Isaiah 5
Berean Study Bible

The Song of the Vineyard

I will sing for my beloved a song of his vineyard:

Isaiah begins with a song that presents God’s relationship with Israel through the image of a vineyard. The form draws listeners into a familiar picture before revealing the nation’s failure to produce the justice and righteousness God required.

Psa 80:8-16 You uprooted a vine from Egypt; You drove out the nations…
Deu 32:1-2 Give ear, O heavens, and I will speak; hear, O earth…
Sng 2:16 My beloved is mine and I am his; he pastures his flock…

My beloved had a vineyard

The beloved is the LORD, and the vineyard is Israel, the people He chose, protected, and established in the land. God’s care for Israel reflected His covenant with them and carried the expectation that they would live faithfully before Him.

Luk 20:9 Then He proceeded to tell the people this parable:…
Mat 21:33 Listen to another parable: There was a landowner…
Mrk 12:1 Then Jesus began to speak to them in parables:…

on a very fertile hill.

God placed Israel in a land suited for abundance and blessing. The fruitful setting emphasizes that Israel’s later corruption could not be blamed on neglect or lack of provision, but on the nation’s refusal to answer God’s care with faithful obedience.

Deu 11:11-12 But the land that you are crossing the Jordan to possess…
Ezk 17:8 It had been planted in good soil by abundant waters……

He dug it up and cleared the stones

God’s care for Israel is pictured in the demanding work of preparing a vineyard. He removed what would hinder its growth and provided the conditions needed for it to flourish as His covenant people.

Psa 80:8-9 You uprooted a vine from Egypt; You drove out the nations…
Jer 4:3 Break up your unplowed ground, and do not sow among the thorns.…

and planted the finest vines.

Israel had been chosen and established by God for a distinct purpose: to reflect His righteousness among the nations. Nothing necessary for faithful fruitfulness had been withheld.

Jer 2:21 I had planted you like a choice vine from the very best seed…
Ezk 17:8 It had been planted in good soil by abundant waters……

He built a watchtower in the middle

The tower portrays God’s protection and oversight. Israel was not abandoned or left exposed; the Lord had guarded and sustained the nation throughout its history.

Mat 21:33 Listen to another parable: There was a landowner…
Mrk 12:1 Then Jesus began to speak to them in parables:…

and dug out a winepress as well.

A winepress was prepared because a harvest was expected. God looked for the practical results of covenant faithfulness—justice, righteousness, and obedience.

Jol 3:13 Swing the sickle, for the harvest is ripe.…
Isa 63:3 I have trodden the winepress alone, and no one…

He waited for the vineyard to yield good grapes,

God patiently gave Israel opportunity to live according to His law and fulfill the purpose for which He had planted them.

Mat 21:34 When the harvest time drew near, he sent his servants…
Jhn 15:2 He cuts off every branch in Me that bears no fruit,…

but the fruit it produced was sour!

Instead of righteousness, Israel produced sin, oppression, and injustice. The contrast exposes the nation’s guilt: its failure did not result from neglect by the vineyard owner, but from its own unfaithfulness.

Jer 31:29 In those days, it will no longer be said:…
Deu 32:32-33 But their vine is from the vine of Sodom…

“And now, O dwellers of Jerusalem and men of Judah,

Isaiah turns from the song of the vineyard to address the people directly. Jerusalem and Judah together encompass the nation’s leaders, citizens, landowners, and laborers. Though God had established them in a fruitful land and given them His law, the nation had become marked by idolatry, oppression, and injustice.

Jer 4:4 Circumcise yourselves to the LORD, and remove the foreskins…
Zep 1:4 I will stretch out My hand against Judah…
Mic 1:5 All this is for the transgression of Jacob…

I exhort you to judge

God calls the people to consider His case honestly. They were not ignorant of His goodness or of their covenant obligations. Their own conscience and knowledge of the law testified that God had dealt faithfully with them.

1Sa 24:12 May the LORD judge between you and me, and may the LORD…
Gen 16:5 Sarai said to Abram, “May the wrong done to me be upon you!”…
Gen 31:53 May the God of Abraham and the God of Nahor,…

between Me and My vineyard.

The vineyard represents Judah, planted, protected, and cultivated by the Lord. God had every right to expect righteousness and justice from His people, yet they had produced rebellion and violence. The coming judgment would be shown to be just, because Judah’s ruin resulted from its refusal to bear the fruit God required.

