Psalms 37

Delight Yourself in the LORD

Of David.

David writes as one who had seen both the violence of wicked men and the faithfulness of God through years of danger, exile, war, and kingship. His experience gave him confidence that God’s justice would prevail, even when evil appeared to succeed.

Psa 34:1 Of David, when he pretended to be insane before Abimelech,…

Do not fret over those who do evil;

The righteous are not to be consumed by anger or anxiety when evildoers seem secure. Their present freedom from consequences does not mean that God overlooks their deeds.

Pro 24:19 Do not fret over evildoers, and do not be envious…
Psa 73:3 For I envied the arrogant when I saw the prosperity…
Psa 73:17 until I entered God’s sanctuary; then I discerned their end.

do not envy those who do wrong.

The prosperity of the wicked is temporary and offers no lasting security. God’s people are called to measure life by His judgment rather than by the visible success of those who reject His ways.

Pro 24:1 Do not envy wicked men or desire their company;
Pro 23:17 Do not let your heart envy sinners, but always continue…
Pro 3:31 Do not envy a violent man or choose any of his ways;

For they wither quickly like grass

In Israel’s climate, grass could flourish briefly after seasonal rains and then dry up under the heat. The prosperity of evildoers may appear sudden and impressive, but it is temporary and subject to God’s judgment.

Psa 90:5-6 You sweep them away in their sleep; they are like…
Isa 40:7-8 The grass withers and the flowers fall when…
1Pe 1:24-25 All flesh is like grass, and all its glory…

and wilt like tender plants.

Young vegetation is especially vulnerable to scorching sun and lack of water. Likewise, the power and influence of the wicked have no lasting security, while those who trust the Lord stand on the enduring foundation of His righteousness.

Job 14:1-2 “Man, who is born of woman, is short of days…”…
Isa 64:6 Each of us has become like something unclean,…

Trust in the LORD

Israel’s security did not rest in military strength, political alliances, or favorable circumstances, but in the covenant God who had proved Himself faithful. Confidence in Him rests on His sovereign rule, righteous character, and unfailing promises.

Pro 3:5-6 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and lean not…
Isa 26:4 Trust in the LORD forever, because GOD the LORD is the Rock…
Jer 17:7 But blessed is the man who trusts in the LORD,…

and do good;

Trust in God produces obedient conduct. God’s people were to pursue justice, mercy, integrity, and righteousness according to His law, showing by their actions that their allegiance belonged to Him.

Psa 34:14 Turn away from evil and do good; seek peace and pursue it.
Luk 6:35 But love your enemies, do good to them, and lend to them…
Gal 6:10 Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good…

dwell in the land

The land of Canaan was God’s promised inheritance for Abraham’s descendants and a visible sign of His covenant faithfulness. Remaining there in obedience meant living securely under His provision rather than envying or imitating the wicked.

Deu 30:20 that you may love the LORD your God, obey Him…
Lev 26:5 Your threshing will continue until the grape harvest,…

and cultivate faithfulness.

Like a farmer tending a field, the righteous were to give sustained attention to faithful living. Steadfast obedience, reliability, and devotion to the LORD marked those who depended on Him.

Pro 28:20 A faithful man will abound with blessings…
1Co 4:2 Now it is required of stewards that they be found faithful.
Rev 2:10 Do not fear what you are about to suffer.…

Delight yourself in the LORD,

David calls God’s people to find their deepest joy and satisfaction in the Lord rather than in wealth, success, or the apparent prosperity of the wicked. Such delight includes willing obedience, trust, and a heart shaped by God’s will.

Job 22:26 Surely then you will delight in the Almighty.…
Isa 58:14 then you will delight yourself in the LORD,…
Psa 1:2 But his delight is in the Law of the LORD, and on His law…

and He will give you the desires of your heart.

As the heart is directed toward the Lord, its desires increasingly reflect His purposes. God faithfully provides what is good for His people according to His wisdom and timing.

Psa 145:19 He fulfills the desires of those who fear Him;…
Pro 10:24 What the wicked man dreads will overtake him…
Jhn 15:7 If you remain in Me and My words remain in you,…

Commit your way to the LORD;

Place the direction, burdens, and outcome of life before the Lord, yielding personal plans to His wisdom and authority. David calls God’s people to live with confidence that the Lord governs their path and remains faithful in every circumstance.

Pro 16:3 Commit your works to the LORD and your plans…
Psa 55:22 Cast your burden upon the LORD and He will sustain you;…
1Pe 5:7 Cast all your anxiety on Him, because He cares for you.

trust in Him,

Such trust rests on God’s character rather than changing circumstances. Like David, who depended on the Lord through danger, opposition, and uncertainty, believers are to rely on God’s care and righteous purpose.

Pro 3:5-6 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and lean not…
Isa 26:3-4 You will keep in perfect peace the steadfast of mind…
Jer 17:7 But blessed is the man who trusts in the LORD,…

and He will do it.

