Psalms 44
Berean Study Bible

Redeem Us, O God

For the choirmaster.

The psalm was prepared for use in Israel’s gathered worship under the direction of the temple’s musical leader.

1Ch 25:1 Additionally, David and the commanders of the army…

A Maskil of the sons of Korah.

The sons of Korah were Levitical musicians whose family continued in temple service despite Korah’s earlier rebellion. Their involvement reflects the established role of trained singers in Israel’s worship.

Mic 7:14 Shepherd with Your staff Your people, the flock…

With Your hand You drove out the nations

God gave Israel victory over the Canaanite peoples, fulfilling His promise to give Abraham’s descendants the land. Israel’s possession of Canaan rested not on military strength alone but on the Lord’s power and judgment against nations whose sin had reached its fullness.

and planted our fathers there;

Having removed the former inhabitants, God established Israel in the land as His covenant people. The land became their inheritance, a place where the descendants of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob could live under God’s law and worship Him.

Exo 15:17 You will bring them in and plant them on the mountain…
2Sa 7:10 And I will provide a place for My people Israel…
Psa 80:8-9 You uprooted a vine from Egypt; You drove out the nations…

You crushed the peoples

The victories over Israel’s enemies were decisive because the Lord fought for His people. The nations opposing Israel were brought down through God’s judgment, demonstrating His rule over kings, armies, and lands.

Psa 18:37-38 I pursued my enemies and overtook them;…

and cast them out.

The Canaanites were dispossessed so that Israel could receive the inheritance God had appointed for them. Their removal also warned Israel that continued possession of the land depended on faithfulness to the Lord.

Deu 9:4-5 When the LORD your God has driven them out before you,…

For it was not by their sword that they took the land;

Israel’s possession of Canaan came through God’s fulfillment of His covenant promise, not through superior weapons or military skill. At Jericho and throughout the conquest, the Lord gave victory in ways that made His hand unmistakable.

Deu 7:7-8 The LORD did not set His affection on you and choose you…
Psa 5:12 For surely You, O LORD, bless the righteous;…

You are my King, O God,

Israel confessed that the Lord alone held supreme authority over the nation. Though Israel later had human rulers, they were accountable to God, the true King. Israel’s demand for a king in Samuel’s day revealed a rejection of God’s direct rule. The words also anticipate Christ, the promised Davidic King who reigns over all kings.

Psa 74:12 Yet God is my King from ancient times…
Psa 47:7 For God is King of all the earth; sing to Him…

who ordains victories for Jacob.

Jacob represents the nation descended from the patriarch. Israel’s deliverance and military success depended on God’s purpose rather than human strength, numbers, or strategy. From the conquest of Canaan to later battles against Israel’s enemies, God gave victory when His people relied on Him. These deliverances point forward to Christ’s decisive victory over sin, death, and Satan.

Gen 32:28 Then the man said, “Your name will no longer be Jacob,…
Deu 1:30 The LORD your God, who goes before you, will fight for you,…
Jos 23:10 One of you can put a thousand to flight,…

Through You we repel our foes;

Israel’s victories were not credited to military strength or human strategy, but to the Lord’s intervention. In the battles for the land, God gave His people success against enemies beyond their natural ability to defeat. He stood as their protector and deliverer, fulfilling His covenant purposes.

Deu 20:4 For the LORD your God goes with you to fight for you…
Jos 23:10 One of you can put a thousand to flight,…
Psa 18:39 You have armed me with strength for battle…

through Your name we trample our enemies.

God’s name represents His authority, faithfulness, and power. Israel overcame because the Lord acted for His people and upheld His promises. The image of trampling enemies portrays decisive victory over those who opposed God’s rule, ultimately anticipating the defeat of sin, Satan, and every enemy under Christ’s authority.

Psa 118:10-12 All the nations surrounded me, but in the name of the LORD…
1Sa 17:45-47 But David said to the Philistine, “You come against me…
Psa 60:12 With God we will perform with valor, and He will…

For I do not trust in my bow,

Israel’s weapons and military skill could not secure victory apart from God’s help. Though the bow was a standard weapon of war, the psalmist refuses to credit human strength for the nation’s deliverance.

