Jeremiah 11

The Broken Covenant

This is the word

God’s message carries divine authority and reveals His will for Judah.

Jer 1:4 The word of the LORD came to me, saying:
Ezk 1:3 The word of the LORD came directly to Ezekiel the priest…
Zec 1:1 In the eighth month of the second year of Darius,…

that came to Jeremiah

Jeremiah served during the final decades of Judah before the Babylonian exile, confronting the nation’s idolatry, injustice, and covenant unfaithfulness. Though often opposed, he faithfully delivered God’s warnings and promises.

Jer 7:1 This is the word that came to Jeremiah from the LORD…
Jer 30:1 This is the word that came to Jeremiah from the LORD:
Jer 34:1 This is the word that came to Jeremiah from the LORD…

from the LORD:

The message came from the covenant God of Israel, who remained faithful to the commitments He had made with His people and held them accountable for their disobedience.

Amo 3:7 Surely the Lord GOD does nothing without revealing His plan…
2Pe 1:21 For no such prophecy was ever brought forth by the will…

“Listen to the words of this covenant

God directs Jeremiah to proclaim the covenant given to Israel through Moses, with its promises for obedience and judgment for rebellion. Judah’s crisis resulted from abandoning these binding obligations.

Deu 29:1 These are the words of the covenant that the LORD…
Exo 24:7 Then he took the Book of the Covenant and read it…
Deu 31:11 when all Israel comes before the LORD your God…

and tell them to the men of Judah

The people of the southern kingdom remained responsible for the covenant inherited from their fathers. Despite periods of reform, they had returned to idolatry and disobedience.

2Ch 34:30 And he went up to the house of the LORD with all the people…
2Ki 23:2 And he went up to the house of the LORD with all the people…

and the residents of Jerusalem.

Jerusalem, home to the temple and the royal throne, stood at the center of Judah’s national and spiritual life. Its inhabitants bore particular responsibility because God’s worship had been established in their midst, yet the city had become marked by covenant unfaithfulness.

Jer 25:2 So the prophet Jeremiah spoke to all the people of Judah…
Jer 17:25 then kings and princes will enter through the gates…
Zep 1:4 I will stretch out My hand against Judah…

You must tell them that this is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says:

Jeremiah speaks under divine commission, not personal authority. The LORD identifies Himself as Israel’s covenant God, the One who delivered the nation and bound them to Himself at Sinai. The announcement carries the full authority of the God to whom Judah remains accountable.

1Ki 14:7 Go, tell Jeroboam that this is what the LORD says:…
2Ki 22:15 And Huldah said to them, “This is what the LORD,…
Exo 5:1 After that, Moses and Aaron went to Pharaoh and said…

Cursed is the man who does not obey the words of this covenant,

The covenant required Israel to obey God’s commands, with blessing promised for faithfulness and judgment for rebellion. Judah’s persistent disobedience had violated that covenant and placed the nation under its stated curse: the loss of God’s protection and the coming consequences of judgment. The curse also reveals sin’s deadly seriousness and the need for the redemption Christ would provide.

Deu 27:26 Cursed is he who does not put the words of this law…
Gal 3:10 All who rely on works of the law are under a curse.…
Deu 28:15 If, however, you do not obey the LORD your God…

which I commanded your forefathers

God refers to the covenant made with Israel after He delivered their ancestors from Egypt. At Sinai, He set Israel apart as His covenant people and gave them His law.

Jer 7:22-23 For when I brought your fathers out of the land of Egypt,…
Psa 78:5 For He established a testimony in Jacob,…

when I brought them out of the land of Egypt,

Israel’s existence as a nation began with God’s deliverance from Egyptian slavery. Their covenant obligation rested on His prior act of rescue and faithfulness.

Exo 20:2 I am the LORD your God, who brought you out…
Deu 5:6 I am the LORD your God, who brought you out…

out of the iron furnace,

Egypt’s oppression was severe and crushing, like the heat of a furnace. God brought Israel out of that suffering to form and preserve them as His people.

