Ezekiel 39
Berean Study Bible

The Slaughter of Gog’s Armies

“As for you, O son of man,

Ezekiel is addressed in his human weakness and appointed role as God’s messenger, standing before the nations to announce the Lord’s judgment.

Ezk 2:1 “Son of man,” He said to me, “stand up on your feet”…
Ezk 3:17 Son of man, I have made you a watchman for the house…
Ezk 4:1 Now you, son of man, take a brick, place it before…

prophesy against Gog

Gog will lead a future coalition hostile to Israel, gathering forces from distant lands in a final attempt to invade the restored people of God.

Ezk 38:2 “Son of man, set your face against Gog of the land of Magog”…
Ezk 38:3 This is what the Lord GOD says: Behold, I am against you…
Rev 20:8 and will go out to deceive the nations…

and declare that this is what the Lord GOD says:

The coming judgment proceeds from the sovereign Lord, whose purpose governs the nations and cannot be resisted.

Ezk 6:3 O mountains of Israel, hear the word of the Lord GOD!…
Ezk 13:8 Therefore this is what the Lord GOD says…
Ezk 14:4 Therefore speak to them and tell them that…

Behold, I am against you, O Gog,

Gog’s campaign will bring him into direct opposition to God Himself. Though he intends violence and plunder, the Lord will turn his assault into the occasion of his defeat.

Ezk 29:3 Speak to him and tell him that this is what the Lord GOD…
Ezk 26:3 therefore this is what the Lord GOD says: ‘Behold, O Tyre,…
Ezk 28:22 Behold, I am against you, O Sidon, and I will be glorified…

chief prince of Meshech and Tubal.

Meshech and Tubal were ancient peoples associated with regions of Asia Minor. Their inclusion identifies Gog as the ruler of real nations and portrays the broad international scope of the invasion.

Ezk 27:13 Javan, Tubal, and Meshech were your merchants.…
Ezk 32:26 Meshech and Tubal are there with all their multitudes…

I will turn you around,

God will direct Gog’s military movement according to His own purpose, showing that the leader and his coalition remain under divine authority.

Gog will advance with determination, yet his campaign will unfold within God’s sovereign plan and lead to the judgment appointed for him.

Jer 6:22 This is what the LORD says: “Behold, an army…

and send you against the mountains of Israel.

The attack will reach the central land of Israel, but Gog’s assault against God’s restored people will end in his own defeat.

Ezk 38:8 After a long time you will be summoned. In the latter years…
Ezk 38:16 You will advance against My people Israel…
Ezk 38:21 And I will summon a sword against Gog on all My mountains,…

Then I will strike the bow from your left hand

God will personally disarm Gog and the invading coalition assembled against Israel. The bow represents their military strength and readiness for war, but their weapons will prove useless before the Lord’s judgment. Gog’s campaign will not fail because of Israel’s superior force, but because God will overthrow those who come against His land and people.

Psa 46:9 He makes wars to cease throughout the earth;…
Hos 1:5 And on that day I will break the bow of Israel…
Zec 9:10 And I will cut off the chariot from Ephraim…

and dash down the arrows from your right hand.

The invading armies will be unable to carry out their intended attack. Their arrows, prepared for battle, will be cast down, showing that God has removed their power to harm Israel. The destruction of their weapons anticipates the complete defeat of Gog and confirms that no human alliance can withstand God’s sovereign purpose.

Psa 76:3 There He shattered the flaming arrows, the shield…
Psa 58:7 May they vanish like water that runs off;…
Ezk 30:21 Son of man, I have broken the arm of Pharaoh king of Egypt.…

On the mountains of Israel you will fall—

Gog’s invasion will end on the land he intended to plunder. Israel’s mountains, long tied to the nation’s covenant history, will become the place where God openly destroys the hostile army.

Ezk 38:8 After a long time you will be summoned. In the latter years…
Isa 14:25 I will break Assyria in My land; I will trample him…
Ezk 35:8 I will fill its mountains with the slain;…

you and all your troops and the nations with you.

The judgment will reach Gog’s entire coalition. No contingent, ruler, or allied force will escape, showing that the attack against Israel is ultimately an attack against the God who has claimed and preserved His people.