Hos 1:7 Yet I will have compassion on the house of Judah,…
Isa 31:1 Woe to those who go down to Egypt for help…
Psa 20:7 Some trust in chariots and others in horses…

nor does my sword save me.

The sword represented personal and national defense, yet Israel’s history showed that God could save His people apart from superior force. David’s victory over Goliath illustrated that the outcome of battle belongs to the Lord, not to the strength of the warrior or his weapons.

Psa 33:16-17 No king is saved by his vast army; no warrior…
2Ch 32:8 With him is only the arm of flesh, but with us is the LORD…
1Sa 17:47 And all those assembled here will know that it is not…

For You save us from our enemies;

Israel’s survival depended on God’s intervention rather than military strength. Throughout its history, He delivered His people from hostile nations and preserved them according to His covenant promises. Such rescues also point beyond physical danger to God’s greater work of saving His people from sin and death through Christ.

Luk 1:71 salvation from our enemies and from the hand…
Psa 18:48-49 who delivers me from my enemies. You exalt me above my foes;…
2Sa 22:49 who frees me from my enemies. You exalt me above my foes;…

You put those who hate us to shame.

God vindicates those who belong to Him by overthrowing those who oppose His purposes. In the ancient world, defeat brought public disgrace; Israel’s enemies were shamed when their power proved helpless before the Lord. Their judgment anticipates the final defeat of all rebellion against God.

Psa 35:4 May those who seek my life be disgraced and put to shame;…
Psa 70:2-3 May those who seek my life be ashamed and confounded;…
Psa 83:16-18 Cover their faces with shame, that they may seek Your name,…

In God we have boasted all day long,

Israel remembered that its survival and victories came from the Lord rather than military strength or human skill. From the exodus to the conquest of Canaan, God had acted for His covenant people and given them reason to glory in Him alone.

Psa 20:7 Some trust in chariots and others in horses…
Psa 34:2 My soul boasts in the LORD; let the oppressed…
2Co 10:17 Rather, “Let him who boasts boast in the Lord.”

and Your name we will praise forever.

God’s name represents His revealed character, power, and faithfulness. Though the nation faced present distress, the psalmist affirmed that the Lord remained worthy of continual praise and that His covenant purposes would endure.

Psa 113:1-3 Hallelujah! Give praise, O servants of the LORD…
Psa 145:1-2 A Psalm of praise. Of David. I will exalt You,…
Psa 79:13 Then we Your people, the sheep of Your pasture…

Selah

The musical or liturgical pause calls for reflection on Israel’s dependence upon God and the lasting praise due to Him.

Hab 2:20 But the LORD is in His holy temple; let all the earth…
Psa 46:10 Be still and know that I am God; I will be exalted…
Psa 62:5 Rest in God alone, O my soul, for my hope comes from Him.

But You have rejected and humbled us;

Israel’s defeat brought the painful sense that God had withdrawn His favor. Such humiliation often followed the nation’s disobedience to the covenant, exposing the consequences of idolatry and rebellion. Yet the lament appeals to the God who had formerly delivered His people, acknowledging that their condition lay under His sovereign hand.

Psa 60:1 You have rejected us, O God; You have broken us;…
Psa 89:38-39 Now, however, You have spurned and rejected him;…
Lam 2:1 How the Lord has covered the Daughter of Zion…

You no longer go forth with our armies.

Israel’s victories depended on the Lord’s presence, not military strength or numbers. When He withheld that help, their armies were defeated and their enemies prevailed. The psalmist grieves not merely over lost battles but over the apparent absence of God from the nation’s defense.

2Sa 5:24 As soon as you hear the sound of marching…
Deu 20:4 For the LORD your God goes with you to fight for you…
Jos 23:10 One of you can put a thousand to flight,…

You have made us retreat from the foe,

Israel’s battlefield defeat is acknowledged as occurring under God’s sovereign hand. Under the covenant, military reversals could expose the nation’s unfaithfulness and bring the discipline God had warned of. Such losses marked periods when Israel was overcome by hostile powers and driven back from land or position once held securely.

