Jesus looked up and saw the rich putting their gifts into the offering box.1Ἀναβλέψας δὲ εἶδεν τοὺς βάλλοντας εἰς τὸ γαζοφυλάκιον τὰ δῶρα αὐτῶν πλουσίους
He also saw a poor widow put in two small copper coins.2εἶδεν δέ τινα χήραν πενιχρὰν βάλλουσαν ἐκεῖ λεπτὰ δύο
He said, "I tell you the truth, this poor widow has put in more than all of them.3Καὶ εἶπεν Ἀληθῶς λέγω ὑμῖν ὅτι χήρα αὕτη «ἡ πτωχὴ» πλεῖον πάντων ἔβαλεν
For they all offered their gifts out of their wealth. But she, out of her poverty, put in everything she had to live on." 4πάντες γὰρ οὗτοι ἐκ τοῦ περισσεύοντος αὐτοῖς ἔβαλον εἰς τὰ δῶρα αὕτη δὲ ἐκ τοῦ ὑστερήματος αὐτῆς πάντα τὸν βίον ὃν εἶχεν ἔβαλεν
Now while some were speaking about the temple, how it was adorned with beautiful stones and offerings, Jesus said,5Καί τινων λεγόντων περὶ τοῦ ἱεροῦ ὅτι λίθοις καλοῖς καὶ ἀναθήμασιν κεκόσμηται εἶπεν
"As for these things that you are gazing at, the days will come when not one stone will be left on another. All will be torn down!"6Ταῦτα θεωρεῖτε ἐλεύσονται ἡμέραι ἐν αἷς οὐκ ἀφεθήσεται λίθος ἐπὶ λίθῳ (ὧδε) ὃς οὐ καταλυθήσεται
So they asked him, "Teacher, when will these things happen? And what will be the sign that these things are about to take place?"7Ἐπηρώτησαν δὲ αὐτὸν λέγοντες Διδάσκαλε πότε οὖν ταῦτα ἔσται καὶ τί τὸ σημεῖον ὅταν μέλλῃ ταῦτα γίνεσθαι
He said, "Watch out that you are not misled. For many will come in my name, saying, 'I am he,' and, 'The time is near.' Do not follow them!8 δὲ εἶπεν Βλέπετε μὴ πλανηθῆτε πολλοὶ γὰρ ἐλεύσονται ἐπὶ τῷ ὀνόματί μου λέγοντες Ἐγώ εἰμι καί καιρὸς ἤγγικεν μὴ πορευθῆτε ὀπίσω αὐτῶν
And when you hear of wars and rebellions, do not be afraid. For these things must happen first, but the end will not come at once." 9ὅταν δὲ ἀκούσητε πολέμους καὶ ἀκαταστασίας μὴ πτοηθῆτε δεῖ γὰρ ταῦτα γενέσθαι πρῶτον ἀλλ’ οὐκ εὐθέως τὸ τέλος
Then he said to them, "Nation will rise up in arms against nation, and kingdom against kingdom.10Τότε ἔλεγεν αὐτοῖς Ἐγερθήσεται ἔθνος ἐπ’ ἔθνος καὶ βασιλεία ἐπὶ βασιλείαν
There will be great earthquakes, and famines and plagues in various places, and there will be terrifying sights and great signs from heaven.11σεισμοί τε μεγάλοι καὶ κατὰ τόπους λιμοὶ* καὶ λοιμοὶ* ἔσονται φόβητρά τε καὶ «ἀπ’ οὐρανοῦ» σημεῖα μεγάλα ἔσται
But before all this, they will seize you and persecute you, handing you over to the synagogues and prisons. You will be brought before kings and governors because of my name.12Πρὸ δὲ τούτων πάντων ἐπιβαλοῦσιν ἐφ’ ὑμᾶς τὰς χεῖρας αὐτῶν καὶ διώξουσιν παραδιδόντες εἰς τὰς συναγωγὰς καὶ φυλακάς ἀπαγομένους ἐπὶ βασιλεῖς καὶ ἡγεμόνας ἕνεκεν τοῦ ὀνόματός μου
This will be a time for you to serve as witnesses.13ἀποβήσεται ὑμῖν εἰς μαρτύριον
Therefore be resolved not to rehearse ahead of time how to make your defense.14θέτε οὖν ἐν ταῖς καρδίαις ὑμῶν μὴ προμελετᾶν ἀπολογηθῆναι
For I will give you the words along with the wisdom that none of your adversaries will be able to withstand or contradict.15ἐγὼ γὰρ δώσω ὑμῖν στόμα καὶ σοφίαν οὐ δυνήσονται ἀντιστῆναι ἀντειπεῖν ἅπαντες οἱ ἀντικείμενοι ὑμῖν
You will be betrayed even by parents, brothers, relatives, and friends, and they will have some of you put to death.16Παραδοθήσεσθε δὲ καὶ ὑπὸ γονέων καὶ ἀδελφῶν καὶ συγγενῶν καὶ φίλων καὶ θανατώσουσιν ἐξ ὑμῶν
You will be hated by everyone because of my name.17καὶ ἔσεσθε μισούμενοι ὑπὸ πάντων διὰ τὸ ὄνομά μου
Yet not a hair of your head will perish.18καὶ θρὶξ ἐκ τῆς κεφαλῆς ὑμῶν οὐ μὴ ἀπόληται
By your endurance you will gain your lives. 19ἐν τῇ ὑπομονῇ ὑμῶν κτήσασθε* τὰς ψυχὰς ὑμῶν
"But when you see Jerusalem surrounded by armies, then know that its desolation has come near.20Ὅταν δὲ ἴδητε κυκλουμένην ὑπὸ στρατοπέδων Ἰερουσαλήμ τότε γνῶτε ὅτι ἤγγικεν ἐρήμωσις αὐτῆς
Then those who are in Judea must flee to the mountains. Those who are inside the city must depart. Those who are out in the country must not enter it,21τότε οἱ ἐν τῇ Ἰουδαίᾳ φευγέτωσαν εἰς τὰ ὄρη καὶ οἱ ἐν μέσῳ αὐτῆς ἐκχωρείτωσαν καὶ οἱ ἐν ταῖς χώραις μὴ εἰσερχέσθωσαν εἰς αὐτήν
because these are days of vengeance, to fulfill all that is written.22ὅτι ἡμέραι ἐκδικήσεως αὗταί εἰσιν τοῦ πλησθῆναι πάντα τὰ γεγραμμένα
Woe to those who are pregnant and to those who are nursing their babies in those days! For there will be great distress on the earth and wrath against this people.23Οὐαὶ ταῖς ἐν γαστρὶ ἐχούσαις καὶ ταῖς θηλαζούσαις ἐν ἐκείναις ταῖς ἡμέραις ἔσται γὰρ ἀνάγκη μεγάλη ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς καὶ ὀργὴ τῷ λαῷ τούτῳ
They will fall by the edge of the sword and be led away as captives among all nations. Jerusalem will be trampled down by the Gentiles until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled.
