Now the Feast of Unleavened Bread, which is called the Passover, was approaching.1Ἤγγιζεν δὲ ἑορτὴ τῶν ἀζύμων λεγομένη Πάσχα
The chief priests and the experts in the law were trying to find some way to execute Jesus, for they were afraid of the people.
Then Satan entered Judas, the one called Iscariot, who was one of the twelve.3Εἰσῆλθεν δὲ Σατανᾶς εἰς Ἰούδαν τὸν καλούμενον Ἰσκαριώτην ὄντα ἐκ τοῦ ἀριθμοῦ τῶν δώδεκα
He went away and discussed with the chief priests and officers of the temple guard how he might betray Jesus, handing him over to them.4καὶ ἀπελθὼν συνελάλησεν τοῖς ἀρχιερεῦσιν καὶ στρατηγοῖς τὸ πῶς αὐτοῖς παραδῷ αὐτόν
They were delighted and arranged to give him money.5καὶ ἐχάρησαν καὶ συνέθεντο αὐτῷ ἀργύριον δοῦναι
So Judas agreed and began looking for an opportunity to betray Jesus when no crowd was present.
Then the day for the feast of Unleavened Bread came, on which the Passover lamb had to be sacrificed.7Ἦλθεν δὲ ἡμέρα τῶν ἀζύμων [ἐν] ἔδει θύεσθαι τὸ πάσχα
Jesus sent Peter and John, saying, "Go and prepare the Passover for us to eat."8καὶ ἀπέστειλεν Πέτρον καὶ Ἰωάννην εἰπών Πορευθέντες ἑτοιμάσατε ἡμῖν τὸ πάσχα ἵνα φάγωμεν
They said to him, "Where do you want us to prepare it?"9Οἱ δὲ εἶπαν αὐτῷ Ποῦ θέλεις ἑτοιμάσωμεν
He said to them, "Listen, when you have entered the city, a man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him into the house that he enters,10 δὲ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς Ἰδοὺ εἰσελθόντων ὑμῶν εἰς τὴν πόλιν συναντήσει ὑμῖν ἄνθρωπος κεράμιον ὕδατος βαστάζων ἀκολουθήσατε αὐτῷ εἰς τὴν οἰκίαν εἰς ἣν εἰσπορεύεται
and tell the owner of the house, 'The Teacher says to you, "Where is the guest room where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?"'11καὶ ἐρεῖτε τῷ οἰκοδεσπότῃ τῆς οἰκίας Λέγει σοι Διδάσκαλος Ποῦ ἐστιν τὸ κατάλυμα ὅπου τὸ πάσχα μετὰ τῶν μαθητῶν μου φάγω
Then he will show you a large furnished room upstairs.
So they went and found things just as he had told them, and they prepared the Passover.