Deu 4:20 Yet the LORD has taken you and brought you out…
1Ki 8:51 For they are Your people and Your inheritance;…

saying, ‘Obey Me, and do everything I command you,

The covenant required Israel to hear God’s voice and live according to His commands. Their obedience demonstrated loyalty to the God who had redeemed them.

Exo 24:7 Then he took the Book of the Covenant and read it…
Deu 13:4 You are to follow the LORD your God and fear Him.…

and you will be My people,

God claimed Israel as His own nation, giving them a distinct identity, calling, and responsibility among the nations.

Exo 6:7 I will take you as My own people, and I will be your God.…
Lev 26:12 I will walk among you and be your God,…

and I will be your God.’

The covenant established a personal relationship in which the Lord promised His presence, care, and protection, while Israel was to worship and serve Him alone.

Ezk 36:28 Then you will live in the land that I gave your forefathers;…
Ezk 37:27 My dwelling place will be with them; I will be their God…

This was in order to establish the oath I swore to your forefathers,

God recalls His covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, binding Himself to give their descendants a homeland. Israel’s history, including the exodus from Egypt and settlement in Canaan, unfolded under this sworn promise.

Deu 9:5 It is not because of your righteousness or uprightness…
Exo 6:8 And I will bring you into the land that I swore to give…
Deu 7:8 But because the LORD loved you and kept the oath…

to give them a land flowing with milk and honey,

Canaan was a fertile and productive land, able to sustain herds, vineyards, grain, and orchards. Its abundance stood in contrast to Israel’s former bondage in Egypt and displayed God’s provision for His people.

Exo 3:8 I have come down to rescue them from the hand of Egyptians…
Exo 13:5 And when the LORD brings you into the land of the Canaanites…
Deu 26:9 And He brought us to this place and gave us this land,…

as it is to this day.”

Though Judah faced growing danger because of its rebellion, the land remained evidence that God had kept His covenant. The people’s unfaithfulness did not cancel the reality of what God had given them.

Jos 21:43-45 Thus the LORD gave Israel all the land He had sworn…
Jos 23:14 Now behold, today I am going the way of all the earth…
1Ki 8:56 Blessed be the LORD, who has given rest to His people Israel…

“Amen, LORD,” I answered.

Jeremiah acknowledges the truth and righteousness of God’s word, responding, “Amen,” meaning “truly” or “so be it.” His response affirms the covenant history of Israel and accepts the certainty of God’s judgment for those who had broken it.

Jer 28:6 “Amen!” Jeremiah said. “May the LORD do so!…
Neh 8:6 Then Ezra blessed the LORD, the great God…
1Ch 16:36 Blessed be the LORD, the God of Israel,…

Then the LORD said to me,

Yahweh spoke directly to Jeremiah, establishing the message as God’s authoritative word to His covenant people.

Jer 7:1 This is the word that came to Jeremiah from the LORD…
Jer 1:4 The word of the LORD came to me, saying:
Ezk 2:1 “Son of man,” He said to me, “stand up on your feet”…

“Proclaim all these words

Jeremiah was to proclaim the message openly and without alteration, making a formal public declaration that emphasized its urgency and called for response.

Jer 26:2 This is what the LORD says: Stand in the courtyard…
Deu 31:11-12 when all Israel comes before the LORD your God…
Jer 36:2 Take a scroll and write on it all the words I have spoken…

in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem,

The command reached every level of Judah, the southern kingdom, from its towns to Jerusalem, its capital and the nation’s religious and political center.

Isa 40:9 Go up on a high mountain, O Zion, herald of good news.…
Jer 5:1 Go up and down the streets of Jerusalem.…
Pro 1:20-21 Wisdom calls out in the street, she lifts her voice…

saying: Hear the words of this covenant

The people were summoned to heed the covenant God had made with Israel through Moses, including its demands, promises, and warnings.

2Ki 23:2 And he went up to the house of the LORD with all the people…
Deu 5:1 Then Moses summoned all Israel and said to them:…
Deu 29:1 These are the words of the covenant that the LORD…

and carry them out.

Judah’s responsibility was not merely to listen but to obey. Their continued refusal to keep the covenant would bring the judgment God had warned of, including exile.

