Matthew 8
Berean Study Bible

The Leper’s Prayer

When Jesus came down from the mountain,

Jesus had finished delivering the Sermon on the Mount, revealing the righteousness and authority of the kingdom of heaven. The mountain setting recalls the giving of the Law through Moses, yet Jesus spoke with His own authority. His descent marked the beginning of public acts that confirmed His teaching through healing, deliverance, and power over creation.

Mat 17:9 As they were coming down the mountain, Jesus commanded them,…
Mrk 9:9 As they were coming down the mountain, …
Luk 9:37 The next day, when they came down from the mountain,…

large crowds followed Him.

People from Galilee, Judea, and surrounding regions were drawn by His teaching, His authority, and reports of His works. Some came seeking healing, others hoping for the promised Messiah, and many were eager to witness what He would do. Their presence showed the growing reach of His ministry and prepared the setting for the miracles that followed.

Mat 4:25 Large crowds followed Him, having come from Galilee,…
Jhn 6:2 A large crowd followed Him because they saw the signs…
Mrk 3:7-8 So Jesus withdrew with His disciples to the sea,…

Suddenly a leper came and knelt before Him,

Leprosy described a range of serious skin conditions that made a person ceremonially unclean and often separated from family, worship, and public life. By approaching Jesus, the man crossed a barrier that normally kept him at a distance. His kneeling showed reverence and confidence in Jesus’ authority.

Luk 5:12 While Jesus was in one of the towns, a man came along…
Mrk 1:40 Then a leper came to Jesus, begging on his knees:…
Lev 13:45-46 A diseased person must wear torn clothes…

saying, “Lord, if You are willing,

He recognized that Jesus had the power to help him and submitted himself to Jesus’ will. His request was not uncertain about Christ’s ability, but humble regarding His purpose.

Luk 22:42 Father, if You are willing, take this cup from Me.…
Jas 4:15 If the Lord is willing, we will live and do…
1Jn 5:14 And this is the confidence that we have before Him:…

You can make me clean.”

He sought more than relief from disease; he desired restoration from the uncleanness that had excluded him from normal religious and community life. Jesus alone could remove both the physical condition and the ceremonial defilement.

Mrk 1:41-42 Moved with compassion, Jesus reached out His hand…
Luk 5:13 Jesus reached out His hand and touched the man.…
2Ki 5:14 So Naaman went down and dipped himself in the Jordan…

Jesus reached out His hand and touched the man.

Lepers were ceremonially unclean and commonly separated from others under the regulations of Leviticus 13–14. Jesus did not avoid the man but personally touched him, showing compassion and authority over uncleanness. Rather than becoming unclean Himself, He removed the man’s defilement and restored him.

Luk 5:13 Jesus reached out His hand and touched the man.…
Luk 13:13 Then He placed His hands on her, and she straightened up…
Mat 9:29-30 Then He touched their eyes and said “According to your faith…

“I am willing,” He said.

Jesus answered the man’s appeal with both mercy and certainty. His willingness revealed God’s compassion toward those who came to Him in faith and confirmed that the healing was according to His divine purpose.

Mrk 1:41 Moved with compassion, Jesus reached out His hand…
Jhn 5:21 For just as the Father raises the dead and gives them life,…
1Jn 5:14-15 And this is the confidence that we have before Him:…

“Be clean!”

With a command, Jesus addressed not only the disease but the ceremonial uncleanness that had excluded the man from worship and community life. His word brought full restoration.

2Ki 5:10 Then Elisha sent him a messenger, who said, “Go and wash…
Lev 13:13 the priest shall examine him, and if the disease has…
Luk 17:14 When Jesus saw them, He said, “Go, show yourselves…

And immediately his leprosy was cleansed.

The healing was instant and complete, demonstrating Jesus’ authority over disease and identifying Him as the promised Messiah whose coming would bring healing and restoration.

Mrk 1:42 And immediately the leprosy left him, and the man…
2Ki 5:14 So Naaman went down and dipped himself in the Jordan…
Lev 14:7 Seven times he shall sprinkle the one to be cleansed…

Then Jesus instructed him,

Having healed the leper, Jesus gave him clear directions that honored God’s law and secured his restoration to public life.

Mrk 1:43-44 Jesus promptly sent him away with a stern warning:…
Mat 17:9 As they were coming down the mountain, Jesus commanded them,…

“See that you don’t tell anyone.

Jesus did not seek publicity through miracles or encourage expectations of a political Messiah.

Mat 9:30 And their eyes were opened. Jesus warned them sternly…
Luk 8:56 Her parents were astounded, but Jesus ordered them…

But go, show yourself to the priest

The priest was responsible for examining a person who had been cleansed of leprosy and declaring him ceremonially clean.

