Absalom Killed

Then David reviewed his troops

David personally prepared the forces that had remained loyal to him during Absalom’s rebellion. Though driven from Jerusalem, he acted with the resolve and judgment expected of Israel’s king, organizing his men for the conflict ahead.

2Sa 24:2 So the king said to Joab the commander of his army,…
1Ch 21:2 So David said to Joab and the commanders of the troops…
1Sa 15:4 So Saul summoned the troops and numbered them at Telaim…

and appointed over them commanders of thousands and of hundreds.

The army was arranged under established leaders so that the men could be directed effectively in battle. This order provided clear command over a sizable force and helped David’s followers remain disciplined as they faced Absalom’s larger rebellion.

1Ch 27:1 This is the list of the Israelites—the heads of families…
Num 31:14 But Moses was angry with the officers of the army…
Deu 1:15 So I took the leaders of your tribes, wise and respected…

He sent out the troops,

David prepared his army to meet Absalom’s rebellion, taking up the military responsibilities expected of Israel’s king.

2Sa 10:7 On hearing this, David sent Joab and the entire army…
1Ch 19:8 On hearing this, David sent Joab and the entire army…
Jdg 7:16-18 And he divided the three hundred men into three companies…

a third under Joab,

Joab remained David’s chief commander, experienced in directing large forces and acting decisively in war.

2Sa 8:16 Joab son of Zeruiah was over the army;…
1Ch 18:15 Joab son of Zeruiah was over the army;…
2Sa 20:23 Now Joab was over the whole army of Israel;…

a third under Joab’s brother Abishai son of Zeruiah,

Abishai, David’s nephew and a proven warrior, commanded another division alongside his brother.

2Sa 10:10 And he placed the rest of the troops under the command…
1Ch 19:11 And he placed the rest of the troops under the command…
2Sa 23:18 Abishai, the brother of Joab and son of Zeruiah…

and a third under Ittai the Gittite.

Ittai, a loyal foreigner from Gath, was entrusted with leadership because of his demonstrated devotion to David. The three divisions gave the army an organized command structure for the coming battle.

2Sa 15:19 Then the king said to Ittai the Gittite,…
2Sa 15:21 But Ittai answered the king, “As surely as the LORD lives…
2Sa 15:22 “March on then,” said David to Ittai. So Ittai the Gittite……

And the king said to the troops, “I will surely march out with you as well.”

David intended to stand with his men rather than remain apart from the danger, though his commanders would soon urge him to stay in the city for the army’s sake.

2Sa 11:1 In the spring, at the time when kings march out to war,…
1Sa 8:20 “Then we will be like all the other nations,…
Num 27:17 who will go out and come in before them,…

But the people pleaded, “You must not go out!

David’s men urged him to remain at Mahanaim rather than lead the army against Absalom. They knew the rebellion centered on David and that his death would endanger the kingdom.

2Sa 21:17 But Abishai son of Zeruiah came to his aid,…
1Sa 29:4 But the commanders of the Philistines were angry with Achish…
2Sa 11:1 In the spring, at the time when kings march out to war,…

For if we have to flee, they will not care about us.

Absalom’s forces were not chiefly concerned with ordinary soldiers. Their main objective was to find and kill David.

2Sa 17:2 I will attack him while he is weak and weary;…
1Ki 22:31 Now the king of Aram had ordered his chariot commanders…
2Ch 18:30 Now the king of Aram had ordered his chariot commanders,…

Even if half of us die, they will not care.

Heavy losses among David’s troops would not satisfy Absalom as long as David remained alive. The conflict was both a struggle for the throne and a rebellion by a son against his father.

2Ch 14:11 Then Asa cried out to the LORD his God: “O LORD,…
1Sa 14:6 Jonathan said to the young man bearing his armor, “Come…
Psa 91:7 Though a thousand may fall at your side, and ten thousand…

But you are worth ten thousand of us.

David’s life carried greater importance than that of many soldiers because he was Israel’s rightful king, the Lord’s anointed ruler, and the unifying leader of those loyal to him.