The Lord acts according to His will, bringing about what serves His purposes for those who entrust themselves to Him. His faithfulness is ultimately displayed in Christ, through whom God accomplished salvation.

1Th 5:24 The One who calls you is faithful, and He will do it.
Isa 55:11 So My word that proceeds from My mouth will not return to Me…
Php 1:6 being confident of this, that He who began a good work…

He will bring forth your righteousness like the dawn,

God will openly vindicate those who trust Him and walk uprightly. As dawn steadily breaks through the darkness, He will reveal the integrity of His people in His appointed time. What may be hidden, questioned, or misrepresented by others will not remain concealed before the Lord.

Isa 58:8 Then your light will break forth like the dawn…
Pro 4:18 The path of the righteous is like the first gleam…
Psa 112:4 Light dawns in the darkness for the upright…

your justice like the noonday sun.

God’s righteous judgment will become clear and undeniable, like the sun at its highest point. He sees every wrong and will establish justice with complete knowledge and authority. The promise looks beyond temporary circumstances to the day when Christ fully reveals His righteous rule.

Psa 62:5 Rest in God alone, O my soul, for my hope comes from Him.
Lam 3:25-26 The LORD is good to those who wait for Him,…

do not fret when men prosper in their ways,

The success of ungodly people is temporary and does not escape God’s notice.

Pro 24:19-20 Do not fret over evildoers, and do not be envious…
Pro 23:17 Do not let your heart envy sinners, but always continue…
Psa 73:3 For I envied the arrogant when I saw the prosperity…

when they carry out wicked schemes.

Their plans may seem effective for a time, but the Lord will judge evil and preserve those who trust Him.

Refrain from anger

David warns against the resentment stirred by the apparent success of evildoers. Anger can turn the righteous from trust in God toward sinful words or actions.

Pro 14:29 A patient man has great understanding, but…
Ecc 7:9 Do not be quickly provoked in your spirit,…
Pro 16:32 He who is slow to anger is better than a warrior,…

and abandon wrath;

Personal vengeance belonged to neither Israel’s judges nor private individuals apart from God’s lawful order. God sees injustice and will judge it in His time.

Col 3:8 But now you must put aside anger, rage, malice…
Jas 1:19-20 My beloved brothers, understand this: Be quick to listen…
Eph 4:31 Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger…

do not fret—

The prosperity and power of the wicked could trouble those who sought to live faithfully, but their present condition was temporary.

Pro 24:19-20 Do not fret over evildoers, and do not be envious…
Mat 6:34 Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will…
Php 4:6-7 Be anxious for nothing, but in everything, by prayer…

it can only bring harm.

Anxiety over evil easily becomes bitterness, envy, and wrongdoing, producing the very evil the righteous are called to avoid.

Pro 29:22 An angry man stirs up dissension, and a hot-tempered man…
Jas 1:20 man’s anger does not bring about the righteousness…
Pro 14:30 A tranquil heart is life to the body, but…

For the evildoers will be cut off,

God’s judgment will remove the wicked from the blessing and security He gives His people. In Israel’s history, being cut off could involve death, exile, loss of inheritance, or exclusion from the covenant community. Though evil may appear to flourish for a time, it will not endure before the righteous rule of God.

Pro 2:22 but the wicked will be cut off from the land,…
Psa 34:16 But the face of the LORD is against those who do evil,…
Psa 104:35 May sinners vanish from the earth and the wicked be no more.…

but those who hope in the LORD

Those who patiently trust God’s faithfulness and wait for His deliverance belong to Him. Their confidence rests not in present circumstances or human power, but in the Lord’s promises.

Psa 146:5 Blessed is he whose help is the God of Jacob,…
Psa 39:7 And now, O Lord, for what do I wait? My hope is in You.
Psa 33:22 May Your loving devotion rest on us, O LORD,…

will inherit the land.

The land promised to Abraham’s descendants represented God’s covenant blessing, provision, and rest. Israel would possess it under God’s rule, while the larger promise reaches toward the full inheritance of God’s people in His coming kingdom.

Deu 16:20 Pursue justice, and justice alone, so that you may live…
Psa 25:13 His soul will dwell in prosperity, and his descendants…
Mat 5:5 Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.

Yet a little while,

The apparent success of evil is brief when measured against God’s enduring rule. Though the wicked may prosper for a season, their time is limited and subject to His appointed judgment.

Heb 10:37 “In just a little while, He who is coming will come…”…
Hag 2:6 For this is what the LORD of Hosts says: “Once more…

and the wicked will be no more;

God will finally remove those who persist in rebellion against Him. Their power, influence, and security will not endure, while the righteous inheritance promised in the psalm remains.

