Berean Study Bible Judgment on JerusalemJerusalem’s rulers had abused their authority, neglected justice, and preyed upon those they were appointed to protect. The city chosen as the center of worship had become marked by violence, bribery, and exploitation. Nam 3:1 Woe to the city of blood, full of lies, full of plunder… rebellious Its people had resisted the Lord’s commands and ignored the warnings delivered through His prophets. Their rebellion included idolatry, covenant unfaithfulness, and refusal to repent despite the approaching judgment. Ezk 2:3 “Son of man,” He said to me, “I am sending you… and defiled! Moral corruption and bloodshed had polluted Jerusalem. Though the temple remained in the city, its inhabitants had profaned the holiness required of God’s people, bringing the city under divine judgment. Ezk 22:4 You are guilty of the blood you have shed… She heeded no voice; Jerusalem repeatedly ignored God’s warnings through His prophets, refusing the call to turn from sin before judgment came. Pro 1:24-25 Because you refused my call, and no one took… she accepted no correction. Though God disciplined His people to bring them back to covenant faithfulness, they remained stubborn, as Israel had often done throughout its history. Jer 2:30 I have struck your sons in vain; they accepted… She does not trust in the LORD; Rather than relying on the LORD, Judah looked to its own strength, foreign alliances, and false gods. Jer 17:5 This is what the LORD says: “Cursed is the man who trusts… she has not drawn near to her God. The city neglected true worship and obedience, remaining spiritually distant from the God who had chosen and called her. Jas 4:8 Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you.… Her princes are roaring lions; Jerusalem’s rulers used their authority to prey on the people rather than protect them. Like lions, symbols of power and ferocity, they exploited the weak, seized what they wanted, and ruled without justice. Pro 28:15 Like a roaring lion or a charging bear is a wicked ruler.… her judges are evening wolves, Those appointed to administer justice were equally corrupt. Instead of defending the innocent and restraining evil, they pursued gain with the hunger and cruelty of wolves hunting at night. Jer 5:6 Therefore a lion from the forest will strike them down,… leaving nothing for the morning. Their oppression was thorough and relentless, stripping the people of security, property, and justice. Such leadership revealed the deep moral ruin of Jerusalem and invited God’s judgment. Exo 12:10 Do not leave any of it until morning; before the morning… Her prophets are reckless, faithless men. Those appointed to speak for God had abandoned their calling, speaking carelessly and misleading the people rather than declaring the Lord’s truth. Their unfaithfulness deepened Judah’s spiritual ruin because the nation’s leaders no longer provided sound instruction or called the people back to obedience. Jer 23:11 “For both prophet and priest are ungodly;”… Her priests profane the sanctuary; The priests, charged with guarding the holiness of the temple, where God’s presence dwelt among His people, and directing Israel’s worship, treated sacred things as common. Their corruption dishonored the place where God had set His name and weakened the distinction between holy worship and the practices of the surrounding nations. Ezk 44:7 In addition to all your other abominations,… they do violence to the law. Rather than preserving and applying God’s commands faithfully, the priests twisted, ignored, or violated them. The law that was meant to establish justice, righteousness, and covenant faithfulness was abused by those entrusted to teach it, leaving Judah without godly leadership. Ezk 22:26 Her priests do violence to My law and profane My holy things… The LORD within her is righteous; Though Jerusalem had become corrupt, the LORD remained in her midst as the holy and righteous God of the covenant. His presence in the city, where His temple stood, exposed the contrast between His character and the conduct of its leaders and inhabitants. Psa 46:5 God is within her; she will not be moved.… He does no wrong. God was not responsible for Judah’s corruption or the judgment coming upon it. Every act of His rule was right, unlike the violence, deceit, and injustice practiced by the people. Job 34:10-12 Therefore listen to me, O men of understanding.… He applies His justice morning by morning; God continually made His standard of justice known and did not neglect to govern His people. Day after day, His righteous judgments testified against the sins of Jerusalem. Jer 21:12 O house of David, this is what the LORD says:… He does not fail at dawn, The LORD’s justice was steady and certain. He was never absent, unaware, or delayed in dealing rightly with evil. Psa 121:4 Behold, the Protector of Israel will neither slumber… yet the unjust know no shame. Jerusalem’s wicked continued without repentance despite God’s presence and repeated warnings. Their lack of shame revealed hardened hearts and prepared the city for the judgment Zephaniah announced. Jer 8:12 Are they ashamed of the abomination they have…
