Judges 8

Gideon Defeats Zebah and Zalmunna

Then the men of Ephraim said to Gideon,

Ephraim was a strong and influential tribe in central Israel, accustomed to prominence among the tribes. Though Gideon had later called them to secure the Jordan crossings and pursue the fleeing Midianites, they resented not being included from the beginning.

Jos 17:14-18 Then the sons of Joseph said to Joshua,…
Jos 22:12-16 And when they heard this, the whole congregation of Israel…
2Sa 19:41-43 Soon all the men of Israel came to the king and asked,…

“Why have you done this to us?

Their complaint arose from wounded pride as much as from concern for Israel’s defense. The victory over Midian brought honor, and Ephraim believed its standing entitled it to a greater role.

Gen 26:10 “What is this you have done to us?” asked Abimelech.…
Gen 20:9 Then Abimelech called Abraham and asked, …
Gen 31:26 Then Laban said to Jacob, “What have you done?…

Why did you fail to call us when you went to fight against Midian?”

Midian’s oppression had affected the nation, so Ephraim viewed the battle as a matter requiring broader tribal participation. Their words reveal the fragile unity of Israel during the time of the judges, when no central ruler governed the tribes.

And they contended with him violently.

Ephraim confronted Gideon with intense anger, turning a shared victory into a serious dispute. Their response threatened division at a moment when Israel needed unity after deliverance from Midian.

But Gideon answered them,

Gideon responded to the Ephraimites after they protested that they had not been summoned sooner to join the fight against Midian. Rather than defend his own leadership or intensify the dispute, he answered in a way that honored their role in the victory.

Are not the gleanings of Ephraim

Gideon compared Ephraim’s accomplishments to the valuable fruit left after a harvest. What they had done after joining the battle was far more important than their complaint suggested.

God has delivered Oreb and Zeeb, the two princes of Midian, into your hand.

Ephraim had captured and killed two leading Midianite commanders as they fled across the Jordan. Gideon recognized that their victory over Oreb and Zeeb was granted by God and publicly honored Ephraim’s important part in defeating Midian.

Psa 83:11 Make their nobles like Oreb and Zeeb, and all their princes……
Isa 10:26 And the LORD of Hosts will brandish a whip against them,…

What was I able to do compared to you?”

Gideon answered Ephraim’s complaint by placing their achievement above his own. Rather than defending himself for not summoning them earlier, he emphasized their successful pursuit of the enemy and avoided a conflict among Israel’s tribes.

Php 2:3 Do nothing out of selfish ambition or empty pride,…
Rom 12:10 Be devoted to one another in brotherly love.…

When he had said this, their anger against him subsided.

Gideon’s humble response removed the offense Ephraim had taken. At a critical moment in the campaign, his restraint preserved unity among the Israelites and prevented internal division from weakening their victory.

Then Gideon and his three hundred men

Gideon, also called Jerubbaal, led the force God had reduced from 32,000 men to 300 so that Israel’s deliverance would clearly be attributed to the Lord rather than military strength. Though small in number, they had already routed the Midianite camp and were now pursuing the fleeing enemy leaders.

The pursuit carried them eastward across the Jordan River, beyond the territory where the battle had begun. The river marked a major boundary of the land and represented the distance Gideon’s men were willing to travel to complete their mission.

The men were weakened by the night battle and the demanding pursuit, yet they continued after the Midianite kings. Their endurance reflects Gideon’s resolve to secure a complete victory rather than leave Israel vulnerable to another attack.

“Very well,” Gideon replied,

Gideon answered the leaders of Succoth after they refused provisions for his exhausted men during their pursuit of the Midianite army. Their unwillingness to support Israel’s deliverance exposed their lack of faith and loyalty.

I will tear your flesh with the thorns and briers of the wilderness!”

Gideon announced severe punishment for Succoth’s leaders because they had withheld aid while Israel’s army pursued the enemy. The thorns and briers of the region would become instruments of judgment against those who had refused to stand with God’s people.

From there he went up to Penuel

Penuel lay east of the Jordan and was remembered as the place where Jacob met God and received a new name. Gideon’s ascent continued his pursuit of the Midianite kings after leaving Succoth, bringing his exhausted army to another Israelite town.

Gen 32:30-31 So Jacob named the place Peniel, saying…
Hos 12:4 Yes, he struggled with the angel and prevailed;…

and asked the same from them,

He requested provisions for his men, who were weary but still pressing forward against Zebah and Zalmunna. Their need was immediate, and Gideon expected fellow Israelites to support the army defending them from Midianite oppression.