Psa 104:35 May sinners vanish from the earth and the wicked be no more.…
Pro 10:25 When the whirlwind passes, the wicked are no more…

though you look for them,

Those who once seemed established and untouchable will pass from the scene. God’s people need not seek personal revenge or despair over present injustice.

Isa 41:12 You will seek them but will not find them.…
Job 20:8 He will fly away like a dream, never to be found;…

they will not be found.

The judgment will be complete. The wicked will lose their place, fulfilling God’s purpose to establish righteousness and peace under His rule.

Jer 50:20 In those days and at that time, declares the LORD…
Ezk 26:21 I will make you an object of horror, and you will be no more…

But the meek will inherit the land

David contrasts the humble who trust the Lord with the wicked who seize power for a time. The meek submit to God’s rule and wait for His justice rather than advancing themselves through violence or deceit. Their inheritance includes secure possession in the land God gave His people, a blessing the wicked cannot preserve.

Mat 5:5 Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.
Psa 25:13 His soul will dwell in prosperity, and his descendants…
Pro 2:21 For the upright will inhabit the land, and the blameless…

and delight in abundant prosperity.

God’s judgment brings peace, safety, and lasting well-being to those who remain faithful to Him. The prosperity described includes more than wealth; it is the settled peace of life under God’s favor, free from the oppression and instability caused by the wicked.

Deu 30:9 So the LORD your God will make you abound…
Jer 33:6 Nevertheless, I will bring to it health and healing…
Psa 128:2 For when you eat the fruit of your labor,…

The wicked scheme against the righteous

Those who reject God’s rule often resent the godly because righteous lives expose sin. Cain’s murder of Abel and Haman’s plot against the Jews show how envy, deceit, and hatred can drive such opposition. The conflict reflects the continuing struggle between those who follow God and those who resist Him.

Psa 94:20-21 Can a corrupt throne be Your ally—one devising mischief…
Psa 11:2 For behold, the wicked bend their bows.…
Mic 2:1 Woe to those who devise iniquity and plot evil on their beds…

and gnash their teeth at them,

Their anger is fierce and deliberate, like the rage of those who condemned Stephen. The image portrays hatred that seeks to destroy the righteous, yet God sees their plans and will judge the wicked in His time.

Psa 35:16 Like godless jesters at a feast, they gnashed their teeth…
Lam 2:16 All your enemies open their mouths against you.…
Act 7:54 On hearing this, the members of the Sanhedrin were enraged,…

but the Lord laughs,

The Lord regards the schemes of the wicked with contempt because no human power can overturn His rule or frustrate His purposes. Their violence and pride are real, but they remain under His authority.

Psa 2:4 The One enthroned in heaven laughs; the Lord taunts them.
Psa 59:8 But You, O LORD, laugh at them; You scoff at all…
Pro 1:26-27 in turn I will mock your calamity; I will sneer…

seeing that their day is coming.

God sees the judgment appointed for those who persist in evil. The wicked may prosper for a time, yet their downfall is certain, and the Lord will uphold the righteous.

Deu 32:35 Vengeance is Mine; I will repay. In due time…
Job 21:30 Indeed, the evil man is spared from the day of calamity,…
Pro 16:4 The LORD has made everything for His purpose—…

The wicked have drawn the sword

The wicked openly prepare to use violence against those who are vulnerable and unable to defend themselves.

Psa 55:21 His speech is smooth as butter, but war is in his heart.…
Psa 17:13-14 Arise, O LORD, confront them! Bring them to their knees;…

and bent the bow

Their attack is deliberate, whether through direct force or calculated schemes from a distance.

Psa 11:2 For behold, the wicked bend their bows.…
Jer 6:23 They grasp the bow and spear; they are cruel and merciless.…

to bring down the poor and needy,

They exploit the vulnerable, who often lack wealth, influence, and legal protection.

Amo 2:6-7 This is what the LORD says: “For three transgressions…
Isa 10:1-2 Woe to those who enact unjust statutes…

to slay those whose ways are upright.

Their hatred extends to those whose conduct exposes their rebellion against God.

1Jn 3:12 Do not be like Cain, who belonged to the evil one…
Psa 94:21 They band together against the righteous…

But their swords will pierce their own hearts,

The wicked intend violence against the righteous, yet God overturns their plans so that the harm they devise returns upon them. Their weapons of oppression become instruments of their own judgment, revealing the certainty of God’s justice.

1Sa 31:4 Then Saul said to his armor-bearer, “Draw your sword…
Psa 7:15-16 He has dug a hole and hollowed it out;…
Pro 26:27 He who digs a pit will fall into it and he who rolls a stone…

and their bows will be broken.

Their power to threaten, pursue, and destroy will fail. God removes the strength of those who resist His purposes, ending their ability to carry out evil against His people.

