This is the word that came to Jeremiah from the LORD
Jeremiah, a major prophet in the Old Testament, often received direct communication from God. This phrase emphasizes the divine origin of the message, underscoring the authority and authenticity of the prophecy. The phrase "word of the LORD" is a common biblical expression indicating a revelation from God, which is a central theme in the prophetic books. Jeremiah's role as a prophet was to convey God's messages to the people of Judah, often calling them to repentance and warning of impending judgment.

when Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon
Nebuchadnezzar II was the powerful ruler of the Neo-Babylonian Empire, reigning from 605 to 562 BC. He is a significant historical figure known for his military conquests and the expansion of Babylonian influence. His campaigns against Jerusalem are well-documented in both biblical and extra-biblical sources. Nebuchadnezzar's role in the biblical narrative is as an instrument of God's judgment against Judah for their disobedience and idolatry, fulfilling the warnings given by prophets like Jeremiah.

all his army
The mention of Nebuchadnezzar's army highlights the formidable military force that besieged Jerusalem. The Babylonian army was known for its strength and strategic prowess, which played a crucial role in the eventual fall of Jerusalem in 586 BC. This military might is a reminder of the seriousness of the threat faced by Judah and the fulfillment of prophetic warnings about the consequences of their unfaithfulness to God.

all the earthly kingdoms under his control
This phrase indicates the vastness of Nebuchadnezzar's empire, which included many vassal states and conquered territories. The Babylonian Empire was one of the most powerful empires of the ancient Near East, and its influence extended over a large geographical area. This dominance is a testament to the fulfillment of God's plan, as He used Babylon as a tool to execute judgment on the nations, including Judah.

and all the other nations
The inclusion of "all the other nations" suggests a coalition of forces or the widespread impact of Babylon's military campaigns. This reflects the historical reality of ancient Near Eastern politics, where empires often formed alliances with other nations to strengthen their military endeavors. It also underscores the comprehensive nature of the threat against Jerusalem, as it was not only Babylon but a multitude of nations that were involved in the siege.

were fighting against Jerusalem
Jerusalem, the capital of Judah, was the spiritual and political center of the Jewish people. The siege of Jerusalem was a pivotal event in biblical history, leading to the destruction of the city and the temple, and the exile of the Jewish people. This event was prophesied by Jeremiah and other prophets as a consequence of the nation's persistent sin and rebellion against God. The fall of Jerusalem marked a significant turning point in the history of Israel and Judah.

and all its surrounding cities
The mention of "all its surrounding cities" indicates that the Babylonian campaign was not limited to Jerusalem alone but affected the entire region of Judah. This widespread devastation fulfilled the prophecies of judgment pronounced by Jeremiah and others, highlighting the totality of the destruction and the severity of God's discipline. The surrounding cities, which were part of the kingdom of Judah, also faced the consequences of the nation's collective disobedience.

What Does Jeremiah 34:1 Mean
This is the word that came to Jeremiah

• Jeremiah isn’t sharing personal opinion; he is passing along a direct, fresh message from God. Just as the prophet first received his call “in the days of Josiah” (Jeremiah 1:2-4), so here, many years later, the flow of revelation continues.

• The verse reminds us that God speaks in real moments of history, anchoring His truth to specific events (compare Jeremiah 7:1; Hebrews 1:1).

from the LORD

• The source matters. Because the word is “from the LORD,” it carries absolute authority and cannot fail (2 Timothy 3:16; 2 Peter 1:21).

• Jeremiah’s hearers may question the prophet, but they cannot successfully resist the Lord Himself (Isaiah 1:10).

when Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon

• We are dropped into a precise historical setting: the reign of Nebuchadnezzar, the same monarch who besieged Judah in 597 BC and again in 588 BC (2 Kings 25:1; Daniel 1:1).

• God had already named this king as His chosen instrument of judgment (Jeremiah 25:9). That sovereignty undergirds the whole chapter.

all his army

• Babylon came with overwhelming force—chariots, infantry, siege works (Jeremiah 52:4).

• The Babylonians’ speed and ferocity match Habakkuk’s description of the Chaldeans who “fly like an eagle” upon their prey (Habakkuk 1:6-8).

all the earthly kingdoms under his control, and all the other nations

• Nebuchadnezzar’s coalition shows how God can marshal even pagan powers to fulfill His purposes (Daniel 2:37-38; Jeremiah 27:6-7).

• Smaller vassal states joined the campaign, proving that human alliances are no match for divine decree (Habakkuk 1:10).

were fighting against Jerusalem

• This is the climactic siege. Earlier warnings (Jeremiah 21:2; 32:2) have now become deadly reality.

• The city that once housed God’s temple is under disciplined assault because it refused repeated calls to repent (Lamentations 1:1).

and all its surrounding cities

• The outlying towns—Lachish, Azekah, and others (Jeremiah 34:7)—suffered with the capital, showing that sin’s fallout is never isolated (Jeremiah 19:15).

• Jeremiah had prophesied that “this whole land” would become a ruin and a horror (Jeremiah 25:9), and that prophecy is unfolding detail by detail.

summary

Jeremiah 34:1 sets the stage for a solemn message by rooting it in a moment of national crisis: Babylon’s vast coalition is besieging Jerusalem and every nearby town. God’s word comes to Jeremiah right then, underscoring that divine revelation speaks into real history, exposes stubborn sin, and confirms that the Lord reigns over kings and armies alike. The verse reminds us that when God speaks, His purposes stand, and every human power—no matter how imposing—ultimately serves His sovereign plan.

XXXIV.

(1) When Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon . . .--The prophecy that follows is probably a fuller statement of that in Jeremiah 32:3-4, and delivered shortly before it, being referred to there as the cause of his imprisonment. In the form of the name Nebuchadnezzar (n instead of r, as in Jeremiah 24:1; Jeremiah 25:1), we may probably trace the hand of a later transcriber. The same hand is, perhaps, traceable in the accumulation of substantives after the manner of Daniel 3:7; Daniel 5:19. . . .

Verse 1. - All the kingdoms of the earth; etc.; rather, of the land. The accumulation of phrases is to convey the composite character of the Chaldean army. And against all the cities thereof; i.e. the fortified cities which still held out - against Lachish and Azekah, if no more (per. 7).