Jer 2:21 I had planted you like a choice vine from the very best seed…
Psa 80:8-16 You uprooted a vine from Egypt; You drove out the nations…
Mat 21:33-41 Listen to another parable: There was a landowner…

What more could have been done for My vineyard than I have done for it?

God had given Israel every advantage: a fruitful land, His law, priesthood, sacrifices, prophets, protection, and repeated calls to repentance. Like a carefully tended vineyard, Israel had been planted and preserved for the purpose of producing justice and righteousness. Their rebellion could not be blamed on any failure in God’s care or faithfulness.

Psa 80:8-16 You uprooted a vine from Egypt; You drove out the nations…
Isa 27:2-3 In that day: “Sing about a fruitful vineyard.…
Mat 21:33-41 Listen to another parable: There was a landowner…

Why, when I expected sweet grapes, did it bring forth sour fruit?

Instead of the righteousness God required, Judah produced idolatry, oppression, violence, and corrupt worship. The nation enjoyed covenant blessings while disregarding the God who gave them. Their bitter fruit brought the judgment Isaiah foretold, including the loss of the land and exile.

Deu 32:32-33 But their vine is from the vine of Sodom…
Jer 2:21 I had planted you like a choice vine from the very best seed…
Mat 7:17-20 Likewise, every good tree bears good fruit,…

Now I will tell you what I am about to do to My vineyard:

God announces His judgment against Israel, the vineyard He planted and cared for. Though He had provided every advantage, the nation produced injustice and rebellion rather than righteousness.

Jer 12:10 Many shepherds have destroyed My vineyard;…
Ezk 15:6 Therefore this is what the Lord GOD says:…

I will take away its hedge,

God would remove the protection that had preserved His people from surrounding nations and enemies.

Psa 80:12 Why have You broken down its walls, so that…
Psa 89:40 You have broken down all his walls; You have reduced…

and it will be consumed;

Without His restraint, Israel would become vulnerable to devastation, as foreign powers would overrun the land.

Ezk 15:4-5 No, it is cast into the fire for fuel. The fire…
Deu 32:22 For a fire has been kindled by My anger,…

I will tear down its wall,

The security God had established around His covenant people would be dismantled because of their persistent sin.

2Ki 25:10 And the whole army of the Chaldeans under…
Pro 24:31 Thorns had grown up everywhere, thistles had covered…

and it will be trampled.

The land and its people would suffer humiliation and ruin under invading armies, fulfilling the judgment warned throughout Israel’s history.

Luk 21:24 They will fall by the edge of the sword and be led captive…
Rev 11:2 But exclude the courtyard outside the temple.…

I will make it a wasteland,

God declares judgment on Israel for its persistent rebellion. The vineyard once planted, protected, and prepared for fruitfulness would be left desolate, anticipating the devastation, invasion, and exile that followed the nation’s unfaithfulness.

Ezk 6:14 I will stretch out My hand against them,…
Jer 4:27 For this is what the LORD says: “The whole land…
Mic 7:13 Then the earth will become desolate because of…

neither pruned nor cultivated,

The removal of care pictures God’s withdrawal of the favor and order Israel had rejected. Without cultivation, the vineyard would no longer produce the fruit expected of it.

Lev 25:4-5 But in the seventh year there shall be a Sabbath…
Exo 23:10-11 For six years you are to sow your land and gather…
2Ch 36:21 So the land enjoyed its Sabbath rest all the days…

and thorns and briers will grow up.

The land would become overrun and unproductive, reflecting the curse and disorder brought by sin. What had been a carefully tended vineyard would bear the visible results of judgment.

Isa 7:23-25 And on that day, in every place that had a thousand vines…
Heb 6:8 But land that produces thorns and thistles is worthless,…
Gen 3:18 Both thorns and thistles it will yield for you,…

I will command the clouds that rain shall not fall on it.”

God, who governs creation, would withhold the rain necessary for the vineyard’s life. The drought portrays both literal judgment on the land and the loss of God’s blessing upon His people.

For the vineyard of the LORD of Hosts is the house of Israel,

Israel was the people God had chosen, protected, and established in the land. Like a carefully tended vineyard, the nation had received His law, worship, leadership, and material blessing, yet it failed to yield the obedience He required.

Psa 80:8-11 You uprooted a vine from Egypt; You drove out the nations…
Jer 2:21 I had planted you like a choice vine from the very best seed…
Hos 10:1 Israel was a luxuriant vine, yielding fruit for himself.…

and the men of Judah are the plant of His delight.

Judah remained the center of David’s royal line and the temple in Jerusalem. God’s delight in Judah reflected His covenant care, but that privilege also brought responsibility.