1Sa 2:4 The bows of the mighty are broken, but the feeble…
Psa 46:9 He makes wars to cease throughout the earth;…
Hos 1:5 And on that day I will break the bow of Israel…

Better is the little of the righteous

A modest life marked by obedience to God is of greater worth than riches gained apart from Him. Material need does not lessen the security or inheritance of those who belong to the Lord.

Pro 16:8 Better a little with righteousness than great gain…
Pro 15:16 Better a little with the fear of the LORD…
Pro 28:6 Better a poor man who walks with integrity…

than the abundance of many who are wicked.

The prosperity of the wicked may appear impressive, but it is temporary and cannot shield them from God’s judgment. Their wealth lacks the lasting blessing and peace granted to the righteous.

Pro 10:2 Ill-gotten treasures profit nothing, but righteousness…
Pro 13:22 A good man leaves an inheritance to his children’s children,…
Luk 12:15 And he said to them, “Watch out! Guard yourselves…

For the arms of the wicked will be broken,

God will bring the strength, influence, and oppressive power of the wicked to an end. Though evil may appear secure for a time, its power is temporary and cannot withstand God’s judgment. Throughout Israel’s history, the Lord humbled rulers and nations who exalted themselves against Him, proving that no human power can endure apart from His justice.

Psa 10:15 Break the arm of the wicked and evildoer; call him to account…
Job 38:15 Light is withheld from the wicked, and their upraised arm…
Ezk 30:22 Therefore this is what the Lord GOD says:…

but the LORD upholds the righteous.

The Lord preserves and sustains those who trust Him and walk in obedience to His ways. Their security does not rest in wealth, influence, or earthly strength, but in God’s faithful care. Even amid opposition and uncertainty, He supports His people and will not abandon them.

Psa 145:14 The LORD upholds all who fall and lifts up…
Isa 41:10 Do not fear, for I am with you; do not be afraid…
Psa 54:4 Surely God is my helper; the Lord is my sustainer…

The LORD knows the days of the blameless,

The LORD watches over those who walk before Him with sincere faith and integrity. Their lives, trials, and future are fully known to Him, and nothing can remove them from His care.

Psa 1:6 For the LORD guards the path of the righteous,…
Job 14:5 Since his days are determined and the number of his months…
Psa 139:16 Your eyes saw my unformed body; all my days were written…

and their inheritance will last forever.

Unlike the possessions and security of the wicked, the inheritance God gives His people endures. It includes His covenant blessings and finds its final fulfillment in the everlasting kingdom secured for believers through Christ.

1Pe 1:4 and into an inheritance that is imperishable,…
Heb 9:15 Therefore Christ is the mediator of a new covenant,…
Dan 7:18 But the saints of the Most High will receive the kingdom…

In the time of evil they will not be ashamed,

When wickedness prevails and judgment falls upon a land, the Lord preserves those who trust Him. His people may endure hardship and opposition, but they will not be abandoned or finally disgraced. Their hope rests in God’s righteous care and ultimate vindication.

Psa 31:17 O LORD, let me not be ashamed, for I have called on You.…
Psa 34:5 Those who look to Him are radiant with joy;…
Isa 49:23 Kings will be your foster fathers, and their queens…

and in the days of famine they will be satisfied.

In times of scarcity, God remains able to provide for His servants, as He did for Joseph’s family during Egypt’s famine and for Elijah in the drought under Ahab. The promise does not deny the reality of deprivation, but assures that the Lord knows the needs of the righteous and faithfully sustains them.

Psa 33:19 to deliver them from death and keep them alive in famine.
Job 5:20-22 In famine He will redeem you from death,…
1Ki 17:14-16 For this is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says:…

But the wicked and enemies of the LORD will perish

Those who set themselves against the LORD will not escape His judgment. Their apparent strength and success are temporary, while the righteous are preserved by God.

Psa 92:9 For surely Your enemies, O LORD, surely Your enemies…
Psa 1:6 For the LORD guards the path of the righteous,…
Mal 4:1 “For behold, the day is coming, burning like a furnace,”…

like the glory of the fields.

Fields may appear beautiful and full for a season, yet their splendor quickly passes. Human pride, wealth, and power share the same limited endurance when they stand apart from God.

Isa 40:6-8 A voice says, “Cry out!” And I asked, “What should I…
1Pe 1:24-25 All flesh is like grass, and all its glory…
Jas 1:10-11 because he will pass away like a flower of the field…

They will vanish; like smoke they will fade away.

The enemies of the LORD will disappear under His righteous judgment as smoke disperses in the wind. Their rebellion leaves no lasting inheritance, but the purposes of God endure.

Isa 51:6 But My salvation will last forever, and My righteousness……
Psa 68:2 As smoke is blown away, You will drive them out;…
Psa 102:3 For my days vanish like smoke, and my bones burn…

The wicked borrow and do not repay,

The wicked disregard both their obligations and the harm their dishonesty causes others. In Israel, debt carried a moral responsibility as well as a financial one; refusing repayment violated trust and revealed contempt for justice. Their conduct exposes a heart ruled by selfishness rather than fear of God.