Luk 17:14 When Jesus saw them, He said, “Go, show yourselves…
Lev 14:2-4 This is the law for the one afflicted with a skin disease…

and offer the gift prescribed by Moses,

The required sacrifices expressed thanksgiving to God and completed the process of cleansing under the Law.

Lev 14:10-20 On the eighth day he is to bring two unblemished male lambs…
Luk 2:24 and to offer the sacrifice specified in the Law of the Lord:…

as a testimony to them.”

The man’s appearance before the priest would provide official evidence that he had been healed and bear witness to the authority of Jesus.

Luk 5:14 “Do not tell anyone,” Jesus instructed him.…
Mat 10:18 On My account you will be brought before governors and kings…

The Faith of the Centurion

When Jesus had entered Capernaum,

Capernaum stood on the northwestern shore of the Sea of Galilee and became the primary base for Jesus’ ministry in the region. Its synagogue, homes, and harbor reflected a busy fishing and trade town under Roman rule. Many of Jesus’ teachings and miracles occurred there.

Luk 7:1 When Jesus had concluded His discourse in the hearing…
Mrk 1:21 Then Jesus and His companions went to Capernaum,…
Luk 4:31 Then He went down to Capernaum, a town in Galilee,…

a centurion came

The centurion was a Roman military officer responsible for a company of soldiers. His presence reflects Rome’s control over Galilee. Though a Gentile and a man of rank, he approached Jesus with unusual respect and confidence in His authority.

Luk 7:2-3 There a highly valued servant of a centurion was sick…
Act 10:1-2 At Caesarea there was a man named Cornelius, a centurion…

and pleaded with Him,

The officer’s urgent request revealed humility and concern for his suffering servant. He did not rely on his position or Roman power but sought help from Jesus, whose authority he recognized as greater than his own.

Luk 7:4-6 They came to Jesus and pleaded with Him earnestly,…
Jhn 4:47 When he heard that Jesus had come from Judea to Galilee…
Mrk 5:23 My little daughter is near death. Please come…

“Lord,

The Roman centurion addresses Jesus with unusual respect, recognizing His authority despite his own position as an officer in the occupying army.

Luk 7:6 So Jesus went with them. But when He was not far…
Luk 5:8 When Simon Peter saw this, he fell at Jesus’ knees.…
Jhn 20:28 Thomas replied, “My Lord and my God!”

my servant

His concern reveals genuine care for a household servant, whom he values beyond the ordinary expectations of Roman society.

Luk 7:2 There a highly valued servant of a centurion was sick…
Luk 7:3 When the centurion heard about Jesus, he sent…
Luk 7:10 And when the messengers returned to the house,…

lies at home,

The servant is confined to the house, unable to come to Jesus personally, prompting the centurion to seek help on his behalf.

Mrk 2:1-4 A few days later Jesus went back to Capernaum.…
Psa 41:3 The LORD will sustain him on his bed of illness…
2Ki 20:1 In those days Hezekiah became mortally ill.…

paralyzed

The condition has left the servant helpless and dependent on others, with no human remedy in sight.

Act 9:33 There he found a man named Aeneas who had been paralyzed…
Luk 5:18-19 Just then some men came carrying a paralyzed man on a mat.…
Act 8:7 With loud shrieks, unclean spirits came out…

and in terrible agony.”

His suffering is severe, and the centurion appeals to Jesus because he believes Jesus has the power to heal.

Luk 16:24 So he cried out, ‘Father Abraham, have mercy on me…
Mat 17:15 “Lord, have mercy on my son,” he said. “He has seizures…
Mrk 9:18 Whenever it seizes him, it throws him to the ground.…

“I will go and heal him,”

Jesus readily answered the centurion’s request, showing compassion toward a Roman officer and his servant. Though the centurion was a Gentile and part of the occupying military force, Jesus did not treat him as beyond His care. His willingness to enter the man’s home revealed that God’s mercy was not limited to Israel alone.

Luk 7:7 That is why I did not consider myself worthy to come to You.…
Jhn 4:50 “Go,” said Jesus. “Your son will live.”…
Mrk 1:41 Moved with compassion, Jesus reached out His hand…

Jesus replied.

His answer carried the authority of one able to heal by His own power. The centurion would soon recognize that Jesus did not need to be physically present to act; His command was sufficient.

Luk 7:9 When Jesus heard this, He marveled at the centurion…
Mat 9:29 Then He touched their eyes and said “According to your faith…
Mrk 10:52 “Go,” said Jesus, “your faith has healed you.”…

The centurion answered,

A Roman officer with authority over soldiers, he was also a Gentile living among the Jewish people of Capernaum. Though he held rank and influence, he approached Jesus with unusual humility.