Now when the hour came, Jesus took his place at the table and the apostles joined him.14Καὶ ὅτε ἐγένετο ὥρα ἀνέπεσεν καὶ οἱ ἀπόστολοι σὺν αὐτῷ
And he said to them, "I have earnestly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer.15καὶ εἶπεν πρὸς αὐτούς Ἐπιθυμίᾳ ἐπεθύμησα τοῦτο τὸ πάσχα φαγεῖν μεθ’ ὑμῶν πρὸ τοῦ με παθεῖν
For I tell you, I will not eat it again until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God."16λέγω γὰρ ὑμῖν ὅτι 〈οὐκέτι〉 οὐ μὴ φάγω αὐτὸ ἕως ὅτου πληρωθῇ ἐν τῇ βασιλείᾳ τοῦ Θεοῦ
Then he took a cup, and after giving thanks he said, "Take this and divide it among yourselves.17Καὶ δεξάμενος ποτήριον εὐχαριστήσας εἶπεν Λάβετε τοῦτο καὶ διαμερίσατε εἰς ἑαυτούς
For I tell you that from now on I will not drink of the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes."18λέγω γὰρ ὑμῖν [ὅτι] οὐ μὴ πίω ἀπὸ τοῦ νῦν ἀπὸ τοῦ γενήματος τῆς ἀμπέλου ἕως οὗ βασιλεία τοῦ Θεοῦ ἔλθῃ
Then he took bread, and after giving thanks he broke it and gave it to them, saying, "This is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me."19Καὶ λαβὼν ἄρτον εὐχαριστήσας ἔκλασεν καὶ ἔδωκεν αὐτοῖς λέγων Τοῦτό ἐστιν τὸ σῶμά μου τὸ ὑπὲρ ὑμῶν διδόμενον τοῦτο ποιεῖτε εἰς τὴν ἐμὴν ἀνάμνησιν
And in the same way he took the cup after they had eaten, saying, "This cup that is poured out for you is the new covenant in my blood. 20καὶ τὸ ποτήριον ὡσαύτως μετὰ τὸ δειπνῆσαι λέγων Τοῦτο τὸ ποτήριον καινὴ διαθήκη ἐν τῷ αἵματί μου τὸ ὑπὲρ ὑμῶν ἐκχυννόμενον
"But look, the hand of the one who betrays me is with me on the table.21Πλὴν ἰδοὺ χεὶρ τοῦ παραδιδόντος με μετ’ ἐμοῦ ἐπὶ τῆς τραπέζης
For the Son of Man is to go just as it has been determined, but woe to that man by whom he is betrayed!"22ὅτι Υἱὸς μὲν τοῦ ἀνθρώπου κατὰ τὸ ὡρισμένον πορεύεται πλὴν οὐαὶ τῷ ἀνθρώπῳ ἐκείνῳ δι’ οὗ παραδίδοται
So they began to question one another as to which of them it could possibly be who would do this.
A dispute also started among them over which of them was to be regarded as the greatest.24Ἐγένετο δὲ καὶ φιλονεικία ἐν αὐτοῖς τὸ τίς αὐτῶν δοκεῖ εἶναι μείζων
So Jesus said to them, "The kings of the Gentiles lord it over them, and those in authority over them are called 'benefactors.'25 δὲ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς Οἱ βασιλεῖς τῶν ἐθνῶν κυριεύουσιν αὐτῶν καὶ οἱ ἐξουσιάζοντες αὐτῶν εὐεργέται καλοῦνται
Not so with you; instead the one who is greatest among you must become like the youngest, and the leader like the one who serves.26ὑμεῖς δὲ οὐχ οὕτως ἀλλ’ μείζων ἐν ὑμῖν γινέσθω ὡς νεώτερος καὶ ἡγούμενος ὡς διακονῶν
For who is greater, the one who is seated at the table, or the one who serves? Is it not the one who is seated at the table? But I am among you as one who serves.
"You are the ones who have remained with me in my trials.28Ὑμεῖς δέ ἐστε οἱ διαμεμενηκότες μετ’ ἐμοῦ ἐν τοῖς πειρασμοῖς μου
Thus I grant to you a kingdom, just as my Father granted to me,29κἀγὼ διατίθεμαι ὑμῖν καθὼς διέθετό μοι Πατήρ μου βασιλείαν
that you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom, and you will sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel.
"Simon, Simon, pay attention! Satan has demanded to have you all, to sift you like wheat,31Σίμων Σίμων ἰδοὺ Σατανᾶς ἐξῃτήσατο ὑμᾶς τοῦ σινιάσαι ὡς τὸν σῖτον
but I have prayed for you, Simon, that your faith may not fail. When you have turned back, strengthen your brothers."32ἐγὼ δὲ ἐδεήθην περὶ σοῦ ἵνα μὴ ἐκλίπῃ πίστις σου καὶ σύ ποτε ἐπιστρέψας στήρισον τοὺς ἀδελφούς σου
But Peter said to him, "Lord, I am ready to go with you both to prison and to death!"33 δὲ εἶπεν αὐτῷ Κύριε μετὰ σοῦ ἕτοιμός εἰμι καὶ εἰς φυλακὴν καὶ εἰς θάνατον πορεύεσθαι
Jesus replied, "I tell you, Peter, the rooster will not crow today until you have denied three times that you know me." 34 δὲ εἶπεν Λέγω σοι Πέτρε οὐ φωνήσει σήμερον ἀλέκτωρ ἕως τρίς με ἀπαρνήσῃ 〈μὴ〉 εἰδέναι
Then Jesus said to them, "When I sent you out with no money bag, or traveler's bag, or sandals, you didn't lack anything, did you?"