Pro 22:7 The rich rule over the poor, and the borrower…
Rom 13:8 Be indebted to no one, except to one another in love.…
2Ki 4:7 She went and told the man of God, and he said, “Go, sell…

but the righteous are gracious and giving.

The righteous reflect God’s compassion by using what they possess to help those in need. Their generosity is not careless but flows from integrity, gratitude, and confidence in the Lord’s provision. Unlike the wicked, they seek the good of others rather than personal gain.

Pro 21:26 All day long he covets more, but the righteous give…
Luk 6:38 Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure,…
2Co 9:7 Each one should give what he has decided…

Surely those He blesses will inherit the land,

God’s blessing rests on those who trust and obey Him, granting them a secure place in the inheritance He has promised. For Israel, the land of Canaan was a real covenant gift, given through Abraham’s descendants and established under God’s rule. It also foreshadows the lasting inheritance of all who belong to Christ.

Mat 5:5 Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.
Isa 57:13 When you cry out, let your companies of idols…
Psa 25:13 His soul will dwell in prosperity, and his descendants…

but the cursed will be destroyed.

Those who persist in rebellion against God will not endure. Though the wicked may appear secure for a time, their judgment is certain, and they will be removed from the place God gives to the righteous.

Deu 28:20 The LORD will send curses upon you, confusion and reproof…
Pro 14:11 The house of the wicked will be destroyed,…
Pro 2:22 but the wicked will be cut off from the land,…

The steps of a man are ordered by the LORD

God directs the course of the righteous, governing both major events and daily circumstances according to His purpose. David wrote from Israel’s experience of God’s faithful care, assuring believers that their lives are not ruled by chance or by the apparent success of the wicked.

Pro 16:9 A man’s heart plans his course, but the LORD determines…
Pro 20:24 A man’s steps are from the LORD, so how can…
Jer 10:23 I know, O LORD, that a man’s way is not his own;…

who takes delight in his journey.

The Lord takes pleasure in the path of those who trust and obey Him. Their way may include hardship and correction, yet God remains personally involved, sustaining them and bringing their lives into accord with His will.

Pro 11:20 The perverse in heart are an abomination to the LORD,…
Psa 18:19 He brought me out into the open; He rescued me…
Psa 147:11 The LORD is pleased with those who fear Him, …

Though he falls,

The righteous may stumble through weakness, hardship, or opposition, yet God does not abandon those who trust Him.

Pro 24:16 For though a righteous man may fall seven times,…
Psa 145:14 The LORD upholds all who fall and lifts up…
Mic 7:8 Do not gloat over me, my enemy! Though I have fallen…

he will not be overwhelmed,

His failures and afflictions will not bring final ruin, because the Lord preserves and restores His people.

Psa 94:18 “My foot is slipping,” Your loving devotion, O LORD,…
2Co 4:8-9 We are hard pressed on all sides, but not crushed;…
Psa 118:13 I was pushed so hard I was falling, but the LORD helped me.

for the LORD is holding his hand.

God’s personal care steadies, guides, and sustains the believer through every trial.

Isa 41:13 For I am the LORD your God, who takes hold of your hand…
Psa 73:23 Yet I am always with You; You hold my right hand.
Isa 42:6 I, the LORD, have called you for a righteous purpose,…

I once was young and now am old,

David speaks as a man whose long life had allowed him to observe God’s dealings with His people through changing circumstances. His experience gives weight to the instruction of Psalm 37, which contrasts the temporary success of the wicked with the lasting security of those who trust the Lord.

Pro 20:29 The glory of young men is their strength, and gray hair…
Psa 71:17-18 O God, You have taught me from my youth,…
1Sa 12:2 Now here is the king walking before you…

yet never have I seen the righteous abandoned

David does not deny that faithful people suffer hardship, persecution, or loss. Rather, he affirms that God does not forsake those who belong to Him. The Lord remains present with the righteous and sustains them according to His faithfulness.

Psa 94:14 For the LORD will not forsake His people;…
Heb 13:5 Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content…
Deu 31:6 Be strong and courageous; do not be afraid or terrified…

or their children begging for bread.

God’s care commonly extends to the households of those who fear Him. In Israel’s covenant community, families were supported through labor, kinship, generosity, and God’s provision. David’s testimony emphasizes that the righteous are not left without the Lord’s care, even across generations.

Pro 10:3 The LORD does not let the righteous go hungry,…
Psa 111:5 He provides food for those who fear Him;…
Pro 13:22 A good man leaves an inheritance to his children’s children,…

They are ever generous

The righteous person’s life is marked by a steady concern for others, especially those in need. Generosity reflects trust that God provides and frees His people from living with a grasping, fearful spirit.