Jos 7:8 O Lord, what can I say, now that Israel has turned…
Deu 28:25 The LORD will cause you to be defeated before your enemies.…
Lev 26:17 Those who hate you will rule over you, and you will flee…

and those who hate us have plundered us.

Defeat left Israel’s towns, fields, livestock, and possessions vulnerable to enemy seizure. Surrounding nations often treated Israel with deep hostility, and plunder added public humiliation to military loss. The psalm records the people’s distress while seeking God’s intervention and restoration.

Isa 42:24 Who gave Jacob up for spoil, and Israel to the plunderers?…
Psa 89:41 All who pass by plunder him; he has become…
Deu 28:33 A people you do not know will eat the produce of your land…

You have given us up as sheep to be devoured;

Israel laments being left exposed to enemies like defenseless sheep without a shepherd’s protection. The image reflects the national disasters that followed covenant unfaithfulness, when invading powers defeated the people and carried many away.

Jer 50:17 Israel is a scattered flock, chased away by lions.…
Ezk 34:5 They were scattered for lack of a shepherd,…
Jer 12:3 But You know me, O LORD; You see me and test my heart…

You have scattered us among the nations.

The Assyrian and Babylonian exiles dispersed Israelites throughout foreign lands, separating families from their homeland, worship, and national life. Yet the scattering did not cancel God’s covenant purposes; the prophets later promised that He would gather His people and restore them.

Ezk 11:16 Therefore declare that this is what the Lord GOD says:…
Jer 9:16 I will scatter them among the nations…
Deu 28:64 Then the LORD will scatter you among all the nations,…

You sell Your people for nothing;

Israel’s defeats made it appear that God had surrendered His covenant people to their enemies without restraint. The psalmist speaks from the anguish of national humiliation, knowing that Israel belonged to the Lord and yet had been exposed to plunder, captivity, and reproach.

Isa 52:3 For this is what the LORD says: “You were sold for nothing,…
Deu 32:30 How could one man pursue a thousand, or two…
Jdg 2:14 Then the anger of the LORD burned against Israel,…

no profit do You gain from their sale.

Unlike an earthly seller, God gained no material advantage from Israel’s suffering. The complaint underscores the apparent purposelessness of their defeat while appealing to God’s covenant faithfulness. Though the psalm does not deny Israel’s sins, it pleads for the Lord to act for His name and restore His people.

Isa 45:13 I will raise up Cyrus in righteousness…
Jer 15:13 Your wealth and your treasures I will give up as plunder,…
Amo 2:6 This is what the LORD says: “For three transgressions…

You have made us a reproach to our neighbors,

Israel’s defeat had brought public shame among the surrounding nations. Though chosen to represent the Lord, the people’s disobedience had led to judgment, allowing their enemies to question their standing and ridicule their God. Such humiliation was especially severe in a culture where a nation’s honor was closely tied to the strength of its god.

Psa 79:4 We have become a reproach to our neighbors,…
Psa 80:6 You make us contend with our neighbors; our enemies mock us.
Jer 24:9 I will make them a horror and an offense…

a mockery and derision to those around us.

Neighboring peoples responded to Israel’s suffering with mockery and derision, scorn and ridicule, as they did when Jerusalem fell and its people were carried into exile. The psalmist grieves not only military loss but the dishonor brought upon God’s covenant people. Their condition exposed the painful contrast between the Lord’s promises and their present affliction.

Psa 22:7 All who see me mock me; they sneer and shake their heads:
Psa 31:11 Among all my enemies I am a disgrace…
Lam 3:14 I am a laughingstock to all my people; they mock me in song…

You have made us a byword among the nations,

Israel’s defeat and distress had become publicly known, turning the covenant people into a byword—an example of misfortune and disgrace—before surrounding nations. Their former strength and honor under faithful kings stood in sharp contrast to their present humiliation, which followed generations of unfaithfulness and God’s disciplinary judgment.

Deu 28:37 You will become an object of horror, scorn, and ridicule…
1Ki 9:7 then I will cut off Israel from the land…
Jer 24:9 I will make them a horror and an offense…

a laughingstock among the peoples.