Deu 6:3 Hear, O Israel, and be careful to observe them…
Jos 1:8 This Book of the Law must not depart from your mouth;…
Deu 28:1 Now if you faithfully obey the voice of the LORD your God…

For from the time I brought your fathers out of the land of Egypt

God recalls the Exodus, when He delivered Israel from slavery and established them as His covenant people. Their history began with His saving power and faithful provision.

Exo 20:2 I am the LORD your God, who brought you out…
Deu 5:6 I am the LORD your God, who brought you out…
Psa 81:10 I am the LORD your God, who brought you up out of Egypt.…

until today,

From Moses’ day through Jeremiah’s ministry, the Lord had remained committed to Israel despite generations of rebellion.

Deu 9:7 Remember this, and never forget how you provoked the LORD…
Deu 9:24 You have been rebelling against the LORD…

I strongly warned them again and again,

He repeatedly sent prophets and leaders to confront sin, call the nation back to the covenant, and warn of the consequences of disobedience.

Neh 9:30 You were patient with them for many years…
2Ch 36:15-16 Again and again the LORD, the God of their fathers,…
2Ki 17:13 Yet through all His prophets and seers, the LORD…

saying, ‘Obey My voice.’

Israel’s responsibility was to hear and follow the commands of the God who had redeemed them.

Exo 19:5 Now if you will indeed obey My voice and keep My covenant,…
Deu 11:27 a blessing if you obey the commandments of the LORD your God…
Deu 30:2 and when you and your children return to the LORD…

Yet they would not obey or incline their ears,

Judah’s rebellion was willful. God had made His covenant known and repeatedly called His people to hear Him, yet they refused His authority.

Zec 7:11 But they refused to pay attention and turned a stubborn…
Isa 65:12 I will destine you for the sword, and you will all kneel…
Psa 81:11 But My people would not listen to Me, and Israel would not…

but each one followed the stubbornness of his evil heart.

Their disobedience arose from inward corruption, as individuals chose their own desires and idols over the commands of the Lord.

Jer 18:12 But they will reply, ‘It is hopeless…
Jer 7:24 Yet they did not listen or incline their ear…
Jer 3:17 At that time they will call Jerusalem…

So I brought on them all the curses of this covenant

The judgments God sent—defeat, hardship, and ultimately exile—were the consequences He had warned would follow covenant unfaithfulness.

Deu 29:20-21 The LORD will never be willing to forgive him.…
Deu 28:15 If, however, you do not obey the LORD your God…
Lev 26:14-16 If, however, you fail to obey Me and to carry out…

I had commanded them to follow but they did not keep.”

Israel had received God’s commandments through Moses, meant to set them apart as His holy people, but persistently broke them. Their failure revealed the need for the New Covenant, in which God would change the hearts of His people.

Deu 5:32-33 So be careful to do as the LORD your God has commanded you;…
Neh 9:16 But they and our fathers became arrogant and stiff-necked…
Dan 9:5 we have sinned and done wrong. We have acted wickedly.…

And the LORD told me,

Jeremiah received God’s direct disclosure of Judah’s hidden rebellion, revealing what was not yet fully visible to the prophet or the public.

Jer 1:4 The word of the LORD came to me, saying:
Amo 3:7 Surely the Lord GOD does nothing without revealing His plan…
Num 12:6 He said, “Hear now My words: If there is a prophet among you…

“There is a conspiracy

The people had united in deliberate resistance to the covenant, reviving the idolatry and disobedience of their forefathers despite God’s repeated warnings.

Ezk 22:25 The conspiracy of the princes in her midst…
2Ki 15:15 As for the rest of the acts of Shallum,…
2Ki 15:30 Then Hoshea son of Elah led a conspiracy against Pekah…

among the men of Judah

The southern kingdom, entrusted with David’s line and the promises connected to it, had turned from the Lord as a people.

Jer 4:4 Circumcise yourselves to the LORD, and remove the foreskins…
2Ch 36:16 But they mocked the messengers of God, despising His words…
Mic 1:5 All this is for the transgression of Jacob…

and the residents of Jerusalem.

