Judges 18

The Danites Settle in Laish

In those days there was no king in Israel,

Israel lacked centralized national leadership, and the tribes often acted independently. The book repeatedly portrays this era as one of disorder, idolatry, and moral compromise, when many Israelites followed their own desires rather than God’s commands.

Jdg 17:6 In those days there was no king in Israel;…
Jdg 21:25 In those days there was no king in Israel;…
Jdg 19:1 Now in those days, when there was no king in Israel,…

and the tribe of the Danites was looking for territory to occupy.

Although Dan had received an allotted inheritance, the tribe had not secured it against its enemies. Pressed by the Amorites and unwilling to complete the conquest of its assigned territory, the Danites sought an easier place to settle. Their search would lead them north to Laish, a city they would seize and rename Dan.

Jos 19:47-48 Later, when the territory of the Danites was lost…
Jdg 1:34-35 The Amorites forced the Danites into the hill country…
Jos 19:40-46 The seventh lot came out for the clans of the tribe of Dan:…

For up to that time they had not come into an inheritance among the tribes of Israel.

Dan’s inheritance had been assigned, but it had not been fully possessed. Their situation reflected the wider failure of Israel’s tribes to drive out the inhabitants of the land as God had commanded.

Jos 13:1-7 Now Joshua was old and well along in years,…
Num 26:52-56 Then the LORD said to Moses,…

So the Danites sent out five men from their clans,

Unable to secure their original inheritance in the coastal region, the Danites sought a place where they could settle without facing the resistance that had confined them.

These were capable men from Danite towns near Philistine territory, chosen to assess both the land and its inhabitants.

They were to find a suitable territory for the tribe and determine whether it could be taken and defended.

Deu 1:24-25 They left and went up into the hill country,…

The tribe acted on the scouts’ report, looking for a new inheritance rather than remaining in their restricted territory.

Their search led them north through the central highlands of Israel.

and came to the house of Micah,

Micah had established a private shrine containing idols and had appointed a Levite to serve as his priest, reflecting the disorder in Israel’s worship during the period of the judges.

Jdg 17:5 Now this man Micah had a shrine, and he made an ephod…

they recognized the voice of the young Levite;

The Danite scouts knew the Levite by his voice, revealing that he was not unknown among the Israelites despite his service in Micah’s private shrine.

Act 8:30-31 So Philip ran up and heard the man reading Isaiah…
Jhn 1:38-39 Jesus turned and saw them following. “What do you want?”…

“Who brought you here?

They questioned how he had come to Micah’s household and under whose authority he served.

Jdg 17:9 Where are you from? Micah asked him. I am a Levite……
Jdg 17:10 “Stay with me,” Micah said to him, “and be my father…”…

What are you doing in this place?

His presence as priest over Micah’s images and shrine departed from the worship God had established for Israel.

Jdg 17:12 Micah ordained the Levite, and the young man became…
Deu 12:5-7 Instead, you must seek the place the LORD your God…

Why are you here?”

The questions expose the Levite’s unsettled position and prepare for the Danites’ later effort to take both him and Micah’s religious objects for themselves.

1Ki 19:9 There Elijah entered a cave and spent the night.…
1Ki 19:13 When Elijah heard it, he wrapped his face in his cloak…

“Micah has done this and that for me,”

Micah, an Ephraimite, had established a private shrine furnished with an ephod and household idols. His religious practices combined elements associated with Israel’s worship with idolatry, reflecting the spiritual disorder common during the period of the Judges.

2Sa 9:7 “Do not be afraid,” said David, “for surely”…
Rut 2:13 “My lord,” she said, “may I continue to find favor”…

he replied,

The Levite had been traveling in search of a place to live and had accepted Micah’s offer of support. His answer reveals that his service was based on personal arrangement rather than obedience to the Lord’s appointed order for priestly ministry.

1Sa 1:15 “No, my lord,” Hannah replied. “I am a woman troubled…
Gen 47:3 “What is your occupation?” Pharaoh asked…
2Ki 8:13 “But how could your servant, a mere dog”…

“and he has hired me to be his priest.”

