He answered,
This phrase indicates a response from Jesus, suggesting a direct answer to a question or situation. In the context of Luke 22, Jesus is responding to His disciples' inquiry about where to prepare the Passover meal. This highlights Jesus' foreknowledge and authority, as He provides specific instructions.

“When you enter the city,
The city referred to is Jerusalem, a central location in Jewish religious life and the site of significant events in Jesus' ministry. Jerusalem is where the Passover festival is celebrated, and it is also the city where Jesus will be crucified. This setting underscores the fulfillment of Old Testament prophecies concerning the Messiah's suffering and death.

a man carrying a jug of water will meet you.
In the cultural context of first-century Jerusalem, it was uncommon for men to carry water; this task was typically done by women. Therefore, a man carrying a jug of water would stand out, making him an easily identifiable sign for the disciples. This detail demonstrates Jesus' precise knowledge of events and people, reinforcing His divine insight.

Follow him to the house he enters,
The instruction to follow the man to a specific house suggests a prearranged plan, possibly indicating that Jesus had made prior arrangements for the Passover meal. This reflects the theme of divine providence and preparation. The house likely belonged to a follower of Jesus, providing a safe and private location for the Last Supper, which holds deep theological significance as the institution of the Lord's Supper.

What Does Luke 22:10 Mean
He answered

• Jesus replies with calm certainty, demonstrating His complete control of forthcoming events (John 13:19; Matthew 20:17-19).

• His words reassure the disciples that nothing about the Passover arrangements is random; every detail is already in His hands (Luke 12:6-7).

When you enter the city

• “The city” points to Jerusalem, the prophetic center of God’s redemptive plan (Luke 9:51; Psalm 122:3-4).

• Timing matters: Jesus directs them to act that very day, underlining God’s precise scheduling (Galatians 4:4; Ecclesiastes 3:1).

• Obedience in small steps—simply entering as instructed—opens the way for larger revelations (John 2:5).

a man carrying a jug of water will meet you

• An unexpected sign: water jars were ordinarily borne by women, so this man would stand out immediately (Genesis 24:15-20).

• The sign mirrors earlier divine confirmations, such as Samuel telling Saul he would meet specific people on the road (1 Samuel 10:2-7).

• Jesus’ foreknowledge strengthens faith; He speaks details no mere human could predict (John 1:48-50).

Follow him

• The directive moves from observation to action—faith must express itself in obedience (James 2:17; John 14:15).

• “Follow” evokes lifelong discipleship; the pattern is the same whether seeking an upper room or carrying a cross (Matthew 4:19; Luke 9:23).

• Trusting guidance we don’t fully understand prepares us for deeper fellowship with Christ (Proverbs 3:5-6).

to the house he enters

• Jesus has already secured a place for the Passover; the disciples simply walk into His provision (Luke 22:11-13).

• The scene anticipates His promise to prepare an eternal dwelling for His people (John 14:2-3).

• The house becomes the setting for the Last Supper, covenant renewal, and servant leadership (1 Corinthians 11:23-26; John 13:3-5).

summary

Luke 22:10 shows Jesus orchestrating every moment leading to the cross. He offers precise instructions, an unmistakable sign, and a prepared place, calling His followers to simple, trusting obedience. As we heed His voice in the ordinary—entering cities, spotting water jars, following strangers—we discover that He has already arranged the extraordinary, inviting us into deeper communion and confident faith.

(10) A man . . . bearing a pitcher of water.--The signal is one of the details common to St. Mark and St. Luke. (See Note on Mark 14:13.)

Verse 10. - And he said unto them, Behold, when ye are entered into the city, there shall a man meet you. The name of the man who should meet them was omitted - purposely, think Theophylact and others, lest the place of meeting should be prematurely known to Judas. Bearing a pitcher of water. This would be an unusual sight in an Oriental city, where the water is drawn by women. It is probable that the "man" whom the Master foretold John and Peter would meet, was the master of the house, who, according to the Jewish custom on the 13th of Nisan, before the stars appeared in the heavens, had himself to go to the public fountain to draw the water with which the unleavened bread for the Passover Feast was kneaded.