Jer 24:6-7 I will build them up and not tear them down…
Ezk 34:29 And I will raise up for them a garden of renown…

He looked for justice, but saw bloodshed;

God required righteous judgment, protection for the weak, and honesty in public life. Instead, the land was marked by violence, corruption, and the abuse of those without power.

for righteousness, but heard a cry of distress.

Rather than faithful living, Judah produced suffering among the poor and oppressed. Their cries exposed a nation that had rejected God’s standards, bringing the judgment announced through Isaiah.

Woes to the Wicked

Woe to you who add house to house

Isaiah pronounces judgment on those who gained wealth by acquiring the homes and inheritance of others. In Israel, land belonged ultimately to the Lord and was allotted to families as a lasting inheritance. Wealthy men who absorbed smaller properties ignored that order and profited from the hardship of their countrymen.

Mic 2:2 They covet fields and seize them; they take away houses.…
Jer 22:13 Woe to him who builds his palace by unrighteousness,…
Hab 2:9 Woe to him who builds his house by unjust gain,…

and join field to field

By extending their estates, powerful landowners reduced other families to dependence or displacement. Land was the basis of livelihood in Judah, so such practices widened the divide between the rich and the poor and corrupted the nation’s covenant life.

Greed had no natural limit. As estates expanded, ordinary households lost the land needed to sustain themselves, leaving communities weakened and the countryside increasingly controlled by a few.

and you live alone in the land.

Those who drove others from their homes would ultimately face desolation themselves. Isaiah’s warning anticipated the judgment that would empty Judah through invasion and exile, leaving its land stripped of the people who had abused it.

Extensive planting would result in a meager harvest. The failure of the land exposed the emptiness of wealth gained through greed and injustice, as the nation’s outward prosperity could not shield it from God’s discipline.

Woe to those who rise early in the morning in pursuit of strong drink,

Isaiah announces judgment on people in Judah whose days began with drinking rather than with the responsibilities of worship, work, justice, and obedience to God. Their appetite for pleasure revealed a deeper disregard for the covenant.

Their enjoyment was joined to deliberate neglect of God’s past deliverance, present rule, and warnings of coming judgment. Though the LORD had preserved and blessed His people, they lived as though He had no claim upon them.

They refused to recognize God’s power in creation, history, providence, and the events unfolding around them. Their blindness was spiritual: they would not see that the judgment Isaiah announced was the work of the LORD against their sin.

Woe to those

Exo 23:7 Stay far away from a false accusation. Do not kill…

Therefore, as a tongue of fire consumes the straw,

Fire rapidly devours dry straw, portraying the certainty and completeness of God’s judgment upon persistent rebellion.

Mal 4:1 “For behold, the day is coming, burning like a furnace,”…
Oba 1:18 Then the house of Jacob will be a blazing fire…
Nam 1:10 For they will be entangled as with thorns…

and as dry grass shrivels in the flame,

Like grass scorched in an instant, Judah’s strength and security would vanish when judgment came.

Isa 40:7-8 The grass withers and the flowers fall when…
Jas 1:11 For the sun rises with scorching heat…
1Pe 1:24 All flesh is like grass, and all its glory…

so their roots will decay and their blossoms will blow away like dust;

The nation’s roots, representing its enduring life, would rot, while its blossoms, representing prosperity and future hope, would be scattered. Sin would bring ruin from the foundation upward.

Hos 9:16 Ephraim is struck down; their root is withered;…
Job 18:16 The roots beneath him dry up, and the branches above him…
Psa 1:4 Not so the wicked! For they are like chaff…

for they have rejected the instruction of the LORD of Hosts

Judah’s coming destruction was not arbitrary. The people had cast aside God’s revealed law and refused the covenant commands given to them.

Jer 6:19 Hear, O earth! I am bringing disaster on this people,…
2Ki 17:14-15 But they would not listen, and they stiffened their necks…
Pro 28:9 Whoever turns his ear away from hearing the law…

and despised the word of the Holy One of Israel.

Their rebellion was directed against the holy God Himself. By treating His word with contempt, they forfeited the blessings of obedience and invited the judgment Isaiah warned would come.

2Ch 36:16 But they mocked the messengers of God, despising His words…
Isa 30:12 Therefore this is what the Holy One of Israel says:…
Jer 36:23-24 And as soon as Jehudi had read three or four columns,…

Therefore the anger of the LORD burns against His people;

Judah’s persistent rebellion, idolatry, injustice, and rejection of God’s law had brought covenant judgment upon the nation. The LORD’s anger is His holy and righteous opposition to sin, not an uncontrolled passion.