Deu 15:7-8 If there is a poor man among your brothers…
Pro 11:25 A generous soul will prosper, and he who refreshes others…
Pro 19:17 Kindness to the poor is a loan to the LORD,…

and quick to lend,

In Israel, loans often helped families through poverty, crop failure, or debt. A godly person did not exploit hardship but readily offered practical help, extending resources without cruelty or selfish gain.

Exo 22:25 If you lend money to one of My people among you…
Deu 23:19-20 Do not charge your brother interest on money…
Luk 6:34-35 And if you lend to those from whom you expect repayment…

and their children are a blessing.

The faithful example of the righteous affects the household that follows. Their children benefit from a legacy of godliness, stability, and favor, becoming part of the continuing witness of God’s faithfulness from one generation to another.

Pro 20:7 The righteous man walks with integrity;…
Psa 127:3 Children are indeed a heritage from the LORD…
Deu 7:13 He will love you and bless you and multiply you.…

Turn away from evil

Repentance requires a deliberate rejection of sin and conduct that opposes God’s will. It involves more than outward change; it calls for the heart and mind to be redirected toward obedience.

Pro 3:7 Be not wise in your own eyes; fear the LORD…
Job 28:28 And He said to man, ‘Behold, the fear of the Lord…
Rom 12:9 Love must be sincere. Detest what is evil;…

and do good,

Righteous living is active, expressed through justice, mercy, faithfulness, and love for others. Those who fear the Lord are not merely to avoid wrongdoing but to pursue what honors Him and benefits their neighbors.

Psa 34:14 Turn away from evil and do good; seek peace and pursue it.
1Pe 3:11 He must turn from evil and do good; he must seek peace…
Isa 1:17 Learn to do right; seek justice and correct the oppressor.…

so that you will abide forever.

God’s faithful people are assured of His preserving care. For Israel, obedience brought security under God’s covenant; ultimately, the promise reaches beyond earthly life to enduring fellowship with Him.

1Jn 2:17 The world is passing away, along with its desires;…
Jhn 8:35 A slave does not remain in the house forever…
Psa 23:6 Surely goodness and mercy will follow me…

For the LORD loves justice

God’s judgments are always right, and He upholds what is true, fair, and righteous among His people. Justice in Israel’s life included faithful worship, honest dealings, protection for the vulnerable, and punishment of evil.

Isa 61:8 For I, the LORD, love justice; I hate robbery…
Psa 99:4 The mighty King loves justice. You have established equity;…
Psa 33:5 The LORD loves righteousness and justice;…

and will not forsake His saints.

Those who belong to the Lord are not abandoned, even in seasons of trouble or oppression. His saints, meaning faithful or godly people set apart for God, are preserved. Israel’s history repeatedly showed God’s covenant faithfulness despite the failures of individuals and the nation.

Psa 94:14 For the LORD will not forsake His people;…
1Sa 12:22 Indeed, for the sake of His great name…
Deu 31:6 Be strong and courageous; do not be afraid or terrified…

They are preserved forever,

God keeps His people securely under His care. Their ultimate future rests not on changing circumstances but on His enduring faithfulness.

Psa 121:7-8 The LORD will guard you from all evil; He will preserve…
Psa 97:10 Hate evil, O you who love the LORD! He delivers them…
Pro 2:8 to guard the paths of justice and protect the way…

but the offspring of the wicked will be cut off.

Wickedness does not have a lasting future. Those who persist in rebellion against God, along with the influence and legacy of their evil, will face His judgment.

Psa 21:10 You will wipe their descendants from the earth,…
Isa 14:22 “I will rise up against them,” declares the LORD of Hosts.…
Psa 109:13 May his descendants be cut off; may their name be blotted…

The righteous will inherit the land

God’s people are assured of a lasting inheritance, in contrast to the wicked who are removed. The land represents the settled blessing God gives to those who remain faithful to Him.

Mat 5:5 Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.
Psa 25:13 His soul will dwell in prosperity, and his descendants…
Isa 57:13 When you cry out, let your companies of idols…

and dwell in it forever.

Their security will not be temporary or threatened by evil. God’s promise reaches beyond present circumstances to the enduring peace and life of His coming kingdom.

Isa 60:21 Then all your people will be righteous;…
Ezk 37:25 They will live in the land that I gave to My servant Jacob,…
Dan 7:18 But the saints of the Most High will receive the kingdom…

The mouth of the righteous man utters wisdom,

Righteous speech flows from a life ordered by the fear of the Lord. Biblical wisdom is not merely knowledge but the ability to live according to God’s truth in daily decisions, relationships, and conduct. What comes from the mouth reveals the condition of the heart.

Pro 10:31 The mouth of the righteous brings forth wisdom,…
Pro 31:26 She opens her mouth with wisdom, and faithful instruction…
Pro 15:7 The lips of the wise spread knowledge…

and his tongue speaks justice.