Purification of the NationsGod had already demonstrated His authority over surrounding peoples by bringing down proud and violent kingdoms. Assyria’s fall stood as a recent and sobering example of His judgment against nations that exalted themselves and oppressed others. Isa 34:2 The LORD is angry with all the nations.… their corner towers are destroyed. The strongest points of fortified cities could not withstand God’s decree. Towers, walls, and military power offered no lasting security when judgment came. Ezk 26:4 They will destroy the walls of Tyre and demolish her towers.… I have made their streets deserted with no one to pass through. Cities once filled with commerce, travelers, and daily life became silent through war, exile, and destruction. Their emptiness revealed the completeness of the devastation. Jer 33:10 This is what the LORD says: In this place you say… Their cities are laid waste, The ruin of these cities was not accidental but the result of God’s judgment carried out through invading armies. Their condition warned Judah that covenant privilege would not shield a rebellious people from discipline. Jer 4:7 A lion has gone up from his thicket, and a destroyer… with no man, no inhabitant. The land was left without normal life or settlement, portraying judgment in its fullest severity. Yet God’s purpose was not only punishment; He was calling His people to fear Him, receive correction, and turn from their sin. Jer 34:22 Behold, I am going to give the command, declares the LORD… I said, ‘Surely you will fear Me and accept correction.’ God had warned Jerusalem through His prophets and through the judgments already falling on surrounding nations. He expected Judah to recognize His authority, turn from idolatry and injustice, and submit to His discipline. Pro 1:7 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge,… Then her dwelling place would not be cut off despite all for which I punished her. Jerusalem and Judah could have been spared complete ruin if they had responded in repentance. God’s judgment was not arbitrary; their continued place in the land depended on their covenant obedience. Jer 18:7-8 At any time I might announce that a nation or kingdom… But they rose early to corrupt all their deeds. Instead of changing, the people eagerly continued in rebellion. Their corruption affected worship, leadership, justice, and daily life, confirming the judgment that would come through Babylon. Pro 4:16 For they cannot sleep unless they do evil;… Therefore wait for Me,” declares the LORD, The faithful are called to remain steadfast until God acts. Their hope rests not in political alliances or human strength, but in the LORD’s appointed intervention. Psa 27:14 Wait patiently for the LORD; be strong and courageous.… “until the day I rise to testify. God will openly confront the rebellion of nations and vindicate His holiness. He stands as the righteous Judge whose verdict cannot be challenged. Mic 1:2 Hear, O peoples, all of you; listen, O earth!… For My decision is to gather nations, to assemble kingdoms, The coming judgment reaches beyond Judah to the surrounding peoples and the kingdoms of the earth. God rules over every nation and holds all rulers accountable. Jol 3:2 I will gather all the nations and bring them down… to pour out upon them My indignation—all My burning anger. His wrath is a deliberate judgment against idolatry, violence, pride, and injustice. No nation escapes because of power, wealth, or military strength. Psa 78:49 He unleashed His fury against them, wrath, indignation… For all the earth will be consumed by the fire of My jealousy. God’s jealousy reflects His rightful demand for exclusive worship and covenant faithfulness. The judgment will be sweeping and severe, clearing the way for the purification and restoration that follows. Deu 4:24 For the LORD your God is a consuming fire, a jealous God.