Ezk 38:15 And you will come from your place out of the far north…
Ezk 38:5 Persia, Cush, and Put will accompany them…
Jol 3:2 I will gather all the nations and bring them down…

I will give you as food to every kind of ravenous bird and wild beast.

The slain invaders will remain unburied, exposed to scavenging birds and animals. Such a fate marks complete military defeat and public disgrace, revealing the finality of God’s judgment on Gog and the nations that follow him.

Ezk 32:4-6 I will abandon you on the land and hurl you…
Ezk 29:5 I will leave you in the desert, you and all the fish…
Jer 7:33 The corpses of this people will become food for the birds…

You will fall in the open field,

Gog’s armies will be destroyed in a place of exposure, unable to escape or find protection. Their bodies will remain on the battlefield, marking the completeness of God’s judgment and the shame of their defeat.

Ezk 29:5 I will leave you in the desert, you and all the fish…
Ezk 32:4-5 I will abandon you on the land and hurl you…
Jer 9:22 Declare that this is what the LORD says: “The corpses of men…

for I have spoken,

declares the Lord GOD.

The covenant God of Israel speaks with absolute authority over nations and history. His judgment against Gog will confirm His sovereignty and fulfill His stated purpose.

Ezk 5:11 Therefore as surely as I live, declares the Lord GOD,…
Ezk 20:3 Son of man, speak to the elders of Israel…
Amo 3:13 Hear and testify against the house of Jacob,…

I will send fire on Magog

God will judge Magog, the land associated with Gog and the nations gathered against Israel. The fire portrays His direct and decisive destruction of those who oppose His purposes.

Ezk 38:22 I will execute judgment upon him with plague and bloodshed.…
Rev 20:9 And they marched across the broad expanse of the earth…
Isa 66:15-16 For behold, the LORD will come with fire—…

and on those who dwell securely in the coastlands,

Ezk 38:11 You will say, ‘I will go up against a land…
Jer 49:31 Rise up, advance against a nation at ease…
Jer 25:22 all the kings of Tyre and Sidon; the kings of the coastlands…

and they will know that I am the LORD.

The defeat of Gog and the judgment of the nations will openly display the Lord’s sovereignty. Those who have resisted Him will recognize that He alone rules over Israel and all the earth.

Ezk 38:23 I will magnify and sanctify Myself, and I will reveal Myself…
Exo 7:5 And the Egyptians will know that I am the LORD,…
Ezk 36:23 I will show the holiness of My great name,…

So I will make My holy name known among My people Israel

After the defeat of Gog, the Lord will openly vindicate His holiness before Israel. Their history of idolatry, rebellion, and exile had brought dishonor upon His name among the nations, but He will restore His people and renew their awareness of His covenant God.

Lev 22:32 You must not profane My holy name. I must be acknowledged…
Exo 6:7 I will take you as My own people, and I will be your God.…
Exo 6:3 I appeared to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob…

and will no longer allow it to be profaned.

Israel’s unfaithfulness had treated the Lord’s name with contempt and gave surrounding nations reason to question His power and faithfulness. God will act decisively to end this reproach through judgment, cleansing, and restoration.

Ezk 20:22 But I withheld My hand and acted for the sake of My name…
Ezk 20:39 And as for you, O house of Israel, this is what the Lord GOD…
Ezk 36:23 I will show the holiness of My great name,…

the Holy One in Israel.

The Lord remains distinct from every false god and wholly righteous in His dealings with Israel and the nations. Though Israel had been scattered because of sin, God’s presence among them will again display His holiness and covenant faithfulness.

Isa 12:6 Cry out and sing, O citizen of Zion, for great among you…
Isa 41:14 Do not fear, O Jacob, you worm, O few men of Israel…
Isa 43:3 For I am the LORD your God, the Holy One of Israel,…

Yes, it is coming, and it will surely happen,

God confirms that the judgment of Gog will occur exactly as foretold. The invading coalition will be destroyed when it comes against restored Israel, demonstrating that no nation or ruler can overturn God’s purposes.

Isa 46:11 I summon a bird of prey from the east, a man for My purpose…
Num 23:19 God is not a man, that He should lie, or a son of man,…

declares the Lord GOD.