1Sa 25:8 Ask your young men, and they will tell you.…
1Ki 17:10-11 So Elijah got up and went to Zarephath. When he arrived…

but the men of Penuel gave the same response as the men of Succoth.

Like Succoth, Penuel refused to help because the Midianite kings had not yet been captured. Their response revealed fear and unwillingness to stand with Gideon before the victory was complete. Their refusal would later bring judgment upon the city.

1Sa 25:10-11 But Nabal asked them, “Who is David? Who is this son of Jesse?…
Job 22:7 You gave no water to the weary and withheld food…
Pro 3:27-28 Do not withhold good from the deserving,…

So Gideon told the men of Penuel,

Gideon confronted the leaders of Penuel, a fortified town east of the Jordan. Though they were Israelites, they had refused to provide food for his exhausted army while he pursued the Midianite kings.

Gen 28:20-21 Then Jacob made a vow, saying, “If God will be with me…

Now Zebah and Zalmunna were in Karkor

The two Midianite kings had withdrawn east of the Jordan, seeking safety in Karkor after Gideon’s initial victory. Their retreat shows that the enemy’s leadership remained determined to preserve what was left of its strength and escape judgment.

As Gideon pursued Zebah and Zalmunna, he obtained information from a resident of Succoth, the town that had refused provisions to his weary men. Located east of the Jordan in the territory of Gad, Succoth had declined to support Gideon until his victory seemed certain. Gideon’s questioning of the young man enabled him to identify those responsible for the town’s decision.

Then he took the elders of the city,

Gideon had asked Succoth for provisions while pursuing Zebah and Zalmunna, but its leaders refused because the Midianite kings had not yet been captured. Their refusal denied support to Israel’s deliverer during a critical campaign. As the city’s governing representatives, the elders bore responsibility for Succoth’s response.

He also pulled down the tower of Penuel

Penuel’s tower was likely the city’s chief defensive structure and a symbol of its security. Gideon carried out the warning he had given when its leaders refused aid to his exhausted army during the pursuit of Midian.

Next, Gideon asked Zebah and Zalmunna,

Gideon confronted the captured Midianite kings after pursuing them beyond the Jordan. Having delivered Israel from Midian’s oppression, he now sought justice for murders committed during their invasion.

1Sa 17:55 As Saul had watched David going out to confront…

“What kind of men did you kill at Tabor?”

Gideon’s question revealed that the victims were connected to him. The killing at Tabor had been a deliberate act against Israelites of standing, likely members of Gideon’s own family.

Hos 5:1 Hear this, O priests! Take heed, O house of Israel!…
Jos 19:22 The border reached Tabor, Shahazumah, and Beth-shemesh…

“Men like you,” they answered,

Zebah and Zalmunna recognized in Gideon the same appearance and bearing they had seen in the men they killed. Their answer confirmed both their guilt and the family connection.

1Sa 10:23-24 So they ran and brought Saul, and when he stood…
1Sa 9:2 And he had a son named Saul, choice and handsome,…

“each one resembling the son of a king.”

The slain men carried themselves with the dignity of royal sons, indicating their prominence and honor. Their murder gave Gideon personal grounds to execute the Midianite kings.

2Sa 14:25-26 Now there was not a man in all Israel as handsome…
Psa 45:2 You are the most handsome of men; grace has anointed…

“They were my brothers,”

Gideon reveals that Zebah and Zalmunna had killed members of his own family, likely during their earlier raids into Israel. Their crime was not merely military violence but a personal loss that Gideon had carried into the final confrontation.

Jdg 9:5 He went to his father’s house in Ophrah, and on one stone…
2Sa 19:12 You are my brothers, my own flesh and blood.…
Gen 37:4 When Joseph’s brothers saw that their father loved him…

Gideon replied,

Gideon speaks as Israel’s deliverer and as a brother seeking justice for those who had been murdered. His victory over Midian now brings him face to face with the men responsible.

Gen 42:22 And Reuben responded, “Didn’t I tell you not to sin…”…
2Sa 1:14-16 So David asked him, “Why were you not afraid”…

“the sons of my mother!

Gideon stresses that the slain men were his full brothers, joined to him by the same mother. Their deaths made the matter especially grievous and gave added weight to his judgment against the Midianite kings.

