Berean Study Bible Moses Blesses the Twelve TribesMoses’ final blessing carries the weight of a covenant leader speaking God’s favor and purpose over the tribes of Israel, much as Jacob had blessed his sons before his death. Gen 49:28 These are the tribes of Israel, twelve in all… that Moses the man of God Moses had served as Israel’s prophet, mediator, lawgiver, and leader throughout the wilderness journey. The title reflects his appointed role in receiving and declaring God’s will. 1Ch 23:14 As for Moses the man of God, his sons were named… pronounced upon the Israelites The blessing addresses the tribes as the covenant people descended from Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, reaffirming their place in God’s promises as they prepared to enter Canaan. 1Ki 8:14 And as the whole assembly of Israel stood there,… before his death. Moses spoke these words at the close of his life, shortly before Israel crossed the Jordan under Joshua’s leadership. His blessing marked the transition into a new generation while affirming God’s continued faithfulness to His people. Deu 31:14 Then the LORD said to Moses, “Behold, the time of your death… He said: Moses now blesses Israel’s tribes before his death, closing his leadership and preparing the nation for Joshua’s succession. Gen 49:1 Then Jacob called for his sons and said,… “The LORD came from Sinai God first revealed His covenant authority at Sinai, where He gave Israel His law and established them as His people. Exo 19:18 Mount Sinai was completely enveloped in smoke,… and dawned upon us from Seir; His appearing from the south portrays the Lord advancing with His people and directing their journey from the wilderness toward the land He promised them. Jdg 5:4 O LORD, when You went out from Seir, when You marched… He shone forth from Mount Paran God’s glory accompanied Israel through the desert, providing protection, guidance, and deliverance throughout their wanderings. Hab 3:3-4 God came from Teman, and the Holy One from Mount Paran.… and came with myriads of holy ones, The Lord appeared attended by the heavenly host, displaying His supreme authority over all creation. Psa 68:17 The chariots of God are tens of thousands… with flaming fire at His right hand. Fire marked His holy and powerful presence, revealing both His judgment against sin and His strength to defend His people. Exo 24:16-17 and the glory of the LORD settled on Mount Sinai.… Surely You love the people; God’s covenant love rests on Israel, the nation He chose through Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Though Israel often rebelled, the Lord remained faithful to His promises and purposes for them. Deu 7:7-8 The LORD did not set His affection on you and choose you… all the holy ones are in Your hand, Israel was set apart as God’s holy people and remained under His sovereign care. His hand conveys both protection and authority over those who belong to Him. Isa 49:16 Behold, I have inscribed you on the palms of My hands;… and they sit down at Your feet; The people are pictured as gathered before the Lord in humility and submission, ready to hear His instruction through Moses. Luk 10:39 She had a sister named Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet… each receives Your words— As Israel prepared to enter the Promised Land, God’s words gave them the covenant commands by which they were to live as His people. Deu 31:9 So Moses wrote down this law and gave it to the priests,… the possession of the assembly of Jacob. The law was Israel’s sacred inheritance as the descendants of Jacob and the people chosen by God. It marked them as a distinct nation and entrusted them with the responsibility to live according to God’s revealed will. Deu 32:9 But the LORD’s portion is His people, Jacob… So the LORD became King in Jeshurun Israel was constituted as a covenant nation under God’s direct rule. Though Moses led the people and later kings governed them, the LORD remained Israel’s true King and lawgiver. Jeshurun, a poetic name for Israel meaning “upright one,” recalls the nation’s calling to live uprightly before Him. 1Sa 12:12 But when you saw that Nahash king of the Ammonites… when the leaders of the people gathered, The heads of the tribes assembled with Moses to receive instruction and act on behalf of the nation. Their gathering reflected Israel’s ordered life under the covenant given at Sinai. Jos 24:1 Then Joshua assembled all the tribes of Israel at Shechem.