Even Jerusalem, where the temple stood and where God’s law was publicly known, shared in the rebellion.

Jer 22:2 Hear the word of the LORD, O king of Judah…
Zep 1:4 I will stretch out My hand against Judah…
Isa 5:3 And now, O dwellers of Jerusalem and men of Judah,…

They have returned to the sins of their forefathers

Israel and Judah repeated the rebellion of earlier generations, from the wilderness years onward. Rather than learning from God’s judgments and mercies, they continued the same pattern of unbelief, idolatry, and covenant unfaithfulness.

Jdg 2:19 But when the judge died, the Israelites became corrupt…
Psa 78:57 They turned back and were faithless like their fathers,…

who refused to obey My words.

Their disobedience was willful. God had given His law through Moses and repeatedly sent prophets to call His people back, but they rejected His commands and ignored His warnings.

2Ki 17:14 But they would not listen, and they stiffened their necks…
Deu 9:23 And when the LORD sent you out from Kadesh-barnea…

They have followed other gods to serve them.

The people adopted the idols and religious practices of surrounding nations, giving worship and service to false gods instead of the Lord. Such idolatry violated their exclusive covenant relationship with Him.

Deu 8:19 If you ever forget the LORD your God and go after…
Jdg 2:12 Thus they forsook the LORD, the God of their fathers,…

The house of Israel and the house of Judah

Both the northern kingdom of Israel and the southern kingdom of Judah shared in this guilt. Though divided politically after Solomon’s reign, both kingdoms turned from the Lord and practiced idolatry.

Jer 31:31 Behold, the days are coming, declares the LORD,…
Jer 3:18 In those days the house of Judah will walk with…

have broken the covenant I made with their fathers.

They violated the covenant established at Sinai, which required faithful obedience and exclusive worship of the Lord. Their persistent rebellion brought the covenant judgments God had warned would follow, including national ruin and exile.

2Ki 17:15 They rejected His statutes and the covenant…
Jer 31:32 It will not be like the covenant I made with their fathers…

Therefore this is what the LORD says:

God announces His settled judgment through Jeremiah, who speaks as His appointed prophet to Judah.

Jer 6:21 Therefore this is what the LORD says: …
Amo 7:17 Therefore this is what the LORD says: ‘Your wife……
2Sa 12:11 This is what the LORD says: ‘I will raise up adversity…

‘I am about to bring upon them a disaster that they cannot escape.

Judah’s long pattern of idolatry and covenant rebellion would bring the Babylonian invasion, the destruction of Jerusalem, and exile. The judgment was no longer avoidable because the nation had persistently refused God’s warnings.

Jer 18:11 Now therefore, tell the men of Judah and the residents…
1Th 5:3 While people are saying, “Peace and security,”…
Ezk 7:5 This is what the Lord GOD says: ‘Disaster!…

They will cry out to Me, but I will not listen to them.

When the crisis came, Judah would seek deliverance without genuine repentance. Their repeated rejection of the LORD had brought them to the point where He would carry out the judgment He had declared.

Mic 3:4 Then they will cry out to the LORD, but He will not answer…
Jer 14:12 Although they may fast, I will not listen to their cry;…
Pro 1:28 Then they will call on me, but I will not answer;…

Then the cities of Judah and the residents of Jerusalem will go and cry out to the gods

Judah’s towns and Jerusalem’s inhabitants had embraced widespread idolatry, abandoning the Lord who had covenanted with them. Their devotion to foreign gods had become a national sin rather than an isolated practice.

Jdg 10:14 Go and cry out to the gods you have chosen.…
1Ki 18:26-27 And they took the bull that was given them, prepared it…
Jer 2:28 But where are the gods you made for yourselves?…

to which they have been burning incense,

They had offered acts of worship to false deities, adopting practices associated with the surrounding nations in direct violation of God’s commands. Their incense offerings revealed sustained and deliberate unfaithfulness.

2Ki 23:5 Josiah also did away with the idolatrous priests…
Jer 44:17-19 Instead, we will do everything we vowed to do…
2Ch 28:4 And he sacrificed and burned incense on the high places,…

but these gods certainly will not save them

The idols they trusted possessed no power to protect, deliver, or answer them. In the hour of need, the emptiness of their worship would be exposed.