Mat 27:54 When the centurion and those with him saw the earthquake…
Mrk 15:39 When the centurion standing there in front of Jesus…
Luk 23:47 When the centurion saw what had happened,…

“Lord, I am not worthy

He recognized Jesus’ greater authority and did not presume upon his own position. His humility revealed genuine reverence and faith.

Luk 15:19 I am no longer worthy to be called your son.…
Luk 5:8 When Simon Peter saw this, he fell at Jesus’ knees.…
1Co 15:9 For I am the least of the apostles and am unworthy…

to have You come under my roof.

His request also showed consideration for the social and religious tensions between Jews and Gentiles. He did not demand Jesus’ presence but trusted Him without conditions.

Luk 7:6-7 So Jesus went with them. But when He was not far…
Act 10:28 He said to them, “You know how unlawful it is for a Jew…
Luk 19:5-6 When Jesus came to that place, He looked up and said…

But just say the word,

As a military officer accustomed to commands being obeyed, he understood authority. He believed Jesus could heal by His command alone.

Psa 33:9 For He spoke, and it came to be; He commanded…
Psa 107:20 He sent forth His word and healed them;…
Isa 55:11 So My word that proceeds from My mouth will not return to Me…

and my servant will be healed.

His concern for a servant displayed compassion, while his confidence rested entirely in Jesus’ power. Jesus’ healing would show that His authority extends beyond distance, ethnicity, and human status.

Luk 7:10 And when the messengers returned to the house,…
Jhn 4:50-53 “Go,” said Jesus. “Your son will live.”…
Mrk 7:29-30 Then Jesus told her, “Because of this answer, you may go.”…

For I myself am a man under authority,

The centurion understood the Roman chain of command. Though he held rank and responsibility, he was subject to superiors and exercised only delegated authority. He recognized that Jesus likewise acted with true authority, not merely as a healer but as One sent by God.

Luk 7:8 For I myself am a man under authority, with soldiers…
Rom 13:1 Everyone must submit himself to the governing authorities…
1Pe 2:13 Submit yourselves for the Lord’s sake to every human…

with soldiers under me.

As a centurion, he commanded a body of soldiers trained to obey promptly. His experience taught him that authority produces obedience, and he applied that understanding to Jesus’ power over disease and every unseen force.

Act 23:23 Then he called two of his centurions and said,…
Act 27:31-32 But Paul said to the centurion and the soldiers…
Act 10:7 When the angel who spoke to him had gone,…

I tell one to go, and he goes,

Orders in the Roman military were carried out without delay. The centurion believed Jesus needed only to speak, and sickness would depart as surely as a soldier obeyed his commander.

2Ki 5:14 So Naaman went down and dipped himself in the Jordan…
Jon 3:3 This time Jonah got up and went to Nineveh,…
Gen 12:4 So Abram departed, as the LORD had directed him…

and another to come, and he comes.

He viewed Jesus’ authority as greater than his own. Distance did not limit Christ’s command, because the servant’s illness was subject to His word.

Jhn 11:43-44 After Jesus had said this, He called out in a loud voice…
Luk 19:5-6 When Jesus came to that place, He looked up and said…
Mrk 1:17-18 “Come, follow Me,” Jesus said, “and I will make…

I tell my servant to do something, and he does it.”

The centurion’s household servant also responded to his authority. By this comparison, he confessed confidence that Jesus could heal without entering his home or touching the afflicted man.

Luk 17:7-10 Which of you whose servant comes in from plowing…
Col 3:22 Slaves, obey your earthly masters in everything,…
Eph 6:5 Slaves, obey your earthly masters with respect and fear…

When Jesus heard this,

He heard the centurion’s confidence that His word alone could heal a servant from a distance. The officer recognized that Jesus possessed authority greater than any earthly command.

Jhn 11:4 This sickness will not end in death. No, it is for the glory…
Jhn 4:50 “Go,” said Jesus. “Your son will live.”…
Mrk 5:36 But Jesus overheard their conversation and said to Jairus,…

He marveled

The centurion’s faith stood out because he trusted Jesus without requiring Him to enter his home or perform a visible act.

Luk 7:9 When Jesus heard this, He marveled at the centurion…
Mrk 6:6 And He was amazed at their unbelief. And He went around…

and said to those following Him,

Jesus turned to His disciples and the surrounding crowd, making the centurion’s response an example for all who heard Him.

Mat 16:24 Then Jesus told His disciples, “If anyone wants to come…
Luk 9:23 Then Jesus said to all of them, “If anyone wants to come…
Jhn 12:26 If anyone serves Me, he must follow Me; and where I am…

“Truly I tell you,

He introduced a solemn declaration that demanded careful attention.