1Sa 18:7 And as the women danced, they sang out: “Saul has slain…
Sng 5:10 My beloved is dazzling and ruddy, outstanding…
Jhn 11:50-52 You do not realize that it is better for you that one man die…

It is better now if you support us from the city.”

From Mahanaim, David could remain protected while directing the battle, receiving reports, and sending help as needed.

2Sa 15:34-36 But you can thwart the counsel of Ahithophel…
2Sa 17:15-16 So Hushai told Zadok and Abiathar, the priests…
2Sa 15:25-26 Then the king said to Zadok, “Return the ark of God…

“I will do whatever seems best to you,” the king replied.

David accepted the counsel of Joab, Abishai, and Ittai that he should remain in the city rather than lead the army personally. His presence was too important to risk in battle, since Absalom’s rebellion threatened the stability of the kingdom and the lives of many Israelites.

2Sa 15:15 The king’s servants replied, “Whatever our lord the king…
2Ki 10:5 So the palace administrator, the overseer of the city…
Jer 26:14 As for me, here I am in your hands; do to me what you think…

So he stood beside the gate,

David took his place where he could oversee the army’s departure and be seen by the men going into battle. The city gate served as a public and military gathering place, fitting for the king as he entrusted the coming conflict to his commanders.

2Sa 15:2 He would get up early and stand beside the road…
2Sa 19:8 So the king got up and sat in the gate, …
Rut 4:1 Meanwhile, Boaz went to the gate and sat down there.…

while all the troops marched out by hundreds and by thousands.

The divisions reflect an organized army under established leadership. David’s forces marched out to confront fellow Israelites who had joined Absalom, making the battle a painful consequence of rebellion within his own house and nation.

1Sa 29:2 As the Philistine leaders marched out…
2Ch 25:5 Then Amaziah gathered the people of Judah…
Exo 18:21 Furthermore, select capable men from among the people…

Now the king had commanded Joab, Abishai, and Ittai,

David placed the instruction directly before the commanders leading his forces. Joab commanded the army, Abishai was a proven warrior and Joab’s brother, and Ittai the Gittite had remained loyally with David during Absalom’s revolt.

2Sa 20:4-7 Then the king said to Amasa, “Summon the men of Judah…
2Sa 15:19-22 Then the king said to Ittai the Gittite,…
2Sa 16:9-10 Then Abishai son of Zeruiah said to the king,…

“Treat the young man Absalom gently for my sake.”

Though Absalom had rebelled and endangered the kingdom, David remained deeply concerned for his son. His appeal revealed the painful conflict between his duty as king and his love as a father.

2Sa 14:24 But the king added, “He may return to his house,…
2Sa 13:39 And King David longed to go to Absalom,…
1Sa 26:9-11 But David said to Abishai, “Do not destroy him…

And all the people heard the king’s orders

The army heard David’s command before going into battle. No commander could claim ignorance of the king’s desire that Absalom be spared.

2Ki 23:1-3 Then the king summoned all the elders of Judah…
2Ch 34:29-31 Then the king summoned all the elders of Judah…
Est 1:20-22 The edict the king issues will be heard throughout…

to each of the commanders regarding Absalom.

David’s specific charge made clear that the coming conflict was more than a military struggle. Israel was fighting against the king’s own son, and the outcome would bring grief even in victory.

2Sa 14:21-23 Then the king said to Joab, “I hereby grant this request.…
2Sa 14:28-33 Now Absalom lived in Jerusalem two years.…
2Sa 19:4-6 But the king cried out, “O my son Absalom!…

So David’s army marched into the field to engage Israel,

David’s loyal forces, led by Joab, Abishai, and Ittai, went out against Absalom’s army. Israel was divided under competing kings, with David’s servants fighting fellow Israelites who had joined his son’s rebellion. The conflict exposed the bitter consequences of rebellion within David’s own house and throughout the nation.

2Sa 17:24 Then David went to Mahanaim, and Absalom crossed…
2Sa 17:26 So the Israelites and Absalom camped in the land of Gilead.
2Sa 17:11 Instead, I advise that all Israel from Dan to Beersheba…

and the battle took place in the forest of Ephraim.

