Who can comfort you? Human help could not restore what had been lost. Only the Lord, who had allowed the judgment, could bring comfort, renewal, and eventual redemption to His people. Lam 2:13 What can I say for you? To what can I compare you?… Your sons have fainted; Jerusalem’s children, representing her people, have collapsed under the weight of judgment. Their strength is gone, and they are unable to resist the calamity that has come upon the city. Isa 40:30 Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble… they lie at the head of every street, Their suffering is visible throughout Jerusalem. Those who should have defended and sustained the city are overcome in its public places, revealing the full extent of its ruin. Lam 2:19 Arise, cry out in the night from the first watch… like an antelope in a net. Like a swift animal trapped with no means of escape, the people are helpless before the consequences of God’s judgment and the power of their enemies. Pro 6:5 Free yourself, like a gazelle from the hand of the hunter…… They are full of the wrath of the LORD, The devastation is not merely the result of military defeat but the outworking of the Lord’s righteous judgment against Israel’s rebellion. They have drunk deeply from the cup of His wrath. Lam 4:11 The LORD has exhausted His wrath; He has kindled a fire… the rebuke of your God. God’s rebuke exposes their sin and brings corrective, restorative discipline upon His covenant people. Yet the surrounding promise is that His judgment will not be the final word, for He will comfort and restore Zion. Psa 39:11 You discipline and correct a man for his iniquity,… Therefore now hear this, God turns directly to Jerusalem after describing her suffering under His judgment and prepares to announce her deliverance. Amo 5:1 Hear this word, O house of Israel, this lamentation… you afflicted one, Jerusalem had endured devastation, loss, and exile because of her sin, yet she remained the object of God’s covenant mercy. Isa 54:11 “O afflicted city, lashed by storms, without solace,… drunken, but not with wine. Her confusion and helplessness came from drinking the cup of God’s wrath, not from literal wine; the judgment had left the city overwhelmed and unable to recover by her own strength. Isa 29:9 Stop and be astonished; blind yourselves and be sightless;… Thus says your Lord, the LORD, even your God, who defends His people: The sovereign God of Israel speaks as Zion’s covenant Lord and advocate. Though His people had endured judgment for their sin, He had not abandoned them and would act on their behalf. Isa 49:25 Indeed, this is what the LORD says: “Even the captives… “See, I have removed from your hand the cup of staggering. The suffering symbolized by the cup had brought Jerusalem low under God’s discipline. Its removal marks the end of that appointed season of judgment and the beginning of restoration. Jer 25:15-17 This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, said to me:… From that goblet, the cup of My fury, you will never drink again. God promises that His wrath will not remain upon His restored people. The judgment that humbled Zion would be turned away, and those who had oppressed her would face the consequences of their own cruelty. Psa 75:8 For a cup is in the hand of the LORD, full of foaming wine… I will place it in the hands of your tormentors, The cup of God’s wrath, which Judah had endured because of sin, would be given to the nations that had afflicted her. Babylon, though used by God to discipline His people, would not escape judgment for its cruelty and pride. Ezk 39:23 And the nations will know that the house of Israel… who told you: ‘Lie down, so we can walk over you,’ Judah’s enemies had treated the defeated people with deliberate humiliation, portraying them as helpless captives beneath the feet of their conquerors. Dan 7:23 This is what he said: ‘The fourth beast is a fourth kingdom… so that you made your back like the ground, The image conveys complete submission under oppression. God’s people had been brought low, bearing the physical and emotional consequences of defeat, exile, and shame. Psa 129:3 The plowmen plowed over my back; they made their furrows… like a street to be traversed.” Their enemies had regarded them as something to be used and disregarded. Yet the Lord’s promise declares that such degradation would not be permanent; He would judge the oppressors and restore His people. Isa 10:6 I will send him against a godless nation;… This is a draft of the Berean Study Bible. Please send all comments and recommendations to bereanstudybible@aol.com. Bible Hub |