The nations did not merely observe Israel’s suffering; they mocked it. In a culture where national honor was closely tied to military strength, security, and the favor of one’s god, Israel’s condition brought deep shame. Yet the psalm preserves the people’s appeal to the Lord, recognizing that their disgrace was not beyond His knowledge or power to reverse.

Lam 3:14 I am a laughingstock to all my people; they mock me in song…
Jer 20:7 You have deceived me, O LORD, and I was deceived.…
Psa 79:4 We have become a reproach to our neighbors,…

All day long my disgrace is before me,

Israel’s defeat had become an unending public humiliation. Though the people remembered God’s former victories, their present suffering left them exposed before hostile nations and burdened by the sense that He had withdrawn His favor.

Lam 3:14 I am a laughingstock to all my people; they mock me in song…
Jer 20:7 You have deceived me, O LORD, and I was deceived.…
Psa 42:10 Like the crushing of my bones, my enemies taunt me……

and shame has covered my face,

The nation’s dishonor was deeply personal, as though shame had visibly covered the psalmist’s face. Their condition included not only military loss but reproach from enemies, producing grief and confusion as they sought God’s help.

Psa 69:7 For I have endured scorn for Your sake,……
Isa 50:6 I offered My back to those who struck Me…
Psa 83:16 Cover their faces with shame, that they may seek Your name,…

at the voice of the scorner and reviler,

Israel endured open ridicule from those who despised the Lord and His people. Such contempt added humiliation to military defeat and national distress, as enemies mocked Israel’s covenant God as powerless to save.

Psa 69:9 because zeal for Your house has consumed me,…
Psa 22:7 All who see me mock me; they sneer and shake their heads:
Mat 27:39 And those who passed by heaped abuse on Him,…

because of the enemy,

The opposition came from hostile peoples who sought Israel’s downfall and treated her suffering as proof that the Lord had abandoned His inheritance. Their hostility was directed not only against the nation but against the God who had chosen and defended it.

Psa 55:3 at the voice of the enemy, at the pressure of the…
Psa 13:2 How long must I wrestle in my soul, with sorrow in my heart…
Psa 42:10 Like the crushing of my bones, my enemies taunt me……

bent on revenge.

Their hatred was deliberate and relentless, pursuing further injury rather than peace. The psalmist brings this injustice before God, trusting Him to judge those who exalt themselves through cruelty and reproach.

Psa 8:2 From the mouths of children and infants, You have ordained…
Psa 94:1-2 O LORD, God of vengeance, O God of vengeance, shine forth.…
Deu 32:35 Vengeance is Mine; I will repay. In due time…

All this has come upon us,

Israel had endured severe national disaster, including defeat, loss, and humiliation before its enemies. The psalmist openly acknowledges the reality of their suffering rather than denying it or minimizing God’s sovereign rule over it.

Dan 9:13 Just as it is written in the Law of Moses,…
Psa 60:1-3 You have rejected us, O God; You have broken us;…
Psa 66:10-12 For You, O God, have tested us; You have refined us…

though we have not forgotten You

In the midst of affliction, the people maintain that they have not abandoned the Lord for idols or ceased to recognize Him as their God. Their distress is heightened by the conviction that their calamity cannot be explained by open apostasy.

Psa 119:176 I have strayed like a lost sheep; seek Your servant…
Psa 119:93 I will never forget Your precepts, for by them…
Psa 119:16 I will delight in Your statutes; I will not…

or betrayed Your covenant.

They insist that they have not deliberately turned from the covenant obligations God gave Israel through Moses. Their plea raises the difficult reality of suffering among those who seek to remain faithful to God, anticipating Christ, who suffered though He was without sin.

Hos 6:7 But they, like Adam, have transgressed the covenant;…
Jer 31:32 It will not be like the covenant I made with their fathers…
Deu 31:20 When I have brought them into the land that I swore to give…

Our hearts have not turned back;

The people affirm that, despite military defeat and suffering, they have not abandoned the Lord or turned to other gods. Their loyalty is presented as an inward devotion that remains firm under trial.

1Ki 8:61 So let your heart be fully devoted to the LORD our God…
2Ki 18:6 He remained faithful to the LORD and did not turn from…
Jos 23:8 Instead, you shall hold fast to the LORD your God,…

our steps have not strayed from Your path.