Psa 50:20 You sit and malign your brother; you slander your own…
Sng 1:6 Do not stare because I am dark, for the sun…

As surely as the LORD lives,

Gideon calls upon the living God as witness to the truth and seriousness of his words. His oath places his decision before the LORD, whose justice Israel had sought in its deliverance from Midian.

Gideon declares that their execution is the consequence of their murder. Having shed innocent blood, they now face judgment for what they had done.

So he said to Jether, his firstborn, “Get up and kill them.”

After defeating Midian, Gideon confronted the captured kings Zebah and Zalmunna, who had killed his brothers. He commanded Jether to execute them, likely intending to honor his slain family members and to establish his eldest son publicly as a man capable of bearing responsibility in Israel.

1Sa 22:17 Then the king ordered the guards at his side…
2Sa 1:15-16 Then David summoned one of the young men and said,…
1Sa 15:33 But Samuel declared: “As your sword has made women…

But the young man did not draw his sword;

Jether was unable to carry out the execution. Though Gideon had given him an opportunity to act with courage and assume a warrior’s role, the task was beyond his experience and strength.

1Sa 24:6 So he said to his men, “The LORD forbid…
1Sa 26:9-11 But David said to Abishai, “Do not destroy him…
Exo 1:17 The midwives, however, feared God and did not do…

he was fearful because he was still a youth.

Jether’s fear reflected both his age and the seriousness of killing defeated kings. Gideon did not force him, but completed the judgment himself in the following verses.

1Sa 17:33 But Saul replied, “You cannot go out against…
Jer 1:6 “Ah, Lord GOD,” I said, “I surely do not know how to speak,…
1Ki 3:7 And now, O LORD my God, You have made Your servant king…

Then Zebah and Zalmunna said,

The Midianite kings had led the forces that oppressed Israel through raids and violence. Defeated and captured, they faced judgment for their part in Midian’s aggression.

Psa 83:11 Make their nobles like Oreb and Zeeb, and all their princes……
Num 31:7-8 Then they waged war against Midian, as the LORD had…

“Get up and kill us yourself,

They appealed to the honor expected of a victorious warrior, preferring to die by Gideon’s hand rather than by a younger subordinate.

1Sa 31:4 Then Saul said to his armor-bearer, “Draw your sword…
2Sa 1:9-10 Then he begged me, ‘Stand over me and kill me…

for as the man is, so is his strength.”

Their words recognized Gideon as the leader whose courage and authority had brought about their defeat.

Pro 24:5 A wise man is strong, and a man of knowledge…
Psa 33:16-17 No king is saved by his vast army; no warrior…

So Gideon got up and killed Zebah and Zalmunna,

Gideon carried out the judgment he had been appointed to execute, bringing his campaign against the Midianite rulers to its conclusion.

Jos 10:24-26 When they had brought the kings to Joshua, he summoned…
1Sa 15:33 But Samuel declared: “As your sword has made women…

and he took the crescent ornaments from the necks of their camels.

These ornaments marked the wealth and royal standing of the Midianite kings. Their removal displayed the completeness of Gideon’s victory over Midian and its rulers.

Isa 60:6-7 Caravans of camels will cover your land,…

Gideon’s Ephod

Then the Israelites said to Gideon,

After Midian’s defeat, the Israelites sought to secure the peace Gideon had helped bring. Their appeal reveals a desire for stable national leadership beyond the temporary deliverance provided by a judge.

1Sa 8:4-5 So all the elders of Israel gathered together…
Jdg 9:2 Please ask all the leaders of Shechem, ‘Is it better…

“Rule over us—

They asked Gideon to assume authority like that of a king, replacing the pattern of judges raised up by God for particular crises.

1Sa 12:12 But when you saw that Nahash king of the Ammonites…
1Sa 8:19-20 Nevertheless, the people refused to listen to Samuel…

you and your son and grandson—

Their request included hereditary rule, showing that they wanted Gideon’s family to establish a lasting dynasty. Israel had not been commanded to pass leadership from father to son in this way.

2Sa 7:12-13 And when your days are fulfilled and you rest…
2Ki 10:30 Nevertheless, the LORD said to Jehu, “Because you have done…

for you have saved us from the hand of Midian.”

Gideon had led the battle, but the victory belonged to the Lord, who had deliberately reduced Gideon’s army so Israel would not claim credit for itself. The people honored Gideon as their deliverer while failing to give proper attention to God’s decisive work.