A Faithful RemnantGod promises to cleanse the nations from the corrupt speech tied to false worship, rebellion, and moral defilement. Their words will no longer honor idols or oppose the Lord, but will reflect hearts turned to Him. Isa 6:5-7 Then I said: “Woe is me, for I am ruined,… that all may call upon the name of the LORD The restoration extends beyond Israel to peoples from every nation. They will recognize the LORD as the true God and openly worship Him, seeking Him in faith and obedience. Jol 2:32 And everyone who calls on the name of the LORD will be saved… and serve Him shoulder to shoulder. Formerly divided peoples will stand together in united service to God. The nations will no longer be separated by idolatry and hostility but will join in willing worship under the LORD’s rule. Isa 56:6-8 And the foreigners who join themselves to the LORD… From beyond the rivers of Cush Cush lay south of Egypt along the upper Nile, in the region of ancient Nubia. Even from lands regarded as distant from Judah, people would come under the Lord’s rule. Isa 18:1 Woe to the land of whirring wings, along the rivers of Cush, My worshipers, Those who turn to the Lord in faith will honor Him, including people from nations once far from Israel and its worship. Isa 56:6-7 And the foreigners who join themselves to the LORD… My scattered people, God would not forget His dispersed covenant people. After judgment and exile, He would preserve a faithful remnant and bring them back to Himself. Deu 30:3-4 He will restore you from captivity and have compassion… will bring Me an offering. Their return would be marked by willing worship and acceptable service to the Lord, showing restored fellowship rather than mere outward ritual. Isa 66:20 And they will bring all your brothers from all the nations… On that day God will intervene to judge sin and restore His people. The promised future includes both the removal of rebellion and the renewal of those who belong to Him. Isa 25:9 And in that day it will be said, “Surely this is our God;… you will not be put to shame Jerusalem’s former disgrace, caused by unfaithfulness to the Lord, will no longer define her. God’s forgiveness will replace the shame of past rebellion with restored standing before Him. Rom 10:11 It is just as the Scripture says: “Anyone who believes… for any of the deeds by which you have transgressed against Me. The people’s sins were deliberate acts against God’s authority, yet He promises cleansing rather than lasting condemnation for the repentant. Lev 26:40-42 But if they will confess their iniquity… For then I will remove from among you those who rejoice in their pride, God will purge the community of the arrogant who exalt themselves and persist in rebellion. Their removal prepares Zion for true worship. Isa 13:11 I will punish the world for its evil and the wicked… and you will never again be haughty on My holy mountain. Mount Zion, the place associated with God’s dwelling and worship, will no longer be marked by pride. The restored people will live before the Lord in humility and reverence. Psa 24:3-4 Who may ascend the hill of the LORD? Who may stand… But I will leave within you After purging Jerusalem of its rebellion, the LORD promises to preserve a remnant among His people. Though judgment would remove the proud and corrupt, God would not abandon His covenant purposes for Israel. Ezk 6:8 Yet I will leave a remnant, for some of you… a meek and humble people, Those who remain will be marked by submission to God rather than the arrogance that brought judgment upon the nation. Their character reflects the work of God in those who recognize their dependence on Him. Isa 57:15 For thus says the One who is high and lifted up… and they will trust in the name of the LORD. The remnant will rest in the LORD’s revealed character, authority, and faithfulness. Their security will not lie in political strength, wealth, or religious appearance, but in the God who saves and keeps His people. Psa 20:7 Some trust in chariots and others in horses… The remnant of Israel “The remnant of Israel” refers to those whom God preserves through judgment, separating them from the rebellion and idolatry that brought ruin upon the nation. They will become a restored people marked by covenant faithfulness. Mic 2:12 I will surely gather all of you, O Jacob; … will no longer do wrong or speak lies, Their former patterns of injustice, oppression, and falsehood will be removed. God’s cleansing will produce a people whose conduct reflects His righteous rule. Isa 33:15 He who walks righteously and speaks with