Mat 5:18 For I tell you truly, until heaven and earth pass away…
Mrk 9:1 Then Jesus said to them, “Truly I tell you, there are some…”…
Luk 23:43 And Jesus said to him, “Truly I tell you,…

I have not found anyone in Israel

Though Israel had received God’s covenants, Scriptures, and promises, many had not recognized Jesus’ authority as clearly as this Gentile officer.

Jhn 1:11 He came to His own, and His own did not receive Him.
Luk 4:24 Then He added, “Truly I tell you, no prophet is accepted…”…
Rom 10:21 But as for Israel he says: “All day long…

with such great faith.

The centurion believed that Christ could accomplish what He willed by His command alone. His faith anticipated the gathering of believing Gentiles into God’s kingdom.

Mat 15:28 “O woman,” Jesus answered, “your faith is great!”…
Mrk 5:34 “Daughter,” said Jesus, “your faith has healed you.”…
Luk 17:19 Then Jesus said to him, “Rise and go; your faith”…

I say to you

Jesus speaks with divine authority, declaring the certainty of what follows.

Mat 10:15 Truly I tell you, it will be more bearable…
Mrk 10:15 Truly I tell you, anyone who does not receive…
Mat 5:18 For I tell you truly, until heaven and earth pass away…

Mat 7:21 Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter…
Mat 19:23 Then Jesus said to His disciples, “Truly I tell you, …

But the sons of the kingdom

The Jewish people were entrusted with God’s covenants and promises, yet covenant descent alone did not guarantee entrance into the kingdom. Those who rejected the Messiah would forfeit the blessings they expected to receive.

Mat 21:43 Therefore I tell you that the kingdom of God……

Then Jesus said to the centurion,

Jesus answered a Roman officer whose request for his servant had revealed unusual humility and confidence in His authority. Though a Gentile and part of the occupying military power, the centurion recognized Jesus as one able to command sickness without coming to the house.

Luk 7:6-9 So Jesus went with them. But when He was not far…
Mat 27:54 When the centurion and those with him saw the earthquake…
Mrk 15:39 When the centurion standing there in front of Jesus…

Luk 17:14 When Jesus saw them, He said, “Go, show yourselves…
2Ki 5:10-14 Then Elisha sent him a messenger, who said, “Go and wash…

As you have believed,

The centurion trusted that Jesus could heal by His word alone. His faith rested in Jesus’ authority rather than in any visible sign.

Mrk 10:52 “Go,” said Jesus, “your faith has healed you.”…
Luk 18:42 “Receive your sight!” Jesus replied. “Your faith…
Luk 7:50 And Jesus told the woman, “Your faith has saved you”…

so will it be done for you.”

Jesus confirmed that the servant’s healing would correspond to the centurion’s confident trust in Him.

Mat 9:29 Then He touched their eyes and said “According to your faith…
Mat 15:28 “O woman,” Jesus answered, “your faith is great!”…
Mrk 11:24 Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer,…

And his servant was healed at that very hour.

The healing occurred immediately, demonstrating Jesus’ authority over disease and confirming the centurion’s faith.

Jhn 4:52-53 So he inquired as to the hour when his son had recovered,…
Mrk 7:30 And she went home and found her child lying on the bed,…

Jesus Heals at Peter’s House

When Jesus arrived at Peter’s house,

Jesus entered an ordinary home in Capernaum, the fishing village that became a central place of His Galilean ministry. His presence in Peter’s household shows His readiness to minister among people in the realities of daily family life.

Mrk 1:29 As soon as Jesus and His companions had left the synagogue,…
Luk 4:38 After Jesus had left the synagogue, He went to the home…

He saw Peter’s mother-in-law

Peter was married and remained connected to his family while following Jesus. The household likely included extended family members, as was common in Jewish life.

Mrk 1:30 Simon’s mother-in-law was sick in bed with a fever,…
1Co 9:5 Have we no right to take along a believing wife…

sick in bed with a fever.

Her illness had left her unable to carry out normal responsibilities. Fever could become dangerous without effective treatment, and Jesus’ healing displayed His authority over human weakness and disease.

Mrk 1:31 So He went to her, took her by the hand…
Luk 4:39 He stood over her and rebuked the fever,…
Jhn 4:52-53 So he inquired as to the hour when his son had recovered,…

So He touched her hand,

Jesus entered personally into her suffering, showing both compassion and authority. His healing power was not distant or impersonal; He acted directly and without hesitation.