Isa 45:20 Come, gather together, and draw near, you fugitives…
Psa 115:4-8 Their idols are silver and gold, made by the hands of men.…
1Sa 12:21 Do not turn aside after worthless things…

in their time of disaster.

The coming disaster was God’s judgment through Babylon’s invasion, the destruction of Jerusalem, and the exile of Judah. Their false gods would fail precisely when they were most needed.

Pro 1:26-28 in turn I will mock your calamity; I will sneer…
Ezk 7:19 They will throw their silver into the streets…
Zep 1:18 Neither their silver nor their gold will be able…

Your gods are indeed as numerous as your cities, O Judah;

Judah’s idolatry had become widespread, with local communities adopting and serving false gods alongside, or in place of, the LORD. Such syncretism violated the covenant and revealed the nation’s abandonment of exclusive devotion to God.

Jer 2:28 But where are the gods you made for yourselves?…
2Ch 28:25 In every city of Judah he built high places to offer incense…
Hos 10:1 Israel was a luxuriant vine, yielding fruit for himself.…

the altars of shame you have set up—

These unauthorized shrines stood as evidence of Judah’s corruption. Often established at high places and connected with pagan rites, they brought dishonor rather than blessing upon the people and the land.

Hos 10:8 The high places of Aven will be destroyed—…
Hos 9:10 I found Israel like grapes in the wilderness…
2Ki 23:15 He even pulled down the altar at Bethel,…

the altars to burn incense to Baal—

Baal worship had deeply entered Judah, despite the LORD’s repeated warnings. Incense, which belonged in the worship appointed by God, was offered to a Canaanite fertility deity whose worship was associated with practices forbidden by the law.

2Ki 23:5 Josiah also did away with the idolatrous priests…
2Ki 21:3-5 For he rebuilt the high places that his father…
2Ch 33:3-5 For he rebuilt the high places that his father Hezekiah…

are as many as the streets of Jerusalem.’

Even Jerusalem, the city chosen for God’s temple, was filled with idolatrous altars. The scale of the rebellion showed why judgment was approaching: Judah had multiplied objects of worship while refusing to return to the LORD.

Ezk 16:24-25 you built yourself a mound and made yourself a lofty shrine…
Ezk 16:31 But when you built your mounds at the head of every street…

As for you, do not pray for these people.

God forbids Jeremiah from interceding for Judah because the nation’s idolatry, injustice, and covenant rebellion had reached the point of certain judgment. Though prophets had often pleaded for Israel, Judah’s continued refusal to repent meant that the Babylonian judgment would not be delayed.

Jer 7:16 As for you, do not pray for these people…
Jer 14:11 Then the LORD said to me, “Do not pray for the well-being…
Jer 15:1 Then the LORD said to me: “Even if Moses and Samuel…

Do not raise up a cry or a prayer on their behalf,

The repeated command stresses the finality of God’s decision. Public cries for help and personal petitions could not avert the consequences of generations of rebellion while the people continued in their sin.

Exo 32:11-14 But Moses sought the favor of the LORD his God, saying,…
Gen 18:22-33 And the two men turned away and went toward Sodom,…
1Sa 12:23 As for me, far be it from me that I should sin…

for I will not be listening

God’s refusal to hear does not reflect indifference but judicial judgment. Judah had rejected His warnings, broken the covenant, and trusted false gods; therefore, He would withdraw the protection they presumed upon.

Isa 1:15 When you spread out your hands in prayer…
Mic 3:4 Then they will cry out to the LORD, but He will not answer…
Psa 66:18 If I had cherished iniquity in my heart, the Lord would not…

when they call out to Me in their time of disaster.

When Babylon’s invasion brought siege, destruction, and exile, desperate appeals would not replace genuine repentance. Judah would face the judgment repeatedly announced through Jeremiah.