Rather than serving at the place God had designated, the Levite acted as priest in Micah’s household shrine for wages and provision. The arrangement exposed both Micah’s unauthorized worship and the Levite’s willingness to use his sacred office for personal advantage.

Then they said to him,

The five Danite scouts spoke to the Levite living in Micah’s house. Dan had struggled to possess the territory allotted to the tribe, and these men had been sent north to search for a place where the Danites could settle.

2Ki 8:8 So the king said to Hazael, “Take a gift in your hand…
2Ki 3:11 But Jehoshaphat asked, “Is there no prophet of the LORD…
1Ki 22:7 But Jehoshaphat asked, “Is there not still a prophet…

“Please inquire of God

They asked the Levite to seek God’s direction for them. Although he served at Micah’s unauthorized shrine, the scouts treated him as a priest whose counsel could reveal God’s will.

1Ki 22:5 But Jehoshaphat also said to the king of Israel,…
1Sa 23:2 So David inquired of the LORD, “Should I go and…

to determine whether we will have a successful journey.”

Their question concerned the outcome of their reconnaissance mission. They wanted assurance that their search for a new homeland would prosper, even as they sought guidance through a religious arrangement that departed from God’s appointed worship.

And the priest told them,

Micah’s Levite priest gave the Danite scouts religious counsel despite serving at a private shrine marked by idolatry. His presence shows how Israel’s worship had become detached from the Lord’s appointed order during the days when there was no king in Israel.

Num 6:24-26 ‘May the LORD bless you and keep you;…
Lev 9:22 Aaron lifted up his hands toward the people and blessed…
2Ch 30:27 Then the priests and the Levites stood to bless the people,…

“Go in peace.

The priest dismissed them with a blessing, assuring them that their mission could proceed without fear.

2Ki 5:19 “Go in peace,” said Elisha. But after Naaman had traveled…
Luk 7:50 And Jesus told the woman, “Your faith has saved you”…

The LORD is watching over your journey.”

He claimed the Lord’s favor over their search for land, yet the Danites were acting within a corrupt religious setting and would soon establish an idolatrous center at Laish. His assurance reflected the spiritual confusion of the period rather than faithful guidance according to God’s law.

Gen 28:15 Look, I am with you, and I will watch over you wherever you go…

So the five men departed and came to Laish,

The Danite scouts were searching for land because the tribe had not secured its full inheritance in its original territory. Laish lay in the far north, beyond the areas controlled by the other tribes.

Laish was fertile, secure, and isolated from its allies in Sidon. Its peaceful inhabitants had little reason to expect an attack, making the city an attractive target for the Danites.

Num 14:7 and said to the whole congregation of Israel,…
Deu 8:7 For the LORD your God is bringing you into a good land,…

The scouts pressed the tribe to move quickly rather than lose the opportunity. Their confidence rested on the weakness of Laish and the desirability of its land.

2Ki 7:4 If we say, ‘Let us go into the city,’ we will die…

The Danites acted on the report, eventually capturing Laish, destroying the city, and rebuilding it as Dan. Their migration became part of Israel’s continuing failure to complete the settlement of the land according to God’s order.

So six hundred Danites

Six hundred armed Danites set out from a tribe still struggling to possess its assigned inheritance. Pressured by surrounding peoples into the western foothills, they sought a new settlement elsewhere.

Zorah and Eshtaol were Danite towns near the border between Judah and Philistine territory, where the tribe had long faced pressure from its enemies. From these towns, six hundred armed Danites departed to seek a new homeland.

Num 31:5 So a thousand men were recruited from each tribe…
Jos 1:14 Your wives, your young children, and your livestock…

They went up and camped at Kiriath-jearim in Judah.

The Danite migration force paused at Kiriath-jearim, meaning “City of Forests,” a city in Judah near the border with Benjamin. Their camp marked another stage in their search for territory, since the tribe had not secured the inheritance originally assigned to it in the coastal plain.