"And there will be signs in the sun and moon and stars, and on the earth nations will be in distress, anxious over the roaring of the sea and the surging waves.25Καὶ ἔσονται σημεῖα ἐν ἡλίῳ καὶ σελήνῃ καὶ ἄστροις καὶ ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς συνοχὴ ἐθνῶν ἐν ἀπορίᾳ ἤχους θαλάσσης καὶ σάλου
People will be fainting from fear and from the expectation of what is coming on the world, for the powers of the heavens will be shaken.26ἀποψυχόντων ἀνθρώπων ἀπὸ φόβου καὶ προσδοκίας τῶν ἐπερχομένων τῇ οἰκουμένῃ αἱ γὰρ δυνάμεις τῶν οὐρανῶν σαλευθήσονται
Then they will see the Son of Man arriving in a cloud with power and great glory.27καὶ τότε ὄψονται τὸν Υἱὸν τοῦ ἀνθρώπου ἐρχόμενον ἐν νεφέλῃ μετὰ δυνάμεως καὶ δόξης πολλῆς
But when these things begin to happen, stand up and raise your heads, because your redemption is drawing near." 28ἀρχομένων δὲ τούτων γίνεσθαι ἀνακύψατε καὶ ἐπάρατε τὰς κεφαλὰς ὑμῶν διότι ἐγγίζει ἀπολύτρωσις ὑμῶν
Then he told them a parable: "Look at the fig tree and all the other trees.29Καὶ εἶπεν παραβολὴν αὐτοῖς Ἴδετε τὴν συκῆν καὶ πάντα τὰ δένδρα
When they sprout leaves, you see for yourselves and know that summer is now near.30ὅταν προβάλωσιν ἤδη βλέποντες ἀφ’ ἑαυτῶν γινώσκετε ὅτι ἤδη ἐγγὺς τὸ θέρος ἐστίν
So also you, when you see these things happening, know that the kingdom of God is near.31οὕτως καὶ ὑμεῖς ὅταν ἴδητε ταῦτα γινόμενα γινώσκετε ὅτι ἐγγύς ἐστιν βασιλεία τοῦ Θεοῦ
I tell you the truth, this generation will not pass away until all these things take place.32ἀμὴν λέγω ὑμῖν ὅτι οὐ μὴ παρέλθῃ γενεὰ αὕτη ἕως ἂν πάντα γένηται
Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away. 33 οὐρανὸς καὶ γῆ παρελεύσονται οἱ δὲ λόγοι μου οὐ μὴ παρελεύσονται
"But be on your guard so that your hearts are not weighed down with dissipation and drunkenness and the worries of this life, and that day close down upon you suddenly like a trap.34Προσέχετε δὲ ἑαυτοῖς μή‿ ποτε βαρηθῶσιν ὑμῶν αἱ καρδίαι ἐν κραιπάλῃ καὶ μέθῃ καὶ μερίμναις βιωτικαῖς καὶ ἐπιστῇ ἐφ’ ὑμᾶς αἰφνίδιος ἡμέρα ἐκείνη ὡς παγίς
For it will overtake all who live on the face of the whole earth.35ἐπεισελεύσεται γὰρ ἐπὶ πάντας τοὺς καθημένους ἐπὶ πρόσωπον πάσης τῆς γῆς
But stay alert at all times, praying that you may have strength to escape all these things that must happen, and to stand before the Son of Man." 36ἀγρυπνεῖτε δὲ ἐν παντὶ καιρῷ δεόμενοι ἵνα κατισχύσητε ἐκφυγεῖν ταῦτα πάντα τὰ μέλλοντα γίνεσθαι καὶ σταθῆναι ἔμπροσθεν τοῦ Υἱοῦ τοῦ ἀνθρώπου
So every day Jesus was teaching in the temple courts, but at night he went and stayed on the Mount of Olives.37Ἦν δὲ τὰς ἡμέρας ἐν τῷ ἱερῷ διδάσκων τὰς δὲ νύκτας ἐξερχόμενος ηὐλίζετο εἰς τὸ ὄρος τὸ καλούμενον Ἐλαιῶν
And all the people came to him early in the morning to listen to him in the temple courts. 38καὶ πᾶς λαὸς ὤρθριζεν πρὸς αὐτὸν ἐν τῷ ἱερῷ ἀκούειν αὐτοῦ