Psa 106:40 So the anger of the LORD burned against His people…
Deu 29:27-28 Therefore the anger of the LORD burned against this land…
2Ch 36:16 But they mocked the messengers of God, despising His words…

His hand is raised against them to strike them down.

God Himself would act against His disobedient people, using foreign powers as instruments of discipline. His judgment was neither distant nor accidental.

Jer 21:5 And I Myself will fight against you with a mighty arm…
Ezk 6:14 I will stretch out My hand against them,…
Exo 7:5 And the Egyptians will know that I am the LORD,…

The mountains quake,

The land itself is pictured as trembling under the weight of divine judgment, emphasizing the terror and certainty of what was coming upon Judah.

Nam 1:5 The mountains quake before Him, and the hills melt away;…
Jdg 5:5 The mountains quaked before the LORD, the One of Sinai,…
Mic 1:4 The mountains will melt beneath Him,…

and the corpses lie like refuse in the streets.

The image points to the devastation of invasion, when death would be so widespread that the fallen would remain unburied. Such dishonor reflected the utter collapse of a people who had refused correction.

Jer 9:22 Declare that this is what the LORD says: “The corpses of men…
Ezk 11:6-7 You have multiplied those you killed in this city…
Lam 2:21 Both young and old lie together in the dust of the streets.…

Despite all this, His anger is not turned away;

Earlier judgments had not produced lasting repentance. Because the nation continued in sin, the full measure of discipline had not yet been completed.

Isa 9:12 Aram from the east and Philistia from the west…
Jer 4:8 So put on sackcloth, mourn and wail, for the fierce anger…

His hand is still upraised.

Further judgment remained imminent. Yet the continued warning also showed that Judah was being called to turn from its rebellion before destruction came.

Isa 10:4 Nothing will remain but to crouch among the captives…
Isa 9:17 Therefore the Lord takes no pleasure in their young men…
Isa 9:21 Manasseh devours Ephraim, and Ephraim Manasseh;…

He lifts a banner for the distant nations

God summons a foreign army as easily as a commander signals his troops. The nations are under His rule, and He will use them to judge Judah for its persistent rebellion. The immediate historical setting points to the rising Assyrian power, whose armies would advance from far beyond Israel’s borders.

Isa 11:12 He will raise a banner for the nations and gather…
Isa 49:22 This is what the Lord GOD says: “Behold,…
Isa 13:2 Raise a banner on a barren hilltop; call aloud to them.…

and whistles for those at the ends of the earth.

No distance limits God’s authority. He calls the invading force, and it comes at His command. What Judah may have regarded as political events or military threats would in fact be the outworking of God’s judgment.

Isa 7:18 On that day the LORD will whistle to the flies…
Zec 10:8 I will whistle for them to gather, for I have redeemed them;…
Deu 30:4 Even if you have been banished to the farthest horizon,…

Behold—how speedily and swiftly they come!

The invading army will not be delayed or turned aside. Its rapid approach warns that judgment is certain and near, bringing the consequences of Judah’s sin.

Deu 28:49 The LORD will bring a nation from afar…
Hab 1:8 Their horses are swifter than leopards, fiercer than wolves…
Jer 4:13 Behold, he advances like the clouds,…

None of them grows weary or stumbles;

The invading force God summons against Judah advances with relentless strength. No fatigue, confusion, or weakness delays its march, for it serves as the appointed instrument of His judgment.

Isa 40:30-31 Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble…
Pro 4:12 When you walk, your steps will not be impeded;…

no one slumbers or sleeps.

The troops remain alert and ready, moving with the discipline needed for a swift military campaign. Judah will not escape through the enemy’s carelessness or delay.

Psa 121:3-4 He will not allow your foot to slip; your Protector…
Isa 56:10 Israel’s watchmen are blind, they are all oblivious;…

No belt is loose

Every soldier is prepared for battle, with clothing and equipment secured for the march. The army arrives organized, equipped, and ready to carry out its mission.

Isa 11:5 Righteousness will be the belt around His hips,…
Eph 6:14 Stand firm then, with the belt of truth,…

and no sandal strap is broken.

Nothing hinders its movement across the long roads and rough terrain leading to Judah. The completeness of its equipment pictures the certainty and effectiveness of the judgment God has decreed.

Deu 29:5 For forty years I led you in the wilderness…
Exo 12:11 This is how you are to eat it: You must be fully dressed…

Their arrows are sharpened,

The invading army is equipped for lethal, accurate warfare, leaving no doubt about its readiness to strike.

