The whole valley of the dead bodies and ashes
This phrase refers to the Valley of Hinnom, a place historically associated with idolatry and child sacrifice (2 Kings 23:10, Jeremiah 7:31). It became a symbol of judgment and desolation. In prophetic literature, it represents a transformation from a place of death to one of holiness, signifying God's power to redeem and sanctify even the most defiled areas.

and all the fields as far as the Kidron Valley
The Kidron Valley, located east of Jerusalem, was a significant geographical landmark. It often served as a boundary and was associated with cleansing and judgment (2 Samuel 15:23, 2 Kings 23:4). The mention of fields extending to this valley indicates a comprehensive sanctification of the land surrounding Jerusalem, emphasizing the extent of God's redemptive work.

to the corner of the Horse Gate to the east
The Horse Gate was part of Jerusalem's city wall, mentioned in Nehemiah 3:28. It was likely used for military purposes, symbolizing strength and defense. Its inclusion in this prophecy highlights the complete transformation and protection of the city, extending even to its strategic and fortified areas.

will be holy to the LORD
This phrase underscores the ultimate purpose of God's redemptive plan: to consecrate the land and its people to Himself. Holiness to the LORD signifies a return to covenant faithfulness and divine favor, reminiscent of the dedication of the temple and the people of Israel (Exodus 28:36, Zechariah 14:20-21).

It will never again be uprooted or demolished.
This promise of permanence contrasts with the history of Jerusalem's destruction and exile (2 Kings 25:9-10, Jeremiah 52:12-14). It reflects the eschatological hope of an eternal, unshakeable kingdom, aligning with prophecies of a new covenant and a restored Israel (Jeremiah 31:31-34, Revelation 21:1-4). This assurance points to the ultimate fulfillment in the reign of Christ, where His kingdom will endure forever (Daniel 2:44, Luke 1:33).

What Does Jeremiah 31:40 Mean
The whole valley of the dead bodies and ashes

• In Jeremiah’s day this referred to the Valley of Hinnom, a ghastly place where dead bodies and refuse burned (Jeremiah 7:31–32; 2 Kings 23:10).

• God promises that even this defiled valley will be reclaimed. The same Lord who judged sin will cleanse the ground that once symbolized condemnation (Isaiah 66:24; Revelation 20:14).

• The change foretells the coming day when no pocket of creation remains outside His redeeming reach.

and all the fields as far as the Kidron Valley

• The Kidron runs east of Jerusalem between the city and the Mount of Olives (2 Samuel 15:23; John 18:1).

• By including “all the fields,” the prophecy widens the circle of restoration from the worst site of corruption to the daily places of work and harvest (2 Chronicles 30:14).

• Nothing surrounding Jerusalem will escape this sweeping consecration.

to the corner of the Horse Gate to the east

• The Horse Gate, near the Temple area (Nehemiah 3:28; 2 Chronicles 23:15), marked where the king’s horses entered for warfare.

• God encompasses even military strongholds, declaring that instruments once linked to war will reside within holy ground (Isaiah 2:4).

• The detailed border points assure Israel that every recognizable landmark will share in the promise.

will be holy to the LORD

• “Holy” means set apart exclusively for God’s purpose (Exodus 19:6).

• Zechariah later echoes this vision: “Holy to the LORD” will be inscribed even on common cooking pots (Zechariah 14:20–21).

• The prophecy points ahead to Messiah’s reign when the whole earth—and certainly its capital—will reflect God’s glory (1 Peter 2:9).

It will never again be uprooted or demolished.

• Previous generations watched Jerusalem fall, but God guarantees a final, irreversible restoration (Jeremiah 24:6).

Amos 9:15 mirrors the pledge: “They will never again be uprooted from the land I have given them.”

Revelation 21:1–4 culminates the thought with the New Jerusalem, secure forever under God’s dwelling.

summary

Jeremiah 31:40 promises that every part of Jerusalem—especially the most defiled spots—will be totally reclaimed, consecrated, and permanently secure under God’s rule. The Lord transforms judgment sites into holy ground, extends holiness to the surrounding fields and gates, and vows a lasting restoration nothing can overturn.

(40) The whole valley of the dead bodies . . .--We have to think of this city as Jeremiah saw it during the horrors of the siege--the lower part, the "plain" or "valley" of the city, the valley of Hinnom (comp. Jeremiah 19:11), filled with corpses lying unburied in the streets (Lamentations 2:21; Lamentations 4:9), the "ashes" of burnt and shattered houses encumbering the streets with their debris, the fields or open spaces that stretched to the Kidron valley, and the "horse-gate" by the king's palace (2Kings 11:16; 2Chronicles 23:15; Nehemiah 3:28)--all this now lay before him as a scene of unspeakable desolation; but in his vision of the restored city he sees it all cleansed from whatever was defiling, consecrated to Jehovah, and holy as the precincts of the Temple. It is, perhaps, not without significance in connection with this passage, that when the city was restored, the region above the "horse-gate" was repaired by the priests, who seem to have had their houses in that quarter (Nehemiah 3:28-29). They appear to have been anxious to restore the sanctity of that over which Jeremiah had lamented as desecrated and defiled. The word for "ashes" was a technical one (Leviticus 6:10-11) for the refuse which remained on the altar after a burnt-offering, and which was to be carried without the camp (Leviticus 4:12; Leviticus 6:11). Probably this and the sweepings of the Temple were thrown into the valley of Hinnom. . . . Verse 40. - The southern boundary of the city. The whole valley of the dead bodies, and of the ashes; rather,... even the dead bodies and the ashes. It is assumed by most that Jeremiah means the valley of Hinnom, which, after its defilement by Josiah (2 Kings 23:10), had become a receptacle of rubbish and offal. It is, however, against this view that the word for "valley" is not gai (elsewhere connected with Hinnom), but emek, i.e. "deep lying plain." The "dead bodies" are the corpses of men and animals, destroyed by the judgment of God, and lying unburied; but where, seems uncertain. Ashes. Wood ashes are not here meant, but those of flesh and fat, which remained after the burning of a sacrificial victim (see Leviticus 1:16; and comp. 4:12). The horse gate. Mentioned in Nehemiah 3:28. Holy unto the Lord. The unclean spots in the neighbourhood having been transformed. The expression reminds us of Exodus 28:36 (the legend on the forefront of the high priest's mitre).