Pro 1:28 Then they will call on me, but I will not answer;…
Jer 2:27-28 say to a tree, ‘You are my father,’ and to a stone…
Hos 5:6 They go with their flocks and herds to seek the LORD…

What right has My beloved in My house,

Judah, once bound to the Lord in covenant, had defiled the temple through persistent idolatry, injustice, and rebellion. Their presence at the sanctuary contradicted the life they practiced beyond it.

Isa 1:12-15 When you come to appear before Me, who has required this…
Mat 21:13 And he declared to them, “It is written…
Psa 50:16-17 To the wicked, however, God says,…

having carried out so many evil schemes?

The nation’s sins were deliberate and widespread, including worship of foreign gods and practices forbidden by God. Their plans and conduct showed continued resistance to His commands.

Mic 2:1 Woe to those who devise iniquity and plot evil on their beds…
Pro 6:12-14 A worthless person, a wicked man, walks…
Psa 36:4 Even on his bed he plots wickedness; he sets himself…

Can consecrated meat avert your doom?

Consecrated meat, the sacrificial offerings made in the temple, could not shield an unrepentant people from judgment. The temple rituals had become empty because Judah sought God’s favor while refusing to abandon its sin.

Hag 2:12-14 If a man carries consecrated meat in the fold of his garment…
Pro 21:27 The sacrifice of the wicked is detestable—…
1Sa 15:22-23 But Samuel declared: “Does the LORD delight in…

When you are wicked, then you rejoice.

Rather than grieving over evil, many took pleasure in it. Such hardened rebellion confirmed the justice of the judgment God was about to bring.

Pro 2:14 those who enjoy doing evil and rejoice in the twistedness…
Pro 10:23 The fool delights in shameful conduct, but…
Rom 1:32 Although they know God’s righteous decree…

The LORD once called you a flourishing olive tree,

Israel had received God’s favor and care, like an olive tree valued for its beauty, endurance, and abundant yield. Olive oil supported household life, worship, and commerce, making the image a fitting picture of the blessings God had given His covenant people.

Psa 52:8 But I am like an olive tree flourishing in the house of God;…
Rom 11:24 For if you were cut from a wild olive tree,…
Hos 14:6 His shoots will sprout, and his splendor…

beautiful with well-formed fruit.

Judah was meant to display the righteous results of belonging to the LORD: faithful worship, justice, obedience, and peace. Instead, idolatry and covenant rebellion corrupted the nation’s life.

Psa 1:3 He is like a tree planted by streams of water,…
Mat 7:17-18 Likewise, every good tree bears good fruit,…
Pro 11:30 The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life…

But with a mighty roar He will set it on fire,

The God who planted and blessed Judah would also judge her. The coming invasion would not be an accident of history but the execution of His judgment against persistent sin.

Psa 18:13-14 The LORD thundered from heaven; the voice of the Most High…
Psa 50:3 Our God approaches and will not be silent!…
Ezk 19:12 But it was uprooted in fury, cast down to the ground,…

and its branches will be consumed.

The destruction would reach the nation’s people, rulers, cities, and institutions. Judah’s privilege as God’s planted olive tree did not excuse unfaithfulness; her rebellion brought the devastation Jeremiah warned was near.

Jhn 15:6 If anyone does not remain in Me, he is like a branch…
Isa 27:11 When its limbs are dry, they are broken off.…
Ezk 15:6-7 Therefore this is what the Lord GOD says:…

The LORD of Hosts, who planted you,

The God who established Israel and Judah as His covenant people had cared for them as a gardener tends what he has planted.

Jer 2:21 I had planted you like a choice vine from the very best seed…
Psa 80:8 You uprooted a vine from Egypt; You drove out the nations…
Isa 5:2 He waited for the vineyard to yield good grapes…

has decreed disaster against you

Their coming judgment was certain. Babylon’s invasion and exile would bring the consequences of persistent rebellion against the Lord.

Jer 18:11 Now therefore, tell the men of Judah and the residents…
2Ki 21:12 this is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says:…
Amo 3:6 If a ram’s horn sounds in a city, do the people not tremble?…

on account of the evil that the house of Israel and the house of Judah have brought upon themselves,

Both kingdoms had forsaken the covenant through idolatry, injustice, and disobedience. Their ruin resulted from their own actions, not from any failure in God’s faithfulness.