Jdg 6:14 The LORD turned to him and said, “Go in the strength…
1Sa 12:11 So the LORD sent Jerubbaal, Barak, Jephthah, and Samuel…

But Gideon replied,

After defeating Midian, Gideon faced Israel’s desire to make him their ruler. The request revealed the nation’s longing for the security and status associated with surrounding kingdoms.

Jhn 6:15 Then Jesus, realizing they were about to make Him king…
1Sa 8:5 “Look,” they said, “you are old, and your sons”…
1Sa 12:12 But when you saw that Nahash king of the Ammonites…

“I will not rule over you,

Gideon rejected the crown and refused to replace the LORD as Israel’s king. Deliverance had come through God’s power, not Gideon’s personal strength.

1Sa 8:7 And the LORD said to Samuel, “Listen to the voice…
Jhn 18:36 Jesus answered, “My kingdom is not of this world”…
Mat 20:26-28 It shall not be this way among you. Instead,…

nor will my son.

He also refused to establish a hereditary dynasty. Israel’s leaders were to be raised up by God for specific needs, not secured through family succession.

1Ki 12:16 When all Israel saw that the king had refused to listen…
Deu 17:15 Appoint a king from among your brothers;…
Hos 8:4 They set up kings, but not by Me. They make princes…

The LORD shall rule over you.”

Gideon rightly declared that Israel belonged under God’s direct rule. His words stand in contrast to Abimelech’s later attempt to make himself king, which brought violence and division to Gideon’s family and the nation.

Exo 15:18 The LORD will reign forever and ever!”
Psa 10:16 The LORD is King forever and ever; the nations perish…
Isa 33:22 For the LORD is our Judge, the LORD is our lawgiver,…

Then he added, “Let me make a request of you,

After refusing Israel’s offer to make him and his descendants rulers, Gideon sought a share of the spoils gathered from the defeated Midianites.

Exo 11:2-3 Now announce to the people that men and women alike…
Exo 12:35-36 Furthermore, the Israelites acted on Moses’ word…
Exo 3:21-22 And I will grant this people such favor…

that each of you give me an earring from his plunder.”

Gold earrings were valuable personal possessions and part of the wealth taken after the battle. Gideon’s collection would later be used to make an ephod, which became a source of idolatry and a snare to Israel.

Num 31:50-54 So we have brought to the LORD an offering…
Exo 32:2-4 So Aaron told them, “Take off the gold earrings…
Gen 35:2-4 So Jacob told his household and all who were with him,…

(For the enemies had gold earrings because they were Ishmaelites.)

The Midianite raiders were associated with the Ishmaelites, desert peoples known for trade and nomadic life. Their gold ornaments reflect the wealth carried by the confederation Gideon had defeated.

Gen 37:25-28 And as they sat down to eat a meal, they looked up…
Gen 25:13-18 These are the names of the sons of Ishmael:…
Gen 16:11-12 The angel of the LORD proceeded: “Behold, you have conceived…

“We will give them gladly,” they replied.

Israel willingly honored Gideon for delivering them from Midianite oppression. Their response reflected gratitude and a united recognition of his leadership.

1Ch 29:9 And the people rejoiced at the willing response…
2Co 9:7 Each one should give what he has decided…
Exo 35:21 And everyone whose heart stirred him came…

So they spread out a garment,

A garment was laid out to receive the offerings, providing a simple and orderly means for the people to gather the gold in one place.

Rut 3:15 And he told her, “Bring the shawl you are wearing…
2Ki 9:13 Quickly, each man took his garment and put it under Jehu…
Mat 21:7 They brought the donkey and the colt, and laid…

and each man threw an earring from his plunder onto it.

Each soldier contributed from the spoils taken from the Midianites, whose gold ornaments were well known. The shared offering produced a substantial amount of gold, later used by Gideon to make an ephod that became a source of spiritual corruption for his household and Israel.

Exo 35:22 So all who had willing hearts, both men and women…
Exo 32:2-4 So Aaron told them, “Take off the gold earrings…
Num 31:50 So we have brought to the LORD an offering…

The weight of the gold earrings he had requested was 1,700 shekels,

The gold earrings Gideon requested weighed 1,700 shekels, or nearly 43 pounds, revealing the vast wealth taken from the defeated Midianite forces. The earrings came from enemy warriors, among whom such ornaments were customary.