… when the tribes of Israel came together. The tribes stood as one people before their King. As Jacob’s firstborn, Reuben held an honored position until his sin brought disgrace upon him. Settled east of the Jordan in territory exposed to conflict, the tribe needed God’s preserving care. Gen 49:3-4 Reuben, you are my firstborn, my might, excelling in honor,… nor his men be few.” The blessing seeks lasting numbers and strength for Reuben’s descendants. A tribe’s survival depended on enough men to defend its land, maintain its households, and retain its place among the tribes of Israel. Num 1:20-21 From the sons of Reuben, the firstborn of Israel,… And concerning Judah he said: Judah receives a distinct blessing as the tribe appointed for leadership among Israel. From Judah came David’s royal line, and the tribe later became the center of the southern kingdom. Gen 49:8-10 Judah, your brothers shall praise you.… “O LORD, hear the cry of Judah Judah would face war, political danger, and threats from surrounding peoples. Moses asks the Lord to hear Judah when it calls for help, recognizing that the tribe’s security depended on God’s intervention. Psa 61:1 For the choirmaster. With stringed instruments. Of David.… and bring him to his people. The request anticipates Judah’s continued place among the tribes of Israel and expresses a desire for its preservation and unity with the nation. Isa 11:12 He will raise a banner for the nations and gather… With his own hands he defends his cause, Judah would possess strength to fight for itself and exercise leadership in battle. Its history included notable military leaders and kings, especially David and his descendants. 1Ch 14:10-11 So David inquired of God, “Should I go up…”… but may You be a help against his foes.” Judah’s own strength would not be enough against its enemies. The blessing places Judah’s victories under God’s protection and aid. 2Ch 14:11 Then Asa cried out to the LORD his God: “O LORD,… Concerning Levi he said: Moses now turns to Levi, the tribe appointed for priestly and tabernacle service. Unlike the other tribes, Levi received no territorial inheritance because the Lord was its inheritance and service before Him was its calling. Deu 10:8-9 At that time the LORD set apart the tribe of Levi… “Give Your Thummim to Levi The Urim and Thummim belonged to the high priest and were used to seek God’s judgment in matters affecting Israel. Their presence with Levi marked the tribe’s responsibility to represent the nation before the Lord and to teach His judgments. Exo 28:30 And place the Urim and Thummim in the breastpiece… and Your Urim to Your godly one, The priesthood, especially through Aaron and his descendants, was entrusted with these sacred instruments. Levi’s consecrated service required faithfulness to God above family, tribe, or personal interest. Num 27:21 He shall stand before Eleazar the priest… whom You tested at Massah At Massah, meaning “testing,” Israel tested the Lord by demanding water in unbelief. The wilderness trials exposed both the rebellion of the people and the necessity of faithful leadership among those appointed to serve God. Exo 17:7 He named the place Massah and Meribah because the Israelites… and contested at the waters of Meribah. At Meribah, meaning “quarreling,” Israel again quarreled over water, bringing severe pressure upon Moses and Aaron. The event showed the cost of Israel’s rebellion and the seriousness of representing God rightly before the people. Num 20:13 These were the waters of Meribah, where the Israelites… He said of his father and mother, ‘I do not consider them.’ During Israel’s worship of the golden calf, the Levites stood with Moses for the Lord’s honor, refusing to place family loyalty above obedience to God. Mat 10:37 Anyone who loves his father or mother more than Me;… He disregarded his brothers and did not know his own sons, Their consecration required impartiality when sin had brought judgment upon the camp. Natural relationships could not outweigh their duty to uphold God’s command. Exo 32:27-29 He told them, “This is what the LORD, the God of Israel,… for he kept Your word and maintained Your covenant. By remaining faithful in this crisis, the Levites were set apart for service connected with the sanctuary, the priesthood, and the instruction of Israel in God’s law. Mal 2:4-6 Then you will know that I have sent you this commandment… He will teach Your ordinances to Jacob Levi was appointed to instruct Israel in God’s commands and to preserve faithful worship throughout the tribes. Their teaching helped the nation understand its covenant obligations and live under the law God had given. Lev 10:11 so that you may teach the Israelites… and Your law to Israel; God’s law shaped Israel’s worship, justice, family life, and national identity. The Levites served as guardians and teachers of that law, calling the people to obedience and helping prevent the corruption that came through idolatry and disobedience. Neh 8:7-8 The Levites instructed the people in the Law… he will set incense before You The priests of Levi offered incense before the Lord in the sanctuary as part of Israel’s daily worship. Its rising smoke accompanied prayer and represented the people’s approach to God through the means He