Their conduct, they maintain, has remained within the covenant obligations God gave Israel. The lament rests on the conviction that their present distress has come without a deliberate departure from God’s commands.

Psa 17:5 My steps have held to Your paths; my feet have not slipped.
Job 23:11 My feet have followed in His tracks; I have kept His way……
Pro 4:26-27 Make a level path for your feet, and all your ways…

But You have crushed us in the lair of jackals;

Israel describes its condition as one of utter devastation, like a land abandoned to wild scavengers. Though the people had remained mindful of God’s covenant, they had suffered defeat and humiliation, feeling as though He had handed them over to ruin.

Jer 9:11 And I will make Jerusalem a heap of rubble…
Jer 10:22 Listen! The sound of a report is coming—a great commotion…
Jer 49:33 Hazor will become a haunt for jackals, a desolation forever.…

You have covered us with deepest darkness.

Their distress seemed to shut out every sign of God’s favor. The darkness portrays national calamity and the anguish of a people who could not understand why the Lord had permitted such suffering.

Psa 107:10 Some sat in darkness and in the shadow of death,…
Job 10:21-22 before I go—never to return—to a land of darkness and gloom,…
Lam 3:2 He has driven me away and made me walk in darkness…

If we had forgotten the name of our God

Forgetting God would mean abandoning the covenant relationship He established with Israel and turning away from His revealed character and commands. Israel’s identity as a people was bound to the LORD, who had redeemed them and set them apart from the surrounding nations.

Jer 23:27 They suppose the dreams that they tell one another……
Deu 8:11 Be careful not to forget the LORD your God…
Jdg 3:7 So the Israelites did evil in the sight of the LORD;…

or spread out our hands to a foreign god,

Raising the hands in prayer or worship to another deity would be an act of idolatry and covenant unfaithfulness. Though Israel lived among peoples devoted to gods such as Baal and Asherah, they were commanded to worship the LORD alone.

Psa 81:9 There must be no strange god among you,…
Jdg 10:16 So they put away the foreign gods from among them…
Exo 20:3-5 You shall have no other gods before Me.…

would not God have discovered,

Israel appeals to the Lord as the righteous Judge who would know if the nation had turned from Him in secret. Their defeat and suffering were not presented as the result of hidden idolatry or deliberate covenant rebellion.

Pro 15:11 Sheol and Abaddon lie open before the LORD…
Ecc 12:14 For God will bring every deed into judgment,…
Job 34:21 For His eyes are on the ways of a man…

since He knows the secrets of the heart?

God sees the inward loyalties, motives, and intentions of His people. The lament rests on His perfect knowledge: He knows whether their confession of faithfulness is true, even when their circumstances suggest abandonment.

1Ch 28:9 As for you, Solomon my son, know the God of your father…
Jer 17:10 I, the LORD, search the heart; I examine the mind…
1Co 4:5 Therefore judge nothing before the appointed time;…

Yet for Your sake

Israel’s suffering came while remaining committed to the Lord, not because of abandonment or open rebellion. Their affliction exposed the cost of belonging to God in a hostile world.

Psa 69:7 For I have endured scorn for Your sake,……
Jhn 15:21 But they will treat you like this because of My name…
Mat 5:11-12 Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you…

we face death all day long;

Surrounded by powerful enemies, the nation lived under continual threat. The danger was not occasional but persistent, leaving them dependent on God for preservation.

2Co 4:11 For we who are alive are always consigned to death…
1Co 15:31 I face death every day, brothers, as surely as…
2Co 1:9 Indeed, we felt we were under the sentence of death,…

we are considered as sheep to be slaughtered.

Their enemies regarded them as helpless and disposable. Paul later applied these words to persecuted Christians, showing that suffering does not separate God’s people from His love.

Rom 8:36 As it is written: “For Your sake we face death all day long;…
Jer 12:3 But You know me, O LORD; You see me and test my heart…
Act 8:32 The eunuch was reading this passage of Scripture:…

Wake up, O Lord!