Jos 18:14 On the west side the border curved southward…
Jos 15:9 From the hilltop the border curved to the spring…
1Sa 7:1-2 Then the men of Kiriath-jearim came for the ark of the LORD…

That is why the place west of Kiriath-jearim is called Mahaneh-dan to this day.

The site became known as Mahaneh-dan, “Camp of Dan,” preserving the memory of the tribe’s journey northward. Its continued name showed that the Danites’ departure and temporary encampment remained a recognized part of Israel’s history.

Jos 19:41 The territory of their inheritance included Zorah, Eshtaol,…
Jos 19:47 Later, when the territory of the Danites was lost…

And from there they traveled to the hill country of Ephraim

Leaving the region near Kiriath-jearim, the Danites entered the rugged central highlands occupied by Ephraim. Their journey brought them back to the area where the five scouts had previously encountered Micah’s household shrine.

Micah had established an unlawful private place of worship containing images and sacred objects, with a Levite serving as his priest. The Danites’ return to his house leads directly to their seizure of these objects and the Levite, revealing the widespread religious disorder in Israel during the days of the judges.

The Danites Take Micah’s Idols

Then the five men who had gone to spy out the land of Laish

The Danite scouts had found Laish, a prosperous but isolated city whose inhabitants lived without nearby allies. Dan’s original territory had remained difficult to secure, and the tribe was searching for a place where it could settle without strong resistance.

Jos 2:1 Then Joshua son of Nun secretly sent two spies…

said to their brothers,

They reported their discovery to the six hundred armed Danites traveling with their families and possessions. Their shared tribal identity shaped the decision that followed.

Gen 19:7 “Please, my brothers,” he pleaded, “don’t do such a wicked…”…
Gen 29:4 “My brothers,” Jacob asked the shepherds…
1Sa 30:23 But David said, “My brothers, you must not do this.…

“Did you know that one of these houses has an ephod, household gods, a graven image, and a molten idol?

The men recognized that Micah’s house contained a private shrine with objects associated with worship and seeking guidance. Though these items were presented in the name of Israel’s God, their use violated His commands and revealed the widespread corruption of worship in Israel.

Jdg 17:5 Now this man Micah had a shrine, and he made an ephod…
Gen 31:19 Now while Laban was out shearing his sheep,…
Deu 27:15 Cursed is the man who makes a carved idol or molten image—…

Now think about what you should do.”

The scouts urged the Danites to take advantage of what they had found. Rather than rejecting Micah’s false worship, they saw his shrine and priest as resources that could serve their own plans.

Pro 15:22 Plans fail for lack of counsel.…
Pro 14:8 The wisdom of the prudent is to discern his way…
Pro 16:3 Commit your works to the LORD and your plans…

So they turned aside there

The Danite spies intentionally left their route to visit a place connected with worship, though it was corrupt worship. Dan was still seeking land because the tribe had not secured its allotted inheritance.

Jdg 19:11 When they were near Jebus and the day was almost gone…
Gen 19:2 and said, “My lords, please turn aside…”…

and went to the home of the young Levite,

The Levite was living in Micah’s household rather than serving according to the duties assigned to his tribe. His willingness to act as priest for a private shrine reveals the religious disorder prevailing in Israel.

The spies recognized the Levite and spoke with him, beginning an encounter that would lead them to seek his counsel and later take him with them. Their interest in him was not rooted in obedience to God’s appointed worship but in using religion to support their own plans.

The Danites had sent these men to seek territory because their original inheritance remained difficult to occupy. Having found Laish, they now returned with the larger force of their tribe.

The metal image was another part of the shrine Micah had established. The Danites did not reject these idols as sinful; they took them to serve their own tribal purposes.

2Ki 17:16 They abandoned all the commandments of the LORD their God…

the priest said to them, “What are you doing?”

Micah’s Levite priest confronted them because they were taking the objects entrusted to his care. His protest soon gave way when the Danites offered him a larger position among their tribe.