The battle was fought in a dense wooded region, likely east of the Jordan in Gilead. The difficult terrain favored David’s experienced men and brought confusion and heavy losses to Absalom’s larger force. The forest became an instrument of judgment, claiming more lives than the fighting itself.

Jos 17:15 Joshua answered them, “If you have so many people…”…
Jos 17:18 because the hill country will be yours as well.…
Jdg 12:4 Jephthah then gathered all the men of Gilead…

There the people of Israel were defeated by David’s servants,

Absalom’s supporters, called “the people of Israel,” had gathered against David in an attempt to remove him from the throne. David’s forces, led by Joab, Abishai, and Ittai, prevailed in the forest of Ephraim. The battle exposed the deep division caused by Absalom’s rebellion and confirmed David’s restoration as Israel’s king.

2Sa 2:17 The battle that day was intense, and Abner and the men…
2Sa 10:18 But the Arameans fled before Israel, and David killed…
1Ch 19:18 But the Arameans fled before Israel, …

and the slaughter was great that day—twenty thousand men.

The scale of the losses revealed the terrible cost of Israel’s civil war. The forest itself contributed to the destruction, as its difficult terrain claimed more lives than direct combat. Absalom’s revolt brought widespread death upon the nation and upon those who followed him against the king.

Jdg 20:35 The LORD defeated Benjamin in the presence of Israel…
1Sa 4:10-11 So the Philistines fought, and Israel was defeated…
2Sa 8:13 And David made a name for himself when he returned…

The battle spread over the whole countryside,

David’s forces and Absalom’s army fought across the forest of Ephraim east of the Jordan. The rough, wooded landscape broke up the armies and turned the conflict into scattered engagements, making command, movement, and escape difficult.

1Sa 4:2 The Philistines arrayed themselves against Israel,…
Jos 10:10 And the LORD threw them into confusion before Israel,…
1Ch 14:16 So David did as God had commanded him, and…

and that day the forest devoured more people than the sword.

Ravines, thickets, steep ground, and other hazards of the forest caused greater losses than direct combat. The terrain became an instrument of judgment against Absalom’s rebellion and helped secure David’s victory.

Jer 21:14 I will punish you as your deeds deserve, declares the LORD.…
Psa 83:14 As fire consumes a forest, as a flame sets the mountains…
Zec 11:1-2 Open your doors, O Lebanon, that the fire may consume…

Now Absalom was riding on his mule

Mules were associated with the royal household and marked Absalom as a king’s son. Even in rebellion, he moved with the privilege and appearance of royal authority.

2Sa 13:29 So Absalom’s young men did to Amnon as Absalom ordered.…
1Ki 1:33 “Take my servants with you,” said the king.…
1Ki 1:44 And with Solomon, the king has sent Zadok the priest,…

when he met the servants of David,

David’s experienced forces had engaged Absalom’s army in the forest of Ephraim. As the battle turned against the rebels, Absalom’s escape became urgent.

2Sa 2:17 The battle that day was intense, and Abner and the men…
2Sa 2:23 So Abner thrust the butt of his spear into his stomach…

and as the mule went under the thick branches of a large oak,

The wooded terrain proved more dangerous to Absalom’s army than open battle. While fleeing beneath the branches, Absalom encountered the obstacle that ended his escape.

1Ki 13:14 He found him sitting under an oak tree…
Gen 35:4 So they gave Jacob all their foreign gods…
Jos 24:26 Joshua recorded these things in the Book of the Law of God.…

Absalom’s head was caught fast in the tree.

Absalom became trapped in the branches, apparently by his head or hair, leaving him unable to flee or defend himself. His pride and rebellion had brought him from seeking David’s throne to hanging helplessly in the forest.

2Sa 14:25-26 Now there was not a man in all Israel as handsome…
Gen 22:13 Then Abraham looked up and saw behind him a ram…

The mule under him kept going,

The animal continued forward, abandoning its rider suspended in the tree. Absalom’s royal mount could not preserve him when his revolt collapsed.

Num 22:28-30 Then the LORD opened the donkey’s mouth,…
1Ki 13:24-28 As he went on his way, a lion met him on the road…

so that he was suspended in midair.