Luk 8:54 But Jesus took her by the hand and called out,…
Mat 9:25 After the crowd had been put outside, Jesus went in…
Mrk 5:41 Taking her by the hand, Jesus said, “Talitha koum!”…

and the fever left her,

The healing was immediate and complete. What had left her unable to fulfill her ordinary responsibilities was removed by Christ’s command and power, revealing His authority over disease.

Luk 4:39 He stood over her and rebuked the fever,…
Jhn 4:52 So he inquired as to the hour when his son had recovered,…
Mrk 1:42 And immediately the leprosy left him, and the man…

and she got up and began to serve Him.

Restored to full strength, Peter’s mother-in-law responded with practical hospitality. Her service showed that Jesus had not merely relieved her symptoms but returned her to health, purpose, and fellowship.

Mrk 1:31 So He went to her, took her by the hand…
Luk 8:55 Her spirit returned, and at once she got up.…
Jhn 12:2 So they hosted a dinner for Jesus there.…

When evening came,

When evening came, the Sabbath had ended at sunset, allowing people to travel and bring those afflicted to Jesus.

Mrk 1:32 That evening, after sunset, people brought to Jesus…
Luk 4:40 At sunset, all who were ill with various diseases…

many who were demon-possessed were brought to Jesus,

and healed all the sick.

No illness or affliction was beyond His power, revealing the mercy and authority of the Messiah.

Luk 6:19 The entire crowd was trying to touch Him,…
Mat 12:15 Aware of this, Jesus withdrew from that place.…
Mrk 6:56 And wherever He went—villages and towns and countrysides…

This was to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet Isaiah:

Matthew presents Jesus’ healing of the sick as the fulfillment of Isaiah’s prophecy, confirming that His ministry unfolded according to God’s revealed plan.

Mat 12:17 This was to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet…

The Cost of Discipleship

When Jesus saw a large crowd around Him,

The growing crowds demonstrated the widespread response to Jesus’ teaching and healing ministry. Many came with urgent physical needs, while others were drawn by His authority. Yet Jesus did not allow public demand to govern His movements or distract Him from the work appointed by the Father.

Mat 14:14 When He stepped ashore and saw a large crowd,…
Mrk 6:34 When Jesus stepped ashore and saw a large crowd.…

He gave orders to cross to the other side of the sea.

Jesus directed His disciples across the Sea of Galilee toward the eastern region, where He would confront demonic power and bring deliverance to the demon-possessed men near Gadara. The journey also tested the disciples’ trust in Him when a storm arose on the sea.

Mrk 4:35 When that evening came, He said to His disciples…
Luk 8:22 One day Jesus said to His disciples, “Let us cross…”…

And one of the scribes came to Him

Scribes were trained interpreters and teachers of the Mosaic Law, often connected with the Pharisees and influential in Jewish religious life. This man approached Jesus openly, unlike many leaders who opposed Him.

Mrk 12:28 Now one of the scribes had come up and heard their debate.…
Mrk 7:1 Then the Pharisees and some of the scribes who had come…
Mat 15:1 Then some Pharisees and scribes came to Jesus…

and said, “Teacher,

He addressed Jesus with respect as one recognized for religious authority and instruction.

Mrk 12:14 “Teacher,” they said, “we know that You are honest…
Mat 22:16 They sent their disciples to Him along with the Herodians.…
Luk 10:25 One day an expert in the law stood up to test Him.…

I will follow You

He expressed a desire to become Jesus’ disciple and to order his life under His teaching.

Luk 9:61 Still another said, “I will follow You, Lord;…
Mat 19:21 If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions…
Jhn 12:26 If anyone serves Me, he must follow Me; and where I am…

wherever You go.”

His promise sounded wholehearted, yet Jesus’ reply revealed that following Him meant surrendering comfort, security, and personal expectations.

Luk 9:57-58 As they were walking along the road, someone said…
Rev 14:4 These are the ones who have not been defiled with women…
Rut 1:16 But Ruth replied: “Do not urge me to leave you”…

Jesus replied,

Jesus answered a scribe who had declared his willingness to follow Him wherever He went, making clear the cost of such commitment.

Luk 9:57 As they were walking along the road, someone said…
Mrk 8:34 Then Jesus called the crowd to Him along with His disciples,…
Luk 14:26 “If anyone comes to Me and does not hate his father”…

“Foxes have dens

Psa 104:22 The sun rises, and they withdraw; they lie down…

and birds of the air have nests,

Psa 84:3 Even the sparrow has found a home, and the swallow a nest…
Ezk 17:23 I will plant it on the mountain heights of Israel…
Mat 13:32 Although it is the smallest of all seeds,…

but the Son of Man

Jesus referred to Himself as the Messiah sent from God, sharing fully in human weakness while carrying out His divine mission.