Gen 31:30 Now you have gone off because you long for your father’s…
Exo 32:21 “What did this people do to you,” Moses asked Aaron, …

“Be quiet,” they told him.

The Danites silence the Levite with blunt authority as they take Micah’s religious objects. Though he serves as a priest, they treat him as an obstacle rather than a representative of God.

Zep 1:7 Be silent in the presence of the Lord GOD.…

They command him to stop protesting and join them. Their offer is not a proper call to priestly service but an attempt to secure religious support for their own plans.

Job 40:4 Behold, I am insignificant. How can I reply to You?…
Num 10:29 Then Moses said to Hobab, the son of Moses’ father-in-law…

and be a father and a priest to us.

They promise him an honored role as spiritual adviser and priest for their tribe. Yet the Danites are establishing worship around stolen idols rather than seeking the Lord according to His commands.

The Danites appeal to his ambition by offering greater status and influence. He accepts their proposal, showing that his service was driven by personal advantage rather than faithfulness to the Lord.

So the priest was glad

The Levite welcomed the Danites’ offer because it promised greater status and support than serving one household in Ephraim. He abandoned Micah without hesitation, revealing the instability of a priesthood detached from the Lord’s appointed worship.

After the Danites had gone some distance from Micah’s house, they likely believed they had put enough distance between themselves and Micah to continue north without challenge. Micah’s party caught the Danites before they reached their destination. The encounter exposed the spiritual disorder of the period: Micah defended idols he had made, while the Danites relied on stolen objects and a compromised priest as they sought an inheritance.

Micah had gathered men to recover his property, but the Danites’ armed force made resistance dangerous. The encounter reflects the disorder in Israel during the days when tribal groups acted according to their own interests.

The Danites said to him,

The Danites, still seeking a secure inheritance, had taken Micah’s idols and priest as they traveled north to seize Laish. Their conduct reveals the disorder in Israel, where tribes acted according to their own desires rather than God’s law.

So the Danites went on their way,

The Danites continued north in search of land they could occupy, having failed to secure their original inheritance along the coastal plain. Their migration would lead to the capture of Laish and the establishment of the city later called Dan.

Jos 19:47 Later, when the territory of the Danites was lost…
Jdg 1:34 The Amorites forced the Danites into the hill country…

and Micah turned to go back home,

Micah had gathered his household and neighbors to recover the carved image, the ephod, and the Levite priest taken by the Danites. His private shrine, built apart from the worship God commanded, proved unable to protect either its objects or its priest.

Outnumbered and unable to challenge the armed Danites, Micah abandoned the pursuit. The event displays the disorder of Israel in the days of the judges, when tribes and households acted according to their own desires rather than under faithful obedience to the Lord.

After they had taken Micah’s idols and his priest,

they went to Laish,

They went to Laish, a prosperous but isolated city in the far north. Because the Danites had failed to secure their assigned territory in the central hill country, they sought a place where they could settle without resistance from stronger neighbors.

and Jonathan son of Gershom, the son of Moses,

“Jonathan son of Gershom, the son of Moses” identifies the Levite who served in the Danites’ corrupt shrine system. His descent from Moses heightens the tragedy: the household of Israel’s great lawgiver became associated with the very idolatry the Law condemned.

Although the priesthood was reserved for Aaron’s descendants, Dan established its own shrine and priestly line apart from the tabernacle. This illustrates the religious disorder of the period of the judges.

So they set up for themselves Micah’s graven image,

The Danites installed the stolen idol in their new city as part of an unauthorized system of worship. Though Israel had been commanded to worship the Lord according to His appointed order, Dan adopted Micah’s image and priesthood, revealing the widespread spiritual disorder of the period.

The tabernacle remained at Shiloh as Israel’s appointed place of worship. The contrast between Shiloh and Dan exposes Israel’s divided condition: the Lord’s sanctuary was available to the nation, yet Dan chose an idol and a self-made form of worship.