Absalom was left exposed between the branches and the ground, awaiting the arrival of David’s men. His helpless condition marked the decisive end of his rebellion against his father and God’s anointed king.

Jos 10:26-27 After this, Joshua struck down and killed the kings,…
Gal 3:13 Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law…

When one of the men saw this,

A soldier in David’s army saw Absalom hanging from the branches after his mule had gone on beneath him during the battle in the forest of Ephraim.

2Ki 7:9-10 Finally, they said, “We are not doing what is right.…

The soldier reported the discovery to Joab, David’s commander, whose decisions would determine what happened next.

2Sa 20:16-17 a wise woman called out from the city, “Listen! Listen!”…
2Sa 11:18-19 Joab sent to David a full account of the battle…

“I just saw Absalom

Absalom, David’s rebellious son, attempted to seize the kingdom and plunged Israel into civil war. In 2 Samuel 18:10, a soldier reported seeing him.

2Sa 14:25-26 Now there was not a man in all Israel as handsome…
2Sa 15:1-6 Some time later, Absalom provided for himself…

Absalom’s helpless condition left him exposed in the midst of the fighting, bringing his rebellion to a decisive end.

Jos 8:29 He hung the king of Ai on a tree until evening…
Jos 10:26-27 After this, Joshua struck down and killed the kings,…

“You just saw him!” Joab exclaimed.

Joab reacted with urgency when the soldier reported finding Absalom helpless in the tree. Absalom’s defeat offered David’s commanders an opportunity to end the rebellion, yet the king had publicly ordered his men to deal gently with his son.

1Sa 26:8-11 Today God has delivered your enemy into your hand.…
2Sa 1:14-16 So David asked him, “Why were you not afraid”…
2Sa 4:9-12 As surely as the LORD lives, who has redeemed my life…

“Why did you not strike him to the ground right there?

Joab regarded Absalom as the chief threat to David’s throne and expected the soldier to act decisively. The soldier’s restraint reflected both obedience to David’s command and the danger of acting against the king’s wishes.

1Sa 24:4-7 So David’s men said to him, “This is the day…”…

I would have given you ten shekels of silver

1Sa 26:9-11 But David said to Abishai, “Do not destroy him…
2Sa 1:14 So David asked him, “Why were you not afraid”…

2Sa 20:6-7 And David said to Abishai, “Now Sheba the son of Bichri…

‘Protect the young man Absalom for my sake.’

David’s concern for Absalom showed both his fatherly grief and his desire that the victory not be secured by harming his son.

2Sa 13:37-39 Now Absalom fled and went to Talmai son of Ammihud…
2Sa 14:33 So Joab went and told the king, and David summoned Absalom…

If I had jeopardized my own life—

The soldier had heard David’s public command that Absalom be treated gently. Killing the king’s son would have placed him in direct violation of that order and exposed him to David’s judgment.

1Sa 28:21 When the woman came to Saul and saw how distraught he was,…
Est 4:16 Go and assemble all the Jews who can be found…
2Sa 23:17 “Far be it from me, O LORD, to do this!”…

and nothing is hidden from the king—

David would soon learn how Absalom had died and who was responsible. Events within the army, especially the death of the heir apparent, could not be concealed from the king.

1Ki 10:3 And Solomon answered all her questions;…
2Ki 6:12 But one of his servants replied, “No one, my lord the king.…
2Sa 14:20 Joab your servant has done this to bring about this change…

you would have abandoned me.”

Joab’s record showed that he acted decisively for his own purposes, even when his actions conflicted with David’s will. The soldier knew Joab would not shield him from punishment if David held him accountable.

2Ti 4:16 At my first defense, no one stood with me,…

But Joab declared, “I am not going to wait like this with you!”

Joab refused to leave Absalom suspended in the tree while the rebellion remained unresolved. As commander of David’s army, he acted according to what he believed was necessary to secure the kingdom, setting aside David’s command to deal gently with Absalom. His decision exposed the continuing conflict between David’s personal grief as a father and Joab’s concern for national stability.