The righteous man speaks truthfully and upholds what is right according to God’s standards. In Israel, justice involved fair treatment, honest judgment, and protection for those vulnerable to oppression. Such speech reflects the character of Christ, whose rule is marked by perfect righteousness and justice.

Pro 8:6 Listen, for I speak of noble things…
Pro 16:13 Righteous lips are a king’s delight…
Isa 33:15 He who walks righteously and speaks with sincerity,…

The law of his God is in his heart;

The righteous man has received God’s instruction as the governing principle of his mind, will, and conduct. His obedience is not merely outward or occasional; it arises from inward devotion to the Lord. God’s law directs his choices and shapes his character, anticipating the covenant promise that God would write His law on the hearts of His people.

Psa 40:8 I delight to do Your will, O my God; …
Jer 31:33 “But this is the covenant I will make”…
Deu 6:6 These words I am commanding you today are to be…

his steps do not falter.

Guided by God’s instruction, he is kept from the instability and ruin that mark the way of the wicked. This does not promise freedom from hardship, but firm direction and preservation as he walks faithfully before the Lord.

Psa 17:5 My steps have held to Your paths; my feet have not slipped.
Psa 18:36 You broaden the path beneath me so that…
Pro 3:23 Then you will go on your way in safety,…

Though the wicked lie in wait for the righteous,

The godly often face deliberate opposition from those who reject God’s rule. David knew this danger firsthand through Saul’s pursuit and the conspiracies that arose during his reign. The righteous become targets because their lives and allegiance to God expose evil.

Psa 11:2 For behold, the wicked bend their bows.…
Psa 59:3 See how they lie in wait for me. Fierce men conspire…
Psa 140:4-5 Guard me, O LORD, from the hands of the wicked.…

and seek to slay them,

The wicked do not merely resist the righteous but may seek their ruin. Israel’s history includes prophets and faithful servants threatened by corrupt rulers and hostile nations. Yet God sees their plans, preserves His people according to His purpose, and will finally judge those who pursue violence.

1Sa 19:2 My father Saul intends to kill you. Be on guard…
Luk 22:2 and the chief priests and scribes were looking for a way…
Act 23:12-13 When daylight came, the Jews formed a conspiracy…

the LORD will not leave them in their power

The wicked may oppress the righteous for a time, but their control is limited by God’s rule. He preserves His people and does not abandon them to those who seek their harm.

Psa 41:2 The LORD will protect and preserve him; He will bless him…
Psa 97:10 Hate evil, O you who love the LORD! He delivers them…
Jer 15:21 I will deliver you from the hand of the wicked……

or let them be condemned under judgment.

Courts and rulers may render unjust decisions, yet God sees every false accusation and judges with perfect righteousness. He will vindicate the righteous and bring the wicked to account.

Rom 8:33-34 Who will bring any charge against God’s elect?…
Jhn 3:18 Whoever believes in Him is not condemned,…
Psa 143:2 Do not bring Your servant into judgment,…

Wait for the LORD and keep His way,

God’s people are called to trust His timing while remaining obedient to His commands. The righteous do not pursue justice by adopting the ways of the wicked but continue faithfully in the path God has established.

Psa 27:14 Wait patiently for the LORD; be strong and courageous.…
Deu 8:6 Therefore you shall keep the commandments of the LORD…
Deu 5:33 You must walk in all the ways that the LORD your God…

and He will raise you up to inherit the land.

The promise recalls God’s covenant gift of the land to Abraham and his descendants. Though the faithful may be humbled or oppressed for a time, God will establish them and fulfill His purposes for them.

1Sa 2:8 He raises the poor from the dust and lifts the needy…
Psa 25:13 His soul will dwell in prosperity, and his descendants…
Mat 5:5 Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.

When the wicked are cut off, you will see it.

God’s judgment on the wicked will be open and undeniable. The righteous will witness the downfall of those who reject His rule, confirming that evil does not endure and that the Lord judges with justice.

Psa 91:8 You will only see it with your eyes, and witness…
Pro 29:16 When the wicked thrive, rebellion increases;…
Psa 58:10 The righteous will rejoice when they see they are avenged;…

I have seen a wicked, ruthless man

The psalmist had witnessed men who openly defied God yet exercised power, wealth, and influence without restraint. Their success could appear to contradict God’s justice, especially when their actions harmed others.

Psa 73:3 For I envied the arrogant when I saw the prosperity…
Jer 12:1 Righteous are You, O LORD, when I plead before You.…
Mal 3:15 So now we call the arrogant blessed. Not only…

flourishing like a well-rooted native tree,

His prosperity seemed secure and permanent, like a tree firmly established in its own soil. Yet the surrounding context shows that this appearance was temporary; God would ultimately remove the wicked, while those who trust Him would endure.