sincerity,… nor will a deceitful tongue be found in their mouths. Truthfulness will characterize life among the restored remnant, replacing the corruption that had damaged worship, justice, and community. Rev 14:5 And no lie was found in their mouths; they are blameless. But they will feed and lie down, God will provide security and abundance for His people, like a flock resting safely under the care of its shepherd. Ezk 34:14 I will feed them in good pasture, and the lofty mountains… with no one to make them tremble.” The threats of enemies, invasion, and judgment will be gone. Israel’s remnant will live in peace under God’s protection. Lev 26:6 And I will give peace to the land, and you will lie down…
Israel’s RestorationJerusalem is called to celebrate because the Lord’s judgment is giving way to restoration. Zion, the city of David and the site of the Temple, represented God’s dwelling among His covenant people. Zec 2:10 “Shout for joy and be glad, O Daughter of Zion,”… shout aloud, O Israel! The whole nation is summoned to public rejoicing. After warnings of coming judgment, God promises deliverance from the enemies and troubles that had brought grief to His people. Psa 81:1 For the choirmaster. According to Gittith. Of Asaph.… Be glad and rejoice with all your heart, Their joy is to be sincere and complete, arising from God’s mercy and faithfulness rather than temporary circumstances. Psa 32:11 Be glad in the LORD and rejoice, O righteous ones;… O Daughter of Jerusalem! The address emphasizes God’s personal covenant relationship with Jerusalem. Though the city had faced discipline for sin, it would yet experience the Lord’s presence, protection, and restoration. Zec 9:9 Rejoice greatly, O Daughter of Zion! Shout in triumph… The LORD has taken away your punishment; God promises to remove Judah’s judgment after purifying and restoring His people. Their guilt will no longer stand against them, because the Lord Himself provides forgiveness and redemption. 2Sa 12:13 Then David said to Nathan, “I have sinned…”… He has turned back your enemy. The nations that oppressed Judah will no longer prevail. God, who had used foreign powers to discipline His people, will decisively defeat those enemies and secure Jerusalem. Psa 56:9 Then my enemies will retreat on the day I cry for help.… Israel’s King, the LORD, is among you; The Lord is not merely Israel’s protector from afar but her rightful King, dwelling in the midst of His restored people. His presence brings order, deliverance, and covenant blessing, anticipating Immanuel, “God with us.” Num 23:21 He considers no disaster for Jacob; He sees no trouble… no longer will you fear any harm. With the Lord reigning among them and their enemies removed, God’s people will live in safety rather than under the terror of invasion, judgment, or exile. Isa 54:14 In righteousness you will be established,… On that day After the Lord judges Judah’s enemies and restores His people, He will bring a time of security and joy to Jerusalem. Zec 14:9 On that day the LORD will become King over all the earth—… they will say to Jerusalem: The city, once marked by rebellion, judgment, and shame, will receive words of comfort as the Lord dwells among His restored people. Isa 40:1-2 “Comfort, comfort My people,” says your God.… “Do not fear, God’s presence removes the cause for terror. His judgment against sin will be complete, and His people will no longer face the threats that had surrounded them. Isa 41:10 Do not fear, for I am with you; do not be afraid… O Zion; Zion represents Jerusalem as the place God chose for His name and the people He gathers to Himself. Isa 52:1-2 Awake, awake, clothe yourself with strength, O Zion!… do not let your hands fall limp. The restored community is not to give way to despair or weakness. God’s saving work gives His people strength to continue in faithful obedience. Isa 35:3 Strengthen the limp hands and steady the feeble knees! The LORD your God is among you; God dwelt in the midst of Israel and had not abandoned His covenant people. His presence, once associated with the tabernacle and temple, assured them of His protection and faithful care, ultimately fulfilled in Emmanuel, “God with us.” Exo 29:45-46 Then I will dwell among the Israelites and be their God.