1Sa 20:38 Then Jonathan cried out, “Hurry! Make haste! Do not delay!”…
Exo 12:39 Since their dough had no leaven, the people…

And he took three spears in his hand

Joab deliberately armed himself to finish what the battle had begun. His action showed that he regarded Absalom’s death as necessary to end the threat against David’s throne.

and thrust them through the heart of Absalom

Though Absalom was helpless, Joab killed him without hesitation. Absalom’s rebellion, betrayal of his father, and attempt to seize the kingdom had brought him to this end. Joab’s act removed the immediate danger but also directly violated David’s instruction.

Absalom had set up for himself a pillar

Such monuments marked persons or events and publicly preserved their memory. Absalom’s pillar was a deliberate memorial to himself rather than a monument honoring God or commemorating His works.

Gen 35:14 So Jacob set up a pillar in the place where God had spoken…
Gen 28:18 Early the next morning, Jacob took the stone…
Gen 31:45 So Jacob picked out a stone and set it up as a pillar,

in the King’s Valley,

The site was near Jerusalem, likely in the Kidron Valley, where its location connected Absalom’s memorial with the royal city and the house of David.

for he had said, “I have no son to preserve the memory of my name.”

Earlier, Absalom is said to have had three sons and a daughter. His statement may indicate that his sons had died or that none remained to continue his name.

the good news

Israel’s forces had defeated the rebels, ending the immediate threat to David’s throne. Yet the victory was overshadowed by Absalom’s death, making the report painful for David as a father.

that the LORD has avenged him

David’s victory was understood as the Lord’s judgment against those who had risen against His anointed king. The rebellion had been defeated by God’s providence rather than merely by military strength.

Deu 32:43 Rejoice, O heavens, with Him, and let all God's angels…

Absalom and those who followed him had sought to remove David from the throne. Their defeat restored David’s rule and preserved the kingdom promised to his house.

But Joab replied,

As commander of David’s army, Joab controlled the report that would reach the king after the battle. Though Absalom’s rebellion had been defeated, Joab knew the outcome carried deep personal sorrow for David.

2Sa 3:24-25 So Joab went to the king and said, “What have you done?…
2Sa 19:5-7 Then Joab went into the house and said to the king,…

“You are not the man to take good news today.

Ahimaaz had served as a messenger before, but Joab judged that he was not suited to carry news that would wound the king. Israel had won the battle, yet Absalom’s death would overshadow the victory in David’s eyes.

You may do it another day,

Joab did not reject Ahimaaz permanently but withheld this assignment because of its painful nature and the king’s likely response.

Absalom’s death ended the immediate threat to David’s reign, but it also brought the consequences of his rebellion to a tragic end. The victory that preserved the kingdom became a day of grief for its king.

Joab chose a foreign servant from Cush, likely the region south of Egypt, to carry the battle report to David. The man was evidently trusted and capable of covering the distance quickly.

2Sa 4:10-11 when someone told me, ‘Look, Saul is dead,’…

“Go, tell the king what you have seen.”

The Cushite had witnessed the defeat of Absalom’s forces and could report the victory firsthand. Joab sent him with news that included Absalom’s death, though David had commanded that the young man be treated gently.

2Ki 7:9 Finally, they said, “We are not doing what is right.…
2Sa 1:4 “What was the outcome?” David asked. “Please tell me.” ……

The Cushite bowed to Joab

He recognized Joab’s authority as commander of the army and accepted the assignment without objection.

“No matter what, please let me also run behind the Cushite!”

Joab had sent the Cushite to carry the report of the battle and Absalom’s death. Ahimaaz wanted to take part in delivering the news to David, even if he arrived second.

2Sa 1:6-10 “I happened to be on Mount Gilboa,” he replied……
1Sa 4:12-17 That same day a Benjamite ran from the battle line…
2Ki 7:9-10 Finally, they said, “We are not doing what is right.…

“My son,” Joab replied,

Joab addressed Ahimaaz with familiar concern, seeking to discourage him from an unnecessary task.

1Sa 24:16 When David had finished saying these things,…
Pro 1:8 Listen, my son, to your father’s instruction,…

“why do you want to run, since you will not receive a reward?”