The announcement rests on God’s own authority. He rules over the nations, directs history, and carries out His covenant purposes for Israel.

Ezk 12:25 I, the LORD, will speak whatever word I speak…
Ezk 12:28 Therefore tell them that this is what the Lord GOD says:…
Jer 1:12 “You have observed correctly,” said the LORD,…

This is the day of which I have spoken.

The promised day is the time when God openly judges Gog and vindicates His name before Israel and the surrounding nations. It anticipates God’s final triumph over those who oppose Him.

kindle fires, and burn up the weapons—

The weapons of the defeated army will become fuel, displaying the completeness of God’s judgment and the magnitude of the invading force. What had been intended for Israel’s destruction will serve the needs of Israel’s people.

Isa 9:5 For every trampling boot of battle and every garment…
Ezk 24:10 Pile on the logs and kindle the fire;…

Psa 46:9 He makes wars to cease throughout the earth;…
Psa 76:3 There He shattered the flaming arrows, the shield…
Psa 64:3 who sharpen their tongues like swords and aim…

For seven years they will use them for fuel.

The seven-year period is presented as a literal measure of the vast quantity of weapons left behind. Israel’s prolonged use of them for fuel underscores the decisive victory and the security that follows.

Ezk 15:4-6 No, it is cast into the fire for fuel. The fire…
Isa 44:15-17 It serves as fuel for man. He takes some of it…
Mal 4:1 “For behold, the day is coming, burning like a furnace,”…

They will not gather wood from the countryside or cut it from the forests,

After the destruction of Gog’s forces, Israel will have such an abundance of captured weapons that ordinary wood gathering will be unnecessary. The land will be secure enough for the people to benefit from the aftermath of the invasion rather than fear another attack.

Deu 20:19-20 When you lay siege to a city for an extended time…
Isa 44:14-17 He cuts down cedars or retrieves a cypress or oak.…

for they will use the weapons for fuel.

The wooden parts of bows, arrows, shields, spears, and other military equipment will provide fuel for seven years. The weapons intended for Israel’s destruction will become a source of provision, demonstrating the completeness of God’s victory over the invading armies.

Isa 9:5 For every trampling boot of battle and every garment…
Psa 46:9 He makes wars to cease throughout the earth;…

They will loot those who looted them and plunder those who plundered them,

Those who came to seize Israel’s wealth will leave their own possessions behind. Israel’s recovery of the enemy’s goods reverses the violence and oppression intended against them and displays God’s judgment on those who attack His people.

Jer 30:16-17 Nevertheless, all who devour you will be devoured…
Isa 33:1 Woe to you, O destroyer never destroyed, O traitor…

Ezk 13:8 Therefore this is what the Lord GOD says…
Ezk 24:14 I, the LORD, have spoken; the time is coming…

And on that day I will give Gog a burial place in Israel,

of mighty men and warriors of every kind,’

Commanders, champions, and soldiers alike will fall. The judgment reaches every rank of Gog’s invading force.

Jer 46:5-6 Why am I seeing this? They are terrified, they are retreating;…
Rev 19:19-21 Then I saw the beast and the kings of the earth…

declares the Lord GOD.

The certainty of this outcome rests on the authority of the sovereign God, who will defend His people and vindicate His holiness among the nations.

Ezk 24:14 I, the LORD, have spoken; the time is coming…
Ezk 12:25 I, the LORD, will speak whatever word I speak…
Ezk 11:21 But as for those whose hearts pursue detestable things…

Israel to Be Restored

I will display My glory among the nations,

God will openly reveal His majesty through decisive action against Israel’s enemies. His glory, shown in holiness, power, and righteousness, will no longer be confined to Israel’s experience but will be recognized by the surrounding peoples. The defeat of Gog’s forces will make clear that the Lord rules over every nation.

Isa 66:18 “And I, knowing their deeds and thoughts,…
Psa 96:3 Declare His glory among the nations, His wonders…
Mal 1:11 For My name will be great among the nations,…

and all the nations will see the judgment that I execute

The nations will witness that Gog’s destruction is not merely the result of military defeat or human strategy, but the righteous judgment of God. Those who oppose His purposes and threaten His people will be held accountable. This judgment also anticipates the final day when all peoples will stand before God’s authority.