had appointed. Exo 30:7-8 And Aaron is to burn fragrant incense on it… and whole burnt offerings on Your altar. The whole burnt offering was wholly consumed upon the altar, expressing complete consecration to God and providing atonement according to His instruction. Through these sacrifices, the Levites carried out the worship God required until the final sacrifice for sin was fulfilled in Christ. Exo 29:38-42 This is what you are to offer regularly on the altar… Bless his substance, O LORD, Moses asks God to provide for Levi’s needs. Unlike the other tribes, the Levites received no large territorial inheritance, being supported through Israel’s tithes and offerings as they served at the tabernacle. Job 1:10 Have You not placed a hedge on every side… and accept the work of his hands. Their work included guarding the sanctuary, offering sacrifices through the priests, teaching God’s law, and directing Israel’s worship. Moses asks that their service be received by God and accomplish its appointed purpose. 2Co 8:12 For if the eagerness is there, the gift is acceptable… Smash the loins of those who rise against him, Levi’s sacred duties had drawn opposition, notably in Korah’s rebellion against Moses and Aaron. Moses calls on God to break the strength of anyone who resists the priesthood and the order God established. Psa 18:38 I crushed them so they could not rise; they have fallen… and of his foes so they can rise no more.” The request is for decisive judgment against persistent enemies, so that Levi may carry out its service and Israel’s worship may not be undermined. Psa 36:12 There the evildoers lie fallen, thrown down… Concerning Benjamin he said: Benjamin, Jacob and Rachel’s youngest son, received a blessing marked by unusual closeness to the LORD. His tribe later occupied territory near Jerusalem and played an important role in Israel’s history, producing judges, warriors, and Israel’s first king, Saul. Gen 35:18 And with her last breath—for she was dying—… “May the beloved of the LORD rest secure in Him; Benjamin is described as dearly loved by the LORD and granted security in His care. The blessing points to God’s favor resting upon the tribe amid the dangers and conflicts Israel would face in the land. Psa 127:2 In vain you rise early and stay up late,… God shields him all day long, The LORD’s protection over Benjamin was continual rather than occasional. Though Benjamin became known for its skilled fighters, its safety ultimately depended upon God’s defense. Psa 121:5-6 The LORD is your keeper; the LORD is the shade… and upon His shoulders he rests.” Benjamin’s inheritance lay alongside Judah’s, where Jerusalem and the temple would later stand. The image of resting upon God’s shoulders portrays the tribe as upheld, protected, and carried by the LORD. Luk 15:5 And when he finds it, he joyfully puts it on his shoulders, Concerning Joseph he said: Joseph’s inheritance was carried forward through Ephraim and Manasseh, the sons Jacob adopted as tribal heads. Moses’ blessing recognizes their prominent place among Israel’s tribes. Gen 49:22-26 Joseph is a fruitful vine—a fruitful vine by a spring,… “May his land be blessed by the LORD Ephraim and Manasseh received broad and productive territories in the central and northern regions of Canaan. Blessing from above and below describes the fullness of God’s provision for His people. Job 38:16 Have you journeyed to the vents of the sea… with the bountiful harvest from the sun Moses invokes God’s blessing on Joseph’s land, where sunlight provides the warmth and light needed for grain, vines, and fruit trees to mature. In a land dependent on agriculture, a productive harvest demonstrated the Lord’s care and the ordered provision built into creation. Psa 67:6 The earth has yielded its harvest; God, our God, blesses us. and the abundant yield of the seasons, The yearly cycle of rain, planting, growth, and harvest sustained Israel’s households, livestock, and commerce. Moses describes Joseph’s inheritance as marked by dependable fertility throughout the seasons, a material blessing granted by God rather than merely the result of human labor. Act 14:17 Yet He has not left Himself without testimony… with the best of the ancient mountains Joseph’s inheritance would include the rich produce and natural strength of the highlands, long established by God’s design. The mountains picture lasting abundance, security, and the fruitful land granted to Israel. Hab 3:6 He stood and measured the earth; He looked… and the bounty of the everlasting hills, The hills would yield fertile pasture, crops, and other provisions for Joseph’s descendants. Their enduring presence underscores the permanence of God’s promised blessing upon the land and the tribe. Gen 49:26 The blessings of your father have surpassed the blessings… with the choice gifts of the land and everything in