Job 8:16-19 He is a well-watered plant in the sunshine,…
Job 5:3-4 I have seen a fool taking root, but suddenly his house…
Ezk 31:3-9 Look at Assyria, a cedar in Lebanon, with beautiful…

yet he passed away and was no more;

The wicked may appear secure and powerful for a season, but their success is temporary. God brings down those who exalt themselves against Him, as history repeatedly shows in the fall of proud rulers and kingdoms. Their apparent permanence gives way to judgment and disappearance.

Pro 10:25 When the whirlwind passes, the wicked are no more…
Pro 12:7 The wicked are overthrown and perish, but the house…
Oba 1:16 For as you drank on My holy mountain, so all the nations…

though I searched, he could not be found.

The removal is complete: the wicked leave no lasting place, inheritance, or influence. While evil may seem established in the present, God’s justice will finally separate the righteous from the wicked and end all rebellion against His rule.

Job 20:8 He will fly away like a dream, never to be found;…
Job 20:9 The eye that saw him will see him no more,…
Job 7:10 He never returns to his house; his place…

Consider the blameless

The psalmist directs attention to those whose lives are marked by integrity before God. Though not sinless, they pursue faithful obedience rather than rebellion, contrasting with the evildoers who may prosper for a time.

Job 1:1 There was a man in the land of Uz whose name was Job…
Gen 17:1 When Abram was ninety-nine years old, the LORD appeared…
Deu 18:13 You must be blameless before the LORD your God.

and observe the upright,

Their honest and just conduct reveals the stability of a life ordered by God’s commands. They remain steadfast when others gain advantage through wickedness.

Pro 11:3 The integrity of the upright guides them,…
Pro 14:2 He who walks in uprightness fears the LORD,…
Psa 25:21 May integrity and uprightness preserve me,…

for posterity awaits the man of peace.

The one at peace with God and committed to peace with others has a secure future. The wicked ultimately perish, but the righteous receive God’s preserving care and enduring inheritance.

Pro 20:7 The righteous man walks with integrity;…
Psa 112:2 His descendants will be mighty in the land;…
Mat 5:9 Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be…

But the transgressors will all be destroyed;

Those who persist in rebellion against God face certain judgment. Their apparent success is temporary, and their opposition to His righteous rule ends in destruction.

Psa 145:20 The LORD preserves all who love Him, but…
2Th 1:9 They will suffer the penalty of eternal destruction,…

the future of the wicked will be cut off.

The wicked will not secure an enduring legacy, prosperity, or place in God’s kingdom. Their hopes end under God’s judgment, while the righteous inherit the lasting blessings He has promised.

Pro 24:20 For the evil man has no future; the lamp of the wicked…
Pro 2:22 but the wicked will be cut off from the land,…

The salvation of the righteous is from the LORD;

The righteous are those who trust the Lord and walk in obedience to Him. Their deliverance does not rest on human strength, wealth, or political security, but on God’s sovereign power and faithful care. Though the Old Testament often includes rescue from immediate danger, God’s salvation ultimately reaches beyond temporal circumstances to His full deliverance of His people.

Jon 2:9 But I, with the voice of thanksgiving, will sacrifice…
Psa 3:8 Salvation belongs to the LORD; may Your blessing…
Psa 62:1 For the choirmaster. According to Jeduthun.…

He is their stronghold in time of trouble.

God provides secure protection when hardship, opposition, and danger arise. Israel’s history repeatedly showed the uncertainty of earthly defenses, while the Lord remained a reliable refuge for those who depended on Him. Trouble is not absent from the righteous person’s life, but God’s presence and strength sustain them through it.

Psa 9:9 The LORD is a refuge for the oppressed, a stronghold…
Nam 1:7 The LORD is good, a stronghold in the day of distress;…
Pro 18:10 The name of the LORD is a strong tower;…

The LORD helps and delivers them;

God actively sustains the righteous and brings them through danger. David knew this personally as the Lord preserved him through years of pursuit by Saul and conflict with surrounding enemies.

Psa 46:1 For the choirmaster. Of the sons of Korah.…
Psa 34:17 The righteous cry out, and the LORD hears;…
Psa 54:4 Surely God is my helper; the Lord is my sustainer…

He rescues and saves them from the wicked,

The wicked oppose God’s purposes and often afflict those who seek to obey Him. The Lord is able to deliver His people from violent enemies, unjust rulers, and every form of evil.

Psa 97:10 Hate evil, O you who love the LORD! He delivers them…
Psa 18:17 He rescued me from my powerful enemy, from foes too mighty…
2Ti 4:18 And the Lord will rescue me from every evil action…

because they take refuge in Him.

Their safety rests in trusting the Lord rather than relying on human strength or circumstances. He is their secure refuge and faithful protector.

Nam 1:7 The LORD is good, a stronghold in the day of distress;…
Psa 2:12 Kiss the Son, lest He be angry and you perish…
Pro 18:10 The name of the LORD is a strong tower;…
