Depart, depart, go out from there!
This phrase is a call to action, urging the Israelites to leave Babylon. Historically, this reflects the period after the Babylonian exile when the Israelites were allowed to return to Jerusalem. The repetition of "depart" emphasizes urgency and the importance of obedience to God's command. This echoes the Exodus from Egypt, where the Israelites were called to leave a place of captivity. It also foreshadows the call for believers to separate themselves from worldly influences and sin.

Touch no unclean thing;
In the context of the Old Testament, touching an unclean thing would render a person ceremonially unclean, as outlined in Levitical law. This command underscores the need for holiness and purity among God's people. It is a call to avoid idolatry and pagan practices associated with Babylon. In the New Testament, this concept is echoed in 2 Corinthians 6:17, where believers are urged to separate from impurity and live sanctified lives.

come out from it,
This phrase reinforces the call to leave Babylon, symbolizing a departure from sin and spiritual bondage. It is a call to return to the Promised Land, both physically and spiritually. Theologically, it represents the call for Christians to live distinct lives, set apart for God's purposes, as seen in Revelation 18:4, which warns believers to come out of Babylon to avoid sharing in its sins.

purify yourselves,
Purification was a significant aspect of Israelite worship, involving rituals to cleanse oneself from defilement. This command highlights the need for spiritual and moral cleansing before serving God. It points to the necessity of repentance and sanctification, themes that are central to the Christian faith. The purification process is a type of the cleansing work of Jesus Christ, who purifies believers through His sacrifice.

you who carry the vessels of the LORD.
The vessels of the LORD refer to the sacred items used in temple worship, which were taken to Babylon during the exile. Those who carry them are likely the priests and Levites, responsible for maintaining the holiness of these objects. This phrase emphasizes the responsibility of those who serve God to maintain purity and holiness. It also typifies the role of believers as vessels of honor, called to carry the presence of God in their lives, as seen in 2 Timothy 2:21.

What Does Isaiah 52:11 Mean
Depart, depart

– The double command underscores urgency and certainty.

– Historically, God is directing exiles to leave Babylon without delay (Isaiah 48:20).

– Spiritually, He still calls His people to decisive separation from systems opposed to Him (Revelation 18:4; 2 Corinthians 6:17–18).

– Repetition reminds us that half-measures are not enough; lingering only postpones freedom.

go out from there!

– This is a concrete step, not a vague wish.

• Leave the place of bondage.

• Leave the mindset of bondage.

– Exodus imagery echoes: just as Israel walked out of Egypt, captives must walk out of Babylon (Exodus 12:41; Jeremiah 51:45).

– God’s people move when He says move, trusting His timing and provision (Psalm 105:37).

Touch no unclean thing;

– Cleanness matters to a holy God (Leviticus 11:44).

– Purity is proactive: refuse contact with whatever defiles—idolatry, compromise, sin habits (Ephesians 5:11).

– Paul applies this same line to the church: “Therefore, come out from among them and be separate… touch no unclean thing” (2 Corinthians 6:17).

come out from it,

– Separation has both direction and destination:

• From corruption.

• Toward covenant fellowship with God (James 4:8).

– Remaining in a polluted environment eventually pollutes the person (1 Corinthians 15:33).

– Jeremiah gives the same warning about Babylon’s judgment: “Flee from the midst of Babylon… each of you, save your life” (Jeremiah 51:6).

purify yourselves,

– Leaving is only half the call; cleansing follows.

– Old-covenant priests washed before service (Exodus 19:10; 30:19-21).

– New-covenant believers pursue daily cleansing by confession and obedience (1 John 1:9; James 4:8).

– Purification is not self-help; it is cooperating with God’s gracious work (Philippians 2:12-13).

you who carry the vessels of the LORD.

– Specifically aimed at Levites transporting temple articles back to Jerusalem (Ezra 1:7-11).

– Their cargo is holy, so their conduct must match (Numbers 4:15).

– By extension, all who bear God’s name carry something sacred—His presence (1 Peter 2:9; 2 Timothy 2:21).

– Our witness is either enhanced or hindered by our personal purity.

summary

Isaiah 52:11 is a clarion call: separate from a defiling world, act promptly, stay clean, and remember your sacred trust. God wants liberated, holy people who reflect His character while they carry His treasure into a watching world.

(11) Depart ye . . .--The command is addressed to the exiles in Babylon. They are not to plunder or carry off spoil that would render them unclean. They are to bring only "the vessels of Jehovah," i.e., the gold and silver which had been taken from His temple, and which Cyrus restored by them (Ezra 1:7). In this case the bearers are the Levites. Commonly, however, the phrase is used of "armour-bearers," and this meaning is given to it by many commentators, as pointing to the whole body of the people as filling that function for the great king (1Kings 14:27-28).

Verse 11. - Go ye out from thence; i.e. "from Babylon" - the standpoint of the prophet in the present chapter being Jerusalem. When the time came, earnest exhortations to depart would be found not superfluous, for there would be an indisposition on the part of some to quit their possessions, and of others to affront the perils of the way. Touch no unclean thing. Bring with you none of the Babylonian idols, none of the Babylonian charms, spells, and the like (see the comment on Isaiah 47:9). Be ye clean; rather, purify yourselves. The departing captives generally are called upon to avoid polluting themselves with the unclean things of Babylon; but for those who bear the vessels of the Lord this negative purity is insufficient. They are for-really to purify themselves (2 Chronicles 29:34) before undertaking their sacred office. By "the vessels of the Lord" we must understand those which Nebuchadnezzar carried off from the temple (2 Kings 25:14-16; Daniel 1:2), and which, on the return of the Jews from captivity, were restored by Cyrus (Ezra 1:7-11) and Artaxerxes (Ezra 8:25-34).