Exo 32:2-3 So Aaron told them, “Take off the gold earrings…
Num 31:50-54 So we have brought to the LORD an offering…
Exo 35:22 So all who had willing hearts, both men and women…

in addition to the crescent ornaments,

The crescent ornaments were likely symbols of royal or religious status among the Midianites. Their seizure signaled the collapse of Midianite power over Israel.

Isa 3:18 In that day the Lord will take away their finery…
Hos 2:13 I will punish her for the days of the Baals…

the pendants,

Further valuable ornaments were added to the spoils gathered after the battle. The pendants mentioned in Judges 8:26 were likely crescent-shaped ornaments taken from the camels of the Midianite kings.

Ezk 16:11-12 I adorned you with jewelry, and I put bracelets…
Sng 1:10 Your cheeks are beautiful with ornaments,…
Pro 25:12 Like an earring of gold or an ornament of fine gold…

the purple garments of the kings of Midian,

The purple garments taken from Zebah and Zalmunna testified to their defeat and the loss of their royal authority.

Dan 5:7 The king called out for the enchanters, astrologers,…
Jhn 19:2 The soldiers twisted together a crown of thorns,…
Rev 17:4 The woman was dressed in purple and scarlet…

and the chains from the necks of their camels.

Even the camels bore costly adornments, showing the wealth and splendor of the Midianite rulers and the completeness of Israel’s victory.

Pro 1:9 For they are a garland of grace on your head…
Pro 3:22 They will be life to your soul and adornment to your neck.
Isa 60:6 Caravans of camels will cover your land,…

From all this Gideon made an ephod,

Using gold taken from the Midianite spoil, Gideon made an ephod, apparently as a religious object rather than a garment for priestly service. Though Israel had been delivered through him, he established something outside the worship God had appointed.

Jdg 17:5 Now this man Micah had a shrine, and he made an ephod…
Exo 39:2-5 Bezalel made the ephod of finely spun linen…
Exo 28:6-8 They are to make the ephod of finely spun linen…

which he placed in Ophrah, his hometown.

Gideon set it up in Ophrah, making his own town a place of religious attention instead of directing Israel to the Lord’s established place of worship.

Jdg 6:24 So Gideon built an altar to the LORD there…
Jdg 6:11 Then the angel of the LORD came and sat down…
Jdg 9:5 He went to his father’s house in Ophrah, and on one stone…

But soon all Israel prostituted themselves by worshiping it there,

What may have begun as a memorial of victory became an object of idolatry. Israel gave to the ephod the devotion that belonged to the Lord alone.

Jdg 2:17 Israel, however, did not listen to their judges.…
Num 25:1-3 While Israel was staying in Shittim, the men began…
Exo 34:15-16 Do not make a covenant with the inhabitants of the land,…

and it became a snare to Gideon and his household.

Gideon’s act brought spiritual harm to his family and helped lead the nation into unfaithfulness. The deliverer who had torn down Baal’s altar left behind an object that became another occasion for idolatry.

Psa 106:36 They worshiped their idols, which became a snare to them.
Deu 7:16 You must destroy all the peoples the LORD your God…
Jos 23:13 know for sure that the LORD your God will no longer…

Forty Years of Peace

In this way Midian was subdued before the Israelites

Gideon’s victory ended the seven-year oppression Midian had imposed on Israel. Though Israel’s army was small, God brought a decisive defeat that broke Midian’s ability to dominate the land.

Jdg 3:30 So Moab was subdued under the hand of Israel…
Jos 23:9 The LORD has driven out great and powerful nations…
2Sa 8:1 Some time later, David defeated the Philistines…

and did not raise its head again.

Midian was so thoroughly weakened that it no longer threatened Israel during Gideon’s lifetime. The enemy that had driven Israel into hiding was left unable to recover its former strength.

Nam 1:9 Whatever you plot against the LORD, He will bring…
Psa 18:38 I crushed them so they could not rise; they have fallen…
2Sa 22:38 I pursued my enemies and destroyed them;…

So the land had rest for forty years

Israel enjoyed a generation of peace and security after the Midianite invasion ended. The rest came through God’s deliverance and remained during the period of Gideon’s influence.

Jdg 3:11 So the land had rest for forty years, until Othniel…
Jos 11:23 So Joshua took the entire land, as the LORD had spoken…
1Ki 5:4 But now the LORD my God has given me rest…

in the days of Gideon,

Gideon served as God’s instrument of rescue despite his weaknesses and later failures. His leadership brought relief to Israel, though the peace did not produce lasting faithfulness among the people.