Jer 32:30 For the children of Israel and of Judah…
2Ki 17:13-14 Yet through all His prophets and seers, the LORD…
2Ch 36:15-16 Again and again the LORD, the God of their fathers,…

provoking Me to anger by burning incense to Baal.”

Worship offered to Baal openly violated Israel’s obligation to worship the Lord alone. Their adoption of Canaanite religion was covenant betrayal and brought righteous judgment.

2Ki 23:5 Josiah also did away with the idolatrous priests…
1Ki 16:31-33 And as if it were not enough for him to walk…
Jdg 2:11-13 And the Israelites did evil in the sight of the LORD…

A Plot against Jeremiah

And the LORD informed me, so I knew.

God revealed to Jeremiah the secret opposition forming against him. Though the conspirators concealed their plans, their intentions were fully known to the LORD, who made them known to His prophet.

Amo 3:7 Surely the Lord GOD does nothing without revealing His plan…
Dan 2:28 But there is a God in heaven who reveals mysteries,…
1Co 2:10 But God has revealed it to us by the Spirit.…

Then You showed me their deeds.

The revelation concerned the actions of those who rejected Jeremiah’s message and sought to silence him. God’s warning prepared Jeremiah for the danger ahead and confirmed that the hostility he faced was directed not merely against him, but against the word of the LORD he proclaimed.

Jer 16:17 For My eyes are on all their ways. They are not hidden…
Psa 90:8 You have set our iniquities before You, our secret sins…
Pro 15:3 The eyes of the LORD are in every place…

For I was like a gentle lamb led to slaughter;

Jeremiah had faithfully delivered God’s warnings, unaware that men from his own hometown were planning his death. His innocence and vulnerability resemble a lamb taken for sacrifice, anticipating Christ’s willing suffering as the Lamb of God.

Act 8:32 The eunuch was reading this passage of Scripture:…
Psa 44:22 Yet for Your sake we face death all day long;…

I did not know that they had plotted against me:

The conspiracy was hidden from Jeremiah until the Lord revealed it. His opponents rejected not merely the prophet but the message God had given him.

Mat 7:19 Every tree that does not bear good fruit…
Luk 13:7 So he said to the keeper of the vineyard…

The plot involved murder. They intended to remove him from Israel entirely, treating his prophetic ministry as a threat to their security and way of life.

Isa 53:8 By oppression and judgment He was taken away,…
Psa 52:5 Surely God will bring you down to everlasting ruin;…

that his name may be remembered no more.”

They hoped to erase Jeremiah’s reputation and ensure that his message would disappear with him. Their plan failed: God preserved His servant, and Jeremiah’s words remain as a testimony to Judah’s rebellion and God’s faithfulness.

Jer 17:10 I, the LORD, search the heart; I examine the mind…
Rev 2:23 Then I will strike her children dead, and all the churches…
Psa 7:9 Put an end to the evil of the wicked, but…

let me see Your vengeance upon them,

Jeremiah asks God to punish those who reject God’s message and seek to destroy His servant, leaving judgment in God’s hands rather than pursuing personal retaliation.

Psa 58:10 The righteous will rejoice when they see they are avenged;…
Psa 94:1 O LORD, God of vengeance, O God of vengeance, shine forth.
Deu 32:35 Vengeance is Mine; I will repay. In due time…

for to You I have committed my cause.

Having brought his case before the Lord, Jeremiah trusts God to defend him and uphold His righteous purpose.

Jer 20:12 O LORD of Hosts, who examines the righteous,…
Lam 3:59 You have seen, O LORD, the wrong done to me;…
Psa 37:5 Commit your way to the LORD; trust in Him…

Therefore this is what the LORD says concerning the people of Anathoth

Anathoth lay in Benjamin a few miles northeast of Jerusalem and was assigned to the priests as a Levitical city, meaning it was designated for the priests. Jeremiah’s family came from there, making the opposition especially painful: those seeking to silence him were his own townsmen.