Jer 51:11 Sharpen the arrows! Fill the quivers! The LORD has aroused…
Psa 45:5 Your arrows pierce the hearts of the king’s foes;…
Isa 49:2 He made My mouth like a sharp sword; He hid Me…

and all their bows are strung.

Their weapons are prepared for immediate use, portraying a force already poised for battle rather than one still gathering or hesitating.

Psa 11:2 For behold, the wicked bend their bows.…
Psa 7:12-13 If one does not repent, God will sharpen His sword;…
Psa 37:14 The wicked have drawn the sword and bent the bow…

The hooves of their horses are like flint;

The horses advance with unyielding strength, suggesting a military force that cannot easily be slowed or turned aside.

Jer 47:3 at the sound of the galloping hooves of stallions,…
Hab 1:8 Their horses are swifter than leopards, fiercer than wolves…
Jol 2:4-5 Their appearance is like that of horses, and…

their chariot wheels are like a whirlwind.

The rushing chariots bring speed, noise, and destructive force, portraying the rapid approach of the judgment God has appointed.

Isa 66:15 For behold, the LORD will come with fire—…
Jer 4:13 Behold, he advances like the clouds,…
Ezk 10:13 I heard the wheels being called “the whirling wheels.”

Their roaring is like that of a lion;

The invading army approaches with terrifying strength and authority, like a lion announcing its dominance before the attack. God’s judgment will come through a force that inspires fear and cannot be ignored.

Hos 11:10 They will walk after the LORD; He will roar like a lion.…
Psa 22:13 They open their jaws against me like lions…
Amo 3:8 The lion has roared—who will not fear?…

they roar like young lions.

Their vigor, confidence, and ferocity make them especially dangerous. They advance eagerly and relentlessly against a people weakened by rebellion against the Lord.

Psa 104:21 The young lions roar for their prey…
Nam 2:11 Where is the lions’ lair or the feeding ground…
Ezk 19:2 ‘What was your mother? A lioness among the lions!’…

They growl and seize their prey;

Like predators closing in on a helpless victim, the attackers will overpower Judah with deliberate and irresistible force. The image conveys the certainty of the coming conquest unless the nation turns from its sin.

Psa 10:9 He lies in wait like a lion in a thicket;…
Psa 17:12 like a lion greedy for prey, like a young lion…
Ezk 19:6 He prowled among the lions, and became a young lion.…

they carry it away,

Conquest will include the removal of people and possessions. Such deportations were a common practice among ancient empires, leaving defeated lands impoverished and unable to recover.

1Sa 17:34-35 David replied, “Your servant has been tending…
Jer 50:17 Israel is a scattered flock, chased away by lions.…
Mic 5:8 Then the remnant of Jacob will be among the nations,…

and no one can rescue it.

No alliance, military strength, or human ruler will be able to prevent the judgment God has appointed. Deliverance lies only in the Lord, whom Judah has forsaken.

Hos 5:14 For I am like a lion to Ephraim and like a young lion…
Deu 32:39 See now that I am He; there is no God besides Me…
Psa 50:22 Now consider this, you who forget God, lest I tear you…

In that day they will roar over it, like the roaring of the sea.

The invading enemy will descend upon Judah with the force and terror of a storm-driven sea. Assyria’s armies would sweep through the land, bringing devastation, fear, and political collapse. The roar portrays a judgment that cannot be resisted by human strength or alliances.

Isa 17:12-13 Alas, the tumult of many peoples; they rage…
Isa 51:15 For I am the LORD your God who stirs up the sea…
Jer 6:23 They grasp the bow and spear; they are cruel and merciless.…

If one looks over the land, he will see darkness and distress;

The land will be filled with suffering, confusion, and ruin. Cities, fields, and homes will bear the effects of invasion, while the people who rejected the Lord’s warnings will find no security in their wealth, leaders, or idols.

Isa 8:22 Then they will look to the earth and see only distress…
Jer 4:23-26 I looked at the earth, and it was formless and void;…
Amo 5:18 Woe to you who long for the Day of the LORD!…

even the light will be obscured by clouds.

Hope and safety will seem extinguished as judgment overshadows the nation. The darkness reflects the loss of God’s favor upon a people who persisted in sin, yet it also prepares the way for the promised light and deliverance foretold in the chapters that follow.

Jol 2:2 a day of darkness and gloom, a day of clouds and blackness.…
Ezk 30:3 For the day is near, the Day of the LORD is near.…
Zep 1:15 That day will be a day of wrath, a day of trouble…