it, Moses asks that Joseph’s tribes receive the rich produce of the land—fertile fields, abundant harvests, livestock, and all the provisions needed for prosperity. Ephraim and Manasseh would inherit productive regions in central and northern Canaan, reflecting God’s faithfulness to provide for Israel in the land He promised. Gen 27:28 May God give to you the dew of heaven… and with the favor of Him who dwelt in the burning bush. The God who appeared to Moses at Horeb and commissioned him to deliver Israel is the source of Joseph’s blessing. His presence in the bush recalls His holiness, power, and covenant commitment to bring His people out of Egypt and into their inheritance. Exo 3:2-6 There the angel of the LORD appeared to him…… May these rest on the head of Joseph The blessing is placed upon Joseph as the father of Ephraim and Manasseh. Though he suffered rejection and slavery, God raised him to authority in Egypt and used him to preserve Jacob’s family during famine. His exaltation and provision for his brothers marked him as a recipient of special honor. Gen 49:26 The blessings of your father have surpassed the blessings… and crown the brow of the prince of his brothers. Joseph had been set apart among his brothers and given a place of leadership. His descendants received a double tribal inheritance through Ephraim and Manasseh, and their tribes later held significant influence in Israel. Gen 37:8 “Do you intend to reign over us?” his brothers asked.… His majesty is like a firstborn bull, Joseph’s house is pictured with strength, honor, and fruitfulness. Though Ephraim and Manasseh descended from Joseph, they received a prominent place among Israel and carried the strength associated with the firstborn. Gen 49:3-4 Reuben, you are my firstborn, my might, excelling in honor,… and his horns are like those of a wild ox. The two horns portray Ephraim and Manasseh acting together with formidable power. Their strength would enable them to withstand enemies and secure their inheritance. Num 23:22 God brought them out of Egypt with strength like a wild ox. With them he will gore the nations, even to the ends of the earth. Joseph’s tribes would press back opposing peoples and take part in Israel’s victories. Their influence extended widely, especially as Ephraim became a leading tribe in the northern part of the land. Psa 2:8-9 Ask Me, and I will make the nations Your inheritance,… Such are the myriads of Ephraim, Ephraim would become the larger and more influential branch of Joseph’s family, eventually giving its name to much of the Northern Kingdom. Gen 48:19-20 But his father refused. “I know, my son, I know!”… and such are the thousands of Manasseh.” Manasseh also became numerous and powerful, occupying extensive territory on both sides of the Jordan, though its numbers and prominence remained below Ephraim’s. Num 26:28-34 The descendants of Joseph included the clans of… Concerning Zebulun he said: Moses turned to Zebulun in his final blessing over Israel. Descended from Jacob’s tenth son, Zebulun received territory in the north, positioned near routes that connected inland Israel with coastal commerce. Gen 30:19-20 Again Leah conceived and bore a sixth son to Jacob.… “Rejoice, Zebulun, in your journeys, Zebulun’s location supported travel, trade, and engagement with surrounding regions. Their work beyond their borders was to be received as a blessing from the Lord. Gen 49:13 Zebulun shall dwell by the seashore and become a harbor… and Issachar, in your tents. Issachar’s inheritance and calling were more closely tied to settled life, fields, and household stability. Together, Zebulun and Issachar illustrate the varied responsibilities of Israel’s tribes, each serving the nation according to the place and work God assigned. Gen 49:14-15 Issachar is a strong donkey, lying down between sheepfolds… They will call the peoples to a mountain; Zebulun and Issachar would draw surrounding peoples to Israel’s worship, recognizing the Lord as the source of their prosperity. Their offerings would be acceptable because they were brought in obedience to God’s covenant. Material blessing was to lead them to honor the Lord rather than trust in their own strength. Psa 4:5 Offer the sacrifices of the righteous and trust in the LORD. For they will feast on the abundance of the seas Zebulun’s territory and trade connections brought wealth through the Mediterranean and the coastal routes. The tribe would benefit from commerce, fishing, and goods arriving from distant lands. Isa 60:5 Then you will look and be radiant, and your heart will… and the hidden treasures of the sand.” The coastal region provided valuable resources, including trade goods, marine products, and other riches brought by the sea. God’s blessing upon these tribes extended to resources not readily seen or obtained by human effort. Isa 45:3 I will give you the treasures of darkness… Concerning Gad he said: Moses pronounced this blessing over Gad, the tribe descended from Jacob’s son. Gad received land east of the Jordan, an area suited for livestock and exposed to threats from neighboring peoples. Gen 49:19 Gad will be attacked by raiders, but he… “Blessed is he who enlarges the domain of Gad! Gad’s territory was to be strengthened and enlarged under God’s favor. Its warriors were known for courage and skill in battle. Gen 49:9 Judah is a young lion—my son, you return from the prey.