Ahimaaz had no official message that would bring him honor or reward from the king. Joab knew the report would bring David grief, not celebration.

1Co 9:24 Do you not know that in a race all the runners run…
Mat 6:1 Be careful not to perform your righteous acts before men…
2Jn 1:8 Watch yourselves, so that you do not lose…

“No matter what, I want to run!” he replied.

Ahimaaz, son of Zadok the priest, was eager to carry the report to David. Having previously served as a reliable messenger for David, he likely desired both to fulfill his duty and to be the first to bring news from the battle.

Psa 119:32 I run in the path of Your commandments…
Heb 12:1 Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud…
Jer 12:5 If you have raced with men on foot, how can you compete…

“Then run!” Joab told him.

Joab permitted Ahimaaz to go, though he had already sent the Cushite with the official report. Ahimaaz would soon reach David first, but Joab’s earlier caution proved warranted because the news included Absalom’s death.

Ahimaaz’s speed and familiarity with the land enabled him to arrive first. Yet his report to David would be hesitant and incomplete, revealing that speed did not make him better prepared to deliver the painful news.

Now David was sitting between the two gates

David waited within Mahanaim’s fortified gate complex while the battle against Absalom unfolded. As king, he remained near the place where official reports would arrive, anxiously awaiting word concerning both the army and his son.

A solitary runner was likely a messenger sent ahead with news from the battlefield. His approach signaled that the battle had reached its conclusion, though David did not yet know whether the report would bring relief or grief.

From his position at the city gate, the watchman reported the approaching runner to David, who was waiting anxiously for news from the battle.

The sight of a lone runner suggested that he carried urgent news from the battlefield rather than leading a troop movement.

2Ki 9:19-20 So the king sent out a second horseman, who went to them…
1Ki 1:42 As he was speaking, suddenly Jonathan the son of Abiathar…

“This one also brings good news,” said the king.

David expected the runner to report victory over Absalom’s forces. His hope was soon tempered by the painful news that Absalom had been killed.

Ahimaaz, son of the priest Zadok, had served David as a messenger and was recognized by his manner of running. His arrival suggested that news from the battle had come quickly.

2Sa 15:36 Indeed, their two sons, Ahimaaz son of Zadok…

“This is a good man,” said the king.

David knew Ahimaaz to be loyal and dependable. He assumed that a trusted servant would not be sent with a report of disaster.

1Ki 1:42-43 As he was speaking, suddenly Jonathan the son of Abiathar…

David expected word that his forces had defeated Absalom’s rebellion. Yet the victory carried personal sorrow, since the rebellion had been led by David’s own son.

2Sa 4:10 when someone told me, ‘Look, Saul is dead,’…
Pro 25:25 Like cold water to a weary soul is good news…

Then Ahimaaz called out to the king, “All is well!”

Ahimaaz arrived with news that David’s forces had prevailed over Absalom’s rebellion. He announced the victory before addressing the painful details surrounding Absalom.

1Ki 1:31 Bathsheba bowed facedown in homage to the king…
1Ki 1:16 And Bathsheba bowed down in homage to the king,…

He continued, “Blessed be the LORD your God!

Ahimaaz gave God credit for the outcome rather than praising David’s army or his commanders. The victory preserved David’s kingdom despite the revolt led by his own son.

1Sa 25:32-33 Then David said to Abigail, “Blessed be the LORD,…
1Ki 1:48 Blessed be the LORD, the God of Israel! Today…
Gen 14:20 and blessed be God Most High, who has delivered your enemies…

He has delivered up the men who raised their hands against my lord the king.”

The rebels had opposed David’s God-given rule and threatened the stability of Israel. Ahimaaz understood their defeat as the LORD’s judgment against those who had risen against the king.

1Sa 26:8 Today God has delivered your enemy into your hand.…
1Sa 24:18 And you have declared this day how you have treated me well,…
2Sa 5:19 So David inquired of the LORD, “Should I go up…

The king asked, “Is the young man Absalom all right?”