… He is mighty to save. The Lord possesses complete power to rescue His people from judgment, enemies, and sin. His saving work reaches its fullest expression in Jesus Christ, the Savior who delivers believers from sin and death. Isa 63:1 Who is this coming from Edom, from Bozrah… He will rejoice over you with gladness; God’s restoration of His people brings Him joy. Though Judah had deserved judgment, He would receive the repentant remnant with the love and delight of a Father welcoming His children. Deu 30:9 So the LORD your God will make you abound… He will quiet you with His love; God’s love would replace fear, sorrow, and shame with peace. Those restored to Him could rest in His steadfast care rather than remain troubled by the calamities surrounding them. Psa 131:2 Surely I have stilled and quieted my soul;… He will rejoice over you with singing.” The Lord’s joy over His redeemed people points beyond their immediate restoration to the final gathering of God’s people, when they will dwell with Him in lasting peace. Isa 52:9 Break forth in joy, sing together, O ruins of Jerusalem,… “I will gather those among you who grieve over the appointed feasts, The faithful remnant mourned because exile and oppression had interrupted the festivals God commanded Israel to observe, including Passover, Pentecost, and the Feast of Tabernacles. These gatherings centered Israel’s worship, recalled God’s covenant faithfulness, and preserved the nation’s identity. God promises to bring back those burdened by the loss of public worship and restore them to their proper place among His people. Lam 1:4 The roads to Zion mourn, because no one comes… so that you will no longer suffer reproach. Israel’s inability to worship freely had become a source of humiliation before the surrounding nations. The Lord would remove that shame by restoring His people, their worship, and their honor. The promise anticipates the fuller redemption accomplished by Christ, who gathers His people and removes the guilt and disgrace of sin. Ezk 36:15 I will no longer allow the taunts of the nations… Behold, at that time, God points to the coming day when He will openly intervene for Jerusalem and His people, bringing judgment on their enemies and restoring those who belong to Him. Jol 3:1 Yes, in those days and at that time, when I restore… I will deal with all who afflict you. The nations that oppressed Judah, including the powers that brought humiliation, violence, and exile, will answer to the Lord for their actions. Isa 49:25 Indeed, this is what the LORD says: “Even the captives… I will save the lame Those weakened, wounded, and cast aside will not be forgotten. God will restore His afflicted people rather than leaving them in their helpless condition. Mic 4:6 “On that day,” declares the LORD, “I will gather the lame;… and gather the scattered; The people driven from their land by conquest and exile will be brought back under God’s care and rule. Ezk 34:12-13 As a shepherd looks for his scattered sheep… and I will appoint praise and fame for the disgraced throughout the earth. Judah’s former shame among the nations will be reversed. The Lord will give His restored people honor and a recognized place among the nations, demonstrating that their salvation and restoration came from Him. Deu 26:19 He will set you high in praise and name and honor… At that time I will bring you in; God promises a definite future act of restoration for His scattered people. The return from Babylon foreshadowed a fuller regathering of Israel under the Lord’s direct rule. Deu 30:3-4 He will restore you from captivity and have compassion… yes, at that time I will gather you. Israel’s restoration will not be accidental or achieved by human strength. The Lord will reunite His people, ending the dispersion and shame brought by judgment. Ezk 36:24 For I will take you from among the nations… For I will give you fame and praise among all the peoples of the earth Nations that once witnessed Judah’s humiliation will see the Lord honor His restored people. Israel’s renewed standing will display God’s faithfulness to His covenant promises. Deu 26:19 He will set you high in praise and name and honor… when I restore your captives before your very eyes,” The exiles would personally witness God reverse their condition and bring them home. This restoration includes deliverance from captivity and the renewal of the nation before the surrounding world. Jer 30:3 For behold, the days are coming, declares the LORD… says the LORD. The promise rests on the authority and covenant faithfulness of the God of Israel, who will accomplish what He has declared. Num 23:19 God is not a man, that He should lie, or a son of man,… This is a draft of the Berean Study Bible. Please send all comments and recommendations to bereanstudybible@aol.com. Bible Hub |