Ezk 38:23 I will magnify and sanctify Myself, and I will reveal Myself…
Psa 9:16 The LORD is known by the justice He brings;…
Rev 15:4 Who will not fear You, O Lord, and glorify Your name?…

and the hand that I lay upon them.

God’s hand represents His direct power in judgment and deliverance. He will personally act against Gog and his allies, bringing their plans to ruin while preserving His people. The same hand that judges the wicked secures Israel and establishes the Lord’s name among the nations.

Isa 14:26 This is the plan devised for the whole earth…
1Sa 5:6 Now the hand of the LORD was heavy on the people of Ashdod…
Isa 19:16 In that day the Egyptians will be like women.…

From that day forward

God’s defeat of Gog and his armies will mark a decisive change for Israel. The deliverance will publicly demonstrate His protection and bring the nation into a new awareness of His rule.

Hos 3:5 Afterward, the people of Israel will return…
Amo 9:15 I will firmly plant them in their own land…

the house of Israel

All Israel, the people descended from the twelve tribes, will share in this recognition. Though the nation had endured division, exile, and opposition, God’s covenant purposes for Israel remain intact.

Jer 31:33 “But this is the covenant I will make”…
Ezk 36:22 Therefore tell the house of Israel that this is…

will know

Israel’s knowledge will arise from witnessing God’s acts in history. His judgment of their enemies and restoration of His people will remove doubt concerning His faithfulness and power.

Jer 31:34 No longer will each man teach his neighbor or his brother…
Jer 24:7 I will give them a heart to know Me, that I am the LORD.…
Hos 2:20 “And I will betroth you in faithfulness,…

that I am the LORD

The God of Israel will make His identity known as the sovereign ruler over nations and events. What He promised through Ezekiel will be fulfilled openly.

Exo 29:46 And they will know that I am the LORD their God,…
Exo 6:7 I will take you as My own people, and I will be your God.…
Ezk 36:23 I will show the holiness of My great name,…

their God.

Israel will again stand in its proper covenant relationship with the LORD, acknowledging Him alone as its God.

Jer 32:38 They will be My people, and I will be their God.
Ezk 11:20 so that they may follow My statutes, keep My ordinances,…
Ezk 37:27 My dwelling place will be with them; I will be their God…

And the nations will know that the house of Israel went into exile for their iniquity,

Israel’s exile would reveal that Jerusalem’s fall was the judgment of the LORD, not the failure of His power. The surrounding nations would see that He held His covenant people accountable for their sin.

2Ki 17:7-8 All this happened because the people of Israel had sinned…
Deu 29:24-28 So all the nations will ask, ‘Why has the LORD……
Dan 9:11-14 All Israel has transgressed Your law and turned away,…

because they were unfaithful to Me.

Israel had forsaken the LORD through idolatry, injustice, and rebellion against His commands. Their sin was a personal betrayal of the God who had redeemed and established them.

1Ch 10:13-14 So Saul died for his unfaithfulness to the LORD…
Jer 3:6-8 Now in the days of King Josiah, the LORD said to me,…
Hos 6:7 But they, like Adam, have transgressed the covenant;…

So I hid My face from them

The LORD withdrew His protection and favor, allowing Israel to experience the consequences of its rebellion. His absence from their defense marked the seriousness of their broken relationship with Him.

Deu 31:17-18 On that day My anger will burn against them,…
Isa 54:8 In a surge of anger I hid My face from you for a moment,…

and delivered them into the hands of their enemies,

Babylon’s conquest of Judah occurred under God’s sovereign judgment. The invaders acted according to their own purposes, yet they became the instrument by which the LORD disciplined His people.

Jdg 2:14-15 Then the anger of the LORD burned against Israel,…
Jer 12:7 I have forsaken My house; I have abandoned My inheritance.…
2Ch 36:17 So He brought up against them the king of the Chaldeans,…

so that they all fell by the sword.

Many perished in the invasion and siege, while others were carried into captivity. The devastation confirmed the warnings God had given Israel when they turned from Him.