Ezr 2:23 the men of Anathoth, 128;
Jer 1:1 These are the words of Jeremiah son of Hilkiah,…
Jos 21:18 Anathoth, and Almon—four cities, together with…

who are seeking your life

The men of Anathoth were not merely disagreeing with Jeremiah’s message; they were plotting to kill him. Their hostility showed their rejection of the word God had given him to proclaim.

Exo 4:19 Now the LORD had said to Moses in Midian, “Go back to Egypt,…
1Sa 20:1 Then David fled from Naioth in Ramah. He came to Jonathan…
Psa 63:9 But those who seek my life to destroy it…

and saying, “You must not prophesy in the name of the LORD,

They demanded that Jeremiah stop speaking under the LORD’s authority. Rather than repent at God’s warning, they sought to remove the messenger whose preaching exposed their sin.

Amo 2:12 But you made the Nazirites drink wine…
Amo 7:12-13 And Amaziah said to Amos, “Go away, you seer!…
Mic 2:6 “Do not preach,” they preach. “Do not preach these things; ……

or you will die by our hand.”

Their threat revealed the depth of their rebellion against God. Jeremiah’s danger came from his own community, anticipating the persecution and rejection that would mark the ministry of many faithful servants of God.

Jer 26:8-11 and as soon as he had finished telling all the people…
2Ch 24:20-22 Then the Spirit of God came upon Zechariah son of Jehoiada…
Mat 23:37 O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, who kills the prophets…

So this is what the LORD of Hosts says:

God speaks as the sovereign ruler over all heavenly armies, declaring judgment against the men of Anathoth who had plotted against Jeremiah and refused the Lord’s warning.

Mal 3:1 “Behold, I will send My messenger, who will prepare the way”…
Zec 8:14 For this is what the LORD of Hosts says:…

“I will punish them.

Their opposition to God’s prophet was part of Judah’s wider rebellion against the covenant. The coming judgment would confirm the warnings God had repeatedly given through His servants.

Ezk 7:9 I will not look on you with pity, nor will I spare you, but I will punish you for your ways…
Hos 9:9 They have deeply corrupted themselves as in the days…

Their young men will die by the sword,

The men who could defend the town would fall in war as Babylon’s armies swept through Judah. Their loss would leave the community exposed and without its strength.

Amo 4:10 I sent plagues among you like those of Egypt;…
Ezk 5:12 A third of your people will die by plague…

their sons and daughters by famine.

Siege and devastation would bring severe hunger, extending judgment beyond the fighting men to the households and future generations of Anathoth.

Ezk 5:16 When I shower you with the deadly arrows of famine…
Deu 28:53 Then you will eat the fruit of your womb,…

There will be no remnant,

God’s judgment on Anathoth would be complete. Unlike judgments in which He preserved a faithful surviving group, the town’s conspiracy against Jeremiah and rejection of God’s word brought an end without escape.

Isa 14:22 “I will rise up against them,” declares the LORD of Hosts.…
Oba 1:18 Then the house of Jacob will be a blazing fire…
Mal 4:1 “For behold, the day is coming, burning like a furnace,”…

for I will bring disaster

The coming calamity was God’s righteous response to persistent rebellion. Anathoth’s people had opposed the prophet from their own community and sought to silence the message entrusted to him.

Mic 1:12 For the dwellers of Maroth pined for good,…
Amo 3:6 If a ram’s horn sounds in a city, do the people not tremble?…
Isa 45:7 I form the light and create the darkness;…

on the people of Anathoth

Anathoth was a Levitical town in Benjamin, set aside for the priests, and Jeremiah’s hometown, located near Jerusalem. Its residents should have known and upheld God’s law, yet they turned against His messenger.

Ezr 2:23 the men of Anathoth, 128;
Neh 7:27 the men of Anathoth, 128;
Jer 1:1 These are the words of Jeremiah son of Hilkiah,…

in the year of their punishment.”

The judgment would come at the time God had appointed. Their punishment was certain, not merely a threat, and would be carried out within the larger disasters soon to fall on Judah.

Isa 34:8 For the LORD has a day of vengeance, a year of recompense…
Hos 9:7 The days of punishment have come; the days of retribution…
Mic 7:4 The best of them is like a brier; the most upright…