Dan 7:13-14 In my vision in the night I continued to watch, and I saw…
Jhn 3:13 No one has ascended into heaven except the One…
Mrk 2:10 But so that you may know that the Son of Man…

has no place to lay His head.”

During His public ministry, Jesus lived without a permanent home or earthly security. Following Him meant accepting that discipleship could require sacrifice, hardship, and the surrender of personal comfort.

Luk 9:58 Jesus replied, “Foxes have dens and birds of the air…
2Co 8:9 For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ,…
Jhn 1:11 He came to His own, and His own did not receive Him.

Another of His disciples requested,

The man was already among Jesus’ followers, yet he hesitated when faced with the demands of continued discipleship. Others were present as Jesus called people to follow Him without delay.

and bury my father.”

Burial of a parent was an important responsibility in Jewish life. Whether his father had died or he meant to remain home until his father’s death, the request revealed a divided loyalty between family duty and following Christ.

Jesus distinguished those who responded to God’s call from those who remained spiritually dead in unbelief, unresponsive to Christ’s call and the life He offers.

Burial was an honored duty in Jewish life, especially toward one’s parents. Yet service to Christ and His kingdom came first; those outside His mission could attend to ordinary earthly responsibilities.

Jesus Calms the Storm

When He got into the boat,

Jesus set out across the Sea of Galilee, where much of His public ministry had taken place. His departure led the disciples into a situation that would reveal both their weakness and His authority.

Mrk 4:1 Once again Jesus began to teach beside the sea…
Luk 8:22 One day Jesus said to His disciples, “Let us cross…”…
Jhn 6:17 got into a boat, and started across the sea…

His disciples followed Him.

They remained with their Master and entered the boat at His direction, soon facing a storm that tested their faith and demonstrated His power over creation.

Mat 4:20 And at once they left their nets and followed Him.
Mat 4:22 and immediately they left the boat and their father…
Luk 5:11 And when they had brought their boats ashore, they left…

Suddenly a violent storm came up on the sea,

The Sea of Galilee lies in a deep basin surrounded by hills, where winds can descend quickly and produce dangerous storms. The abrupt change from calm to violent conditions caught the disciples in a situation they could not control.

so that the boat was engulfed by the waves.

Psa 107:26 They mounted up to the heavens, then sunk to the depths;…

But Jesus was sleeping.

Exhausted from His ministry, Jesus rested in the boat while the storm raged. His calm contrasted with the disciples’ fear and prepared for the display of His authority over the wind and sea.

Act 12:6 On the night before Herod was to bring him to trial,…
Psa 4:8 I will lie down and sleep in peace, for You alone…

The disciples went and woke Him,

As the storm threatened the boat, the disciples turned to Jesus in fear. Though several were experienced fishermen, they recognized that the danger exceeded their ability to manage. Jesus’ presence with them was their only hope.

Luk 8:24 The disciples went and woke Him, saying, “Master, Master…
Mrk 4:38 But Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on the cushion.…
Psa 44:23 Wake up, O Lord! Why are You sleeping? Arise!……

saying, “Lord, save us!

They addressed Him as Lord and appealed directly for deliverance. Their cry showed both desperation and an awareness that Jesus possessed authority beyond that of an ordinary teacher.

Psa 118:25 O LORD, save us, we pray. We beseech You,…

The disciples believed they faced immediate death. Their alarm exposed the weakness of their faith, yet they came to the right person. Jesus would soon reveal His authority over the wind and sea, demonstrating that no circumstance was beyond His power.

“You of little faith,”

Jesus reproved the disciples for allowing fear to overcome the trust they should have placed in Him. Though they had seen His works and knew He was with them, the violence of the storm exposed the weakness of their confidence.

Mat 14:31 Immediately Jesus reached out His hand and took hold…

Jesus replied,

Mrk 5:36 But Jesus overheard their conversation and said to Jairus,…
Jhn 14:27 Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to you.…

“why are you so afraid?”

Their fear showed that they had not yet understood the extent of His authority. The storm was real, but the One in their boat ruled over it.

Mrk 4:40 “Why are you so afraid?” He asked. “Do you still…”…
Luk 8:25 “Where is your faith?” He asked. Frightened and amazed,…
Luk 12:32 Do not be afraid, little flock, for your Father…

Then He got up and rebuked the winds and the sea,

With a command, Jesus exercised authority belonging to the Creator. The winds and waves obeyed Him, revealing His divine power and confirming His identity as the promised Messiah.

and it was perfectly calm.

The sudden stillness left no doubt that the storm had ended by His word. What had been chaos became complete peace under His rule.