David’s first concern is not the victory or the security of his throne, but Absalom. Though Absalom had led a rebellion and sought his father’s life, David still loved him as his son and hoped he might be spared. His concern reveals the painful conflict between David’s duty as king and his grief as a father.

2Sa 19:4 But the king cried out, “O my son Absalom!…
2Sa 15:30 But David continued up the Mount of Olives,…
2Sa 13:39 And King David longed to go to Absalom,…

And Ahimaaz replied, “When Joab sent the king’s servant and your servant, I saw a great tumult, but I do not know what it was.”

Ahimaaz avoids speaking plainly about Absalom’s death. He had seen the disorder surrounding Joab’s actions but leaves the full report for another messenger. His answer delays the news David most fears, heightening the sorrow that will soon follow.

1Sa 4:14 Eli heard the outcry and asked, “Why this commotion?”…
1Ki 1:41 Now Adonijah and all his guests were finishing his feast…
1Sa 14:20 Then Saul and all his troops assembled and marched…

“Move aside,” said the king,

David had learned that Absalom was dead, and the news left him overwhelmed with grief. He needed the Cushite messenger to wait while he received the approaching report from Ahimaaz.

Rut 4:1 Meanwhile, Boaz went to the gate and sat down there.…
1Sa 9:27 As they were going down to the edge of the city…
Isa 52:11 Depart, depart, go out from there! Touch no unclean thing;…

The messenger remained nearby but gave David room to hear the next report and respond. Court attendants and messengers were expected to obey the king’s directions promptly.

2Ch 9:7 How blessed are your men! How blessed are these servants…

So he stepped aside.

The messenger complied, leaving David free to hear the fuller account of the battle. The brief pause heightens the tension before David learns the final details of Absalom’s death.

Gen 45:1 Then Joseph could no longer control himself…
Pro 4:15 Avoid it; do not travel on it. Turn from it and pass on by.

Just then the Cushite came and said,

The Cushite was a foreign servant in David’s administration, likely from Cush south of Egypt. His arrival followed Ahimaaz’s report and brought the fuller account of the battle.

2Sa 15:13 Then a messenger came to David and reported,…
2Sa 1:2-4 On the third day a man with torn clothes and dust…
1Sa 4:12-17 That same day a Benjamite ran from the battle line…

Absalom and the forces that joined him had rebelled against the king the LORD had established. Their defeat ended the immediate threat to David’s throne, though Absalom’s fate would bring David deep sorrow.

Psa 3:1-2 A Psalm of David, when he fled from his son Absalom.…
Psa 2:1-2 Why do the nations rage and the peoples plot in vain?…

The king asked the Cushite, “Is the young man Absalom all right?”

David’s concern for Absalom remains personal and urgent despite his son’s rebellion and the threat it posed to the kingdom. Waiting outside the city for news from the battle, David thinks first of his son rather than the victory of his army. His question exposes the painful conflict between his responsibility to preserve the throne and his love for Absalom.

2Ki 4:26 Please run out now to meet her and ask, ‘Are you all right?…

2Sa 13:37-39 Now Absalom fled and went to Talmai son of Ammihud…

And the Cushite replied, “May the enemies of my lord the king and all who rise up against you to harm you be like that young man.”

The Cushite does not state Absalom’s death directly, but his answer makes it clear that Absalom has been defeated and killed. He speaks as a loyal messenger who views Absalom as an enemy of the king and treats his fate as the proper end of those who violently oppose David.

1Sa 25:26-29 Now, my lord, as surely as the LORD lives…
2Sa 22:38-41 I pursued my enemies and destroyed them;…
Psa 21:8-12 Your hand will apprehend all Your enemies;…

The king was shaken

David was overwhelmed by the report of Absalom’s death. Though Absalom had led a rebellion against him, David still mourned him as a beloved son.

“O my son Absalom! My son, my son Absalom!

The repeated cry shows that David’s grief was personal, not merely concern over the death of a failed rebel. Absalom’s sin and betrayal had not erased David’s love for him.

Jer 31:15 This is what the LORD says: “A voice is heard in Ramah…

David’s lament closes with the loss of a son rather than the triumph of a king. The rebellion was ended, but the victory came at great cost to David’s household.