Jer 43:11 He will come and strike down the land of Egypt,…
Jer 15:2 If they ask you, ‘Where shall we go?’ you are to tell them…
Jer 18:21 Therefore, hand their children over to famine;…

I dealt with them according to their uncleanness and transgressions,

Israel’s exile was God’s righteous judgment for persistent idolatry, covenant breaking, and moral corruption. Their uncleanness involved both ritual impurity and moral rebellion, while their transgressions were willful disobedience to the Lord’s commands. The Babylonian captivity fulfilled the warnings God had given through Moses and the prophets: rebellion would bring removal from the land He had given them.

Ezk 36:17-19 Son of man, when the people of Israel lived in their land,…
Jer 16:18 And I will first repay them double their iniquity…
Ezk 7:3-4 The end is now upon you, and I will unleash My anger.…

and I hid My face from them.

God withdrew His protecting favor and allowed Israel to experience the consequences of its sin through defeat, exile, and desolation. His apparent absence did not mean He had abandoned His covenant promises permanently, but that He was judging His people for their unfaithfulness. The surrounding promise of restoration shows that judgment would not have the final word.

Deu 31:17-18 On that day My anger will burn against them,…
Deu 32:20 He said: “I will hide My face from them;…
Isa 54:8 In a surge of anger I hid My face from you for a moment,…

Therefore this is what the Lord GOD says:

The declaration comes with the full authority of the sovereign covenant God, who governs Israel’s history and acts according to His purposes.

Jer 31:10-11 Hear, O nations, the word of the LORD, and proclaim it…
Isa 49:25-26 Indeed, this is what the LORD says: “Even the captives…

Now I will restore Jacob from captivity

Jacob represents the united people of Israel. God promised to bring the exiles back from the lands where they had been scattered, reversing the judgment that had followed their persistent rebellion. The return from Babylon would demonstrate that Israel’s exile had not canceled God’s covenant purposes.

Deu 30:3-4 He will restore you from captivity and have compassion…
Jer 30:18 This is what the LORD says: “I will restore the fortunes……

and will have compassion on the whole house of Israel,

The restoration includes all Israel, not merely a surviving portion from Judah. God’s mercy would reunite and preserve His people despite the divisions, idolatry, and unfaithfulness that had marked their history.

Ezk 37:11-14 Then He said to me, “Son of man, these bones”…
Psa 106:44-46 Nevertheless He heard their cry; He took note…

and I will be jealous for My holy name.

God would act to uphold the holiness of His name, which Israel’s sin and exile had profaned before the nations. Their restoration would reveal that He had judged sin justly and remained faithful to His promises.

Ezk 36:21-23 But I had concern for My holy name, which the house of Israel…
Jol 2:18 Then the LORD became jealous for His land,…
Zec 1:14 Then the angel who was speaking with me said,…

They will forget their disgrace

Israel’s shame from rebellion, idolatry, defeat, and exile will be removed through God’s restoration. Forgiveness will replace the public humiliation brought by judgment.

Isa 54:4 Do not be afraid, for you will not be put to shame;…
Isa 61:7 Instead of shame, My people will have a double portion…
Jer 31:34 No longer will each man teach his neighbor or his brother…

and all the treachery they committed against Me,

Their long history of covenant unfaithfulness will no longer define them. God’s mercy does not deny their sin but fully cleanses and restores those He brings back to Himself.

Hos 5:7 They have been unfaithful to the LORD;…
Hos 6:7 But they, like Adam, have transgressed the covenant;…
Jer 3:20 But as a woman may betray her husband, so you have betrayed…

when they dwell securely in their land,

The regathered nation will live in the land God promised to Israel’s fathers, no longer scattered or ruled by foreign powers. Their security follows the Lord’s judgment of their enemies and renewal of His people.

Jer 23:6 In His days Judah will be saved; Israel will dwell securely.…
Jer 32:37 I will surely gather My people from all the lands…
Lev 25:18-19 You are to keep My statutes and observe My judgments…

with no one to frighten them.

Israel will live without the fear of invasion, captivity, or destruction. The peace described is secured by God’s presence among them and belongs to the future restoration of His kingdom.

Lev 26:6 And I will give peace to the land, and you will lie down…
Jer 30:10 As for you, O Jacob My servant, do not be afraid…
Zep 3:13 The remnant of Israel will no longer do wrong or speak lies,…

When I bring them back from the peoples

Israel’s restoration follows the judgment and dispersion brought on by their covenant unfaithfulness. God Himself will return His people from among the nations.