Luk 8:24 The disciples went and woke Him, saying, “Master, Master…
Jon 1:15 Then they picked up Jonah and cast him into the sea,…
Psa 107:30 They rejoiced in the silence, and He guided them…

The men were amazed and asked,

The disciples had seen Jesus heal disease and cast out demons, but His command over the storm confronted them with authority belonging to God alone. The sea, feared for its danger and unpredictability, became calm at His word.

Mrk 4:41 Overwhelmed with fear, they asked one another,…
Luk 8:25 “Where is your faith?” He asked. Frightened and amazed,…

“What kind of man is this?

Their question reveals growing recognition that Jesus was more than a teacher, prophet, or earthly Messiah. Though fully human, He possessed divine authority over creation.

Mat 16:16-17 Simon Peter answered, “You are the Christ…
Jhn 3:2 He came to Jesus at night and said, “Rabbi,…

Even the winds and the sea obey Him!”

Wind and sea responded immediately to Jesus’ command, showing His sovereignty over the world He made. The event moved the disciples further toward understanding His true identity.

The Demons and the Pigs

When Jesus arrived on the other side in the region of the Gadarenes,

Jesus crossed the Sea of Galilee into predominantly Gentile territory east of the lake. The region was associated with the Decapolis, where Greek and Roman culture had a strong influence. His arrival shows that His authority and mercy extended beyond Jewish villages and into places marked by spiritual darkness.

Mrk 5:1 On the other side of the sea, they arrived…
Luk 8:26 Then they sailed to the region of the Gerasenes…

He was met by two demon-possessed men coming from the tombs.

The men lived among tombs, a place of uncleanness and isolation in Jewish thought. Their condition revealed the destructive bondage of demonic power, separating them from normal life and filling the area with fear. Jesus confronted them directly, demonstrating His complete authority over the spiritual forces afflicting them.

Mrk 5:2-3 As soon as Jesus got out of the boat, He was met…
Luk 8:27 When Jesus stepped ashore, He was met by a demon-possessed…

They were so violent that no one could pass that way.

Their violence had made the road unusable and left the surrounding people unable to control or help them. What others could not overcome, Jesus would subdue with His command, bringing deliverance where fear and disorder had ruled.

Mrk 5:4-5 Though he was often bound with chains and shackles…
Luk 8:29 For Jesus had commanded the unclean spirit to come out…

“What do You want with us, Son of God?”

The demons immediately recognized Jesus’ divine identity and authority. Unlike many who questioned who He was, these evil spirits knew He possessed the authority of God and stood over them as their Judge.

Luk 4:34 “Ha! What do You want with us, Jesus of Nazareth?”…
Mrk 1:24 “What do You want with us, Jesus of Nazareth?”…
Luk 8:28 When the man saw Jesus, he cried out and fell down…

they shouted.

Their outcry revealed fear and agitation. Jesus’ presence exposed their rebellion and left them unable to resist His command.

Luk 4:41 Demons also came out of many people, shouting,…
Act 8:7 With loud shrieks, unclean spirits came out…
Mrk 1:23 Suddenly a man with an unclean spirit cried out…

“Have You come here to torture us before the appointed time?”

The demons knew their final judgment was certain and that God had set a time for their punishment. They feared that Jesus had come to begin that judgment before its appointed fulfillment.

Rev 20:10 And the devil who had deceived them was thrown…
Jud 1:6 And the angels who did not stay within their own domain…
2Pe 2:4 For if God did not spare the angels when they sinned…

In the distance

The herd stood apart from Jesus and the men He had encountered, in the largely Gentile territory east of the Sea of Galilee.

Mrk 5:6 When the man saw Jesus from a distance, he ran…
Heb 11:13 All these people died in faith, without having received…
Luk 15:20 So he got up and went to his father…

a large herd of pigs

Their presence reflects a region where Jewish dietary restrictions were not followed. Because pigs were unclean under the Law, the herd also underscores the setting’s distance from Jewish religious life and the substantial loss that would soon affect the local people.

Mrk 5:11 There on the nearby hillside, a large herd…
Luk 8:32 There on the hillside a large herd of pigs was feeding.…
Lev 11:7 And the pig, though it has a split hoof…

was feeding.

The ordinary scene would be abruptly interrupted by Jesus’ authority over the demons, revealing both the reality of spiritual evil and His power to command it.

Luk 15:15-16 So he went and hired himself out to a citizen…
Isa 65:4 sitting among the graves, spending nights in secret places…
Deu 14:8 as well as the pig; though it has a divided hoof,…

So the demons begged Jesus,

The evil spirits recognized His authority and could not resist His command. Their fear and submission showed that the powers of darkness were subject to Him.