Heb 11:32 And what more shall I say? Time will not allow me…
Jdg 6:11 Then the angel of the LORD came and sat down…
1Sa 12:11 So the LORD sent Jerubbaal, Barak, Jephthah, and Samuel…

and he—Jerubbaal son of Joash—

Jerubbaal, also called Gideon, was the son of Joash from the tribe of Manasseh. His name means “Let Baal contend.” He received this name after tearing down his father’s altar to Baal, leaving Baal to contend for himself. Having delivered Israel from Midian, Gideon had completed the task God gave him.

Jdg 6:32 So on that day Gideon was called Jerubbaal, …
Jdg 6:11 Then the angel of the LORD came and sat down…
1Sa 12:11 So the LORD sent Jerubbaal, Barak, Jephthah, and Samuel…

returned home

He did not establish a royal dynasty or retain permanent military authority, but returned to his own household at Ophrah.

Act 21:6 And after we had said our farewells, we went aboard the ship…

and settled down.

Israel enjoyed peace during Gideon’s remaining years, though the nation’s devotion to the LORD would not endure after his death.

2Ki 19:36 So Sennacherib king of Assyria broke camp and withdrew.…
2Sa 7:1 After the king had settled into his palace,…
1Ki 5:4 But now the LORD my God has given me rest…

Gideon had seventy sons of his own,

Gideon’s large household reflected the wealth, influence, and honor he gained after delivering Israel from Midian. Seventy sons also suggests a full and powerful dynasty, yet their number would not preserve peace after his death. The rivalries within Gideon’s family would soon lead to violence and Abimelech’s attempt to establish himself as ruler.

2Ki 10:1-2 Now Ahab had seventy sons in Samaria. So Jehu wrote letters…
2Ch 11:21 Rehoboam loved Maacah daughter of Absalom more…
Jdg 10:4 He had thirty sons who rode on thirty donkeys.…

since he had many wives.

Like other wealthy and prominent men of his time, Gideon took multiple wives, increasing his household and social standing. This arrangement departed from God’s pattern of one man and one woman and created competing family lines. The resulting divisions became evident when Abimelech murdered his brothers in his pursuit of power.

1Ki 11:1-3 King Solomon, however, loved many foreign women…
2Sa 5:13 After he had arrived from Hebron, David took more wives…
Deu 17:17 He must not take many wives for himself…

His concubine,

Gideon had a secondary wife of lower standing than his wives at Ophrah. Her position and Abimelech’s birth would later contribute to division among Gideon’s sons.

2Sa 5:13 After he had arrived from Hebron, David took more wives…
1Ch 3:9 These were all the sons of David, besides…

who dwelt in Shechem,

Shechem was an influential Canaanite city in the central hill country, associated with Israel’s covenant history but still marked by mixed worship and political rivalry. Gideon’s connection to the city gave his son ties beyond his own clan.

Gen 33:18-19 After Jacob had come from Paddan-aram, he arrived safely…
Jdg 9:1 Abimelech son of Jerubbaal went to his mother’s brothers……
Jos 24:1 Then Joshua assembled all the tribes of Israel at Shechem.…

also bore him a son,

Though Abimelech was Gideon’s son, his mother’s residence and status distinguished him from the sons raised in Gideon’s household.

Gen 21:2 So Sarah conceived and bore a son to Abraham in his old age…
2Sa 12:24 Then David comforted his wife Bathsheba, and he went to her…
1Sa 1:20 So in the course of time, Hannah conceived and gave birth…

and he named him Abimelech.

The name means “my father is king.” Gideon had rejected Israel’s offer of hereditary rule, yet the name anticipates Abimelech’s later attempt to establish himself as ruler over Shechem and its surrounding region.

Gen 21:3 And Abraham gave the name Isaac to the son…
Gen 16:15 And Hagar bore Abram a son, and Abram gave the name Ishmael…
Luk 1:63 Zechariah asked for a tablet and wrote, “His name is John.”…

Gideon’s Death

Later, Gideon son of Joash died at a ripe old age

Gideon, also called Jerubbaal, lived long after God used him to deliver Israel from Midianite oppression. Though reluctant at first, he became a faithful instrument of God’s power and led Israel through a decisive period of conflict and peace.

