There will be great earthquakes
Earthquakes are often seen in the Bible as manifestations of God's power and judgment. In the Old Testament, earthquakes accompanied significant events, such as the giving of the Law at Mount Sinai (Exodus 19:18) and the resurrection of Jesus (Matthew 28:2). The mention of "great earthquakes" here suggests a divine intervention or a sign of the end times, aligning with prophetic literature that describes natural upheavals as precursors to the Day of the Lord (Isaiah 29:6, Revelation 6:12).

famines
Famines in biblical times were often seen as judgments from God or as tests of faith. They are mentioned throughout the Bible, such as during the time of Joseph in Egypt (Genesis 41) and in the days of Elijah (1 Kings 17). Famines can also symbolize spiritual hunger and a lack of God's word (Amos 8:11). In the context of end times, famines are part of the birth pains leading up to the return of Christ (Matthew 24:7).

and pestilences in various places
Pestilences, or widespread diseases, are often associated with divine judgment in the Bible. The plagues of Egypt (Exodus 7-11) are a prime example of pestilences used by God to demonstrate His power and deliver His people. In the eschatological context, pestilences are part of the signs that precede the end times, indicating a world in turmoil and distress (Revelation 6:8).

along with fearful sights
Fearful sights can refer to terrifying events or phenomena that cause dread and awe. These could include natural disasters, wars, or other catastrophic events that shake the foundations of human security. Such sights are often seen as warnings or calls to repentance, urging people to turn back to God in the face of impending judgment (Joel 2:30-31).

and great signs from heaven
Great signs from heaven are often associated with celestial phenomena that signal divine intervention or the fulfillment of prophecy. In the Bible, signs from heaven include the star of Bethlehem (Matthew 2:2) and the darkening of the sun at Jesus' crucifixion (Luke 23:44-45). In eschatological terms, these signs are part of the cosmic disturbances that herald the coming of the Son of Man (Luke 21:25-27, Revelation 12:1).

Persons / Places / Events
1. Jesus Christ
The speaker of this prophecy, Jesus is addressing His disciples about the signs of the end times.

2. Disciples
The immediate audience of Jesus' teaching, representing all believers who seek to understand the signs of the times.

3. Earthquakes, Famines, and Pestilences
Natural and societal events that Jesus predicts will occur as signs of the end times.

4. Fearful Sights and Great Signs from Heaven
Supernatural phenomena that will accompany the end times, indicating divine intervention and the fulfillment of prophecy.
Teaching Points
Understanding Prophecy
Jesus' words in Luke 21:11 remind us of the importance of understanding biblical prophecy. As believers, we should study these signs to be prepared and not be led astray by false teachings.

Trust in God's Sovereignty
Despite the chaos described, we are called to trust in God's sovereign plan. These events are not random but are part of God's divine timeline leading to the ultimate redemption of His people.

Call to Readiness
The signs mentioned are a call to spiritual readiness. We should live each day with an eternal perspective, prioritizing our relationship with Christ and sharing the Gospel with urgency.

Hope Amidst Fear
While the events described can be frightening, believers have hope in Christ. Our focus should be on His promises and the assurance of His return, which brings ultimate peace and restoration.

Community Support
In times of crisis, the church should be a beacon of hope and support. We are called to care for one another, providing physical and spiritual aid to those affected by these events.

What Does Luke 21:11 Mean
There will be great earthquakes

Luke places seismic upheavals first, underscoring their power to shake human confidence. Scripture presents literal quakes as:

• Divine wake-up calls (Exodus 19:18; 1 Kings 19:11-12)

• Previews of coming judgment (Revelation 6:12; 16:18)

• Signs tied to Christ’s return (Matthew 24:7; Mark 13:8)

Just as the earth quaked at Jesus’ death and resurrection (Matthew 27:51; 28:2), future quakes will announce that history is moving toward its God-ordained climax.

famines

Shortages of food often follow war, drought, or economic collapse, and Scripture treats them as literal judgments designed to turn people back to the Lord (Leviticus 26:18-20; Deuteronomy 28:23-24). New-Testament believers saw a preview when Agabus foretold a famine in Claudius’ reign (Acts 11:28). Revelation pictures end-time scarcity so severe that a day’s wages buy only a loaf of bread (Revelation 6:5-6).

pestilences in various places

Disease outbreaks—whether plague, virus, or something unforeseen—fit the pattern of divine warnings (Deuteronomy 28:21-22; Ezekiel 14:19). Jesus said they would appear “in various places,” showing no region is immune. Revelation’s pale horse riders usher in death by sword, famine, and “plague” (Revelation 6:8), matching Luke’s order and confirming a literal sequence.

fearful sights

These are terrifying phenomena that grip hearts with dread:

• Supernatural manifestations like those at Sinai (Exodus 19:16)

• Angelic appearances that leave observers trembling (Luke 2:9; Acts 12:7)

• Sudden events that paralyze society with fear (Isaiah 2:19)

God allows such sights to strip away false security and spotlight the need for repentance.

great signs from heaven

Cosmic disturbances crown the list. Scripture envisions:

• Sun and moon darkened (Joel 2:30-31; Matthew 24:29)

• Meteor-like showers, blood-red moons, and shifting stars (Revelation 6:13-14)

• A spectacular sign heralding the Son of Man (Matthew 24:30)

These signs are not mere symbols; they are visible markers that the Creator is stepping back into His creation in judgment and redemption.

summary

Luke 21:11 stacks a literal progression of end-time warnings—earthquakes, famines, pestilences, fearful sights, and heavenly signs. Each shakes a different foundation: land, food supply, health, emotional stability, and the very skies. Far from random disasters, they are coordinated signals that God’s prophetic timetable is advancing and that the world must turn to Christ before His return.

(11) Famines and pestilences.--The mention of the latter is, as far as the best MSS. are concerned, a feature peculiar to St. Luke. Others, however, give the same combination in Matthew 24:7. The Greek nouns are all but identical in sound (limos = famine, and loimos = pestilence), and there is accordingly a kind of rhythmical emphasis of sound which cannot be reproduced in English.

Fearful sights.--The Greek word, literally things of terror, is peculiar to St. Luke. He omits here "the beginning of troubles." or "travail-pangs," which we find in St. Matthew and St. Mark.

Verse 11. - Great earthquakes. These seem to have been very frequent during the period; we hear of them in Palestine, Italy, Greece, Asia Minor, Crete, Syria. Famines and pestilences. The Jewish and pagan historians of this time - Josephus, Suetonius, Taecitus, and others - enumerate several memorable instances of these scourges in this eventful time. Fearful sights and great signs. Among the former may be especially enumerated the foul and terrible scenes connected with the proceedings of the Zealots (see Josephus,, Bell. Jud.,' 4:03. § 7; v. 6. § 1, etc.). Among the great signs "would be the rumor of monstrous births; the cry, 'Woe! woe!' for seven and a half years of the peasant Jesus, son of Hanan; the voice and sound of departing guardian-angels; and the sudden opening of the vast brazen temple gate which required twenty men to move it" (Farrar).