He said to them, "But now, the one who has a money bag must take it, and likewise a traveler's bag too. And the one who has no sword must sell his cloak and buy one.36Εἶπεν δὲ αὐτοῖς Ἀλλὰ νῦν ἔχων βαλλάντιον ἀράτω ὁμοίως καὶ πήραν καὶ μὴ ἔχων πωλησάτω τὸ ἱμάτιον αὐτοῦ καὶ ἀγορασάτω μάχαιραν
For I tell you that this scripture must be fulfilled in me, 'And he was counted with the transgressors.' For what is written about me is being fulfilled."37λέγω γὰρ ὑμῖν ὅτι τοῦτο τὸ γεγραμμένον δεῖ τελεσθῆναι ἐν ἐμοί Τό Καὶ μετὰ ἀνόμων ἐλογίσθη καὶ γὰρ τὸ περὶ ἐμοῦ τέλος ἔχει
So they said, "Look, Lord, here are two swords." Then he told them, "It is enough." 38Οἱ δὲ εἶπαν Κύριε ἰδοὺ μάχαιραι ὧδε δύο δὲ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς Ἱκανόν ἐστιν
Then Jesus went out and made his way, as he customarily did, to the Mount of Olives, and the disciples followed him.39Καὶ ἐξελθὼν ἐπορεύθη κατὰ τὸ ἔθος εἰς τὸ ὄρος τῶν Ἐλαιῶν ἠκολούθησαν δὲ αὐτῷ καὶ οἱ μαθηταί
When he came to the place, he said to them, "Pray that you will not fall into temptation."40γενόμενος δὲ ἐπὶ τοῦ τόπου εἶπεν αὐτοῖς Προσεύχεσθε μὴ εἰσελθεῖν εἰς πειρασμόν
He went away from them about a stone's throw, knelt down, and prayed,41Καὶ αὐτὸς ἀπεσπάσθη ἀπ’ αὐτῶν ὡσεὶ λίθου βολήν καὶ θεὶς τὰ γόνατα προσηύχετο
"Father, if you are willing, take this cup away from me. Yet not my will but yours be done."42λέγων Πάτερ εἰ βούλει παρένεγκε τοῦτο τὸ ποτήριον ἀπ’ ἐμοῦ πλὴν μὴ τὸ θέλημά μου ἀλλὰ τὸ σὸν γινέσθω
[Then an angel from heaven appeared to him and strengthened him.43Ὤφθη δὲ αὐτῷ ἄγγελος ἀπ’ (τοῦ) οὐρανοῦ ἐνισχύων αὐτόν
And in his anguish he prayed more earnestly, and his sweat was like drops of blood falling to the ground.]44καὶ γενόμενος ἐν ἀγωνίᾳ ἐκτενέστερον προσηύχετο καὶ ἐγένετο ἱδρὼς αὐτοῦ ὡσεὶ θρόμβοι αἵματος καταβαίνοντες ἐπὶ τὴν γῆν
When he got up from prayer, he came to the disciples and found them sleeping, exhausted from grief.45Καὶ ἀναστὰς ἀπὸ τῆς προσευχῆς ἐλθὼν πρὸς τοὺς μαθητὰς εὗρεν κοιμωμένους αὐτοὺς ἀπὸ τῆς λύπης
So he said to them, "Why are you sleeping? Get up and pray that you will not fall into temptation!" 46καὶ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς Τί καθεύδετε ἀναστάντες προσεύχεσθε ἵνα μὴ εἰσέλθητε εἰς πειρασμόν