Deu 30:3 He will restore you from captivity and have compassion…
Jer 29:14 I will be found by you, declares the LORD, …
Isa 11:12 He will raise a banner for the nations and gather…

and gather them out of the lands of their enemies,

Those who had lived under foreign domination will be brought back to their land. The regathering reverses their exile and confirms that Israel’s future is governed by God’s purpose rather than the power of hostile nations.

Lev 26:44-45 Yet in spite of this, when they are in the land…
Deu 30:4 Even if you have been banished to the farthest horizon,…
Jer 32:37 I will surely gather My people from all the lands…

I will show My holiness in them

God’s holiness will be displayed through His faithfulness to restore, cleanse, and preserve Israel. Their renewal will reveal His righteous character and His determination to keep His promises.

Lev 22:32 You must not profane My holy name. I must be acknowledged…
Ezk 36:23 I will show the holiness of My great name,…
Lev 10:3 Then Moses said to Aaron, “This is what the LORD meant…

in the sight of many nations.

The nations will witness Israel’s restoration and recognize that the Lord alone has acted. What was once seen as Israel’s defeat will become public evidence of God’s authority over His people and the world.

Psa 98:2 The LORD has proclaimed His salvation…
Ezk 36:36 Then the nations around you that remain will know…
Isa 52:10 The LORD has bared His holy arm in the sight of all the nations…

Then they will know that I am the LORD their God,

Israel’s restoration will reveal the LORD’s covenant faithfulness, power, and authority. Having experienced judgment, exile, deliverance, and renewal, the people will recognize Him not only as their national God but as the sovereign Lord who keeps His promises.

Exo 6:7 I will take you as My own people, and I will be your God.…
Exo 29:46 And they will know that I am the LORD their God,…
Jer 24:7 I will give them a heart to know Me, that I am the LORD.…

when I regather them to their own land,

God will bring Israel back to the land He gave their fathers. The return from Babylon anticipated this promise, but the setting of Ezekiel’s prophecy points to a complete national restoration following the time of judgment and conflict described in the surrounding chapters.

Ezk 11:17 Therefore declare that this is what the Lord GOD says:…
Jer 32:37 I will surely gather My people from all the lands…
Deu 30:5 And the LORD your God will bring you into the land…

not leaving any of them behind

The gathering will be comprehensive. Those scattered among the nations because of Israel’s unfaithfulness will not be forgotten or excluded from God’s restoration.

Deu 30:4 Even if you have been banished to the farthest horizon,…
Isa 11:12 He will raise a banner for the nations and gather…

after their exile among the nations.

Israel’s dispersion was the result of divine judgment for persistent rebellion, yet it did not cancel God’s covenant purposes. Their return will display both His justice in discipline and His mercy in restoring His people.

Deu 30:1-3 When all these things come upon you—the blessings and curses…
Lev 26:44-45 Yet in spite of this, when they are in the land…
Jer 29:14 I will be found by you, declares the LORD, …

And I will no longer hide My face from them,

God’s withdrawal of favor had accompanied Israel’s rebellion and judgment. After restoring the nation from exile and cleansing it from idolatry, He promises renewed fellowship and the end of His judicial discipline.

Isa 54:8 In a surge of anger I hid My face from you for a moment,…
Psa 27:9 Hide not Your face from me, nor turn away Your servant in anger.…
Deu 31:17-18 On that day My anger will burn against them,…

for I will pour out My Spirit on the house of Israel,

The restored nation will receive the Spirit of God, bringing inward renewal and enabling Israel to live in faithfulness to the covenant. This outpouring belongs to the promised future restoration of Israel under God’s direct blessing.

Jol 2:28-29 And afterward, I will pour out My Spirit on all people.…
Act 2:17-18 In the last days, God says, I will pour out My Spirit…
Isa 32:15 until the Spirit is poured out upon us from on high.…

declares the Lord GOD.”

The promise rests on the authority of the covenant God, who will accomplish what He has declared.

Ezk 36:27 And I will put My Spirit within you and cause you…
Isa 59:21 “As for Me, this is My covenant with them,” says the LORD…
Jer 31:33 “But this is the covenant I will make”…