1Ch 29:28 He died at a ripe old age, full of years, riches, and honor,…
Gen 25:8 And at a ripe old age he breathed his last and died,…
Gen 35:29 Then he breathed his last and died, and was gathered…

and was buried in the tomb of his father Joash

His burial in the family tomb honored his place within the household of Joash and preserved the customary connection between a man and his ancestors. Gideon returned in death to the family and community from which God had raised him.

2Sa 2:32 And they took Asahel and buried him in his father’s tomb…
1Ki 2:10 Then David rested with his fathers and was buried…
2Ki 14:20 They carried him back on horses and buried him in Jerusalem…

in Ophrah of the Abiezrites.

Ophrah, in the territory of Manasseh, was Gideon’s home and the setting for the beginning of his public calling, including his destruction of Baal’s altar. The Abiezrites were Gideon’s clan, underscoring that Israel’s deliverer came from an otherwise modest family within the tribe.

Jdg 6:11 Then the angel of the LORD came and sat down…
Jdg 6:24 So Gideon built an altar to the LORD there…
Jos 17:2 So this allotment was for the rest of the descendants…

And as soon as Gideon was dead,

Israel quickly abandoned the stability that followed Gideon’s deliverance from Midian. His death exposed the people’s failure to remain faithful to the Lord apart from strong leadership.

Jdg 2:19 But when the judge died, the Israelites became corrupt…
Jdg 2:10 After that whole generation had also been gathered…
Deu 31:29 For I know that after my death, you will become…

the Israelites turned and prostituted themselves with the Baals,

They broke covenant with God by pursuing the Canaanite fertility gods. Their idolatry was spiritual adultery, replacing devotion to the Lord with the worship and practices of the surrounding nations.

Jdg 2:17 Israel, however, did not listen to their judges.…
Jdg 2:11 And the Israelites did evil in the sight of the LORD…
Jdg 10:6 And again the Israelites did evil in the sight of the LORD.…

and they set up Baal-berith as their god.

At Shechem they embraced Baal-berith, meaning “Lord of the Covenant,” as a rival to the God who had made covenant with Israel. This public choice rejected the Lord’s authority and prepared the way for the violence and corruption that followed in Gideon’s family and in Israel.

Jdg 9:4 So they gave him seventy shekels of silver…
Jdg 9:46 On hearing of this, all the leaders in the tower of Shechem…

The Israelites failed to remember

After Gideon’s death, Israel quickly turned from the God who had rescued them. Their forgetfulness showed itself in renewed idolatry and disregard for the covenant.

Deu 8:11 Be careful not to forget the LORD your God…
Psa 106:13 Yet they soon forgot His works and failed to wait…
Psa 78:11 They forgot what He had done, the wonders He had shown them.

God had repeatedly raised up deliverers and given Israel victory when surrounding nations oppressed them. Gideon’s victory over Midian was among the most recent examples.

Though Israel lived among hostile peoples, God had given them rest. Their return to false gods revealed how quickly they abandoned the One who had preserved them.

Jos 21:44 And the LORD gave them rest on every side,…
1Ki 5:4 But now the LORD my God has given me rest…

They did not show kindness to the house of Jerubbaal

Israel soon forgot the deliverance God had accomplished through Gideon, also called Jerubbaal, meaning “Let Baal contend against him,” and neglected his family. Their treatment of his household exposed the nation’s instability after Gideon’s death and prepared the way for Abimelech’s violence against his brothers.

1Sa 25:21 Now David had just said, “In vain I have protected…
Psa 38:20 Those who repay my good with evil attack me…
Pro 17:13 If anyone returns evil for good, evil will never leave…

(that is, Gideon)

Jerubbaal was the name given to Gideon after he destroyed Baal’s altar in Ophrah. He had led Israel against Midian and served as judge during forty years of peace, yet his family received no lasting honor or protection from the people he had delivered.

Jdg 7:1 Early in the morning Jerubbaal (that is, Gideon)…

Heb 11:32 And what more shall I say? Time will not allow me…

Gideon’s victories freed Israel from Midianite oppression and brought relief to the land. Israel’s failure to remember his service showed how quickly the nation turned from gratitude, loyalty, and faithfulness to God.

1Sa 12:11 So the LORD sent Jerubbaal, Barak, Jephthah, and Samuel…
Jdg 7:22 And when the three hundred rams’ horns sounded,…