While he was still speaking, suddenly a crowd appeared, and the man named Judas, one of the twelve, was leading them. He walked up to Jesus to kiss him.47Ἔτι αὐτοῦ λαλοῦντος ἰδοὺ ὄχλος καὶ λεγόμενος Ἰούδας εἷς τῶν δώδεκα προήρχετο αὐτούς καὶ ἤγγισεν τῷ Ἰησοῦ φιλῆσαι αὐτόν
But Jesus said to him, "Judas, would you betray the Son of Man with a kiss?"48Ἰησοῦς δὲ εἶπεν αὐτῷ Ἰούδα φιλήματι τὸν Υἱὸν τοῦ ἀνθρώπου παραδίδως
When those who were around him saw what was about to happen, they said, "Lord, should we use our swords?"49Ἰδόντες δὲ οἱ περὶ αὐτὸν τὸ ἐσόμενον εἶπαν Κύριε εἰ πατάξομεν ἐν μαχαίρῃ
Then one of them struck the high priest's slave, cutting off his right ear.50καὶ ἐπάταξεν εἷς τις ἐξ αὐτῶν τοῦ ἀρχιερέως τὸν δοῦλον καὶ ἀφεῖλεν τὸ οὖς αὐτοῦ τὸ δεξιόν
But Jesus said, "Enough of this!" And he touched the man's ear and healed him.51Ἀποκριθεὶς δὲ Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν Ἐᾶτε ἕως τούτου καὶ ἁψάμενος τοῦ ὠτίου ἰάσατο αὐτόν
Then Jesus said to the chief priests, the officers of the temple guard, and the elders who had come out to get him, "Have you come out with swords and clubs like you would against an outlaw?52Εἶπεν δὲ Ἰησοῦς πρὸς τοὺς παραγενομένους ἐπ’ αὐτὸν ἀρχιερεῖς καὶ στρατηγοὺς τοῦ ἱεροῦ καὶ πρεσβυτέρους Ὡς ἐπὶ λῃστὴν ἐξήλθατε μετὰ μαχαιρῶν καὶ ξύλων
Day after day when I was with you in the temple courts, you did not arrest me. But this is your hour, and that of the power of darkness!" 53καθ’ ἡμέραν ὄντος μου μεθ’ ὑμῶν ἐν τῷ ἱερῷ οὐκ ἐξετείνατε τὰς χεῖρας ἐπ’ ἐμέ ἀλλ’ αὕτη ἐστὶν ὑμῶν ὥρα καὶ ἐξουσία τοῦ σκότους
Then they arrested Jesus, led him away, and brought him into the high priest's house. But Peter was following at a distance.54Συλλαβόντες δὲ αὐτὸν ἤγαγον καὶ εἰσήγαγον εἰς τὴν οἰκίαν τοῦ ἀρχιερέως δὲ Πέτρος ἠκολούθει μακρόθεν
When they had made a fire in the middle of the courtyard and sat down together, Peter sat down among them.55Περιαψάντων δὲ πῦρ ἐν μέσῳ τῆς αὐλῆς καὶ συνκαθισάντων ἐκάθητο Πέτρος μέσος αὐτῶν
Then a slave girl, seeing him as he sat in the firelight, stared at him and said, "This man was with him too!"56ἰδοῦσα δὲ αὐτὸν παιδίσκη τις καθήμενον πρὸς τὸ φῶς καὶ ἀτενίσασα αὐτῷ εἶπεν Καὶ οὗτος σὺν αὐτῷ ἦν
But Peter denied it: "Woman, I don't know him!"57 δὲ ἠρνήσατο λέγων Οὐκ οἶδα αὐτόν γύναι
Then a little later someone else saw him and said, "You are one of them too." But Peter said, "Man, I am not!"58Καὶ μετὰ βραχὺ ἕτερος ἰδὼν αὐτὸν ἔφη Καὶ σὺ ἐξ αὐτῶν εἶ δὲ Πέτρος ἔφη Ἄνθρωπε οὐκ εἰμί