… and tears off an arm or a head. The picture describes decisive victory over enemies. Gad would not merely resist attack but would overcome those who threatened its inheritance. 1Sa 17:51 David ran and stood over him. He grabbed the Philistine’s sword… He chose the best land for himself, Gad settled in the fertile pasturelands east of the Jordan, well suited for the tribe’s large herds. Though this territory lay outside the main land of Canaan, Gad received it after committing to help Israel conquer the land west of the Jordan. Num 32:1-5 Now the Reubenites and Gadites, who had very large herds… because a ruler’s portion was reserved for him there. Gen 49:9 Judah is a young lion—my son, you return from the prey.… leaping out of Bashan.” Bashan lay east of the Jordan and was known for its rich pastureland and powerful livestock. The image suggests swift, unexpected action from the north, fitting Dan’s later migration from its original coastal inheritance to territory near Israel’s northern border. Psa 22:12-13 Many bulls surround me; strong bulls of Bashan encircle me.… Concerning Naphtali he said: Moses pronounced this blessing over Naphtali, one of Israel’s twelve tribes, descended from Jacob’s sixth son by Bilhah. Like Jacob’s earlier blessings, Moses’ words looked ahead to the tribe’s place and inheritance in the land. Gen 49:21 Naphtali is a doe set free that bears beautiful fawns. “Naphtali is abounding with favor, Naphtali received a desirable portion in northern Israel, a fertile region marked by strength and opportunity. Men from the tribe served courageously in Israel’s conflicts, including the days of Barak and Deborah. Psa 84:11 For the LORD God is a sun and a shield;… full of the blessing of the LORD; The tribe’s prosperity and secure inheritance were gifts from the LORD. Its territory included productive land around the Sea of Galilee and became part of the region where Jesus later began His public ministry. Pro 10:22 The blessing of the LORD enriches, and He… he shall take possession of the sea and the south.” Naphtali’s inheritance extended along the western and northern shores of the Sea of Galilee. The reference to the south likely describes the southern reaches of its allotted territory or its access to the lake and surrounding lands. Jos 19:32-39 The sixth lot came out for the clans of the tribe… And concerning Asher he said: Asher, Jacob’s eighth son by Zilpah, received territory along the fertile northern coast of Canaan. Moses’ final blessing anticipates the tribe’s distinctive inheritance and its place among Israel. Gen 30:13 Leah said, “How happy I am! For the women call me happy.”… “May Asher be the most blessed of sons; Asher’s land included productive fields and olive groves, supplying the tribe with agricultural wealth. Its inheritance reflected God’s provision for Israel in the land. Gen 49:20 Asher’s food will be rich; he shall provide royal delicacies… may he be the most favored among his brothers The blessing includes acceptance and goodwill within the nation. Asher would enjoy honor among the tribes as well as the security and abundance associated with a fruitful inheritance. 1Sa 16:11-13 And Samuel asked him, “Are these all the sons”… and dip his foot in oil. The image portrays extraordinary plenty. Asher’s territory was especially suited for olive cultivation, and its oil represented both material prosperity and the rich blessing God granted the tribe. Deu 8:8 a land of wheat, barley, vines, fig trees, and pomegranates;… May the bolts of your gate be iron and bronze, Asher’s territory would be secure and well defended. Gates controlled access to a city or settlement, and strong bars of iron and bronze pictured protection against invasion and instability. The blessing points to God’s preserving care over Asher’s land, homes, and people. Psa 147:13 For He strengthens the bars of your gates… and may your strength match your days.” Asher would receive strength sufficient for each season and circumstance. God’s provision would not fail as needs arose, whether in peace, labor, danger, or old age. The tribe’s security rested not merely in fortified gates, but in the Lord who sustained them day by day. Jos 14:11 still as strong today as I was the day Moses sent me out.