Mrk 5:10 And he begged Jesus repeatedly not to send them out…
Luk 8:31 And the demons kept begging Jesus not to order them…
Luk 8:28 When the man saw Jesus, he cried out and fell down…

“If You drive us out,

They understood that their removal was certain and appealed only for where they might go. Jesus had come to confront and overthrow the works of the devil.

Mat 12:28 But if I drive out demons by the Spirit of God,…
Luk 11:20 But if I drive out demons by the finger of God,…
Mrk 3:15 and to have authority to drive out demons.

send us into the herd of pigs.”

The nearby pigs were unclean animals under Jewish law and were likely being raised in this largely Gentile region. The request revealed the demons’ desire to remain active within the physical world, while the events that followed exposed the destructive character of their influence.

Mrk 5:12 So the demons begged Jesus, “Send us to the pigs,”…
Luk 8:32 There on the hillside a large herd of pigs was feeding.…
Mrk 5:13 He gave them permission, and the unclean spirits came out…

“Go!” He told them.

Jesus commanded the demons with complete authority, freeing the two men from their oppression. His brief command reveals His power over the spiritual realm and His compassion toward those held captive by evil.

Mrk 1:25 But Jesus rebuked the spirit. “Be silent!” He said.…
Luk 4:35 But Jesus rebuked the demon. “Be silent!” He said.…
Act 16:18 She continued this for many days. Eventually Paul grew…

So they came out and went into the pigs,

The demons obeyed Jesus and entered the herd as they had requested. The presence of pigs fits the largely Gentile setting, since pigs were unclean under Jewish law.

Mrk 5:12-13 So the demons begged Jesus, “Send us to the pigs,”…
Luk 8:32-33 There on the hillside a large herd of pigs was feeding.…

and the whole herd rushed down the steep bank into the sea

Under demonic influence, the animals were driven violently toward destruction. The event openly displayed the destructive nature of the demons and confirmed that the men had been truly delivered.

Exo 14:27-28 So Moses stretched out his hand over the sea,…
Psa 106:11 The waters covered their foes; not one of them remained.
Neh 9:11 You divided the sea before them, and they crossed through it…

and died in the waters.

The drowning of the herd brought the episode to a decisive end. Jesus’ authority had overcome the demons, while the loss of the pigs showed the ruin that follows their influence.

Exo 15:10 But You blew with Your breath, and the sea covered them.…
Rev 16:3 And the second angel poured out his bowl into the sea…
Gen 7:21-23 And every living thing that moved upon the earth…

Those tending the pigs

Pig herding was common in this largely Gentile region, though pigs were unclean under the Mosaic Law. Their presence reflects the mixed cultural setting east of the Sea of Galilee.

Mrk 5:14 Those tending the pigs ran off and reported this…
Luk 8:34 When those tending the pigs saw what had happened,…

ran off into the town

The herdsmen fled in fear after witnessing the demons enter the pigs and the herd rush into the water. They went to the nearby city connected with the Gadarenes to report what had happened.

Jhn 4:28 Then the woman left her water jar, went back…
Mat 28:8 So they hurried away from the tomb in fear and great joy,…

and reported all this,

As eyewitnesses, they told the townspeople about the loss of the herd and Jesus’ authority over the demons.

Jhn 4:29 Come, see a man who told me everything I ever did.…
Luk 8:36 Meanwhile, those who had seen it reported…

including the account of the demon-possessed men.

The men’s restoration was central to the report. Those once violent, isolated, and controlled by demons had been delivered by Jesus’ command.

Mrk 5:15 When they came to Jesus, they saw the man…
Luk 8:35 So the people went out to see what had happened.…

Then the whole town went out to meet Jesus.

News of the healing of the two demon-possessed men and the destruction of the herd of pigs spread quickly through the surrounding region. The people came together to see the One whose authority had overcome forces no one else could restrain.

Jhn 4:30 So they left the town and made their way toward Jesus.
Luk 8:35 So the people went out to see what had happened.…
Mrk 5:14 Those tending the pigs ran off and reported this…

And when they saw Him,

Their encounter with Jesus confirmed the report of His power. Yet the restored men and the deliverance they had witnessed did not overcome their alarm over the loss of the pigs and the disruption His presence had brought.

Mrk 9:15 As soon as all the people saw Jesus, they were filled…
Jhn 20:20 After He had said this, He showed them His hands…
Jhn 6:19 When they had rowed about three or four miles, …

they begged Him to leave their region.

Fearing His authority and concerned about the economic loss, the townspeople asked Jesus to depart. Their response rejected the presence of the One who had brought deliverance to men long oppressed by demons.

Mrk 5:17 And the people began to beg Jesus to leave their region.
Luk 8:37 Then all the people of the region of the Gerasenes…