And after about an hour still another insisted, "Certainly this man was with him, because he too is a Galilean."59Καὶ διαστάσης ὡσεὶ ὥρας μιᾶς ἄλλος τις διϊσχυρίζετο λέγων Ἐπ’ ἀληθείας καὶ οὗτος μετ’ αὐτοῦ ἦν καὶ γὰρ Γαλιλαῖός ἐστιν
But Peter said, "Man, I don't know what you're talking about!" At that moment, while he was still speaking, a rooster crowed.60Εἶπεν δὲ Πέτρος Ἄνθρωπε οὐκ οἶδα λέγεις καὶ παραχρῆμα ἔτι λαλοῦντος αὐτοῦ ἐφώνησεν ἀλέκτωρ
Then the Lord turned and looked straight at Peter, and Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how he had said to him, "Before a rooster crows today, you will deny me three times."61καὶ στραφεὶς Κύριος ἐνέβλεψεν τῷ Πέτρῳ καὶ ὑπεμνήσθη Πέτρος τοῦ λόγου τοῦ Κυρίου ὡς εἶπεν αὐτῷ ὅτι Πρὶν ἀλέκτορα φωνῆσαι σήμερον ἀπαρνήσῃ με τρίς
And he went outside and wept bitterly.
Now the men who were holding Jesus under guard began to mock him and beat him.63Καὶ οἱ ἄνδρες οἱ συνέχοντες αὐτὸν ἐνέπαιζον αὐτῷ δέροντες
They blindfolded him and asked him repeatedly, "Prophesy! Who hit you?"64καὶ περικαλύψαντες αὐτὸν ⧼ἔτυπτον αὐτοῦ τὸ πρόσωπον καὶ⧽ ἐπηρώτων λέγοντες Προφήτευσον τίς ἐστιν παίσας σε
They also said many other things against him, reviling him.
When day came, the council of the elders of the people gathered together, both the chief priests and the experts in the law. Then they led Jesus away to their council66Καὶ ὡς ἐγένετο ἡμέρα συνήχθη τὸ πρεσβυτέριον τοῦ λαοῦ ἀρχιερεῖς τε καὶ γραμματεῖς καὶ ἀπήγαγον αὐτὸν εἰς τὸ συνέδριον αὐτῶν λέγοντες
and said, "If you are the Christ, tell us." But he said to them, "If I tell you, you will not believe,67Εἰ σὺ εἶ Χριστός εἰπὸν ἡμῖν Εἶπεν δὲ αὐτοῖς Ἐὰν ὑμῖν εἴπω οὐ μὴ πιστεύσητε
and if I ask you, you will not answer.68ἐὰν δὲ ἐρωτήσω οὐ μὴ ἀποκριθῆτε
But from now on the Son of Man will be seated at the right hand of the power of God."69ἀπὸ τοῦ νῦν δὲ ἔσται Υἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου καθήμενος ἐκ δεξιῶν τῆς δυνάμεως τοῦ Θεοῦ
So they all said, "Are you the Son of God, then?" He answered them, "You say that I am."70Εἶπαν δὲ πάντες Σὺ οὖν εἶ Υἱὸς τοῦ Θεοῦ δὲ πρὸς αὐτοὺς ἔφη Ὑμεῖς λέγετε ὅτι ἐγώ εἰμι
Then they said, "Why do we need further testimony? We have heard it ourselves from his own lips!" 71Οἱ δὲ εἶπαν Τί ἔτι ἔχομεν μαρτυρίας χρείαν αὐτοὶ γὰρ ἠκούσαμεν ἀπὸ τοῦ στόματος αὐτοῦ