… “There is none like the God of Jeshurun, Jeshurun, meaning “upright one,” Israel in its covenant calling, is sustained by the one true God, unlike the false gods worshiped by surrounding nations. He alone is sovereign, faithful, and able to save His people. 2Sa 7:22 How great You are, O Lord GOD! For there is none like You… who rides the heavens to your aid, God is pictured as the divine warrior who rules above all creation and comes swiftly to defend Israel. His help is not limited by earthly strength, armies, or geography. Psa 68:33 to Him who rides upon the highest heavens of old;… and the clouds in His majesty. The clouds reflect His glorious and awe-inspiring presence. The God who led Israel through the wilderness remains exalted over heaven and earth while personally acting for His people. Psa 104:3 laying the beams of His chambers in the waters above… The eternal God is your dwelling place, Moses presents God as Israel’s permanent refuge, the One who existed before the nation and who will remain when every human support fails. As Israel prepared to enter Canaan without Moses, their security rested not in a leader, land, or army, but in the Lord Himself. Psa 90:1 A prayer of Moses the man of God. Lord, You have been… and underneath are the everlasting arms. God’s sustaining power would uphold Israel through the dangers ahead. His protection was not temporary or limited by Israel’s circumstances; He bore His people and preserved them according to His covenant. Isa 40:11 He tends His flock like a shepherd; He gathers the lambs… He drives out the enemy before you, Israel’s coming victories in Canaan would ultimately be the Lord’s work. He would go before them against the Canaanite nations, removing those whose persistent idolatry and wickedness had brought them under judgment. Exo 23:28 I will send the hornet before you to drive the Hivites… giving the command, ‘Destroy him!’ God commanded Israel to carry out His judgment fully rather than make peace with the nations of Canaan or adopt their worship. Their obedience was necessary to preserve Israel from the idolatry that would otherwise corrupt the land and draw the people away from the Lord. Deu 20:16-17 However, in the cities of the nations that the LORD your God… So Israel dwells securely; Moses looks ahead to Israel’s settled life in the land God promised to their fathers. Their safety depends on the Lord’s faithful protection, not merely on military strength or favorable circumstances. Psa 68:26 Bless God in the great congregation; bless the LORD… in a land of grain and new wine, The promised land would supply the ordinary necessities and pleasures of life in abundance. Its fertile fields would testify to God’s covenant faithfulness as Israel obeyed Him and remained in the land. Deu 11:14 then I will provide rain for your land in season,… where even the heavens drip with dew. Dew sustained crops during the dry seasons and was a visible sign of God’s continuing provision. Israel’s prosperity would rest on His care over the land from heaven. Gen 27:28 May God give to you the dew of heaven… Blessed are you, O Israel! Israel stands uniquely favored as the covenant people God chose and preserved. Their blessedness rests not merely in national prosperity but in belonging to the LORD, who bound Himself to them through His promises to Abraham and fulfilled His word throughout their history. Psa 144:15 Blessed are the people of whom this is so;… Who is like you, a people saved by the LORD? No other nation had been redeemed in the same way. The LORD brought Israel out of Egyptian slavery, sustained them in the wilderness, and gave them the land He promised. Their identity and security came from His saving acts, not from their size or strength. 2Sa 7:23 And who is like Your people Israel—the one nation… He is the shield that protects you, The LORD defended Israel against enemies and preserved them despite repeated dangers, rebellion, and weakness. Their protection depended on His presence and faithfulness rather than military advantage. Gen 15:1 After these events, the word of the LORD came to Abram… the sword in which you boast. Israel’s victories were won by the LORD’s power. He fought for them in the conquest of Canaan and gave them success when they obeyed Him. Their confidence was to rest in the God who acted on their behalf. Jer 9:23 This is what the LORD says: “Let not the wise man… Your enemies will cower before you, The nations opposing Israel would be humbled because the LORD had determined to give His people victory. Their fear reflected recognition that Israel’s God was greater than the gods of the land. Exo 23:27 I will send My terror ahead of you and throw into confusion… and you shall trample their high places.” Israel would overthrow the fortified sites and pagan worship centers of the Canaanites. The command involved both military conquest and the removal of idolatry from the land God was giving them.