The psalmist cries out from a season of national suffering, speaking as though God has remained inactive while His people endure defeat and disgrace. God does not sleep, but the language conveys the urgency of asking Him to intervene visibly.

Psa 35:23 Awake and rise to my defense, to my cause,…
Psa 59:4 For no fault of my own, they move swiftly to attack me.…
Isa 51:9 Awake, awake, put on strength, O arm of the LORD.…

Why are You sleeping?

Israel’s distress has made God’s silence seem like absence. The question expresses grief and dependence rather than disbelief, appealing to the Lord to show that He still sees and cares for His covenant people.

Psa 78:65 Then the Lord awoke as from sleep, like a mighty warrior…
Mrk 4:38 But Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on the cushion.…
Psa 121:4 Behold, the Protector of Israel will neither slumber…

Arise!

The psalmist asks God to act against those who oppress His people and to bring the deliverance only He can provide. God’s rising portrays His decisive intervention in judgment and rescue.

Num 10:35 Whenever the ark set out, Moses would say, “Rise up, O LORD!…
Psa 3:7 Arise, O LORD! Save me, O my God! Strike all my enemies…
Psa 7:6 Arise, O LORD, in Your anger; rise up against the fury…

Do not reject us forever.

Though the people fear that their suffering may continue, they appeal to God’s enduring covenant mercy. Their hope rests in the Lord’s faithfulness, not in their own strength or innocence.

Psa 74:1 A Maskil of Asaph. Why have You rejected us forever, O God?…
Psa 77:7 Will the Lord spurn us forever and never show His favor…
Psa 79:5 How long, O LORD? Will You be angry forever?…

Why do You hide Your face

God’s hidden face describes the felt withdrawal of His favor while His people endure distress. The psalmist does not deny God’s power but pleads for Him to act openly on behalf of His covenant people.

Psa 13:1 For the choirmaster. A Psalm of David. How long, O LORD?…
Psa 27:9 Hide not Your face from me, nor turn away Your servant in anger.…
Psa 30:7 O LORD, You favored me; You made my mountain stand strong.…

and forget our affliction

Israel’s suffering appears prolonged, as though God has overlooked their misery. The lament expresses the burden of a people who remain faithful yet cannot see immediate deliverance.

Psa 9:18 For the needy will not always be forgotten;…
Isa 49:14-16 But Zion said, “The LORD has forsaken me;…
Psa 77:7-9 Will the Lord spurn us forever and never show His favor…

and oppression?

Their affliction includes harsh treatment from enemies who have humbled and scattered them. The prayer appeals to God as the righteous Judge to remember His people and bring justice against those who oppress them.

Exo 3:7-9 The LORD said, “I have indeed seen the affliction…
Psa 72:4 May he vindicate the afflicted among the people……
Psa 146:7 He executes justice for the oppressed and gives food…

For our soul has sunk to the dust;

Israel describes utter humiliation and helplessness, brought low under suffering and unable to deliver itself. The dust recalls humanity’s mortality and weakness before God, expressing grief, defeat, and dependence on His mercy.

Psa 119:25 My soul cleaves to the dust; revive me…
Psa 22:29 All the rich of the earth will feast and worship;…
Gen 3:19 By the sweat of your brow you will eat your bread,…

our bodies cling to the earth.

The people are pictured as lying prostrate, overwhelmed by affliction and near death. Their condition calls for God to act as the only One able to raise them from disgrace, restore them, and preserve His covenant people.

Dan 12:2 And many who sleep in the dust of the earth will awake…
Lam 2:10 The elders of the Daughter of Zion sit on the ground…
Psa 103:14 For He knows our frame; He is mindful that we are dust.

Rise up;

Israel calls on God to act against the enemies who have brought the nation into humiliation and suffering.

Psa 68:1 For the choirmaster. A Psalm of David. A song. God arises.…
Psa 7:6 Arise, O LORD, in Your anger; rise up against the fury…
Psa 35:23 Awake and rise to my defense, to my cause,…

be our help!

Though the people are unable to save themselves, they appeal to the Lord as their defender and deliverer.

Psa 70:5 But I am poor and needy; hurry to me, O God.…
Psa 54:4 Surely God is my helper; the Lord is my sustainer…
